‘I named it Jeeves’: Pet owners adore this quiet robovac, and it’s down to $90

0

Make no mistake — we all love our pets. They’re fluffy and adorable, but they can also be pretty messy, even if it’s not their fault. From your shedding cat layering your rug in fur to your dog tracking dirt all over your hardwood floors, our four-legged friends can unintentionally turn our homes into a bit of a mess. The good news? A robovac can help — namely, the OKP Life K2 Robot Vacuum Cleaner, on sale for an unbelievable $90, down from $190. Let this little blue robot do the work for you, so you can spend more time playing with your pets and less time cleaning up after them.

Amazon

Simply program the vac remotely with the OKP app. It’s compatible with Alexa and Google Assistant, so tell your smart-home system to turn on your little robot, and it’ll zoom off.

Why is it a good deal? 💰

Time is money, and the fact that this cleaning gizmo will take “vacuum floors” off of your cleaning to-do list is pretty priceless. That said, some robovacs can cost upwards of $500 (ahem, Roomba), so the fact that this highly rated model can be had for over 50% off is spectacular.

Why do I need this? 🤔

The vac is equipped to handle both wood and carpet flooring, and it has four modes to make fast work of dirt, debris, fur and more. It can follow the wall and automatically clean, spot clean or manually clean, so that a mess of any size is tackled with precision and power. Plus, it’ll run for up to 100 minutes (on low-suction mode) before automatically returning to its charging base to juice up.

What reviewers say 💬

More than 8,700 shoppers give this OKP vac a glowing five-star rating.

Pros 👍

“All I can say is wow,” wrote one pet owner. “With several dogs in my house, I think this will be a godsend. As soon as I received it, I put it together and let it go. I just swept, for the third time, and it picked up hair from under my coffee table, along the walls, and the edge of my furniture.”

Another added: “This vacuum is amazing! I will never sweep my floors again. … Now, we are by no means dirty people, but this really grossed me out to know that our floors were so nasty and hair-covered. The app makes it easy to control — in fact, I’m at work right now while the vacuum is doing my house cleaning at home. Love love love it! Especially if you have pets, this thing is definitely worth it!”

This shopper is beyond thrilled: “I love this thing! I have two dogs, a cat, three kids and a husband. I’m tired of being their maid. I bought my robot vacuum and named it Jeeves. It’s literally the best household purchase I’ve ever made. Saves me so much work.”

“I was skeptical about buying a machine that was not a household name,” said another fan. “Glad I did! It is whisper-quiet! I have three large shedding doggies, and they are constantly bringing in sand and dirt from the backyard. As well as sucking up the kibble my sloppy eaters leave on my kitchen floor. Since it’s so quiet, my prey-driven pups do not even bother with it, score!”

You don’t need to be a pet owner to get the most out of this vac, either: “Love this little guy,” wrote a happy shopper. “I set it to clean by sunrise, so by the time I wake up my floor is clean. It’s very quiet so I don’t hear it in the morning — just when it bumps into my bed. And when I’m on my way to work, I ask Google to set the vacuum to clean.”

Cons 👎

Some customers had issues connecting to the app. “The vacuum works well,” said one, “however, I’ve had it for two years and still have been unable to get it to connect to the app, which means I have to pick it up and move it to the areas needed because I can’t set up areas on my phone.”

This customer agreed: “I love it and it does a great job, but it won’t connect to my Wi-Fi because it’s not 5G compatible. But it gets the job done, just can’t use the app.”

“The product is magnificent and works great,” reported this final reviewer. “The app is little tricky to sign into, but once it’s up and running it works wonders.”

This little vac can run for up to 100 minutes without any sort of help. (Hey, no one said spring cleaning had to be hard.)

Fat Joe is passionate about health and helping people. Here are 4 things he wants you to know.

0

Fat Joe has big ambitions. Known for hip-hop hits like “What’s Luv?” and “Lean Back,” the 54-year-old Bronx native, born Joseph Antonio Cartagena, is coming for the Queen of TV. “I got my eyes on Oprah Winfrey. You know, that’s who I want to be compared to,” he tells Yahoo Life.

That’s the expectation he has for himself as the host of Starz’s new interview series Fat Joe Talks, which premiered Oct. 4. He’ll be having conversations with other greats in the entertainment world but hopes to showcase his guests in a new light. To do that, he’s also opening up in novel ways himself.

