Airports beg flight passengers to change their travel habits after DHS shutdown jams lines

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Airports are still recovering from the fallout of the DHS shutdown that resulted in a shortage of transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers — and some are now changing their advisory messages to travelers.

John Glenn Columbus International Airport in Ohio is cautioning passengers to arrive just 1.5 hours before their flights depart.

“Early morning travel PSA, 90 minutes before departure is the sweet spot,” the airport posted on X on Thursday.

“Showing up too early creates those first-wave lines,” the post also said. “Even when lines stretch to ticketing, waits are usually [about] 45 mins.”

The airport also attached a graphic of suggested arrival times for flights starting at 5 p.m. through 12 p.m.

Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas wrote on X it’s expecting over 30,000 travelers to be processed by TSA on Monday.

“There is no need to line up more than 4 hours before your flight, as this causes congestion in the lines for those flying out sooner,” the airport wrote.

“Arriving 2.5 hours early for domestic flights and 3 hours for international flights is our recommendation,” it added.

IFPA launches first Africa Forum on psoriasis calling for urgent action on overlooked disease

Nairobi event takes place May 7-9

STOCKHOLM, March 30, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — IFPA (The International Federation of Psoriasis Associations) – is convening the first-ever regional summit dedicated exclusively to psoriasis in Africa – one of the continent’s most underrecognized chronic diseases.

Key Highlights:

  • First Africa Forum on Psoriasis: May 7–9, Nairobi, bringing together global and local stakeholders.
  • Huge unmet need: 3.5M+ Africans affected, with limited care, stigma, and devastating economic impact.
  • Focus areas: Local research, patient representation, and improved access to treatment.

The IFPA Forum Africa 2026 – Local Strength, United Action will take place on 7-9 May 2026 in Nairobi, Kenya, and will bring together policymakers, clinicians, researchers, and patient organizations to address a condition that remains severely under-recognized and underdiagnosed across the continent.

The Hidden Burden of Psoriasis in Africa

Psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis are chronic non-communicable diseases with no cure that can cause pain, disability, and are closely linked to other serious NCDs, like diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease, depression, and more. As a condition, visible on the skin, it often leads to stigma, affects mental health and can also cause economic hardship. Yet across Africa it remains under-recognized, underdiagnosed, and undertreated.

Over 3.5 million people are estimated to live with psoriasis across Africa – a continent of approximately 1.3 billion population. As experts warn the real psoriasis burden is likely higher due to limited epidemiological data, low awareness of the disease and severe shortages of specialists. Reported prevalence in parts of East, West, Central, and Southern Africa is as low as 0.06%, reflecting widespread underdiagnosis.

Access to Care and Economic Impact

Access to care is extremely limited: there is one dermatologist per more than a million people in Africa, compared with 36 per million in the United States and 65 per million in Germany. With most care paid out of pocket, treatment for psoriasis is often unaffordable, meaning the disease can become a pathway into poverty for those affected and their families.

To drive change, IFPA is convening regional and global stakeholders at this first-of-its-kind Forum, working alongside patient organizations like PsorAfrica to create a roadmap for tackling psoriasis in Africa.

Frida Dunger, Executive Director of IFPA, said:

Psoriasis is a public health challenge. Addressing it is not optional — it is part of building resilient, equitable health systems. Every year, IFPA Forum puts focus on a region at a time, bringing together local stakeholders to inspire advocacy efforts and call for united action on psoriasis. This year, we bring the Forum to Africa, and we believe the timing is right. By listening to local patient organizations and developing a roadmap for tackling psoriasis in Africa together, we can ensure that millions of people living with psoriasis are finally seen, heard, and supported.”

Whether in the rural areas or in the cities, people in Africa do not know enough about psoriasis. And it affects my life. The cost, the worry, the impact on my life choices and social relationships. At the Forum, we are gathering experts who understand this disease and stand up for a better future. Africa is prioritizing health, and we will be a part of building solutions, – said Pierre Celestin Habiyaremye, President of PsorAfrica and Founder of Rwanda Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis Organization.

