Owner of popular Australian restaurant Rashays hits back at microwaved food rumours

0

The eccentric owner of a popular casual dining restaurant chain has hit back at rumours that his food is frozen and cooked in a microwave.

Rami Ykmour, owner of Rashays, posted a video to social media on Monday in which he ranted about the rumours that he called “slander”.

In the heated video, Ykmour walked around the kitchen of one of his restaurants, pointing out features that seemingly proved there was no way his food could be frozen.

“Is this cooked in a microwave?” Ykmour said while pointing at something cooking on a grill.

Pointing to another grill, he said: “You can feel the heat, can you see the steam?”

“Why do I need a (deep) fryer if I need a microwave? Why would I need those pans if I was cooking in a microwave? What for?

“I’m sick of it and yes, I am angry.

“Wake up guys, stop listening to the BS.”

The video was discussed on Reddit, where several former employees claimed the microwave rumours were true.

One went so far as to describe the kitchen at Rashays as a “glorified microwave”.

“As someone who worked at Rashays, half the food, the sauces, the vegetables, the meats, it all gets delivered packaged and opened up,” they said.

Another former employee backed up the claim, saying: “Former employee here! Yes, frozen, pre-packaged and microwaved. Every section has a microwave, some even have two.”

“Crepes? Microwave. Pancake? Microwave. Any hot dessert? Microwave. Lasagne? It’s put into the microwave from frozen.”

Ykmour founded Rashays with his partner Shannon in 1998 and the pair opened their first restaurant in Liverpool, NSW.

The self-described family favourite restaurant offers dishes such as pizza, burgers, pasta, steak and seafood.

There are now 32 Rashays restaurants across NSW, VIC and QLD.

Helicopter carrying Iran’s President Raisi suffers a ‘crash landing’

0

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi looks on during a press conference concluding his appearance at the United Nations General Assembly, in New York City, U.S., September 20, 2023.

Shannon Stapleton | Reuters

A helicopter with Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi on board suffered a “crash landing” on Sunday, state media reported, with weather conditions complicating rescue efforts.

Raisi’s condition was unclear, according to state news reports, which also aired prayers for his safety.

At least 20 rescue teams, including drones and search dogs, have been deployed, but harsh weather and heavy fog in the area were making it difficult for them to reach the site, state media added.

Iran’s foreign minister, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, was also traveling in the helicopter, along with East Azerbaijan’s governor, Malik Rahmati, and Raisi’s security detail, it said. State TV IRIB said the helicopter belonged to the Iranian Red Crescent, which Iran’s Interior Minister Ahmad Vahidi said was part of a larger convoy. Their condition was also unknown.

“Various rescue groups are moving towards the site, but due to the fog and bad weather, it may take time to reach the area,” Vahidi said in comments aired on state media.

The officials were returning from the border with the country of Azerbaijan — in the northwest of the country, some 375 miles from the capital of Tehran — where Raisi was inaugurating a dam on the Aras river with Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev. Initially, reports put the incident near the city of Jolfa, but later said it was farther east near the village of Uzi. Details remain contradictory.

State media showed Red Crescent rescuers moving through a dense fog with only a few meters of visibility, and said the helicopter is believed to have crashed in a rural forest.

The Qiz Qalasi Dam is the third dam jointly built by Iran and neighboring Azerbaijan and took almost two decades to complete, according to state media.

While Iran flies a range of helicopters, international sanctions have made it difficult for Tehran to obtain the required parts for them. Most of the helicopters operated by the military date back to before the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Raisi, 63, is himself under sanctions by the U.S. over his involvement in the mass execution of thousands of political prisoners in 1988 at the end of the bloody Iran-Iraq war.

He was re-elected in 2021, during an election that saw the lowest turnout in the Islamic Republic’s history. A hard-liner, Raisi formerly led the country’s judiciary and is viewed as a protégé of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Although Raisi is the elected president and leads the government, he still answers to Khamenei, who serves as the head of state.

