Fremantle midfielder Nathan O’Driscoll reveals battle with anxiety

0

Fremantle winger Nathan O’Driscoll has opened up on his battle with anxiety, revealing he has been on the brink of taking his own life on three separate occasions during “deep depressive states”.

The 23-year-old said “it feels like the right time” to speak up about his struggles, which comes after Carlton midfielder Elijah Hollands’ mental health episode against Collingwood in Round 6, and the passing of Adelaide captain Jordan Dawson’s brother.

Hollands was admitted to hospital last Monday night, four days after his erratic and concerning performance against the Magpies.

Dawson missed the Crows’ clash with St Kilda later that round as he begun to grieve the loss of his older brother Jaryd, whose body was found on April 15 after a 24-hour search.

O’Driscoll, who has played 40 games in six seasons at the Dockers, said he wanted others to know their struggles are normal.

“I wasn’t going to post this, but with the recent focus on mental health around the league, it feels like the right time,” he wrote on Instagram on Wednesday.

“Over the past four years, I’ve had some incredible highs, but also some very low moments. I’ve struggled with anxiety, a constant need to feel like I belong, and always putting others before myself.

“There have been times where I’ve fallen into deep depressive states and three separate times where I’ve been extremely close to committing suicide.

“I’m sharing this because speaking up matters. No one is there to judge you, every person I’ve opened up to has supported me in ways I never expected.”

O’Driscoll said the perception of an AFL player’s life and the reality can be two starkly different things.

“From the outside, it might look like I have everything, but what’s going on internally can be a very different story. Everyone is dealing with something, and it’s okay to not be okay,” he added.

The midfielder went on to reveal he has recently lost someone within his close circle, which has naturally made things even tougher.

“I’ve always tried to be a positive, selfless person, but I’ve learned it’s okay to put yourself first sometimes. Valuing yourself is just as important as valuing others,” he said.

“The past few weeks have been especially tough after losing someone close to me, but leaning on my family, friends, and teammates has meant everything. I’m incredibly grateful for the people around me.

“There is so much good in this world. Whatever you’re going through, it will get better. Reach out, stay connected, and be kind to yourself.

“You are loved. You are seen. You are heard. Much love, Nath.”

The heavy post follows calls from players, including Geelong midfielder Bailey Smith and Western Bulldogs defender Rory Lobb, for a men’s mental health round to be introduced into the AFL fixture in the wake of the events of the past month.

O’Driscoll’s teammates rushed to his support, flooding the comments with messages of love.

His younger brother Aiden, who was drafted to the Western Bulldogs but was medically forced to retire before playing a game, wrote: “We all love you Nath. I’ll always be here for you, the best big brother anyone could ask for ❤️ You’re such a good person bro🤩.”

Aiden O’Driscoll retired from the AFL at age 18 due to serious concussion suffered at training, just months after being drafted.

Aiden and Nathan are also the brothers of Dockers AFLW star Emma O’Driscoll.

U.S. airlines are hiking fares — and travelers keep booking

Jet fuel prices have surged this year since the attacks on Iran that began two months ago led to the Strait of Hormuz effectively closing. For now, airline executives say travelers are still flying, increasingly covering the bill.

The price spike hit just ahead of spring break and is eating into airline profits this year. But the booking trends show resilient consumers are prioritizing travel, and executives have a bright outlook for the peak summer demand months, which now trail off in August. There are still questions about how demand will hold toward the end of the year since travelers don’t tend to book that far in advance.

In March, travel-agency ticket sales rose 12% from a year ago to $10.4 billion, with the number of domestic trips up 5% and international up 1%, according to the Airlines Reporting Corp.

Domestic economy ticket prices are up 21% from a year earlier to an average of $570, while premium-seat prices rose 17% to an average $1,444 per trip, ARC data released April 16 shows.

Despite higher fares, “bookings have remained resilient amidst these changes, which is an encouraging sign,” JetBlue Airways CEO Joanna Geraghty said Tuesday on an earnings call.