Janet Mbugua, a prominent Kenyan media professional and advocate for social change, has confirmed that she will host the Forum. She said:

I’m truly honored to host the IFPA Forum Africa. Psoriasis affects millions of people, yet it’s still not spoken about enough. This is an opportunity to bring those stories to the forefront, shed light on the real challenges people are facing, and support the work being done locally to strengthen care, research, and policy across the continent.”

The Forum will focus on three urgent priorities:

  • research – to generate local data on psoriasis
  • representation – to ensure patient voices shape decisions about healthcare
  • rights and access – to integrate psoriasis into national NCD strategies, include essential medicines, and combat stigma.

About IFPA

IFPA (the International Federation of Psoriasis Associations), founded in 1971 and based in Stockholm, Sweden, is the global organization dedicated to advocating for everyone affected by psoriatic disease. IFPA’s members include national and regional patient associations and represent over 60 million people worldwide. Through global coalitions, World Psoriasis Day campaigns, the IFPA Forum, and the World Psoriasis & Psoriatic Arthritis Conference, IFPA is redefining psoriatic disease as a key lens for stronger, more inclusive health systems.

Tristan Xerri explains blood-wiping act as AFL tribunal hands down three-match ban

0

North Melbourne ruck Tristan Xerri has been handed a three-match suspension for wiping blood on the face of Essendon captain Andy McGrath.

Xerri was charged with serious misconduct and sent straight to the tribunal for the ugly incident during Saturday night’s clash at Marvel Stadium.

The 27-year-old rang McGrath to apologise for his actions the day after the Kangaroos’ win over the Bombers, and also addressed the entire playing group.

Know the news with the 7NEWS app: Download today Arrow

Xerri faced the tribunal on Monday night and pleaded guilty, as well as giving evidence.

He said there was no excuse for what he did, but added that was called a series of names in the lead-up to the incident.

Minutes before it happened, Xerri had given away a 50m penalty and then been bowled over by two Essendon players, including McGrath. He was slow to get up from the clash that caused the blood nose.

“I was quite displeased with the names I was being called … I was getting called an ‘effing c-word’, a ‘flopping c-word’,” he said.

Xerri said he “wanted to show them he was bleeding”, but admitted it was a “brain fade” in the heat of the moment.

“There’s no excuses. It’s a poor look and I had a brain fade,” he said.

“I extracted the blood to show them (Essendon) I was bleeding. That was my intention.

“It wasn’t my intention to get the blood to put on his face. I was defending myself and in that moment, I just had a brain fade and did what I did, I know better. I should’ve done better.

“It’s not right what I did. I’m sorry and I sincerely apologise for that.”

The AFL asked for a three-match penalty, while the Kangaroos argued for a two-match ban.

The tribunal deliberated for over 30 minutes before settling on three matches. They described the act as “disgraceful”.

“The appearance or the look of the act is quite shocking. On any view, the act qualifies as serious misconduct,” the tribunal said in its findings.

“We also take into account the fact that Xerri pleaded guilty to the serious misconduct charge and made no attempt whatsoever than to minimise the nature of his conduct.

“Xerri’s evidence was impressive. He stated that he suffered a lapse in judgment, but that there were no excuses. He said that he suffered a brain fade, and that he knows better and should have done better.

“We have viewed all of the video evidence and taking that into account, together with Xerri’s evidence, it is clear that he had suffered a blow to the face and that he was upset at being taunted for having staged or flopped.

“It is of some significance that Xerri admitted that there was blood on his hand, despite the fact that the vision did not clearly show this to be the case.

“Although the vision did clearly show that Xerri’s nose was bleeding and that he wiped his nose with his hand before touching McGrath’s face, the concession Xerri made goes to his credit.

“We also note that Xerri took it upon himself to speak to his doctor about the medical aspects of his conduct. In the end, however, we are of the view that this serious misconduct warrants a suspension of three matches.”

