Explore More of Japan: Expanded JR EAST PASS Opens Access to the Underexplored Tohoku Region

0

New rail pass expands coverage across eastern Japan, making it easier for international travelers to explore Tohoku’s seasonal landscapes, festivals, and cultural destinations.

TOKYO, March 17, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — East Japan Railway Company (JR East) has announced the launch of a newly expanded JR EAST PASS, available from March 14, 2026. Tohoku, comprising six prefectures in northern Honshu, is emerging as one of Japan’s most compelling year-round destinations for travelers venturing beyond the major metropolitan hubs. However, it currently accounts for just 1.5 percent of overnight stays by inbound visitors. Recognizing the significant potential for further growth, JR East aims to increase that share to 5 percent by 2034 by improving rail accessibility and encouraging deeper regional exploration.

The new JR EAST PASS replaces both the former JR EAST PASS (Tohoku area) and JR EAST PASS (Nagano, Niigata area) with a single consolidated pass that offers unlimited access to reserved seats in ordinary cars across all JR East lines, including Shinkansen, limited express, express, local, and rapid services. Coverage also includes select partner railways, such as Tokyo Monorail, and regional operators, ensuring smooth airport access and regional connectivity.

The pass is available in two formats:

  • 5 consecutive days – ¥35,000 (Child: ¥17,500)
  • 10 consecutive days – ¥50,000 (Child: ¥25,000)

*Note: Adult (12 years and older) / Child (6 to 11 years old)

Unlocking Tohoku

The JR EAST PASS unlocks multi-region travel, making Tohoku’s year-round attractions more accessible than ever for inbound travelers. In spring, travelers can venture northwards, utilizing the 10-day pass to chase the cherry blossom season in April at spectacular sites such as Miharu Takizakura in Fukushima and Hirosaki Park in Aomori. Alternatively, they can escape the heat and humidity of summer in Tokyo to explore Tohoku’s cooler coastlines and mountain villages. Summer also brings celebration across the region, with famous festivals, from the Aomori Nebuta Festival’s huge illuminated floats to the vibrant streamers of the Sendai Tanabata Festival in Miyagi. In the fall, foliage paints the mountain landscapes a kaleidoscope of color, while winter transforms locations such as Yamagata’s Zao Onsen and Iwate’s Appi Kogen into ‘Japow’ powder-snow paradises.

The unified JR EAST PASS offers a flexible, cost-effective solution for travelers planning multi-city itineraries across eastern Japan. Destinations such as Nagano, known for its alpine landscapes and winter sports, and Niigata, celebrated for its coastal scenery and sake breweries, are firm favorites with international visitors. The pass also includes Tokyo and the surrounding prefectures of Gunma, Kanagawa, and Chiba, as well as parts of Shizuoka, offering access to hot spring towns, mountain retreats, and coastal destinations within easy reach of the capital.

With the newly broadened coverage, travelers can now continue north into Tohoku, reaching cities such as Aomori, Akita, and Sendai, without purchasing multiple regional tickets. Journeys between Tokyo and these destinations can entail substantial transport costs when purchased individually, and reserving seats further enhances convenience during peak travel seasons.

The expansion reflects JR East’s broader strategy to encourage travelers to move beyond established hubs and support more balanced regional tourism growth across eastern Japan.

[Ayumi Utagawa], Project Manager of East Japan Railway Company, said:

“As global interest in Japan continues to rise, we want to support more balanced tourism growth and sustainable regional revitalization. The JR EAST PASS removes barriers to deeper exploration, allowing travelers to experience the full richness of regional Japan, from its metropolises to its rural communities, onsen towns, and expansive landscapes. This region offers remarkable natural beauty and cultural richness across all four seasons, yet it remains underrepresented in many itineraries. We sincerely hope you will discover the Japan that is still unknown to many through the “JR EAST PASS.”

Additional Benefits

JR EAST PASS holders can also take advantage of JRE Rewards, offering hundreds of discounts and special offers at stations, restaurants, and local shops across eastern Japan when travelers present their pass.

