The record-breaking number of years it now takes to save for a home

0

Buying into the great Australian dream of owning your own home is further out of reach as a new report shows property has never been more unaffordable.

The amount of time needed to save for a deposit has reached record levels according to the Cotality Housing Affordability Report.

Twelve years is the period that hopeful home owners now need to have for putting away enough money for a 20 per cent deposit nationally.

Paying off the mortgage has also reached record highs across the country.

“Despite recent rate dips, the cost of servicing a new loan is stubbornly high, requiring 45 per cent of median household income,” said Cotality head of research Eliza Owen.

The only area where costs have not reached their highest level is how much it costs to service a mortgage.

“This year the portion of income to service a mortgage is not at record highs because of rate cuts this year.”

However she said households were still having to put aside hefty amounts to pay off their mortgage.

“It’s still a ridiculous amount at 45 per cent of national median household income,” Ms Owen said.

How long to get together a deposit

Those trying to get on the property ladder face their first hurdle when it comes to getting a deposit together.

While nationally it is taking 12 years to put together a 20 per cent mortgage, those buying in some capital cities can expect to be saving for even longer.

In Sydney it takes 16.7 years to save for a house deposit, while saving for a 20 per cent deposit for a unit is something that takes 9.5 years.

In Melbourne it is 11.2 per cent to save for a 20 per cent deposit for a house, and 7.4 years for a unit.

Pockets of affordability

Along with Hobart and Canberra, Melbourne was now seen as one of the most affordable cities to buy in Australia.

“We’ve seen a few examples of improved affordability, or even just steady affordability,” she said.

Ms Owen said Melbourne had improved on the affordability scale since 2021.

Key challenges such as increasing housing supply are being addressed. Pic:Shutterstock

“It’s improved because of some unintentional factors like a lot of people leaving Melbourne through the pandemic creating less demand.

“There was also a bit of an overhang from the 2010s apartment boom.

“Then there has been more intentional factors, like reducing the minimum land value for land tax payments, which has captured a lot more of essentially investment property owners.

“It seems that has cooled the market.”

Regions also feel the pain

Those living in regional Australia have also seen affordability drop.

“The extraordinary growth in house prices in regional Australia has led to a greater deterioration in affordability.

“It is pretty much putting the regions on par with the capitals when it comes to affordability,” Ms Owen said.

In regional NSW it now takes 12.4 years to save for a deposit for a house and in regional Victoria 10 years.

How do we make property more affordable

“The good news is that we know there are things that can change the situation,” Ms Owen said.

She said key challenges such as increasing housing supply and making planning more streamlined and improving productivity are being addressed.

“These are all good things and those are the kind of things we need to deliver more to make housing more affordable,” Ms Owen said.

“What we are still lacking, though we know it can make a difference, is addressing the supply side, such as taxing housing to make it less attractive as an investment.”

Macao’s science and tech innovation enterprises deepen global integration and strengthen international ties

MACAO, Nov. 24, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Jointly organised by Sands China and the Macao Economic and Technological Development Bureau (DSEDT), the five-day Macao Technological Innovation Exploration in Lisbon has successfully concluded. Supported by the Macao Science and Technology Development Fund (FDCT), and coordinated by the Sands Resorts Incubation Centre, the Nov. 10-14 trip was aimed at promoting the long-term growth of Macao’s technological innovation industry and fostering industry exchange between Macao and Portugal through a variety of activities and opportunities.

Sands China leads a delegation comprising representatives from 25 DSEDT-certified Macao enterprises and Macao startups incubated within the National Co-working Space scheme on a trip to Lisbon for the company’s five-day Macao Technological Innovation Exploration in Lisbon Nov. 10-14.
Sands China leads a delegation comprising representatives from 25 DSEDT-certified Macao enterprises and Macao startups incubated within the National Co-working Space scheme on a trip to Lisbon for the company’s five-day Macao Technological Innovation Exploration in Lisbon Nov. 10-14.

The trip’s 38-member delegation comprised representatives from 25 DSEDT-certified Macao enterprises, Macao startups incubated within the National Co-working Space scheme, and the organising entities. The visit gave all a valuable opportunity to gain exposure to emerging trends, technologies and industry insights, to exchange ideas with industry pioneers, and to explore how Lisbon’s tech and innovation ecosystem can benefit the integrated resort and technology industries in Macao, yielding fruitful results.