The death of Mahsa Amini in police custody two years ago triggered a wave of protests across the country that mushroomed into the largest challenge to the theocratic regime since its founding in 1979. The government rounded up protesters in a violent crackdown that killed hundreds of people.

In an interview with NBC News last year, Raisi defended the government’s response, warning that those who try to sow instability in the Islamic Republic would pay a “big cost.”

Under Raisi, Iran now enriches uranium at nearly weapons-grade levels and hampers international inspections. Iran has armed Russia in its war on Ukraine, as well as launched a massive drone-and-missile attack on Israel amid its war against Hamas in the Gaza Strip. It also has continued arming proxy groups in the Middle East including Yemen’s Houthi rebels and Lebanon’s Hezbollah.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.

‘My skin felt smoother and brighter’: Shoppers in their 50s rave about this vitamin C serum — and it’s on sale for $12

0

You’re double cleansing, moisturizing and wearing SPF, but do you have vitamin C in your skincare routine? If you’re having trouble with any of those pesky scourges, it might be time to add the popular elixir to your rotation. This one from Tree of Life brightens and leaves skin looking youthful with just a few drops.

Amazon

Smooth lines, minimize the appearance of pores and brighten skin with a few drops of this potent elixir.

$12 at Amazon

Quality skin care products can cost a pretty penny — we’ve tested and picked out the best vitamin C serums which have price tags of up to $84, but if you’re new to this game, at just $12 with tens of thousands of five-star ratings, this one is a total steal.

Vitamin C is an antioxidant that reduces damage from free radicals, which are known for accelerating signs of aging. It also helps to stimulate collagen to keep skin looking youthful and plump. But the most common benefit is that it brightens the complexion overall and fades dark spots and hyperpigmentation.

This serum is also packed with other dermatologist-tested ingredients, like organic aloe and jojoba for moisturizing, and witch hazel, which minimizes the appearance of pores. The formula’s stellar combination leaves skin hydrated and dewy — sans a greasy finish.

Whether you’re fresh-faced or fighting the ravages of time, this vitamin C serum should be part of your restorative regimen. (Amazon)

Over 22,000 five-star customers rave about the serum’s benefits for the skin.

“It’s magic!” one serum user exclaimed. “My skin felt smoother and brighter after just one use, and has continued to feel great after now a week of using this product.”

Even reviewers with mature skin turn to the serum for a restored complexion.

One shared: “This is the best-kept inexpensive secret. I use vitamin C serum, hyaluronic acid serum and the retinol serum from this company, and it is a bomb and so inexpensive! I have used expensive products, and they don’t work anywhere near as good as Tree of Life serums. I highly recommend this to anyone and especially people like me over 70. I look like I’m in my 50s.”

“I have been using this for just about a week and already notice so much of a difference,” another shopper wrote. “I am almost 50 and have a lot of sun damage … mostly to my chest area. Wrinkled and crepey, this has made a huge difference in a week! I will definitely be getting more. Maybe by the gallon? Lol.”

“My acne spots go away faster and my face looks brighter. I have sensitive skin, and this product does not irritate me at all,” wrote another fan. “Doesn’t smell amazing, but I’m glad it doesn’t have added fragrance, since that tends to irritate my skin. Overall I definitely recommend!”

“I have been using it for just over a week, and can truly say that my skin is very soft and even a little plumper,” a rave reviewer wrote, adding: “It’s thicker, so it takes a bit longer to dry upon contact. Also, it’s sticky. Unless I put a moisturizer on after application to mask the stickiness it’s a little yuck to touch.”

Amazon

Vitamin C is great for applying in the morning, and at night? How about this highly rated retinol serum, which also happens to be on sale?

This multi-tasking product will help fade fine lines and wrinkles, lighten dark spots, plump and hydrate skin and make large pores appear smaller.