Airlines’ expectations

U.S. airlines have reported that the Iran war is adding more than $6 billion and counting to their costs this year.

But JetBlue and major carriers this month told Wall Street that they expect customers to cover the higher jet fuel costs by early 2027, if not the end of this year. Carriers have trimmed capacity to cut costs, which also can boost airfare.

JetBlue on Tuesday forecast second-quarter revenue would increase as much as 11% from a year earlier even as Geraghty called the war’s impact the industry’s biggest headwind since the Covid pandemic.

American Airlines on Thursday said it expects an increase of 13.5% to 16.5% in revenue for the second quarter.

“We’ve always been really sharp in terms of managing our load factors, and we see our loads keeping pace with the capacity adds,” American CEO Robert Isom said on an earnings call. “That would suggest that we’re seeing the real benefit in yields right now.”

Delta Air Lines and United Airlines, which make up the majority of the U.S. industry’s profits, were also upbeat about fare growth, especially as airlines depend more on growth from seats like first class or premium economy that can cost thousands of dollars more than economy-class options.

Low-cost, domestic-focused airlines, which tend to have fewer premium options, have struggled. Budget carriers represented by the Association of Value Airlines, including Frontier Airlines and Avelo Airlines are seeking $2.5 billion in relief from the Trump administration to help cover the jump in fuel prices, the group said Monday.

Frontieris set to brief Wall Street analysts next week about its outlook for the year and will likely face questions about its ability to recapture costs with lower average fares than large rivals.

Even if oil prices come down, it’s not likely to mean immediate relief for jet fuel prices, since that product includes refining and transportation costs that take longer to show up.

“It’s possible especially given air ticket prices have grown well below general inflation since COVID” that fares stay high, wrote UBS airline analyst Atul Maheswari on Monday. “As such, we think there is room for airfares to go up and stay higher. This could drive significant earnings growth and margin expansion for airlines in 2027 should jet fuel prices moderate. That said, we think demand would need to hold steady for airlines to maintain pricing next year.”

JetBlue is full steam ahead on Fort Lauderdale, regardless of Spirit’s fate

0

JetBlue Airways is moving forward with its flight plans at Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport, its president said, regardless of whether the airport’s No. 1 carrier, Spirit Airlines, gets a government bailout.

JetBlue, United Airlines, Frontier Airlines, Breeze Airways and others added flights last year at Fort Lauderdale, Florida, which is Spirit’s home hub as well as at other major airports where Spirit has a large presence. Those moves came shortly after Spirit filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection for the second time in less than a year.

As a possible liquidation looms, budget carrier Spirit is in talks with the Trump administration for a potential bailout that could include a $500 million loan that could also give the government an up to 90% stake, people familiar with the matter have said, requesting anonymity to talk about the deal before it’s public. The airline’s lenders are assessing a deal this week.

Spirit has cut its capacity in recent years to save on costs. In February, it still had the most market share at Fort Lauderdale with nearly 25%, down from more than 28% a year earlier, while JetBlue’s share grew to more than 20%, up from 18.5% a year earlier, according to the latest available statistics from the airport.

“We have now added significant capacity” there, JetBlue’s president, Marty St. George, said on an earnings call Tuesday. “We’ve doubled the size of our next biggest competitor.

“We did not go into this with any expectation of Spirit going away,” he added. “What we have done is we’ve taken advantage of gate availability that they’ve created with some of their pulldowns.”

He added that JetBlue was happy with its unit revenue there, even with the capacity additions. “I think what it shows is that the JetBlue value proposition resonates in South Florida,” he said.

The industry is grappling with a surge in fuel prices, but JetBlue and other carriers have so far reported that customers continue to book flights.

The Association of Value Airlines, of which JetBlue isn’t a member, on Monday said it is seeking $2.5 billion from the Trump administration to help offset the jump in fuel, airlines’ second-biggest expense after labor.

