TSA staff shortages lead to hourslong security lines for travelers at some airports

Travelers struggled with hours-long security lines at some airports as officials warned of Transportation Security Administration staffing shortages amid the partial government shutdown.

Houston’s William P. Hobby Airport told customers Sunday to arrive as early as 5 hours before their flights, and warned that security wait times could exceed three hours.

The partial government shutdown has meant that TSA officers are working but without regular paychecks.

TSA callouts rose during the 2018-2019 government shutdown, prompting the closure of some checkpoints and leading to longer screening lines. It ended hours after a shortfall of air traffic controllers curtailed flights on the East Coast. The current shutdown, however, is affecting only Department of Homeland Security employees, including TSA officers.

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, the world’s busiest, as well as Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport, said travelers should arrive at least 3 hours early because of the disruptions.

“Due to impacts from the federal government’s partial shutdown, there is a shortage of TSA workers at the security checkpoint,” New Orleans’ airport said on a post on X. “The Airport has staff on hand to help keep the lines organized, and we will continue to coordinate with our federal partners with the TSA as they navigate this issue.

Sunday’s disruptions rattled the airline industry and travelers just as the busy spring-break travel period gets underway.

“Airlines have done their part to prepare; now Congress and the administration must act with urgency to reach a deal that reopens DHS and ends this shutdown,” Chris Sununu, chief executive of Airlines for America, an industry group that represents American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Southwest Airlines, United Airlines, and others, said in a statement. “America’s transportation security workforce is too important to be used as political leverage.”

The disruptions come as airlines are grappling with the fallout of the U.S. and Israel’s attacks on Iran, which have led to thousands of canceled flights and driven up the cost of fuel, their biggest expense after labor.

Actor and former ‘SNL’ star slams major airline for his seat downgrade: ‘I paid for first class’

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Comedian and actor Jim Breuer has come down hard on a major airline after he said the company downgraded him from a first-class seat to row 18.

During a recent episode of his podcast “Jim Breuer’s Breuniverse,” the star revealed that he and his wife purchased round-trip tickets from Phoenix to Honolulu and selected first-class seats — but wound up downgraded during the return leg.

Breuer said they’d purchased the tickets about a month and a half in advance.

“These are thousands of dollars,” he said. “I splurged to treat me and my wife.”

Breuer told Fox News Digital the situation went beyond a simple seat reassignment. “I can handle not getting my way. What I cannot handle is being lied to,” he said. “I paid for first class on American Airlines. I was told it was overbooked. Then I found out it was not.”

He continued, “That is where it stopped feeling like a mistake and started feeling like something was taken from me.”

On the podcast, he said the airline had confirmed the couple’s first-class seat assignments, seats 1D and 1F — and he even received a message from the airline asking them to pre-order their in-flight meals.

“We could have steak, and we could have chicken,” he said.

As boarding began in Honolulu, Breuer said they were called to the gate counter.

“We looked at each other, and we’re like, ‘What, do we get an upgrade to fly the plane?’” the comedian joked.

Instead, Breuer said a supervisor informed them their seats had been changed.

The flight was overbooked, he recalled the supervisor telling him. “We just downgraded you to row 18,” the worker allegedly said, according to Breuer.

“No, you didn’t. You have a crew here,” Breuer said he responded to the airline employee.

“Did you put one of your crew members in my seat?” Breuer continued.

The supervisor, according to Breuer, told the couple he was not able to disclose who had taken the seats.

Breuer said he was not offered an alternative first-class seat and that he declined to take an option to fly the following day in economy plus.

He said he and his wife ultimately took the flight in their reassigned seats and that he did not sleep during the red-eye trip.

Breuer recounted that he later contacted the airline’s customer service department and was told the flight had not been overbooked.

He said he received a $400 refund and was offered a $500 voucher — which he said did not cover the cost of the first-class seats he had purchased.

“We’re up to $900 for two people getting booted out of first class,” he said.

Breuer said he continued pressing the issue after initial responses did not resolve his complaint.

“I reached out, I filed complaints — and it was not until I contacted the Department of Transportation that I finally heard from someone. That should not be how a paying customer gets attention,” he told Fox News Digital.

Breuer said the experience changed his view of the airline.

“I truly hope leadership looks at this because I used to trust this airline,” he added.

In a later episode of his podcast, he touched on the experience again and said he was “thankful for the call” from the airline — but said the whole experience “still rubbed” him “the wrong way.”

He also said, “I’m not demanding anything. … I’m not that person.”

