From cherry blossoms to water festivals: Trip.com Group reveals Asia’s biggest spring travel trends

0

SINGAPORE, April 9, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — Spring is a season full of promise and adventure, and across Asia, travellers are embracing the warm weather and exploring the vibrant cultures and mesmerising landscapes that the region has to offer.

From the beauty of the cherry blossom season to the lively festivities of Songkran and the poignant remembrance of Qingming, spring has witnessed a remarkable flow of tourists. Trip.com Group, a leading global travel service provider, reveals an increasingly strong traveller interest in uncovering hidden gems among these, along with other latest trends of spring travel in Asia.

Chasing cherry blossoms: peak season for blooms driving travel

Across East Asia, the peak season for cherry blossoms has unfolded in Japan, Korea, and China, drawing domestic and overseas travellers alike for a first-hand glimpse of these pink beauties.

In Japan, cherry blossoms are now in full bloom in many major cities, with pink petals adorning historical sites like Kumamoto Castle and Osaka Castle. Likewise, parks and gardens such as Ueno Park and Shiroyama Park have transformed into a pastel wonderland, drawing visitors in droves.

The historic city of Kyoto, in particular, promises a captivating experience with its blend of stunning natural scenery and rich culture. Arashiyama is the hottest Kyoto attraction this April, with the vintage Sagano Romantic Trains winding through cherry blossom trees and the Hozugawa River Boat Ride offering a unique rafting experience complemented by breathtaking views. Furthermore, cultural sites like Tenryu-ji, Kiyomizu-dera Temple, and Nijo-jo Castle also draw huge interest from tourists as delicate pink petals dress the traditional architecture in an enchanting display of natural beauty.

According to Trip.com Group data, the allure of the Sakuras in Japan continues to attract travellers, with flight bookings seeing a remarkable 90% growth this April compared to last year. Chinese tourists remain the top group of international travellers visiting, followed by tourists from South Korea, Thailand, and Singapore.

To help travellers make the most of their trips, Trip.com has launched a dedicated page for the cherry blossom season, which includes the cherry blossom forecast in Japan with estimated blooming periods and popular viewing spots. The Japan travel guide offers a wealth of information, including tips for entering the country, transportation hacks, eSIM options, relevant flights and nearby hotels, dining options, and fun activities.

Tourists may take advantage of Trip.com’s cherry blossom limited deals for a more immersive experience. Choose from a variety of kimono styles and stroll through Kiyomizu Temple and Gion in Kyoto, or take a day tour to the Izu Shuzenji Temple and the Kinosaki Coast, where cherry blossom watching, strawberry picking, hot springs, and a special lunch await.

From Jeju Island to Seoul, South Korea is also experiencing peak cherry blossom season in the first half of April. In the capital city, iconic spots like the N Seoul Tower, Gyeongbokgung Palace, and Yeouido Hangang Park especially capture tourist interest. But those seeking to discover more of the country are finding their way to Jinhae, renowned for its cherry blossom festival. Other top spots for floral enthusiasts include Ganghwado and the Incheon Grand Park in Incheon.

The journey to chase cherry blossoms continues online. After snapping their perfect shots of cherry blossoms, Trip.com users can post in the vibrant Trip Moments Community using limited-edition cherry blossom stickers. In addition to getting cherry blossom badges, top content creators will have the opportunity to win up to 50,000 Trip Coins (US$500), and two lucky users randomly picked can win as much as 80,000 Trip Coins (US$800).

Qingming: going home and stepping out

The Qingming Festival, or the Tomb-Sweeping Day, is observed by people of Chinese heritage as they show respect to the deceased by cleaning tombs and placing offerings. What’s more, it is also marked by beautiful spring weather that is perfect for going out into nature.

With this year’s Qingming Festival public holiday falling on 4-6 April in mainland China, the country witnessed tremendous growth in travel bookings. Many travellers used this occasion for family reunions and traditional rituals to explore their hometowns or nearby destinations. Trip.com Group witnessed triple-digit growth in local, nearby, and rural travel bookings.

In addition to paying tribute to the departed, unique local experiences also drew huge interest during this short break. Buzzwords like “20 minutes in the park” led to a spike in activities like camping, kite flying, and mountain climbing.

While popular destinations like Shanghai, Beijing, and Hangzhou continued to dominate domestic travel interests, this Qingming Festival witnessed the rise of several other cities especially in the central and western parts of China.

