U.S. track star Noah Lyles takes bronze in 200-meter, says he tested positive for Covid

Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo, US’ Kenneth Bednarek and US’ Noah Lyles cross the finish line to finish first, second and third respectively in the men’s 200m final of the athletics event at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games at Stade de France in Saint-Denis, north of Paris, on August 8, 2024.

PARIS — Two days after Noah Lyles said he tested positive for Covid, the American sprinter finished third in the 200-meter final at the Paris Olympics, unable to chase down gold medalist Letsile Tebogo of Botswana.

Lyles ran 19.70 for bronze, behind Tebogo’s 19.46, which earned the first gold medal in Botswana’s history. American Kenny Bednarek earned silver in 19.62.

Following his positive test, Lyles said he moved into a hotel away from the Olympic Village to quarantine himself and arrived for warmups before Wednesday’s semifinal with a mask on. He said he never considered not competing in Thursday’s final and intentionally did not disclose information about his diagnosis.

“You never want to tell your competitors you’re sick,” he said. “Why would you give them an edge over you?”

Lyles, 27, appeared his usual energetic self when he was introduced before the final, jumping and sprinting down the track before getting into his blocks as a sold-out crowd inside Stade de France grew silent. Lyles was running from behind right from the start, looking little like the sprinter who had won 26 consecutive races dating to 2021 until he finished second in Wednesday’s semifinal — also to Tebogo — and had been 38-5 all-time against the seven other sprinters in Thursday’s final.

At the finish line Lyles collapsed, then gingerly stood while asking for water and sitting back down on the track. He was put into a wheelchair and carted off underneath the stadium. It was a stark contrast to Sunday night, when Lyles won the first Olympic gold medal of his career by winning the 100-meters by five-thousandths of a second and afterward guaranteed that he would win the 200 meters, as well.

Testing positive for COVID “definitely affected my performance,” Lyles said. “But I mean, to be honest, I’m more proud of myself than anything coming out and get the bronze medal with COVID in three days. It’s been a wild Olympics.”

In a statement, USA Track & Field said that it and the U.S. Olympic committee had adhered to guidelines set by the Centers for Disease Control and the International Olympic Committee to “prioritize his health, the wellbeing of our team, and the safety of fellow competitors.”

“Our primary commitment is to ensure the safety of Team USA athletes while upholding their right to compete. After a thorough medical evaluation, Noah chose to compete tonight. We respect his decision and will continue to monitor his condition closely.”

Lyles was attempting to become the first man to sweep both sprints at an Olympics since Jamaica’s Usain Bolt in 2016, and the first from the U.S. since Carl Lewis 40 years ago. Earning bronze also ends Lyles’s much-discussed ambition of becoming the first track athlete to win four gold medals at a single Olympics since 1984.

He said he would let USA Track & Field decide whether he should run on the U.S. 4×100-meter relay team that qualified for Friday’s final with the fastest time in preliminaries.

Boeing’s new outsider CEO Ortberg takes the helm, this time from the factory floor

Aerospace veteran Robert “Kelly” Ortberg becomes Boeing‘s new CEO on Thursday with a singular mission: restoring the reputation of a U.S. manufacturing icon.

That enormous goal will involve thousands of daily decisions that will determine whether Boeing can earn back the trust of regulators, airlines and the public; end persistent production defects; deliver aircraft on time and consistently to customers large and small; and stop burning cash.

That cash burn is running about $8 billion so far this year and counting. Meanwhile, Boeing shares are down some 37% so far in 2024, as of Wednesday.

Ortberg’s Day 1 activity is walking the floor of Boeing’s factory in Renton, Washington, where it builds its bestselling but problematic 737 Max. He plans to talk with employees and review safety and quality plans, with similar visits ahead at other Boeing plants.

“I can’t tell you how proud and excited I am to be a member of the Boeing team,” he said in a note to staff on Thursday. “While we clearly have a lot of work to do in restoring trust, I’m confident that working together, we will return the company to be the industry leader we all expect.”

Analysts and industry insiders are cautiously upbeat, painting the 64-year-old Ortberg — a more than three-decade veteran of the industry who spent years atop commercial and defense supplier Rockwell Collins after working up the ranks there — as a good listener with an engineering background (he has a mechanical engineering degree). Perhaps most importantly, he is a Boeing outsider.

