Viral grandma and stranger she mistakenly texted to celebrate 10th Thanksgiving together

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Sometimes the best connections happen by chance — and for one Arizona pair, that bit of luck has turned into yet another Thanksgiving that they’re spending together. This year, it will be their 10th.

Back in 2016, Wanda Dench meant to invite her grandson to her Thanksgiving celebration. Instead, she accidentally texted Jamal Hinton of Phoenix.

The two realized the mistake once she sent a photo confirmation of herself, with Hinton responding, “[You’re] not my grandma,” and adding a laughing emoji.

AVERAGE COST OF THANKSGIVING DINNER LOWER THAN LAST YEAR

Hinton attached a selfie to confirm she had the wrong number, but Dench asked if he could stop by for dinner anyway

The story went viral on social media, and even now, their annual tradition continues to capture the hearts of Americans across the nation.

Dench and Hinton talked to Fox News Digital about how their accidental Thanksgiving invite blossomed into a decade-long friendship — and how they’re celebrating their 10th holiday together.

“I remember like it was yesterday because it was exciting and fun, and totally unexpected [in terms of] the end results when all the media kind of circled us,” said Dench. “Meeting Jamal was the best thing ever, and I am saying that from my heart. That’s true.”

Their unlikely friendship has remained a source of strength.

Hinton, for his part, said meeting Dench changed his life. “I remember it like it was yesterday, my senior year [of high school]. I was already like the popular kid, [and] I became like the super popular kid.”

He added, “But for me, the story’s been a blessing since day one.”

Even with Hinton’s move out of Arizona and then back, and now to Florida — plus the loss of Dench’s husband and a breast cancer diagnosis — their unlikely friendship has remained a source of strength.

This year will be extra special, as Dench said she is now officially cancer-free.

“Meeting Jamal was the best thing ever, and I am saying that from my heart. That’s true,” said Dench. (Thomas Ingersoll)

“When I was diagnosed, I was a little surprised because [breast cancer] doesn’t run in our family or anything, and at my age, I thought — I don’t know — I was past it, but obviously not,” said Dench.

She said at first, she wasn’t sure if she wanted to go public with her diagnosis. Yet friends and family encouraged her to use her platform to spread awareness, she said.

“I wanted to get the message out there to all women, but especially women in my age group, because I think when we get to my age, we think we’re past all the mammograms and everything, but we’re not,” said Dench. “We still have a life to live.”

Dench said Hinton encouraged her to share her diagnosis last October.

“Jamal goes, ‘This is a good month to do this because it’s breast cancer awareness month.’ And that was in October of last year.”

She added, joking, “I didn’t even know it was breast cancer awareness month, and I felt like I should have known that before him.”

Dench said she always thought it was the cutest thing, and that she’s been blessed by the outpouring of support she has received.

“I’m grateful that I got that message out there,” she said. “I’ve had a lot of responses. Women are thanking me for mentioning that, and they’re telling their mother or their grandmother,” she said.

Said Hinton, “I love the fact that she said that we have a story, and that it’s a really good feel-good story. And it comes around every single year.”

This year, Hinton will be “hosting” Thanksgiving. The meal will be catered through a partnership with Green Giant to celebrate the company’s 100th anniversary.

The product aims to solve the challenges of conventional home security systems, such as complicated setup, hidden fees, and difficulties in multi-zone monitoring, providing users with a truly “plug-and-play, hassle-free” security experience.

SEHMUA CK14S 2K Solar Security Camera System
SEHMUA CK14S 2K Solar Security Camera System

In the conventional home security market, users often need to buy hardware separately and face expensive monthly cloud storage fees, along with potential data privacy risks. SEHMUA’s new system overcomes these issues with an integrated design that links multiple cameras to a central homebase, providing a streamlined and highly efficient all-in-one security solution.

Home security should serve as a foundation of protection for the household, not as a complex and expensive burden. SEHMUA is committed to creating an easy-to-use security system that allows anyone, regardless of technical skill, to set up a reliable and robust security solution in just minutes. This is the value SEHMUA aims to convey to users.

