Can drinking a blend of oats, water and lime juice help you lose weight? Here’s what nutritionists think about the ‘oatzempic’ trend.

0

Weight loss drugs continue to gain in popularity, but not everyone who wants them can afford these medications, leaving some people hunting for more cost-effective alternatives. While natural options may seem promising, their effectiveness can be unpredictable. Berberine, for example, has been labeled “nature’s Ozempic,” though it may help more with managing blood sugar levels than aiding in actual weight loss. Meanwhile, psyllium husk — an inexpensive fiber supplement — is sought-after for its ability to temporarily suppress appetite by promoting a sense of fullness, but it’s important to note that fiber alone does not directly cause weight loss.

More recently, there’s been a viral trend involving the consumption of “oatzempic,” a drink crafted from oats, water and lime juice blended together. Its name cleverly references the prescription diabetes medication Ozempic, which is also well known for its weight loss benefits. This trend has gained lots of attention on platforms like TikTok, with claims suggesting it can help individuals shed as much as 40 pounds in two months.

“The oatzempic trend may seem enticing due to its simplicity and potential for rapid weight loss, but it’s essential to approach it with caution,” Vandana Sheth, registered dietitian nutritionist and author of My Indian Table: Quick & Tasty Vegetarian Recipes, tells Yahoo Life. So what are the downsides — as well as any possible benefits — of oatzempic, and can it really help with weight loss? Here’s what experts have to say.

How do you make oatzempic?

To prepare oatzempic, blend a half cup of raw oats, 1 cup of water and the juice of half a lime together until smooth. Drink it on an empty stomach, aiming for one to two servings a day. If you aren’t a fan of the taste, some people add a dash of cinnamon or honey, though the latter will add some calories and sugar.

Why the lime?

It’s unclear why lime juice is a key ingredient, though many suspect it’s primarily for enhancing the flavor of the drink, which has been described as chalky. Plus, lime juice provides a healthy dose of the antioxidant vitamin C.

Despite what some believe, Sheth clarifies, “there’s a misconception that acidic foods like lime juice can aid in fat burning, which is not supported by scientific evidence.” Dr. Amy Lee, head of nutrition for Nucific, tells Yahoo Life that a stomach’s acidity is greater than that of the fruit anyway.

What are the benefits?

Oatzempic’s benefits have been touted by people on social media trying it out for a 40-day challenge, but its impact on health hasn’t actually been researched. That said, oats alone boast many health advantages: They contain antioxidants and are linked with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, lower cholesterol and better blood sugar control. Research also shows potential for oats to help with regulating appetite and maintaining weight.

In just half a cup of oats, there are 5 grams of protein, 4 grams of fiber and a variety of vitamins and minerals. Oats are an excellent source of soluble fiber, particularly beta-glucan, which helps slow digestion, moves food and waste through the gut and promotes regular bowel movements.

Does oatzempic help with weight loss?

Substituting a meal with oatzempic can support weight loss efforts. However, as Julie Pace, functional dietitian and founder of Core Nutrition Health and Wellness, tells Yahoo Life: “It’s important to understand that this weight loss is primarily due to calorie restriction rather than any unique properties of oatzempic’s ingredients.” With just about 150 calories in a half cup of oats, oatzempic is low-calorie. Its fiber content may also promote a feeling of fullness, leading to less overall eating during the day.

Experts advise embracing this trend with caution since oatzempic does not offer a balanced or sustainable approach to weight loss. “Simply substituting high-calorie meals with low-calorie shakes may result in quick weight loss,” Sheth explains, “but without sustainable lifestyle changes, it may lead to health complications and weight regain once regular eating habits resume.”

Lee agrees: “I don’t think it is a long-term solution. Changing just one meal and its composition is a good start, but overall, one has to be mindful of the rest of the day as well.”

What are the downsides?

Pace says that oatzempic “encourages an unhealthy, unsustainable and restrictive approach to weight loss that is not supportive of overall health and well-being. Sustainable weight management involves making gradual, sustainable changes to diet and lifestyle rather than relying on quick fixes or extreme measures.”