“This guy has a fantastic reputation and level of experience in the industry,” said Richard Aboulafia, managing director at AeroDynamic Advisory. “He has a reputation for listening and for letting people push back.”

Trouble across businesses

Those skills will be key as Boeing tries to stabilize its production and eliminate manufacturing flaws.

Boeing’s top safety executive for commercial aerospace told a National Transportation Safety Board hearing earlier this week that the company is working on a design fix so the near-catastrophic door plug blowout it faced at the beginning of the year never happens again.

The hearing was part of the NTSB’s probe of the midair blowout of a door plug from a packed, monthsold Boeing 737 Max 9 as it climbed out of Portland, Oregon. While no one was seriously injured in the accident, it put Boeing back into crisis mode just as it was trying to move on from two fatal crashes of its bestselling 737 Max planes in 2018 and 2019.

Worker testimony at the NTSB hearing also showed manufacturing pressure and frequent fixes on planes, putting a spotlight on Boeing’s factories.

“I will be transparent with you every step of the way, sharing news on progress as well as where we must do things better,” Ortberg said in the memo. He vowed to share reports to staff, “giving you timely updates of what I’m seeing and hearing on the ground from our teammates and our stakeholders.”

Boeing last month agreed to plead guilty to defrauding the U.S. government during the Max certification, a deal that will require an independent corporate monitor at the company for three years.

But Ortberg will have to address issues not only in the commercial jet business, including the delayed certification of new 737 and 777 models, but also in its defense unit.

That segment of the business is facing issues with two 747s that will serve as the next Air Force One aircraft but are years behind schedule. Meanwhile, Boeing’s misfiring Starliner capsule, which launched in early June, has NASA debating whether to use SpaceX instead to bring astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams back from the International Space Station.

And on Thursday, NASA’s Inspector General released an audit of the agency’s Space Launch System rocket program, which is being built for moon missions and counts Boeing as a leading contractor. The NASA watchdog slammed Boeing for its “ineffective quality management and inexperienced workforce, continued cost increases and schedule delays, and the delayed establishment of a cost and schedule baseline.”

A decision is also looming over whether to launch a new aircraft as Boeing loses ground to rival Airbus.

The first 100 days of Ortberg’s time as CEO will be crucial, said Bank of America aerospace analyst Ron Epstein.

“The decisions made early in his tenure will have generational impacts on the company,” he said in a note Monday.

Ortberg and his team will need to ensure Boeing’s workforce is trained, with thousands of new workers in factories after more experienced staff members took buyouts or were laid off in the pandemic. A union representing some 30,000 Boeing factory workers in Washington state and Oregon is seeking more than 40% raises and, last month, members authorized a strike if a deal isn’t reached this September.

“The principles of safety and quality should be equally important as the manufacturing rates,” Jon Holden, local president of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, said in a statement last week. “This potential collaboration with the new CEO could be a prime opportunity for Boeing to prove its dedication to its workforce and acknowledge the exceptional manufacturing capability and capacity of skilled IAM Members on the shop floor.”

Why Boeing wants to buy back Spirit AeroSystems

Last week, alongside another quarterly loss, Boeing announced Ortberg would succeed Dave Calhoun, who had said in March he would step down by year’s end.

That was part of a larger executive shake-up after the door plug blowout. Calhoun himself took over a Boeing in crisis in early 2020, replacing Dennis Muilenburg, who was ousted for his handling of the two Max crashes.

While Boeing is still based in Arlington, Virginia — where it announced it would move its headquarters in 2022 from Chicago — Ortberg will be based in the Seattle area, giving him a close eye on where the majority of Boeing’s commercial jetliner production is based.

“In speaking with our customers and industry partners leading up to today, I can tell you that without exception, everyone wants us to succeed,” Otberg said in his Day 1 note to employees. “In many cases, they NEED us to succeed. This is a great foundation for us to build upon.”

Read more CNBC airline news

Getting off on the right foot with customers and the hundreds of suppliers that are struggling from pandemic-demand whiplash is important for Ortberg and the company. Boeing’s relationships with its bread-and-butter customers has suffered recently, and its leadership shake-up came after airline CEOs sought a meeting with the company’s board as delays of aircraft piled up in the wake of the door plug blowout.

