Prestige Biopharma’s Herceptin Biosimilar Tuznue® Receives Positive CHMP Opinion from the EMA

0
  • Following approval by the European Commission, Prestige Biopharma’s Herceptin biosimilar Tuznue® would become the first biosimilar from a Singaporean company to be authorized in the European Union.

SINGAPORE, Aug. 1, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — Prestige Biopharma, a pioneer in biopharmaceuticals, announced that the Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) of the European Medicines Agency (EMA) has recommended marketing authorization for Tuznue®, a Herceptin (trastuzumab) biosimilar. This milestone positions Prestige Biopharma to become the first Singaporean firm to commercialize its biosimilar in the European Union.

The CHMP’s positive opinion is based on clinical evidence from Phase 1 and Phase 3 clinical studies that tested the biosimilarity of Tuznue® to Herceptin®. The Phase 1 clinical PK study in healthy volunteers demonstrated PK equivalence, as well as similarity in safety and immunogenicity. Finally, the global Phase 3 confirmatory efficacy and similarity study met its primary endpoint and demonstrated similarity in efficacy, PK, safety, and immunogenicity in HER2-positive patients with early breast cancer. This favourable decision is a crucial step toward final approval from the European Commission (EC). Once approved, Tuznue® will be commercialized across Europe.

Prestige Biopharma has already established licensing agreements with major pharmaceutical partners for global marketing and sales. These agreements are set to generate immediate milestone payments and provide early revenue for the company. Negotiations are also underway to ensure a strong market entry for Tuznue® in Europe.

“Receiving a positive CHMP opinion for Tuznue® marks a major milestone for Prestige Biopharma, significantly advancing our revenue generation strategy and accelerating future pipeline approvals,” said Lisa Park, the CEO of Prestige Biopharma. “This recognition solidifies our position as a leading biosimilar developer. We are committed to leveraging this achievement to enhance our market presence and drive continued success.”

About TUZNUE® (HD201, Herceptin biosimilar)

Tuznue® is a biosimilar of Herceptin® (trastuzumab), developed to offer a more cost-effective therapeutic alternative for patients. It maintains comparable efficacy and safety profiles to the original branded medication. Tuznue® is indicated for the treatment of patients with HER2-positive metastatic breast cancer (MBC), HER2-positive early breast cancer (EBC), and HER2-positive metastatic gastric cancer (MGC).

Cancer rates in millennials, Gen X-ers have risen starkly in recent years, study finds. Experts have 1 prime suspect.

0

Experts are sounding the alarm as rates of 17 types of cancer in millennials and Gen X-ers have risen dramatically in recent years, a new study shows. For certain cancers, people born in 1990 face two-to-three times the risks that those born in 1955 did, according to the research published in the journal Lancet Public Health. The findings echo the recent worrying rise in young people developing colorectal cancer, but add more forms of the disease to the list of concerns.

It’s too soon to say what is driving the increase in what experts call “early onset” cancers, but they warn that it’s not just due to better screening; people are dying of these diseases at rates and ages not seen in their parents’ generations.

Here’s what to know about the generational risk of cancer and what you can do to reduce yours.

Researchers with the American Cancer Society (ACS) assessed rates of 34 different cancers among those born between 1920 and 1990, based on how many were diagnosed with or died of the disease from 2000 to 2019.

On average, the rates of 17 types of cancer, including pancreatic, breast and gastric cancer, have risen with each new generation since 1920, the study found. Previous ACS research had shown that rates of 11 cancers, including pancreatic, colorectal, kidney, uterine and testicular cancer, had been increasing among young adults. The new study added eight more types of cancer to that list:

  • Gastric cardia cancer (a cancer of the stomach lining)

  • Cancer of the small intestine

  • Estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer

  • Ovarian cancer

  • Liver and bile duct cancer

  • Non-HPV-associated oral and pharynx cancer (only in women)

  • Anal cancer (only in men)

  • Kaposi sarcoma (a cancer of the blood vessel lining and lymph nodes, only in men)

Rates doubled or even tripled for some of these cancers, including kidney, pancreatic and small intestine cancers, in people of either gender. For women, liver cancer incidence has increased two- to threefold since the 1920s. Even cancers that seemed to be in decline for baby boomers and other older generations — including some breast cancers and testicular cancer — are now a greater risk again to millennials and Gen X-ers, the study found.