“Last year’s inaugural trip to Lisbon was widely acclaimed,” said Grant Chum, chief executive officer and executive director of Sands China Ltd. “This year, the five-day trip returned with even greater impact, providing a forward-looking international platform for a new cohort of Macao enterprises to broaden their horizons. It injected fresh momentum into innovation while establishing meaningful connections with Lisbon companies and achieving tangible outcomes. Renowned as an annual global technology event, the Web Summit was one of the highlights of this trip. This year, the summit drew more than 71,000 visitors from 157 countries, demonstrating its global influence and giving delegates an opportunity to gain knowledge of advanced technology and forge connections with their counterparts.

“Our gratitude goes to the Macao Economic and Technological Development Bureau and the Macao Science and Technology Development Fund for their collaboration and support to make this trip possible. Looking ahead, we will continue leveraging our Sands Resorts Incubation Centre to align with the Macao SAR government’s policies and direction in promoting ‘tourism + technology’ and capitalise on Macao’s role as a platform between China and Portuguese-speaking countries to contribute to the city’s diversified economic development.”

The Macao Economic and Technological Development Bureau said in a written statement: “As an important gateway for China’s opening up to the world, Macao enjoys unique advantages including the ‘One Country, Two Systems’ framework, free-port status, a separate customs territory, free flow of capital and information, and close ties with Portuguese-speaking countries. Macao’s technology research industrial park currently under planning will be positioned as a launchpad for the Chinese mainland’s high-quality tech enterprises to expand overseas, a service hub for cutting-edge international tech projects to establish a presence, and a local base for integration of industry, academia, and research. This will further enhance Macao’s own capacity for technological innovation and accelerate its economic transformation and upgrading through innovation-driven development.

“This delegation visit serves as a two-way platform. On one hand, it enables Macao’s tech enterprises to directly understand the latest innovation trends in Portugal and Europe, broadening their international perspective; on the other hand, it fosters deep cooperation with Portuguese-speaking countries and the global industry. Through on-site exchanges, Macao enterprises are encouraged to refine their research and development direction, allowing outstanding projects to bring in foreign investment and go global via Macao, helping the city become a key hub for the convergence of domestic and international technological resources.”

The itinerary began with the Web Summit, the world’s largest technology conference, held annually in Lisbon to bring together the world’s leading experts, innovators, business executives and investors. The Macao delegation attended keynote speeches, masterclass sharing sessions, and forums on artificial intelligence and robotics, exploring cutting-edge technologies and industry applications and connecting with global tech leaders in the process.

A Technology Business Networking Forum hosted by Sands China promoted cooperation and innovation within the technology industry, connecting Macao enterprises with each other and their industry counterparts in Lisbon. The curated networking event featured presentations, panel discussions, and a networking dinner. By sharing experiences, discussing trends and showcasing technologies, it provided a communication platform for delegates to expand their networks and find potential cooperation opportunities.

The nine-panellist forum was composed of four Portuguese enterprises and five tech companies from Macao. Among them were Macao enterprises Vastcom and AKL, who had both participated in last year’s inaugural Lisbon trip; they joined a panel discussion with Rui Falcão, co-founder and CEO of COREangels, to share their experiences and achievements. Additionally, three Macao companies and two from Portugal gave presentations that showcased their business models, opening up opportunities for collaboration.

Paulo Rios de Oliveira, executive board member of the Portuguese Trade and Investment Agency (AICEP), attended the forum and expressed strong support: “I am pleased to join you on behalf of AICEP and to contribute to this shared effort of building bridges and creating opportunities for innovation and business partnership. This forum reflects a common purpose – to strengthen ties, to promote technological development, and to generate value for our companies and communities. Portugal and China share a long history of exchange and mutual understanding. This commitment was reaffirmed recently during the visit of the Portuguese prime minister to China, including to Macao, where cooperation in innovation, advanced industries and sustainable development was highlighted as a shared strategic priority. Macao continues to play a unique role as a bridge of trust, connecting Portugal, China and the Portuguese-speaking world. This bridge is not only cultural. It is institutional and economical, and it provides a strong basis for collaboration growing forward.”

The delegation made structured visits to Portuguese enterprises, where they gained an in-depth understanding of innovative models and practical experiences, established connections, and promoted exchange and cooperation:

  • Bhout – Developer of a smart punching bag powered by AI and real-time performance analytics, creating gamified fitness experiences for gyms, hotels, and cooperations.
  • Lipolis Lisbon’s innovation hub supporting startups and established companies in technology and health sectors with programmes for business acceleration, training, and networking.

Finally, Sands China hosted a Concrete Opportunities Workshop, engaging all delegates in collaborative discussions on opportunities for innovation. It featured Manuel Tanger, faculty member in Disruption, Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Singularity University Portugal. He introduced the innovation landscape in Lisbon, provided insights on working with startups, and guided participants on a collaborative exploration to map out innovation opportunities and determine next steps.

