Try the Atlantic diet, snack on berries and skip the butter. 9 health and wellness tips to help you have a healthy week.

0

Hello, health enthusiasts! My name is Kaitlin, and I’m here to provide you with some wellness tips to help you live your best life. The holiday week may have come and gone, but summer is still in high gear — and so is extreme heat. Before you pick out your outfit, check out our guide on how to dress on hot days. Plus, read up on how to have the best July, from celebrating the Summer Olympics to getting your eyes checked. (It is Healthy Vision Month, after all.)

As always, check the weather in your area — and your horoscope, if you’re so inclined. Then read up on the below health and wellness tips to keep your summer the best one yet.

☺️ Practice gratitude

A new study found that older women who experienced more gratitude had a 9% lower risk of death from any cause over three years. Fortunately, gratitude is an easy skill to practice for anyone. Try writing down what you’re thankful for in a gratitude journal each day — it will also help you become more mindful overall.

🫐 Eat berries!

July 11 was National Polyphenol Day — but you should be including polyphenols in your diet year-round. Polyphenols are natural compounds found in plants, which have the power to potentially lower cancer risk, boost brain health and reduce inflammation. Berries, dark chocolate, green tea, red wine, apples and nuts like almonds and walnuts all have polyphenols in them, so you have plenty of opportunities to enjoy these good-for-you compounds.

🪑 Mind your posture and incorporate micro-movements

We know that sitting all day is bad for your health — and sitting on the wrong chair all day, or in the wrong position, can cause major pain. Aim for a chair that has good lumbar support, which can help distribute your body weight more evenly — and don’t stress about maintaining a straight, perfect-posture position all day, which can actually lead to more pain. Instead, incorporate many “micro-movements” throughout your day (like crossing and uncrossing your legs, or shifting your weight) in order to stay comfortable.

🩻 Do a gut check

Gut health is a major topic on social media — but in general, experts say we may be overly concerned with the so-called “healing” of our digestive systems. According to experts who spoke to Women’s Health, though, there are certain signs that you should get a literal gut check, like frequent bouts of diarrhea, constipation or bloating. Just make sure to consult your doctor — not your FYP.

🥔 Adopt the Atlantic diet

The Mediterranean diet gets plenty of praise, but you may also want to try the Atlantic diet, which is inspired by the diets of the people living in northwest Spain and Portugal. While there’s plenty of overlap between the Mediterranean diet and the Atlantic diet (both love olive oil, for example!), the Atlantic diet proposes eating more seafood, dairy, lean meat and nuts, as well as carbs like potatoes and bread. (The Mediterranean diet’s carb of choice is pasta.)

Got acne? The Mediterranean diet might be your better bet, according to a new study, which found that the diet led to significant reductions in skin lesions for participants. Researchers think that the anti-inflammatory effects of the low-sugar, high-omega-3 diet could be the reason why.

🐟 Try tinned fish

This newly trendy food (which includes sardines, anchovies and mackerel) is shelf-stable, and comes with good-for-you nutrients like B12 and vitamin D, as well as minerals like calcium and selenium. Toss some tiny fish in your salad, or blend them into a pasta sauce for a rich umami flavor.

There’s a lot of buzz (pun intended) around vibration plates, with some people claiming that exercising on these platforms can improve bone density and increase muscle strength. Experts say they’re onto something: These plates make your muscles contract in an attempt to maintain balance, which can make your body work harder overall. Next time you see one of these shake machines at the gym, hop on and try some squats or arm circles.

💬 Get better at starting conversations

Going to a party where you won’t know anyone? Saba Harouni Lurie, a licensed marriage and family therapist, gives helpful tips on how to feel more comfortable striking up conversations — like offering to assist the host.

🧈 Eat more plant oils — and less butter

A new study published in Nature Medicine found that swapping out saturated animal fats (like butter) for plant-based unsaturated fats (like olive oil, a major component of the Mediterranean diet) may lower your risk of developing conditions like cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. So, next time you’re looking for a simple pasta dish, go for a drizzle of EVOO instead of butter and noodles.

Exploring New Mexico: A travel guide to the Land of Enchantment

0

New Mexico, often called the Land of Enchantment, is a stunning vacation destination, celebrated for its diverse landscapes and Native American, Spanish and Anglo-American cultural influences.

Before European colonization, the region was shaped by the traditions of Hispanic and Native American people.

Today, the state’s compelling history is a main attraction for visitors often awestruck by its rugged and varied terrain.

