Popular airline’s retro food menu sparks ‘golden age’ flying comparisons as passengers react

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

American Airlines is marking its upcoming 100th anniversary with a nostalgic nod to its past.

Capitalizing on today’s popular retro food trend, the airline is introducing luxury menu offerings inspired by the Roaring Twenties. Beginning Feb. 9, travelers are able to preorder special dishes, with menus appearing on select flights starting in March, the airline said in a news release.

Adding decadent dishes like beef Wellington and prawn cocktail isn’t just a step back in time. The move also apparently addresses a growing frustration among travelers that in-flight dining has been less than satisfactory in recent years.

FROM RETRO TO REFINED: JELL-O SALAD AND SAVORY GELATIN DISHES MAKE UNEXPECTED RETURN

“Pan Am and similar airlines offered spacious seating arrangements, proper cutlery and fine dining,” a Reddit user posted on the “r/aviation” forum not long ago. “Not to mention [that] being an airline crew [member] was prestigious.”

“These amenities and circumstances are extremely cost-intensive … Today it is so far from the luxury it once was, [given that] cost-cutting and corporate culture reign supreme,” the Reddit user added.

American Airlines travelers may soon feel differently.

Appetizers will include a prawn cocktail and a Waldorf salad, with caviar, blinis and a deviled egg topped with crème fraîche added in April.

In domestic First Class, a Boursin cream cheese dip will also be offered on select long-haul routes, the airline said.

The entrée selections continue the throwback theme, led by beef Wellington served with roasted vegetables and asparagus topped with béarnaise sauce.

A pecan tart will be among the dessert offerings.

Chicken Florentine roulade paired with mashed potatoes and mushroom sauce will be another entrée option. A pecan tart will be included in the dessert offerings, the airline said in its release.

The menus will debut on select international and transcontinental flights in American’s Flagship First and Flagship Business cabins, with domestic First Class service added in April.

The offerings are for a limited time only, the airline noted.

“Our centennial year is a chance to reflect on how far we’ve come,” said Rhonda Crawford, American’s SVP of Customer Experience Design and Strategy, in the release.

“These menus celebrate the flavors that defined the early days of American Airlines in a way that feels special and memorable for today’s travelers.”

Said one social media user on Reddit, “Different days indeed.”

“Old guy here,” the person continued a few years ago in a post.

“Went on my first flight at 6 years old in 1970 from Chicago to Florida. Each ticket cost $500 (equivalent of maybe $2,500 now). We went out and bought special ‘airplane clothes,’ the equivalent of church attire. I remember eating steak on the plane.”

Commenters reacting to American Airlines’ news took a variety of stances.

Writing on Instagram, one person said, “Caviar? I’ll believe it when I see it.”

Someone else wrote, “How about they bring back good service?”

Fox News Digital reached out to American Airlines for further comment about the new menu offerings.

During 2026, “customers will continue to see additional centennial touches — from limited‑edition amenity kits and pajamas to other celebratory moments — with more initiatives to be announced throughout the year,” the airline said in its release.

Sports Nutrition Academy (SNAc) partners with NHA athlete Saif Nordin to power high-performance sport through nutrition

0

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, Feb. 10, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Sports Nutrition Academy (SNAc) Malaysia is proud to announce a new partnership with fencer Saif Nordin, one of Malaysia’s emerging young athletes and a News Hub Asia (NHA) athlete. The collaboration reflects SNAc’s commitment to supporting high-performance athletes with evidence-based sports nutrition that enhances performance, recovery, and long-term health.

As Malaysian athletes face increasingly demanding competition schedules, nutrition has emerged as a critical and often underestimated performance factor. Regional sports science data shows that inadequate fuelling is one of the leading contributors to fatigue, injury risk, and inconsistent performance among competitive athletes, particularly those juggling travel, training, and academic or work commitments. This highlights the growing need for structured, personalised nutrition strategies rather than ad-hoc eating habits.

SNAc aims to address this gap by translating nutrition science into practical, real-world solutions for athletes. Through education, assessment, and ongoing guidance, SNAc supports athletes in fuelling appropriately for training loads, competition demands, and recovery, helping them perform consistently across long seasons and international calendars.

Saif Nordin represents the next generation of Malaysian athletes navigating the complexities of elite sport. Fencing is a discipline that demands explosive power, speed, tactical precision, and sharp mental focus, all of which are heavily influenced by nutrition timing, energy availability, and recovery strategies.

