Luckless Giant Stephen Coniglio shattered after suffering a ‘brutal’ concussion during clash against Richmond

Greater Western Sydney veteran Stephen Coniglio has suffered a concussion after a “brutal” blow during Sunday’s clash against Richmond.

Late in the second term, Coniglio attempted to smother a kick from Sam Banks but was collected flush on the side of the head by the Tiger’s lower leg.

Coniglio immediately looked shaken before making his way to the bench.

“Yeah that looks brutal doesn’t it,” Joel Selwood said on Channel 7.

“He looked a little bit depleted down here on the bench.

“He headed to the rooms slightly before the other players.”

The 32-year-old sat on the bench for a few minutes before heading down to the race to the rooms just ahead of half-time.

He then underwent an HIA assessment during the long break. But he failed it and was ruled out for the remainder of the match.

Coniglio will also miss next week’s blockbuster derby against Sydney.

It continues a nightmare run on the injury front for the former captain.

He managed just 10 matches last year and 15 the year before, but had been in good form to start 2026 after a near faultless pre-season.

“He’s been one of the shining lights over the first month so hopefully it’s just a little bump for him,” Selwood added.

Coniglio has suffered multiple concussions in his career, including a horrific incident in 2024 that resulted in five facial fractures and a lengthy recovery.

Last year he was sidelined indefinitely after struggling with a mystery nerve issue.

Meanwhile, gun forward Aaron Cadman also suffered a huge head knock midway through the last quarter that saw him sit out the remainder of the match.

Cadman, who was playing his first game of the season, had impressed with a brilliant four-goal haul.

The two injuries took the gloss off a dominant performance from the Giants.

They exploded out of the blocks with an eight-goal first term to leave the Tigers shellshocked.

To Richmond’s credit, they fought back and closed to within 20 points in the third quarter, but the Giants put the foot down again to run away with the 56-point win.

Returning star Brent Daniels kicked three goals, while Jesse Hogan booted two.

Finn Callaghan (37 disposals), Lachie Ash (35) and Lachie Whitfield (31) all racked up plenty of possessions, while Clayton Oliver helped himself to 31 and eight clearances in a strong outing.
