Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky said the rental platform could become an Amazon for travel as the company adds hotels and new services in its latest push to become an everything app for vacationers.
“I imagine one day we’ll have dozens, possibly even hundreds of categories, just like Amazon,” CEO Brian Chesky told CNBC’s Andrew Ross Sorkin. “I think we can build a little bit, like an Amazon for services, at least for traveling and living.”
Airbnb on Wednesday added independent hotels and services such as car rentals, grocery delivery and luggage storage to its app, in its latest expansion beyond home rentals.
Guests can also book boutique hotels on Airbnb, and the company is incentivizing users with up to 15% back in platform credits.
Chesky said the new additions build on the growing services needs in a “very fragmented” travel and living market. He told CNBC that the company would also consider adding equipment rentals for activities like surfing and skiing, and gym passes down the road.

Airbnb is in the middle of a multi-phase redesign after dialing back initial expansion plans during the Covid-19 pandemic. Last summer, the company launched a services business with 10 categories, in a major app design overhaul.
Since then, Airbnb has brought social features to the platform and an updated artificial intelligence chatbot.
The company’s AI strategy is also getting another upgrade this year.
Airbnb said its chatbot tool can now fix booking issues within the chat, and the company is adding an AI feature that summarizes guest reviews. Later this year, the company plans to bring AI voice assistant to its chatbot and AI-generated summaries for listings.
Business chief Dave Stephenson said Airbnb is using a combination of tools from open-source and large language model makers for its AI features.
“We’re very judicious in using the right model for the right purpose, which is again why I say we end up using this mix,” he said.
Chesky said the market for AI is moving much faster than he expected, but there’s a concentration of companies competing in the same market. He believes consumer AI is the “next frontier” as people change the way they live.
“I would caution everyone plowing all their money in right now, thinking there’s just a couple winners,” he said. “I think the biggest winners of AI may not have even emerged yet.”

As the summer season gets underway, the travel industry is grappling with a spike in fuel prices, spurred by the ongoing war in Iran.
Earlier this month, Airbnb said cancellations were “slightly elevated” in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and the Asia Pacific regions due to the war. The company also expects a 100-basis-point headwind to nights and seats booked during the current period.
Chesky said Airbnb is one of the “most resilient” travel companies in the world because the company is exposed to many geographic areas and traveler groups, and is typically more affordable.
“What we are seeing is when there’s economic uncertainty, people plan their travel a little bit more last-minute,” he said.

A grieving woman unearthed an unusually large diamond at a state park just days after burying her father — and months after losing her son.
Keshia Smith, a resident of Pennsylvania, found the 3.09-carat diamond at Arkansas’ Crater of Diamonds State Park in Pike County last month.
Officials described the “gorgeous” gem as having “a flat, smooth appearance” and measuring about the size of a bead.

“It is colorless, with a few unique inclusions around the edges,” a May press release from Arkansas State Parks noted.
Park officials said that Smith planned her April vacation to the park over a year ago.

After losing her son in October and burying her father just days before the trip, Smith hoped the outing would bring “some much-needed comfort.”
“She made the road trip with her boyfriend Joey and brother Kirim, and arrived at the park on Tuesday, April 21,” officials said.
She spent her first day scouring the park and meeting other visitors before heading to the south end of the search area the next morning.
After receiving tips from other visitors, Smith began digging — and soon “saw the colors of the soil change from brown to black.”

“After a couple more scoops, she spotted something shiny in her shovel,” Arkansas State Parks said.
Skeptical at first, Smith placed the stone in her bag. She continued digging before later bringing it to the park’s wash pavilion to sift through her finds.

As she showed the crystal to other visitors, one person urged her to have it examined.
According to the release, Smith “was overcome with joy and started crying, laughing and hugging everyone around her.”
“I really prayed for this, and I just can’t believe it actually happened!”
She compared the diamond’s shape to a heart, which she said was “the first thing I saw when I found it.”
Smith told officials she’s been “feeling a lot of pressure” in recent months.

“In October I lost my son, and we just buried my dad a week ago … I really needed this,” she said, as the released indicated.
“I really prayed for this, and I just can’t believe it actually happened!”

Over the past decade, just 15 diamonds weighing 3 carats or more have been discovered at the park, said Caleb Howell, park superintendent Caleb Howell.
Howell told Fox News Digital that park officials do not appraise found diamonds, as staff are not trained gemologists.