More young people are dying of some of these cancers as well; mortality from colorectal, gallbladder, testicular and uterine cancers has increased over the generations, as has the fatality rate of liver cancer, but only for women. “That really stood out because the concurrent increase in mortality [and diagnoses] suggests that what we see is not just an artifact due to potentially more frequent screening and diagnosis,” lead study author and senior principal scientist of surveillance and health equity science with ACS, Hyuna Sung, tells Yahoo Life. “Instead, it indicates a genuine increase in risk, with the increases in incidence sufficient to outpace improvements” in diagnostics and treatment.

While the new study doesn’t answer why this is happening, Sung and other experts have a prime suspect in their sights: obesity. Ten out of 17 of the cancers that are becoming more common over the generations have been linked to obesity, the study authors noted.

Research to suss out exactly how obesity might contribute to or cause cancer is ongoing, but there are some leading theories, Timothy Rebbeck, professor of cancer prevention at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, tells Yahoo Life. “When someone is obese, a lot of things change in the body, including chronic inflammation that leads to years and years worth of damage to cells and tissues in the body, which can lead to cancer,” he explains.

According to the MD Anderson Cancer Center, it may not be a person’s body mass index (BMI) directly; rather changes to insulin sensitivity and an increase in certain hormones might fuel out-of-control cell growth and, in turn, lead to cancer.

Coinciding rises in obesity and cancer rates, especially among young adults, suggest that the problem may begin in childhood or perhaps even before people are born, says Rebbeck. “That process of damage to your cells is starting earlier and earlier, so if there’s a 20-year lag from this obesity exposure and it starts at age 10, it’s in your 30s or 40s when cancer risk arises,” he hypothesizes. The timelines also suggest there may be other early life environmental exposures, including factors like antibiotic use or diet that may alter your gut bacteria, which may influence a person’s cancer risk.

While the findings are alarming, experts say not to worry too much. Here’s why: “Cancers diagnosed before age 50 are still relatively rare,” Rebbeck says. Only about 350 out of every 100,000 cases of cancer diagnosed each year are found in people between ages 45 and 49, according to the National Cancer Institute. “It’s not something that people need to start panicking about … but we want people to be informed and start doing things that might have an impact,” says Rebbeck.

That just means making straightforward changes to live the healthiest lifestyle you can and reduce your cancer risks, experts say, by doing your best to maintain a healthy body weight, exercising regularly, eating a balanced diet low in ultra-processed foods and red meat and high in plants and fish like salmon, drinking minimally and not smoking. “None of these things are easy, but they are the things we can recommend,” Rebbeck says.

It’s also important to know your family history and see a health care provider if you notice any changes that could be early warning signs of cancer. For young people, there are “unique symptoms” of some cancers, such as colorectal cancers, including “fatigue, rectal bleeding, abdominal pain, altered bowel habits, or unexplained weight loss, which are really considered red flags for early onset cancer,” says Sung.

Family goes viral for pulling off hilarious airport prank on dad

0

A prank that was successfully played on a Missouri dad has gone viral after his wife and kids stuck a massive photo of his face onto his checked luggage — ensuring he would easily spot his bag coming down the carousel.

Kelsey Thorne, 29, pulled the prank on her dad, Mike Bone, while their family was traveling to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.

Thorne said that her father is colorblind, which can sometimes make it difficult for him to find his belongings.

Delta CEO says CrowdStrike-Microsoft outage cost the airline $500 million

0

Delta Air Lines CEO on CrowdStrike outage: Cost us half a billion dollars in five days

Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian said Wednesday that the massive IT outage earlier this month that stranded thousands of customers will cost it $500 million.