From the local food and art to the overall character, New Mexico reflects the convergence of cultures to define this unique state.

Another reason visitors come to New Mexico is the alluring landscapes, ranging from dry deserts to lush forests.

Many people often imagine red rocks, vast deserts and distinctive rock formations of the Southwest when they think of New Mexico.

What might surprise new visitors is the white sand dunes, river gorges and dense, evergreen woodlands included in the state’s natural diverse landscape.

Here are some of the top locations to put on your New Mexico itinerary:

Santa Fe

Santa Fe, New Mexico, is the oldest capital city in the United States. Inhabited in 1607, it was officially settled between 1609 and 1610, according to the city’s official website. Originally established with European-style dwellings, the city is full of historical sites and experiences.

A visit to Sante Fe can include a trip to the historic Santa Fe Plaza, exploration of the oldest church in America and a visit to one of the many museums, such as the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, where the 20th century artist’s love for Northern New Mexico and Santa Fe is on display.

5 TRAVEL ESSENTIALS TO PACK FOR YOUR SUMMER GETAWAY

Families visiting the city will enjoy the Santa Fe Children’s Museum, Santa Fe Southern Railway and the Museum of International Folk Art.

Albuquerque

Albuquerque’s rich history and resulting culture are reasons it is a popular city to visit.

Albuquerque was established in 1706, but the city was originally inhabited by Native Americans. Following its establishment, the city became an important trading center. Although Albuquerque has become an area known for its high-tech industry, its historical significance has been preserved.

Beyond the historical significance of Albuquerque, the city attracts visitors with its family-friendly attractions, such as the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, which is a yearly hot air balloon festival. Another activity that families visiting New Mexico can enjoy is a trip to the ABQ BioPark, where they can explore the zoo, botanic garden and aquarium.

Visitors of all ages can also enjoy a scenic ride on the Sandia Peak Tramway, North America’s longest aerial tram ride. For those not afraid of heights, the tram offers fresh mountain air and incredible panoramic views of New Mexico.

Taos

Taos is best known among ski enthusiasts. Located in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains near New Mexico’s high desert, the small town offers ski opportunities for those who enjoy the popular winter sport.

Taos is also a haven for the arts. The Taos art colony was founded in Taos, New Mexico, because of the creative culture of the Pueblo people. The area celebrated a diverse range of artistic mediums, including furniture and tin work.

Taos received a modern artistic makeover in the early 20th century, and there are more than 70 galleries in Taos, according to Taos.org.

Taos is also home to the Taos Pueblo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the oldest inhabited sites in the country. For context, other UNESCO-recognized historical cultural landmarks include the Taj Mahal in India and the Grand Canyon in the United States. The pueblo features 1,000-year-old adobe homes that exemplify the early history of the village. Travelers to northern New Mexico are welcome to visit the pueblos.

Carlsbad Caverns National Park

The caverns of Carlsbad Caverns National Park in New Mexico, located in the Guadalupe Mountains, is a large underground system formed over 4 million years ago, according to the National Park Service (NPS). The park consists of more than 100 limestone caves formed through a complex geological process involving acid dissolving the Capitan limestone, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

One of the most notable cave chambers in North America, because of its size by volume and ease of accessibility for visitors, is located in Carlsbad Caverns.

The Big Room is a 1.25-mile trail that takes around an hour and a half to walk, according to NPS.

White Sands National Park

White Sands is a national park in New Mexico. Originally designated as a national monument in 1933, it was redesignated as a national park in 2019, according to the NPS. The White Sands National Park preserves a large portion of the unique white gypsum sand dune field and the plants and animals that live there.

Not only is it a remarkable place to see, the park offers a full day’s worth of activities. The day can end with a sunset stroll around one-half mile long, according to the NPS.

Harley-Davidson Museum to be site of GOP event in US motorcycle mecca Milwaukee

0

Milwaukee, Wisconsin is America’s hog heaven.

The city celebrates its status as the birthplace of Harley-Davidson motorcycles, a high-powered global symbol of American freedom, as the GOP Convention shortly rolls into town.

Delegates to the Republican National Convention say they’re fueled by positive vibes and energy — and some plan to make the Harley-Davidson Museum a key stop during the celebrations and events.

MEET THE AMERICAN WHO CREATED NASCAR: BILL FRANCE SR., DAYTONA SPEED DEMON, RACETRACK PIONEER

Milwaukee “isn’t necessarily a place where many of our delegates have been before,” Jessica Patterson, chair of the California GOP, said in a release, adding that she wants delegates to get a feel for Milwaukee’s history and culture.