JetBlue CEO Joanna Geraghty said the airline is open to “anything and everything, assuming the terms would make sense for JetBlue,” but added the airline is focused on its JetForward strategy to return to profitability, including adding new products like domestic first-class seats.

She said that the carrier is watching the situation and seeing what “shakes out with Spirit and value carriers and whether anything comes their way,” she said.

CGTN: What China’s strong start to the 15th FYP period signals

0

CGTN examines reasons behind the resilience and vitality of the Chinese economy. China is unswervingly deepening reform and opening up, advancing self-reliance in science and technology, ensuring the autonomy of industrial chains, and strengthening the internal drivers of economic growth all key factors behind the remarkable performance of Chinas economy at the start of the 15th Five-Year Plan.

BEIJING, April 29, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — The Chinese economy has started strong in the 15th Five-Year Plan period (2026-2030) despite external pressure and trade tensions, according to the meeting the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee held on Tuesday. The economic growth remains steady, industrial capacity continues to improve, and policy support is helping stabilize expectations.

What China's strong start to the 15th FYP period signals
What China’s strong start to the 15th FYP period signals

For an economy of China’s scale, maintaining this level of momentum not only proves its resilience but also its capacity to adapt and keep advancing under changing conditions.

The policy direction of the 15th Five-Year Plan, instead of relying primarily on land, property, and heavy investment, as the old growth playbook was wont to, is turning toward technology, innovation, and high-quality development.

By focusing on new quality productive forces – high-tech, high efficiency and high quality, in line with the new green development philosophy – China is aiming not just to grow faster but to grow smarter, with better productivity, stronger competitiveness, and more sustainable development.

During the January-March period, high-tech manufacturing saw strong growth, with profits rising 47.4%, adding 7.9 percentage points to overall industrial profit growth, according to the National Bureau of Statistics. Rapid advances in AI and semiconductor-related industries boosted profits in optical fiber manufacturing by a whopping 336.8%, optoelectronic device manufacturing (43%), and display device manufacturing (36.3%).

The 15th Five-Year Plan comes at a time when China is making steady progress in opening-up. China currently has 23 pilot free trade zones, which account for about 20% of the country’s foreign investment and trade. The negative list for foreign investment, which tabulates the sectors out of bounds for foreign investors, has been shortened to 29 items. Notably, all restrictions on foreign investment in manufacturing have been removed.

China’s opening-up is no longer only about trade volume or foreign investment. It is increasingly about institutional openness, market access, improved business environments, and stronger alignment with international standards.

At the same time, domestic demand is becoming an important engine of growth. At a press briefing on April 17, the National Development and Reform Commission said there would be a special action plan to expand domestic demand from 2026 to 2030.

As the second largest economy, China’s domestic market means immense potential and unlocking that potential will support more stable and sustainable expansion. By strengthening consumption and expanding domestic circulation, the country is building a broader foundation for development.

Instead of simply chasing short-term gains, China is thinking carefully about how to build a stronger and more balanced economy over time. The 15th Five-Year Plan begins with real strengths: the economy has shown resilience, opening-up continues to expand in quality and depth, and domestic demand is being given greater strategic importance.

These are all signs of a confident and adaptive development approach. Rather than seeing the current challenges as setbacks, China is using them to upgrade its growth model and build a more dynamic future.

Wests Tigers superstar Jarome Luai to join PNG Chiefs for 2028 NRL season

0

NRL superstar Jarome Luai has reportedly agreed to a deal with the PNG Chiefs and already informed the Wests Tigers of his intention to leave at the end of the 2027 season.

Luai will be the marquee signing for the expansion franchise, and the five-eighth is expected to publicly confirm the move on Wednesday.

The Wests Tigers superstar spent last weekend in PNG and met with Prime Minister James Marape and senior club officials.

“To be the first high-profile player to come and show interest in our team is something we deeply appreciate,” Marape told local media.

“It sends a message that Papua New Guinea is ready, rugby league is strong here, and our future in the NRL is bright.”