“Most gemologists would not know how to appraise our diamonds because they are natural stones and have not been ‘cut,'” said Howell.
“However, I like to think our diamonds are even more special because diamonds from a jewelry store have been handled by several humans before they ended up in that counter space.”
“Our diamonds are like snowflakes,” he added. “Of all the ones I have seen, they are unique in clarity, color and carat.”

Howell said the digging experience gives each diamond added sentimental value.
“Think about it — this place is very, very special,” he said.

Pendlebury this Saturday will play his 433rd game at AFL level, going past North Melbourne legend Brent Harvey’s previous high mark of 432.

Collingwood deliberately orchestrated the management of Pendlebury to ensure he would break the record in front of a home crowd at the MCG, which in itself has drawn criticism, given the Magpies have narrowly lost the two games he has rested in the past three weeks.
But for as much on-field conjecture as the impending new record has caused, there has been just as much off-field drama.
During the match, Pendlebury will wear 12 special limited edition jumpers with a gold number 10 on the back and the names of every player he’s ever played with on the front. The jumpers will then be auctioned off after the game.
He also has special boots designed by his kids; there will be a commemorative coin to toss before the game; the AFL took out an ad in the Herald Sun on Wednesday to write an open letter to Pendlebury; and the official AFL Record has been renamed to The Scott Pendlebury for the week.
Pendlebury will receive 100 per cent of all revenue made from the memorabilia of his milestone.
Under the current CBA signed in 2023, players celebrating milestone matches of significance are entitled to 65 per cent of the revenue made from commercial memorabilia. The AFL has allowed special dispensation for Pendlebury to get 100.
“This has become a complete circus, and I’m not even sure it’s Scott Pendlebury’s fault,” Tom Morris said on Wednesday night’s edition of The Agenda Setters.
Nick Riewoldt said it’s a shame the controversy is beginning to overshadow what should be a rare celebration of one of the game’s greats.
“I’m sick of talking about it, to be honest,” Riewoldt said.
“The boots design by his kids, that’s what we should be talking about – the heartwarming aspect to this story, because it is an unbelievable achievement and we all recognise Pendles as one of the greats of the game.
“This should be a celebration, plain and simple – but it’s not. It just hasn’t been that.”
Morris added: “A lot of people will blame the media for this.
“I know people internally, the AFL and Collingwood, are saying this is the media’s fault for creating a circus.”

But Riewoldt said the blame rests with league headquarters.
“There’s the issue around the way Pendles has been managed and we’ve dealt with that,” he said.
“But once again, with respect to the way this game has been commercialised, it’s rules on the run – again from the AFL.
“What that’s done, I think it’s opened Scott up to ridicule and to criticism from other football fans. Not Collingwood; they’re not going to turn on him obviously.
“But other football fans and even other clubs to the point that people are saying that this is turning into a GoFundMe for Scott Pendlebury.
“When you have a salary cap, you can’t allow this, if you’re the AFL, to this extent. This is just rules on the run and a free-for-all.”
Morris said “clubs are saying the same things behind the scenes”.
“Senior officials at clubs can’t believe how this is being handled by league headquarters. ‘Another own goal’, one CEO told me today,” he added.
Geelong coach Chris Scott was asked about the situation at his weekly press conference on Wednesday.
“When I have thought more about the nuance of the soft cap and the salary cap, I’ve tended to get frustrated because some of it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me. Especially the bit that seems to be a bit more case by case,” he said.
Riewoldt said things could get even murkier if a very wealthy supporter of Pendlebury decides to pay an exorbitant amount for one of the jumpers, for example, which would go straight into the Collingwood champion’s pocket and essentially skew the balance of the salary cap.
“How are the AFL going to handle this? Because at the moment, it’s completely unclear. If a donor says, ‘You know what, one of those match-worn jumpers, I’m going to pay $1 million for it’, as like a golden handshake – what do the AFL do in that situation?” Riewoldt posed.
The AFL will audit all funds transferred to Pendlebury, but has put no cap on how much he can receive.
“That’s why it’s opened up the conversation that it has,” Riewolt said.
“On a week where we’re four days out, we should be celebrating one of the all-time great careers and all-time great people of football.”