Southwest Airlines is among Boeing’s biggest customers and, like other carriers, has scaled back its growth plans, citing delivery delays of new, more fuel-efficient jets from Boeing. The airline’s CEO hinted at the big feat Ortberg has ahead of him.

“We look forward to working with Kelly Ortberg in his efforts to return Boeing to its place as the leading American aerospace company,” CEO Bob Jordan said in a written statement. “A strong Boeing is great for Southwest Airlines and it’s great for our industry.”

Innovative Anti-Nausea Smartwatch EmeTerm® Smart Set to Launch on Indiegogo

0

VANCOUVER, BC, Aug. 8, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — EmeTerm® Smart uses patented hybrid technology to seamlessly integrate the functionality of a smartwatch with that of an anti-nausea wristband, ensuring a carefree and healthy life for all. EmeTerm® Smart is launching on Indiegogo as the world’s first anti-nausea smart watch.

EmeTerm® Smart’s story is one of heartfelt innovation. In 2010, the founder’s wife experienced severe morning sickness during her pregnancy. Frustrated by the lack of effective, drug-free solutions, he was inspired to create a device that could help not only his wife but also countless others suffering from nausea. Driven by love and determination, he assembled a team of passionate and experienced professionals who shared his vision and founded WAT Medical, a Canadian medical technology company, in 2015.

Since its establishment, WAT Medical has dedicated years to developing high-precision, wearable medical devices to prevent debilitating conditions like nausea, migraines, and obesity. Co-founder, Peter Ji, who holds a Doctorate in Optometry from the University of California, Berkeley, states that the entire team firmly believes in the integration of advanced technology and patient-centered care to make a positive impact on the global medical landscape. In alignment with this vision, WAT Medical actively fulfills its social responsibilities by contributing to esteemed organizations such as M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, the Canadian Red Cross, and Peace Arch Hospital. Furthermore, WAT Medical supports vulnerable groups, including veterans and patients with rare conditions such as EDS and HDS, through various charitable initiatives.

Today, WAT Medical is proud to introduce a new smart device that exceeds expectations and transforms lives. The EmeTerm® Smart anti-nausea wristband utilizes transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) to provide a drug-free, side-effect-free solution for all types of nausea and vomiting. FDA-approved and boasting a success rate of up to 85%, EmeTerm® Smart effectively combats nausea in a safe and natural manner.[1]

Additionally, a study published in the British Journal of Anesthesia (BJA) confirms that wearable TENS wristbands can effectively prevent postoperative nausea and vomiting. On February 27, 2023, Ohio State University further validated its efficacy through testing and analysis of both subjective patient responses and objective physiological data.

The new EmeTerm® Smart model also stands out with its smart features. Users can adjust the electrical stimulation level via a touch-sensitive screen with a clear interface. Moreover, it offers timekeeping and step counting to help users better understand and improve their health. With an IP67 waterproof rating, EmeTerm® Smart can stay submerged in 1-meter-deep water for 30 minutes and is completely protected from dust, ensuring it can be used in various situations.

EmeTerm® Smart will be released via Indiegogo in August 2024. The MSRP is $299, with early backers enjoying up to 39% off. Visit the EmeTerm® Smart’s Indiegogo page to learn more:Indiegogo page.

LILIN V1W Dual-LED Camera – AI Technology Enhancing Intelligent Surveillance

0

TAIPEI, Aug. 8, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — How can full-color surveillance images be achieved at night?

Smartly switch color modes based on scene requirements.
Smartly switch color modes based on scene requirements.

LILIN, a leading provider of AI surveillance solutions, has developed a dual-LED night vision camera, combining advanced AI technology with a dual LED system to deliver ideal night-time image quality for surveillance sites.

This revolutionary camera employs a smart approach to present bright, noise-free color images in the dark. Under normal conditions, the camera activates infrared (IR) LEDs to record black-and-white images, conserving power and bandwidth. However, when certain conditions are met, the camera automatically switches to white light LEDs (Warm Light) to capture more detailed color images.

For instance, the camera can be set to display black-and-white images when there are no anomalies in the frame, and switch to color images when motion is detected. The illuminated white LEDs not only provide additional lighting for personnel but also act as a deterrent, signaling “area under surveillance” to passersby and discouraging misconduct.

