HONG KONG, March 20, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — HOFA Gallery and Digital Art Fair are thrilled to announce the unveiling of multi-award-winning AI-artist Sougwen Chung’s new showcase ‘Us in Another Form’, set to debut at Adrian Cheng’s iconic cultural and luxury retail landmark K11 MUSEA, Hong Kong.  This highly anticipated exhibition is an official part of the annual Art Karnival and will be open to the public daily 26 March to 19 May 2024 at 6F, K11 Art & Culture Centre, K11 MUSEA.

Sougwen Chung, a Chinese-Canadian artist, stands at the forefront of pushing the boundaries of human-machine collaboration in the art realm. Recognised as one of TIME100’s esteemed top 100 AI innovators, a MIT Media Lab fellow and Google Artist in Residence, Sougwen’s work exemplifies the dynamic intersections among art, technology and science. Through an innovative approach, Sougwen has developed and constructed robots known as D.O.U.G. (Drawing Operations Unit Generation) to augment the creative process.

The forthcoming K11 MUSEA showcase ‘Us In Another Form’ will exhibit Sougwen’s diverse body of work that investigates a mode of working with human-machine interconnections beyond mere extension. These extensions include biosensors, computer vision, virtual reality and spatial technology that catalyse a path of hybridity, as Sougwen speculates on worlds beyond the binary constructs of human and machine.  The new bold artworks not only captivate but also provoke thought, defying the notion of AI as a mere tool, seamlessly merging humanity and technology, with robotic companions serving as dynamic instruments.

K11 MUSEA is a pioneering cultural retail landmark located on the Victoria Dockside harbourfront of Tsim Sha Tsui in Hong Kong. Designed by entrepreneur Adrian Cheng, it aims to enrich the daily lives of visitors through creativity, culture and innovation. Since opening its doors in 2019, K11 MUSEA has quickly become a symbol of cultural retail, offering immersive experiences in art, culture, nature and commerce, in response to the growing consumer demand for such experiences.

Speaking recently at the TIME100 Impact Awards, Artist Sougwen Chung states, “Traditional forms of creativity must shape, but not be replaced, by technological development. Building our own tools and AI systems for art can help us sit with the existential questions posed by new technologies, in a way that fear and hope can be held in the mind at the same time.”

HOFA Gallery, founded in London by Elio D’Anna and Simonida Pavicevic in 2012 specialises in contemporary art by established and emerging international artists.  D’Anna shares his passion for the forthcoming exhibition, stating, “The showcase of Sougwen Chung’s project ‘Us In Another Form’ during Art Week Hong Kong and the K11 Art Karnival, represents a groundbreaking celebration of human-machine collaboration, highlighting the transformative power of technology in expanding the horizons of artistic innovation and expression.”

In addition to the featured works at K11 MUSEA, Sougwen will also be launching a new body of work, titled ‘GENESIS’ at Hong Kong’s prestigious Soho House. ‘GENESIS’ is an ongoing project exploring the evolution of the drawn line and the robotic form. It begins with a collection of speculative machine constructions inspired by living organisms. ‘GENESIS’ forms are sculpted through a bespoke VR process and collected as movement data, contributing to a groundbreaking new spatial dataset. The ‘GENESIS’ dataset will serve as the foundation for an upcoming AI system, representing the next generation of human and machine collaboration.

Abortion rates in the U.S. at their highest in a decade, finds new report. Here’s what to know.

The rate of abortions rose by 10% in 2023, compared to 2020, according to a new report from the reproductive health organization, Guttmacher Institute. The rise comes after the Supreme Court struck down federal legal protection for abortions when it overturned Roe v. Wade in the controversial Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization case in 2022. Abortion opponents celebrated the decision, believing it would lead to fewer people terminating their pregnancies. But the new data shows that the opposite happened in the first year post-Roe. Abortion rates instead hit a 10-year high, with more than a million occurring for the first time since 2012. Here’s what to know.

📈 The national abortion rate was rising before Roe fell

Last year, some 1,026,690 abortions were performed in hospitals and clinics or happened outside of clinical settings using the abortion medications mifepristone and misoprostol, according to that report. And that number is likely an undercount, as it only includes legal abortions.

That means that there were 15.7 abortions for every 1,000 women between ages 14 and 44 (the range classified as “reproductive age”). That figure had been steadily declining for nearly 30 years, until 2019, when it began to slowly tick back up, a trend that continued through 2020.

But it seemed the trend might be reversed after Roe was overturned in 2022 and abortion restrictions and bans were enacted in several states, leaving many women who wanted to get an abortion unable to do so and in some cases, unable to travel elsewhere to get a medication abortion or procedure.

🇺🇸 Where abortion rates are rising — and why

Even though the national rate of abortions is rising, there are actually two different trends happening. Among states without total bans, there was a 25% increase in abortions provided in 2023, including steep increases in states that border those with abortion bans in place.