Among other stops, the California delegation’s tour of Milwaukee history will include a luncheon at the Harley-Davidson Museum, according to the release. Fox News Digital reached out to the company and to the museum for additional comment.

The showcase of American motorcycle heritage opened 16 years ago, on July 12, 2008. It’s proven a destination for motorcycle enthusiasts and non-riders interested in American heritage.

The three-building complex on 20 acres contains over 450 Harley-Davidson motorcycles and hundreds of thousands of artifacts from Harley-Davidson’s history, according to the company.

“The Harley-Davidson Museum tells more than the story of a motorcycle brand,” reports travel website wandertooth.com.

“It tells the story of Milwaukee and – it’s really hard to write this in a way that doesn’t sound completely cheesy — of the American Dream.

The museum celebrates the company’s influence on popular cultural and American heritage and also chronicles the dramatic story of the brand, which often teetered on the brink of disaster.

Harley-Davidson was founded in Milwaukee in 1903 by William Harley and partners and brothers Arthur, Walter and William Davidson.

Harley and the Davidson boys grew up neighbors and friends. Harley and Arthur Davidson were both bicycle enthusiasts and mechanics.

MEET THE AMERICAN WHO FOUNDED THE STURGIS MOTORCYCLE RALLY, ‘PUT THE BROTHERHOOD IN MOTORCYCLES’

They began tinkering with small internal combustion engines. They put motors on bicycles – their first Harley-Davidson motorcycles. Harley-Davidson, the museum notes, sold just three motorcycles in 1905.

Harley-Davidson produced 163,000 bikes in 2023, making it one of the world’s largest motorcycle companies. It brought in more than $5.8 billion in revenue, according to reports from the now publicly traded company.

More dramatically than just the raw numbers, Harley-Davidson motorcycles have grown into a muscular symbol of the United States and the freedom of its open roads.

Harley-Davidson’s image of rugged American individualism makes it a favorite among freedom-loving GOP politicians and supporters.

Startups are building balloons to hoist tourists 100,000 feet into the stratosphere

0

Commercial space flight is becoming more and more common, with companies including SpaceX, Blue Origin and Virgin Galactic all transporting paid customers into space over the last several years.

People interested in seeing the earth from an unusual vantage point may soon have another option. CNBC spoke to three startups — France-based Zephalto, Florida-based Space Perspective and Arizona-based World View — that aim to hoist tourists to the stratosphere using pressurized capsules and massive gas-filled balloons.

“The capsule itself is designed to to carry eight customers and two crew into the stratosphere,” said Ryan Hartman, CEO of World View. “There will be a center bar where people can gather, and then, of course, there will be a bathroom aboard the capsule.”

The balloon rides will last around 6 hours, but will not take passengers all the way to space. Most will reach heights of 15 to 19 miles above the earth’s surface, flying in an area known as the stratosphere. The start of space is generally accepted by the U.S. government to be around 80 kilometers, or about 50 miles, above the earth’s surface.

Jane Poynter, founder and co-CEO of Space Perspective, has a differing view.

“There is no universal definition of space,” Poynter said. “We are regulated as a spaceship. If we go over 98,000 feet, we are a spaceship. Outside the capsule, it’s essentially a vacuum. We’re above 99% of Earth’s atmosphere, which is why the sky is so deep black.”

Compared to rocket-powered space tourism, the physical sensation that passengers will experience on a stratospheric balloon ride is more comparable to being on an airplane. Passengers will not experience weightlessness.

“We don’t need any physical requirements to board the balloon,” said Vincent Farret d’Astiès, the founder and chief pilot at Zephalto. “If you can board a standard plane, you can board the balloon.”

All three companies told CNBC that they were pleased with consumer interest. World Views says it sold 1,250 tickets so far while Space Perspective has sold 1,800. Zephalto did not tell CNBC how many tickets it sold, but said its initial flights were fully booked.

Ticket prices range from $50,000 per seat with World View to around $184,000 with Zephalto. Space Perspective sells tickets to its experience for $125,000 per seat. That’s all assuming commercial service gets off the ground.

Only Zephalto has performed crewed tests so far, though not at the company’s target altitude of about 15 miles above the earth’s surface.