Bastian said the figure includes not just lost revenue but “the tens of millions of dollars per day in compensation and hotels” over a period of five days. The amount is roughly in line with analysts’ estimates. Delta didn’t disclose exactly how many refunds and reimbursement requests it processed but a spokesman said it was in the “thousands.”

The airline canceled over 5,000 flights, more than it had in all of 2019, in the wake of the outage through July 25, which was sparked by a botched CrowdStrike software update and took thousands of Microsoft systems around the world offline. The company had to manually reset 40,000 servers, Bastian said.

After the outage, Delta’s platforms that match flight crews to planes couldn’t keep up with the changes, leading to further disruptions.

The issue was similar to what Southwest Airlines customers suffered when it unraveled after bad weather during year-end holidays in 2022. Delta’s disruption shined a light on how a problem with just one of the many technology platforms airlines rely on can cause large-scale disruptions.

Other airlines recovered faster from the CrowdStrike problem, and Delta’s cascading disruptions and customer response sparked an investigation by the U.S. Department of Transportation. The meltdown was rare for the carrier that markets itself as a premium airline with top rankings in profitability and punctuality among U.S. carriers.

Read more CNBC airline news

Bastian, speaking from Paris, where he traveled last week, told CNBC’s “Squawk Box” on Wednesday that the carrier would seek damages from the disruptions, adding, “We have no choice.”

“If you’re going to be having access, priority access to the Delta ecosystem in terms of technology, you’ve got to test the stuff. You can’t come into a mission critical 24/7 operation and tell us we have a bug,” Bastian said.

CrowdStrike has so far made no offers to help Delta financially, Bastian added, beside offering free consulting advice on dealing with the fallout from the outage. A CrowdStrike spokesperson said in an emailed statement that it has “no knowledge of a lawsuit and have no further comment.” Microsoft didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Delta hired prominent attorney David Boies to seek damages from both CrowdStrike and Microsoft, CNBC reported earlier this week. Boies is known for representing the U.S. government in its landmark antitrust case against Microsoft.

“We have to protect our shareholders. We have to protect our customers, our employees, for the damage, not just to the cost of it, but to the brand, the reputational damage,” Bastian said.

All-New Immersive Indigenous Experience, Sunrise Journeys, Premieres at Uluṟu

0
  • Uluṟu’s desert landscape brings an Indigenous artwork interpretation to life
  • Immersive Indigenous laser, light and sound story-telling experience uses latest animation technology
  • Collaboration between renowned leading  Aṉangu artists and leading visual experience creator, Mandylights

High res. images and video available for download here

ULURU, Australia, July 31, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — Sunrise Journeys, the all-new immersive Indigenous laser, light and sound show that celebrates connection to Country has premiered in the spiritual heart of Australia — Ayers Rock Resort, Uluṟu.

The early morning sensory experience transforms the desert landscape into a giant canvas the size of three football fields (200m by 300m), as a modern Indigenous artwork is interpreted into a kaleidoscope of colour and sound using state-of-the-art animation technology that showcases the artistic expertise of Aṉangu — the Traditional Owners of Uluṟu.

The two-hour story-telling experience sets the scene for nature’s most spectacular show — the dawn of a new day as Uluṟu glows fire-ember red.

Art, Nature and Culture – A Modern Homage:

A deep understanding and appreciation of the natural environment is intrinsic to Aṉangu culture.

Central to Sunrise Journeys is a bespoke painting created by three renowned female Aṉangu artists — Selina Kulitja (Maruku Arts), Denise Brady (Kaltukatjara Art), and Valerie Brumby (Walkatjara Art).

Titled Ngura Nganampa Wiru Mulapa, which translates from Pitjantjatjara to English as “our Country is truly beautiful”, the painting depicts a modern telling of the artists’ shared connection to these lands. During Sunrise Journeys, this painting is interpreted on the desert landscape using laser, light and video projections, while narration from the artists themselves enhances guests’ understanding of the rhythms of the natural world.