Here, he shares what he wants you to know about him, including his personal journey with physical and mental health and his health care advocacy for others.

Over the last 15 years, Fat Joe has lost 215 pounds. And while the transformation has motivated some people to discuss the irony of his stage name, he says there’s a more important conversation to be had.

“We’re losing too many great people too young,” he says, noting his late friend Big Pun. The fellow rapper passed away at just 28 years old in 2000 from an obesity-related heart attack. That was a pivotal moment of self-realization for Joe: “You gotta lose weight or you’re gonna die,” he recalls telling himself. And now that he’s taken the steps to improve his lifestyle, he wants to encourage others to do the same.

“You see me doing it. Everybody gotta do it,” he says. “It’s important that we get educated on that.”

Beyond the physical, Fat Joe has also embarked on bettering his mind. “Talking about [mental health] is easy. Doing it, that was a hard thing for me. You know, I was young, I was into this real tough guy [appearance],” he says.

Experiencing depression is something that he addresses in Episode 1 of the show with his first guest, Method Man.

“I was so depressed. I would come out on a sunny day and [feel] as dark as night. … That’s a tough battle that goes with you everywhere,” he says. “Thank God I went to seek therapy when I did. It changed my life.”

“I’m a big activist with Power to the Patients, where we go to Washington, D.C., to get health care price transparency. So I’ve been doing it for some years now,” says Joe, noting that 100 million Americans are in debt because of health care bills.

He’s particularly passionate about getting people to understand that if costs for health care services were provided to patients upfront, they’d have the opportunity to shop around for the best, most competitive prices.

Joe even invited Congressman Hakeem Jeffries to be featured on his interview series to discuss the issue and says he hopes to bring on other political figures as well. “The health care issue that I’m fighting for is a bipartisan thing,” he says. “So it isn’t just Democrat or Republican, it’s everybody together.”

Joe challenges himself to continue to show up for his community in a bigger and better way and wants other hip-hop artists to do the same.

“I wrote a book, The Book of Jose, and it’s all about vulnerability, it’s all about transparency. You know us as artists, we always want to feel like we’re Godlike on Earth, that nothing bothers us. And so we finally got to a place where we’re old enough and we’re confident enough that we know that there’s people out there, millions of people, that look up to us. It’s very important that they hear these stories of how you came from here to here and you overcame the adversity,” he says of those who will tune into his show. “That’s powerful stuff, and that’s what I want you to get. I want you to be a fly on the wall. Get access that you normally wouldn’t get to your favorite artists. But at the same time, get some form of a message or inspiration to help you get over something you’re going through.”

If his peers have taught him anything through this process, it’s gratitude. Specifically, he recalls a conversation with LL Cool J, whom he calls “my idol,” that was filmed for the Starz series in which the rapper and “NCIS” actor helped Joe to reflect on how far he’s come.

“It resonated,” says Joe. “It was very impactful to me, because I was like, wow, the evolution, you know, God is great. I’ve been able to grow.”

PROMISING CELL THERAPY OFFERS HOPE FOR RELAPSED OR REFRACTORY T-CELL LEUKAEMIA

Fratricide-resistant CD7 CAR-T therapy by NUS proves effective in treating relapsed or refractory T-cell leukaemia

SINGAPORE, Oct. 5, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — A new cell therapy, targeting CD7 on leukaemia cells, gives a potentially effective treatment for patients with T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (T-ALL) who have exhausted all standard treatment options. Published in the prestigious medical journal Nature Medicine on 3 September 2024[1], the study highlights the effectiveness of a new chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy.

Caption: A team of NUS Medicine and NUHS researchers and clinicians have developed a new fratricide-resistant CD7 CAR T-cell therapy that proves effective in treating relapsed or refractory T-cell leukaemia. Photo be credited to the National University Health System (NUHS).

Developed in-house by researchers and clinicians from the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine at the National University of Singapore (NUS Medicine) and the National University Health System (NUHS), the therapy was given to 17 patients between April 2019 and October 2023 at the National University Hospital (NUH) in Singapore and Ospedale Pediatrico Bambino Gesù in Rome, Italy.

