$799 at Amazon

Intended use: With so many options, you’ll want to zero in on a grill that’s practical for your space and cooking taste. “There are so many choices in grills today, it’s easy to get drawn in by some fancy feature that you’ll never need,” notes world barbecue champion Melissa Cookston, owner of Memphis BBQ Co. “Are you cooking mainly burgers, steaks and hot dogs, or do you want more versatility? Would you prefer gas or charcoal? Are you cooking just for the immediate family?”

Type of fuel: If you’re planning to use your grill for regular, weeknight cooking, Fox advises going for a gas grill that connects to a propane tank and can be ready to go in five to 10 minutes. If you dream of a grill that doubles as a smoker, often requiring wood, a ceramic grill is a great option — but know that it’ll take 45 minutes to an hour to heat up (not great on a weeknight), says Jonathan Fox of Atlanta’s Fox Bros. Bar-B-Q. Charcoal grills fall somewhere in the middle for heat-up time and can add a unique smoky flavor to veggies and meats.

Experience level: Before you go out and buy the most expensive option with all the bells and whistles, get real about your skill set in the kitchen, er, backyard. Says Fox: “What is your skill set on a grill: novice, hold-your-own or the next great meat influencer? These are some great questions to ask.”

Price point: You don’t have to break the bank to make a great meal on the grill. But price will likely be a major factor as you shop. With that in mind, Fox says a higher price tag isn’t always better or necessary, but more expensive grills do tend to last longer.

Propane and charcoal differ primarily in their method of combustion. Propane provides consistent heat and is easy to ignite, while charcoal creates a smokier flavor and reaches higher cooking temperatures. Keep in mind that charcoal grills require much more prep and cleanup time.

Pellet grills burn wood pellets (essentially pieces of compressed hardwood). Wood pellets are typically moved from a hopper to a fire pot (via an auger) — where they’re then ignited — and typically rely on a precise system that regulates their heat output for a consistent cooking experience and a natural woodsmoke taste.

It all depends! Griddles and grills serve different purposes, so you’ll want to figure out which types of foods you plan to cook primarily. Griddles are ideal for pancakes and eggs given their flat surface, while grills lend a smoky flavor — and those signature grill marks — that a griddle can’t achieve.

Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour shows trigger earthquake readings in Scotland; estimated $98 million economic boost

Taylor Swift’s three nights of sold-out concerts in Edinburgh, Scotland, triggered earthquake readings up to nearly four miles from the show venue, according to the British Geological Survey, the country’s national earthquake monitoring agency.

And the financial boost to both the city and the entire country is expected to be seismic, too, with Swift’s Eras Tour set to add an estimated £1 billion ($1.27 billion) to the British economy, according to research from U.K. bank Barclays.

Edinburgh’s Murrayfield Stadium saw record-breaking attendance over the concert weekend as the American megastar serenaded glitter-clad fans for roughly 3½ hours each night on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

“The activity was mainly generated by fans dancing in time to the music and reached its peak at 160 beats per minute (bpm) during ‘…Ready For It?’, where the crowd was transmitting approximately 80 kW of power,” BGS wrote in a report, adding that that was “equivalent to around 10-16 car batteries.”

BGS uses advanced scientific instruments delicate enough to identify even the slightest seismic activity from miles away; while it detected the stadium’s vibrations, they were “unlikely to have been felt by anyone other that those in the immediate vicinity,” the agency wrote.

Swift’s songs “Ready For It?” “Cruel Summer” and “Champagne Problems” generated the most significant seismic activity each night, it said. Even with Scotland’s chilly temperatures and occasional bursts of rain, fans appeared determined to tolerate it and shake it off in the stands.

Record attendance

Friday’s concert, the very first night of Swift’s Edinburgh leg with roughly 73,000 people in attendance, broke a record as the most highly attended concert in Scottish history — and each subsequent night then broke the previous night’s record, with a final all-time high attendance for Scotland recorded on Sunday.

“It’s been shockingly amazing in Edinburgh because every night I got to go on stage and they pulled me aside and said, ‘You know this crowd broke the all-time stadium attendance record for all of Scotland for all of time’,” Swift told fans from the stage Sunday.