Sheth warns that “rapid weight loss through extreme measures can lead to health complications such as nutrient deficiencies, loss of lean muscle tissue, hair loss and hormonal imbalances.” Not only are trends like oatzempic restrictive, especially if done for an extended amount of time, but they also risk promoting disordered eating habits.

While some people recommend using oatzempic as a meal replacement, experts point out it doesn’t contain nearly enough calories, protein or fat to be considered an equal swap. Generally for meals, you want to aim for about 15 to 30 grams of protein and at least twice as many calories as what’s found in a single serving of oatzempic.

“I do see some people adding protein powder and altering it by squeezing in some good oils,” says Lee. However, these additions change the simplicity of oatzempic and resemble more of a balanced breakfast.

Final takeaways

“If one is trying to just feel full in the morning to start their day strong, there are definitely other ways to do so,” says Lee. Instead of drinking oatzempic, aim for a satisfying breakfast of oatmeal, including fruit, seeds (hemp, chia and flax) and nuts (walnuts, almonds) for added protein, fiber and fat. If you prefer the drink version, consider swapping in milk for water or adding nut butter.

Although drinking oatzempic may increase fiber and water intake, experts agree that prioritizing overall health and wellness with sustainable habits is best if weight loss is your goal, and they note that weight loss alone doesn’t always mean improved health.

Hot travel trend has people seeking quiet escape and personal transformation

0

The hottest trend in travel today is not hitting the busiest city or looking for the coolest nightlife.

Rather, it’s the opposite: It’s about looking for peace and quiet.

People reportedly want to escape the busyness of their everyday lives and spend their vacations in a more relaxed setting, allowing time for silence, thoughtfulness and introspection.

Whether travelers are looking for quiet walks or serene views of nature, the “quest for quietude” has become the travel trend everyone is obsessed with, as Condé Nast Traveler and others have reported.

TRAVEL AND TOURISM TO BREAK RECORDS, BRING OVER $11 TRILLION IN 2024: REPORT

“For many, quiet travel goes beyond escaping the cacophony of everyday life while on vacation,” noted the Associated Press.

“It can be a shift toward introspection, a deeper connection with where we are both literally and figuratively.”

The journal JAMA Psychiatry published a study in late 2022 showing that mindful meditation was just as effective as a drug used to treat anxiety.

“Transformative travel’s a trend we’re tracking for growth,” said Alex Hawkins, editor at the trend forecaster and consultancy The Future Laboratory, as the AP noted.

“It taps into consumers’ desire for self-reflective tourism experiences.”

This “wellness tourism industry” is focused on the “demand for hyper-personal holidays and health-driven stays,” Hawkins said.

The concept of “peaceful pampering” comes into play as many seek an oasis where they can unplug and focus on self-care.

There are an assortment of retreats that offer digital detoxes or silent meditations to participants, AP noted.

Another rising trend is people taking silent walks, which allows them to get lost in their thoughts instead of listening to music or speaking with other walkers.

Gordon Hempton, an acoustic ecologist in Washington State — also referred to as “The Sound Tracker” — has spent decades traveling around the world visiting rainforests, coastlines and deserts “looking for interesting and often rare nature sounds — sounds you can’t easily hear when there’s a lot of human-made noise,” said AP.

“I care very deeply about quiet,” Hampton said, according to the AP.

He co-founded Quiet Parks International, a nonprofit that focuses on raising awareness of the benefits of less noise for both people and wildlife. The group offers a variety of experiences all around the world for people who are open to meditative stillness and relaxing walks in the woods.

Instead of creating a full itinerary, people are now allowing themselves to get “low-key lost” and leave the planning to someone they don’t know without having any idea of where they’ll end up.

Black Tomato, a luxury travel company, offers some vacationers a travel experience called, literally, “Get Lost.”

This unique offering requires trip seekers to fill out a detailed questionnaire about what they hope to expect from their trip, but they will not know what’s in store or where they’re going until they arrive, the AP reported.

“You’re given pre-trip prep advice and navigation instruction, and then, at trip time, all the transfers, gear and mapped-out checkpoints you’ll need.”

Marchant said it can be a challenge to manage the vacationer’s environment, but “it’s also a time to truly disconnect from daily life in an entirely new way.”