The number of abortions in New Mexico, for example, surged by 257% between 2020 and 2023, according to the new report. New Mexico borders both Oklahoma and Texas, states where abortion is banned with only rare exceptions. Similar jumps in abortions occurred in Virginia (76%), North Carolina (41%) and Illinois (72%) — all of which border states with strict abortion restrictions or bans.

It’s clear from the Guttmacher report that these increases are largely driven by people traveling across state lines to get abortion care. In Illinois, out-of-town patients accounted for more than two-thirds (68%) of the increase in abortions.

By contrast, the number of abortions has fallen precipitously in the 14 states with trigger laws that went into effect after the Dobbs decision, as well as in other states than have restricted abortion access since 2020. Wisconsin, which had a trigger law in the books, saw abortion numbers plummet by 87%, as rates in neighboring Illinois went up.

🩺 What an expert says: It’s a story of ‘two Americas’

The rising number of abortions is a continuation of a trend that began as early as 2018, Dr. Alison Norris, professor of epidemiology at the Ohio State University and co-chair of the Society of Family Planning, tells Yahoo Life. But it may seem counterintuitive that this increase has continued despite abortion bans being enacted in 14 states.

“What we really see is a picture of two Americas: a context where abortion is banned and access to that form of reproductive care is eliminated” within the state, and “a stark increase in abortion where it’s permitted and particularly where access has improved.” She refers to the former as a “public health crisis” and the other as a “public health triumph,” bolstered by an increase in awareness and funding in states that still allow abortion.

Norris stresses that just because abortion numbers are going up doesn’t mean that there aren’t still people who need abortions and can’t get them, or who don’t bear considerable costs in crossing state lines to get an abortion. “It would be a misunderstanding to think that if the number of abortions is high, then everyone who needed to get an abortion was able to get one — that is definitely not true,” she says. “It’s kind of an invisible problem,” because the people who can’t access abortion care don’t wind up in the clinics where researchers like her would count them, Norris explains.

However, rising abortion rates reflect better access to medication abortions. Previous Guttmacher research found that medication abortions accounted for nearly two-thirds of all abortions in the U.S. in 2023, up from 53% in 2020. This is thanks in part to rules about prescribing these drugs via telemedicine being relaxed during COVID, and in part to laws protecting medical providers who prescribe them in many states. And now, massive pharmacy chains CVS and Walgreens have begun selling one of those abortion medications (mifepristone), meaning it will be available in more places. These policy changes have, in turn, improved access and helped reduce costs for patients and providers alike. “Those are all really important things to help people have access to care — people who live in rural areas or don’t have a car or can’t travel for an abortion,” Norris says.

But access to abortion care is an ever-shifting landscape. One of the two pills involved in a medication abortion, mifepristone, is at the center of one of many political battles over abortion. The Supreme Court will hear arguments on Tuesday, March 26, in a case challenging whether policies allowing the drug to be more widely prescribed are constitutional.

Oprah Winfrey opens up about her weight loss journey in new special

0

Oprah Winfrey has had a very public discourse when it comes to her weight over the course of her career as a television host, producer, actress and author. In a new special airing on ABC on Monday night, Shame, Blame and the Weight Loss Revolution, the 70-year-old star opens up about her weight loss journey — from the body shaming she’s encountered to her decision to take weight loss medication and the impact it’s had on her.

“I took on the shame that the world gave to me,” Winfrey — who last month announced that she’s stepping down from the WeightWatchers board — shares in the special. “For 25 years, making fun of my weight was national sport.”

One incident in particular stung. “I’ll never forget a day in 1990 I saw myself on the cover of TV Guide’s best and worst dressed list,” Winfrey recounts. “I read the headline that Mr. Blackwell, the tastemaker of the time, called me ‘bumpy, lumpy and downright dumpy.’ I was ridiculed on every late night talk show for 25 years and tabloid covers for 25 years.” Headlines called her “fatter than ever,” she adds in the special.

The comments about her weight pushed her to slim down, Winfrey says. “In an effort to combat all the shame, I starved myself for nearly five months and then wheeled out that wagon of fat that the internet will never let me forget,” she says in reference to the November 1988 episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show in which the host proudly announced that she fit into size 10 Calvin Klein jeans for the first time in seven years. Her triumph was short-lived, however. “After losing 67 pounds on a liquid diet, the next day, y’all, the very next day, I started to gain it back.”

In the decades since, Winfrey hasn’t shied from discussing her figure, whether it’s meant teaming up with WeightWatchers or getting frank about gaining weight back in articles like the 2009 O cover story “How did I let this happen again?” Her motivation for hosting tonight’s special, she says, is to address the impact of weight loss medications like Ozempic and Wegovy and acknowledge that obesity is “a disease, not a character flaw.” Destigmatizing people’s bodies — and what they do with them — is paramount.