Core Technology: Dual-Light Source System

One of the core technologies of this camera is the dual-LED system. The IR light provides black-and-white images suitable for energy-saving needs, while the white light presents color images with more detail and higher quality. This design ensures optimal image quality in any environment, significantly saving resources and enhancing surveillance efficiency. This means that whether in large enterprises or private homes, an economical and efficient surveillance solution can be achieved without sacrificing image quality.

AI-Driven Features

The camera’s built-in AI capabilities support behavior and object recognition, automatically triggering and recording events. Users can freely switch LED operation modes via the web interface or allow the camera to make automatic judgments, achieving more flexible image recording.

The LILIN V1W dual-LED camera is particularly suitable for night-time or low-light scenarios, including warehouses and storage rooms, residential or office environments, and outdoor areas.

Warehouses and Storage Rooms:

These places are usually not suitable for prolonged lighting, both for energy conservation and to prevent item deterioration.

Residential or Office Environments:

Why leave the lights on when no one is home or the office is closed? Yet, surveillance protection should not be compromised.

Outdoor Areas:

With weaker outdoor night lighting, the robust design of the dual-light source camera can withstand sun and rain, ensuring 24/7 surveillance.

Various Models to Meet Different Surveillance Needs

To meet diverse surveillance needs, LILIN offers multiple camera models. The bullet camera V1W9552X3 with a 3x optical zoom lens is suitable for deeper spaces, while the dome camera V1W4452E2 with a fixed-focus lens is ideal for smaller indoor areas, providing excellent image quality. Additionally, the video management software NAV5.0 utilizes AI technology to analyze images and manage related events in the central control center. Through intelligent search methods, administrators can easily browse images and quickly find key footage.

The LILIN V1W dual-light source color night vision camera is one of the latest in LILIN’s AI product line. For more exciting applications, please refer to: https://lilin.vip/v1wen

BANGKOK, Aug. 8, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — Standard International continues its global expansion with the newest brand to its growing portfolio — The StandardX, Melbourne — debuting on August 8, marking a vibrant new chapter in Fitzroy.

Nestled in Fitzroy, one of Australia’s most eclectic neighborhoods, the city was once a thriving hub of creativity in the 1970s and 1980s that boasted record shops, sticky-carpeted punk clubs and legendary writers’ haunts. Though the neighborhood has evolved, its essence as a cherished gem endures, making it the perfect locale as the inaugural location of The StandardX brand.

Though the neighborhood has evolved, its essence as a cherished gem endures, making it the perfect locale as the inaugural location of The StandardX brand.

The StandardX boldly selects locations thrumming with cultural pulses to welcome guests into the creative energy of experimental art, music and fashion scenes. The brand is teeming with The Standard’s distinct cultural authority that pays homage to the debauched glamour and brazen spirit from its Hollywood counterpart.

Designed to check in and check out the city, The StandardX takes inspiration from Fitzroy’s post-punk Little Band scene of yesteryear to today’s music venues, street art and cafés.

In keeping with its Standard DNA, style rules the day at The StandardX, with interiors led by Melbourne-based firm, Hecker Guthrie, in tandem with Standard International’s in-house design team. Upon entering the lobby through a familiar bold revolving door, the ground floor opens to an airy elevated loft with a fireplace that beckons guests to linger longer. Columns wrapped in macrame by local artist Sarah Parkes of Smalltown and paintings from Dane Lovett are complemented by custom furniture and antique pieces. Cheeky and charming in equal measure, each of the 125 rooms are designed with a contemporary aesthetic with comforts guests know and love from The Standard brand. Across eight floors, options range from an intimate Cozy King to a spacious Suite Spot with unobstructed views of Fitzroy and the city skyline. Each guestroom is cocooned in hues of blue and white while a plush bed sits focally. Nearby, a millwork ledge doubles as a writing corner and open closet. Melbourne’s influence of local talent is unmistakable, with work from artists such as Jane Sinclair.

A trifecta of distinct food and beverage concepts will leave a lasting impression on guests and locals alike. All have been masterfully led by Executive Chef Justin Dingle-Garciyya, who developed his skills in Michelin-starred kitchens throughout Europe. On the ground floor sits BANG, an all-day Thai restaurant that draws influence from Asian flavours to redefine street food. Here, Chef Dingle-Garciyya showcases a sophisticated fusion of culture and gastronomy, where traditional Thai recipes are transformed using produce sourced from Melbourne and Victoria.