Ohio’s Sherman House Museum displays humanity, artistry of fearsome Civil War general

Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman lives on as a larger-than-life figure in the oft-told annals of American military history

The most intimate and unknown details of the man behind the legend are uncovered at the Sherman House Museum in Lancaster, Ohio.

It opens for the season today, Wednesday, April 10.

RAISE 500-POUND PUMPKINS IN YOUR BACKYARD: 5 TIPS FROM AMERICA’S WORLD-RECORD GOURD GROWER

“Sometimes we turn these heroes, like we’ve done with George Washington, almost into gods. I think that does a disservice to them,” Michael Johnson, director of the Sherman House Museum, told Fox News Digital.

“I think it needs to be presented that these were ordinary people who did extraordinary things when the moment came, and that’s what set them apart.”

Sherman was born in the home in 1820 and lived there until his father died when the future West Point cadet and U.S. Army legend, one of 11 children, was just 9 years old.

The general has long been remembered as a fearsome military commander, which included a notorious reputation in the American south.

But the legend of the warrior overshadows the thoughtful artist discovered at the Sherman House Museum: patron of the theater, Renaissance man and beloved old commander called “Uncle Billy” by his men long after the war.

The museum displays a copy of Sherman’s brilliant illustration, “Death of Centaur,” which he drew while a cadet at the United States Military Academy.

“Artistry ran through the Sherman family,” said Johnson. “He loved the theater and he loved the arts. He finished top of his class at West Point in art.”

The museum displays needlepoint by the soldier’s mother, Mary Hoyt Sherman, and four chairs carved with scenes from Shakespeare’s plays.

Sherman had the chairs made after the war when he lived in New York City, where he became a prominent supporter of its famous theater scene.

Among other little-known contributions to American history: Sherman, while living in New York, personally selected Bedloe’s Island, now Liberty Island — a short ferry ride from Ellis Island — as the location to place the Statue of Liberty, gifted by the people of France.

The life of the man known at the Sherman House Museum contrasts sharply with the fearsome wartime leader.

Sherman led the Union force that overran and burned the little crossroads city of Atlanta to the ground in November 1864.

It was a cultural watershed event in American history. Among other things, the burning of Atlanta inspired the beloved Civil War fictional epic “Gone With the Wind.”

He then led his troops on a conquest of Georgia all the way to Savannah. It’s gone down in history as Gen. Sherman’s infamous “March to the Sea.”

It’s considered a harbinger of the “total war” to follow in the 20th century.

Hormone therapy (HT) has been a controversial topic with women and even some doctors after a damning and controversial early 2000s study linked the treatment for menopause symptoms to an increased risk of several cancers and heart disease. While that research is now seen as flawed, there has been a lot of hesitation for both doctors and women in menopause to use this form of therapy, especially after the age of 65.

Now, new research finds that women who use hormone therapy after age 65 are usually fine to do just that — but the dose and timing of the treatment matter. The study, which was published in Menopause, the journal of The Menopause Society, analyzed data from 10 million senior women on Medicare between 2007 and 2020. The researchers concluded that potential risks of using hormone therapy after age 65 vary by the type, route and dose women take.

As a result, the researchers concluded that there should be no general rule for women stopping hormone therapy based on age alone. They also found that continuing hormone therapy beyond age 65 can be helpful for combating symptoms of menopause. Low-dose and non-oral forms of hormone therapy can also be increasingly important as women age, the study found.

Hormone therapy is considered the most effective treatment option for managing intense symptoms linked with menopause, including hot flashes. However, it’s an underutilized treatment: Research has found that just 6.86% of women had a prescription for HT in 2020.

Here’s what you need to know about hormone therapy, including the latest findings.

What is hormone therapy?

Hormone therapy, which is also referred to as hormone replacement therapy (HRT), involves taking estrogen and in some cases also progestin to replace hormones that your body loses during menopause, according to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG).

ACOG notes that hormone therapy is the best treatment for intense symptoms of menopause, including hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness and bone loss.

What is the controversy around hormone therapy?

Preliminary results published in 2003 from the Women’s Health Initiative clinical trial linked a combination of estrogen and progestin with an increased risk of heart disease, stroke, blood clots, dementia and breast cancer. As a result of this association, the study was stopped early.