JRE Rewards: https://www.jreast.co.jp/en/multi/jreastrewards/

Simplified Purchasing

The pass can be purchased through the JR-EAST Train Reservation online platform, JR EAST Travel Service Centers, major stations within the coverage area, and participating overseas travel agencies. The expanded JR EAST PASS is available to all non-Japanese passport holders, regardless of visa status, including foreign residents living in Japan.

In addition, several other rail products were updated on March 14, 2026:

  • JR East–South Hokkaido Rail Pass (6 days, ¥40,000) – Expanded to include Niigata.
  • Hokuriku Arch Pass (7 days, ¥35,000) – Expanded to include the Tokyo metropolitan area, Chuo Line, and Oito Line.

TSA officers skip work as paychecks stop during shutdown, airports face chaos nationwide

0

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

As the partial government shutdown continues to drag on, Transportation Security Administration officers are not getting their paychecks due to the lapse in funding at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

Over the weekend, airports across the country faced long security delays, with TSA officers calling out of work.

There was a national callout rate of 10.19% on Sunday, a TSA spokesperson told Fox News Digital — that’s the highest rate the agency has seen.

AIRPORT SECURITY STRAIN DURING SHUTDOWN GROWS AS UNPAID TSA OFFICERS WARN, ‘WE’RE HURTING’

Videos circulating of the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas show passengers standing in long lines outside.

The airport itself posted video on its X account on Saturday showing travelers lined up at 4:30 a.m.

“We’re expecting a record-breaking volume of people — there are about 38K of you flying out today,” the caption said.

“Please arrive at least 2.5 hours prior to your flight’s departure for domestic.”

Passengers were waiting for 80 minutes on Sunday and just over an hour on Saturday.

The highest peak wait times seen in Austin were on March 13 at 90 minutes.

On Sunday, LaGuardia Airport (LGA) in New York City faced wait times of nearly three hours, with callout rates of 25.84%, a TSA spokesperson told Fox News.

Not far away, John F. Kennedy Airport (JFK) had a 28.2% callout rate, while Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) in New Jersey had a 13.83% callout rate.

Callouts during the shutdown through Sunday averaged 10.24% at EWR, 21.40% at JFK and 12.68% at LGA.

Over 300 airport security officers have left TSA since the start of the DHS shutdown, with unscheduled absences, a TSA official confirmed to Fox News Digital.

American travel website The Points Guy posted a video of Austin airport lines and captioned the post: “It’s the TSA Hunger Games at many airports across the country.”

The post continued, “Never settle for a long line,” adding a few tips it felt travelers should know.

“There are multiple entry points and sometimes CLEAR or PreCheck can be long. I got through Touchless TSA PreCheck in 2 minutes,” the group suggested. “You can opt in to Touchless ID ASAP in your airline loyalty app.”

The Points Guy’s account also suggested passengers ask an employee in a red vest to point out the shortest line.

“Explain if you’re TSA Pre/CLEAR/Touchless. They are helpful, especially if you have kids, and they have lines for those with children or accommodations,” the post continued.

Finally, passengers were advised to “be nice! Everyone is stressed, and TSA agents have missed a paycheck. Even if you have to wait, don’t take it out on frontline officers.”

Deondre White, a TSA officer at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in D.C., told Fox News Digital last week that officers are “financially trying to do the best that they can.”

White said that thanks to the financial support of his own family, he’s been able “to show up” for his job.

“I’m thankful for my family to be able to come to work and be able to provide gas [to travel to work] because the gas prices have been rising,” he said. “However, there are a lot of officers here who do not have those resources or family commitments from others [to help them out].”

He added, “When we’re here, we will do our best as always. We have a crucial mission. We do take that very seriously.”

Developer-favorite desktop robot now available to more consumers worldwide through AliExpress Anniversary Sale

LOS ANGELES, March 17, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Reachy Mini, the open-source desktop robot that has captivated the developer community, is now available to global consumers on AliExpress, coinciding with the platform’s Anniversary Sale promotion. This extension marks an important step in expanding Reachy Mini beyond the open-source developer community to a broader consumer audience across key markets including the United States, Europe, South Korea, Japan and Brazil.