“We are excited to support Saif as part of the SNAc athlete community,” said Tania Lee Xu Yar, dietitian and co-founder of SNAc Malaysia. “High-performance nutrition is not about restriction or rigid meal plans. It’s about understanding what the body needs at different phases of training and competition, and fuelling in a way that supports performance, recovery, and health. Saif’s sport requires both physical sharpness and mental clarity, and nutrition plays a key role in both.”

Tania who has worked with athletes who have competed in the Olympics added, “What many people don’t realise is that the same principles we apply with elite athletes are equally relevant for young competitors, developing athletes, and active individuals. When nutrition is planned properly, athletes train better, recover faster, and reduce the risk of injuries or burnout over a long season.”

For Saif, the partnership marks an important step in his athletic development as he competes across multiple international tournaments each year.

“I’m excited by this collaboration. I love food, as many of my teammates know,” said Saif. “I now need to use that love of food in a more strategic way. With all the international tournaments on the fencing calendar, getting the food equation right in different countries is not easy. Having proper guidance helps me make better decisions so I can focus on fencing and perform at my best.”

The tie-up was officially marked with a logo presentation and photo session featuring Saif and representatives from SNAc Malaysia, celebrating a shared commitment to performance, education, and athlete well-being.

This collaboration reinforces SNAc Malaysia’s role as a resource hub for athletes, coaches, sports scientists, and sports enthusiasts seeking to enhance performance through nutrition. Co-founded by experienced sports nutritionists and dietitians who have worked with elite national athletes at the National Sports Institute (ISN), SNAc specialises in applying evidence-based nutrition strategies to support training, competition, and recovery while optimising long-term health.

Through partnerships such as this, SNAc Malaysia aims to elevate the standard of sports nutrition awareness in Malaysia, empowering athletes from the grassroots level to fuel smarter, perform better, and build a successful generation of elite athletes.

About Saif Nordin

Saif Nordin is part of Malaysia’s new wave of young sporting talent, a fencer with sharp instincts, clean technique, and discipline. Having represented Malaysia and Selangor across multiple competitive competitions, including the Cadet and Junior World Championships, he is steadily carving out his place in the national fencing landscape.

More than just an athlete, Saif is thoughtful about the science behind performance. He believes nutrition, recovery, and smart training are just as important as time spent on the piste. It’s this balanced, modern approach to sport that makes him a standout voice among Malaysia’s next generation of competitors.

In October 2024, Saif joined forces with regional news portal, News Hub Asia (NHA), through a media partnership. The Saif x NHA partnership is part of a larger effort by NHA to support young Asian athletes with a focus on bridging gaps between talent and opportunities in sports.

IRBM Reports Breakthrough in Zika Virus Drug Discovery

0

ROME, Feb. 10, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — IRBM, a leader in early drug discovery research, has announced a major scientific breakthrough with the discovery of a novel and potent allosteric inhibitor targeting the Zika virus (ZIKV) protease (NS2B-NS3). The findings, published in Nature Communications (doi: 10.1038/s41467-026-68943-x), demonstrate the molecule’s efficacy in preclinical models and represent a promising new approach to combat ZIKV infections.

Visualization of how IRBM-Z-2 binds to a newly discovered pocket on the Zika virus protease, revealing key interactions that may help block the virus’s activity.
Visualization of how IRBM-Z-2 binds to a newly discovered pocket on the Zika virus protease, revealing key interactions that may help block the virus’s activity.

Mosquito-borne ZIKV poses a serious public health threat due to its association with severe neurological complications. With no approved antivirals or vaccines currently available, there is an urgent need for new treatment options.

IRBM scientists identified a small molecule that binds to a previously uncharacterized allosteric site on the NS2B-NS3 protease, a key enzyme required for viral replication. The inhibitor effectively suppressed protease activity in biochemical and cellular assays and demonstrated significant antiviral activity in animal models. It also exhibited a favorable safety and pharmacokinetic profile, supporting its potential for clinical development. Notably, this mechanism may extend to other flaviviruses including dengue, yellow fever, and West Nile, suggesting broader therapeutic potential.

IRBM’s integrated approach, combining high-content phenotypic screening, computational modeling, mechanistic enzymology, iterative medicinal chemistry, and ADME profiling allowed the team to rapidly advance from initial hit identification to preclinical candidate selection.

“This discovery marks an important milestone in antiviral drug development,” said Carlo Toniatti, MD, PhD, Chief Scientific Officer at IRBM. “By leveraging cutting-edge medicinal chemistry and integrated screening technologies, our team has delivered a novel ZIKV protease inhibitor with compelling preclinical activity.”

