Major airline reportedly considers deluxe cleaning for premium seats only as passengers vent online

Cleanliness may soon come at a price for Southwest travelers, and passengers are blasting the proposed policy.

The Dallas-based airline is considering bringing in cabin cleaners between flights to clean only the premium extra legroom seat areas of the aircraft, according to reports. 

Coach cabins will reportedly not receive the same treatment.

“Southwest Airlines flight attendants tidy every aircraft between every flight today,” a Southwest spokesperson told Fox News Digital Friday when asked about the reports.  

“That will continue, and, in addition, we are looking at potentially bringing in additional cleaners when needed, at certain airports to supplement — not replace — our standard cleaning efforts.

“We will continue to make sure our aircraft are ready for every customer, regardless of where their seats are on the plane,” the spokesperson added.

An airline flight attendants union board member posted a since-deleted video for crew members, saying he was concerned about the experiment the airline was trying in which premium cabins would be cleaned between every flight but not the whole aircraft.

The individual claimed he got a memo from Southwest Tuesday about the new cleaning experiment.

He reportedly compared the proposed cleaning change to the upper class on the Titanic “having cigars and sipping brandy,” while passengers below didn’t get their seats cleaned.

“So up front, you’ve got these super clean airplanes. In the back, you’ve got half-hearted, tidied airplanes. The passengers are going to come on board. They’re going to see it,” he said, according to the blog “View from the Wing.”

“When passengers see what’s going on, they’re going to be very upset.”

Southwest passengers took to Facebook and X to voice their frustrations about the potential policy.

“I don’t ever trust anyone to clean my seat the way I want anyway.”

“Southwest Airlines [is] only gonna clean your seat if it smells like money,” wrote an angry X user. “The rest of you peasants can sit in the germ-infested filth left behind by the rest of the poor people.”

Facebook users felt differently.

“Bring your own wipes if you really want a clean seat,” said one person. “People need to stop leaving a mess for the flight attendants to clean up.”

Another Facebook user agreed, saying, “I don’t ever trust anyone to clean my seat the way I want anyway. I always carry wipes to wipe everything down right as I sit down so I can try to keep germs at bay.”

Said yet another Facebook user, “They pick up loose trash and lay the seat belts in the seats. I’ve sat down plenty of times with snack crumbs all around my feet.”

Etiquette expert Jacqueline Whitmore of Florida said every airline passenger should be courteous.

“Everyone should clean up after themselves, regardless of whether the cleaning crew comes in or not,” she told Fox News Digital. “As a passenger, you should pack your manners, and you should clean up your surrounding area.”

Whitmore, who worked as a flight attendant for years, said it is generally the flight attendants’ job to collect garbage throughout the flight, not the responsibility of a cleaning crew.

“I used to see this all the time,” she said. “Passengers would change their baby’s diaper on the seat. Then they might leave a dirty diaper on the seat.”

Ultimately, the potential new cleaning policy from Southwest could affect flight attendants more than passengers.

“After everybody deplanes the flight, attendants will go through the cabin with one final sweep,” Whitmore said.

“Personally, I’d be more upset if I were a flight attendant, not a passenger.”

This is the second time in a week Southwest has taken heat from passengers.

The airline was slammed after it made a major process change over a month ago. The airline transitioned Jan. 27 from an open seating policy, so passengers now must select their seats or be assigned specific spots.

Passengers say they have issues reading the seat numbers, run into snags with the boarding flow and are unable to spread out on the plane.

“We’re always looking for ways to improve our customer experience to continue delivering the seamless and reliable travel journey that customers expect from Southwest,” a company spokesperson previously told Fox News Digital.

United CEO Scott Kirby says higher airfare could be ahead after fuel price spike

BOSTON — United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby said the spike in fuel prices since the U.S. and Israel attacked Iran on Saturday will have a “meaningful” impact on the carrier’s financial results this quarter, but he added that demand has been resilient.

Jet fuel, airlines’ biggest expense after labor, has surged 58% since last Friday, going for $3.95 a gallon on Thursday, according to the Argus U.S. Jet Fuel Index.

“If it continues we’ll feel it in Q2 also,” Kirby said after an event Thursday afternoon where he discussed the future of air travel at Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.

United, like most major U.S. carriers, doesn’t hedge fuel, a practice where airlines or other companies lock in prices using futures contracts or other products. A Boeing 737-800 can hold 6,875 gallons of fuel, according to a manufacturer guide.

“No one hedges anymore and even if you do, hedging the crack spread is really hard to do,” Kirby said. The crack spread is the difference between the price of crude oil and products like gasoline.

When asked when the higher fuel costs will start affecting airfares, Kirby said it will “probably start quick.” 

He added that travel demand has been resilient over all, with booked revenue up 20% from a year ago. Demand “has not taken even a tiny step back,” he said.

Kirby spoke less than two weeks before airlines are set to attend a closely watched JPMorgan industry conference where airline executives often update their financial outlooks.

His comments are an early sign of how global airlines are impacted by the war, which left more than a million people stranded after over 25,000 flights were canceled, forcing customers to find alternatives to flight chaos in the Middle East.