Key Features Include:

Effortless Installation

Each camera communicates exclusively with the homebase, which connects to the router via Ethernet and supports dual-band WiFi (2.4GHz and 5GHz). The cameras establish a stable connection through a dedicated channel with the homebase without complex configuration or multiple apps. Paired with a solar panel power supply and homebase design, the system eliminates the most challenging issues of conventional camera setup—power access and network wiring. No need for professional assistance. Once installed, the conventional system works continuously without any further setup required.

No Monthly Fees with Homebase

By storing all recordings locally on the homebase, SEHMUA’s system eliminates monthly subscriptions. The built-in 64GB storage (expandable to 256GB) supports up to 120 days of video history. Users can fully access smart alerts and video playback features without recurring charges, putting an end to the common trap of ongoing subscriptions.

Multi-Zone Viewing & Ultimate Clarity

Users can view four live camera feeds simultaneously on one screen without manual switching. Each 4MP Full HD camera pans 355° and tilts 90° for complete coverage. With digital zoom, the system can capture key details such as license plates up to 32 feet away.

365-Day Non-Stop Power

Each camera comes equipped with a highly efficient 3W solar panel and a built-in 5200mAh rechargeable battery, providing reliable year-round performance without interruptions. Enjoy uninterrupted operation with no need for frequent recharges or complex wiring, giving you total freedom and flexibility.

User Privacy & Data Security

All recorded footage is securely stored locally on the homebase, ensuring that no data is uploaded to third-party cloud servers. Only the device owner and authorized users can access the video feed. Even if a camera is stolen, your video data remains secure, as the homebase stays safely within your home, preserving your privacy and peace of mind.

Ideal for:

Modern households prioritizing simplicity and privacy security

The system’s integrated setup and local storage feature perfectly cater to users who prefer avoiding complicated configurations and have high privacy requirements for cloud-based data.

Property managers with multi-zone security needs

Whether managing large homes, villas, small businesses, or rental properties, the system allows for effortless, simultaneous monitoring of key areas like front doors, backyards, and garages.

The user’s preference for long-term benefits

Ideal for users tired of recurring monthly fees and seeking long-term value through a one-time investment with full, ongoing functionality.

Why the answer to our housing crisis has been here all along

0

When the NSW government announced their latest move to help the housing shortage, it looked pretty familiar to me.

That move was the launch of the NSW Housing Pattern Book Mid-Rise Designs, a total of nine designs for mid-rise apartment blocks that come at a discounted price and are fast-tracked to make their way through the planning process more quickly.

According to NSW Planning Minister Paul Scully the “new patterns will write a new chapter for mid-rise homes in NSW,” building on a legacy of “art deco apartments … [and] red brick walk ups that are a much-loved part of many communities”.

Know the news with the 7NEWS app: Download today Arrow

An art deco apartment in a mid-rise block of three-storeys and nine apartments is what I live in.

It, along with blonde-brick similar sized blocks is , are housing styles that dominates my coastal suburb in Sydney.

Both of those type of apartments have also long been part of the landscape of large regional cities across Australia and NSW, in particular Newcastle and Wollongong.

The pattern book designs, of three-to-six storey apartment blocks, are proposed for infill sites in Low and Mid Rise Housing and Transport Oriented Development sites in these locations.

They are three cities that are facing increasing pressure to build more housing in established areas, with strong transport links and conveniences such as shopping and hospitals and health care.

But up till now it seems like there has been just two options in housing – either detached house on its own block of land or a towering high-rise that Australians have been reluctant to adopt – either as their own home or as a neighbour.

Another of the designs for mid-level apartments, this one from Ngulaway DesignInc. Source: NSW Planning
Another of the designs for mid-level apartments, this one from Ngulaway DesignInc. Source: NSW Planning Credit: View

So the move to something that is tried and tested, and sits more naturally into the scale of our suburbs, such as mid-rise housing seems a better choice.

First choice, not second best

And apartment living is a first choice, not a second best, for a growing number of Australians including myself.

