St Kilda player Lance Collard hit with monster ban for homophobic slur in VFL clash

0

St Kilda player Lance Collard has been handed a nine-week ban (two weeks suspended) after being found guilty of using a homophobic slur.

The AFL tribunal last Friday upheld a charge of “conduct unbecoming” against Collard, who had rejected suggestions he called his Frankston opponent a “f*****g f*****” during a VFL match last month.

A hearing on Tuesday determined the lengthy sanction, which is the second time the 21-year-old has been banned for using a homophobic slur.

The AFL argued for a 10-match ban, while the Saints said that would potentially be “career-ending”, and added that a fine or a maximum four-match ban would be more appropriate.

The tribunal deliberated for over an hour before landing on the nine-week ban, which is effectively seven weeks given two of the weeks are suspended for the next two seasons.

The ban will serve on top of the separate two-match striking ban from the same game.

The club will now assess their options, but had previously indicated they will consider appealing it.

In submissions on Tuesday, AFL representative Andrew Woods SC argued there needed to be an increased penalty for repeat offending and proposed a 10-week ban.

“There should be an increased sanction by matches, rather than way of fine, to what happened last time,” Woods said.

St Kilda’s representative Michael Borsky KC urged the tribunal to “show some mercy” to Collard, noting the player’s difficult upbringing and the possible effect a 10-week ban could have on his career.

Borsky suggested such a penalty would be “unfairly punitive”, instead calling for a financial sanction, or at most a four-week ban.

He also said the AFLPA, via a letter submitted to the tribunal, had described a 10-week ban as “disproportionate and one that could risk constituting an unreasonable restraint of trade”.

“It would, we submit, be potentially career-ending for this young man,” Borsky said.

“You heard that he has only one year left on his contract and he has … been in and out of the AFL team, as distinct from the VFL team.

“And so, to be perfectly frank, this is one of those sliding door moments that could set Lance Collard back on the wrong path and ruin his life.”

In delivering its verdict, the tribunal said Collard’s homophobic slur was “serious” and declared the use of such language “harmful and entirely unacceptable”.

The tribunal also took into account that it was Collard’s second offence and that he expressed no remorse by contesting the charge on this occasion.

“We do not make it part of this sanction, but we strongly urge Mr Collard to resume the awareness training that he undertook in 2024,” the tribunal said.

“It’s not clear on the evidence how many sessions Mr Collard attended, or over what period, but it is likely that that ongoing training over a period of time would be beneficial, particularly in respect to a person who has offended again.”

The tribunal also noted Collard’s use of the homophobic word did not appear premeditated and agreed with Borsky that a 10-week ban could have ended the player’s career.

“A sanction that is excessive may be crushing in a sense that it could seriously impact or even end Collard’s VFL/AFL career,” the tribunal said.

Collard, who was banned for six matches for using the same homophobic word in 2024, was adamant he did not use it this time and even signed a statutory declaration.

The marathon hearing took place last Thursday, but the tribunal panel did not reach a determination before the 5pm deadline, and released their decision on Friday evening.

Collard insisted he said, “Come here, maggot”, to Frankston player Darby Hipwell.

But Hipwell was adamant that was not the case.

“He had his head up against my ear and he said the words to me, ‘Darby, you ‘f****** f****t’,” Hipwell said.

The allegation was supported by Hipwell’s teammate Bailey Lambert.

Hipwell and Collard previously played together with VFL club Sandringham when the Zebras were St Kilda’s state-league affiliate.

Collard has played 15 AFL games since being taken by the Saints in the 2023 draft.

He is already serving a two-match ban stemming from a high hit on an opponent in the same VFL match in which he allegedly uttered the homophobic slur.

The Saints last week said they would continue to support Collard, who is contracted until the end of 2027, through the process.

Ancient ocean mystery deepens as long-misidentified fossil is finally revealed by researchers

0

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

More than two decades after scientists identified a fossil as the world’s oldest octopus — officials now say it wasn’t one at all.

A recent study published in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B found that the fossil Pohlsepia mazonensis — a 300-million-year-old sea creature found in the Mazon Creek fossil beds of northeastern Illinois — was closer to a nautilus than an octopus.

Researchers now believe the creature was a relative of the nautilus, which is a shell-covered cephalopod with tentacles.

NEW ‘HELL HERON’ SPINOSAURUS SPECIES FOUND IN REMOTE SAHARA 70 YEARS AFTER FOSSIL CLUE

Cephalopods are a class of marine animals that includes octopuses, squids and cuttlefish, and are known for their tentacles and advanced nervous systems — and for lacking rigid skeletons.

The fossil was identified as the world’s oldest octopus in 2000 — but is now considered the oldest soft-tissue nautilus in the world.

