Inside India newsletter: Iran war disruptions, Modi’s appeal to boost India’s hospitality sector

0

Hello, this is Priyanka Salve, writing to you from Singapore.

Welcome to the latest edition of Inside India — your one-stop destination for stories and developments from the world’s fastest-growing large economy.

The conflict in the Middle East has affected India’s economy, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging citizens to curb overseas travel, save fuel — and even pause buying gold. This bleak-sounding appeal is proving to be a boon for India’s domestic travel and tourism industry.

Read on!

Any thoughts on today’s newsletter? Share them with the team.

The big story

The conflict in the Middle East is causing India acute economic pain, with its currency weakening, the import bill rising, and mounting concerns over a slowdown in growth.

But there is a silver lining: the domestic tourism industry is showing signs of a boom.

Earlier this month, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged citizens to reduce overseas travel in an attempt to conserve India’s foreign exchange reserves, under strain from a rising import bill amid a surge in global energy prices.

The Indian rupee is among the worst-performing currencies in Asia, falling over 6% year to date against the greenback, LSEG data showed. This weakening of currency, combined with inflated jet fuel prices, has also led to one of the country’s major airlines, Air India, to cancel more than a quarter of its international flights between June and August.

All this coincides with the peak season for Indian tourists travelling abroad, experts told CNBC, adding that as schools remain shut for more than a month, it is easier for families to take longer holidays to escape the Indian summer heat.

Indian Hotels Company, the country’s largest hospitality group and parent of luxury chain Taj Hotels, told CNBC’s “Inside India” that Modi’s exhortation will “benefit the domestic tourism industry.”

Domestic travel boom

Indian travelers have already started choosing local destinations, industry leaders and sector experts told CNBC.

“Domestic travel has gained prominence, with 42% of travelers opting to explore their own countries. This trend, [is] notably observed in India, China, and the United States,” according to a report by global travel insurance major Allianz Partners earlier this month.

That trend might reflect a “preference for cost-effective travel options while enjoying familiar landscapes and supporting local tourism industries,” the report, based on a survey conducted by Ipsos, said.

Several hospitality operators in India confirmed the trend and are reporting sharp improvement in occupancies and room prices from May onwards.

Rajeev Menon, president of APAC ex-China at Marriott International, told CNBC’s “Squawk Box Asia” that revenue per available room in May was “back to double-digit numbers,” and the “pace remains pretty strong,” going in the months ahead.

The hospitality chain’s revenue per available room had dropped in March, dashing expectations of double-digit growth, due to the conflict in the Middle East.

Given the challenges due to the Middle East conflict, “I think what is playing out is people have pivoted and shifted their plans to stay within Asia and [are] trying to avoid going too far away,” Menon said.

In 2025, more than 14 million Indians took leisure trips abroad, according to government data. A significant share of that will shift to local tourism as the disruptions from the war in Iran persist, experts said.

Over the past few weeks, travelers who might have otherwise opted for overseas summer holidays have been choosing to explore destinations within India, said Devendra Parulekar, founder of SaffronStays.

SaffronStays, a popular Indian premium holiday property rental platform, told CNBC that its bookings for May were up by nearly 40%, while forward bookings for June are almost 50% higher than a year earlier.

The firm is seeing increased demand for its luxury properties near the Himalayan foothills as travelers find it difficult to escape to Europe to beat the heat of the scorching Indian summer.

Indian Hotels Company is particularly eyeing opportunities arising from a shift in destination weddings from foreign locations to India.

A study by industry body, the Confederation of All India Traders estimates that weddings generated business worth 6.5 trillion rupees (nearly $68 billion) during the peak season from November to December 2025.

Wedding celebrations could become “a much bigger business,” with the shift to domestic locations, said Puneet Chhatwal, CEO at Indian Hotels Company.

That would amplify the demand for hotels, which is already outpacing supply, he said, adding that the Indian hotel chain expects room rates to “increase anywhere between eight to 12% at least.”

The World Travel and Tourism Council has been very bullish on the growing outbound travel from India and predicts that the opportunity could be as big as China over the next decade. But until the Iran war-led disruptions continue, the wanderlust of Indian travelers is unlikely to cross borders.