“I have been using this for just under 30 days now, that’s why I waited to do a review. I wanted to give it a real honest chance. I do find that it has made a difference in my complexion. The lines around my mouth and crow’s feet have diminished, as well as the very fine lines on my forehead. I am super, super happy. I have been converted. This will be my new staple in my beauty regimen,” wrote a satisfied shopper.

A museum in Missouri recently broke a Guinness World Record for hosting the world’s largest gathering of people with underwear on their head.

The City Museum in St. Louis, Missouri, wanted to commemorate “314 Day” this year with flair.

As a nod to its town’s area code, 314, the museum hosted an event on March 14 and decided to shoot for the stars by trying to achieve yet another Guinness World Record title.

JOHN WAYNE’S LIFELONG LEADING ROLE AS AMERICAN PATRIOT CELEBRATED AT FORT WORTH MUSEUM

The museum, known for being a “quirky, artist-built playground,” set out to bring in 314 people to gather and wear underwear on their heads for one minute, as Katy Enrique, director of sales and marketing at the museum, told Fox News Digital.

Before this attempt, the museum already held four other Guinness World Records: World’s Largest Pencil at 76 feet long, World’s Largest Seesaw at 82 feet long, World’s Largest Tennis Racket and World’s Tallest Man.

“City Museum also touts that it owns the World’s Largest Pair of Underwear, which famously hangs in our Beatnik Bob’s Café,” she added, noting where the inspiration for this new world record attempt originated.

“The giant underwear is an icon that guests try to find on their journey, and they take tons of photos with the underwear,” she said.

JOHN AND ANNIE GLENN HOUSE ROOTS OF LIFE, AND LOVE, THAT REACHED FOR THE STARS

Guinness World Records noted that the giant underwear on display at the museum was created in 1996 by St. Louis-based artists Pat Eby and Ann Paidrick — that it has a 16-foot waistband.

The underpants are not officially the world’s largest, however — as that Guinness World Record title is currently held by Cottonil in Egypt with an 82-foot waistband.

The museum was also hosting a traveling exhibit called the “Science of Guinness World Records” earlier this year. It explored “the science behind how people achieve these Guinness World Records,” Enrique explained.

Sure enough, on March 14, the museum did officially achieve another Guinness World Record title for hosting the world’s largest gathering of people with underwear on their heads with 355 participants at the unique event.

CALIFORNIA WOMAN SETS GUINNESS WORLD RECORD FOR ‘LONGEST ARM HAIR’: ‘AMAZING AND HILARIOUS’

With a motto of encouraging people to “explore, crawl, slide, climb on, swing on and simply get lost in the museum,” Enrique said this Guinness World Record attempt was right up their alley.

“We take great joy in that achievement and proudly display the 355 pairs of underwear in Beatnik Bob’s right next to the giant underwear that sparked the idea,” she said.

The museum also holds the Guinness World Record for the largest pair of underwear, which is displayed in the building. (City Museum)

After opening in 1997, the City Museum has turned from a passion project to a place for adventure-seekers with indoor, outdoor and underground playgrounds.

Young couple who bought land in Sydney’s newest suburb tell of ‘disheartening’ housing market

0

“A battle”, “overwhelming” and “disheartening”.

That’s how young couple Nick Farmer and Carly Miller have described their journey to clinching a slice of land to call their own.

WATCH THE VIDEO ABOVE: Prospective homebuyers snap up plots of Sydney’s newest suburb.

But having purchased a plot of Sydney’s newest suburb — Orchard Hills North — a two-year wait begins for them to get the keys to their yet-to-be-built house.

“Now we look to the future to see what we can do, which was great,” Farmer told 7NEWS.

The couple have been among the thousands of people vying to purchase vacant land in the suburb located near central Penrith and about 50km from the Sydney CBD.

More than 1200 homes are being built in Orchard Hills North, which will also be close to Western Sydney’s new airport.

“My family’s been in this area almost since I was born, so 30 years. I’ve been around this area as well, so it’s been great to see the community grow and expand,” Farmer said.