Denise Brady, Kaltukatjara Art, says of the Sunrise Journeys collaboration: “Our hearts burn with passion to share our Country and knowledge with the world. We have created Sunrise Journeys to invite people into our culture and share our way of life.”

The accompanying musical score is composed by local Aṉangu musician, Jeremy Whiskey, from Indulkana community in the Aṉangu Pitjantjatjara-Yankunytjatjara Lands.

Cutting-Edge Tech in the Outback

The group’s creative efforts have been brought to life by renowned Australian visual experience team Mandylights. World-leaders in light artistry, the organisation has illuminated iconic landmarks such as the Sydney Harbour Bridge as well as creating the large-scale “Dark Spectrum” installation for Sydney’s Vivid 2024. Other famous projects include the Backstreet Boys’ Las Vegas residency, Dubai New Year’s Eve, and the Chayong International Light Festival in Beijing.

As one of the world’s most remote locations, the landscape of Uluṟu brings both unique challenges and opportunities for technological artistry. At a sustainably constructed open-air amphitheatre, six 30w lasers, seven 12kw projectors and 30 bright field lights work in tandem to tell a spectacular visual story. Meanwhile a state-of-the-art audio-surround system with spatialised audio tracks gives audiences the sensation of being completely immersed or surrounded, as they would in a movie theatre.

To create the stunning visuals, Mandylights designers traced a high-resolution photograph of the painting by hand and divided it into over 170 digital “pieces”. These were animated with video and laser software to match the music’s pace and artists’ narration.

“When the audience witnesses finches emerge from the bush plants, a flock of cockatoos rise in laser lights, and the rippling lines of dry creek beds and sand dunes, they are seeing elements from the original artwork brought to life with the latest animation technology,” says Richard Neville, CEO, Mandylights.

Respecting Indigenous Cultural Intellectual Property

The modern yet culturally rich encounter expands on Ayers Rock Resort’s commitment to community engagement, leadership and respectful tourism. The company set an industry benchmark for Indigenous collaboration and respecting Indigenous Cultural Intellectual Property (ICIP) with the launch of Wintjiri Wiru in May 2023, and Sunrise Journeys continues this commitment.

Matt Cameron-Smith, CEO of Voyages Indigenous Tourism Australia (operators of Ayers Rock Resort, Uluṟu): “Sunrise Journeys elevates our commitment to authentic, meaningful and responsible cultural tourism. It’s a real honour and privilege to be able to work with leading artists of the region and share their unique connection to the natural environment.”

“For thousands of years, art has played such an important part in telling Aṉangu stories and keeping culture strong. Artwork painted in this region now hangs in galleries all over the world, so we’re thrilled to be able to showcase this piece in such a unique way – here, in its desert home. “

“We’re grateful to Denise, Selina, Valerie and Jeremy for sharing their art with the world, and for the opportunity to deepen visitors’ appreciation for Aṉangu culture and the natural beauty of Uluṟu.”

Commencing 1 August 2024, the daily, two-hour Sunrise Journeys experience is priced at AUD$125 per adult and AUD$75 per child. It includes return coach transfers and a seasonal breakfast, with the 2024 menu featuring delights like Quandong Chia and Coconut Pudding; Smoked Kangaroo, Vintage Cheddar and Bush Tomato Croissant; and Australian Chai tea. Sunrise Journeys is timed conveniently before flight schedules to allow guests to fit in a morning tour even on departure day.

The new experience delivers even more options for a visit to Uluṟu, with over 100 tours and experiences now on offer — including Wintjiri Wiru, the award-winning nightly show that sees 1000 drones to tell an ancestral chapter of the Mala story; Field of Light by world renowned artist Bruce Munroe; and the recently hatted dune-top fine-dining experience, Tali Wiru.