However, while the medical community and many women shunned hormone therapy as a result, the findings were later discredited. As researchers later discovered, the original research studied women who were 65 and up who already had a greater risk of heart attack, stroke, blood clots and more. As a result, it skewed the data. The study also didn’t analyze important information, like how old these women were when they started taking hormone therapy.

Since then, research has found that taking estrogen with a particular form of progesterone (medroxyprogesterone acetate) may increase the risk of breast cancer, but there was no effect when women took estrogen alone. A form of progesterone called micronized progesterone can also be helpful — it’s not linked with breast cancer.

“There has been a lot of holdover from the Women’s Health Initiative study — it scared everybody, but it was poorly designed,” Dr. G. Thomas Ruiz, a lead ob-gyn at MemorialCare Orange Coast Medical Center in Fountain Valley, Calif., tells Yahoo Life. “It really did a disservice to the concept of hormone replacement therapy.”

As a result, “Women have been very confused about the benefits or potential consequences of hormone therapy,” women’s health expert Dr. Jennifer Wider tells Yahoo Life.

Health benefits of hormone therapy

Again, ACOG says that hormone therapy is the most effective way to prevent or minimize uncomfortable side effects of menopause. However, it has additional perks.

A study published in 2023 found that people who started hormone therapy around the time they started menopause didn’t have an increased risk for developing tau proteins in the brain — a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease. The researchers concluded that this suggests HT may lower the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease with age.

The latest study in the journal Menopause found that using estrogen monotherapy — in other words, just taking estrogen alone — was linked with significant reductions in risk for mortality, breast cancer, lung cancer, colorectal cancer, congestive heart failure, venous thromboembolism (when a blood clot forms in a vein), atrial fibrillation, acute myocardial infarction (aka, a heart attack) and dementia.

People who used a combination of estrogen and progestogen therapy had an increased risk of breast cancer, but that was dampened when patients took low doses of transdermal (as in, through a patch) or vaginal progestin. Using progestin in hormone therapy also led to significant risk reductions in endometrial cancer, ovarian cancer, ischemic heart disease, congestive heart failure and venous thromboembolism, the researchers found.

What experts think about the study

Dr. Lauren Streicher, clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, calls the research “added reassurance.” She tells Yahoo Life: “The data is very solid that, for the overwhelming majority of women, hormone therapy will have short-term and long-term benefits. Menopause experts have been saying for a long time that you don’t stop hormone therapy at a certain age.”

Dr. Jessica Shepherd, gynecologist, menopause expert and founder of Modern Meno, agrees. “These findings are extremely important for women who have been menopausal for some time, as they have been told they cannot take hormone therapy any longer,” she tells Yahoo Life.

In general, according to the Mayo Clinic, if hormone therapy is started before the age of 60 or within 10 years of menopause, “the benefits appear to outweigh the risks.”

While research has found that hormone therapy is often helpful for women in menopause, the messaging hasn’t gotten out to many women — and doctors, Shepherd notes. “The goal is to educate and make women aware of its potential benefits in their symptom relief and prevention for long-term complications,” she says.

It’s important to point out that hormone therapy requires a prescription. If your health care provider won’t prescribe it to you because you’ve “aged out” of the treatment, Ruiz recommends seeking a second opinion from an ob-gyn or doctor who specializes in the treatment of menopause.

Streicher agrees. “Don’t try to convince your doctor,” she says. “Instead, you need to see someone who knows what they’re doing.”

Tourism Strategy 2030 will create 178,000 new jobs, increase hotel room supply to 52,000 and boost international overnight visitors to over 7 million

ABU DHABI, UAE, April 10, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — His Highness Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, has approved the new Tourism Strategy 2030 for the emirate. Spearheaded by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi), the ambitious blueprint signals a new era of expansion and strategic development in the travel and tourism sector.

Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi to deliver Tourism Strategy 2030 to ensure emirate’s sustainable growth as global tourism destination

The Strategy seeks to boost visitor numbers from nearly 24 million in 2023 to 39.3 million by 2030 (overnight and same-day), with a 7% year-on-year growth. Moreover, it plans to significantly elevate the tourism and travel sector’s contribution to the UAE’s GDP, raising it from approximately AED 49 billion in 2023 to AED 90 billion annually by 2030.

