Airlines including Qantas and Virgin Australia brace for record summer travel amid delay warnings

0

Australia’s airlines are hiring extra staff and putting on more planes as they gear up for a record-setting summer of travel, but holidaymakers have been warned to expect delays because of outdated technology and unpredictable weather.

Virgin Australia expects to operate 19,000 flights across the school holidays, a 3 per cent increase in capacity on last year thanks to new aircraft and new routes.

“We do things a little differently through the peak. We’ve added 185 additional airport staff,” Virgin Australia’s Chief Operating Officer Chris Snook said.

The additional staff range from baggage handlers to control room operators, as airlines prepare for what’s expected to be their busiest period on record.

“It’s like a giant game of Tetris,” Snook said.

“Each one of those blocks is a flight and as we move through the day, we track each one of those arrivals and departures, the number of passengers on board.”

To manage the increased demand, Snook says three or four Virgin aircraft will be kept spare across summer to cover any operational issues.

Meanwhile, Qantas is bringing back its 10th and final A380 from five-and-a-half years of COVID storage to boost capacity.

However, forecasters are already looking out for trouble, with weather impacting operations daily through October and November.

“Weather’s been impacting operations pretty much daily through October and November,” Virgin Australia’s meteorologist Michelle Berry said.

Airports are warning that without more investment in passport-free seamless travel, immigration delays like those seen at Melbourne Airport this week will get worse.

Simon Westaway from the Australian Airports Association highlighted the need for Australia to follow international examples: “Let’s do what’s happening in Denpasar, what’s happening in Singapore, what’s happening in the Middle East, what’s happening around the world.”

Construction at Brisbane and Melbourne airports could lead to further delays outside the terminals, adding to travellers’ woes.

During the summer peak from December 15 onwards, Virgin Australia will complete more than 450 flight operations daily right around the country as the aviation industry pushes ahead into what’s shaping up to be a record-breaking travel season.

Stash a simple item in your carry-on to avoid travel delays and stress, experts advise

0

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

For problems ranging from dealing with long immigration lines to dead phones, a simple, lightweight item might be the most overlooked airport essential, according to travel experts.

It’s not a charger, neck pillow or noise-canceling headphones, just a simple pen with blue or black ink.

Travelers who assume pens will be available at the airport risk unnecessary delays and frustration because many destinations still require paper immigration and customs forms, and writing utensils can be in short supply, Travel + Leisure recently reported.

WANT TO AVOID GETTING SICK ON A PLANE THIS HOLIDAY SEASON? MEDICAL EXPERT REVEALS BEST SEAT

One travel expert learned that lesson the hard way while arriving in Tanzania after a red-eye flight.

“I landed in Dar es Salaam after a red-eye, [with the] immigration hall packed and buzzing, all of us funneling off the plane, and by the time I reached the counter, every pen was gone — dry, vanished, even the chained-up one,” Georgia Fowkes, a Pennsylvania travel adviser for tour operator Altezza Travel, told Travel + Leisure.

“There I was, holding up the line, with the rest of the no-pen folks, waiting for my turn to borrow one,” Fowkes added. “Not my finest travel moment.”

SHOULD YOU LOCK YOUR LUGGAGE WHEN TRAVELING? WHY IT’S A WEIGHTY MATTER

She noted that late-night arrivals can be especially challenging since there are fewer travelers around to borrow a pen from.

“Pull a spare pen out of your pocket at 35,000 feet, and people look at you like you’ve just invented fire,” Fowkes said. “In that moment, a pen is social currency.”

Even as some countries move toward digital systems, travelers may still be required to complete paper forms, sometimes before the plane even lands.

WHAT FOODS DOES TSA ALLOW TRAVELERS TO BRING IN CARRY-ON LUGGAGE FOR FLIGHTS?

“Depending on your country of citizenship or origin, you might still be required to fill out a paper form when arriving,” Eric Rosen, a Los Angeles-based director of content at The Points Guy, told Reader’s Digest in October.

Rosen said he travels with several pens so he can fill out paperwork on board or while waiting in line, saving time and stress.

Experts say pen choice matters too. Basic, nonmetal ballpoint or gel pens with blue or black ink are best because fountain pens and rollerballs can leak due to cabin pressure, and travelers who fill out forms in unconventional ink colors may be asked to redo them.

Beyond immigration, a pen can also come in handy when technology fails.

Erin Carey, founder of travel public relations agency Roam Generation in Australia, told Travel + Leisure she always carries a pen in case her phone dies.

“What if your phone goes flat, and you need to jot down an address or a phone number, or you meet someone you’d like to reach out to again, and you need to get their email address?” Carey said. “Maybe you need to have something written in a local language to show a taxi driver, or you lose your luggage and want to fill out a form for that.”