Gen Zers put their foot forward in a sporting spirit

0

BEIJING, July 31, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — The second episode of the fourth season of Youth Power, “The Fresh Olympic Spirit of Global Gen Z” was broadcast on July 30. Gen Zers from China, Finland, France, Germany, Greece and the United States gathered in a sports arena and built cross-national friendships through sport. In this encounter, the openness and inclusivity of the sporting spirit was to the fore, as were the innovations, organizational brilliance and technological applications that are all part of staging modern sporting events.

In the Olympics in Paris now on, breakdancing has been added as a Games sport, and skateboarding, surfing and competitive climbing have been retained following their inclusion in the previous Olympics in Tokyo. Stefanie Perner, a Gen Zer from Germany, voiced high expectations for the skateboarding contests. “People used to regard skateboarding as a rebellious sport, or maybe not even sport, just things that kids will do on the street,” she said. “But to me it’s a culture, a community, a way for you to communicate with your cities through your board.”

Emerging technologies such as cloud broadcasting and AI-assisted training are also adding to the spectacle of the Games. Elijah Van Knowles from the United States, who has long practiced wushu at Shanghai University of Sport, said, “From the very university here at Shanghai University of Sports we’ve started going into the deep development of using AI to judge athletes, and it as a way to substitute for human judges.”

The Gen Z guests agreed that technologies should be used in sports in a very discrete way so that the spontaneity and entertainment that are so important to them are not dissipated. Thomas Mattei, a Frenchman studying at Fudan University in Shanghai, said, “Sport is also about spontaneity, and advances are a good part of the Olympics. If you stop (an event) just because the machine says you should, then technology is de-naturing the sport.”

Indeed, the magic of sports lies in their very unpredictability. Anais Fernandez-Laaksonen, a student at Tsinghua University in Beijing who comes from a Finnish family of athletes, said: “People really have a love-hate relationship with sports. There are unpleasant parts, very painful, all the failures and all the injuries. You need to have the perseverance and the bravery to commit to every single decision you make.”

For the Gen Zers in the program, the sporting spirit highlights inclusivity, fair play, solidarity and kindness, encouraging people, in particular the young, to embrace the opportunities of life. Susan St Denis, an American studying at Tsinghua University, said that when she was teaching swimming, children were keen to emulate the US Olympian Michael Phelps, popularly known as the Flying Fish. She then joined a rowing team and was impressed by the women’s rowing in the Olympics in Brazil in 2016.

The host of the episode, Wang Licheng, who studies at Peking University, said, “In the Paris Olympics, for the first time we have the same number of women and men athletes.” St Denis responded, “It wasn’t until 1976 that women were able to compete in rowing at the Olympics. However, even now women athletes do not get the attention they deserve. We don’t get (the same attention) as male athletes do. We don’t get the same amount of coverage.”

The wushu exponent Elijah Van Knowles said wushu holds beauty as an art “not just for fighting people, but also for preserving peace”. He hopes that wushu, with its profound historical and cultural significance, can be included in the Olympics.

Jim Mathiopoulos from Greece, who is studying at Shanghai University of Sport, said he has practiced wushu at his father’s kungfu school since he was young. He dreams of promoting wushu to a wider audience in the birthplace of the Olympics, he said.

“Going into those competitions is not wanting that first place, but for this burning passion and showing what you’ve tried.”

Mathiopoulos is studying Chinese philosophy and history, and says he hopes to bring wushu to the public through online seminars and master classes.

Youth Power, organized by China Daily and first broadcast in June 2021, aims to build a global platform of communication and exchange, focusing on the interests and ideas of Generation Z. The program comes in the form of interviews, forums and speeches, with topics related to anything of current interest in the world.

Losing strands? The week’s best Amazon deals on hair growth products start at $4

0

Sudden hair loss (along with the equally demoralizing thinning and shedding) can feel embarrassing, but it’s actually much more common than you’d think: 40 million men and 20 million women (thanks menopause!) in the U.S. experience it. If you’re one of them, now’s the time to check out trusted, tried-and-true solutions for your follicular woes — especially with the deals on hair-loss products I’ve found this week. Experiment with new routines (a relaxing scalp massage, for example) can do wonders for your strands, not to mention your state of mind.