Xerri will miss the Good Friday clash against Carlton, as well as matches against Brisbane and Richmond.

The incident unfolded after Xerri had just kicked a goal and then got into a scuffle with McGrath and other Essendon players.

He then wiped his nose, which had been bleeding, multiple times before wiping his finger on McGrath’s cheek.

Saturday night’s incident has received widespread condemnation, with AFL chief executive Andrew Dillon on Sunday saying it’s “something that we don’t want to see.”

The incident had shades of a clash between Collingwood champion Nathan Buckley and Geelong tagger Cameron Ling in 2002.

Buckley was suspended for one match for deliberately smearing blood from a cut eyebrow onto the guernsey of Ling in an attempt to force Ling from the field under the blood rule.

Ling on Sunday recalled there was “no malice” in the Buckley incident, but declared Xerri’s action unacceptable in the modern game.

Budget airlines built on cheap fares now face a painful reality: Fuel is getting expensive

0

Budget airlines in Asia risk losing their price advantage as fuel prices rise and Middle East tensions disrupt key routes, forcing carriers to raise fares and cut expenses.

Low-cost carriers rely on high passenger volumes and low fares, leaving them with thinner margins and less room to absorb fuel price swings and route disruptions than full-service airlines.

Airline executives, speaking at the Aviation Festival Asia conference in Singapore, said they are now trying to cut costs, adjust fares and shift routes to avoid passing too much of the increase on to passengers.

“[We have to] adjust the fares, and at the same time, stimulate the demand,” Vissoth Nam, CEO at AirAsia Cambodia, told CNBC’s Monica Pitrelli during a panel on Thursday. “Otherwise, we don’t have travelers.”

India’s SpiceJet said the Middle East conflict has significantly affected its operations due to heavy traffic between India and the region.

“Dubai alone has 77 flights a week from India, and that’s absolutely a huge impact for us from a route and loss of revenue perspective,”  said Kamal Hingorani, the chief customer officer at SpiceJet.

While higher fuel costs have not yet fully hit the airline, Hingorani said prices are set monthly and could rise further in April.

The Investment Information and Credit Rating Agency of India on March 26 changed its outlook on India’s aviation sector to negative from stable, citing the weaker Indian Rupee against the U.S. dollar and higher fuel prices. Fuel prices were 5.4% higher in March from a year earlier and are expected to rise further in April.

Hingorani said if fuel prices rise to an unmanageable level, the airline “may have to absorb some [costs]” because passing on high fuel surcharges would hurt demand.

Long-haul strength

Not all airlines have been affected equally, however.

Zipair Tokyo says it has performed relatively well compared with other budget airlines, partly because its routes avoid the Middle East and have not been disrupted by the conflict.

The airline, which operates a fleet of eight planes on mid- to long-haul international flights, has also seen strong demand during Japan’s cherry blossom season, particularly in April.

“With this crisis, there are some routes that have become strong while others have weakened,” said Brendan Sobie, an aviation analyst at Sobie Aviation. Long-haul routes have generally remained resilient.

However, fuel prices still directly affect costs, Yasuhiro Fukada, incoming chief executive and co-founder of Zipair, said, especially because the airline carrier does not impose fuel surcharges.

While Japan has domestic oil reserves and is procuring crude from the United States, Zipair told CNBC in an email that supply conditions could still become more challenging depending on how the conflict develops.

Its parent company, Japan Airlines, implemented a fuel surcharge policy on international flights on Feb. 27 due to the “unprecedented rises” in fuel prices.

Zipair intends to double its fleet to over 20 aircraft by 2032, Fukada said.

Airlines turn to tech

Low-cost carriers are also turning to technology to reduce costs.

Zipair said on 26 Feb that its flights would be equipped with Starlink satellite internet at no charge to passengers.

The service allows airlines to stream entertainment to passengers’ devices instead of installing heavier in-flight entertainment systems, reducing maintenance and fuel costs.