“The playing fields in the area, so sports and rec wise, it’s grown as well.

“Also with the Western Sydney airport going in, the new metro line as well, the access to the motorway, it’s just all great.”

Matthew Hyder, chief executive of the suburb’s developer Legacy Property, said the community will provide an “opportunity for affordable quality living”, particularly those wanting “a detached home in a new, beautiful community”.

He said the company had sold 15 lots during Saturday morning, after about 2000 people had attended their sales centre the previous weekend.

“I think it’s a real reflection of what we’re seeing in Western Sydney … Western Sydney is really a community where people want to live,” he said.

Farmer said he and Miller were “quite lucky” to get their plot.

“We’d seen this come up and we might as well see what it’s like. It’s a great area, so we just came and put down an expression of interest for the first release,” he said.

“We were invited back today to potentially get land and we were successful.”

The couple had been looking for a home for more than six months, with Farmer describing the sight of “another 60 couples” at open homes as “overwhelming”.

“(It’s) disheartening at the same time, because you feel like there’s so much competition,” Miller added.

“You don’t feel like you have a chance, because there are so many people there.

“It feels like more of a battle … It’s tough.”

DIBAOLONG

Loose and lightweight, these breezy cropped pants have an elastic waistband with a drawstring and feature two large side pockets.

$22 at Amazon

Normally, these extra-comfy lounge pants go for $56, but right now, you can score them for nearly 60% off! Available in 14 colors including Apricot, Royal Blue and Plum (prices vary slightly by color), you might want to snag a few while they’re still in stock. Sizes range from S to 4XL.

Women wearing black, white and maroon capri pants.

Nearly 5,000 shoppers give these comfy pants a five-star rating. (Amazon)

Over 5,000 shoppers rave about how luxuriously soft and comfy these pants are — and they’re buying them up for a variety of reasons.

Pros 👍

“If you have skin sensitivities like me and require extra soft clothes, you’ve hit the jackpot,” shared a rave reviewer. “These pants, despite being super comfy, look very fancy too! The open leg at the bottom is perfect for my overly muscular calves. The top of it is stretchy in a gentle way so that it doesn’t apply too much pressure. I also have EDS and fibromyalgia and need clothes that are easy to put on and off.”

“Nice comfy pants,” shared another. “They are exactly what I wanted. Fit is perfect and maybe a little big but still good enough. They almost have a lounge-wear feel to the fabric but heavier. Very comfortable and look nice on and are good quality for the price.”

“Bought many pair assorted colors of these pants for easy access to my knee bandages after knee replacement surgery,” wrote another five-star reporter. “They are perfect. Even slept in them many times while re-cooperating. Size is generous. The stretchy lightweight fabric is super comfortable. Machine wash & air dry wrinkle-free. Easy elastic pull-up with a tie waist.”

“My mother is 68 and is a woman of comfort,” a final fan wrote. “She is modest but does not like long dresses. These are her Summer pants, because they are soft, loose fitting without being frumpy, and they have pockets.”

Cons 👎

Fans of these capri pants have a few suggestions.

“These capris were just what I needed,” shared a fan. “They are soooo comfortable. The only caveat, is I am 5’2″ tall and these are for a person who is 5’8″. I wish they came in a short length.”

It’s probably my favorite pants to wear both at home and outside,” shared another reviewer. “The fabric is thick and soft. It’s been holding up well too. My only issue is that the pockets are shaped a bit strangely and stick out, but it’s not too big a deal.”

These roomy, buttery-soft pants are available in 14 different colors and come in sizes S to 4XL.

1. Sunscreen

Be sure to find a spot for sunscreen in your backpack. You’re going to be spending the whole day, possibly multiple days, in the hot summer sun.

Even if you put on sunscreen in the morning before you go, you’ll want to reapply throughout the day to ensure your skin doesn’t burn.

Burnt shoulders will quickly make your day painful. If you don’t have enough room in your bag for a full-sized bottle, you can always get a travel size instead.