All the 17 patients, ranging from two to 72 years of age, had T-ALL that could not be eliminated with chemotherapy or had relapsed after treatment. Using a technology developed in Professor Dario Campana’s laboratory under the Department of Paediatrics at NUS Medicine, the patient’s own T cells were reprogrammed to express an anti-CD7 CAR, and then re-infused into the patients. The anti-CD7 CAR protein redirects the CAR T-cells to kill T-leukaemia cells that have CD7 protein on their surface.

Notably, 16 of the 17 patients achieved complete remission within one month, and leukaemic cells became undetectable even with ultra-sensitive flow cytometry tests that can detect one leukaemia cell in the background of 10,000 normal cells, developed by Ms Elaine Coustan-Smith’s laboratory at NUS Medicine. The same techniques were key to analyse CD7 expression in leukaemic cells and determining patient eligibility as well as to monitor expansion and persistence of CAR-T cells after infusion. The first patient treated with this therapy has been in remission for five years, without needing additional chemotherapy or a bone marrow transplant.

The treatment was well-tolerated, and side effects were mild, given the fact that all patients enrolled had a high tumour burden and had received prolonged and intensive treatment prior to CAR-T therapy.

T-ALL accounts for approximately 10 per cent of ALL cases in children and 25 to 30 per cent in adolescents and young adults[2],[3]. Although 70 to 80 per cent of children are cured with intensive and prolonged chemotherapy, the cure rate in adults remains approximately 60 per cent or lower[4].

Patients with relapsed or refractory T-ALL have less than 10 per cent survival, while in this series, 50 per cent survived. This fratricide-resistant CD7 CAR-T therapy is being trialled in NUH.

Dr Bernice Oh, the first author of the study and a Consultant in the Division of Paediatric Haematology and Oncology at the Khoo Teck Puat – National University Children’s Medical Institute (KTP-NUCMI), NUH, said: “This CAR-T therapy is a new and promising tool to treat T-ALL patients who have failed conventional treatment. These patients had exhausted all potentially curative options, and we are heartened that we could give them another clear chance at cure without severe side-effects. We are committed to seek better cures for patients with complex and treatment-resistant cancers.”

Professor Allen Yeoh, who led the clinical application of this new technology and is Head and Senior Consultant in the Division of Paediatric Haematology and Oncology at NUH’s KTP-NUCMI and the National University Cancer Institute, Singapore, said: “While we celebrate this wonderful milestone, we are only at the beginning of this exciting journey. There is a lot of scientific and medical enquiry to understand how to better use CD7 CAR T-cells. Each patient, in this series, taught us a lot. Ultimately, for every member of our team, seeing each patient smile and given another chance, after achieving remission, is priceless.”  Professor Yeoh is also the VIVA-Goh Foundation Professor in Paediatric Oncology at NUS Medicine.

After a recent solar flare, residents in some northern U.S. states may be able to see the stunning northern lights this weekend.

On Thursday, the sun emitted the strongest solar flare in seven years with a magnitude of X9.0, FOX Weather reported. An X flare is the most intense, and the number represents its strength.

The X9.0 is the strongest flare in Solar Cycle 25, which is uncommon, with a geomagnetic storm watch issued through Sunday.

A National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration spokesperson told Fox News Digital via email that the U.S. is in the grips of a solar maximum of Solar Cycle 25.

“Solar cycles are an on-average 11-year period whereby the Sun goes from a minimum of activity to a maximum and back to a minimum. This happens because of the magnetic turmoil created when the Sun flips its magnetic poles every 11 years or so,” said the spokesperson.

Stargazers in certain states may get the chance to see the aurora.

“It may be possible under the best circumstances for the more northern tier of the NorthEast to glimpse the aurora along the northern horizon well outside of city lights under clear skies.”

“Although, it is tough to say what the auroral extent actually could be during geomagnetic storms – generally the upper end of G3 [geomagnetic storm] level may make it possible for northern New York residents to see the aurora,” said the spokesperson.

Spirit tumbles to record low on report it’s exploring a bankruptcy filing. Here’s how it got here

Spirit Airlines shares tumbled to a record low on Friday after a report that it’s exploring Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The carrier faces a deadline this month to renegotiate more than $1 billion in debt.

A bankruptcy filing would mark a dramatic turn for the carrier with its iconic yellow planes that caters to budget-conscious travelers.

