Eat fava beans, try apple cider vinegar and listen to pink noise — plus other wellness tips to know this week

0

Hello, Yahoo Life readers! My name is Kaitlin, and I’m sharing the best health and wellness tips to get you through the week.

We’re already halfway through the month of August and the election is right around the corner — take our new Yahoo Life survey to highlight your biggest health concerns on the ballot this year. If you’re heading to the movie theater to escape the heat this summer, check out how some readers are feeling about the difficult subject matter at the center of It Ends With Us before you pick your flick.

As always, take a look at the weather in your area and, if you’re so inclined, your horoscope. Then check out these tips below.

🪵 Should you try wood therapy?

To be clear, wood therapy doesn’t mean brushing up on your wood carving skills. Rather, it’s a form of massage that utilizes hand-held wooden tools. Practitioners say that it helps with lymphatic drainage (which relieves swelling), improving blood circulation and reducing stress — and some even claim it reduces the appearance of cellulite.

As appealing as wood therapy sounds, much research remains to be done to prove its effectiveness. And although the jury is still out on whether wood therapy helps with cellulite, massage therapy in general has been shown to have many benefits, including pain reduction and a stronger immune system. Curious to see how you feel after a wood therapy session? Enlist a professional who offers wooden tools as part of their practice, but let them know in advance if you have a condition like osteoporosis, which might make wood therapy too intense for you.

🫘 Get into fava beans

Fava beans may have been on Hannibal Lecter’s meal plan — and you may want to include them in your diet too. These beans, which have nearly 13 grams of protein per cup, contain a chemical called levodopa that can be converted into dopamine. That means that snacking on them could improve depression symptoms. More research needs to be done, but in the meantime, you can use fava beans as the main ingredient for a protein-rich dip: Just smash some up with olive oil, salt and pepper and spread on toast.

🚽 Don’t spend too much time on the toilet

If the bathroom is your favorite place to escape to, sorry, but you may be doing more damage to yourself than you realize. Sitting on the toilet for too long can put extra pressure on your lower rectum and anus, which might lead to hemorrhoids — swollen veins that can cause pain, itching and bleeding.

One tip to avoiding sitting too long? Leave your phone outside the bathroom. Endless scrolling can keep you sitting for long periods, leaving you vulnerable to these issues. And by leaving your phone outside the loo, you’ll also avoid your cell picking up nasty germs that you can pass along to other people.

👩‍💻 Protect your mental health on the job

A new study found that work stress is linked with a greater chance of developing an abnormal heart rhythm. What can you do about it? One expert told Yahoo Life that you can better manage the emotional and mental toll of your job by keeping a journal. Remind yourself about your personal wins (like a co-worker’s compliment) during times of stress.

✈️ Avoid the vacation blues

You planned your vacation months ago and were looking forward to having the best time — only to not feel the magic when you arrived. The vacation blues are a bummer, but there are ways to avoid this feeling in the future. Experts tell Yahoo Life that you can ensure a better mood on vacation by managing your physical well-being — which means getting enough sleep and eating nutritious foods, even if you’re running around to four museums a day.

If jet lag from time zone changes tends to mess up your sleep schedule (not to mention your gut, which can be thrown off by interruptions to your circadian rhythm), you can try adjusting your sleep schedule by a few hours before you leave for vacation. This can help you feel better rested when you arrive.

🥗 Try vinegar

One recent study found that daily vinegar consumption can help reduce symptoms of depression. While more research needs to be done to confirm the results, this is just more evidence of vinegar’s benefits. There’s one type you might want to start with: apple cider vinegar, which has been touted for helping to regulate blood sugar and improve cholesterol levels. You can use it in a simple homemade salad dressing to replace sugar-laden alternatives for an extra wellness win.

🎨 Get crafty

New research published in the journal Frontiers in Public Health found that people who enjoyed arts and crafts had a greater sense of happiness and life satisfaction. Previous studies have shown that making art activates reward pathways in our brain, which can enhance feelings of joy and accomplishment. You don’t need to be the next Picasso to get creative: Go to a “paint and sip” class with friends, or skip scrolling on your phone at night in favor of making beaded bracelets.

🔉 Listen to colorful noise

Researchers at Oregon Health & Science University found that white noise (think a consistent noise like radio static) and pink noise (gentle sounds like rainfall) could enhance focus and cognitive performance in children and young adults with ADHD. Researchers believe that these types of noise work for ADHD because they help mask distracting background sounds.