New South Wales come back from 20 points down to beat Queensland after Kalyn Ponga send-off

0

Queensland star Kalyn Ponga has become the seventh player in State of Origin history to be sent off in a flashpoint moment that flipped the game on its head and paved the way for New South Wales to record a famous comeback victory.

The Maroons were in control with a 6-20 lead lead in the 57th minute of Wednesday night’s series opener when a brawl broke out after Ponga flattened Tolu Koula with a shoulder charge.

Koula was stopped in his tracks less than 20 metres from the tryline after making a line-break down the left side and lay flat on his back following the hit as Blues players descended on Ponga to remonstrate.

When the players were broken up, referee Ashley Klein gave Ponga his marching orders.

That’s despite replays showing the contact was mostly head on head. Ponga’s shoulder only really made contact with Koula’s shoulder.

Andrew Johns and Cameron Smith agreed Ponga deserved to be sin-binned, but were aghast at the decision to send him off altogether.

“Really? Really? No way that’s a send-off!” Smith said.

“The Ponga decision — everyone knows I bleed blue, but that was outrageous,” NSW legend Johns said on Nine.

The decision gave the Blues the one-man advantage they needed to kick-start a pulsating comeback.

After Ponga’s send-off, the Blues scored three tries, including the match-winner from James Tedesco with just over a minute left on the clock, to complete the greatest comeback in State of Origin history.

Tedesco, in his comeback game after being dropped for last year’s series, made what Phil Gould called a “miraculous catch” — which he almost fumbled — and willed himself over the line to level the scores at 20-20.

With the clock ticking down close to zero, you could cut the tension in the stadium with a knife as Nathan Cleary had a conversion from point-blank range to win the game.

The superstar halfback made no mistake, but not before a prolonged routine which included two approaches to the ball, only adding to the drama.

The Blues, who 0-20 to start the game, blew the previous best comeback of 12 points away in a rain-soaked thriller.

Koula was taken off for a head injury assessment, which he failed, meaning he was ruled out for the remainder of the game.

In Ponga’s absence, Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow was moved to fullback, while Kurt Capewell switched to centre.

The most recent Origin send-off was Joseph Suaalii in the series-opener of 2024.

Four of history’s seven send-offs have happened since 2023.

Treasure hunters find biggest Viking coin hoard in country’s history: ‘Without parallel’

0

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Two hobbyists recently uncovered one of the largest Viking coin hoards ever found — fittingly, in a Nordic country.

The hoard was found in a field near Rena, about 18 miles north of Elverum in southeastern Norway, according to an announcement from the University of Oslo’s Museum of Cultural History (KHM).

The treasure hunters, Rune Sætre and Vegard Sørlie, suspected they had uncovered a hoard when they found 19 silver coins on April 10.

ARCHAEOLOGIST BELIEVES HE FOUND LEGENDARY VIKING RULER’S LOST GRAVE IN REMOTE SPOT: ‘THIS IS RARE’

They contacted local officials at Innlandet County Authority — and the site soon became the center of a major archaeological investigation.

The cache consists of 2,970 silver coins believed to have been buried around 1047. It marks the largest Viking Age coin hoard discovered in Norway since 1950 — and the biggest in the country’s history.

The coins were minted between the 980s and the 1040s and bear the names of rulers including Æthelred II, Otto III, Harald Hardrada and the legendary King Cnut.

Most of the coins were minted in England or Germany, which officials said reflects the strong foreign influence on Norway’s economy during the late Viking Age.

STRANGE VIKING GRAVE WITH ‘CHRISTIAN OVERTONES’ DISCOVERED BY PERPLEXED ARCHAEOLOGISTS: ‘VERY UNUSUAL’

“Foreign coinage dominates the circulation of money in Norway up until Harald Hardrada (1046–1066) established a national coinage,” KHM professor Svein Gullbekk said in a statement.

“The hoard was deposited right at the beginning of this development.”

KHM described the discovery as “a coin hoard without parallel in a Norwegian context.”

Hanna Geiran, director general of the Directorate for Cultural Heritage, said she could “hardly believe my ears when I heard about the find.”