Luai flew to PNG and back on a private jet with his family, touching down in Sydney on Monday evening to a media scrum.

He is due to front a press conference at Wests Tigers headquarters on Wednesday morning where he will officially confirm that he is joining the Chiefs in 2028.

A four-time premiership winner with Penrith, the playmaker has the Tigers flying in third spot on the ladder.

But the temptation to be the face of a new franchise and earn a tax-free $1.2 million-a-season deal with the Chiefs appears to have proven too good to turn down.

Luai, 29, will activate an option to spend 2027 with the Tigers for the same money before then heading to Port Moresby and become the face of the Chiefs.

The news comes after the Chiefs announced that South Sydney try-scoring freak Alex Johnston was their historic first signing.

Johnston made history for the second time this year after becoming the first player to commit to the Chiefs ahead of their entry to the competition in 2028.

The 31-year-old confirmed the move on Tuesday in an Instagram story post with the words “Yessssss sirrrrrrr”.

Johnston, meanwhile, will join the new club on a one-year deal understood to be worth a tax-free $325,000.

He passed Ken Irvine’s long-standing NRL try-scoring record earlier this season with his 212th and 213th four-pointers for the Rabbitohs.

The 250-game veteran has since moved to a career tally of 219 tries.

Johnston, who will be 33 in 2028, received the blessing of Souths coach Wayne Bennett earlier this year to join the PNG franchise given his strong ties with the country.

The winger made his Test debut for the Kumuls in 2019, scoring four tries in 12 internationals for the league-obsessed nation.

AAP revealed last August that Johnston had the option to sign with the Chiefs before November 1.

In a measure of his standing and popularity at the Rabbitohs, Johnston also has the support of teammates.

“Yeah, he told us this morning. Look, you’ve got to be happy for the bloke,” said prop Sean Keppie.

“He’s given so much to the game and to see him get that first position over there is pretty cool to see.

“I’m pretty sure they’re going to do some pretty good things over there, so he’ll grab it with both hands and he’s already scored so many tries, hopefully he can score some more, but not against us.”

Air taxis cut hour-long commutes to minutes, riders may be shocked by the price

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Electric air taxis are now moving closer to real-world use, completing test flights designed to turn hour-long commutes into trips lasting just minutes.

Joby Aviation, Inc., said it completed what it described as the first point-to-point electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) air taxi demonstration flights in New York City, the company shared in a press release.

The California-based company said its aircraft departed from John F. Kennedy International Airport and landed across the city’s heliport network, including the West 30th Street and East 34th Street heliports in Midtown, demonstrating trips of under 10 minutes.

The test runs marked “the start of a week-long public campaign across the city’s existing heliport network,” the company said in its release.

Joby said its air taxis, which produce no operating emissions and run quietly, “will be able to connect the region, linking vertiports, international airports, and communities across the New York metropolitan area.”

The New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) interim president said the electric flights “mark a real milestone.”

“These historic Joby flights, linking our city-owned heliport to our airports, [are] proof that the future of advanced air mobility is no longer a Jetsons-esque fantasy — it’s already here,” said NYCEDC president Jeanny Pak.

“In terms of the price point, our target is to be competitive with ground transportation over time,” Joby Aviation’s CEO JoeBen Bevirt told NBC News.

Ride-share prices researched by Fox News Digital indicate that trips between JFK and Midtown can cost $150 to $250, depending on the time of day and traffic conditions.

A handful of social media users weighed in on the flights under Joby’s X post.

According to market research firm QYResearch, the global pickleball equipment market was valued at approximately USD 221 million in 2024 and is expected to reach USD 387 million by 2031, representing a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.2%. With participation rapidly expanding across North America, Europe and the Asia-Pacific, procurement demand continues to climb. Asia — particularly China — has become the world’s largest pickleball paddle manufacturing base, accounting for over 70% of global production capacity.