I’m 51, and I’ve had thinning hair since my mid-40s. To keep my mane healthy and full, I treat the root cause (no pun!) with serums and oils. I also take supplements and manage the appearance of what hair I have left with high-quality styling products (like the best dry shampoos).

Here are a few of my favorite items for fine and thinning hair, currently on sale at Amazon. I’ve had success with all of them — here’s hoping you will too.

Amazon

File this silicone brush under “things you don’t think you need until you try them.” Regular scalp massages are one of the best and first steps you can take if you want to stimulate hair growth.

This brush makes it easy — just apply your shampoo or hair oil and go to town in circular motions for a minute or two. Not only will you be helping unclog pores on your scalp and improve circulation, but the whole process feels amazing.

Grab the doodad while it’s 50% off.

This lightweight, scalp-health-boosting spray was developed with the help of dermatologists to bring volume, bounce and lift to even the thinnest hair.

It’s formulated with vitamins B and E, plus nourishing peptides to texturize hair at the roots without making it crunchy or dry like similar treatments. The result is soft, silky, fuller locks — for under $10.

“I was looking for a product with root lift that didn’t make my scalp itchy or sticky,” said a fan. “This is a very good product. Smells nice. It also doesn’t make my hair greasy, so I can go a couple of days without washing. I don’t need extra product each day either.”

It seems like hooey, but it’s actually true: Topically applied rosemary oil has been clinically proven to initiate new hair growth and help prevent further loss. In fact, a 2015 study suggests that rosemary essential oil is as effective as minoxidil at growing new hair in mice.

This is an excellent rosemary oil should you want to try it out: Botanic Hearth’s formula contains follicle-stimulating biotin, and it’s color-safe. It’s also paraben-free and highly concentrated.

One big problem with fine, thin hair is that it’s hard to find moisturizing, defrizzing products that won’t make your strands look limp. Enter OGX’s weightless dry oil spray, which helps smooth fly-aways, mend split ends and eliminate fuzzy, frizzy summer hair without it looking greasy or heavy.

“This oil is extremely lightweight, does not weigh down hair and the spray bottle projects the perfect amount in each spray,” said one reviewer. “I have fine hair and it leaves it soft, not greasy, and there’s no lack of volume…”

At first glance you might think: Why in the world would I need a silk pillowcase? AM I AN EMPRESS? Are we in Hollywood in 1934? Should I start sleeping in a face of cold cream and calling people dah-ling? Do I need a silk robe and high-heeled slippers too?

But then you learn the facts: Silk pillowcases support the health of both skin AND your hair. Research shows they can help prevent shedding and breakage and can keep your hair from frizzing overnight, leading to less styling and an overall healthier mane.

It’s safe for all hair types (including color-treated) and it’s not tested on animals. But the ingredients are the true stars here: Biotin, vitamin B and caffeine are all proven to nourish fine hair follicles and help stimulate growth.

With 11,000 five-star reviews, this popular set is a steal at 20% off. “My hair has never felt so good,” said one reviewer. “My hair is thin but this does not weigh it down. I also notice a lot less hair loss in my brush and styling tools.”

A rare sale! Nioxin’s award-winning hair treatment works for thinning locks on several levels, providing moisture and strengthening the strands to help thwart breakage while deeply cleansing the scalp of follicle-cloggers like sebum and other oils.

The products are wildly popular, with more than 7,000 five-star Amazon reviewers waxing poetic.

Perfect for women with thinning hair!” exclaims one enthusiastic user. “I’ve tried everything once my hair started to thin as I got older, and nothing has worked until I found this hair system. A friend of mine asked me what I used and now she is using it and seeing [results] with her hair…”

This top-selling hair treatment is a favorite of celebs (including Nicole Kidman) and we can see why: Its wildly popular serum promises to improve the appearance of thinning hair, leaving it looking thicker and fuller.