2. Sunglasses

Sunglasses are essential for a day at the theme park. You’ll be spending the whole day outside, often stuck directly in the sun while waiting in line.

HOW TO WEAR SUNSCREEN THE RIGHT WAY: YOUR GUIDE TO SPF

Just make sure not to leave your sunglasses on or on top of your head once you get on the ride, or else you’ll likely lose them once it takes off.

The best place to keep your sunglasses while you ride is safely tucked away in your bag or secured in a closed pocket.

3. Mini portable fan

When you’re walking around with the heat surrounding you, a mini portable fan is going to save the day.

You can even get one that you wear around your neck if you don’t want to hold it.

These fans are a perfect way to enjoy nice cool air as you make your way from ride to ride.

4. Water bottle

It’s so important to stay hydrated while you are at an amusement park.

Collapsible water bottles are perhaps the best way to go, as they take up very little space in your bag.

Buying water at the parks is very expensive, so having your own bottle to refill will save you lots of money.

Many amusement parks also offer guests souvenir cups that you can refill with your favorite soft drinks throughout the day.

These are a great option for a practical souvenir you can take home with you.

5. Slim wallet

You’ll want to have your license, credit card and some cash with you while at an amusement park, but a bulky wallet is less than ideal.

Find something slim that can slip into your bag with ease and fit only the essentials.

Amazon is full of slim wallets you can choose from for your travels.

6. Snacks

Hungry children (and adults) are no fun at amusement parks. Let’s face it, snacks at amusement parks are costly and can add a large expense to your vacation bill.

Granola bars, trail mix and fruit strips are great snacks to pack in your bag. Think of things like those that are small and that won’t get crushed in your backpack.

Before packing your snacks, make sure to check the food policy of the theme park you are visiting to make sure you won’t have to dump any of your food upon entry.

7. Hand sanitizer

Amusement parks are dirty places — so hand sanitizer is a must-have, especially before snacking.

Railings and lap bars on coasters are hot spots for germs, among many other places.

Make sure you have hand sanitizer and maybe even wet wipes with you to keep your hands clean throughout the day.

8. Lip balm

Chapped lips are not fun. This is such a small, easy item to add to your bag.

Make sure you have lip balm with SPF for extra sun protection.

9. Hair clips and bands

Your hair is bound to be wind blown after a roller-coaster ride. Pack plenty of extra hairbands and clips. That way, you can tie up your hair quickly before you ride to avoid inevitable knots and tangles from leaving it down.

You’re also probably going to want to tie up your hair after a few hours in the sun.

10. Band-Aids

Accidents happen. If they do, you’ll be prepared with Band-Aids packed neatly in your bag.

Blisters are common at amusement parks from walking around all day long.

Putting a Band-Aid over any blisters that form will keep you going through the day comfortably.

Additional helpful items

  1. Individually wrapped ponchos
  2. Portable phone charger
  3. Sweatshirt
  4. Waterproof phone case
  5. Extra pair of socks
  6. Travel-sized deodorant
  7. Hat
  8. Plastic bags
  9. Motion sickness remedies
  10. Cooling towel

1. Individually wrapped ponchos

Check the weather forecast before you head to the park. If there’s rain in the forecast, you’re going to want a poncho.

Regular ponchos can take up a lot of space, but an individually wrapped poncho is slim and easy to fit into your bag.

Even if it’s not going to rain, these are helpful to have on water rides, so your clothes don’t get soaked.

2. Portable phone charger

This isn’t an absolute necessity, as your phone battery is likely to be strong enough to last you the whole day. But, if you are an avid phone user, or your device has a short battery life, a portable phone charger is good to have.

5 TIPS FOR FAMILY TRAVEL THAT COULD MAKE THE EXPERIENCE HAPPIER, HEALTHIER AND MUCH MORE MEMORABLE

There are lots of portable phone chargers that plug directly into your phone without any pesky cords needed. These are great space savers, and you can also easily use your phone while it charges.