“Thank you, Edinburgh! That’s absolutely the wildest way to welcome a lass to your city.”

City officials knew all too well Swift’s reputation for boosting local economies; when tens of thousands of tourists streamed into the city for the concert weekend, local authorities and businesses were ready for it.

Edinburgh set up an official online Taylor Swift Fan Hub and advertised a curated “Taylored Taste Trail” involving more than 40 local businesses offering Swift-themed cocktails, pastries, deals and activities to capitalize on the international visitor gold rush.

“These sell-out shows brought huge and wide-ranging benefits to the city — reflected both in terms of the estimated up to £77m ($98 million) it contributed to the local economy, but also as a further boost to our global reputation as a great place to live, work and visit,” Edinburgh City Council Leader Cammy Day wrote in a post on the city’s official government website Wednesday.

“I’d also like to pay tribute to the hundreds of thousands of Swifties for their behaviour which, by all accounts, was exemplary,” Day added.

Swift’s Eras Tour spans 22 countries and 152 dates over 21 months, and has already shattered records as the highest-grossing concert tour of all time, surpassing $1 billion in revenue in its first eight months. For reference, the world’s second-highest grossing show, Elton John’s Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour, accumulated $939 million over five years.

The American singer-songwriter has a total of fifteen shows planned in the U.K. including her three performances in Scotland, with three nights in Liverpool, England, one in Cardiff, Wales, and eight shows at London’s Wembley Stadium across June and August.

Correction: The BGS wrote in a report that the power from the crowd was “equivalent to around 10-16 car batteries.” An earlier version had an inaccurate description previously provided by the agency.

Barolo and Barbaresco inaugurate the wine tourism season

The Langhe area opens the wine tourism season, offering superb wines and magnificent landscapes

MILAN, June 13, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — Data collected from a study by Divinea indicate that 43.8% of those who booked a wine cellar experience in Italy in 2023 are 25 to 34 years old, and the number of cellars open for visits on Saturday has risen to 78.1%. While this phenomenon varies greatly from one wine producing land to another, once more the Langhe have proven themselves to be a highly attractive area.

A new phenomenon: the de-seasonalisation of wine tourism

Two factors encourage visits to cellars during the entire year. Milder autumn and winter temperatures on the one hand, and the rising number of cellars that have developed targeted seasonal offerings on the other.

A unique land

The Langhe are in southern Piedmont. The name, of Celtic origin, means “strips of land” and refers to the elongated hills, often very steep-sided, which run parallel to each other, forming numerous narrow and steep valleys. The Langhe area is one of the most generous regions in the world in terms of the quality and variety of its wine production.

The roots of these great wines stem from the singular geographic position, suitable climate and rich substrate, which distinguish these hill areas, making them an environment rich in biodiversity.

Uniqueness and exceptionalness have meant that over the years the Langhe have become an important tourist and wine tourism destination, responding effectively to a demand that has progressively surfaced in the general public, in Italy and beyond.

The Barolo Barbaresco in numbers

The Barolo Barbaresco Alba Langhe e Dogliani includes 579 member wineries to date, 10 thousand hectares of protected denomination vine fields, which break down as follows: Barolo 2,258 hectares; Barbaresco 859; Dogliani 766; Diano d’Alba 204; Barbera d’Alba 1,734; Nebbiolo d’Alba 1174; Dolcetto d’Alba 934; Langhe 2,620 hectares.

With 66 million bottles of wine produced, it boasts 9 protected denominations (Barolo, Barbaresco, Dogliani, Dolcetto di Diano d’Alba, Barbera d’Alba, Langhe, Dolcetto d’Alba, Nebbiolo d’Alba, Verduno Pelaverga).

Barolo & Barbaresco World Opening is part of the European campaign “Top Tales: a piece of Europe on your table,” a project funded by the European Union and promoted by the DOCG Barolo and Barbaresco, Fontina PDO Valle d’Aosta, and Riso di Baraggia Biellese e Vercellese PDO.

