Emirates’ chairman has a message for Boeing: ‘Get your act together’

'Get your act together,' Emirates chairman says on Boeing crisis

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — One of Boeing‘s biggest customers issued a call to action to its new management team, expressing frustration with the safety crisis facing the American planemaker and the consequent delays in order deliveries.

“We’re not happy really with what’s going on, we always really wanted to see this aircraft entering the fleet when it had been promised — and there is a delay, it’s not only to us,” Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, chairman and CEO of Dubai’s flagship Emirates airline, told CNBC’s Dan Murphy on Tuesday at the Arabian Travel Market in Dubai.

With 245 passenger planes and five 778 freighters on order, Emirates is Boeing’s largest customer in terms of widebody jets. But aircraft deliveries by the manufacturer dropped in the first quarter of 2024 to the lowest number since mid-2021 as the company deals with increased scrutiny after a door plug blew out from one of its 737 Max 9 planes midair in January.

The company delivered 83 planes in the three months to March 31 — most of them narrowbody 737s — compared to 157 in the prior quarter and 130 planes in the year-earlier period.

Al Maktoum, who sits at the helm of the world’s largest long-haul airline and helped launch it in 1985, echoed the sentiments of many other airline CEOs when it comes to expectations of Boeing.

“I think they have to put a lot of pressure in order to make sure that they deliver to the customer whatever they promised,” he said.

Asked if he had a message for the planemaker, Al Maktoum said: “I always say, you know, get your act together and just do it. And I think they can do it.”

CNBC has contacted Boeing for comment.

The chairman did not indicate that Emirates would cancel the Boeing orders or move them to its French rival, Airbus.

“No, no — I won’t be able to say exactly what we are planning,” he replied when asked about the likelihood of such a move. “But I think you see that we are refurbishing a big number of aircraft within the existing fleet … And there will be no shortage within Dubai capacity.”

He cited the airline’s extension of part of its existing fleet, including the mammoth double-decker Airbus A380s, as helping provide sufficient passenger capacity.

The fuselage plug area of Alaska Airlines Flight 1282 Boeing 737-9 MAX, which was forced to make an emergency landing with a gap in the fuselage, is seen during its investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) in Portland, Oregon, U.S. January 7, 2024.

The recently-appointed new management team at Boeing is now tasked with navigating the company’s worst crisis since 2018-2019, during which time two of its new 737 Max jets crashed within a period of six months, killing 346 people.

Following the Alaska Airlines door blowout in January, the Federal Aviation Administration’s six-week audit of Boeing and Spirit AeroSystems “found multiple instances where the companies allegedly failed to comply with manufacturing quality control requirements,” according to an FAA release published March 4.

“The FAA identified non-compliance issues in Boeing’s manufacturing process control, parts handling and storage, and product control,” it said. The regulatory agency said it informed Boeing’s leadership that it “must address the audit’s findings as part of its comprehensive corrective action plan to fix systemic quality-control issues,” and address its “safety culture.”

In a previous statement cited by CNBC, a Boeing spokesperson said in response to the FAA findings that the company continues “to implement immediate changes and develop a comprehensive action plan to strengthen safety and quality.”

The company’s website says it continues to support the U.S. NTSB and FAA investigations of the Jan. 5 accident.”

Tax time in Australia: ATO reveals three common mistakes that could cost you

0

As tax time fast approaches, the three big ticket items in the ATO’s sights have been revealed.

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) this week announced it would be cracking down on taxpayers who incorrectly claimed work-related expenses, inflated claims for rental properties and failed to include all income when lodging.

These are among the most common mistakes taxpayers make — and while they are often genuine, sometimes they are deliberate, the ATO said.

Last year, the tax office changed the way taxpayers claimed working-from-home deductions when it abolished the $0.80/hour “shortcut” rate and the $0.52/hour fixed rate to calculate deductions from July 1, 2022 in favour of a new fixed rate of $0.67/hour.

The changes came with tighter record-keeping requirements and broadened the items included in the rate.

In 2023, more than eight million people claimed a work-related deduction, and about half of those claimed a deduction related to working from home.

With last year’s changes in full effect this financial year, the ATO is warning taxpayers to ensure they have comprehensive records to back up their claims.

This means using records, such as a spreadsheet or calendar, to prove the hours worked from home, and keeping bills to prove the additional costs incurred from doing such.