The Macao Technological Innovation Exploration in Lisbon is part of Sands China’s support of the Macao SAR government’s promotion of the long-term and sustainable development of smart tourism and high-tech industries. A total of 42 local enterprises have gone to Portugal on the 2024 and 2025 tours. Through such initiatives, Sands China hopes to further integrate tourism and modern technology by supporting the research and development of new high-tech local products, in contribution to Macao’s development as a world centre of tourism and leisure.

Archaeologists retrieve first treasure items from $20B ‘Holy Grail’ shipwreck off Colombia

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Archaeologists in Colombia have retrieved the first items from the fabled San José galleon, a wreck known as the “Holy Grail of shipwrecks” due to its sheer amount of treasure.

The galleon, which sank in the Caribbean Sea in 1708 during an attack by a British fleet, has been the subject of intense scrutiny and international disputes since it was discovered in 2015.

The shipwreck is believed to contain about 11 million gold and silver coins, along with emeralds and other valuable cargo. Its treasure is worth as much as $20 billion.

The San José was carrying chests full of jewels and gold coins when it sank on its way to King Philip V of Spain.

On Thursday, Colombia’s culture ministry announced that archaeologists have recovered a porcelain cup, three coins and a cannon from the site.

Pictures released by the government show President Gustavo Petro marveling at the ancient bronze cannon that was retrieved, which has remained in remarkable condition.

The recently-announced artifacts represent just a fraction of what the ship was carrying when it sank over 300 years ago.

Colombia and Spain have both claimed ownership rights to the treasure. Colombia is in arbitration litigation with Sea Search Armada, a group of U.S. investors that claims it discovered the wreck in 1982.

Petro’s government has affirmed that the deep-water expedition is focused on research, not treasure hunting.

Though the San Jose galleon remains the world’s most valuable known shipwreck, other notable maritime discoveries have surfaced in 2025.

Amtrak president urges travelers to book holiday trains ‘as soon as’ they can

0

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

As Americans begin their Thanksgiving travels, Amtrak has set a new record.

The company provided 34.5 million customer trips in fiscal year 2025, up 6% year over year.

“There’s a genuine interest in passenger rail travel throughout the country,” said Roger Harris, Amtrak’s president, in an interview with Fox News Digital.

NEW TSA POLICY MAY CHARGE PASSENGERS WHO DO NOT HAVE ACCEPTABLE IDS AT CHECKPOINTS

“We’re working really hard to put a better product out there every day, increase capacity and get schedules that are more convenient for customers to take,” he also noted.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said in a recent press release that there’s a bright future ahead for transportation and trains.

“Faster trains, more affordable service and extended routes are opening up a new era of American rail,” said Duffy.

Amtrak will be introducing its new Airo trains in 2026, which will provide modern seating, bigger restrooms and a “contemporary food service experience.”

Harris said, “The Airo service that comes out next year is going to be replacing trains that are 50 years old.”

TRAVEL INDUSTRY SOUNDS ALARM OVER HOW SHUTDOWN WILL IMPACT AMERICANS AHEAD OF THANKSGIVING

With Thanksgiving nearly here, Harris said the all-time record they’re seeing embraces holiday travel as well.

“It’s the busiest time of year here at Amtrak,” said Harris. “We ask customers to try to pack light, because the trains are going to be really full.”

Passengers should remember that trains close two minutes before departure, he said. “You don’t want to leave it till the very last minute to get on the train.”

Harris said train travel is not as hectic as flying — there’s no need, for example, to show up two hours before departure. However, travelers should “plan on being there in time and getting on the train before we leave.”

Nearly 82 million people are expected to travel over Thanksgiving, according to AAA.

Harris said people should book “as soon as” they know their holiday plans.

“The good thing about Amtrak is that we’re very flexible in terms of our ticketing,” he said. “You’re also able to change your tickets on the app in case something comes up at the last minute.”

So far this month, there has been record cold weather in the East, lake-effect snow around the Great Lakes and unsettled weather across the West, according to FOX Weather.

Harris said Amtrak takes many measures to ensure winter travel is as safe and convenient as possible.

“We do things like winterize the trains beforehand to make sure that they don’t freeze up,” he said. “That can be a problem in these extreme weather events. We also make sure our stations are properly maintained for things like slips and falls.”

He added, “It goes back to the whole point about being prepared, making sure that people get to the station in plenty of time, so that they don’t risk difficult weather conditions.”

“If you can travel on trains at less popular times a day, you can save money,” said Amtrak’s president. (Amtrak)

Recently, some customers have taken to social media to call out Amtrak’s pricing.