Developed within the Hugging Face ecosystem, a leading open-source AI platform, Reachy Mini is a flagship embodied AI project designed for human-AI interaction, creative coding, and hands-on experimentation. Reachy Mini has earned strong recognition among AI researchers and developers worldwide. Now, through AliExpress, the robot is becoming more broadly accessible to consumers interested in exploring the next wave of AI-powered robotics.

The addition of Reachy Mini reflects AliExpress’ broader push to attract innovative technology products and brands. Seeed Studio, the hardware manufacturing partner behind Reachy Mini, selected AliExpress as its consumer market launchpad.

“AliExpress has made a strong commitment to supporting premium hard tech products, which aligns perfectly with Seeed Studio’s mission,” said Joey Jiang, VP of Global Sales and Marketing at Seeed Studio. “As an open-source hardware provider focused on emerging technologies, we have built a technology ecosystem based on open-source hardware, AI-driven capabilities, and cross-domain co-creation. The Anniversary Sale gives us a rare opportunity to tap into global demand and introduce Reachy Mini to a wider audience.”

The timing comes amid growing visibility for Reachy Mini. At CES 2026, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang featured Reachy Mini in his keynote address, demonstrating the desktop robot to a global audience and signaling that the era of embodied AI has arrived. The spotlight from one of the world’s most-watched tech stages has helped drive surging interest and pre-order demand for the compact robot.

From March 16 through March 25, Reachy Mini will be available in stock – no pre-orders required. Seeed Studio’s official AliExpress store will release limited units daily throughout the promotional period, giving consumers worldwide a chance to own one of the most talked-about robots in the embodied AI space.

Alex Johnston makes cheeky gag as new statue unveiled at South Sydney headquarters

0

Alex Johnston has given the strongest indication yet he could finish his career at the PNG Chiefs, with South Sydney unlikely to stand in the way of the record-breaking tryscorer.

Fresh off breaking Ken Irvine’s mark on Friday night, Johnston on Monday had a statue of him unveiled at Rabbitohs headquarters.

Made in Thailand three years ago with the financial backing of Souths supporter Danny Taibel, the life-sized monument has sat in storage ever since.

Johnston admitted on Monday breaking Irvine’s mark of 212 tries had been on his mind since the end of 2022, before an achilles injury in 2024 threatened his shot.

The 31-year-old gave the statue the tick of approval, while joking he would now become a victim of bird faeces outside Heffron Park.

“The majority of my footy career has been overwhelmingly positive, but along the way a few fans have shit on me,” Johnston quipped.

“There have been a few coaches who have shit on me, the media has shit on me – now the pigeons can shit on me.”

Johnston’s feat also attracted a letter from Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape, along with celebrations across the country.

Of Torres Strait Islander and PNG descent, Johnston has played 12 Tests for the Kumuls since 2019.

The winger is off contract next year, and will likely be a priority target for the Chiefs when they enter in 2028.

“They just love rugby league so much over there, the Chiefs, every week they’ll get massive support,” Johnston said.

“It’s something I probably want to be a part of.

“Obviously, I’d love to stay at Souths. But the footy over there, I think everyone needs to experience it. I fall in love with the game of footy going over there.”

Asked how much he had to weigh up over the coming year, Johnston admitted there were emotional lures both ways.

“It’d be cool to be the first signature over there, but I bleed red and green. I’ve still got this year and next year at the club,” he said.

“If I’m still kicking and still got some miles on these legs, I’ll go from there and see where I end up.

“I love this club. I’ve always wanted to be a one-club player, and I’m in this position now. Things could go either way.”

Souths inserted a clause into Johnston’s current contract that allows him to join the Chiefs at any time and become their first signature.

CEO Blake Solly also confirmed on Monday the Rabbitohs would not make life hard and fight to keep Johnston if he wanted to leave.

“We understand how strong AJ’s connection is with Papua New Guinea,” Solly said.

“In many ways, it would be such a great moment for the game if he was their inaugural player signed.”

Solly, meanwhile backed calls for the NRL’s leading tryscorer award to be renamed the Johnston-Irvine medal, as an evolution from the Ken Irvine Medal, which Johnston has won four times.

