FAA will require more rest time for air traffic controllers amid fatigue concerns

The head of the Federal Aviation Administration on Friday said the agency will increase the required amount of rest time for air traffic controllers in response to concerns over fatigue amid a staffing shortage.

The changes, which would take effect within 90 days, would require controllers to have at least 10 hours of rest between shifts, up from nine hours, and 12 hours of rest before an overnight shift.

“In my first few months at the helm of the FAA, I toured air traffic control facilities around the country — and heard concerns about schedules that do not always allow controllers to get enough rest,” FAA Administrator Mike Whitaker said in a statement. “With the safety of our controllers and national airspace always top of mind for FAA, I took this very seriously — and we’re taking action.”

The changes come as pressure on the FAA grows to improve air travel safety amid a spate of close calls at airports, as well as mechanical problems at some airlines and production problems at Boeing.

A shortfall of air traffic controllers, made worse by a pause in hiring during the Covid-19 pandemic, has led to forced overtime and packed schedules for staff at some facilities. The agency hired 1,500 controllers last year and plans to hire 1,800 this year. Air traffic controllers in the U.S. are required to retire at age 56.

The announcement came alongside an FAA-ordered report on air traffic controller fatigue, which recommended the new rest requirements.

Zhou Guanyu Takes Center Stage at Shanghai F1 Grand Prix: A Thrilling Home Debut

0

SHANGHAI, April 19, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — On April 19th, during the Shanghai F1 Grand Prix, Zhou Guanyu made his eagerly awaited home debut at the Shanghai International Circuit. As China’s first and currently only F1 driver, Guanyu’s popularity rivals that of superstar drivers, and his presence at this event has garnered significant attention. The F1 Grand Prix – one of the world’s top three sporting events – returns to Shanghai after a five-year hiatus. This year also marks the 20th anniversary of the F1 Chinese Grand Prix. Shanghai has made extensive preparations for this event, and official tickets were immediately sold out upon release, confirming the event’s popularity among Chinese F1 fans.

The popularity of this once “niche” F1 race has surged in China, especially when Zhou Guanyu races in his hometown. As soon as the race was announced, it caused a stir on Chinese social media. As the only Chinese driver to qualify for Formula 1 thus far and the first Chinese driver ever to score on his Formula 1 debut, the opportunity to race in the Grand Prix in his hometown holds special meaning for the driver as well as the Chinese audience. Zhou Guanyu’s achievement marks a watershed moment in Chinese racing history, with a young Chinese face ranking among the 20 greatest drivers on the planet.

The first Chinese F1 driver has gained significant sway not only within China but also overseas. Every race Zhou Guanyu has competed in has seen many Chinese and foreign fans turn out in droves to support him. Undoubtedly, the influence of the rising Chinese star in the world arena is progressively growing with the return of the Chinese Grand Prix, a racing event with a huge global reach.

Since Zhou Guanyu became China’s first F1 driver, both F1 and his popularity in China have surged, and all connected content has become the center of attention. Zhou Guanyu’s debut in China behind the wheel of a C44 has attracted attention, particularly with the presence of Chinese sponsor AMBPOMIAL prominently displayed on the car.

AMBPOMIAL, launched by Yili Group, ranks No.1 among China’s high-end yogurt brands. With the dual distinction of being “first” in their fields, AMBPOMIAL and Zhou Guanyu began their story as early as 2022 when AMBPOMIAL officially announced Zhou Guanyu as the brand’s ambassador. Zhou Guanyu’s spirit of adventure, embodied in his early training abroad and competitive spirit in the world’s top-speed races, has enabled this young Chinese driver to break through all the way, set new records, and carve out his own legend on the racetrack. The partnership was a natural fit, with AMBPOMIAL’s brand innovation concepts being well-suited to Zhou Guanyu’s youthful, energetic, and adventurous persona.