“I come to this conversation in the hope that we can start releasing the stigma and the shame and the judgment, to stop shaming other people for being overweight or how they choose to lose or not lose weight,” she says. “And more importantly, to stop shaming ourselves.”

Read on to see what else Winfrey reveals about her personal journey in the special — and why experts think it’s important that she’s sharing her story.

What does Winfrey say about using weight loss medication?

For the first time since revealing to People that she’s taking a weight loss medication (she hasn’t named which one) to maintain her weight, Winfrey gives some insight into her experience in Shame, Blame and the Weight Loss Revolution. The special also features experts weighing in on these medications’ popularity.

“I use it as a tool, also combined with hiking three to five miles a day or running,” she says, noting that a combination of interventions has worked best for her. “It’s also weight resistance training and all the things that go along with eating a healthy diet.”

The medication has also helped her experience fewer intrusive thoughts about food, aka “food noise.” “All these years, I thought all of the people who never had to diet were just using their willpower and they were, for some reason, stronger than me,” she says. “And now I realize, y’all weren’t even thinking about the food. You weren’t obsessing about it. That is the big thing I learned.”

Prior to using the medication, Winfrey says, she would think about what she was eating for lunch while eating breakfast, and would stress about food leading up to holiday celebrations. “Now I can eat a half a bagel and be fine,” she says. “I have blamed myself because you think, I’m smart enough to figure this out. And then to hear all along that it’s you fighting your brain. … There is now a sense of hope.”

What experts say

Winfrey says that she wanted to create this special in an effort to provide “hope for people like me, who have struggled for years with being overweight or with obesity.” Experts in the field believe she’s on the right track.

“By sharing her story about living with obesity and accessing care, Oprah is helping lead an important conversation about obesity as a chronic disease and women’s health issue, and the importance of removing the shame and stigma around obesity,” Kristal Hartman, national board chair of the Obesity Action Coalition, tells Yahoo Life.

Dr. Katherine Saunders, obesity medicine physician at Weill Cornell Medicine and co-founder of Intellihealth for metabolic health, says Winfrey’s experience alone provides valuable insight. “If Oprah, who has all the resources in the world for chefs, trainers, etc., requires anti-obesity medication to manage her obesity, what does that tell you? It’s clearly not just about diet and exercise.”

“Oprah has the credibility, the platform and the ability to get the message out that obesity is something that is not an individual’s fault and that it’s something that can be treated if people want it to be treated,” Dr. Melanie Jay, director of NYU Langone’s Comprehensive Program on Obesity, told Yahoo Life following Winfrey’s “State of Weight” conversation for Oprah Daily last fall.

Most importantly, Winfrey says she is leaving space for all points of view. “For people who feel happy and healthy and celebrating life in a bigger body and don’t want the medications, I say, bless you,” she says at the end of Shame, Blame and the Weight Loss Revolution. “And for all the people who believe diet and exercise is the best and only way to lose excess weight, bless you too, if that works for you. And for the people who think [medication] could be the relief and support and freedom … that you’ve been looking for your whole life, bless you.”

At the workshop “Beyond the First-line Prenatal Screening” held in Singapore on March 15, 2024, 70 obstetricians and leading geneticists from Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines shared about the pathogenesis, clinical burden, and new evidence in prediction of Severe Pregnancy Syndromes. Dr. Anna Belen I. Alensuela, Board Member of Philippine Obstetrical and Gynecology Society, cited studies where more than 15% of pregnancies suffer from great obstetrical syndromes causing severe adverse short and long-term outcomes for both the mother and fetus1. These syndromes are the clinical endpoints of several underlying mechanisms including deep placentation dysfunctions.

“Beyond the First-Line Prenatal Screening” scientific workshop held in Singapore on Mar 15, 2024.

“According to current guidelines, screening for the risk of premature birth, pre-eclampsia and gestational diabetes usually takes place in the later stages of pregnancy, while identifying high-risk patients early in the first trimester help in better identification and management of pregnancies under modern care model.” – shared Prof. Dr. Noroyono Wibowo, Head of Maternal Fetal Medicine of University of Indonesia.

Associate Professor Dr. Matthew Warren Kemp from the National University of Singapore presented research data demonstrating that biomarkers in maternal blood may be used as effective prediction models for pathological risks in severe pregnancy syndromes including preeclampsia and chorioamnionitis. This could potentially lead to advancements in early detection of pregnancy complications before clinical presentation.

To address these considerations, Dr. Hoa from HCMC Medical Genetics Institute, co-founder of Gene Solutions shared preliminary data of multi-omic biomakers for early prediction of pregnancy complications and announced the multi-center research program “Building and Evaluating an Early Prediction Model for Pregnancy Complications: Pre-eclampsia, Preterm Birth, and Gestational Diabetes in Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT)”. MANILA, Philippines, March 18, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — Bloomberry Resorts Corporation (BRC), owner and operator of Solaire Resort Entertainment City, is formally opening its second integrated resort (IR) – Solaire Resort North – in late May this year.