Dyson 360 Vis Nav robot vacuum review: High on suction, low on features

0

Do you hate vacuuming? Do you like purple? Do you have $1,200? Then do I have a product for you. The Dyson 360 Vis Nav is a robot sweeper that looks like no other and, in some respects, vacuums like no other. Unfortunately, it’s also priced that way. That’s not a huge surprise; Dyson products have always fetched a premium, and I understand why: For the most part they’re fantastic. But with other robot vacs selling for as little as $100, and some adding mopping to the mix for just a little more, can this one justify such an exorbitant premium? (Spoiler alert: No.) Here’s my Dyson 360 Vis Nav review.

Rick Broida/Yahoo News

VERDICT: Even if you can afford it, the Dyson 360 Vis Nav isn’t a smart buy. While it does an admirable job sucking up dirt, it’s quite limited overall. Hard on the decor, too.

Pros

  • Distinctive, futuristic looks…
  • Easy-to-empty dustbin…
  • Considerable suction power…
  • Dyson app makes operation easy, especially setting up cleaning zones
Cons

  • …but also an eyesore
  • …but no self-emptying dock
  • …but no mop
  • Can get very loud
  • Short battery life
  • Insanely expensive
  • Tiny dustbin needs to be emptied often

$1,200 at Amazon

First things first: This is a vacuum and only a vacuum; it doesn’t mop, a feature you now find in every cleaner priced over $1,000 (and plenty priced below). What’s more, it doesn’t have a self-emptying dock for its dustbin, something that’s also a staple in even budget-priced robo-vacs. (Example: The Eufy L60, currently selling for $300.)

Assuming you’re still here after that bombshell, let’s talk about the Vis Nav’s design. The vast majority of robot vacuums are black or white, and most are circular as well. The glossy purple Vis Nav is shaped more like a letter D, with its roller brush on prominent display in the front (much like on an upright vac).

A close-up of the Dyson 360 Vis Nav connected to its charging dock.

As if the Dyson 360 Vis Nav wasn’t ostentatious enough already, there’s a weird placard affixed to the back of the dock. Maybe the checkered-flag symbols are supposed to add to the race-car theme? (Rick Broida/Yahoo News)

It’s really cool-looking, no question; very futuristic and sports car-like. The embedded silver dustbin reminds me of something you’d see under the hood of a vintage roadster. But the Vis Nav sticks out like a sore thumb in my house, and it’s entirely possible someone who lives here remarked, “What is that doing here? It’s not staying, is it?”

Not that other robot vacuums are especially attractive, but I can envision a lot of objections to this color. Not helping matters: The dock requires you to attach a weird placard to the backside (maybe to help with return navigation?), adding another weird and unappealing visual element to the setup.

At least actual setup is quite easy, starting with an illustrated first-steps guide. As with most such products, you plug in the dock (making sure to place it somewhere there’s a bit of space on either side), place the vacuum on it so it starts charging, then install the companion app on your phone.

That app, MyDyson, is excellent, one of the most straightforward and novice-friendly I’ve tried. It walks you through the remaining setup steps, culminating with a brief tutorial about getting your home ready for cleaning. Unfortunately, that includes things like removing any and all small items from the floor (cords, clothes, etc.), suggesting the Vis Nav isn’t smart enough to detect and navigate around them. More on that in a bit.

Once the robot performs an initial mapping of your space, you can designate individual rooms — nice if you want it to clean, say, just the kitchen after a marathon bread-making session has left flour all over the floor. Dyson’s app makes this “zoning” setup admirably easy, with a lot more handholding than you get from most vacuum apps and a lot less confusion overall. Just one shortcoming: You can’t spot-clean an individual area — say, just where the flour is. It’s an entire room or nothing.

Miscellaneous screenshots from the generally excellent MyDyson app.