AMBPOMIAL continues to make technological breakthroughs in the field of yogurt products. In 2023, it launched the industry’s first room-temperature yogurt with active probiotics. AMBPOMIAL’s innovation in the field of room-temperature probiotic yogurt has expanded the market for yogurt, mirroring its spokesperson Zhou Guanyu’s breakthrough from zero to one as a Chinese F1 driver.

With the race in full swing, F1 has become synonymous with Shanghai, transforming the city into a massive marketing platform. AMBPOMIAL launched an extensive marketing campaign for the event, including the launch of the co-branded product with Stake F1 Team KICK Sauber and a large-scale ticket giveaway campaign. These events received an overwhelming social media response, enticing many F1 fans and consumers to participate. This highly commercialized top-level race worldwide is gaining popularity among Chinese fans. Among them are avid fans who have ardently followed the race for decades, crossing numerous time zones to see the event live, as well as young viewers who are wildly passionate about F1. AMBPOMIAL has done an excellent job of extending the brand’s consumer base, reaching out to Chinese F1 fans, and getting closer to becoming a household name among younger consumers through a range of consumer activities.

As a leading brand in China’s yogurt industry, AMBPOMIAL’s foray into motorsports reflects its unique strategic vision, leading the way in sports advertising for the yogurt sector. AMBPOMIAL is also Stake F1 Team KICK Sauber’s sponsor, evidenced by the brand’s prominent placement on the C44 body and tires. By signing China’s first F1 driver, Zhou Guanyu, AMBPOMIAL is solidifying its brand influence in the motorsports industry, forging a closer bond with the younger consumer base, and promoting a new, healthier lifestyle.

As the Shanghai F1 Grand Prix unfolds, Zhou Guanyu’s adventurous journey continues. AMBPOMIAL and Zhou Guanyu epitomize the spirit of adventure, pushing boundaries and setting new “firsts” in their respective fields. AMBPOMIAL’s partnership with Zhou Guanyu enters its third year in 2024, while its partnership with Stake F1 Team KICK Sauber enters its sixth year, having begun in 2019 with the brand’s logo appearing on the team’s cars. We believe that by working together more closely, we can spread this spirit to more Chinese consumers. With increased attention and support, we believe that motorsports will also become more popular in China.

Intense Competition: Newcomers vs. Veterans

In line with past practices, the selection process for this year’s “Most Excellent Female Bosses” began at 0:00 on March 8th, involving all female merchants across zones 1 to 5 of Yiwu International Trade City, Huangyuan Clothing Market, and the production materials market. Since the start of voting, market operators have shown enthusiastic engagement, attracting a large number of participants competing for the awards.

Following a month of fierce competition, the winners have been announced for each award. Among the list of awardees, we find familiar names like Fu Jiangyan and Wang Xiaoqing, who have witnessed the continuous evolution of this event.

“Every year, I actively participate in this selection event. It provides an excellent platform for self-promotion, product promotion, and brand recognition. Additionally, it serves as a medium for exchange and mutual growth, enabling me to learn from others and broaden my horizons, thus driving the development of my business more effectively,” said Fu Jiangyan. She added that through this platform, she has gained recognition from both domestic and international buyers, making her company’s brand and herself the top choice for customer purchases.

Among the awardees, there are also several “new faces” on the list, including Liu Jianying, who has injected the “Most Excellent Female Bosses” event with new vitality.

“We are the primary manufacturer specializing in various adhesive products. With a high degree of outward orientation, our products are exported to regions including Europe, America, South America, and Southeast Asia. However, as they say, ‘even the finest wine needs a good market’. By participating in this selection event, we aim to enhance our brand recognition, and expand our presence in overseas markets, to create more business opportunities,” explained Liu Jianying. Despite being her first time participating in this competition, Liu Jianying expressed her surprise at the event’s ability to attract customers. She exclaimed, “Every day, we receive orders from customers who found us through Yiwugo.com. They not only support us but also cheer for us.”