Another user wrote, “I know Amtrak prices are famously fickle, but I think this is the funniest disparity I’ve ever seen.” The person shared a photo of a $20 train ticket — and another ticket priced at $236.

Harris said that “it’s true that with the tremendous interest we have in train travel today, trains are really full and that does have the impact of driving up prices.”

‘Stakes are high.’ With shutdown over, airlines predict record numbers of travelers this Thanksgiving

U.S. airlines are predicting another record Thanksgiving holiday travel period and are upbeat now that the travel-snarling government shutdown has ended.

Airlines will carry more than 31 million people between Friday, Nov. 21, and Monday, Dec. 1, Airlines for America, a lobbying group representing the largest U.S. carriers, predicted Thursday. The busiest days are expected to be the Sunday after Thanksgiving, with about 3.4 million people flying, followed by the Monday after Thanksgiving, with around 3.1 passengers.

Airline executives have expressed relief after the longest-ever government shutdown ended Nov. 12. Shortages of air traffic controllers, who were required to work without their regular pay, delayed and canceled flights, disrupting travel plans for some 6 million people, A4A said.

The industry is now pushing lawmakers to pass legislation to ensure that air traffic controllers are paid in the case of another shutdown, with executives complaining in recent weeks about air travel becoming a political bargaining chip. The latest bill funds the government only through January, so industry members are hoping to avoid a repeat of the closure just before winter break and spring break seasons begin.

Bank of America estimated the big network airlines could see an operating income hit of $150 million to $200 million and smaller carriers would see an impact of $100 million because of the shutdown, but airlines haven’t yet come out with revised estimates.

Some travelers appeared to be waiting until the shutdown ended before booking their travel.

United Airlines said bookings between Nov. 15 and Nov. 16 were up 16% compared with the prior weekend, when air travel disruptions spiked.

The carrier also said bookings for international trips are at a record for the holiday period, up 10% over last year, with Cancun, Mexico, and major European hubs in London and Frankfurt, Germany, as top destinations.

Overall, United forecast it will fly 6.6 million customers between Nov. 20 and Dec. 2., up more than 4% from last year.

The largest U.S. carriers’ international capacity is up about 5% between Nov. 26 and Nov. 30 compared with a similar period last year, according to aviation-data firm Cirium, while domestic capacity is about 2% higher.

American Airlines said it plans to run 80,759 flights from Nov. 20 through Dec. 2., more than any airline.

“The Thanksgiving holiday period is one of the most condensed and most important for our customers — the stakes are high, and the American team is ready to deliver,” American’s Chief Operating Officer David Seymour said in a news release.

Not all airlines have beefed up their schedules, however. Budget carrier Spirit Airlines, in its second bankruptcy in less than a year, has slashed capacity and furloughed hundreds of pilots to cut costs as it seeks to find more solid financial footing.

Spirit’s domestic flying capacity is down close to 40% from a year earlier, Cirium data shows.

Bat colony causes resident grief in Gympie and forces council to consider property buyback scheme

0

A Queensland council has been forced to consider a new property buyback scheme due to noise and health issues from an unlikely source, which are feared to have reduced property values to “basically zero”.

Gympie Regional Council are now considering drastic measures to alleviate residents sick of dealing with a large and disruptive flying fox population, and are calling on the state and federal government for help.

Residents neighbouring Commissioners Gully in Gympie said the native bats have been growing in number over the past four years.

Christopher Nevin said he and his partner bought knowing there were bats in the area, however, the bats have begun to cause more issues in recent times due to their numbers.

“It’s mostly just noise and droppings that are the biggest issue,” he said.

“We’ve had three dead bats (in the yard) that have we’ve had to scoop up and throw in the bin.”

Nevin said he was worried about potential health issues, and has also suffered damage to his house and fence from fallen branches caused by the bats.

He said he would like to see council “bulldoze the dead trees” and “reclaim the area” by building a park in the area instead.

Gympie Mayor Glen Hartwig said state and federal government should be pulling out their “chequebook” to assist people impacted by the bats and has publically backed a potential buyback scheme.

“It’s a problem we’ve been dealing with for a number of years, we’re looking to advocate state and federal government to change legislation so that the residents there will no longer continue to suffer,” he said.

“The residents were there first and the bats have moved in, and they’ve created a circumstance for them where their mental health is suffering, their properties have been devalued to basically zero and the opportunity to move these bats on is restricted significantly by the legislations in place.”

Hartwig said higher forms of government have “created the circumstances” and should be ready to “compensate these people by buying out the properties or assisting council in moving (the bats) on”.

“State and federal governments need to come to the party with a chequebook and assist these residents, they moved there decades ago, before the bats,” he said.