Researchers say the fossil’s features, including its teeth, align more closely with a nautilus relative than an octopus. A picture of a nautilus is seen above. (iStock)

University of Reading zoologist Thomas Clements, the lead researcher of the new study, told The Associated Press the fossil is a “very difficult [one] to interpret.”

He added, “To look at it, it kind of just looks like a white mush.”

ARCHAEOLOGISTS FIND ARTIFACTS OLDER THAN STONEHENGE BENEATH BRITAIN’S HOUSES OF PARLIAMENT: ‘INCREDIBLY RARE’

“If you look at it, and you are a cephalopod researcher, and you’re interested in everything octopus, it does superficially look a lot like a deep-water octopus.”

The determining factor, Clements said, was its teeth — which researchers examined using a synchrotron to peer inside the fossil.

They found that each row had 11 teeth — more than the seven or nine typically found in octopuses.

TEST YOURSELF WITH OUR LATEST LIFESTYLE QUIZ

“This has too many teeth, so it can’t be an octopus,” Clements said.

“And that’s how we realized that the world’s oldest octopus is actually a fossil nautilus, not an octopus.”

Researchers found the fossil had 11 teeth per row, more than typically seen in octopuses — prompting a reclassification. (iStock)

The fossil had the same teeth as a nautiloid called Paleocadmus pohli, an ancient creature found in the same area.

Researchers say the mix-up likely occurred because the creature decomposed and lost its shell before it was fossilized.

“People have been questioning whether it was an octopus ever since the original paper was first published in 2000.”

The next oldest-known octopus fossil is about 90 million years old — around 210 million years younger than the fossil Pohlsepia mazonensis.

“It’s a huge gap,” Clements said, noting it had long raised questions.

“And so that big gap got researchers sort of questioning, ‘Is this thing actually an octopus?'”

The fossil is currently held in the Field Museum in Chicago

Paul Mayer, who manages the museum’s fossil invertebrate collections, said he was “a little surprised” by the new classification, but acknowledged that scientists have questioned the finding for years.

Delta Air Lines unveils first new Delta One suite in premium cabin arms race

Delta Air Lines on Monday unveiled an updated Delta One suite for some of its longest-haul planes, marking its first refresh of the top-tier seat in a decade as airline competition for well-heeled travelers ramps up.

The new suites, which Delta said will debut on its Airbus A350-1000 aircraft in 2027, will include beds that are three inches longer than the older suites and a new pillow-top cushion. The new design will give travelers more leg and knee room, said Mauricio Parise, Delta’s vice president of brand experience.

“Most customers are side sleepers,” and the new designs could accommodate them, he said.

Delta had customers test the new suites out for “hours” at the company’s headquarters, Parise said.

The airline’s Delta One business class cabin debuted nearly a decade ago on the A350s, featuring lie-flat beds, doors and a “do not disturb” button.

“We were a first mover, [and] started flying with doors in 2017,” Parise said. “There is an element of improvement.”

The A350-1000s, which are dedicated to long-haul flights, will have 50 of the suites.

The changes come as industry profit leader Delta and other airlines are refreshing their cabins, adding more expensive — and profitable — premium seats as wealthier customers continue to drive results.

The company said that premium ticket revenue, from first class and other more expensive options compared with coach, was up 14% in the first quarter over last year. Main cabin revenue, meanwhile, increased for the first time since late 2024.

Delta’s rival, United Airlines, showed off its new long-haul Polaris suite at the carrier’s hangar at Los Angeles International Airport last month, along with a slew of other products aimed at giving travelers more chances to pay up for additional space, ranging from a three-seat coach row that converts into a bed to both lie-flat and premium economy seats on narrow-body Airbus jets.

Alibaba Leads RMB 2 Billion Series B to Support General World Model Development

SINGAPORE, April 13, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — ShengShu Technology, a global leader in multimodal generative AI, today announced the global launch of Vidu Q3 Reference-to-Video, a new model capability designed for story-driven video creation through flexible reference-based generation.

Built for storytelling, Vidu Q3 Reference-to-Video enables creators to generate high-quality videos by referencing and combining a wide range of inputs—including subjects, environments, costumes, props, and visual styles—within a single workflow, significantly improving creative control, consistency, and efficiency.

The release expands capabilities across visual effects, audio, and scene composition. It supports six types of cinematic visual effects, including particle systems, fluid simulation, dynamic motion, camera movement, transitions, and lighting, enabling more expressive visual outputs. In parallel, the model enhances audio generation with five categories of sound capabilities for more natural and expressive results, covering ambient sound, motion-driven audio, atmospheric layers, foley effects, and emotion-driven cues. Together, these improvements enable greater scene diversity and more immersive, production-ready video outputs.