Tianshui in Gansu province, in particular, shot to fame in March as its specialty malatang dish went viral on social media. Compared to its counterparts in Sichuan and Chongqing, malatang in Tianshui uses locally grown peppers that are juicier and more aromatic. Trip.com Group data shows that travel bookings to Tianshui this past Qingming Festival shot up more than 21 times than the same period in 2023.

Similarly, Kaifeng in Henan province drew immense curiosity this April not just for its historical relics but also for the viral live show “Wang Po Matchmaking”. Inspired by the classic novel Water Margin, this show features a “matchmaker” who encourages members of the audience to describe their dream partners on stage and attempts to find matches for them. The show especially spurred travel bookings from nearby cities like Zhengzhou.

Moreover, with flowers like peonies, pear blossoms, and cherry blossoms coming into full bloom, attractions featuring floral landscapes saw heavy traffic during the Qingming Festival. Search volumes doubled for attractions such as Nianhua Bay in Wuxi, the East Lake Cherry Blossom Garden in Wuhan, and the Manhua Manor in Chengdu.

Some travellers, especially millennials, also planned strategically to extend their three-day break. By applying for leave from work on 1-3 April, they could get an eight-day break that allowed for longer trips. For trips overseas, the top destinations included Tokyo, Bangkok, Osaka, Singapore, and Seoul. Theme parks like Universal Studios Japan and Singapore again dominated the top attractions for Chinese travellers, while springtime getaways like Mount Fuji indicated travellers’ eagerness to make the most of the beautiful season.

The Qingming Festival further drew an influx of international travellers to China, as ethnic Chinese visited their ancestral hometowns and travelled around. China’s visa-free policies especially contributed to the growth of inbound tourists. Inbound flight pickup orders via Trip.com grew 218% year on year, with inbound bookings from Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Seoul, Tokyo, and London topping the list.

To inspire international tourists to visit China and explore popular and lesser-known destinations alike, Trip.com launched the SUPER CHINA campaign in April across its Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia sites. This featured attractive deals in hotels, flights, tours & tickets, airport transfer, and trains, with the campaign highlighting the offerings of one city every two weeks.

Songkran: water fun and super deals

Songkran, the Thai New Year, is also just around the corner. This year’s Songkran falls on 13 April, but celebrations will take place for the entire month of April as the festival is part of Thailand’s push to promote its rich culture and traditions worldwide.

One key highlight of the festival will be the Maha Songkran World Water Festival 2024 extravaganza between 11-15 April in Bangkok, with the Mahan Songkran Parade featuring 20 grand processions and more than 1,000 performers. Celebrations will also take place in five other locations, namely Chiang Mai, Khon Kaen, Samut Prakan, Chon Buri, and Phuket.

Trip.com Group data so far shows that Bangkok, Phuket, and Chiang Mai are indeed the hottest destinations for the period around Songkran, with 12 April being the busiest travel day so far. On Trip.com’s platform, the epic Siam Songkran Music Festival on 12-15 April has drawn the most traveller interest. This huge party at Bangkok’s Central Park will bring together world-class DJs and local artists like Martin Garrix, Tiësto, and 22Bullets to offer live music performances with water festivities.

Coinciding with Songkran festivities, Trip.com selected Thailand as the first destination featured in its newly launched SUPER SEA campaign. From 1 to 14 April, customers can enjoy unmissable super deals with at least 20% off at 16 hotels, as well as 1-20% off hot deals at 20 other hotels, in Bangkok, Phuket, Chiang Mai, Pattaya, Koh Samui, and Hat Yai.

To inspire more travellers to enjoy the rich natural and cultural offerings in Southeast Asia, the SUPER SEA campaign will continue into the summer with further promotions in Malaysia, Vietnam, Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, and more. More information about the campaign can be found here.

“This is the first Songkran since it was listed as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2023, and Trip.com is excited to bring travellers around the world to join in the water festivities and immerse themselves in the ancient yet vibrant Thai traditions,” said Ms Diane Cui, General Manager of Trip.com Thailand. “We strive to provide our users with the best value through our super deals. Our comprehensive product offerings, dynamic content ecosystem, and AI-supported travel assistance will further facilitate travellers to fully enjoy their Songkran experience.”

With so much to discover, there has never been a better time to plan a springtime adventure in Asia. Whether you seek tranquillity or exhilaration, the region offers a plethora of captivating experiences that will leave you with memories to cherish for a lifetime. So, pack your bags, follow the call of wanderlust, and let the magic of spring travel captivate your soul.

Is it safe to keep your cellphone in your pocket? Experts explain the risks and what to do if you’re worried.