Miscellaneous screenshots from the generally excellent MyDyson app. At left, the “heat map” showing where it detected the most dirt. Center: Choosing Boost mode means more power but multiple recharging sessions needed. Right: An error message resulting from an overloaded dustbin. But why didn’t it just say “empty dustbin”? (Rick Broida/Yahoo News)

The app also shows a “heat map” of where the Vis Nav encountered the most dust and debris during its last run. It looks really cool, and it informs where the robot will focus more cleaning efforts on subsequent runs, but it’s kind of superfluous data for the user. I’m reminded of Jerry Seinfeld’s response when the pilot announces everything he’s going to be doing during the flight: “Uh, yeah, fine. Just do whatever the hell it is you gotta do.”

The vacuum’s battery is good for around 65 minutes of cleaning, according to Dyson — definitely on the low side. Every other vacuum I’ve tested could cover the modestly sized main floor of my home without having to recharge; the Vis Nav had to return to the dock once to recharge.

To be fair, this ‘bot packs more suction power than most, though it’s a bit hard to quantify. Dyson doesn’t rely on the same Pa (Pascals) ratings as most other vacs; instead, the company indicates AW (Air Watts) power, in this case 65 AW. Dyson says that equates to “2x the suction of any other robot vacuum,” a pretty bold claim. To put that in perspective, the company’s V8 cordless vac offers 115 AW. That’s not to say the Vis Nav isn’t powerful, or more powerful than the competition, just that it’s beat by another Dyson product priced considerably less ($390 at this writing).

Dyson also promises 360-degree navigation bolstered by 26 sensors. I don’t know if it’s a fault of the hardware or the software, but during my initial cleaning run, the Vis Nav got stuck under an IKEA table. I’m really sick of robot vacuums that don’t know how tall they are and can’t gauge where they can fit. After I freed it from the table, I watched while it tried repeatedly to squeeze itself under it again. It didn’t get stuck again, thankfully, and eventually it gave up — until the next visit to this room, when it once again tried to get under the same table.

A photo of the Dyson Vis Nav getting stuck under an IKEA table.

The Vis Nav really wanted to get under this table, but it was just a hair too tall. If this robot has “visual navigation,” as its name suggests, why doesn’t it know its height limitations? (Rick Broida/Yahoo News)

On a subsequent cleaning, I tasked it with just the living room, which it polished off in just under 20 minutes. But afterward the app informed me the Vis Nav “needed attention,” which seemed odd given that it had successfully returned to the dock; it wasn’t stuck somewhere or snagged on a shoelace. The subsequent error message indicated a blockage, which I also found surprising given that it had only done one full cleaning and one small-ish room.

Turns out, the dustbin was full — like, really full. I’ve been spoiled by self-emptying robot vacs, which can go for weeks without needing dustbin attention. It’s a testament to the Vis Nav’s suction power that it collected so much dirt. But the comparatively tiny bin will need to be manually emptied after nearly every clean, and although it’s easy to do — slide it out, hold it over a trashcan, press an “eject” button — it gets to be a chore.

Once again, it’s all but inexcusable that Dyson would charge $1,200 for this machine and not include a self-emptying dock.

Meanwhile, the Vis Nav is noisy. I started off using Auto mode, which theoretically boosts suction where needed and reduces it where not. I get that a powerful vacuum is going to make noise, but it’s loud even when it’s just driving around, not actively vacuuming. There’s also a low-level grinding sound at times, to the point where I didn’t want to nearby the Vis Nav when it was running.

Other available cleaning modes include Quick, Quiet and Boost; I tried Quiet and it helped somewhat, but overall this is one of the noisier robot vacs I’ve tested.

That said, I can’t argue with results: It did a great job on carpets and rugs, and pretty well on hard floors. (I did occasionally find a few crumbs it missed.)

I come here not to bury Dyson, but to praise it: I’ve owned two of the company’s vacuums, a handheld and an upright, for over 14 years, and they’ve been flawless. I love them.

I do not love the 360 Vis Nav, despite it being one of the easiest robot vacuums to use and one of the most powerful (at least as evidenced by how much dirt it removed from my floors). I just can’t get past the price. It doesn’t empty itself. It doesn’t mop. It’s not smart enough to avoid simple obstacles like too-low tables and potentially ruinous ones like pet waste. And let me be blunt: It looks ridiculous. Cool, but ridiculous as a home appliance.