“Deductions for working from home expenses can be calculated using the actual cost or the fixed rate method, and keeping good records gives you the flexibility to use the method that works for you, and claim the expenses you are entitled to,” ATO assistant commissioner Rob Thomson said.

“Copying and pasting your working from home claim from last year may be tempting, but this will likely mean we will be contacting you for a ‘please explain’.”

The ATO’s golden rules for claiming a work-related deduction

  • You must have spent the money yourself and were not reimbursed,
  • the expense must directly relate to earning your income, and
  • you must have a record to prove it.

Rental properties also remain a hot topic for the tax office, with its data revealing nine out of 10 rental property owners get their income tax returns wrong.

“We often see landlords making mistakes when it comes to repairs and maintenance deductions on rental properties, so we’re keeping a close eye on this,” Thomson said.

“This year, we’re particularly focused on claims that may have been inflated to offset increases in rental income to get a greater tax benefit.”

A common mistake rental property owners made last year was confusing general maintenance and capital expenses.

“You can claim an immediate deduction for general repairs like replacing damaged carpet or a broken window,” Thomson said.

“But if you rip out an old kitchen and put in a new and improved one, this is a capital improvement and is only deductible over time as capital works.”

If in doubt, turn to a registered tax agent for assistance, Thomson said.

A waiting game

While many taxpayers may be keen to lodge their return as soon as possible, the tax office has warned against rushing in on July 1.

People who receive income from multiple sources need to wait until it is pre-filled before lodging.

For most people, this will automatically be pre-filled by the end of July, saving them time and helping them get their return correct.

“We see lots of mistakes in July where people have forgotten to include interest from banks, dividend income, payments from other government agencies and private health insurers,” Thomson said.

“By lodging in early July, you are doubling your chances of having your tax return flagged as incorrect by the ATO.

“We know some prefer to tick their tax return off the to-do list early and not have to think about it for another 12 months, but the best way to ensure you get it right is to wait for just a few weeks to lodge.”

Manga Tech Startup Orange, Inc. Raises JPY 2.9B (USD 19.5M) in Pre-Series A Financing

Entertainment technology company accelerates its mission: “Creating a world where everyone enjoys manga.”

TOKYO, May 7, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — Orange, Inc., a manga localization technology company, today announced JPY 2.92 billion (approximately USD 19.5 million* ) fundraising in pre-series A financing.
*Exchange rate: USD 1 = JPY 150

Special manga “Let’s Go! Mr.Orange”

For full View: https://orange.inc/special

The financing round was led by Shogakukan, Globis Capital Partners, ANRI, SBI Investment, JIC Venture Growth Investments, Miyako Capital, Chiba Dojo Fund, Mizuho Capital, Mitsubishi UFJ Capital, and GFR Fund.

The funds will be used to develop a localization product based on deep learning models and to launch their digital manga store in the summer of 2024.

About the Global Manga Industry

Orange is an entertainment technology startup from Japan dedicated to the manga industry. The company leverages deep-learning technology to address significant global market opportunities and historical development challenges within the traditional production of the Japanese art form.

The global manga market has shown substantial growth, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10%, and is expected to reach USD 42.2 billion market in 2030 (Manga Market 2023 report by Grand View Research, Inc.). This traditional entertainment in Japan has evolved into a global IP industry, reflecting an expanding audience for manga and its adjacent industries, such as anime.

However, only a fraction of works—according to Orange’s research, approximately 2% of manga released annually in Japan—has been formally translated and made available in English, partly due to the difficult and lengthy translation process and the limited number of translators. Adding to this, the global piracy market for manga was $ 5.5 billion in 2022 (Content Overseas Distribution Association), which significantly harms the industry and the rights of wonderful creators and artists.

Orange’s Challenges

Orange is breaking through these issues by developing innovative technologies that enhance the capacity of localization and enable the worldwide simultaneous distribution of manga, working closely with several publishers.

Orange has been developing a manga-dedicated localization system since it was founded. It enables significant efficiencies in the localization process of manga by integrating cutting-edge computer vision and natural language processing technologies developed by a top-class deep learning engineering team.

Their proprietary system uses their localization operation process, enabling a capacity for Japanese-to-English localization of up to 500 manga volumes per month. This is 5x more than the current production capacity of the whole localization market, according to Orange’s estimates. Orange will also work on localizing manga into other languages, ensuring that manga fans across the world can enjoy manga in their native languages.