Also included in the set: Vegamour’s patented Gro gummies, packed with biotin and vitamins A, B-5, C and E, all of which aim to support hair growth from within.

“After six weeks of usage, I can tell a notable difference in the amount of hair I am shedding as well as a visible increase in my hair density,” said one user. “I have a long way to go, but I am loving the results I am seeing now.”

I’ve had good luck plumping up my strands with this volumizing shampoo/conditioner set. It’s packed with biotin, vitamin B5, saw palmetto berry extract and coconut oil and manages to be rich and fortifying without being too heavy for fine hair.

After just one wash, my hair looked fuller and had more body than usual — and using an ample portion of both products didn’t weigh it down.

A quick Nutrafol review: I did not want to like this product. It’s waaayy too expensive. And I don’t like swallowing four horse pills every morning. BUT — and this is a big “but” — when taken consistently, Nutrafol really works for thinning hair. It helped stop my shedding and, after six months, I even saw new hair growth.

I’ve been using it consistently for two years now and it’s kept my hair thick, not quite “in my 20s” thick, but truly close. Today’s the day to try it while it’s on rare sale.

Spirit Airlines is trying to go upmarket with snacks, Wi-Fi and checked bags included

A Spirit commercial airliner prepares to land at San Diego International Airport in San Diego, California, U.S., January 18, 2024.

Mike Blake | Reuters

Free Wi-Fi? Free checked bag? Free snacks? On Spirit?

The Florida-based carrier that is practically synonymous with budget air travel in the U.S. said Tuesday that it plans to offer packages for its highest-priced tickets, wrapping in perks it used to charge for a la carte. It’s a bid to increase revenue as it struggles with the aftermath of a U.S.-blocked takeover by JetBlue, engine recalls, an oversupplied domestic market, and larger rivals who have capitalized on premium and cost-conscious travelers alike.

Starting late next month, Spirit will offer four categories of service:

  • “Go Big” Tickets will include a spot in one of the airline’s Big Front Seats, its roomy seats at the front of its Airbus planes. Instead of upselling travelers for the seat alone, the assignment will come with free Wi-Fi, a checked bag, one piece of cabin luggage, and, CEO Ted Christie told CNBC, “unlimited” snacks and drinks, including alcoholic beverages.
  • Below that package is “Go Comfy,” which will offer travelers a seat with standard legroom but a blocked middle seat for extra space. That offer also includes earlier boarding, one snack, one nonalcoholic beverage, and checked baggage and a carry-on.
  • “Go Savvy” fares come with either a checked bag or a carry-on.
  • Then there’s just “Go,” essentially Spirit’s original product, with just a seat and fees for checked bags, cabin luggage, seat selection, Wi-Fi and snacks.

The options will be available to book Aug. 16, and all four will be available on flights from Aug. 27.

Spirit is competing with larger airline rivals like United that have capitalized on cost-conscious travelers with their own bare-bones products but still offer higher-priced options like extra legroom and first class.

“What we realized now is that we were sort of ceding other markets to other airlines,” Christie said in an interview. “Now we’re saying, no, we can still do what we were doing before, but we’re also going to compete for people who are willing or want a little bit more of a premium feel and and would pay for that. They just didn’t have it on us.”

Spirit earlier this month warned of a wider-than-expected loss after nonticket revenue — what it collects in the form of fees — came in lighter than it had previously forecast. The carrier has also warned pilots about potential furloughs in the coming months.

Spirit isn’t the only carrier looking to increase its upmarket seats to attract more customers. Southwest Airlines, also under pressure to raise revenue, last week said it plans to ditch open seating and offer “premium” seats with more legroom, the biggest overhaul in the airline’s more than 50 years of flying. Frontier Airlines in March said it would start offering blocked middle seats at the front of the plane for a higher price.