ARCHAEOLOGISTS UNEARTH VIKING-ERA ‘EXECUTION PIT’ NEAR UNIVERSITY TOWN, EXPOSING BRUTAL ANCIENT VIOLENCE

She added, “This is both a national and an international event, and few things capture people’s imagination as much as the Viking Age in Norway.”

It remains unclear why the hoard was buried, though researchers believe it may have been tied to the region’s booming iron trade during the Viking Age.

“This is an exemplary case of how it should be done.”

Archaeologist Jostein Bergstøl of the Museum of Cultural History believes the massive coin cache may represent wealth accumulated through that trade.

“From the 900s until the late 1200s, there was enormous iron production in this area,” he said. “Ore was extracted from the bogs, and the processed iron was exported to Europe.”

Officials also praised the two detectorists for following proper procedures and helping secure the site.

“This is an exemplary case of how it should be done,” said Innlandet County Authority archaeologist May-Tove Smiseth.

“Sætre and Sørlie immediately got in touch and have done everything by the book, in full accordance with the Directorate for Cultural Heritage’s guidelines,” she added.

“They have been highly cooperative and have actively contributed to securing and documenting the find in the best possible way.”

Researchers are analyzing and registering the coins, and KHM said the hoard “will be the subject of research for many years to come.”

American Airlines picks SpaceX’s Starlink for in-flight Wi-Fi on more than 500 planes

0

American Airlines plans to outfit more than 500 of its narrow-body aircraft with Starlink, handing another win to Elon Musk‘s SpaceX unit that has made inroads with major carriers for in-flight Wi-Fi.

American was evaluating Starlink and Amazon Leo as recently as March for the service.

The airline announced Tuesday it would install Starlink on about 500 of its narrow-body Airbus planes, like the A321neo, starting early next year. American spokesman said the carrier doesn’t have immediate plans to change providers on its Boeing fleet, which uses a mix of Viasat and Panasonic.

American in January rolled out free in-flight Wi-Fi for members of its frequent flyer program, following United Airlines, Delta Air Lines and others.

Delta in March said it would use Amazon Leo for in-flight Wi-Fi for hundreds of jets starting in 2028. United, Southwest Airlines and Alaska Airlines, which merged with Hawaiian Airlines in 2024, have selected Starlink.

Carriers are battling for higher-spending customers, including by upgrading once-slow, expensive and clunky in-flight internet to higher speeds. They have also been weighing other revenue streams, like personalized ads for travelers.

SpaceX, meanwhile, is preparing to go public in what’s likely to be a record IPO next month. Its connectivity unit, which includes Starlink, posted revenue of $11.39 billion last year, making up 61% of total sales, SpaceX said in a filing for its initial public offering earlier this month.

  • Collaborative research on AI-based diagnosis of multiple sclerosis, Building a clinical trial dataset
  • Leveraging large-scale, multi-center brain MRI datasets to detect key lesion biomarkers

SEOUL, South Korea, May 26, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Neurophet (Co-CEOs Jake Junkil Been and Donghyeon Kim), an artificial intelligence (AI) solution company for brain disorders diagnosis and treatment, announced today that it will conduct a joint research collaboration with the Vall d’Hebron Institut de Recerca (VHIR), the research institute of Vall d’Hebron University Hospital in Spain. The collaboration will focus on Neurophet AQUA MS, its quantitative imaging software for multiple sclerosis.

Neurophet Launches Joint Study with VHIR on Neurophet AQUA MS
Neurophet Launches Joint Study with VHIR on Neurophet AQUA MS

The joint study aims to develop and validate AI algorithms that detect multiple sclerosis lesions based on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). To this end, both parties will secure high-quality, large-scale datasets related to multiple sclerosis and will accelerate the development of new technologies to be integrated into Neurophet AQUA MS.

Neurophet AQUA MS is a software module integrated into Neurophet AQUA, Neurophet’s brain imaging analysis solution, and is designed to analyze brain images of patients with multiple sclerosis, a chronic and debilitating disease of the central nervous system. The product received FDA 510(k) Clearance in October 2024.