In my building there is a mix of young single flatmates renting, newlyweds who have purchased their first home, families with young kids and empty-nesters.

We don’t do without a backyard, there is a communal oasis with a lawn for the kids to play, outdoor dining area and barbecue as well as the equivalent of a shed in the form of common underground storage for bikes.

With only nine apartments in the block, there has never been a double up of people wanting the sole use of the backyard at one time.

However it is a place to meet for families with young children to meet together and share a takeaway pizza from the Italian down the road or barbecue while the children play together.

There is no pool in the backyard, but an ocean pool and sandy beach at the end of the street more than makes up for that.

What we have given up in individual square metres of living space is more than made up by the stunning spots that we live in close proximity to and which we can utilise every day, not just for the occasional outing.

Human scale

One of the best aspects that these human scale mid-level apartments offer is community.

A communal space in the Ngulaway DesingInc pattern book building. Source: Planning NSW
A communal space in the Ngulaway DesingInc pattern book building. Source: Planning NSW Credit: View

Smaller size blocks become neighbourhoods within themselves. A central stairwell allows for incidental chats and an investment in a common property means people need to work together to enrich all.

There is the community within the apartment block but also very much in the neighbourhood, which has a large number of apartment blocks such as my own.

The local cafe and neighbourhood favourite restaurants, weekly farmers market and streets are all within walking distance. Be it on such walks to or at your destination, faces become familiar and daily convesations occur.

With less space inside, people tend to spend more time outside.

Old and new

Buildings of this era have their attractions, high ceilings and a solid build (our flats are understood to have been here since the 1930s but no one is really sure).

Importantly their scale fits into streets that have both apartments and houses, something that some of the pattern book houses, designed for smaller blocks also do.

The advantage of these new designs in the just-released pattern book is that they have taken the best from the past, in scale, and added modern design principles and amenity to make them comfortable for today’s living.

As Australians come to terms with embracing apartment living in the future, borrowing from the successes of the past in this arena could be the biggest step forward.

New national park passes put ‘American families first’ while tripling entry fees for some

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

The Department of the Interior (DOI) has announced the launch of “America the Beautiful passes,” offering digital and physical passes to access our nation’s most prized treasures.

The passes are intended to put “American families first” by implementing a new resident-focused fee beginning Jan. 1, 2026.

Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum said in a press release that the improvements aim to make the parks more accessible, affordable and efficient.

NEW TSA POLICY MAY CHARGE PASSENGERS WHO DO NOT HAVE ACCEPTABLE IDS AT CHECKPOINTS

“These policies ensure that U.S. taxpayers, who already support the National Park System, continue to enjoy affordable access, while international visitors contribute their fair share to maintaining and improving our parks for future generations,” said Burgum.

Americans can purchase annual passes for $80. Specials are being offered for seniors, allowing them to purchase a $20 annual pass or a lifetime pass for $80.

“U.S. residents will continue to enjoy affordable pricing, while nonresidents will pay a higher rate to help support the care and maintenance of America’s parks,” the press release notes.

Nonresidents who do not obtain an annual pass will need to fork over a $100-per-person fee to enter 11 parks on top of the standard entrance fee.

Over 330 million people visited America’s national parks in 2024, according to NPS.

Funds from the passes purchased online will support the entire National Park System, while passes purchased on site will primarily benefit that specific park, a DOI spokesperson told Fox News Digital.

“This revenue will help keep our parks beautiful and running well, including [addressing] the deferred maintenance backlog,” said the spokesperson. “The nonresident surcharge is a small fraction of total trip costs (airfare, lodging, transport) for foreign tourists.”

The passes will support upgrades to visitor facilities, essential maintenance and overall improved services.

Korean Temple Food: A Globally Recognized Sustainable Culinary Culture

Korean Temple Food, Designated as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage, Expands Its Global Reach Through International Events and Cultural Diplomacy

SEOUL, South Korea, Nov. 26, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Korean Temple Food, rooted in 1,700 years of Korean Buddhist wisdom, is receiving renewed global attention following its recent designation as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage by the Korean government. More than a vegetarian cuisine, temple food reflects a philosophy centered on respect for all life, moderation, and gratitude. Its plant-based preparation methods highlight the natural flavors of seasonal ingredients and promote harmony between nature and humans—values increasingly aligned with today’s global focus on sustainability and mindful living.