“The medal is named after Ken because he had the record and his contribution to the game. Now that AJ’s got the record it’s absolutely right that AJ’s there,” Solly said.

“We should never forget all of the great things Ken did for the game and it’s fitting that it will be named the Johnston-Irvine medal.”

Telix Resubmits NDA to U.S. FDA for TLX101-Px (Pixclara®) Brain Cancer Imaging Candidate

0

MELBOURNE, Australia and INDIANAPOLIS, March 16, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Telix Pharmaceuticals Limited (ASX: TLX, NASDAQ: TLX, “Telix”) today announces the resubmission of a New Drug Application (NDA) to the United States (U.S.) Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for TLX101-Px, (Pixclara®[1], Floretyrosine F 18 or 18F-FET), an investigational PET[2] imaging agent for the characterization of recurrent or progressive glioma (brain cancer) from treatment related changes in both adult and pediatric patients.

Telix has resubmitted the NDA with the additional data requested by the FDA. The Company believes, based on the Type A meeting and ongoing consultation with the FDA, that the additional data and statistical analysis, along with the primary data set provided in the original submission, appropriately addresses the Complete Response Letter[3].

Given the potential to address significant unmet medical need, TLX101-Px has been granted Orphan Drug[4] and Fast Track[5] designations by the FDA. PET imaging with 18F-FET is already included in international clinical practice guidelines for the imaging of gliomas[6], however there is currently no FDA-approved targeted amino acid PET agent for adult and pediatric brain cancer imaging commercially available in the U.S.

Dr. David N. Cade, Telix Group Chief Medical Officer, said, “We appreciate the FDA’s recognition of the critical unmet need to improve the diagnosis and management of glioma, particularly in the post-treatment setting. Our resubmission is supported by an extensive and compelling data set – particularly so for an orphan indication. We are grateful to our global clinical collaborators, who share our commitment to ensuring patients in the U.S. can benefit from this important patient management tool.”

Maggie Haynes, Executive Director, Head for the Cure Foundation, added: “Our community is encouraged by the FDA’s ongoing engagement and guidance to the sponsor and support for the Expanded Access Program for TLX101-Px. We are hopeful of an expedited review, so this important and proven imaging option can become available to those who urgently need it.”

About TLX101-Px

TLX101-Px is a PET imaging agent, which has been granted fast track and orphan drug designations by the FDA as an imaging agent for the characterization of recurrent or progressive glioma from treatment related changes. TLX101-Px targets membrane transport proteins known as LAT1 and LAT2[7]. This enables TLX101-Px to be potentially utilized as a companion diagnostic agent to TLX101-Tx (iodofalan 131I), Telix’s LAT1-targeting glioblastoma (GBM) therapy candidate, currently under investigation in the pivotal IPAX-BrIGHT study[8]

About gliomas in the U.S.

Gliomas are very diffusely infiltrative tumors that affect the surrounding brain tissue. They are the most common form of central nervous system (CNS) neoplasm that originates from glial cells, accounting for approximately 30% of all brain and CNS tumors and 80% of all malignant brain tumors[9]. In the U.S., there are six cases of gliomas diagnosed per 100,000 people every year[10]. GBM is a high-grade glioma and the most common and aggressive form of primary brain cancer, with approximately 22,000 new cases diagnosed annually in the U.S.[11]. The mainstay of treatment for GBM comprises surgical resection, followed by combined radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Despite such treatment, recurrence occurs in almost all patients[12], with an expected survival duration of 12-15 months from diagnosis[13]

Certain popular spring break destinations are introducing stricter rules ahead of the busy travel season.

In Panama City Beach, Florida, officials have approved temporary overnight beach closures as part of the city’s spring break safety plan.

The closures will run from March 12 through April 30, with certain sections of the beach closed nightly between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m., according to the Panama City Beach official website.

The measure is intended to prevent large crowds from gathering late at night and to allow officers to patrol other areas during the peak tourism period, the website noted.

Police Chief J.R. Talamantez said the rules are meant to help maintain order while welcoming visitors to the popular Gulf Coast destination.