Would I feel differently if this had a price tag of, say, $600? I would, because then the disparity between this and other expensive robo-cleaners wouldn’t seem so large; I could more easily overlook the Vis Nav’s shortcomings. Dyson makes some incredible vacuums; this isn’t one of them.

Cubic Invests in LOPE and Jingding Electric to Create a Comprehensive Supply Chain for Premixed Gas Condensing Boilers

Mr. Qi Wang, director of the Utilization Committee and Gas Heating Committee of China Gas Society of China Civil Engineering Society, states,

“Currently, in the wall-mounted gas boiler industry, the trend of leveraging sensor technology for intelligent upgrades and applying full premixed condensing technology to improve thermal efficiency and reduce pollutant emissions is becoming increasingly evident. Cubic will fully utilize its advantages in gas sensor technology to rapidly expand its business landscape in the full premixed condensing wall-mounted gas boiler industry. It is worth looking forward to its collaboration with LOPE and Jingding Electric, which will contribute significantly to the development of the industry.”

According to the data released at the annual Chinese gas heating industry conference, it reveals that China’s market inventory for wall-mounted gas boilers exceeds 34 million units. Notably, over 10 million of these units are more than eight years old, and around 5 million are aged between 10 and 15 years, highlighting a substantial potential market for replacements. Currently, the majority of these boilers are direct gas-fired types, which are notably inefficient in terms of combustion and produce high emissions. Meanwhile, condensing wall-mounted gas boilers, which are more efficient and environmentally friendly, make up only about 2.3 million units, or 7% of the total inventory. This situation underscores a critical need for China to shift towards developing smart premixed condensing wall-mounted gas boilers.

Leveraging its gas sensor technology platform and the technical and industrial accumulation of its core management team in the field of combustion science and technology, Cubic has established a strong R&D team in 2022 and initiated the development of low-carbon gas combustion technologies, aiming to build an industrial ecosystem for residential, commercial, and industrial gas fired boilers with sensors, actuators, and controllers as the core supply chain. Currently, Cubic has made breakthroughs in the R&D of gas sensors for new types of full premixed condensing wall-mounted gas boilers, as well as in brushless direct current (BLDC) fans and intelligent gas combustion controllers, earning recognition from experts within the industry. Simultaneously, experimental facilities have been established for key components, including gas proportional valves, gas burners, and heat exchangers for full premixed condensing wall-mounted gas boilers, and Cubic has initiated business negotiations for cooperation with Chinese core component supply enterprises.

Through the strategic investment, Cubic aims to integrate resources related to stainless steel heat exchangers, burners, gas proportional valves, variable frequency BLDC fans, gas sensors, intelligent gas combustion controllers, and other components involved in full premixed condensing wall-mounted gas boilers, establishing a “sensor-actuator-controller” one-stop supply chain solution in this field.

Dr. Youhui Xiong, Chairman of Cubic, has high expectations for this strategic investment in LOPE and Jingding Electric. He thinks that LOPE has become one of the few enterprises globally capable of mass-production of stainless-steel condensing heat exchangers after seven years of innovation, leveraging international scientific and technological resources. Jingding Electric, with nearly two decades of experience in the gas proportional valve field, is an important standard drafting or participating member in the China gas appliance industry. Cubic possesses significant technological and industrial advantages in gas sensors, gas metering, and intelligent gas controllers. By leveraging the significant industrial opportunities and the expansive, cohesive domestic market fostered by the ‘low-carbon’ goals, their tripartite collaboration and deep cooperation are set to powerfully accelerate the evolution of China’s full premixed condensing wall-mounted gas boiler sector towards premium branding.

Zhongshan LOPE Thermal Technology Ltd.

LOPE is currently the only Chinese stainless steel full premixed condensing heat exchanger manufacturer that has imported international advanced equipment and technology. It is one of the few companies globally that simultaneously possesses condensing heat exchanger and full premixed combustion technology.