To share the cultural and spiritual depth of temple food with the international community, the Cultural Corps of Korean Buddhism organized three major global events this year—ranging from large-scale festivals and academic symposia to cultural diplomacy initiatives abroad.

In June, the 4th Korean Temple Food Festival was held at the aT Center in Seoul, marking the largest festival of its kind in a decade. Eleven temples from across Korea participated, offering a broad range of programs, including lectures, hands-on workshops, and demonstrations led by six master monks and nuns(Sunim) specializing in temple cuisine. The event attracted more than 20,000 visitors over two days. Notably, 47% of attendees were in their 20s and 30s, a strong indicator of the growing interest in sustainable, plant-based food culture among younger generations.

In August, the Temple Food International Academic Symposium was held at the National Palace Museum of Korea in Seoul, bringing together experts from Korea, the United States, the United Kingdom, Italy, and China to discuss “The Potential of Temple Food as a Sustainable Culinary Culture.” Brendan R. Walsh, dean of The Culinary Institute of America, emphasized the significance of Ogwan-ge (Five Contemplations)—the Buddhist reflection recited before meals to understand the meaning of gongyang (offering)—noting that “its principles speak directly to the core of culinary practice and its future.” He added that “the answer lies in temple food,” expressing interest in incorporating its values into the CIA curriculum.

From late October to early November, the Temple Food International Cultural Diplomacy events in Paris, France, and London, UK, directly introduced the contemplative spirit of temple food to gourmet experts and influencers in Europe.

In France, the Korean-style salad ‘Deodeok Beomuri’ (Marinated Deodeok (Korean bellflower root)) presented by Temple Food Artisan Venerable Yeogeo Sunim received a great response at a dinner reception hosted by the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in France, commemorating next year’s 140th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Korea and France. In the UK, the depth of temple food was conveyed through ‘Korean Temple Food Week,’ co-hosted with the Korean Cultural Centre UK and Le Cordon Bleu London. Venerable Yeogeo Sunim gave a lecture at the Le Cordon Bleu London campus, and Temple Food Master Venerable Jeong Kwan Sunim, widely known for her contemplative approach and for her appearance on Netflix’s Chef’s Table, showcased the restraint and meditative character of temple food by hosting a luncheon and a pop-up restaurant at the fine-dining establishment ‘CORD by Le Cordon Bleu.’ Emil Minev, Dean of Le Cordon Bleu London, commented, “Temple food is a culinary practice that embodies harmony with nature and respect for life, and I strongly support the Cultural Corps’ future endeavor to register temple food with UNESCO.”

Meanwhile, the Cultural Corps has continued its cultural diplomacy since signing a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Korean Cultural Centre UK and Le Cordon Bleu London in April 2021, regularly hosting lectures and demonstrations of Korean Temple Food within Le Cordon Bleu’s Plant-Based Culinary Arts Program.

Temple food is a unique Korean culinary culture embodying the Buddhist spirit of respecting life and temperance, and it is now taking its first step toward inscription as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The Cultural Corps stated, “We hope that temple food will evolve into a recognized model of sustainable living and spiritual well-being,” adding, “We will continue to foster global exchange in sustainable, plant-based food culture connecting Korea and the world.”

Amidst this global interest, visitors to Korea can directly experience temple food at key locations operated by the Cultural Corps of Korean Buddhism. At the ‘Korean Temple Food Center’ in Insadong, Seoul, they can learn about temple food through introductory one-day workshops designed for international participants. At ‘Balwoo Gongyang,’ the world’s first Michelin-starred temple food restaurant, visitors can savor the essence of temple food through course meals made with fresh seasonal ingredients.

The healing, contemplative spirit and the wisdom of sustainable living conveyed by a single bowl of food are now spreading throughout the world.