It is due to the collective efforts of these “familiar faces” and “new faces” that breathe life into Yiwugo.com’s “Most Excellent Female Bosses” selection event, infusing it with endless charm and vitality. So far, this event has evolved into one of the foremost brand selection activities in the Yiwu market, capturing significant attention each spring.

Platform Elevates “She Power”

One of the distinctive characteristics of the Yiwu market lies in its division of labor: men oversee production while women manage retail. This silently agreed-upon arrangement, though informal, has proven to be highly pragmatic. It is this very model that provides female business owners with extensive space for career advancement and growth.

According to the latest statistics from Yiwugo.com, female merchants make up approximately 53% of the workforce in the Yiwu market. These “female bosses” continue to play an indispensable role in the market, serving as a driving force behind the ongoing growth and development of Yiwugo.com.

Since 2016, Yiwugo.com has consistently hosted the “Most Excellent Female Bosses” event, aimed at recognizing and promoting exceptional female business owners. This initiative seeks to spotlight the top-tier brands and products behind these female entrepreneurs, thereby fostering the indispensable “She Power” necessary for cultivating a thriving marketplace.

Up to now, this selection event has been held for nine consecutive years, identifying numerous outstanding female merchants. Through this initiative, they, along with their businesses and products, have garnered visibility and recognition among a broader audience. These female entrepreneurs stand as exemplary models of female innovation and entrepreneurship in the Yiwu market. Embracing opportunities for development, they stay grounded in their profession, nurture their primary ventures, explore and broaden their horizons, and represent the spirit of women in today’s entrepreneurial landscape.

“In the era of the digital economy, Yiwugo.com will continue to play a leading and driving role as a platform. Through initiatives like the ‘Most Excellent Female Bosses’ selection event, we aim to promote outstanding female entrepreneurs across all sectors of society, offering inspiration for the growth of more female merchants and the enterprises they represent. We are empowering ‘her’ and propelling their progress,” stated Wang Jianjun, General Manager of Yiwugo.com.

American Revolution began 249 years ago: Here are 5 overlooked tourist sites on fight for independence

0

The grand events and oft-told tales of the American Revolution are easy to find among sprawling reverent battlefields and national parks.

George Washington’s Mount Vernon in Virginia, Independence Hall in Pennsylvania, and Minuteman National Historical Park in Massachusetts, where the American rebellion exploded into deadly revolution 249 years ago today, April 19, 1775, top any list of highlights in the nation’s fight for independence.

But historical secrets, haunting reminders and the lingering traces of legend help tell a complete story of any event, even one as long and deeply chronicled as the American Revolution

MEET THE AMERICAN WHO NEVER FLINCHED IN THE FIGHT FOR INDEPENDENCE, ABIGAIL ADAMS

Here are 5 often overlooked sites that helped pave the way for American independence.

1. Bayley-Hazen Military Road, Vermont

Colonial troops invaded Quebec, Canada in the first winter of the American Revolution, with Benedict Arnold among its leaders.

Hundreds of his men died on the rough journey through the frozen New England wilderness.

A new road was needed to bring men and supplies to Canada – a mission that ultimately failed.

“Proposed and started in 1776 by Colonel Jacob Bayley, continued in 1779 and later abandoned by General Moses Hazen, the road — and what remains of it — extends from Wells River in a northwesterly direction to what is now known as Hazen’s Notch,” reports the website CrossVermont.org.

“Small details, historical markers, grave sites and monuments that still recall the events of long ago may escape the eye when barreling along in a car.”

The warpath carves a lane through some of the most rural parts of the Lower 48 states. It is best explored by bicycle, the website adds.

“Small details, historical markers, grave sites and monuments that still recall the events of long ago may escape the eye when barreling along in a car but will not be missed by bike.”

2. French Cemetery, Yorktown, Virginia

Fifty unknown soldiers of France who gave their lives for the cause of American liberté are buried near this Yorktown battlefield.

Among other lessons, the graves are reminders of 50 French mothers — 50 French families — who never knew the fate of their son, father or brother when he shipped overseas to fight the British in North America.