Designed for use cases including short-form series, animation, film and television, as well as advertising and e-commerce, Vidu Q3 Reference-to-Video enables faster production of high-quality video content for both creators and enterprises. This performance is further reflected in third-party benchmarks, where Vidu Q3 ranked No.1 in the first global Reference-to-Video leaderboard released by SuperCLUE.

Built on the Vidu Q3 model foundation, Vidu has been fully integrated across its product ecosystem, including Vidu Agent, Vidu Claw, and the Vidu App. This creates a unified system supporting the full workflow from creative ideation and content production to deployment, enabling greater efficiency and consistency across diverse use cases.

The release reflects ShengShu’s broader progress in advancing its world model capabilities across digital environments.

In parallel with the product release, ShengShu announced it has raised RMB 2 billion in its Series B financing round, led by Alibaba Cloud, with participation from Andon Haitang, China Internet Investment Fund, TAL Education Group, Luminous Ventures, and others. Existing investors, including LINK-X CAPITAL, Delta Capital, and Baidu Ventures, also increased their investment.

The funding will support ShengShu’s broader vision of building a general world model that bridges the digital and physical worlds. The company is advancing both its World Generation Model (WGM), which powers digital content creation through the Vidu model family, and its World Action Model (WAM), designed for physical-world interaction. Together, these systems aim to enable unified modeling, prediction, and action across environments.

ShengShu is among the first globally to pursue a unified world model architecture that connects digital and physical domains. At the core of this system is its Foundation World Model, which underpins both WGM and WAM.

Within this framework, the Vidu model family focuses on content generation and interaction in digital environments. It supports synchronized audio-visual generation, extended video duration, strong temporal and spatial consistency, and cinematic-quality visuals. Its proprietary reference-based video generation capability addresses consistency challenges in multi-subject video production.

At launch, Vidu Q3 ranked No.1 globally on the benchmark published by Artificial Analysis. It supports up to 16 seconds of synchronized audio and video generation, multi-shot composition and camera control, background music and sound effect generation, and multilingual dialogue. The launch of Reference-to-Video further expands its capabilities across visual effects, audio, and application scenarios.

Vidu is available to global developers, creators, and enterprises through both MaaS (Vidu API platform) and SaaS offerings, and has been integrated into Alibaba Cloud Model Studio to support text-to-video, image-to-video, and reference-to-video generation across industries including internet, advertising, film and animation, education, and cultural tourism.

Dr. Zhu Jun, Founder of ShengShu Technology, said:
“At its core, a world model gives AI a unified way to represent and predict the real world.
Video plays a critical role in this, as it naturally captures time, space, motion, and causality.
By building a unified model architecture, we aim to connect perception and action—creating a complete loop from understanding the world, to generating it, to acting within it, and ultimately making the world model a true bridge between the digital and physical worlds.”

Coalition considers extending paid parental leave to 12 months as families push for more childcare options

0

Paid parental leave could be extended to 12 months as part of a broader suite of childcare reforms the federal opposition is considering to give Australian families more flexibility.

The Coalition is exploring a range of policy changes including tax breaks for families and reforms to subsidy rules allowing payments to grandparents who help care for children.

It comes as more parents return to work and seek alternatives to childcare centres.

Know the news with the 7NEWS app: Download today Arrow

In Sydney, one emerging model is trying to meet that demand.

The co-working space is designed for parents, with mothers and fathers working at desks while their babies are cared for just next door.

BubbaDesk founder Lauren Perrett created the concept after becoming a mother and struggling with the idea of leaving her baby in traditional daycare.

“When I had my first baby, Charles, and the thought of returning to work, I didn’t want to use traditional daycare because I didn’t like the idea of being a physical distance away from him,” she told 7NEWS.

“It just didn’t feel right instinctually, or my maternal instinct, just wanted to remain close.

“I wanted to continue breastfeeding. And there was no solution that offered that workspace with childcare next door. So I created it myself.”

‘The future of childcare’

The model allows parents to work nearby while remaining connected to their children throughout the day.

Perrett says the idea reflects how modern families now work.

“Forty per cent of the workforce works hybridly and there has been no childcare solution that has worked for the modern family until now,” she said.

She believes the approach could represent a shift in how childcare is delivered.

“This is definitely the future of childcare. I think all parents want flexibility and they want to make their own choice about what childcare option works for them.”

Demand has surged since the company launched in November 2022.

“We’ve had about 2500 members, but we have a wait list of about 13,000, and that’s across the whole of Australia,” Perrett said.

For Sydney mother Tia Gargoulakis, the arrangement has helped her balance work and parenting.