LOPE’s products boast an impressive coverage rate of over 80% in the market for Chinese branded full premixed condensing wall-mounted gas boilers, and also exported in large quantities to European markets.  These products have received widespread acclaim from both domestic customers in China and international clients. LOPE has achieved factory quality management system certification and operates its own testing center and thermal laboratory. Furthermore, the company has established a cooperative research and development center in Europe, secured multiple patents, and has become a highly specialized manufacturer in the field of full premixed condensing wall-mounted gas boilers.

Southwest CEO vows change as activist investor pushes for new leadership

0

A Southwest commercial airliner takes off from Las Vegas on Feb. 8, 2024.

Mike Blake | Reuters

Southwest Airlines CEO Bob Jordan said the company is ready to adapt to changing customer trends like premium seating as pressure from an activist investor mounts.

“We will adapt as our customers’ needs adapt,” Jordan said at an industry event hosted by Politico on Wednesday.

Jordan’s comments came two days after hedge fund Elliott Management disclosed a $1.9 billion stake in Southwest and said the carrier needs a new CEO and new chairman.

In April, Jordan told investors that the airline is considering major changes to its product, potentially ditching its system of unassigned seating that has made the Dallas-based carrier a standout among airlines, and even reevaluating its single class of service.

Jordan reiterated those considerations Wednesday, saying that the airline, which started flying in 1971 and now carries more passengers in the United States than any other, is in its “third generation.” He said the airline’s leaders are open to big shifts to increase revenue, while rivals like Delta and United capitalize on customers willing to pay up for a seat with more space or other perks.

Elliott didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment about Jordan’s remarks on Wednesday.

Southwest on Monday said in response to the activist campaign that its board backed the company’s leaders and the airline’s strategy, while it will also “look forward to further conversations with Elliott.”

Southwest has struggled with weaker margins than some of its competitors as it faces increased airline capacity in the U.S., shifting post-pandemic travel patterns and a spiraling problem that is out of its control: delays of new planes from Boeing, its sole aircraft provider, as that company grapples with several manufacturing and safety crises. The airline expects to receive just 20 Max jets from Boeing this year, down from an earlier forecast for close to 80 new planes.

Southwest had also taken months to find its footing after a year-end holiday meltdown in 2022 cost it more than $1 billion. The company later acknowledged its technology couldn’t handle the hundreds of flight and crew changes triggered by a winter storm, prompting it to quickly upgrade its system.

Meanwhile, Jordan said Southwest has continued to work toward improving the customer experience. It’s upgraded its inflight Wi-Fi and added power outlets on its fleet of Boeing 737s in recent years.

“I think customer preference is going beyond that,” Jordan said Wednesday. The carrier has spent months surveying customers to figure out what changes are needed, he added.

“It’s been several years since we last studied this in-depth, and customer preferences and expectations change over time,” an airline spokeswoman told CNBC. “We are also studying the operational and financial benefits of any potential change.”

Amid surging cruise ship illnesses, experts share ways to stay safe on the high seas

0

Nothing disrupts a cruise ship vacation like an outbreak of illness — but by taking proper preventative measures, you can help reduce the risk of seafaring sickness.

In the most recent report of cruise ship illness, approximately 25 passengers returning from a cruise started to feel sick with nausea toward the end of a flight last week.

“CDC is aware of a flight from Vancouver, British Columbia, which arrived at Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport on Friday, May 31,” the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said in an emailed statement shared with Fox News Digital about United Flight 1528.

“Public health officers from CDC’s Houston Port Health Station worked with EMS to evaluate ill passengers on board.”

Among the 163 passengers on the airplane, 75 were on the same cruise, according to multiple reports.

“As a precautionary measure, the aircraft will be removed from service and go through a deep cleaning before returning to service,” United Airlines told Fox News Digital in an emailed statement.

Most of the ill passengers reported mild gastrointestinal symptoms, the CDC noted, but none had a fever during the flight or upon physical exams.

CONSIDERING A CRUISE? HIGH SEAS MAY BE THE RIGHT OPTION FOR BOTH FAMILY AND WALLET

“No passengers met CDC criteria for further public health follow-up,” the CDC stated. “Passengers from the flight continued with their travel plans.”

Neither the CDC nor United Airlines specified which cruise line was involved.