“Panama City Beach is a world-class destination, and our job is to ensure it remains safe for our residents and visitors alike,” Talamantez said on the city’s website.

The city is also enforcing several additional ordinances during spring break, including a ban on alcohol on the beach throughout March and restrictions on alcohol sales between 2 a.m. and 7 a.m.

Violating the rules could result in fines, arrest or jail time, the city warned.

Christopher Bess, public information officer with the Miami Beach Police Department, said the city is working to shift the atmosphere away from the chaotic party scene that once defined the season.

“We are divorced with spring break,” Bess said. “The last two years, there were no fatalities, no shootings, no chaos.”

Despite some restrictions being relaxed, Bess said officers will continue to monitor crowds closely and enforce city laws throughout the spring break period.

Aussie teen sensation Daniel Williams in elite company after epic 0.01 victory in the 800m at Adelaide Invitational

0

Australian teenage sensation Daniel Williams has lit up the Adelaide Invitational with victory in the 800m by just 0.01 seconds.

The 18-year-old continued his rise to stardom as he clocked 1:44.37 to take down former national champion Luke Boyes, who also set a personal best but fell short of a lunging win.

Williams, eyeing off the under-20 world championships in August, is closing in on Peyton Craig’s Australian under-20 record of 1:44.11 — but he has for now already put himself in elite company.

Only 12 men in history have run faster than Williams at his current age or younger.

“I can’t believe it, I actually can’t believe it,” Williams said.

“Coming into this I had a massive disappointment in Perth a month ago, I ran about 1:52.

“To come back and run 1:44 today is just unbelievable. It’s insane, I’m stoked.”

Hometown sprinter Aidan Murphy stole the show later with a statement triumph in the 200m featuring Reece Holder and American Diamond League champion Jacory Patterson.

The South Australian won easily and set a new meet record as he clocked 20.43 into a -1.3 headwind.

“My coach and I just went all in the last couple of months, the last year or so,” Murphy said.

“It’s been really good to find some consistency in training, I’m happy to see it all paying off finally.”

Murphy will move up to 400m at the Maurie Plant Meet in Melbourne in a fortnight, hoping to unlock “untapped potential” over the one-lap race.

Elsewhere in Adelaide, Abbey Caldwell bettered her own meet record in the 800m to win in 2:00.04.

The versatile 24-year-old said the first lap was a “wake-up call” to her body after recently focusing on the 3000m.

“I think that’s what I need, I need to shock the body to be able to develop and know where I need to put my improvements in to sharpen up for nationals,” Caldwell said.

Paralympian Angus Hincksman (T38) lowered his personal best to 3:48.52 to take down domestic rival Reece Langdon in 3:50.59.

“I’m stoked to get the PB and I love winning, it hasn’t happened that often against Reece, he is such a quality runner,” Hincksman said.

“I knew how good Reece was in that last lap and I was so thankful to pull it off.”

It was smooth sailing for Olympic discus bronze medallist Matthew Denny, who claimed another meet record on his Australian tour, taking the crown with a 67.99m to defeat British training partner Lawrence Okoye.

Returning to the top of the podium after the birth of her first child, Brooke Buschkuehl reigned supreme in the long jump when leaping 6.48m (0.0) to take down world under-20 champion Delta Amidzovski (6.46m, +0.5) effort.

“I feel really excited to get the win tonight, it’s a step in the right direction for me,” Buschkuehl said.

“I’m just enjoying being back competing after having little Bobby, so it’s going to be exciting to see what’s to come.”

Australia’s quarter-milers capitalised on the settling conditions over 400m as Jemma Pollard and Luke van Ratingen clinched wins in times of 52.22 and 45.21 respectively, while in the 400m hurdles Matthew Hunt ran himself into the top-10 Australians of all time with a 49.48 performance — jumping 10 positions in just one race.

Earlier in the night, Australia’s fastest men and women went to battle with Joshua Azzopardi and Chloe Mannix-Power asserting their presence in times of 10.27 (+0.3) and 11.45 (-0.3) respectively.

On Friday night the 4×100 men’s relay team of Lachlan Kennedy, Azzopardi, Christopher Ius and Jacob Despard set a meet record of 38.34 to take out the win.