A pen can also come in handy when technology fails.

The low-tech travel tip even has celebrity support.

Kelly Ripa recently revealed that she never travels without multiple pens, admitting she often takes them from hotel rooms.

“I travel with an armada of pens,” Ripa said on a November episode of “Live with Kelly and Mark,” according to People. “There’s 800 people making a mad dash to the three chained pens” at the customs desk, she said.

Ripa added that pens also double as in-flight entertainment when in-flight Wi-Fi fails, allowing her to write, work or doodle without relying on screens.

Gene Solutions Concludes Successful ESMO Asia Congress 2025 with AI-Powered Multi-Omics Liquid Biopsy Symposium and Two Best Poster Awards

0

SINGAPORE, Dec. 20, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Gene Solutions, a pioneering genetic testing company, announced key achievements at the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) Asia Congress 2025—held in Singapore on December 5–7. Highlights included a full-house symposium, seven scientific abstracts with two earning Best Poster designations, and meaningful engagement with thousands of oncologists from across the Asia-Pacific region at the company’s exhibition booth.

2025 has marked a year of substantial progress for Gene Solutions, with expanded presence and partnerships across India, Turkey, Taiwan region, Hong Kong SAR, and Mainland China. The company advanced precision oncology through Asia’s first multicancer early detection (MCED) test in a large prospective study of 9,024 participants (published in BMC Medicine). In parallel, a real-world circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) molecular residual disease (MRD) study involving 623 patients (published in JCO Oncology Advances, ASCO Publications) demonstrated high accuracy for early relapse detection versus imaging, supporting more timely interventions.

Symposium Highlights: AI-Powered Liquid Biopsy & Multi-Omics Across the Cancer Care Continuum

Chaired by Prof. Herbert Ho Fung Loong (The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong SAR) and Prof. Nick Pavlakis (The University of Sydney, Australia), the symposium — “Ai-powered Liquid Biopsy And Multi-omics In Action: Bridging The Gap In Genomic Insights Across The Asia-pacific Region”— drew a full-house audience. It featured actionable clinical evidence spanning early detection, treatment selection, and post-treatment monitoring.

Faculty included Asst. Prof. Aaron Tan Chia-Ken (National Cancer Centre Singapore, Singapore), Dr. Le Son Tran and Dr. Dang L. Nguyen (Medical Genetics Institute, Vietnam), and Prof. Aya El Helali (The University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong SAR). Key topics addressed:

  • Early detection at scale (SPOT-MAS): A single 10 mL blood, multi-omics assay combining genetic, epigenetic, fragmentomic features through deep-targeted and shallow genome-wide sequencing.
Trained on data from over 20,000 cancer patients and 25,000 healthy controls, it incorporates retrospective (K-DISCOVERY) and prospective (K-DETEK) cohorts of more than 11,000 asymptomatic individuals, with real-world deployment in over 30,000 people across six Asian countries.
  • Real-world performance of SPOT-MAS in 10 cancers: In a large real-world study comprising 12,281 individuals (median age 43 years) with enrichment for familial cancer risk (24.5%), the assay demonstrated a sensitivity of 78.2%, specificity of 99.8%, positive predictive value (PPV) of 67%, negative predictive value (NPV) of 99.9%, and tumor-of-origin prediction accuracy of 80.3%. These results were comparable to previously reported in the K-DETEK prospective validation study (n = 9,024).
  • Treatment selection & monitoring (K-TRACK ctDNA-MRD): Validated across colorectal, breast, lung, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), and gastric cancers to enable risk stratification and earlier intervention. Real-world Asian data indicate ctDNA detection of progression up to 14 months ahead of imaging and identification of resistance mechanisms in metastatic settings.
  • Advanced AI-driven Biomarkers (K-4CARE): The K-4CARE platform integrates DNA profiling (504 genes), transcriptomic profiling (19,435 genes), and longitudinal ctDNA-MRD monitoring—to support precision decision-making, including complex scenarios such as detecting tissue-of-origin with 87.7% prediction accuracy in cancer of unknown primary (CUP) and improving fusion detection by 20%.
  • ESMO consensus: The recent ESMO consensus (EBAI), published in November 2025, provides basic requirements for AI-based biomarkers in oncology – including ground truth, performance, generalizability, fairness and evidence requirements to establish their robustness.

Selected faculty insights:

The challenge is balancing multi-cancer early detection performance with affordability—we achieve this via robust feature engineering, supervised machine learning, and high-quality multi-omics training datasets” said Dr. Le Son Tran.