Whether or not you have ADHD, incorporating these sounds into your sleep routine may help you get a better night’s rest by creating a blanket of sound that blocks noise from the outside world. This means you may be less likely to wake up to something like an ambulance siren while you’re trying to sleep.

🦷 Reconsider oil pulling

There are so many health myths about oil, but one that you may want to pay attention to is the hype around oil pulling. While some people claim that sloshing oil in your mouth can help with your oral hygiene, experts warn that there’s little evidence to show any benefits — and, if you’re skipping out on flossing or brushing in favor of oil pulling, you’re likely doing more harm than good.

Ultimately, oil pulling won’t hurt you, as long as you also keep up with recommended practices for keeping your pearly whites healthy and clean. However, if you are going to oil pull, avoid spitting out the oil in the sink, a move that could clog your pipes.

Oropouche virus is spreading — and U.S. travelers have been affected. Here’s what to know about the insect-borne disease that has caused 2 deaths.

0

Oropouche virus disease is on the rise and spreading outside its typical bounds. Now, two young women are dead from the virus, with a third death being investigated.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued an advisory on Aug. 16 warning people traveling to areas known to have the Oropouche virus to avoid getting bit by midges and mosquitoes.

Here’s what you need to know about the virus and how to keep yourself safe.

Oropouche virus, which was named after the village in Trinidad where it was first identified in 1955, is a virus that causes symptoms like fever, headache, joint pain and rash. Less common symptoms include extreme light sensitivity, dizziness and eye pain.

The virus lives in animals like monkeys, birds, rodents and sloths, and is commonly spread to humans by infected midges (small flies) or mosquitoes. Outbreaks of the Oropouche virus primarily occur in tropical regions of South America, Central America and the Caribbean, with the most frequent cases reported in the Amazon region of Brazil and Peru.

Currently, there is no vaccine or medicine for the virus.

Oropouche virus is showing up in new areas beyond its usual Amazon basin home. The Pan American Health Organization created an epidemiological alert urging for increased prevention, surveillance and diagnosis of the virus.

In 2024, Brazil saw a huge jump in cases, and for the first time, Bolivia and Cuba have reported infections. Additionally, travelers infected with the virus have been identified in Germany, Italy and Spain, though no local transmission has occurred in Europe.

Cases have also been reported in the United States, with 11 travel-related cases this year.

This spread is possibly due to climate change, which causes mosquitoes to lose their habitats, thereby pushing these insects to bite humans more often.

Oropouche virus is typically not fatal, and there were no deaths associated with the virus dating back to its first identification — until 2024, when two otherwise healthy young women in Brazil reportedly died after contracting the disease. A third death is currently being investigated.

Oropouche virus shares similarities with other mosquito-borne viruses like dengue fever, which can make it challenging to differentiate and treat effectively. It’s possible that there were more deaths related to Oropouche virus in the past that were misattributed to dengue fever.

Recent data has shown it’s possible that Oropouche can lead to stillbirths and birth defects. On Aug. 16, the CDC recommended that pregnant people avoid non-essential travel to any areas with Oropouche virus outbreaks. This includes countries in South America and the Caribbean experiencing high rates of infection, such as Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, Colombia and Cuba.

If travel is unavoidable, pregnant people should take precautions to avoid insect bites — such as wearing repellant — and talk to their doctors about the risks, as well as monitor themselves for any symptoms.

The CDC recommends avoiding insect-borne illness by wearing insect repellent approved by the Environmental Protection Agency, wearing protective clothing and monitoring your household so that insects do not get inside. If you are spending time outdoors, avoid standing water and clutter (where bugs love to hang out). You can also cover children in strollers with nets to avoid contact.

0

KOTA KINABALU, Malaysia, Aug. 17, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — The Miss World Beauty With A Purpose Tour has concluded its impactful visit to Sabah, leaving an indelible mark on the community and significantly promoting Sabah tourism. This extraordinary initiative, led by Mrs Julia Morley CBE, CEO and Chairman of the Miss World Organization and Dr. Sean Wong, CEO of HyperLive Entertainment, and featuring the reigning Miss World 2024 Krystyna Pyszkova from the Czech Republic and Miss World Malaysia 2023 Saroop Roshi, has successfully highlighted the vital mission of Beauty With A Purpose while showcasing the natural beauty and cultural richness of Sabah.