The achievement, funded by the Region of Lazio, is the result of a collaborative initiative originating from CNCCS, and it opens a promising path toward targeted antiviral therapies that could fill a critical gap in global public health preparedness. It also reinforces the joint commitment of CNCCS and IRBM to tackle rare and neglected diseases with innovative science.

“Innovation in drug discovery never happens alone. At IRBM, we aim to act as a bridge between academic discoveries and the clinic, and the success of this project demonstrates the impact that effective public–private partnerships can have on advancing new therapies,” added Matteo Liguori, CEO and Founder of IRBM.

About IRBM IRBM is a leading research organization specializing in early drug discovery. With decades of expertise and a proven track record of delivering innovative preclinical candidates, IRBM is known for its rigorous, multidisciplinary approach to designing and executing complex experiments for the toughest drug discovery challenges. IRBM advances programs across a wide spectrum of modalities and therapeutic areas, including antivirals, oncology, neuroscience, rare diseases, and beyond.

About CNCCS CNCCS is a public-private consortium between IRBM, CNR, ISS, and the University of La Sapienza, which acts as a lead factory for drug discovery programs, integrating a chemical compound repository with a high-throughput screening (HTS) platform.  Its mission is to act as a bridge between academic research and pharmaceutical development, with a particular focus on targeting rare, neglected, and poverty-related diseases.

Winter Olympics 2026: Snoop Dogg tries skiing for the first time and is given a gold medal

0

Rapper Snoop Dogg is taking his role as honorary coach for Team USA at the 2026 Winter Olympics very seriously — even tacking new sports on the snow.

The legendary artist has brought his signature swagger to the games in Italy, cheering on athletes while dressed in custom red, white and blue gear.

But Snoop, whose real name is Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr, isn’t just there to spectate.

Know the news with the 7NEWS app: Download today Arrow

Ove the weekend, the musician took to the ice for a skiing lesson with former Olympian Picabo Street.

In a video shared on Instagram, the 1998 gold medallist can be seen guiding the rapper through the basics, starting with the simple — but tricky — task of walking in ski boots.

“I ain’t never walked in ski shoes before,” Snoop said.

“They grab hold of my shin and ankle.

“So hopefully Picabo can show me how to move.”

As Snoop shuffles along the ice, Street reiterates just how difficult they are to walk in.

“We’re not going to be crip walking or anything,” Street joked, as Snoop attempts the hip-hop dance in the snow.

The former Olympic skier then helps Snoop glide along the snow, but the rapper moves nervously, exclaiming: “My legs are going to separate!”

Moments later, he falls onto his back, prompting laughter from them both.

Snoop quickly gets back up, determined to finish the lesson — which thankfully ends without injury.

Impressed by his efforts, Street presents Snoop with a personalised gold medal she designed especially for the rapper.

It isn’t the first sport Snoop has tried at the Winter Games.

The musician and cultural icon, who carried the Olympic flame through the streets of Gallarate earlier in the week, has also been spotted at a curling mixed doubles match.

Ahead of the event, another video shared on Instagram showed Snoop learning how to curl, fully leaning into the Olympic experience.

Dressed head-to-toe in Team USA gear, he stepped onto the ice with a broom in hand as athletes and crew guided him through the basics.

In another clip, Snoop tried sledding through the snow, capturing the experience himself on a GoPro.

Cuba says international airlines can no longer refuel there as Trump turns up the pressure

The Cuban government said international airlines can no longer refuel in the island nation due to fuel shortages after President Donald Trump threatened tariffs on any country that supplies the communist country with oil.

Cuba’s leadership said Sunday that the country will run out of aviation fuel from Monday, likely disrupting airlines operating there, according to EFE news agency, which cited two sources. The kerosene shortage is expected to persist for the next month, with all of Cuba’s international airports affected.

Cuba’s Foreign Ministry and the Cuban Embassy in London did not immediately respond to a CNBC request for comment.

The Trump administration has sought to tighten the U.S. chokehold on Cuba since Jan. 3, when it conducted an audacious military operation to depose Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, a longtime ally of Cuba’s government.

Trump, in an executive order issued at the end of January, said the Cuban government constituted “an unusual and extraordinary threat,” which required a national emergency declaration.

The U.S. president said Cuba’s ties to countries including China, Russia and Iran, human rights violations and communist leadership destabilize the region “through migration and violence.”

As part of the announcement, Trump said U.S. tariffs may target countries that provide any oil to Cuba, whether directly or indirectly.

Russia: Fuel situation in Cuba is ‘critical’

Gripped by a deepening energy crisis, Cuba on Friday outlined extensive measures designed to protect essential services and ration fuel supplies for key sectors.