In early-stage cancer, cancers may still recur in some patients despite adjuvant treatment, while some patients may already be cured and do not need additional adjuvant therapy. MRD testing has the potential to transform how we manage these patients by allowing clinicians to escalate or de-escalate treatment more appropriately” added Asst. Prof. Tan Chia-Ken Aaron.

AI driven biomarkers won’t replace molecular testing; they will amplify it—especially when tissue is limited” commented Prof. Herbert Ho Fung Loong.

Scientific Recognition: Seven Abstracts and Two Best Posters

Meanwhile, Spain’s position as a tourism brand has been further consolidated, securing its place among the most popular travel destinations. Meanwhile, the latest data indicates that Chinese tourists’ expenditure in Spain will reach €1.417 billion in 2025, representing a 1.4% increase over 2024. This trend demonstrates Spain’s growing appeal to Chinese visitors, particularly among high-purchasing-power segments.

Regarding China’s overall tourism demand, the Spanish National Tourism Administration notes that both domestic and international source markets are experiencing sustained growth in travel expenditure. By 2026, driven by the lifting of travel restrictions, consumption recovery, and improved air connectivity, China’s domestic source market is projected to grow by 6%, while the international source market is expected to increase by 9% to 10%.

Football Australia hands down combined 15 years of bans for spot-fixing scandal

0

Football Australia has banned former Western United player Riku Danzaki for seven years and ex-Macarthur FC pair Clayton Lewis and Kearyn Baccus for at least four years over spot-fixing offences.

In August, Japanese footballer Danzaki was convicted and fined, along with amateur player Yuta Hirayama, for committing yellow card betting fraud

Hirayama would place bets on Danzaki deliberately receiving yellow cards.

Danzaki and Hirayama have been banned for seven years, backdated to June 1, when they were both issued no-fault interim suspensions by FA.

The 25-year-old winger therefore cannot play in Australia until June 1, 2032, when he would be 32, ending his career in the country.

In September, Baccus and Lewis were handed two-year conditional release orders, similar to a good behaviour bond, and avoided convictions after pleading guilty to engaging in conduct that corrupts the betting outcome of an event.

The pair admitted being paid $10,000 each by former club captain Ulises Davila to deliberately earn yellow cards at a match in December 2023.

They were also required to repay the money they received for getting the yellow cards as a fine.

Davila in October pleaded guilty to facilitating and engaging in conduct that corrupts the betting outcome of an event and is awaiting sentencing.

Lewis and Baccus were given five-year bans backdated to 17 May 2024, when they were both issued no-fault interim suspensions by FA.

Those bans will be cut by a year by completing community service.

FA confirmed the pair “were each offered the option and have elected to complete 200 hours of unpaid football-related community service to support FA’s integrity and education programs”.

That means their respective suspensions should finish in May 2028, when former New Zealand international Lewis will be 31 and Baccus will be 36.

It all but ends Baccus’s career while Lewis will be at the tail end of his professional football days.

“The community service element of the sanction is designed to provide the players an avenue of rehabilitation and constructive engagement with the football community during their bans,” FA said in a statement.

All four players have accepted their respective punishments and won’t appeal.

BRIAN MAY AND STARMUS MARK 10 YEARS OF THE STEPHEN HAWKING SCIENCE MEDAL WITH THE LAUNCH OF THE JANE GOODALL EARTH MEDAL

LONDON, Dec. 20, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — This week at London’s Royal Society, board members of the world-leading science and music festival STARMUS—Garik Israelian, Sir Brian May, Peter Gabriel, Lord Michael Hintze, and Lord Martin Rees—were joined by members of Jane Goodall’s family and Mary Lewis, Vice President of the Jane Goodall Institute, to announce STARMUS VIII and the launch of the Jane Goodall Earth Medal.

The medal will be awarded for the first time at STARMUS VIII, to be hosted in Tenerife and La Palma in 2026.

The announcement took place exactly ten years after STARMUS and Professor Stephen Hawking stood together at the Royal Society to launch the Stephen Hawking Medal for Science Communication, marking a decade of STARMUS’s commitment to uniting science, art, and humanity.

STARMUS Director and Co-Founder Garik Israelian said:
“Ten years ago, Stephen Hawking joined us to launch a medal that inspired millions to look to the stars. Today, with the blessing of Jane Goodall and her family, we launch a medal that calls us to protect the Earth. STARMUS VIII will unite these two visions — the cosmic and the planetary — in a festival dedicated to the search for truth.”

Stephen Hawking once said of STARMUS:
“In a world beset by so many terrible problems, STARMUS offers a ray of hope… a unique debating chamber for the future of the human race.”