Perched atop the hotel is The Roof, a secret hideaway accessible exclusively to hotel guests with panoramic views of Fitzroy and Melbourne, offering a dining experience inspired by the melodic flavours of Mercado Medellin. Located in the lobby, The Box is a retail concept that includes everyday essentials, lifestyle items, as well as snacks and beverages to be enjoyed on-the-go or in room.

This $9 foot cream with 62,000+ five-star fans revitalizes cracked heels

0

Dry skin has always been a problem for me, and after years of dealing with parched patches that could seemingly never be quenched, I now have an encyclopedic knowledge of which moisturizers actually work. And as the self-dubbed “Moisturization Queen,” I’m here to tell you why you absolutely need O’Keeffe’s Healthy Feet Foot Cream, which is now on sale at Amazon for a mere $9 a jar.

Amazon

This foot cream heals, relieves and repairs, bringing your tootsies back to summer-smooth with every use.

$9 at Amazon

Why is it a good deal? 💰

I have spent loads of money trying moisturizers, heel balms, pumice stones and even special pedicure treatments to keep my dry feet soft and smooth, but none actually helped until I found O’Keeffe’s Healthy Feet Foot Cream, currently on sale at Amazon for $9. Considering the cost of a quality callus-busting pedicure can reach upwards of $50 nowadays, less than $10 is a total steal.

Why do I need this? 🤔

My feet are dry year-round, to the point that my heels are cracked enough to snag at my bed sheets — a pretty gross issue lots of people deal with, and often a major struggle to reverse. But O’Keeffe’s Healthy Feet Foot Cream, much like its hand cream, is a game-changer. Our senior beauty editor agrees: “This brand’s formula is somewhat legendary for its heavy-duty hydration of even the driest feet,” she wrote in a roundup of the best foot care products in the game.

The main difference between O’Keeffe’s and other foot moisturizers is its increased concentration of allantoin, an ingredient that’s particularly effective at penetrating the thicker skin of your feet to lock in moisture. This, combined with glycerin, allows the cream to create a protective layer around your dogs, boosting moisture and helping to retain that moisture.

To test it, I applied the foot cream to my heels and the balls of my feet before bed, then put on a pair of socks to help keep the cream from rubbing off while I slept. (O’Keeffe’s recommends exfoliating your skin before applying the cream, but I skipped that step and still found it worked.) After a few nights, the cracks on my feet had visibly diminished, and the dryness was all but gone. As I continued to use it, the cracks disappeared too.

jar of foot cream

I’ve tried heel balms, pumice stones and special pedicures, but nothing works as well as this $9 cream. (Amazon)

What reviewers say 💬

I’m not the only one who raves about O’Keeffe’s — more than 62,000(!) five-star reviewers at Amazon know this cream to be the miracle-in-a-jar that it is.

Pros 👍

“OK, y’all, this stuff is amazing,” one reviewer said. “My daughter hates wearing anything on her feet … her little feet were all red and cracked. This stuff is mind-blowing. Two, just two, applications was all it took to get my little one’s feet looking healthy again!”

Another user gushed, “I wish with all my heart I had taken a before and after photo of my feet!! One foot (not so much the other) was horrific. I’d get the worst itching, making me miserable for days on end. The foot was hideous, with peeling, raw, red skin in every spot that wasn’t callused and hard. … I tried this on a whim and it’s changed my life! I can wear sandals now without being embarrassed… After two days, the itching was lessened. After a week, my feet visibly started to heal. … They are actually soft and pretty again!!”

One five-star fan admitted, “I really didn’t have my hopes up too high for this cream, so I didn’t think about taking a picture. Too bad, because my feet are night and day. … I had this callus spot where the back of my foot rubs against my shoes, and it’s practically gone now. You don’t even see it anymore. I’m really impressed, like wow impressed.”

“My feet have always had disgusting dry and cracked heels,” confessed another customer. “I’ve tried wearing socks with lotion before and had zero results. I read about this stuff and was skeptical, but thought I would try it. Oh my. Just a miracle! I rub my heel in the jar and just add a thin coat of this stuff every night and it’s like I had a fresh pedicure. Better, really, because this doesn’t end! I don’t know what witchcraft this is, but WOW!”