She helps manage several dental practices across NSW and works from the co-working space while her daughter Sia is cared for next door.

“We’re expected to parent as if we don’t have a full-time job and work as if we don’t have children,” she said.

“This gives me an opportunity to parent the way I want to parent and be close to my child but also still maintain my employment.”

Sydney mother Tia Gargoulakis said BubbaDesk has helped her balance work and parenting.

The model is privately funded and not currently supported through government childcare subsidies, but it has caught the attention of the federal opposition.

Shadow Minister for Childcare Choice Matt O’Sullivan says the current system does not work for every family.

“The one-size-fits-all system that the Albanese government have been pursuing with earnest is not suitable for all families,.” O’Sullivan told 7NEWS.

“We want to see greater flexibility and choice when it comes to childcare.”

He said the Coalition is considering allowing funding to go directly to families so they can choose the care arrangement that works best.

“We think there needs to be greater flexibility so that parents can actually choose what model will work for them and that could include parents being able to source their own informal care,” he said.

‘We’re the backup people’

That could include support for grandparents who already provide childcare for many Australian families.

Ann and Edmond O’Donovan help care for their 12 grandchildren whenever their children need help.

“We know what that’s like. We’ve had our own family so just getting some of those breaks for parents … (is) very important,” Ann said.

“It could be anything. It could be picking the children up from school, going to have a play in the playground or dropping them home after school.

“We’re the back-up people.”

Ann and Edmond O’Donovan help care for their dozen grandchildren.

While they help out voluntarily, Edmund believes government support should be available for families who rely on informal care.

“I do think it should be an option that the parents have access to,” he said.

The biggest policy under consideration by the Coalition is expanding paid parental leave.

“It’s currently six months, you could extend that out to 12 months or so to provide that support, particularly in that very acute period of a child’s life,” O’Sullivan said.

He said the opposition is examining a wide range of childcare options.

“We’re not putting any roadblocks in front of any particular model and nor am I saying exactly what we’re going to do here today because we’re going through the process of actually working out the best way to provide that support and flexibility to families,” he said.

Shadow Minister for Childcare Choice Matt O’Sullivan says the current system does not work for every family.

Advocates have long called for longer paid parental leave to give parents more choice during their child’s earliest years.

Extending the scheme would come with a significant cost to the federal budget, but the Coalition says it sees childcare policy as an investment in families.

“It’s an investment of taxpayers’ money into families and making sure that families have got the best system that suits them,” O’Sullivan said.

Luckless Giant Stephen Coniglio shattered after suffering a ‘brutal’ concussion during clash against Richmond

0

Greater Western Sydney veteran Stephen Coniglio has suffered a concussion after a “brutal” blow during Sunday’s clash against Richmond.

Late in the second term, Coniglio attempted to smother a kick from Sam Banks but was collected flush on the side of the head by the Tiger’s lower leg.

Coniglio immediately looked shaken before making his way to the bench.

“Yeah that looks brutal doesn’t it,” Joel Selwood said on Channel 7.

“He looked a little bit depleted down here on the bench.

“He headed to the rooms slightly before the other players.”

The 32-year-old sat on the bench for a few minutes before heading down to the race to the rooms just ahead of half-time.

He then underwent an HIA assessment during the long break. But he failed it and was ruled out for the remainder of the match.

Coniglio will also miss next week’s blockbuster derby against Sydney.

It continues a nightmare run on the injury front for the former captain.

He managed just 10 matches last year and 15 the year before, but had been in good form to start 2026 after a near faultless pre-season.

“He’s been one of the shining lights over the first month so hopefully it’s just a little bump for him,” Selwood added.

Coniglio has suffered multiple concussions in his career, including a horrific incident in 2024 that resulted in five facial fractures and a lengthy recovery.

Last year he was sidelined indefinitely after struggling with a mystery nerve issue.

Meanwhile, gun forward Aaron Cadman also suffered a huge head knock midway through the last quarter that saw him sit out the remainder of the match.

Cadman, who was playing his first game of the season, had impressed with a brilliant four-goal haul.

The two injuries took the gloss off a dominant performance from the Giants.

They exploded out of the blocks with an eight-goal first term to leave the Tigers shellshocked.

To Richmond’s credit, they fought back and closed to within 20 points in the third quarter, but the Giants put the foot down again to run away with the 56-point win.

Returning star Brent Daniels kicked three goals, while Jesse Hogan booted two.

Finn Callaghan (37 disposals), Lachie Ash (35) and Lachie Whitfield (31) all racked up plenty of possessions, while Clayton Oliver helped himself to 31 and eight clearances in a strong outing.

More to come …