The 50 unknowns represent the 8,000-10,000 Frenchmen who fought at Yorktown, the final American victory in the war that forged the new United States

Those thousands of men, supported by 29 French warships, and paired with years of American resolve, forced the British to surrender and admit defeat at Yorktown in October 1781.

COLUMBIA’S FORMER PRESIDENT DWIGHT EISENHOWER WARNED THE WORLD WOULD FORGET WWII HORRORS AGAINST JEWS

Several other historical markers are within walking distance, including those for French Artillery Park and Washington’s headquarters, and a tribute to the leading French military officer in Virginia, Comte de Rochambeau.

3. Nathan Hale execution site, Manhattan, New York

“I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country,” Hale, just 21, reportedly uttered with stiff lip as he was hanged by the British for treason on Sept. 22, 1776 in Manhattan.

Dense urban development paved over the actual site of Hale’s death, but a bronze plaque visible from the sidewalk offers the only reminder of this seminal moment in patriotic defiance.

It’s located on Third Avenue, between East 65th and East 66th Streets, on the Upper East Side.

Little more than a photo-op stop, it offers an opportunity to explore some of the other interesting Revolutionary War sites in Manhattan — which was occupied by the British throughout most of the war.

Those interesting sites include the Alexander Hamilton Grange, a farmhouse in the middle of the city’s concrete caverns that the Founding Father built just before he was killed in a duel with Vice President Aaron Burr.

“I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country.”

Also, Fraunces Tavern is where George Washington delivered his farewell speech to his officers after the British final left New York City.

It’s a real tavern today that doubles as a museum of early American history.

4. Prison Ship Martyrs Monument, Brooklyn, New York

This powerful monument in a verdant park offers chilling testimony that American independence was purchased by patriots at the price of hideous human suffering.

The 150-foot-tall Doric column at Fort Greene Park towers over the footprint of a colonial garrison of the American Revolution.

It’s dedicated to the estimated 11,500 American soldiers, sailors and privateers who died in hellish conditions aboard British prison ships on the nearby East River during the fight for nationhood.

A number of these patriots are buried in a crypt beneath the monument — the identities of many known only to God.

“This is hallowed ground,” Brooklyn native and self-professed patriot Eddie Desmond told Fox News Digital.

5. Swamp Fox statue/Marion County Museum

Francis Marion, the legendary “Swamp Fox” of South Carolina, has fueled legend and tributes for nearly 250 years.

Inaugural ‘Korea Medical Innovation Research Forum’ regular seminar, a success

0
  • To be registered as an official research organization by the National Assembly Secretariat… Expected to become Korea’s leading medical think tank
  • Planning to initiate global multinational clinical projects in digital therapeutics
  • Establishing a future medical system centered around prevention and management… Expanding digital medical services

SEOUL, South Korea, April 19, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — Amid growing concerns about a medical crisis as a result of acute conflict between the government and the medical community due to an increase in the quota of medical school admission, the regular seminar of the Korea Medical Innovation Research Forum (KMIRF) kicked off; experts from various fields of the medical field gathered to prepare for future medical reform. It was held at Andaz Seoul Gangnam on the 17th of April.

First ‘Korea Medical Innovation Research Forum’ regular seminar
First ‘Korea Medical Innovation Research Forum’ regular seminar

KMIRF was launched last March by experts in various fields of the medical industry, and is co-represented by Dae Hee Kang, former dean of Seoul National University College of Medicine, current president of the Telemedicine Society, and Jong Yoon Lim, former chairman of the Bio Association, registered director of Hanmi Science and chairman of COREE Group.

Medical experts who serve as steering and working committee members of each division, including co-representatives Dae Hee Kang and Jong Yoon Lim, gathered and led a heated discussion for medical reform. In addition, the newly elected People Power Party Representatives Cheolsoo Ahn, Soomin Park, and Democratic Party Representative Do-geol Ahn (via video conference) attended and advocated the Forum at the National Assembly level.