The show presents a comprehensive pickleball industry ecosystem, bringing together a full lineup of equipment spanning the entire supply chain: paddles crafted from carbon fibre, fibreglass and other composite materials; specialised balls meeting both recreational and tournament standards; and an extensive range of accessories including high-performance athletic shoes, racket grips and paddle bags — covering everything from upstream materials to finished accessories. Exhibitors demonstrate technical breakthroughs in weight control, durability and stroke performance, while offering OEM/ODM customisation services to meet the increasingly diverse procurement needs of global B2B buyers.

Training Camp and Po Leung Kuk Pickleball Expo Cup Put Products to the Test

A newly upgraded Pickleball Training Camp runs concurrently with the show, featuring live demonstrations by Hong Kong’s top-ranked pickleball players, allowing buyers to experience first-hand the feel, performance and fit of different paddles under the guidance of champion coaches. On opening day, the show once again partners with Po Leung Kuk to host the “Pickleball Expo Cup 2026,” validating products’ professional performance and market appeal in an authentic competitive setting, and further promoting this emerging sport.

Urban Sports and Outdoor Demand in Focus with Lightweight Portability as Key Innovation Theme

Another highlight of the show is urban sports and outdoor equipment. City dwellers commonly face the challenge of limited living space yet desire the freedom to head outdoors at any time, driving sustained demand growth for lightweight camping equipment, foldable watersports gear and compact urban fitness accessories.

Exhibitors are driving innovation in lightweight, portable and foldable designs, presenting camping carts made from aerospace-grade aluminium with folding structures, outdoor backpacks equipped with ergonomic carrying systems, as well as portable outdoor refrigerators, camping tents and more. Multi-scenario innovative products command significantly higher price premiums than single-function alternatives, and manufacturers that genuinely address the needs of urban users are well-positioned to enter multiple overseas markets simultaneously.

Global Sources Summit Focuses on Sports Innovation and Sustainable Sourcing

The Global Sources Summit, held concurrently with the show, centres on the theme “Athletic Performance Meets Innovation,” covering forward-looking topics including fitness technology, sports fashion fusion, virtual sportswear and ESG sourcing. Opening day features an “Experts Sharing” session with professional wilderness explorer and wildlife photographer Chris Michael Owen, who draws on first-hand experience from filming in diverse environments to share insights on the real-world performance of high-performance outdoor gear and apparel. On 28 April, under the theme “Global Sports & Outdoor 2026,” the summit explores how sportswear integrates functionality with fashion aesthetics, future outdoor market trends and the application prospects of sustainable materials. On 29 April, the “Next-Level Sourcing” session interprets EU and US sportswear regulations, analyses how shifts in the global trade environment impact sourcing decisions, and helps buyers understand international market requirements whilst optimising supply chain strategies. The summit aims to provide attendees with a comprehensive perspective — from product innovation to sourcing execution — empowering global buyers and suppliers to capture the next wave of growth opportunities in the sports and outdoor industry.

Comprehensive Buyer Service Upgrades Drive Precise Matching and Trade Collaboration

To further enhance the buyer sourcing experience, this edition of the show introduces a number of new services. The upgraded Business Matching service is expected to arrange over 3,000 buyer-supplier matching sessions across all three phases, facilitating collaboration between global buyers with clear sourcing intent and quality suppliers. A Sourcing Connection Desk has been established on-site for the first time, providing comprehensive support to help buyers locate target exhibitors and arrange on-the-spot matching — offering real-time assistance for buyers who were unable to book appointments in advance. In addition, the Hong Kong Show website has launched a new Meet the Exhibitors page, allowing buyers to search by show, product, country or region, with features to contact exhibitors and add events to their calendars for more effective sourcing trip planning. The Global Sources Buyer App has also been fully optimised to deliver a simpler, more personalised user experience that puts information at buyers’ fingertips. The show expects to welcome close to 900 new overseas buyers to participate in on-site matching and networking activities, including high-quality buyers from Western Europe, the United States, Japan and ASEAN.