Profitable and punctual before the pandemic, Spirit’s no-frills service became a punchline for late-night comedians and a thorn in the side of big network carriers, enticing customers with double-digit fares and fees for everything else from seat assignments to carry-on luggage.

But big airlines soon successfully copied much of that business model with their lowest bare-bones fares. And a federal judge at the start of the year blocked Spirit’s planned acquisition by JetBlue Airways on antitrust grounds, halting what both carriers argued was a key avenue to compete with larger rivals. The scuttled deal left Spirit on its own to struggle with a Pratt & Whitney engine recall, shifting consumer travel patterns and higher costs.

After the JetBlue deal fell apart, Spirit said in January that it was looking at options to refinance its debt.

Spirit has $1.1 billion in loyalty-program backed debt that is due next September. It has until Oct. 21 to refinance or extend those secured notes.

The carrier has been losing money since 2020 and has reported disappointing results this year, including a nearly $193 million loss in the second quarter. The company has spent much of this year scrambling to cut costs, including furloughing pilots, slashing flights and deferring Airbus jetliner orders.

Spirit reduced its November and December capacity growth plans by about 17%, Barclays airline analyst Brandon Oglenski said earlier this week.

“As we’ve said, Spirit has been implementing a comprehensive plan to help us better compete, strengthen our balance sheet, and return to profitability,” CEO Ted Christie said in a note to staff on Friday. “We remain engaged in productive conversations with our bondholders, and we’re focused on securing the best outcome for the business as quickly as possible.”

A Spirit spokesman declined to comment on a the Wall Street Journal report that the carrier is considering a bankruptcy filing. Spirit adviser Perella Weinberg Partners declined to comment.

Spirit’s stock price dropped more than 24% Friday to a record low of $1.69. Shares are down nearly 90% so far this year.

Shares of Frontier Airlines, which originally planned to merge with fellow budget airline Spirit before JetBlue swooped in in 2022, surged 16% on Friday. Shares of other airlines also rallied.

This is Villaggio Italia, the traveling expo that will open its doors Saturday in Darwin, Australia, where the Amerigo Vespucci docked Thursday as part of the 24th stop of its world tour.
The initiative, strongly supported by the Minister of Defense Guido Crosetto, combines the traditional training activity of the Navy’s officer cadets and the promotion of Italy in the world.
During the three days of opening of the Village, meetings, debates and talks will be organized that will range from solidarity to research, passing through culture and cinema.
Every day the exhibition will also host a performance by the historic fanfare of the 8th Bersaglieri Regiment of the “Garibaldi” Brigade, which has already been a protagonist both in Darwin and in the city of Palmerstone, also in the Northern Territory.
Inside the Village it will be possible to immerse oneself in the beauty of Italy thanks to a multimedia exhibition that will present Italy through its craftsmanship, its culture, the faces, landscapes and panoramas that are symbols of the country.
As is the case in every world stage of the Vespucci Tour, the work “La David” by Jago will also be on display.
For visitors, who will have free access to the Darwin conference centre where the Village is located, there will also be the opportunity to visit the “Italia Geniale” (Genius Italy) exhibition created by the Ministry of Enterprise and Made in Italy and the Ministry of Defence in collaboration with the Adi Design Museum dedicated to Italian design.
During the opening days a conference is also scheduled on the “Spirito di Stella” initiative, the catamaran completely accessible to the disabled, which just like the Vespucci, has been touring the world since 1 July 2023.
The research work dedicated to marine ecosystems that the Vespucci ship is carrying out during its tour will be the focus of the workshop entitled “Vespucci meets the marine ecosystem” created together with the foreign ministry and the Italian embassy in Canberra.
The Villaggio Italia will offer visitors many contents dedicated to the protection of marine and coastal habitats, to “marine protected areas” on the protection of underwater environmental and artistic beauties, on the monitoring, prevention and fight against marine pollution.
As in the Los Angeles and Tokyo stages, the Ministry of Tourism and Enit will be protagonists with a series of events including the conference dedicated to the theme of “Return Tourism”.
The inauguration of the Village is scheduled for Saturday at 10:30 (2 am in Italy) in the presence of the Deputy Minister of Enterprise and Made in Italy Valentino Valentini, the Ambassador to Australia Paolo Crudele, the President of Difesa Servizi Gioacchino Alfano and the Commander of the Vespucci, Captain Giuseppe Lai.