3. Sweatshirt

A sweatshirt isn’t a necessity, since most likely, it’ll be hot most of the day. Consider bringing a sweatshirt only if you plan on staying in the park late, as the temperature will cool as the sun goes down.

These are going to take up a lot of space, so if you’re willing, it may just be easier to purchase a sweatshirt from the gift shop if you get cold at night.

4. Waterproof phone case

If you’re going to be visiting a water park during your travels, a waterproof phone case is going to come in handy.

One of the best you can get is a clear pouch that you simply place your phone in and secure shut. These come with a lanyard, so you can wear your phone around your neck as you move about.

THE BIGGEST US THEME PARKS IN EVERY REGION

These cases allow you to still see and use your phone while it’s secure. These pouches float in the water, so if your phone comes off your neck, you’ll very easily be able to spot it.

This may not be something you think to pack, but you’ll be glad that you did.

There are a few different reasons why a fresh pair of socks can come in handy. The first is if you go on any water rides during your day in the park, such as a flume ride.

If you’re wearing socks and sneakers, and they get wet after a water ride, you’re in for an uncomfortable rest of the day. Having an extra pair of socks to change into will make you a bit more comfortable.

Also, while walking around in hot temperatures, you’re bound to get a little sweaty. Changing your socks at the halfway point of the day can help you feel (and smell) clean.

6. Travel-sized deodorant

Speaking of smelling clean, a travel-sized deodorant can be a lifesaver when you are feeling sweaty at an amusement park.

Swipe a little deodorant on and you’ll feel brand new.

7. Hat

To avoid a hot scalp and the sun beaming in your eyes, keep a hat in your bag.

This also helps keep the hair out of your face throughout the day, while also hiding your coaster hair.

A bucket hat is a great option to have in your bag, since you can fold it up nice and small. You can also clip a baseball hat right onto your bag to save space.

8. Plastic bags

Plastic bags are a multi-use item that can be extremely helpful at amusement parks.

If you get a snack, like popcorn, that you don’t finish in one sitting, don’t throw it away. Instead, put the remainder in a plastic bag so you can snack on it later.

Plastic bags are also a great holder of cash, coins and credit cards if you don’t want to bring a wallet with you.

9. Motion sickness remedies

Just in case anyone you are traveling with gets motion sickness from all the rides, having some remedies packed with you isn’t a bad idea.

Dramamine, motion sickness patches or bracelets are all options.

10. Cooling towel

This is definitely not a necessity and more of a helpful tool.

Placing a cooling towel around your neck can fill you with relief from hot temperatures.

These usually come in a tube or bag, so you can put the wet towel right back in its container before placing it in your backpack to prevent all your other items from getting wet.

Remote workers seem to have lots of perks these days, including a commute-less job, a favorable work-life balance and the ability to save on a business wardrobe and other previously needed requirements for jobs.

But beyond saving time and money in a remote arrangement, some workers are finding new ways to stretch the work-at-home privilege by taking days off without officially clearing their paid time off as vacation days

The “hush-cation” trend may seem amusing to some — but the consequences of this deceptive practice can have a lasting impact.

Here’s a deeper dive into the “hush cation” trend.

What exactly is a ‘hush-cation’?

“Hush-cations” have been trending across social media and in popular culture.

“People are often bending the rules by continuing to work remotely as agreed upon, but not from the remote location their boss expects them to be,” said Smriti Joshi, chief psychologist with Wysa in Boston.

The phenomenon of “hush-cations” wasn’t “feasible prior to the onset of fully remote jobs [and] is presenting a new challenge for employers” today, said one workplace expert.  (iStock)

“This phenomenon, not feasible prior to the onset of fully remote jobs, is presenting a new challenge for employers and is also quite telling of what employees are feeling they need right now.”

What has led to the trend of ‘hush-cations’?