0

Where is your cellphone right now? If you’re reading this, your phone is probably in your hand. But as soon as you’re done, there’s a good chance you’ll stash it back in one of your pockets, like more than half of Americans, according to one 2017 study. It’s something we do rather mindlessly, but cellphones are high-powered devices that emit a low level of a type of energy known as radiofrequency radiation.

It’s not the sort of radiation that does acute damage to our bodies, but radiation, generally speaking, can be harmful to our cells and health. Experts tend to fall into two camps: those who say there’s nothing to worry about when it comes to cellphone use, and those who are concerned. So should you be keeping your smartphone in your pocket? Here’s what you need to know.

First, what is cellphone radiation?

Cellphones communicate with cellphone towers and one another by using radiofrequency waves, which are a form of electromagnetic radiation. But radiofrequency waves are the least intense form in the electromagnetic radiation spectrum. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re entirely harmless. High-intensity radiofrequency radiation can produce heat and cause elevated body temperatures and even burns, according to the American Cancer Society.

More intense rays, like gamma rays and X-rays, can disrupt atoms by ionizing them. This process — in which an electron is removed from an otherwise stable atom — can, in turn, damage our DNA, and that may lead to cancer, according to the ACS. Radiofrequency radiation, on the other hand, is considered nonionizing and less carcinogenic. However, some research suggests a possible link between radiofrequency radiation from cellphones and higher rates of certain cancers and other health issues.

The ACS, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Cancer Institute all consider cellphones noncarcinogenic and safe, aside from the possibility of the phones overheating. However, the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer considers electromagnetic fields produced by cellphones “possibly carcinogenic” to humans.

Does cellphone radiation cause cancer?

Cellphone radiation doesn’t have the hallmarks of dangerous, carcinogenic radiation. While some research has suggested possible links between cellphone use and higher rates of certain brain cancers, these studies haven’t proved that smartphones actually cause these cancers, and the authors expressed doubts about how accurate people’s reported levels of cellphone use were.

It’s also worth noting that rates of new brain and nervous system cancers have declined since 1990, according to CDC data (the number of new tumors has risen, but only because the population has grown). If cellphones caused brain tumors, rates would likely have risen as smartphone use has, notes Elizabeth Hatch, a Boston University epidemiologist who has studied the link between male fertility and cellphone use.

Devra Davis, founder and president of Environmental Health Trust, tells Yahoo Life she’s worried that there may be a link between the rising rates of colorectal cancer in young people and the proliferation of smartphones, given the timing of each. It’s very hard to say, however, because cellphones “have become so widespread that there is no control group” of people who don’t have cellphones to compare cellphone users’ cancer rates to, says Davis. But as of yet, there’s no proof that cellphone radiation is causing the spike in this type of cancer.

Are there any other health concerns about where you carry your cellphone?

While a few animal studies have suggested that high levels of cellphone radiation could damage the lining of the uterus, eggs, ovarian follicles and embryos and may even harm fetal development, none of these findings have been replicated in humans.

The more pressing concern, according to Davis and other experts, is male fertility. Research shows that high levels of smartphone radiation can “damage the engines of the sperm, called the mitochondria,” explains Davis. “They die three times faster than natural.”

A 13-year study on adult men conducted in Switzerland suggested that cellphone use may be linked to a lower concentration of sperm and lower sperm count. Davis suspects that sperm are particularly vulnerable to the effects of cellphone radiation because “the highest absorption in the body will be into the male reproductive organs” — and the testes in particular — “because there is nothing to protect them.”

Although male infertility is on the rise, there’s simply not enough evidence yet to say whether cellphone radiation is a factor in this trend, much less a cause.

How can you reduce any possible risks?

Some experts say you should keep your smartphone as far away from your body as possible — as often as possible — to reduce potential risks, while others say you don’t need to worry.

Hatch, who studied this exact question — whether keeping a cellphone in a pocket harms male fertility — isn’t terribly concerned. “The important thing is that we really found no association between keeping a phone in one’s front pocket versus elsewhere,” says Hatch. “More research is potentially warranted, but I don’t think there’s a definitive answer.”

If you’re concerned, there are some steps you can take. “Radiation follows the inverse square law: When you double your distance from the radiation, you reduce your exposure by three-quarters,” Dr. Rob Brown, a radiologist and vice president of scientific research and clinical affairs at Environmental Health Trust, tells Yahoo Life. “When your phone is in your pocket, you’re exposed to much more radiation than from the Wi-Fi router across the room or the cellphone tower across the street.”