Co-representative Jong Yoon Lim mentioned the urgency of addressing immediate medical reform in his opening speech and said, “Medical intellectual property rights belong to the country and the people, and in order to improve the country’s global competitiveness and future value in medicine, we need to go beyond Healthcare 4.0 and create a national and permanent proposition.” “We will definitely propose future medical innovation policies,” he said. “We plan to hold regular seminars for KMIRF at least six times a year and frequently put forward future medical innovation policies with the cooperation of experts and policymakers in each field.”

In his congratulatory address, Rep. Cheolsoo Ahn said, “The paradigm of health care has completely changed through COVID-19, and now, as part of medical reform, we need to establish a ‘future-oriented legal system’ that recognizes upcoming technological and social changes, and eliminates regulations that may become obstacles in advance.” He emphasized, “It is time to play a role in preparing ahead for the future,” and added, “I hope that KMIRF will be play a central role for this change.”

Co-representative Dae Hee Kang emphasized the importance and revitalization of digital healthcare and personalized preventive medicine through a presentation on the topic of ‘Future Medicine and Digital Healthcare’, as well as laying out the purpose and role in the establishment of KMIRF along with future goals. He also explained the operation plan and said, “We plan to register as an official research group within the National Assembly Secretariat and will fulfill our role as Korea’s representative medical think tank.” Industrial Division Director Mahn Soon Hwang gave a presentation on ‘Bio-Industry Trends’ and emphasized the importance of the country, companies, and investments for the development of the bio-ecosystem and medical reform.

In addition, a free discussion was commenced in relation to digital health, especially digital therapeutics, as with new therapeutics. It was suggested that regulatory bodies should be able to determine the price and fee structure that will compensate private companies for their enormous investment in clinical research at the time of approval, and came to a consensus that the tone should be set globally in which any country applying for clinical trials or regulatory approval should be adequately recompensed according to such profit structure logic. As the first step in accomplishing this vision, we have decided to pursue a project regarding multi-national digital therapeutics’ clinical trials around the world.

Hee Hwang, CEO of Kakao Healthcare, expressed his encouragement by saying that he deems it as a very timely strategy and said, “As a healthcare expert, I will utilize my expertise to help with the research group’s first project.”

Hong Taek Yong, a professor at Hanyang University (former 1st Vice Minister of Science and Technology), said, “I am looking forward to the role of Hanyang University at a time when innovative policies need to be promoted in order to incorporate the remarkable advancements in science and technology into healthcare, and I will do my best to contribute as a member.”

Professor In Taek Lim of Catholic University (former Director of the Health and Medical Policy Office of the Ministry of Health and Welfare) said, “In order to effectively respond to the rapidly changing medical environment and technological changes, our medical system must develop into human-centered digital-based medical care, and the launch of KMIRF at this time is critical.” “We will strive to ensure that the research committee stands at the center of this,” he said.

Meanwhile, the KMIRF aims to create a healthcare ecosystem where the government, medical community, companies, and citizens can coexist, establishing a future healthcare system centered around prevention and management, and resolving intergenerational and regional medical service imbalances through digital medicine, and other platforms. It will be a proponent in presenting ways to expand access to medical services. In addition, it plans to serve as a bridge through which medical policymakers and decision-makers can come together to commonly recognize and empathize with the all related policies that are put forth.

KMIRF is comprised of policy, human resources, and industry divisions; while Hong Taek Yong, former 1st Vice Minister of Science and ICT, leads the policy division, Yu Mi Seo, former 11th director of the Korea Education and Research Information Service, heads the human resources division, and Mahn Soon Hwang, current CEO of Korea Investment Partners leads the industrial division.

So, I always tell people, bring a raincoat and plan for wind. You know, it’s not like going to the beach even in Oregon, where you can really lay out in the sun.”

“I mean, OK, we do get sunny days, but it’s just not the same as a little further south,” Coleman added.