The Strategy will generate an estimated 178,000 new jobs by 2030 as the entire tourism infrastructure develops to meet this demand. It intends to almost double international overnight visitors from 3.8 million in 2023 approximately to 7.2 million in 2030, expand hotel room availability from 34,000 in 2023 to 52,000 by 2030, and further enhance the holiday home segment to diversify accommodation options.

H.E. Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of DCT Abu Dhabi, said: “The Tourism Strategy 2030 marks a pivotal moment in Abu Dhabi’s transformative journey, representing a vital lever in our ongoing evolution. Delivered alongside our key partners, the Strategy underscores our steadfast commitment to fostering sustainable growth and strategic development in the travel and tourism sector. Through carefully crafted initiatives that will unlock economic opportunities, amplify our distinctive culture and enhance the emirate’s value proposition, we are laying the foundation for a vibrant and prosperous future that transcends generations.”

Fostering sustainable growth across four strategic pillars

To achieve the Strategy’s goals, 26 key initiatives have been identified across four strategic pillars: Offering and City Activation; Promotion & Marketing; Infrastructure & Mobility; and Visa, Licensing, and Regulations. These pillars form the foundation of Abu Dhabi’s comprehensive approach to realising its ambitious tourism targets and fostering sustainable growth in the sector.

The initiatives will be unlocked through the collective vision of DCT Abu Dhabi, the Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development (ADDED), the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT), Abu Dhabi Airports Company (ADAC), and other key government and private stakeholders, who play a strategic role in bringing Abu Dhabi’s tourism vision to life.

The first pillar, Offering and City Activation, looks to further enhance the overall guest experience by unveiling additional cultural sites, theme parks, retails offerings and new hotel chains. Overall boosting the emirate’s events calendar of year-round concerts, festivals, and family events. The dining landscape will diversify significantly, offering expanded options including the introduction of culinary schools and training programmes.

DCT Abu Dhabi will also more than double its Promotion and Marketing efforts, expanding its international reach from 11 to 26 markets and enhancing synergy within Abu Dhabi’s tourism ecosystem. It will also establish strategic global partnerships with media outlets and well-known brands for high-profile collaborations, creating compelling, market-specific content across various touchpoints.

The Strategy’s Infrastructure and Mobility pillar will increase hotel room availability across various categories, including accessible and luxury options, glamping, and farm stays. Through valued collaborations, the emirate is set to enhance roads, public transport, and infrastructure, simplifying travel within and boosting visitor inflow through increased flight seat capacity with both local and international airlines.

Lastly, both visitor experience and tourism business operations will be greatly enhanced with streamlined Visa, Licensing and Regulation processes. In collaboration with relevant government agencies, enhanced platforms and processes will reduce time frames for all applications and permits, to improve the ease of doing business and attract investment.

Building on the success of 2023

In 2023, Abu Dhabi’s tourism sector saw a remarkable surge, welcoming nearly 24 million visitors. The 27% rise in hotel guests and 54% increase in international guests bolstered the economy with an approximate AED 49 billion contribution to the UAE’s GDP.

Arrivals from key international markets like India, Russia, United Kingdom, China and Kingdom of Saudi Arabia played a pivotal role in 2023, alongside the numbers attracted by the emirate’s vibrant array of over 150 events, its pristine beaches and natural landscapes, as well as its cultural sites such as Qasr Al Hosn, Qasr al Watan and Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, which attracted more than 8.7 million visitors. Offerings across museums, cultural festivals and art exhibitions saw record-setting attendance at Louvre Abu Dhabi and the inaugural Manar Abu Dhabi public art exhibition, underscoring the emirate’s diverse appeal.

Visitor numbers were further boosted by a 44% increase in MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) events. With 960,000 delegates across 2,477 events exploring Abu Dhabi’s attractions and dining options, the food and beverage sector saw a resultant 21% revenue increase. In addition, flagship entertainment events like the MOTN Festival and Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, along with cultural milestones such as the Al Hosn Festival and the Liwa Festival, further solidified Abu Dhabi’s position as a global centre for leisure and tourism.