He said he just wanted a genuine apology and hoped that others were not also experiencing the same issue. He also wanted the “plate of chicken francaise” from first class that the airline took from him and his wife, he said.

Breuer is well known for his time on “Saturday Night Live” and for his role in the film “Half Baked.” He continues to tour nationally as a stand-up comedian and to host his popular podcast.

Set against the backdrop of the “Forty Peers’ Shrine Festival”, a century-old intangible cultural heritage inherited in Jixi County, Anhui Province, the film tells a heartwarming story of Li Yan, a live-in son-in-law. Tasked with a crucial mission at the key moment of the shrine festival ritual, he grows from initial timidity and hesitation to bravely taking on the important role of the ritual organizer, ultimately achieving self-growth and responsibility. The creative team filmed on location in Huizhou’s villages, faithfully restoring traditional rituals such as board dragon making, New Year pig sacrifice and community gift distribution. It perfectly blends the mortal fireworks of Huizhou villages with the solemnity of the century-old folk customs, presenting the unique lingering charm of Huizhou’s rural areas at a glance.

Without deliberate dramatic conflicts, the film narrates gently with delicate images, embodying the traditional eastern humanistic spirits of benevolence, righteousness, courage, propriety, wisdom and faith in every rural detail. The authentic performances of the villagers make the warmth of clan inheritance and the sincerity of neighborhood companionship even more touching. They also bring the century-old folk customs out of books, turning them into a vivid living heritage passed down from generation to generation, and fully demonstrating the profound heritage of Huizhou culture.

As an outstanding cultural film rooted in eastern rural China, it reflects the bigger picture through small details, recording the protection and inheritance of traditional folk customs in Chinese villages. More than a window to explore Huizhou culture, it breaks the boundaries of regions and cultures with a heartwarming human story, letting the world see the perseverance of eastern rural China and feel the endless vitality and unique charm of China’s intangible cultural heritage.

Mercedes completes one-two as George Russell wins Australian Grand Prix ahead of Kimi Antonelli

0

George Russell has won the Australian Grand Prix as Mercedes completed a one-two in a dominant performance.

Russell, who began on pole, lost the lead to Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc on the opening turn, but Mercedes’ strategy to pit under an early virtual safety car paid dividends.

It was the sixth race win of Russell’s career and first at Melbourne’s Albert Park circuit.

“Very nice, I like this car, I like this engine,” Russell could be heard saying on the team radio.

Teammate Kimi Antonelli finished second, beating home Ferrari pair Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton.

Leclerc had jumped into an early lead and enjoyed an enthralling duel with Russell with the lead changing several times in the opening 10 laps.

But when Isack Hadjar’s Red Bull failed on lap 11, it created a virtual safety car that saw nearly the entire field enter the pits.

The two Ferraris stayed out there and quickly built up a handy lead.

Hamilton could be heard saying on team radio that either he or his teammate should have pitted during the early safety car.

But their advantage was slowly dwindled down before Leclerc pitted to leave Hamilton out in front on his own.

However, Russell made great ground to eventually pass Hamilton just before the Ferrari driver went into the pits.

Ferrari’s only hopes appeared to rest on whether McLaren would pit again, but they made the call to do a one-stop strategy.

And the Ferrari pair never really challenged as Russell cruised to the finish line, three seconds ahead of Antonelli.

Leclerc rounded out the podium a further 12 seconds behind, just ahead of Hamilton.

The top four were well clear of Lando Norris and Max Verstappen, who rounded out the top six.

Verstappen worked his way through the field to finish a remarkable sixth after after beginning the race at the back of the grid following his crash in qualifying.

Hometown favourite Oscar Piastri crashed out before the race had even begun in a nightmare situation for the locals.

Audiobooks surge as travel favorite, helping fuel debate over what ‘counts’ as reading

0

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

From long drives to delayed flights and crowded commutes, more Americans are now reaching for headphones over hardcovers, and it has sparked debate over whether their audiobooks really count as reading.

Since 2016, the percentage of Americans who listen to audiobooks daily has risen from 3% to 8% — a 167% increase — according to Edison Research. And 51% of adults say they have listened to an audiobook at least once, according to the Audio Publishers Association’s 2025 consumer survey.

But traditionalists insist that reading requires eyes on a page. More than 40% of Americans believe listening to an audiobook is less rigorous and doesn’t truly count as reading, a 2025 NPR-Ipsos poll found.

Others, however, argue the suggestion that audiobooks “don’t count” feels dismissive.