In 2026, STARMUS will celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Stephen Hawking Medal, honoring a decade of scientists, creators, musicians, filmmakers, and communicators who have carried forward Hawking’s vision—encouraging humanity to question deeply and embrace the power of science.

At the same time, the festival will award the inaugural STARMUS Jane Goodall Earth Medal, a global honor recognizing voices who protect the planet, defend biodiversity, and redefine humanity’s relationship with nature. Approved and blessed by Dr. Jane Goodall, DBE, and her family, the medal extends the STARMUS mission into environmental and humanitarian action.

Jane Goodall held a cherished role within STARMUS as an Advisory Board Member, Hawking Medal laureate, keynote speaker, and a source of inspiration—particularly for the people of La Palma following the volcanic eruption. In private conversations with Israelian and Mary Lewis, she gave her blessing for an environmental and humanitarian medal to bear her name.

Merlin Van-Lawick, Jane Goodall’s grandson, said:
“We are deeply grateful that STARMUS chose to honor my grandmother in this way. We fully support this initiative, and Jane has given it her blessing.”

STARMUS Co-Founder Sir Brian May added:
Jane Goodall and Stephen Hawking changed how we see the world — one by looking to the stars, the other by reminding us to protect life on Earth. Bringing their legacies together is profoundly necessary for our time.”

Public safety concerns lead to cancellation of major New Year’s Eve events: What to know

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

As people around the world look forward to ringing in 2026, some major cities have already called off celebrations or special events.

Paris, for example, has called off its famous New Year’s Eve live concert on the Champs-Élysées.

The mayor of the 8th Arrondissement of Paris, Jeanne d’Hauteserre, told Agence France Press that the cancellation is due to concerns about “unpredictable crowds” and that the areas “are not sized to host this type of event where people are moving.”

Fireworks will still take place at the Arc de Triomphe. Instead of a live concert, however, a pre-recorded one will be broadcast.

In Tokyo, the Shibuya Countdown Event has been canceled by the organizing committee, according to a government press release.

“In order to create a safe and secure city, we continue to be vigilant against nuisance behavior arising from drinking on the street, as well as the risk of crowd accidents,” wrote Ken Hasebe, Shibuya Ward mayor, in the release.

The city of Belgrade in Serbia also announced that it’s canceled its celebrations. “This year there will be no organized New Year’s Eve nor Serbian New Year’s Eve celebration,” wrote Mayor Aleksandar Šapić in a press release.

The cancellations come as the FBI busted a New Year’s Eve bombing plot in Los Angeles earlier this week, arresting four alleged gang members.

The plot allegedly included a plan for coordinated bombing attacks using improvised explosive devices, meant to target five separate locations across the city, the FBI told Fox News Digital.

About a million people are expected to pack into Times Square in Manhattan for the famous New Year’s Eve ball drop.

Paul Mauro, a Fox News contributor and a former NYPD inspector, told Fox News Digital that New Year’s Eve is the biggest police detail probably in the country.

“New Year’s Eve is sort of the Super Bowl for the NYPD … You have to do everything you can to control that, not only for [terror] threats, but just for disorder,” said Mauro.

“You wouldn’t believe how many windows and rooms were secured.”

“You want to ensure that there aren’t people throwing bottles at each other and fighting, or somebody lets off firecrackers, or there’s a stampede.”

There is a ton of work that goes on behind the scenes in Times Square to secure the area, said Mauro.

He referenced planning “for weeks, if not months,” for New Year’s Eve just ahead of the year 2000.You wouldn’t believe how many windows and rooms were secured by the NYPD, federal agencies and state agencies to make sure that there was a ring around Times Square,” he said.

Mauro said today’s celebrations have gotten a lot more sophisticated.

For those who plan on being in Times Square on New Year’s Eve, Mauro said it’s essential to have a contingency plan.

“If you’re with a group of people, or if you’ve brought your kids in or something like that, it’s easy to get separated in the crowd,” he said. “If that happens, you can’t necessarily rely on your mobile phones … Sometimes the cell circuits in and around Times Square on New Year’s Eve get overloaded.”

Travelmation travel adviser Chemeeka Sparks told Fox News Digital that this year, she’s seeing more people opt for private or exclusive celebrations.

“Celebrating in New York’s Times Square is the quintessential way to ring in the New Year, but there are many people who never experience this because they don’t want to spend the holiday packed shoulder-to-shoulder with a million other people,” said Sparks.

She said curated events, dinners and cruises are gaining tractions for celebrations.

“The popularity of these experiences has increased since 2020, when people still wanted a memorable evening, just not surrounded by a lot of other people,” said Sparks.

“These include members-only clubs, high-end ticketed New Year’s Eve celebrations and ultra-private events.”