Cons 👎

Some reviewers cautioned that the cream must be used routinely to achieve the best results: “This is a great product if you use it consistently. Otherwise, it’s just like anything else — it’s going to moisturize, but it’s not going to [heal] your skin,” noted a user.

Another reviewer critiqued, “Leaves a very greasy feeling to feet. I apply at night when going to bed, otherwise it feels nasty in my socks,” adding, however, “Does seem to be helping with dry feet, though.”

Amazon

The cream creates a protective layer on the skin’s surface to help boost moisture levels and prevent further moisture loss.

$9 at Amazon

And if you want to feel good from your hands to your feet, O’Keeffe’s hand cream is currently only $8.

Amazon

The concentrated cream doesn’t only help parched and cracked skin; it heals and repairs extreme dryness that comes with various conditions or manual jobs at any time of the year.

$8 at Amazon

“I love this stuff! I am a fireman and constantly wash my hands,” raved a reviewer. “Especially in the winter the skin around my nail beds and fingertips will crack and bleed. It is really painful and gross! This stuff is a miracle worker. It feels waxy like it’s locking in the moisture. I put it on at night and can still tell it’s on in the morning. I am a regular buyer/user of this now, and couldn’t be happier!”

If you have Amazon Prime, you’ll get free shipping, of course. Not yet a member? No problem. You can sign up for your free 30-day trial here. (And by the way, those without Prime still get free shipping on orders of $35 or more.)

The reviews quoted above reflect the most recent versions at the time of publication.

GSK’s Jemperli (dostarlimab) plus chemotherapy approved in Singapore as the first frontline immuno-oncology treatment for dMMR/MSI-H primary advanced or recurrent endometrial cancer

0
  • Jemperli in combination with chemotherapy is the first immuno-oncology treatment approved in the frontline setting for this patient population in Singapore.[1,2]
  • Latest published local registry reported endometrial cancer as the fourth most common cancer and had the ninth highest cancer mortality rate among females in the country.[3]
  • An estimated 20-29% of all endometrial cancers globally are dMMR/MSI-H.[4]
  • Chemotherapy used alone has been the current standard of care for primary advanced or recurrent endometrial cancer, and many patients eventually experience disease progression.[5]

SINGAPORE, Aug. 7, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — GSK Singapore today announced that the Singapore Health Sciences Authority (HSA) has approved a new indication for Jemperli (dostarlimab), which may now be used in combination with carboplatin and paclitaxel, followed by Jemperli as a single agent for the treatment of adult patients with primary advanced or recurrent endometrial cancer that is mismatch repair deficient (dMMR) or microsatellite instability-high (MSI-H).[1]

With this approval, Jemperli is now indicated earlier in treatment, in combination with chemotherapy, for patients with dMMR/MSI-H primary advanced or recurrent endometrial cancer. Jemperli has earlier received approval from Singapore HSA as a monotherapy in adult patients with dMMR recurrent or advanced endometrial cancer that has progressed on or following a prior platinum-containing regimen in any setting and are not candidates for curative surgery or radiation.[1]

Latest Singapore Cancer Registry, from 2017-2021, reported endometrial cancer as the fourth most common and had the ninth highest cancer mortality rate among females in the country, with 3,133 new cases diagnosed during the period.[3] Approximately 15-20% of endometrial cancer patients globally and 28% in Singapore were at advanced disease stage at the time of diagnosis.[3,4] An estimated 20-29% of all endometrial cancers globally are dMMR/MSI-H.[4] Chemotherapy used alone has been the current standard of care for primary advanced or recurrent endometrial cancer, and many patients eventually experience disease progression.[5]

Dr. Stephanie Cinthu Stephen Ambrose, GSK Singapore Medical Director, said: “Singapore’s expanded regulatory approval of Jemperli redefines the treatment landscape for patients with dMMR/MSI-H primary advanced or recurrent endometrial cancer in Singapore. Until now, chemotherapy alone has been the standard of care with many patients experiencing disease progression. In GSK’s RUBY trial, Jemperli plus chemotherapy demonstrated a 72% reduction in the risk of disease progression or death versus chemotherapy in this patient population, providing a statistically significant and clinically meaningful benefit. These results underscore the potential for Jemperli to transform cancer treatment as a backbone immuno-oncology therapy.”