“Surely ‘reading’ is about enjoying the art of storytelling, and audiobooks allow that,” said Ali Smith, a Maryland-based dog trainer and avid audiobook listener.

While she wishes she had time to sit and read an actual book, audiobooks better suit her busy life.

“Telling me that’s not reading as I listen to stories about dragons, fairies, knights and gnolls is just not true,” Smith told Fox News Digital.

RISKY ‘AIRPORT THEORY’ HAS TRAVELERS CUTTING ARRIVAL TIME FOR FLIGHTS ‘WAY TOO CLOSE,’ SAYS EXPERT

Some experts agree, while others argue that the distinction is not so simple.

Experts say both print reading and audiobook listening activate key language comprehension areas of the brain. (iStock)

“The brain area we call the ‘letter box,’ which processes print, is not as engaged when you listen,” cognitive neuroscientist Nadine Gaab of Harvard Graduate School of Education in Massachusetts recently told The Harvard Gazette.

“But it has been shown that when some people listen to words, they visualize them, so the letter box gets activated.”

Both listening and reading can activate the brain’s main language comprehension systems, agreed Emily Levy, a literacy expert and founder of EBL Coaching, which serves New York and New Jersey.

“When someone listens to an audiobook or reads print, the comprehension parts of the brain show similar activation,” Levy told Fox News Digital.

Yet she cautions that calling the two experiences identical would be an oversimplification.

Reading print also engages visual networks, including areas involved in decoding letters and recognizing word patterns, skills that are especially important for children learning to read. Audiobooks, on the other hand, rely on auditory processing systems.

LISTENING TO MUSIC AFTER 70 MAY CUT DEMENTIA RISK BY NEARLY 40%, NEW STUDY SUGGESTS

“If a child needs to build their decoding or reading fluency skills, listening to audiobooks won’t do the trick,” Levy said.

That nuance is often lost in online debates, where opinions can be strong and deeply personal.

Zack Barnes, an associate professor of literacy at Austin Peay State University in Tennessee, considers audiobooks a legitimate form of reading.

“When we are listening to an audiobook, you are still trying to extract meaning from the text that is being read aloud to you,” Barnes said. “You are still doing a complex cognitive task by listening to audiobooks.”

Audiobooks are becoming an increasingly popular way to pass the time on the go. (iStock)

Barnes added that audiobooks can serve as a gateway, motivating some listeners to pick up a physical book and build actual reading stamina.

Others argue that the context matters. Listening while driving or multitasking can divide attention, potentially affecting retention of fine details.

Traveling can be especially distracting, said Bob Hutchins, CEO of Human Voice Media and a Ph.D. researcher focused on how technology shapes psychology. But he argues that debates over audiobooks tend to miss the bigger picture.

Listening while driving or flying may divide attention, some experts caution. (iStock)

“Instead, we should be examining how each type of media impacts cognition during the process of absorbing information,” Hutchins, based in Nashville, told Fox News Digital.

He notes that reading print allows a person to control pace, reread passages and even remember where information appeared on a page.

“Audios connect us to our past traditions of hearing a voice tell a story,” Hutchins said. “Printed materials anchor our minds in analytical thinking.”

Research suggests audiobooks may also work well for storytelling and basic information, while print can offer advantages when grappling with more complex material, Psychology Today reported.

Research suggests audiobooks may be better suited for storytelling than complex information. (iStock)

Experts agree that the debate should therefore shift away from whether audiobooks “count” as reading and toward what listeners want to gain from the experience.

For those on the move like Smith, who says audiobooks help her keep her “sanity” as she paces her house at 2 a.m. trying to get her baby to sleep, pressing play remains the practical choice and one she is not embarrassed about.

“I’m proud of my audiobook listens,” she said.

Visitors become entrepreneurs, discover opportunities in Yunnan

More and more travelers to Southwest China’s Yunnan province are choosing to stay there longer and longer, and run their own businesses, attracted by the province’s distinctive industries and comfortable living environment, said Wang Ning, secretary of the Communist Party of China Yunnan Provincial Committee and a deputy to the 14th National People’s Congress, China’s top legislature.

The province welcomed 53 million tourist visits during this year’s Spring Festival holiday. Over the past year, about 5.5 million tourists, known as “sojourners” locally, have chosen to stay in Yunnan for more than two weeks at a time, official statistics showed.

“What delights us even more is that a growing number of people are settling in Yunnan to pursue entrepreneurship. Attracted by Yunnan’s unique charm, they aspire for a better life,” Wang said, adding that Yunnan’s charm lies in its “purity, beauty, novelty and uniqueness”.