Pogunon. This initiative was supported by generous contributions from Discover Sabah Digital, Media Works Solutions, Everrise Supermarket, and Bataras Sdn Bhd, with the H3ROS 4×4 Club Sabah ensuring timely delivery of aid. Additionally, the Miss World Malaysia Organization has pledged to raise RM 30,000 to support the affected families.

The Miss World team’s visit to the Sabah Autism Society further emphasized their dedication to supporting children with healthcare needs. They also visited the Palliative Care Association. Mrs Morley generously donated US$10,000 and US$20,000 to the Sabah Autism Society and Palliative Care Association respectively.

Facilitated and arranged by philanthropist Datuk Susan Chang, the Miss World team visited Hospital Wanita dan Kanak-kanak Likas, delivering gifts to 45 children suffering from cancer and thalassemia, and celebrated their birthdays, bringing smiles and hope to these young warriors. To support the oncology department, the team pledged a donation of RM 10,000 per year for the next three years.

Among these children, 10 had the special opportunity to attend a high tea session at the Sabah State Palace, hosted by the esteemed Yang Amat Berbahagia Toh Puan Datuk Seri Panglima Hajah Norlidah Binti Tan Sri R.M Jasni, The Consort of The Head Of State Of Sabah and Adviser to Nur Jauhar Foundation, and Brig Gen Datuk Haji Al Hambra Tun Juhar, Deputy Speaker of the State Legislative House and Chairman of Nur Jauhar Foundation. NTUC LHUB and NATAS will co-develop the Certified Travel Professional (CTP) programme, a first-of-its-kind certification programme in Singapore’s travel sector under a three-year strategic partnership. The CTP programme is designed to help new entrants to the travel sector acquire essential skills to widen job opportunities, as well as seasoned professionals by equipping them with knowledge and skills necessary to thrive in a dynamic and competitive market.

This initiative aligns with one of NATAS’ strategies to enhance the overall quality and professionalism of the travel sector in Singapore, by fostering innovation and encouraging the creation of new roles and expansion of existing roles tailored to the needs of the emerging market. It also builds on NTUC LHUB’s 3-year partnership with the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) to co-develop courses in emerging areas such as sustainability, technological enablers, and service excellence. This partnership was announced earlier in May this year at the Tourism Industry Conference.

Structured Training Programme for Diverse Group of Travel Professionals
The CTP programme is catered to a diverse group of professionals, including aspiring travel consultants, experienced agents seeking certification, career switchers, as well as those looking to specialise in niche areas such as corporate travel management or eco-tourism. The CTP programme features a structured curriculum that includes a blend of core modules, general electives, as well as specialised electives, with key areas of focus in Sales and Marketing Strategies, Sustainability, Emerging Technology, Wellness and Service Experience Excellence.

To attain the CTP Certification, learners will be required to take three modules, starting with a mandatory core module on effective strategies for travel professionals, followed by one elective module covering topics ranging from service excellence, sustainability to technology. Subsequently, learners can choose a specialised elective module focusing on either corporate travel or leisure travel track. Learners who successfully completed the three modules will be conferred Certified Travel Professional – Corporate Travel, Leisure Travel, or Corporate and Leisure Travel, depending on the specialised elective they choose. Recertification is required 18 months following the date of completion of the CTP programme, and learners will need to complete any two elective modules to maintain their certification.

To encourage effective training facilitation and to promote networking among travel professionals, the modules will be conducted by a panel of professionals with diverse and extensive experience in the travel sector, and delivered physically. The pilot run for the programme will take place in March 2025 starting with an intake of 10 learners. NTUC LHUB will be the programme manager for the modules, while the certification will be issued by NATAS.

Mr. Jeremy Ong, CEO of NTUC LearningHub, said, “NTUC LearningHub is honoured to lead the way in providing training for Singapore’s tourism sector in emerging and in-demand skills, reflecting our strong commitment to working alongside industry leaders, government bodies, and the Labour Movement. This partnership with NATAS is well-aligned with our goal to develop programmes aimed at elevating the professionalism of the tourism workforce in the evolving economy. Through these efforts, we aspire to help Singapore become a premier tourism destination supported by a workforce that continues to innovate and revitalise itself.”

Mr. Steven Ler, President of NATAS, said, “The Certified Travel Professional (CTP) programme represents a significant milestone for the travel sector in Singapore, as it heralds a new era of excellence and resilience for the industry. Through our collaboration with NTUC LearningHub, NATAS is confident that the CTP programme will not only elevate the standards of service and professionalism within the travel industry, but also support the continuous growth and innovation that is demanded to position Singapore as a leading global travel destination.”