In the summer of 2024, the company will also launch a digital manga store named “emaqi” in the US. “emaqi” will include titles localized by Orange. It will feature recommendations suggested by AI technology and manga influencers to offer new and fun experiences to all manga fans in the US.

Goals and Vision

“Since we were founded in 2021, our vision has been to share ‘all manga’—the manga that has moved us and that we dearly love—in all languages across the globe,” said Shoko Ugaki, Founder and Chief Executive Officer. “Manga covers a wide and diverse variety of themes. Our goal is to foster a global society where manga is an everyday joy for everyone, from children to adults.”

These 5 NYC tourist sites prove lasting popularity of ‘Friends’ TV sitcom

0

“The Last One” aired on May 6, 2004.

Young adults around the world felt the loss.

It was the final episode of “Friends,” the wildly popular sitcom that portrayed the lives of six 20-somethings in search of love and meaning in New York City.

With humor and heartbreak, slapstick and sympathy, the TV series shared tales of Chandler (played by Matthew Perry), Joey (Matt LeBlanc), Monica (Courteney Cox), Rachel (Jennifer Aniston), Ross (David Schwimmer) and Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow).

“What has truly stood the test of time is its laugh-a-minute humor — a perfect storm of smart writing and flawless performances by the perfectly cast ensemble,” Australian Women’s Weekly reported last year following the death of Perry

His loss was mourned around the world, as the Aussie magazine attests.

A global fan base has made New York City the bucket-list destination for “Friends” fans from far and wide — even though the show was filmed at Warner Bros. Ranch in Burbank, California.

The Friends Experience also boasts “The One in Boston” and — coming soon — “The One in Miami.”

2. The apartment

The connection fans felt to “Friends” was proven in Oct. 2023, when Perry died after a struggle with addiction.

Fans flocked to the Greenwich Village apartment building at 90 Bedford St., whose facade served as the setting of the series.

Given the show’s setting in Manhattan, visitors naturally post pictures on social media boasting that they found the “Friends” fountain.

The group that manages Central Park has been forced to address the TV tourism controversy.

“Cherry Hill is still a popular destination for enjoying views of the lake and the cherries blooming in the spring,” the Central Park Conservancy writes online.

“Although the Cherry Hill Fountain looks similar, the fountain in the show was in fact filmed at a studio in Los Angeles.”

The skyscraper is a celebrity in its own right.

“This famous building has also featured in other TV shows and films,” reports GoCity.com, including “Sex & the City,” “Zoolander” and “Superman,” among others.

5. Ross’s museum

The popularity of “Friends” made Ross the world’s most famous paleontologist, working at the New York Museum of Prehistoric History.

The prehistoric museum does not exist.

The stately building that played the part was actually one of Manhattan’s most famous landmarks, the American Museum of Natural History along Central Park.

It was the setting for “Friends” moments as monumental as its architecture.

Reproductive health and super contribution boosts for parental leave for government workers

0

Queensland public servants will have 10 days’ reproductive health leave per year in an Australian-first initiative.

Queensland Premier Steven Miles has announced new entitlements for government workers providing days off for fertility treatments, chronic reproductive health conditions such as endometriosis and preventative screening for breast and prostate cancers.

Workers will also be granted leave for reproductive health treatments such as hysterectomies and vasectomies.

The scheme is set to be in place by the end of September.

The move has been welcomed by unions as a huge win for workers.

“Most of us have experienced, or will experience at some stage in our working lives, issues related to our reproductive health,” Queensland Unions General Secretary Jacqueline King said on Monday.

“Having access to leave and flexibility in work arrangements can make all the difference to help manage sometimes extremely personal issues in a work environment.”

Miles also announced changes to superannuation payments for government workers.

Public service workers who take unpaid maternity or paternity leave will have their super contributions paid for by the government for the duration of the 52 weeks of parental leave from July.

Superannuation is currently only paid to workers on paid parental leave.

Data from 2020-2021 found that the average superannuation balance gap between men and women in Queensland was 19.8 per cent, with only 13.9 per cent of Queensland women relying on their superannuation as their main source of retirement income.

“I don’t think it’s good enough that the primary caregiver, predominantly women, are disadvantaged at retirement,” the premier said.

“That’s why my government will begin to pay superannuation to those in the public sector on all parental leave, paid and unpaid, to ensure the ongoing economic security of new parents, especially women.”