Visitors can observe ecosystems in miniature in the tide pools of Olympic National Park’s beaches. And while there might not be many sunbathers, the park is a well-known destination for stargazers. About 95% of the park is designated as wilderness and is devoid of human-caused light, making for a spectacular view of the night sky.

North Cascades National Park

This park is named for the many waterfalls along its hundreds of miles of trails. The clear, blue mountain waters of Lake Diablo and the park’s other lakes and rivers offer opportunities for boat tours and fishing and make North Cascades Coleman’s favorite of the state’s three national parks.

She pointed out that although the park is remote, its beauty is accessible to those not up for a hike, since a driving trip along the North Cascades Scenic Highway still affords gorgeous views of mountain peaks, verdant trees and rushing waterfalls.

And for those who want a hands-on experience, North Cascades National Park is known for its climbing opportunities.

Naturalists can keep their eyes peeled for the gray wolves, wolverines and more than 200 species of birds that call one of Earth’s most diverse ecosystems home.

Mount Rainier National Park

“It’s sort of the iconic Washington thing, to go to Mount Rainier National Park,” Coleman said. The mountain lies along several officially designated scenic byways for the road trippers out there, and it is the highest peak in the Evergreen State, rising 14,410 above sea level.

Since the park is so highly attended, a timed entry system will be implemented during the busiest months, from May to September, beginning in 2024. Reservations open 90 days in advance.

NATIONAL PARK WEEK: 15 SURPRISING FACTS ABOUT AMERICA’S PARKS YOU MAY NOT KNOW

This is the most popular state park for mountain climbing and skiing, with more than 20 climbing routes and ski descents. With its wilderness backpacking campsites and more than 260 miles of maintained trails, including some that are paved, hikers of all stripes can find the perfect trek.

Winter sports are popular in Mount Rainier National Park, but it is also known for its hundreds of species of wildflowers that bloom spectacularly over the summer.

Seattle, Washington

Washington’s largest city is also one of its main travel destinations and serves as the origin point for many of the road trips in Scenic Washington’s guides. The city itself offers plenty to do.

Seattle is known for shellfish and coffee

The Emerald City is known for its food and drink scene: Japanese cuisine, craft beer, wine and especially coffee and seafood.

Starbucks is based in Seattle, so naturally, the Starbucks Reserve Roastery is located there, too. Think Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory but for coffee, complete with a coffee bean library. Numerous smaller cafés are spread across the city as well for those who want a more unique espresso experience.

Tea houses and bakeries are in no short supply, either, in case you need to cool it on the caffeine.

Seattle sits on Puget Sound, where shellfish are readily available. The city is known for its oysters.

Seattle's waterfront and city skyline are seen, including the iconic Great Wheel and Space Needle

Iconic Seattle attractions

Visitors to Seattle can stop at one of its many museums, like the Museum of Pop Culture, or look for the Fremont Troll, a giant sculpture under the George Washington Memorial Bridge. The colorful, if a bit gross, Gum Wall near Pike Place Market is worth seeing, and the market is itself well-known for its craftspeople, restaurants and fishmongers.

But few Emerald City attractions are more iconic than the Space Needle. The Space Needle was originally built for the 1962 World’s Fair and has become perhaps the most recognizable element of the city skyline. In just 43 seconds, you can ride the elevator all the way to the observation deck, where you can see far and wide over the rest of Seattle.

Few Emerald City attractions are more iconic than the Space Needle.

Across the street from the Space Needle is Chihuly Garden and Glass, home to the works of renowned glass artist Dale Chihuly. The breathtaking installations make this TripAdvisor’s top-rated Seattle attraction.

If the Space Needle is the most iconic component of Seattle’s Skyline, the Great Wheel is No. 2. This Ferris wheel was built in 2012 and offers a different way to get a bird’s eye view of the city and the surrounding mountains.