It’s a desire for autonomy, flexibility and control over their work environment, combined with a need to feel safe while asking for time off, that is leading to trends like this, Joshi told Fox News Digital.

“There’s a pervasive sense that the freedoms of working flexibly could soon be diminished.”

“Especially as many large organizations have begun to call workers back into the office, there’s a pervasive sense that the freedoms of working flexibly could soon be diminished,” she noted.

To that point, Joshi said employees feel passionately about their right to work under their terms and see where they work as a decision they should have control over.

WHY THE VIRAL TREND ‘CHRONOWORKING’ IS MAKING WAVES AMONG EMPLOYEES AND EMPLOYERS

“Hush-cations in that sense may be a way of quietly battling back against their employer, or attempting to assert that control back to themselves,” she said.

Lauren, 29, a graphic designer in Florida, told Fox News Digital that she’s taken “hush vacation” days here and there, but is still contemplating whether she’s going to come clean to her employer about her upcoming trip plans

“In July, I plan to take a few long weekends and I don’t think I am going to use official vacation days. Since I work from home, or anywhere else, I feel like as long as I do my job I can bank my vacation days until I want to officially use them.” (iStock)

“I have taken a day off to move a friend or for a mental health day, and didn’t tell my boss that I was really off,” said Lauren, who has chosen to use her first name only for privacy reasons.

“In July, I plan to take a few long weekends and I don’t think I am going to use official vacation days. Since I work from home, or anywhere else, I feel like as long as I do my job I can bank my vacation days until I want to officially use them.”

Is burnout causing ‘hush-cations’?

A lot of today’s career trends, including hush-cations, quiet quitting and other buzzy concepts, said Joshi, tie back to a similar issue: Employees are stressed out.

ANXIETY IS BIGGEST CONCERN AMONG EMPLOYEES SEEKING MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES, STUDY FINDS: ‘MAJOR CONCERN’

“They’re looking for ways to relieve the pressure they’re feeling at work and at times are getting pretty creative with how to do that,” Joshi told Fox News Digital.

“These trends underscore the need for organizations to prioritize mental health and well-being initiatives, challenging the stigma surrounding discussions about mental health in the workplace.”

What else is fueling the trend?

Rosencrans said it’s all about the attention paid on social media.

“They’re looking for ways to relieve the pressure they’re feeling at work and at times are getting pretty creative with how to do that.”

“As we’ve seen with other workplace trends like this, once it starts getting talked about, the more it inspires others to follow suit,” she said.

JOB CHALLENGE: SO YOU’RE OVERWHELMED AT WORK. HERE ARE STEPS TO TAKE

“Especially with the summer coming up, I anticipate we’ll see an uptick in hush-cations with people wanting to take advantage of warmer weather while conserving vacation days for other peak seasons like Thanksgiving and Christmas.”

“I plan to use my two-week official vacation for a trip to later in the year,” one worker confided. “I don’t feel bad about doing this, as many people take sick days off when they aren’t really sick.” (iStock)

To that point, Lauren, the “hush-cationer,” shared that in addition to non-reported summer escapes, she has other PTO dupe plans regarding banking her vacation days for later in the year.

“I plan to use my two-week official vacation for a trip to later in the year,” she confided.

“I don’t feel bad about doing this, as many people take sick days off when they aren’t really sick. This is a new version of an old hooky tactic.”

What should employers do if they find out about a hush-cation?

If managers find out someone on their team took PTO and didn’t officially take off, the manager should speak to the employee for clarification, experts advise.

“Seeing how an employee responds is important, as it can indicate whether this is a pattern, a mistake or an intentional move to take extra time off.”

A first step is to ask an employee directly what they were doing on the days in question, and explain it was brought to their attention that the person was not working but was instead on vacation, said Annie Rosencrans, people & culture director, Americas at HiBob in New York.

Following that, Rosencrans said managers can note they are aware of the time off taken, remind the employees of the time-off policy, and make sure it is added to the company’s system as PTO.