Ebony Lane, Monique Hanlon, Olivia Rose Inkster and Chloe Mannix-Power came away with a meet record in the women’s with a time of 43.37.

Cleanest cruise lines revealed after CDC surprise sanitation inspections

The cleanest cruise ships have been revealed in a new study — and some of the findings may surprise cruise lovers.

The study, which compiled data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) annual health and hygiene inspections, ranked a number of popular cruise lines as the most sanitary.

“The data shows that independent brands tend to score higher than large conglomerates, and, surprisingly, the age of the ship doesn’t appear to influence a cruise line’s ability to achieve a perfect score,” according to the study by Florida-based Squaremouth Travel Insurance.

Cruise ships were graded on a 100-point scale. To pass inspection, ships must score 86 or above.

The Viking Ocean Cruises II Ltd., Viking Expedition Operations and Crystal Cruises were tied as the cleanest cruise lines, according to the study. Each cruise line scored a 99 out of 100.

“Surprisingly, the age of the ship doesn’t appear to influence a cruise line’s ability to achieve a perfect score,” a new study said.  (Jeffrey Greenberg/Universal Images Group)

“The federal government’s Vessel Sanitation Program (VSP), established in 1975 to work with the cruise industry to protect travelers’ health, is critical for the health and safety of passengers, staff and the locations that cruise ships visit,” Gavin Macgregor-Skinner, an infection prevention expert and epidemiologist, told Fox News Digital.

Oceania Cruises, P&O Cruises, Japan Grace, Virgin Voyages, Norwegian Cruise Lines, Celebrity Cruises and Royal Caribbean International completed the top 10 cleanest cruise line list.

Royal Caribbean’s Adventure of the Seas ship, which premiered in 2001, ranked high in the CDC’s list — proving that age is not necessarily linked to cleanliness.

All the ships in the top 10 scored higher than 97.12.

“Ships participating in the VSP can expect two unannounced inspections every year, with a focus on medical facilities, potable water systems, swimming pools and whirlpool baths, galleys and dining rooms, child activity centers, cabins, ventilation systems and common areas,” Macgregor-Skinner said.

Viking, Virgin and Norwegian were the corporations that ranked the highest, with sanitation scores of 98.75, 97.67 and 97.39, respectively, according to the study.

“Without strong cleaning and hygiene practices, germs can spread quickly.”

Disney was No. 4 in the list of corporations — averaging a 97.

Royal Caribbean and Carnival had average sanitation scores of 96.74 and 94.82, respectively.

DREAM VACATION BECOMES NIGHTMARE AS DOZENS FALL ILL IN SUSPECTED NOROVIRUS OUTBREAK ON CRUISE SHIP

Viruses can spread quickly on a cruise ship.

But the CDC implements strict cleaning protocols for all vessels.

“Cruise ships are shared environments where thousands of people touch the same surfaces every day,” Brian Sansoni, senior vice president of communications at the American Cleaning Institute in Washington, D.C., told Fox News Digital.

“Without strong cleaning and hygiene practices, germs can spread quickly, increasing the risk of illness among passengers and crew,” he continued.

Surprisingly, the study found no link between viruses and the lack of cleanliness.

Cruise ships are often ravaged by norovirus and other gastrointestinal illnesses. In 2025, the CDC reported 23 onboard outbreaks, according to the study.

However, “the data shows no correlation between the number of onboard viral outbreaks and sanitation scores, proving that viral illness can easily spread on the cleanest of ships,” the study said.

Macgregor-Skinner said cruise lines are the only part of the travel sector that routinely report illnesses to the federal government.

“It is very important not to confuse the wider availability of cruise health data with a higher incidence rate on cruise ships compared to settings like restaurants, hotels and planes,” Macgregor-Skinner said.

Overall, the cruise industry is actually cleaner than other travel sectors, he said.

Nevertheless, Sansoni asserted, “Inadequate cleaning can allow viruses and bacteria to linger on high‑touch surfaces like railings, elevator buttons and bathroom fixtures. When cleaning protocols break down, those germs can spread rapidly in close quarters.”