Brown notes that clothing won’t help, because, unlike ultraviolet radiation from the sun, cellphone radiation can penetrate clothing. Still, finding a way to keep your phone farther away from you will reduce any possible risks.

“The safest way to carry a phone is off,” Brown says. “That may not be functional for many people, but try to keep it off the body, meaning in a fanny pack or murse for men” and in a purse or another bag for women.

Brown and Davis advise keeping phones off when possible, or at least in airplane mode with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi off, which reduces the amount of radiation the device emits, because it’s transmitting fewer electromagnetic signals.

Overloading bins is one of the biggest problems in the trash disposal process. When bins are overfilled, rubbish can spill out, attracting pests and causing unpleasant odors. To avoid overloading, we need to regularly dispose of rubbish in a timely manner and make sure that bins are not too full before they are collected.

Improper Disposal of Hazardous Waste

Hazardous waste, such as chemicals, batteries, and electronic waste, can be dangerous if not disposed of properly. These items need to be disposed of separately from regular rubbish to ensure that they don’t pose a risk to human health or the environment.

Littering

Littering is another common problem that can disrupt the trash removal process. When people litter, rubbish accumulates in public spaces, causing blockages and unpleasant odors. It’s important to educate people about the importance of keeping public spaces clean and encourage them to dispose of their rubbish properly.

Unauthorized Dumping

Unauthorized dumping is another problem that can interfere with disposal success. This occurs when people illegally dump rubbish in public spaces, such as parks, sidewalks, or bodies of water. This not only creates unsightly messes but also can harm wildlife and the environment.

Lack of Recycling

Recycling is a crucial part of the rubbish disposal process as it helps to reduce waste and preserve natural resources. However, if people are not properly educated about the benefits of recycling, they may not take part in this important process. We need to encourage people to recycle and provide clear information about what can and cannot be recycled.

Inadequate Collection Schedules

Inadequate collection schedules can also derail the entire procedure. If collections are not frequent enough, rubbish can accumulate, leading to blockages and unpleasant odors. Because of that, having a regular collection schedule in place matters. We also need to make sure that rubbish is collected frequently enough to avoid these problems.

Poorly Maintained Rubbish Collection Vehicles

Poorly maintained rubbish collection vehicles can pose a problem not only for the collectors but also for the homeowners. If vehicles are not properly maintained, they may break down, causing delays in collections and leading to overflowing bins. This is why companies have to regularly maintain rubbish collection vehicles to ensure that they are in good working order.

Final Thoughts

The rubbish disposal process is an important part of maintaining clean and hygienic environments. As evident above, so many circumstances can derail the process and leave us with more trash to deal with than necessary. To ensure success in this feat, it’s important to address these issues and take steps to prevent them from happening. If you need further help from a professional rubbish removal company, don’t hesitate to contact us.

Eclipse flights swarm airports: ‘We had to close the runway to park planes’

Monday’s solar eclipse is giving some of the country’s smaller airports their moment in the sun.

The Federal Aviation Administration reported arriving flights at airports from Burlington, Vermont, to southern Illinois were briefly halted Monday morning ahead of the total eclipse.

Such disruptions are routinely caused by bad weather and heavy traffic in big-city hubs, but high demand for prime views of the phenomenon jammed some smaller airports on Monday. The best views of the solar eclipse in the U.S. span from Texas through Illinois, Kentucky and Ohio to northwestern New York and Maine, according to NASA.

FAA traffic adjustments give airports time to catch up and avoid airplane parking jams on the ground.

“We had to close the runway to park planes,” Alyssa Connell, head of operations at Southern Illinois Airport in Murphysboro, Illinois, told CNBC. The airport, which has three runways, took reservations for eclipse flights and on Friday reached its maximum threshold for 230 small propeller aircraft and about 45 larger jets and larger turboprops. “This is by far the most aircraft we’ve ever seen.”

Patrick Leahy Burlington International Airport in Vermont is scheduled to receive between 100 and 130 general aviation planes on Monday, said Dave Carman, deputy director of aviation operations. It’s also expecting some scheduled commercial passenger jet traffic.

“It’s the most we’ve seen in a day,” Carman said. “It’s going to be hectic getting out,” he said.

The eclipse was called out as a major event on the FAA’s morning planning call at its command center in Warrenton, Virginia, according to an agency spokeswoman. Other common obstacles include presidential travel, severe weather or major sports and entertainment events.

The FAA had previously warned pilots about possible disruptions and heavy traffic at a host of airports on or near the eclipse’s path.