“Their lives have been significant impacted…their lives are more important than the bats.”

Flying foxes are protected under the Nature Conservation Act in Queensland and are also protected at a federal level.

Some species, including the grey-headed Flying-fox, are listed as vulnerable.

Conservation groups say flying foxes are vital for the health of native forests, and act as crucial pollinators and seed dispersers.

Nevin said the buyback scheme would only work if they were offered a reasonable sum of money.

“We have a mortgage, it would only be ok if we could pay off the entire mortgage and set ourselves up for a new place, because if we are financially worse off that would be horrible.”

Councils are allowed to manage flying fox numbers in urban areas by trimming tree branches, and other non-lethal deterrents such as sprinklers.

A father and son recently stumbled across a massive cache of old artillery shells in Czech forest — triggering a two-day operation involving a bomb squad.

The Police of the Czech Republic said the discovery was reported by a 48-year-old father who had gone metal detecting with his son on Oct. 28.

The pair were less than 1,000 feet away from the Czech-Polish border crossing in Bartošovice, nestled in the Orlické Mountains.

The father told officials that he had “found an object resembling ammunition in a forested area,” according to the translation of a release issued on Oct. 31.

Once alerted, police officers were “immediately dispatched to secure the area and conduct an initial investigation,” the statement read.

“The man explained that while recreationally metal detecting with his underage son, he had unearthed a suspicious metal object at a depth of about 30 centimeters,” the police said in the press release.

“Because of the nature of the find, police called in a specialist bomb technician.”

During the two-day search, a bomb disposal expert found a whopping 138 105 mm artillery shells, 14 75 mm shells and 5 cartridge cases.

All munitions were transported to a specialized storage facility in Ralsko, which is also home to a former military airport.

As reported by Czech outlet České noviny, the artifacts likely date back to World War II.

“The police thank citizens who act responsibly in such situations, as their vigilance and prompt reporting allow experts to intervene safely, minimize risk and protect lives and property,” the release said.

Authorities urged the public to act similarly if they encounter suspicious objects, especially if they’re ammunition or explosives.

“Do not handle the object,” police said.

Lions storm into AFLW grand final with big win over Blues

0

Ruby Svarc has dazzled with a career-best haul as the Brisbane Lions hit top gear to trounce Carlton and set up a third-straight AFLW grand final clash with North Melbourne.

Svarc, who had just 17 goals in her previous 55 games, slotted four to power a third-quarter blitz in Saturday night’s 10.7 (67) to 5.2 (32) in front of 6511 fans at Brighton Homes Arena.

The hosts kicked five goals in 11 minutes to break the contest open after halftime, with Dakota Davidson adding a highlight reel effort from the pocket in a thrilling six-goal third term.

Brisbane’s ninth-straight win, after a week of spicy back-and-forth banter between the sides, reversed the result of their Round 3 meeting.

It will be the two-time premiers’ fourth-straight grand final appearance and seventh in 10 seasons.

And it ensured the Lions and Kangaroos, on a 26-game unbeaten run, will meet again in a third-straight decider next Saturday after the defending champions survived a scare to beat Melbourne by 10 points.

The Lions hammered away in the first quarter but were sloppy and had little to show for their 12 inside-50 entries in a goalless term.

Carlton were clean at the other end, a series of pinpoint kicks finishing with Dayne Finn playing on and kicking the quarter’s only goal.

The hosts remained frantic in the second term and it was Svarc, who had never kicked more than two goals in a game, who settled to take the spoils.

First she scooped up a loose ball, raced clear of the contest and, after giving and receiving a handball, kicked a goal on the run.

Then she regathered from her own smothered shot on goal to slot a second major in quick time.

The Blues replied, Tara Bohanna’s pinpoint kick finding Poppy Scholz in the goal square.

Taylor Smith soccered another through for Brisbane, before Sholz’s second from a free kick made it a five-point margin at the main break.

Svarc wasn’t done, a banana kick from the pocket delivering her third before she found more open space and hit Courtney Hodder on the chest.

Hodder converted for a 17-point lead and then it was party time when Dakota Davidson tapped towards the boundary and somehow finessed the tight angle for another brilliant goal.

The floodgates were wide open when Blues defender Harriet Cordner was pinged for a deliberate rushed behind.

Ellie Hampson snuck the goal through, before Davidson’s second – a clean strike from 45 metres – made it five goals in 11 minutes.

Sophie McKay dragged one back for the Blues, but the sweet-striking Hampson had the reply with the final act of an exhilarating quarter.

Svarc then completed the dream night, pouncing on a loose ball to swing through her fourth goal and all-but end the contest early in the fourth term.