High above the clouds — the rise of stratospheric balloon tourism

A number of startups are hoping to hoist tourists to the stratosphere using pressurized capsules and massive gas-filled balloons. CNBC spoke to three of them, France-based Zephalto, Florida-based Space Perspective and Arizona-based World View. The balloon trips wouldn’t take passengers all the way into space but the companies said passengers would be able to experience the “overview effect,” a common, highly emotional phenomenon felt by astronauts when they see the earth against the blackness of space.

Hong Kong Harbourfront Event Attracts Record Number of Tourists

HONG KONG, July 13, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — The “100% DORAEMON & FRIENDS” exhibition opens its doors today in Tsim Sha Tsui’s K11 art and cultural district, attracting a record-breaking crowd. The event, featuring the beloved 1969 manga character, Doraemon, underscores Hong Kong’s emerging status as a cultural hub.

The exhibition, held at the renowned Avenue of Stars, drew a significant influx of visitors to the Tsim Sha Tsui promenade. The event kicked off with a “blue” carpet at the Avenue, leading to large-scale Doraemon sculptures scattered both indoors and outdoors. According to K11 spokesperson, the footfall marked an impressive increase compared to the usual traffic.

The centrepiece of the exhibition was a 12-meter inflatable Doraemon, touted as the world’s tallest. The magnitude of the attraction highlights Hong Kong’s commitment to hosting grand cultural events.

This event is a part of Hong Kong’s broader strategy to capitalise on the ‘Mega Events Economy.’ Since 2022, the city has been actively strategising to establish itself as a hub for major cultural gatherings. Government officials stress that such events are vital for boosting tourism and invigorating the local economy. High-profile events, like Art Basel Hong Kong, attest to the city’s expanding influence in the cultural IP landscape.

According to the officials, these mega events, strategically leveraging popular culture, aim not only to draw tourists but also to stimulate local spending, benefiting sectors from retail to hospitality. Reports indicate that one tourist at the exhibition plans to spend a substantial sum on their trip, reflecting the broader economic benefits tied to such cultural attractions.

Adrian Cheng, Founder of K11 and a strong advocate of cultural exchange, remarked on the event: “This exhibition exemplifies the substantial economic impact that cultural IP can bring to Hong Kong. It’s a vibrant demonstration of how the fusion of culture and commerce can energise our city’s economy.”

Janet, a visitor who travelled from the Philippines, said, “I knew I had to come to Hong Kong when I first heard about the exhibition. It’s always wonderful to see your favourite childhood character in ‘real life’. We rarely get events like this at home, so I’m ready to spend HK$15,000 on merchandises and other Doraemon experiences that comes with the show.”

While merchandises are flying off the shelves at the promenade, adjacent to the exhibition at K11 MUSEA, the restaurant is drawing in locals and travellers with its Doraemon-themed set menu. Another restaurant operator, LUDBUDS F&B Group, which runs several restaurants in the Tsim Sha Tsui area, also has similar offerings.

“The exhibition has clearly brought more tourists and families to Tsim Sha Tsui. It opens up the opportunity to attract customers with our Doraemon set menu,” said Berfa Chow, Chief Operating Officer of LUBUDS F&B Group Ltd. Chow estimates that the revenue will increase by 30-40% during the event period.

Hotel stays generated by the event are also seeing a boost. Casper Tsui, Executive Director of the Federation of Hong Kong Hotel Owners, said, “The Doraemon exhibition, which runs across July and August, coincides with other large-scale exhibitions such as the Book Fair and Animation-Comic-Game Hong Kong. Additionally, there will be an exhibition football match featuring a La Liga team in Hong Kong. This series of events is expected to attract overnight visitors from the region and boost hotel occupancy rates. Occupancy rate of hotels in prime locations is expected to reach 80-90%, with hotels with special themes likely more.

As Hong Kong continues to curate and host innovative, large-scale cultural events, it solidifies its reputation as a premier destination for global cultural exchange. The DORAEMON exhibition is more than just an attraction; it embodies the city’s strategic economic and cultural vision.

K11 Founder Adrian Cheng, said, “The ‘100% DORAEMON & FRIENDS’ exhibition is not only a mega event for the city and the region, but also a prime example of cultural IP exchange. It successfully brings the iconic Japanese cultural IP to Hong Kong and spotlights other anime-inspired figures and Hong Kong film stars celebrated on the Avenue of Stars. This exhibition reflects Hong Kong’s status as East-meets-West Centre for International Cultural Exchange, which will continue to boost our tourism, F&B, and retail industries, generating both popularity and economic prosperity.”