The Amazon Spheres provide an unexpected break from the hustle and bustle of the city with their four-story jungle-like interior, containing more than 40,000 plants. Another Washington-based company, Amazon, constructed the spheres to afford employees the tranquility of the rainforest without leaving the city. The Spheres are open to the public for free during the first and third Saturday of each month.

Kerry Park offers an extraordinary vista of the city skyline, Space Needle and all. On a clear day, Mount Rainier can be seen in the background. Photographers can often be found here as the sun goes down.

More from Washington state

Washington’s national parks and Seattle might be its most famous attractions, but you could see them all without even leaving the western half of the state — and even then, you would be missing other attractions in the west.

Mount St. Helens

In the southwest of Washington, visitors can find the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument, just south of Mount Rainier. “And that’s a really cool place to go visit,” Coleman said, “Because you can actually drive right up into the blast zone.” The total devastation wrought by the volcano’s 1980 eruption contrasts with the new growth that has regenerated in the area, making for a thought-provoking trip to a natural wonder that could easily be overshadowed by Mount Rainier.

The Columbia River Gorge isn’t far away: “The Gorge is really a fantastic place. It’s basically along the Columbia River, which is the river that separates us from Oregon. That whole gorge region … both the Washington and Oregon sides, is kind of like waterfall central,” said Coleman.

Whale watching

Orcas, gray whales and humpback whales can be spotted in Washington’s Puget Sound all year round, and whale-watching boat tours are available at multiple locations along the coast. Most boats won’t get too close to the whales, as some are endangered and have been killed in collisions with ships. Make sure to dress warmly and bring your binoculars.

Eastern Washington

The eastern portion of the state is totally different from what many think of as the wet environs of the Pacific Northwest. On the other side of the Cascade mountain range, it gets dry and hot. The city of Spokane provides an urban hub for excursions eastward and, though smaller than Seattle, offers arts and culture, craft beer and wine, and other trappings of an urban center.

South of Spokane lies Pullman, where Washington State University is located. Further south still is Hells Canyon, the deepest river gorge in North America. Though it lies mostly in Oregon and Idaho, a portion of it does fall in southeastern Washington. This gorge is popular for high-speed jet-boating during the hot summers.

The region is also home to Palouse Falls, the official state waterfall of Washington, located in Palouse Falls State Park. The falls cascade down 198 feet to the Snake River. (Bernard Friel/Education Images/Universal Images Group via Getty Images)

The warm, sunny weather makes the region great for agriculture. “Wine country” is in the center of the southern portion of the state. The region, as you might be able to guess, is known for its more than 300 vineyards and wineries.

Road trips

There are many reasons to visit Washington state, but many visitors tend to fit within a certain profile, Coleman told Fox News Digital: “Everybody has their different thing that they’re wanting to accomplish when they visit, but overall … if they’ve chosen Washington as their destination, chances are they’re looking for outdoor recreation or, you know, scenic views, seafood or national parks.”

US NATIONAL PARK ATTENDANCE SOARED IN 2023 AS MILLIONS OF AMERICANS CONTINUE TO HEAD OUTDOORS

That is why Scenic Washington offers pre-planned road trip itineraries. The popular Cascade Loop begins from Seattle and circles the northern half of the state. The Palouse Scenic Byway explores Washington’s east, from its central desert lands to lakes and waterfalls to the rolling wheat fields of the Palouse region, which holds the largest concentration of wheat per acre in the world.

Signs of multiple sclerosis can be detected in blood 5 years before symptoms appear, new study finds. Here’s why this breakthrough is important.

0

A new study found that in about 10% cases of multiple sclerosis, the body begins producing a distinctive set of antibodies against its own proteins years before symptoms emerge. “Multiple sclerosis is a complex autoimmune disease that is difficult to diagnose,” Colin Zamecnik, a researcher at UC San Francisco and lead author on the paper, tells Yahoo Life. “We believe that a subset of patients that go on to develop MS, around 10%, develop antibodies against a common protein domain that is prevalent in humans and viruses that infect us.”