“Pure nature nourishes simple hearts, which nurture pure dreams. The sea of clouds on Ailao Mountain, the tea forests in Jingmai Mountain and the blue waves of Fuxian Lake, as well as the conversations by the fire pit, the smiling faces at the market and the mutual help in the villages, all help people reconnect with their original dreams and the very purpose they started with,” he said.

Besides, Yunnan’s picturesque landscapes, magnificent scenery and rich culture provide an endless source of inspiration for entrepreneurs, he said. Time-honored crafts, such as the Yi embroidery of Chuxiong, the purple pottery of Jianshui and the silverware of Heqing, have been revitalized by many young entrepreneurs at their workshops.

Wang added that every year Yunnan witnesses new changes that bring new opportunities. In just three to four years, the output of the province’s coffee industry has grown from less than 10 billion yuan ($1.45 billion) to nearly 100 billion yuan. Many sojourners in Yunnan have gone on to open coffee shops, run coffee plantations and sell coffee via livestreaming.

Yunnan’s climate, which is neither severely cold in winter nor unbearably hot in summer, is a huge draw, “offering great potential for the health and wellness tourism and outdoor sports”, he added.

The province also occupies a unique geographical location as a frontier opening up to South Asia and Southeast Asia. The China-Laos Railway has been reporting large passenger and cargo volumes.

“Everyone with a dream and the courage to explore can find their own place in Yunnan,” Wang said.

In recent years, the province has become a magnet for entrepreneurs and expatriates seeking a blend of culture and business opportunities.

After 10 years of the fast pace in Shanghai, Zhang Yu and his wife moved to Dali in Yunnan in 2019, as he believed that as a place welcoming all, Dali was diverse, inclusive and gave newcomers a strong sense of belonging, along with beautiful mountains, waters, ancient towns and ethnic customs.

In April that year, the couple rented a courtyard near Dali Ancient City and converted it into an apartment with rooms available for renting. Their business later expanded to eight courtyards and about 100 rooms, each equipped with a kitchen, stove and refrigerator.

“In the beginning, we just wanted to cover our daily expenses. Later, we found that Yunnan has a very good business environment,” Zhang said.

Chen Yuxin used to sojourn in Dali every year while working in Beijing. In 2023, she moved the headquarters of her company, Wonder Wander Coffee, to Dali to better connect with the source of the products.

Chen said that she has hired many good locals, and is invited to tea parties hosted by the local government routinely to share resources and solve problems. Her company has been growing fivefold every year.

“I met a British couple who had sojourned in Dali for a year. With their help, I’m promoting Yunnan coffee beans in London,” she added.

French traveler and cook Vincent Aguesse has lived in Kunming, the provincial capital, since 2015, married a local woman and opened a French restaurant.

For him, Yunnan’s wild mushrooms are the most unique gift of the land and climate. Every August and September, he combines fresh wild mushrooms with French cooking techniques to create fusion dishes, including chicken braised with wild chanterelles in white wine.

“Food has helped me get to know, adapt to and integrate into life in Yunnan. But my exploration of this land has only just begun,” he said.

Sarcastic Max Verstappen crashes out of Australian GP qualifying: ‘Fantastic’

0

Four-time Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen has crashed out of qualifying for the Australian Grand Prix.

The 28-year-old flew into the barriers at turn one to begin his first flying lap, his rear tyres locking under braking.

“The car just f***ing locked on the rear axles. Fantastic,” he said sarcastically.

Know the news with the 7NEWS app: Download today Arrow

In a concerning sign Verstappen was shaking both hands and appeared to be grimacing — after holding onto the steering wheel at the point of impact.

“I think he’s given himself a bit of a rattle,” Martin Brundle said.

Red Bull quickly sought to apportion blame for the champion’s exit.

“They can’t believe it just as much as we can’t believe it,” Ted Kravitz said in pit lane.

“(Team principal) Laurent Mekies is going through the data just trying to understand why it was that the rear brakes just locked up like that, sending Max Verstappen into that irrecoverable spin.”

Formula 1’s new-for-2026 regulations have split the power unit 50-50 between an internal combustion engine and battery.

The engine is used for recharging now more than ever before.

“As he’s hit the brakes, the engine and the kinetic motor — it’s like pulling the handbrake,” Martin Brundle said.

“That’s not driver error. How often do you see Max Verstappen just making fundamental errors? He’s hit the brakes and it’s just locked the rear-axle.”