Multiple sclerosis is a chronic disease affecting the central nervous system, which comprises the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves. It primarily occurs in young adults aged 20 to 40 and shows a higher prevalence in women. It is also more common among Caucasian populations in North America and Europe, while relatively less prevalent in Asian and Black populations. Considering these regional characteristics, Neurophet AQUA MS is expected to establish itself as a strategic product in the U.S. and European markets, where the prevalence of multiple sclerosis is high.

Under the collaboration, VHIR will provide de-identified brain MRI datasets from clinically diagnosed multiple sclerosis patients, along with expert-annotated ground truth lesion labels. Based on these datasets, Neurophet will develop and validate AI algorithms. In particular, the collaboration will focus on developing detection algorithms for the Central Vein Sign (CVS) and Paramagnetic Rim Lesions (PRL)—key imaging biomarkers emphasized in the latest diagnostic criteria—leveraging a large-scale dataset of over 1,000 patients.

Located in Barcelona, Spain, Vall d’Hebron University Hospital is the largest medical institution in Spain, integrating adult, pediatric, women’s, and rehabilitation hospitals. It also played a leading role in establishing the 2024 Revised McDonald Criteria, the international standard for the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis.

One of America’s most beautiful national parks now facing Disneyland-level crowds

0

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Months after federal officials instituted a new policy to bring more crowds to Yosemite National Park, tourists are apparently coming back with a vengeance.

Yosemite is receiving a surge of visitors, with 225,817 recreational guests in March as opposed to just 155,758 visitors in March of last year, according to SFGate.

That marks the busiest month since 2016, the California-based outlet said, and comes after the National Park Service (NPS) recently rolled back advance reservations at Yosemite.

STUNNING VACATION HOT SPOT TURNS INTO OVERCROWDED NIGHTMARE AS TOURISTS FLOOD STREETS

An NPS spokesperson, however, told Fox News Digital that the recent overcrowding claims “are not an accurate characterization of current park operations.”

The official added, “Yosemite, like many iconic national parks, experiences periods of high visitation, particularly around weather-dependent events and holiday weekends.”

In February, the NPS announced Yosemite would no longer require advance reservations, even during peak summer months.

“The park will rely on real-time traffic management measures, including temporary traffic diversions when parking areas reach capacity and deployment of additional seasonal staff to manage high-use areas,” the NPS said.

CASINO RESORTS IN NEVADA LOCATION, ONCE PACKED, BECOME GHOST TOWN AS CLOSURE NEARS

The changes were rolled out to “support strong visitation in 2026,” per the NPS — but according to California media outlets, that worked a little too well.

Visitors have been struggling with overcrowding ahead of the busy summer season, with parking lots filling early, shuttle buses packed to capacity and drivers circling Yosemite Valley in search of spaces, The Los Angeles Times reported.

“The waits are insane,” San Jose resident Kunal Khandwala said about the shuttle service, after struggling to find parking, the LA Times said.

John Buckley, executive director of the Central Sierra Environmental Resource Center (CSERC), described the overcrowded conditions in an interview with SFGate.

“Especially on Saturdays and sometimes also on Fridays and Sundays, the amount of crowding in the park exceeds the capacity of the parking lots, results in vehicles parked inappropriately wherever they can squeeze in along roads, and results in a crammed-together visitor experience,” said Buckley.

Buckley said a Yosemite visitor recently told a CSERC staff member that the crowds were “wall to wall” and that visiting the park “felt like a day at Disneyland.”

In a Facebook group for Yosemite visitors, users complained about the crowds in a variety of posts.

“We were there this past Saturday through Monday … Saturday it was awful, there was absolutely no parking anywhere,” one person said recently.

“[Every day] has been busier,” another wrote.

Not all visitors described severe crowding.

Conditions seemingly vary across different areas of the 1,169-square-mile park and at different times of the year.

“Very uncrowded as compared to summer months. … Weather may have contributed to this a bit, though,” one Facebook user said a couple of months ago.

Another person wrote on Facebook in the middle of March, “Just got back, crowds are very minimal, especially early in the day! I can’t image going there [during] peak season.”

“America’s national parks are open and accessible.”

Other social media users described beautiful weather and no issues with crowds.