The plan reportedly includes restrictions on fuel sales, the closure of some tourist establishments, shortening school days and a reduction of the working week at state-owned companies to four days, from Monday to Thursday.

Russia, which holds friendly ties with Cuba, said Monday that Havana’s fuel situation was “truly critical” and that U.S. attempts to further pressure the country were causing numerous problems.

“The situation in Cuba is truly critical. We know this. We are in intensive contact with our Cuban friends through diplomatic and other channels. Indeed, let’s say the U.S.’s stranglehold is causing many difficulties for the country,” Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Monday, according to Russian state news outlet RIA Novosti.

Cuba’s foreign minister, Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, previously said the country’s leadership condemned Washington’s tariff threats in the “strongest possible terms.”

In a statement posted on Jan. 30, Parrilla also accused the U.S. government of resorting to “blackmail and coercion in an attempt to make other countries to join its universally condemned blockade policy against Cuba.”

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said last week that her government would aim to send humanitarian aid to Cuba from Monday, adding that the country is working to find a diplomatic solution to resume oil shipments to the Caribbean island.

Mexico had paused shipments of crude and refined products to Cuba amid pressure from the Trump administration.

Older travelers who skip key step before popular vacation activity could be risking their health

0

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Many travelers and cruise lovers may consider scuba diving during a vacation trip a cherished bucket-list item — but a pair of recent deaths have driven home concerns about diving risks for older Americans, even as experts say the activity remains relatively safe.

A 64-year-old woman in West Hills, California, passed away on Jan. 26 after going scuba diving off the coast of Catalina Island in the Golden State, authorities said.

She exhibited signs of distress while diving, the Los Angeles Times reported — and died later at a hospital.

NEARLY 70 SKIERS STRANDED IN MIDAIR FOR HOURS AFTER GONDOLA MALFUNCTIONS AT POPULAR RESORT

On that same day, a 66-year-old man from Waukee, Iowa, died in a diving accident off the coast of Manasota Key Beach, Florida.

He and a diving partner had gone hunting for shark teeth, according to reports — but he never resurfaced. His body was found several hours later.

Both deaths are still being investigated.

There are some 2.5 million scuba divers in the U.S. each year, according to the Diving Equipment & Marketing Association, a trade group headquartered in San Diego — and serious incidents are rare.

Experts say deaths are uncommon, particularly when divers are properly screened, trained and prepared.

Still, physicians point out that age-related changes can make diving adventures riskier.

The body doesn’t always respond the same way while underwater, and pre-existing medical conditions can become exacerbated during a dive. Aging affects multiple systems needed during scuba diving, say experts — and cardiovascular health is one of the most significant.

Cardiac events account for roughly 20% to 30% of diving-related deaths. The likelihood increases in older adults, according to the Divers Alert Network, an international nonprofit headquartered in Durham, North Carolina. It’s focused on diver safety and emergency assistance.

“The key medical considerations are — in my opinion, first and foremost — cardiovascular health. Pre-dive cardiac screening is essential,” Dr. Lara Lambiase, a dive medicine specialist, told InDEPTH magazine in Sept. 2025.

SHOVELING SNOW COULD POSE DANGEROUS HEALTH RISK FOR ONE GROUP, EXPERTS WARN

“Aging can also reduce lung elasticity, which may become a critical factor.”

Older travelers are encouraged to schedule a medical evaluation before they go diving. The evaluation should include a cardiovascular assessment and a discussion about pre-existing medical conditions.

“Aging can reduce lung elasticity, which may become a critical factor.”

Many older adults are managing chronic conditions such as heart disease, high blood pressure or pulmonary issues, or take medications that can affect exertion, hydration or breathing.

“Remember that you should get in shape to scuba dive,” Dr. Douglas Ebersole, a cardiology consultant for the Divers Alert Network, told the same publication last year. “You should not scuba dive to get in shape.”

Preparation is key — and choosing reputable dive operators is essential, experts say.

Refresher training can be helpful, even for experienced divers. Reviewing skills such as air management, buoyancy control and emergency procedures can reduce stress and fatigue during dives.

“A major problem is the seasonal diver who returns after six months away and is not ready at all,” Neal W. Pollock, dive physiology researcher, said last year, according to the same source.

“We do not always admit we are slipping — but, over time, we all do.”

Experts recommend staying within conservative depth and time limits, avoiding overexertion and adding rest days.

Staying hydrated and avoiding alcohol before dives can help reduce fatigue and stress, particularly in hot, tropical environments, they also note.

Travelers should ensure dive operators carry oxygen and have emergency protocols.

They recommend that people stay close to a dive partner and avoid solo dives.