Dr. John Chia of Curie Oncology, Singapore, said: “Metastatic endometrial cancer is an aggressive disease with poor outcomes, and doctors sometimes struggle with limited effective treatment options. The results of the RUBY trial represent a clinical breakthrough in decades for dMMR/MSH-I endometrial cancer (or commonly known as uterine cancer). With this new approved treatment combination, many patients with primary advanced or recurrent dMMR endometrial cancer in Singapore will now have an opportunity for potential complete remission, with maximal benefit when given early in the treatment.”

GSK’s submission to the Singapore’s regulatory body included interim analysis results from Part 1 of the RUBY/ENGOT-EN6/GOG3031/NSGO Phase III trial, which reflect a robust median duration of follow-up of ≥ 25 months. The trial met the primary endpoint of investigator-assessed progression-free survival (PFS), demonstrating a statistically significant and clinically meaningful benefit in patients treated with Jemperli plus carboplatin and paclitaxel in the dMMR/MSI-H population. In the dMMR/MSI-H population, a 72% reduction in the risk of disease progression or death was observed.[1]

The safety and tolerability profile for Jemperli plus carboplatin and paclitaxel was generally consistent with the known safety profiles of the individual agents. The most common treatment-emergent adverse events (≥ 20%) in patients receiving Jemperli plus chemotherapy were rash, diarrhoea, hypothyroidism, and hypertension.[1]

About endometrial cancer

Endometrial cancer is one of the most common gynaecologic cancers in developed countries.[3] According to latest Singapore Cancer Registry data, from 2017-2021, endometrial cancer was the fourth most common cancer and had the ninth highest cancer mortality rate among females.[3] There are about 3,133 new cases of endometrial cancer diagnosed between the 2017 – 2021.[3] Approximately 15-20% of endometrial cancer patients globally and 28% in Singapore were at advanced disease stage at the time of diagnosis.[3,4] An estimated 20-29% of all endometrial cancers globally are dMMR/MSI-H.[4] Chemotherapy used alone has been the current standard of care for primary advanced or recurrent endometrial cancer, and many patients eventually experience disease progression.[5]

About RUBY

RUBY is a two-part global, randomised, double-blind, multicentre phase III trial of patients with primary advanced or recurrent endometrial cancer. Part 1 is evaluating dostarlimab plus carboplatin-paclitaxel followed by dostarlimab versus carboplatin-paclitaxel plus placebo followed by placebo. Part 2 is evaluating dostarlimab plus carboplatin- paclitaxel followed by dostarlimab plus niraparib versus placebo plus carboplatin-paclitaxel followed by placebo.

The dual-primary endpoints in Part 1 are investigator-assessed PFS based on the Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumours v1.1 and OS. The statistical analysis plan included pre-specified analyses of PFS in the dMMR/MSI- H and ITT populations and OS in the overall population. Pre-specified exploratory analyses of PFS in the mismatch repair proficient (MMRp)/microsatellite stable (MSS) population and OS in the dMMR/MSI-H populations were also performed. RUBY Part 1 included a broad population, including histologies often excluded from clinical trials and had approximately 10% of patients with carcinosarcoma and 20% with serous carcinoma. In Part 2, the primary endpoint is investigator-assessed PFS. Secondary endpoints in Part 1 and Part 2 include PFS per blinded independent central review, overall response rate, duration of response, disease control rate, patient-reported outcomes, and safety and tolerability.

About Jemperli (dostarlimab)

Jemperli is a programmed death receptor-1 (PD-1)-blocking antibody that binds to the PD-1 receptor and blocks its interaction with the PD-1 ligands PD-L1 and PD-L2.[6] In Singapore, Jemperli is indicated in combination with carboplatin and paclitaxel, followed by Jemperli as a single agent for the treatment of adult patients with primary advanced or recurrent endometrial cancer that is mismatch repair deficient (dMMR, or microsatellite instability-high (MSI-H), and as a single agent for adult patients with mismatch repair-deficient (dMMR) recurrent or advanced endometrial cancer, that has progressed on or following a prior platinum-containing regimen in any setting and are not candidates for curative surgery or radiation.