SpiceJet said its subsidiary SpiceTech develops in-house software for customers and operational systems, allowing the airline to cut nearly 80% of its technology vendors and reduce expenses.

This, Hingorani said, was “fundamental for our survival … because [SpiceTech is] a subsidiary and not our own company directly, it also is doing a lot of work for global airlines on those things.”

New study reveals happiest cities in America, and they aren’t where you’d expect

Americans searching for a happier place to live may want to look beyond the country’s biggest and most well-known cities.

A new WalletHub study analyzing more than 180 of the largest U.S. cities found that overall happiness is driven by more than just income, factoring in mental health, physical well-being and community environment.

Instead of major hubs like New York or Los Angeles topping the list, smaller and mid-sized cities dominated the rankings.

Rounding out the top 10 were Overland Park, Kansas, Charleston, South Carolina, Irvine, California, Gilbert, Arizona and San Jose, California.

Higher salaries in large metro areas don’t necessarily lead to greater happiness, the results suggest. Instead, quality of life appears to play a larger role.

“Research shows that having more money only increases your happiness until you’re making at least $75,000 per year — anything more you earn likely won’t have an impact,” WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo said in a statement.

“Therefore, when deciding where to live to maximize your happiness, you’ll want to pick a city that offers more than just a decent average income,” he added.

‘Hearts break’ as West Coast veteran Elliot Yeo suffers a groin injury in clash against Port Adelaide

0

West Coast veteran Elliot Yeo is staring down the barrel of more time on the sidelines after suffering a groin injury in Sunday’s thrilling win over Port Adelaide.

The tough midfielder was one of his side’s best in the first half with four crunching tackles and a goal, but played no further part after the long break.

Yeo cut a dejected figure at the back of the bench with the club confirming it was a groin injury.

Know the news with the 7NEWS app: Download today Arrow

“Your heart breaks for Elliot Yeo,” Kelli Underwood said on Fox Footy.

Former Port Adelaide coach Hinkley hoped it was precautionary.

“You’d love him to get a run at it for a good period of time,” Hinkley said

“Let’s hope for his sake it’s just precautionary and they are looking after him.”

The latest injury continues a nightmare run for the 32-year-old, who has a long history of groin injuries.

Yeo has managed just 59 over the past six seasons due to a series of different injuries.

He missed the entire 2025 campaign due to an ankle injury, but bounced back to feature in the club’s opening two matches this season.

And despite being on managed minutes, he had been among his side’s best in the season-opening loss to Gold Coast and breakthrough win over North Melbourne.

Yeo is contracted until the end of 2027.

Meanwhile, Port Adelaide also had their own injury issues with key defender Esava Ratugolea’s day ending early with a knee injury.

Ratugolea limped off early in the third quarter, briefly returned to the field, before coming off again and having ice applied to his right knee.

Despite losing Yeo and conceding the first four goals of the match, the Eagles fought back brilliantly to claim a thrilling two-point win and bank consecutive AFL wins for the first time in almost two years.

Andrew McQualter’s men overcame a 29-point deficit in the second quarter to prevail 13.14 (92) to 13.12 (90) on Sunday.

West Coast, who hadn’t won successive matches since rounds six and seven in 2024, were victors at Adelaide Oval for the first time since Round 6, 2022.

Jake Waterman’s scoring output — he booted 4.4 — included a 65m set shot in the last quarter, while Harley Reid (21 disposals) and Bo Allan kicked two majors each.

The Eagles’ No.1 draft pick Willem Duursma (20 possessions, one goal) and second-gamer Josh Lindsay (19 touches) impressed while veteran Tim Kelly (23 disposals) was influential.

Port attackers Mitch Georgiades and Jack Whitlock both booted three goals and Corey Durdin scored two.

But despite the ball-winning of acting captain Zak Butters (30 disposals), Kane Farrell (25) and Jase Burgoyne (21), the Power fell short.