A new segment is emerging for United because so many customers have been caught up in airspace closures and massive flight cancellations in the Middle East since Saturday’s attacks and other strikes throughout the week.

Dubai International Airport in the United Arab Emirates is the busiest international airport in the world, according to the Airports Council International, while Hamad International Airport that serves Doha, Qatar, is another major hub.

The airports are gateways to millions of passengers flying to and from destinations that span Australia, India, Europe and North America. But customers have been forced to avoid the Middle East amid airspace closures.

“Each day this week, we have booked over 1,000 people from Australia and New Zealand to Europe. Last year, we booked less than one a day,” Kirby said, adding that Europe is the strongest region in the world for bookings now.

United is also in talks with the Trump administration for potential charter flights to get citizens out of the Middle East, Kirby said, but that plans haven’t been set yet.

Passengers rip airline for new seating policy: ‘It is as bad as everyone is saying’

Dallas-based Southwest Airlines has come under fire from passengers after it made a major process change just over a month ago.

Southwest transitioned Jan. 27 from its open seating policy, and passengers now must select their seats or be assigned specific spots.

Passengers have shared their frustrations with the new policy on social media. They say they have issues reading the seat numbers, run into snags with the boarding flow and are unable to spread out on the plane.

“We’re always looking for ways to improve our customer experience, to continue delivering the seamless and reliable travel journey that customers expect from Southwest,” a company spokesperson told Fox News Digital Thursday in response to a request for comment.

“The employees of Southwest deliver the best hospitality in the airline industry alongside our best-in-class reliability,” the spokesperson added. “We look forward to continuing to provide our customers with friendly, reliable and low-cost travel.”

In the “r/SouthwestAirlines” forum on Reddit, one user wrote, “Yes, it is as bad as everyone is saying.”

The person added, “[I] paid for an emergency row seat. There are two people next to me. All the other rows around me (same class or lower) only have one person on them. We still can’t scoot over even though we paid for seats.”

A different user wrote, “I’m currently on a flight, and it’s about 25% full (maybe less). They said people can’t change seats for weight balance reasons. I’m in a full row. The row in front of me is empty.”

“It’s not that bad,” said another person. “You just need to pay more.”

In the same forum, someone posted, “Here’s what nobody is saying about the new assigned seating. There is an alarming [number] of customers that have no clue how the seats are numbered or how to read them.”

The passenger said he or she saw about 15 people sitting in the wrong seat, plus other flyers asking for help in finding their row.

“At first I was thinking that the majority of folks are just idiots, then it occurred to me that these are likely frequent SWA customers who have never dealt with seat numbers,” the same user said.

 “It’s mind-boggling that this is difficult for anyone.”

A different Redditor wrote, “I’ve mainly flown SW, but still know how to find my seat on an airplane. It’s not hard. Lol. Even when there wasn’t assigned seating, the seats still had numbers. It’s mind-boggling that this is difficult for anyone.”

Still another person said, “It’s probably true and that’s funny to even consider, because the seats have always been numbered even before.”

One man posted on X, “I always used to fly Southwest. Was trying to find a flight, and saw that everything I liked is gone. Higher prices and fees for everything. Plus, I might get separated with this new seating. Unfortunate.”

Rolex China Sea Race 2026 – Day 2 Report

HONG KONG, March 6, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Daybreak on the second day found the Rolex China Sea Race fleet already battle-tested. After slipping quietly out of Victoria Harbour, the boats sailed straight into a potent easterly flow and building seas, transforming the race from a gentle start into a full‑throttle push across open water. Conditions built steadily overnight, with 25–28 kts blowing throughout the evening.

It was a tough night for some entries. The double‑handed team on Juice retired due to equipment malfunction, while PHS entry Jibulai later withdrew after suffering a broken mainsail. 

Moonblue 2 on the other hand reported “a big night, charging through the oil rigs and ripping off roughly 170nm”, with the crew in high spirits.

For the first ever single‑handed entry, Tiger Mok aboard 2 Easy successfully completed his first night at sea: “Survived the first evening — great to see the sunset and never felt this happy and special to see the sunrise. We’ve got 20 to 25kts right now, boat is going okay. I had a little autopilot malfunction last night — a sail tie caught the autohelm, blew a fuse, but it’s working again. I hope the autopilot will be nice to me. I’ve been very gentle with it, not pushing too hard.”

By morning, winds eased to around 18kts, with 1.5 to 2m waves, offering the fleet a brief window to reset, regroup, and enjoy a well‑earned breakfast.

But the respite didn’t last long — by afternoon, winds built again, with a tired crew aboard Parnassus reporting 25 to 27kts.

Team Alive–Rampage have taken the southernmost rhumb line, aiming to avoid a patch of adverse current that could threaten their bid to break the race record. By 2000 HKT they had logged 420nm and were charging toward Subic at 15kts, holding a 25nm lead over Standard Insurance Centennial V.

The two TP52s — Standard Insurance Centennial VII and Happy Go — remain locked in close quarters, sticking nearer the rhumb line and continuing an intense match‑racing duel with only a few miles between them.

Meanwhile, in the battle for IRC Overall, Seawolf is putting on a commanding performance and remains well‑positioned to challenge for their first overall victory.