The new resort located in Quezon City is expected to solidify Solaire’s position as a leader in luxury entertainment while offering an elevated resort experience to clientele in the metropolis’ northern areas.

At 1.5 hectares, Solaire Resort North is a USD 1 billion investment that is the first of its kind in the city. The new Quezon City resort stands at 38 floors, offering a panoramic view of the urban landscape and bustling metropolis, while delivering a blend of modern sophistication and class.

The luxe property will offer Solaire’s signature service excellence, world-class facilities, and an elevated kind of lifestyle. Like its parent property, Solaire Resort North is an architectural marvel brought to life by esteemed architecture firms Aedas and Casas+Architects. The immersive, contemporary interiors are the creative breakthroughs of Habitus Design Group.

“We are excited and proud to share our new property and resort,” says Enrique K. Razon Jr., BRC Chairman and Chief Executive Officer.

He adds: “From a decade ago when we opened Solaire Resort Entertainment City, it has always been our mission to provide a fresh yet indulgent brand of luxury that has not been experienced in the Philippines before.  With Solaire Resort North, we uphold the same mission in the hope that the property’ presence and operation will support Quezon City’s endeavors to enhance and promote tourism, generate employment for Filipinos, and further attract opportunities for economic and social investments. At the same time, we anticipate that our presence in Quezon City will positively impact our growth, widen our market footprint, and reinforce our brand’s strength.”

The rise of Solaire Resort North is a strategic expansion that aims to bring the signature Solaire brand of excellence closer to Metro Manila’s northern residents. Solaire Resort North is the only luxury resort with five-star facilities and amenities. It unveils 526 opulent guest rooms and suites; 2,669 electronic gaming machines; and 163 tables across four casino levels.  It also offers a world of culinary experiences through its signature restaurants including contemporary Italian cuisine at Finestra Italian Steakhouse, fresh Japanese delicacies at Yakumi, and authentic Chinese fare at Red Lantern. There are also casual dining options featuring regional Filipino, Asian and international flavors. Bars and lounges offer a wide selection of spirits and cocktails.

Upscale event venues with international standards for size and capacity are available, as are holistic wellness facilities with a spa, saunas, plunge pools, and state-of-the art gym.

Solaire Resort North also has family-oriented spaces such as a dedicated pool area for children and an interactive Kids Club.

A special feature of the resort is a curated art program and display comprised of celebrated names in the local and international art scenes, providing highlights to the resort’s spaces.

“Quezon City is a highly urbanized city with a population largely comprised of locals with a wide range of demographic interests. We saw an opportunity to provide more exclusive experiences not just to our existing Northern clientele but to a larger untapped market. We want to bring the signature Solaire Experience closer to our valued guests, and introduce what and who we are as a brand to a larger audience,” says Thomas Arasi, President and Chief Operating Officer of BRC, Solaire Resort Entertainment City, and Solaire Resort North.

Razon is a staunch champion of the Filipino, which is very evident in Solaire Resort North. Its entrance and investment into the city has created 4,200 direct employment opportunities.

BRC changed the game and pioneered the transformation of the local IR industry, bringing with it a distinct kind of luxury for gaming, entertainment, gastronomic offerings, and lifestyle amenities. Solaire set the standard in the casino and hospitality spaces with its first-of-its-kind facilities and unique experiences.  Furthermore, Solaire established the country as a contender in the international IR arena being the only fully Filipino-owned and operated IR that has received multiple distinctions from global award-giving bodies. Solaire Resort North is seen to provide impetus to this distinction of being a world acclaimed Filipino IR brand.

More than 7,000 Amazon shoppers have given this tape a five-star rating.

“I installed this on my hardwood stairs to make it safer for my dog whose front leg was recently amputated,” shared a doting dog mom. “She definitely is more secure going up and down the stairs, and the clear tape blends very well with the hardwood. Bonus, I feel safer going up and down the stairs, also! If you have ever used adhesive paper or window film, this is much easier to install, and repositioning when I went a bit crooked was very easy. I recommend using a roller to make sure you have good adhesion.”

“Bought this for my mom for her ramp,” a caring daughter wrote. “She acted like I was crazy. Later she told

“I had tripped on the floor of the exit to my garage,” wrote a careful shopper. “As a female senior citizen that is not good. I purchased and applied this to the transition of the garage to the driveway floor and you can’t miss it. Very very helpful item.”

“Helps folks see the stairs to prevent falls,” wrote a five-star fan. “Really makes the wooden stair steps easier to see and safer as well. We also used the tape to mark small step-ups from different levels of the boardwalk. Easy to install.”