Jemperli was discovered by AnaptysBio, Inc. and licensed to TESARO, Inc., under a collaboration and exclusive license agreement signed in March 2014.

Electric bike and scooter injuries are surging. Riders renting without helmets partly to blame.

0

The last few years has seen a huge rise in popularity of electric bicycles and scooters. Many major cities in the U.S. now have a rideshare program for e-bikes, allowing people to catch a ride on a whim, and sales of these devices increased 40% in 2022 alone. However, that trend has led to a spike in injuries.

New research published in JAMA Network Open studied medical database information from 86,623 people from 2017 to 2022 and found that electric bicycle injuries increased by nearly 100% and electric scooter injuries increased by more than 45% annually.

“Injured electric vehicle users were older and less commonly helmeted than those injured from conventional vehicles,” the researchers wrote in the study. They also noted that the findings “suggest that safer riding infrastructure and rider practices are important to curtail the rise of micromobility injuries.” (“Micromobility” refers to e-bikes and scooters.)

Doctors aren’t surprised by the findings and say these numbers are likely an undercount. “I think the real numbers are much worse,” Dr. Ali Jamehdor, medical director of the Weingart Foundation Emergency Department at Providence Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, Calif., tells Yahoo Life.

Dr. Michael Levine, an emergency medicine physician at UCLA Health, agrees. “I definitely see these injuries a lot — on a daily basis,” he tells Yahoo Life. “Usually people are scooting around, hit a bump and fall, or a car stops in front of them and they don’t see it.”

Doctors and public health experts have recommended wearing a helmet when riding non-electric bikes for years, and emergency room physicians who treat these injuries stress that it’s even more important on an electric bike. “These are very similar to a motorcycle,” Jamehdor says. “Most people would not think of getting on a motorcycle without a helmet.”

The big problem with these bikes is their power, Dr. Erin Muckey, associate professor of emergency medicine at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, tells Yahoo Life. “Electric bikes and scooters can accelerate more quickly, travel at higher speeds and are heavier than conventional bikes and scooters, which increase the risk of injury during an accident,” she says. Most people driving them may not be as well-versed in how to operate the machines, particularly if they rent them, Jamehdor says.

Many of these injured riders are also older and physically inactive, and some of the accidents may involve drugs and alcohol, Dr. Nicholas Kman, an emergency medicine physician at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, tells Yahoo Life. For older adults who are on medications like blood thinners, their injuries could be even worse, he says.

“We see many head and facial — dental — injuries as these patients hit a curb, sidewalk or other hard surface,” Kman says. “Further, many of these happen in a crowded urban setting where a car may strike an e-bike or scooter.”

Levine says he’s seen a range of injuries, from cuts and lacerations to broken bones. “Occasionally we’ll see really severe head injuries from falling off these bikes and scooters,” he says.

The combination of speed and a potential fall risk is scary, Jamehdor says. “Trauma to the head can cause life-altering or life-ending injuries,” he says. “It can take a split second for that fall to occur.”

Most people who rent these bikes don’t have a helmet already on them — and they’re not available for users when they rent the bike, Levine points out. “These people don’t necessarily walk around with a helmet all day,” he says. “Because the helmets are not offered, people think these bikes are safe.”

Jamehdor points out that nearly all of the companies that make these bikes say that riders should use a helmet, “but the bikes are positioned all over the place, including touristy areas near the beach.”

“I don’t go to the beach with my helmet,” he continues. “People just think last-minute, ‘Let me jump on this thing,’ and by then it’s too late.”

Kman says there’s value in considering helmet rentals as part of electric bike and scooter rentals, making it easier for people to choose to be protected in the moment. Jamehdor agrees. “If these companies really want to take safety seriously, they should make people show proof that they’re putting on a helmet before being able to activate those machines,” he says. “There needs to be more security built into these things.”

Overall, doctors stress the importance of using a bike helmet, including on electric bikes and scooters. “A helmet could save your life,” Kman says. “It could prevent a serious facial, neck or neurologic injury that could alter the rest of your life. Remember that these vehicles are common in urban settings where the road is being shared with much bigger vehicles.”

Along with wearing a helmet, Levine says it’s important to use “street sense” around cars. “Be aware, too, that the car is going to sustain much less injury than the biker,” he adds.