Mercedes’ George Russell topped the first session from McLaren’s Australian star Oscar Piastri, Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton and reigning champion Lando Norris.

Verstappen’s new teammate Isack Hadjar finished fifth fastest ahead of Mercedes young gun Kimi Antonelli, whose team remarkably repaired his car in time for qualifying following a heavy crash in practice earlier in the day.

Meanwhile, Brundle tipped just 10-12 finishers in Sunday’s grand prix.

“We’ve just seen too many gremlins, haven’t we?” he said.

Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll are not expected to take the chequered flag as their serious engine and battery issues continue.

Stroll and Williams’ Carlos Sainz did not take part in qualifying.

Verstappen was knocked out in Q1 alongside debutants Cadillac, with Sergio Perez six tenths clear of teammate Valtteri Bottas.

“Well done everyone, first quali done of many. The only way is up — let’s go,” Bottas said.

Alonso looked set for a surprise appearance in Q2 until Alpine’s Franco Colapinto produced a last-gasp effort.

Dr. Xuan Linli, Chief of Medical Oncology at Jiahui International Cancer Center, stands on the patient’s right. The patient’s daughter, nursing team, medical team, and caregivers are gathered together at Jiahui International Hospital.

The 70‑something patient had exhausted all standard lines of treatment at MD Anderson Cancer Center in the United States. His doctors recommended ivonescimab, the first approved PD‑1/VEGF bispecific antibody for solid tumors. After a video consultation in late November scheduled within a week of their initial inquiry, the family chose Jiahui International Cancer Center in Shanghai for its multidisciplinary expertise and U.S.‑trained Medical Oncology Chief Dr. XUAN Linli.

During treatment, the patient developed immune‑related complications requiring ICU care. The cancer center rapidly coordinated oncology, neurology, critical care, and expert input from ivonescimab principal investigator Dr. Zhou Caicun. His condition has since stabilized, with ongoing care focused on disease control.

As a tertiary international hospital partnered with Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center, Jiahui provides seamless international patient pathways, from remote consultations to travel coordination and continuous family updates.

The patient’s daughter said, “We are deeply grateful for the dedication, compassion, and tireless efforts of the entire Jiahui team: the doctors, nurses, kitchen and cleaning staff, the international team and front desk, and the care aides. My father would especially like to express his heartfelt thanks to Ms. Cui, who has cared for him every day since his admission. Beyond her attentive bedside care, she has offered him encouragement, comfort, and hope.”

China’s breakthrough oncology innovations are creating new options for patients worldwide. JICC continues to draw growing inquiries and referrals from North America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East, establishing Shanghai as a global hub for advanced cancer care.

JAKARTA, Indonesia, March 7, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — UGREEN, a leading global consumer electronics brand, officially announces Indonesian actor and musician Iqbaal Ramadhan as its Brand Ambassador for Indonesia. The partnership connects UGREEN’s vision of empowering people through technology with Iqbaal’s creative energy that flows between music, film, and art.

UGREEN X Iqbaal Ramadhan: Activate Your Beat!
UGREEN X Iqbaal Ramadhan: Activate Your Beat!

For UGREEN, “Activate Your Beat” is more than a message — it is the expression of a brand philosophy: to create technology that keeps life in motion. The company’s expansion across product categories and innovations has always aimed to inspire users to unleash their creativity and live with confidence.

“I always carry something that shows personality,” said Iqbaal with a grin. “For example, my T6 Magic Wireless Earbuds — they can actually express themselves on their little screen. It’s fun, creative, and personal, which is exactly how I see UGREEN as a brand. If I had to describe UGREEN in three words, they would be active, thoughtful, and creative. That’s what ‘Activate Your Beat’ means to me — finding your rhythm and letting technology keep it alive.”

Through this collaboration, UGREEN highlights how technology can serve as a creative companion rather than just a tool. The MagFlow Series Power Bank and Wireless Charger keep Iqbaal powered throughout his hectic schedule, while the T6 Magic Wireless Earbuds immerse him in music whether he’s creating or relaxing between takes. The NAS DXP4800 Plus Smart Storage System safely houses his recordings and video files, ensuring that inspiration is always within reach. Together, they represent a seamless ecosystem designed to keep users’ creativity flowing — no matter where life takes them.

UGREEN continues to expand in Indonesia, focusing on smarter and more human-centered technology — empowering users to stay powered, inspired, and in rhythm. Because in every beat, there is potential waiting to be activated.