This patient population exhibits the antibodies many years before the onset of MS. Zamecnik says that when they are tested at the time of their first disease flare, the antibodies show up in both their blood and cerebrospinal fluid. “We believe it’s possible that these patients are exhibiting cross reactive response to a prior infection, which agrees with much current work in the literature around multiple sclerosis disease progression,” he says.

Scientists already know that B cells — the cells that make antibodies — are crucial for MS disease progression. Because of this, UCSF researchers believed that profiling the antibodies in people that have, or go on to develop, MS would give them insight into the disease and reveal a possible biomarker — a measurable sign they could look out for.

“From the largest cohort of blood samples on earth, we obtained blood samples from MS patients years before their symptoms began and profiled antibodies against self — autoantibodies — that are associated with multiple sclerosis diagnosis,” says Zamecnik. “We found the first molecular marker of MS that appears up to five years before diagnosis in their blood.”

Why this is important

Although the biomarker is associated with a subset of MS patients when tested at the time of their first flare or relapse, 100% of those people exhibiting the biomarker eventually developed MS. “This could be a useful tool to help triage and diagnose patients with otherwise nonspecific neurological symptoms and prioritize them for closer surveillance and possible treatment,” says Zamecnik.

Dr. Cole Harrington, a neurologist at the Ohio State University Wexner Center, agrees that the discoveries could help diagnose MS earlier, and lead to earlier treatment.

“We do know from data in Canada looking retrospectively at people in emergency room visits and visits to health care systems, that many people have a prodromal phase of MS where they have a lot of symptoms before they’re actually diagnosed and we don’t have good biomarkers or ways of identifying people who are at risk for MS or will go on to develop MS,” says Harrington. “I think any advancement in that area will be helpful for diagnosis because the symptoms early on tend to be somewhat nonspecific.”

The biomarker could also help a category of people who have radiologically isolated syndrome, which means they have white matter changes on the brain — an indication of MS — but don’t have any classical MS relapses.

“They don’t meet criteria for MS, but some of them are at risk for developing MS, so potentially utilizing these biomarkers within that patient population may be helpful to determine which of those people are going to go on to develop MS or [have an] increased risk of developing MS,” Harrington says.

Same may occur with people who had one clinical MS relapse but don’t meet the full criteria for MS, as well as people who have relatives with MS and also have white matter changes on their brain.

“Not everybody who has a first degree relative develops MS, but the risk is higher in those individuals and so potentially applying it to those people as well with a first- or second-degree relative could be helpful,” says Harrington.

Who is at risk for MS?

According to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, most people are diagnosed with MS between the ages of 20 and 50. However, it can occur in younger people, too. While MS can affect anyone in any ethnic group, in the U.S., the condition most commonly occurs in white people of northern European descent. MS is not believed to be passed down to relatives. However, 200 genes have been identified to contribute in a minor way to a person’s overall risk of developing MS.

Research shows that the following factors contribute to developing MS:

What are the early signs of MS?

Common symptoms of MS include the following:

Early diagnosis of MS makes a big difference

Emerging data shows earlier treatment of MS with more effective therapies is better in terms of reducing disability long-term.

“If people are not diagnosed earlier in their symptoms or have a delayed diagnosis, we are missing out on that critical therapeutic window of time where we can make a difference by suppressing the inflammation and preventing new lesions from forming,” says Harrington.

Several ongoing trials are investigating the impact of using early aggressive therapy vs. an escalation approach, which involves starting treatment with lower efficacy therapy, and moving onto more aggressive therapy when the person has a relapse or new lesion.

“I think this field is changing in terms of [scientists’] thinking and that early, more aggressive treatment is beneficial long-term for people with MS in terms of their prognosis and outcome,” Harrington says.

The best way to do this, according to Zamecnik, may be a simple antibody test that is highly specific for MS. “This signature will be the focus of future work investigating how the immune system recognizes cross talk between pathogens and self in the context of autoimmune disease,” he says.