The sick passengers may have taken a cruise on Royal Caribbean International’s Radiance of the Seas, as it was the only ship docked in Vancouver on the day of the flight, according to Cruise Radio, an organization that provides the latest cruise news.

The ship had a confirmed norovirus outbreak from April 8 to April 22, according to the CDC.

Additional cruise ship outbreaks

The CDC has reported seven outbreaks on cruise ships this year — including the Celebrity Summit by Celebrity Cruises, which sailed from May 24 to May 31.

Approximately 68 passengers and five crew members on that ship reported diarrhea and vomiting during the cruise.

AIRLINE OUTRAGE: PASSENGER REPORTEDLY TELLS MOM IN FIRST CLASS SHE SHOULDN’T BE THERE WITH A CHILD

Nearly all seven of the outbreaks were linked to norovirus, which historically has caused outbreaks of stomach pains and diarrhea on cruise ships.

The CDC Vessel Sanitation Program generally posts outbreaks that are of “public health significance.”

This typically includes voyages from the U.S. and foreign ports that are 3-21 days long with 100 or more passengers, with 3% or more of the passengers or crew reporting symptoms of gastrointestinal illness.

Common illnesses on cruise ships

The most common illnesses on cruise ships are respiratory illnesses, gastrointestinal infections and other vaccine-preventable diseases, according to the CDC.

Among the respiratory illnesses, some common culprits include colds, influenza and COVID-19.

“Ships have close living quarters and communal spaces, which allow bacteria and viruses to spread more easily.”

Gastrointestinal illnesses are highly contagious, the CDC warned.

Those can be caused by various germs, including bacteria, viruses or parasites, with the norovirus particularly well-known for causing stomach illness on ships.

Norovirus, often referred to as the stomach flu, usually causes symptoms of nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and stomach pain within 12 to 48 hours of exposure.

Some people may also experience headaches, body aches and fever.

People generally get better within several days, but they can still spread the infection several days after they feel well, according to the CDC.

Why are cruise ships susceptible to outbreaks?

“Ships have close living quarters and communal spaces, which allow bacteria and viruses to spread more easily,” Jill Blumenthal, M.D., infectious disease specialist at UC San Diego Health, told Fox News Digital.

“In addition, passengers are regularly joining [the cruise] at different stops, making it easier to introduce illness.”

Cruises may bring passengers to locations that put them at increased risk of infectious diseases like malaria, yellow fever, dengue fever, Zika, chikungunya and Lyme disease due to exposure to mosquito or tick bites, the CDC warned.

Travelers are also more susceptible to food-borne illnesses, which can easily be transmitted person-to-person on a cruise ship.

DRINKING ALCOHOL BEFORE SLEEPING ON A PLANE COULD BE DANGEROUS, STUDY SUGGESTS

“Food-handling practices and water systems aboard certain vessels may have the potential for transmission of foodborne and waterborne diseases,” Blumenthal said.

“Port visits can also expose travelers to local diseases, which they can bring back on board,” the doctor warned.

Passengers should consult a health care provider to discuss risks.

Approximately 12.5 million passengers traveled on cruises that began in North American ports in 2022, per the CDC.

Tips to prevent sickness on a cruise

The CDC recommends that people ask about COVID-19 testing or vaccination protocols before traveling — and to consider wearing a mask in crowded or poorly ventilated areas.

Prior to taking a cruise, passengers should consult a health care provider to discuss risks, vaccinations and other prevention strategies, as well as any medications to help prevent illness, said Blumenthal.

This is particularly important for those who have chronic health conditions or who are immunocompromised, elderly or pregnant, the doctor said.

When traveling to locations where insect-borne infections are prevalent, the CDC recommends using EPA-registered insect repellent, like DEET.

It is also important to use appropriate cough etiquette and to seek care from the ship’s medical staff in the event of illness.

Travelers should also be aware of any non-infectious conditions prior to embarking on a voyage, Blumenthal added.

Some people are prone to seasickness or motion sickness, including those who are taking certain medications, such as birth control pills, antidepressants or painkillers, the CDC noted on its website.