Delta Air Lines sold special eclipse flights during which passengers could view it from the sky, one from Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport to Detroit and another from Austin, Texas, to Detroit.

Other airlines have called out flights that could offer views of the eclipse along the “path of totality.” United Airlines said bookings to San Antonio more than doubled around the eclipse compared with the same dates last year and surged in Cleveland and Little Rock, Arkansas.

The eclipse is expected to be a boon for hotels, house rentals and other businesses as tourists swarm in.

Spirit Airlines will defer Airbus orders, furlough 260 pilots in race to shore up liquidity

Spirit Airlines said Monday that it will defer deliveries of new Airbus planes and furlough about 260 pilots as it tries to boost liquidity.

“Of course, these steps aren’t ones we want to take but they’re necessary to ensure a strong and profitable future for Spirit,” CEO Ted Christie said in a note to staff Monday.

Spirit said it will defer all Airbus planes it has on order that were scheduled to be delivered from the second quarter of 2025 through the end of 2026. It will instead take delivery of them in 2030 and 2031. The deferrals do not include the direct-lease planes — one apiece in the second and third quarter of next year — nor scheduled deliveries for 2027 through 2029, Spirit said.

The budget airline said the deferrals would boost its liquidity by about $340 million over the next two years.

“Deferring these aircraft gives us the opportunity to reset the business and focus on the core airline while we adjust to changes in the competitive environment,” Christie said in a news release.

Miramar, Florida-based Spirit has been looking for ways to boost liquidity and convince investors that it is on track to do so as it struggles with the the grounding of many of its Airbus planes because of a Pratt & Whitney engine recall. Its planned acquisition by JetBlue Airways fell apart earlier this year after a federal judge ruled in January that the deal would be anti-competitive.

The airline said March 29 that it will receive monthly payments in compensation for the grounded Pratt & Whitney engines through the end of 2024, which would lift liquidity between $150 million and $200 million.

The pilot furloughs would take effect in September, Spirit said Monday. The airline already had leaves of absence in place for flight attendants and there is “no plan” for cabin crew furloughs, their union, the Association of Flight Attendants told members Monday. Spirit is closing its Atlantic City, New Jersey, crew base and staff will be reassigned.

Other airlines have adjusted their hiring and training in recent weeks, citing a scarcity of aircraft — a sharp change from the pilot shortage that worsened when travel demand snapped back after the worst of the pandemic. United Airlines pilots’ union late last month said the company is offering unpaid time off for pilots next month because of late-arriving planes from Boeing.

The Air Line Pilots Association, Spirit pilots’ union, didn’t immediately comment on the furloughs.

Conducted in collaboration with researchers from Acibadem Mehmet Ali Aydinlar University, Marmara University, Namik Kemal University, and Istanbul University, Türkiye, the study result was recently published in European Radiology, the flagship journal of the European Society of Radiology (ESR).

This comprehensive study encompassed over 22,621 mammograms from 8,825 women over a decade. Utilizing Lunit INSIGHT MMG, Lunit’s AI-powered solution for breast cancer detection, the research aimed to assess its proficiency in early cancer detection within a breast cancer screening program.

A pivotal finding of the study is Lunit INSIGHT MMG’s potential to reduce workload by nearly 70% through a hybrid workflow scenario that categorizes mammograms into immediate review, further evaluation, or no action needed based on AI-assessed risk scores, alongside a 30.5% boost in cancer detection accuracy. This indicates a substantial step forward in improving the efficiency of breast cancer screening programs, potentially enabling broader screening coverage and reducing the burden on healthcare systems.

The study further revealed that the AI system identified 51.72% of interval cancers, and 50% of missed cancers. Additionally, the study illustrated that using Lunit INSIGHT MMG as a second reader could potentially expedite the diagnosis by an average of nearly 30 months, compared to traditional screening methods.

“This study not only reaffirms Lunit INSIGHT MMG’s efficacy in detecting breast cancer early but also illuminates its impact on operational efficiency and economic value within healthcare systems,” said Brandon Suh, CEO of Lunit. “For years, most of the conversation around AI in medical diagnostics has centered on its medical efficacy. However, this research showcases how AI can streamline workflows, reduce the radiological burden, and potentially offer significant cost and time savings. As we move forward, our focus will be on harnessing these dual benefits of AI – enhancing medical outcomes while also driving economic efficiency. We’ll expand our research and development efforts to further integrate AI in ways that not only maximize the quality of care but also the sustainability of healthcare systems.”
