Lazy exercise is still exercise. How to make the most out of your workout by doing the least.

0

There are some people who can’t get enough when it comes to exercise — the ones who are up at the crack of dawn for a jog, who squeeze in a class during their lunch break and prioritize boot camps over brunch on the weekends.

And then there are the rest of us. We know we need to exercise — for at least 150 minutes per week, plus two days of muscle-strengthening activities, per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention — but we don’t necessarily want to. Or maybe we struggle to find the time (not to mention the energy), get easily bored or feel out of our element (and out of shape) at the gym.

Enter: lazy exercise. Yes, there are ways to incorporate movement and exercise into your life without doing the whole no-pain-no-gain thing, or pushing yourself too far out of your comfort zone. Here’s how.

Many people aim to walk 10,000 steps per day. Though you don’t actually have to hit this specific number, you can at least focus on beating your weekly average step count (which your smartphone or fitness tracker can measure). Walking comes with all sorts of health benefits, and it’s a simple way to ensure you’re spending less time sitting around (which is not so great for you).

The good news about people who dread exercise? Walking is pretty low-key and easy to work into your day. If you hate how much time exercise takes in your busy life, try getting in some extra steps while you’re busy doing errands (like, say, at the mall); sneak in some laps while your kids play at the park; walk to the store to grab stuff for dinner instead of taking your car; or take work phone calls while pacing around your office.

Does a 45-minute class feel like too much of a time commitment? Kira Jones Matousek, founder and CEO of the fitness app Cacti Wellness, tells Yahoo Life that her app features short workout videos — all under 20 minutes — in order for people to build exercises into their life in sustainable ways.

“My big mindset around wellness and working out is that it’s all about consistency and building habits that you can actually stick to,” Matousek says. “If you’re more likely to do 10 minutes of core every day than going just once a week to a really hard workout class, when you are then sore and don’t have the energy to go back … then it becomes a lifestyle.”

Look for apps or YouTube videos that offer shorter workouts that are simple to squeeze in — like when you need a break between Zoom meetings or are waiting for your dinner to cook.

TikToker Hope Zuckerbrow introduced the world to “cozy cardio” when she shared her morning routine, which includes waking up early, making herself a fun beverage (like a protein coffee) and then using a walking pad while watching her favorite TV show. Zuckerbrow didn’t even change out of her fuzzy socks in order to get her steps in.

Research says that associating walking with something that makes you feel good (like, say, watching the latest episode of Vanderpump Rules) is an example of pairing — and it can help the habit stick. So, if you can only catch up on your reality TV drama when you’re on the walking pad, that might just be the incentive you need to keep it up.

If much of your job is answering emails and Slack messages, consider doing it from a treadmill, says Matousek. She says you should walk at a pace where you are putting a little effort in, but can very comfortably keep up a conversation. “Then up the incline a little bit,” she says. Doing so is a “sneaky way to recruit your muscles,” such as your glutes, calves and posterior chain. Since you’re likely focused on sending out emails and communicating with co-workers, you might find that the workout (and work day) flies by.

You don’t need to do a formal workout class in order to benefit from this form of “lazy” exercise. Try what’s called “exercise snacking,” which are short bursts of activity throughout your day. Maybe that means a few rounds of push-ups in between meetings, and then a couple of sets of squats when your day is done.

These exercise snacks can spike your heart rate (important, considering how we do need those 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week) but they’re way easier to fit into your life than a sustained cardio workout.

While you may not feel like you’re getting a full workout in, these snacks add up, breaking up sedentary time and helping you burn calories and build muscle.

Sometimes, you find yourself in the gym with almost no motivation to move your body. David Mason, sports coach and founder of travel fitness website Barbells Abroad, tells Yahoo Life that when he feels that way, he aims for the “Lazy 45,” in which he picks three or four different cardio machines (like the stair climber, elliptical, treadmill or rower) and switches them up every 10 to 15 minutes. “The beauty is if you’re feeling a little sluggish, the time slots are short enough to know each one is almost over as soon as you start,” he explains.

Exercise that involves standing up? Don’t bother on extra lazy days. If you want to relax while still working out, why not aim for a mat workout instead?

Maeve McEwen, director of programming and head trainer at Pvolve, tells Yahoo Life that getting closer to the ground can encourage you to connect more with your muscles and overall feel more supported. Plus, McEwen says you can also “use props like the wall, balls, pillows or the ground to help alleviate fatigue and support your form,” she says.

There are a bunch of different workouts that involve lying down, including mat Pilates and stretching. Matousek’s Cacti Wellness has a side lying series, in which participants use resistance bands for leg exercises. “You can put your head in your hand, and it’s not going to make it less of a workout for your lower body,” she notes.

You don’t have to plan for lazy exercise all the time — which makes it the most convenient of all. Just tweak your basic routine to be a tiny bit more active or challenging. Here are some examples:

  • Take the stairs instead of the elevator

  • Use a resistance band to do some thigh work during a long work meeting

  • Make your chores more active, like putting some extra muscle into scrubbing your bathtub

  • Carry your kid’s backpack while walking home from school (it’s basically rucking)

  • Balance on one foot while brushing your teeth or cooking

  • Play an active video game

  • Add wrist or ankle weights while walking the dog

‘Coolcations’ had another big summer. Here are the places travelers went

0

Extreme temperatures are driving travelers to seek cooler destinations. And there’s a term for the trend: “coolcations.”

Heat waves — which are increasing in frequency, duration and intensity, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency — are affecting where people are choosing to vacation, especially during the hot summer months.

“Often, when we think of vacation, beaches and tropical escapes come to mind,” a spokesperson for Expedia told CNBC Travel. “Coolcations however, are all about opting for destinations where the temperatures are more moderate, where you’re packing a light sweater instead of a sun hat.”

From January to June 2024, flight searches increased 705% to Lapland, Finland, according to Expedia. The online travel agency said flight searches are also up to Canada, specifically Banff (65%) and Lake Louise (55%), its data showed.

The home rental website Vrbo reported that cooler places emerged among the top 40 most booked destinations this summer, a list which included Breckenridge, Colorado; White Mountains, New Hampshire; and Pocono Mountains, Pennsylvania.

Californian Stephanie Greitzer said she planned a family trip to Whistler this summer.

“We live in the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles where we experience extreme heat for most of the summer, reaching highs well above 100,” she said. “We want to be comfortable when we are traveling to experience all a city has to offer and take a break from the extreme heat at home.”

Southern Europe sizzles

European cities, such as Rome and Madrid, top the list of popular summer destinations. But rising temperatures in southern Europe are hitting the summer travel season hard.

This summer, Italian officials placed 12 cities under heat warnings, as temperatures hit triple digits in some areas.

“For the summer as a whole, June through August, temperatures averaged 3-8 degrees F above historical averages in southern Italy,” Jason Nicholls, lead international forecaster for the weather website AccuWeather, wrote in an email to CNBC. “There were several rounds of heat across Italy and into the Balkans later in July into August.”

As a result, northern Europe is seeing an uptick in tourism.

“Northern Europe as a whole has really surged in the last two years,” says Delphine Combes, a product executive at the travel agency Scott Dunn. “Norway has emerged as a top five destination for us in Europe, which is up eight spots from 2022.”

She said Scott Dunn is adding more options for summer trips to Finland, Sweden and Switzerland to accommodate increased demand.

“These are destinations where we only offered winter and festive products until recently,” said Combes.

According to Visit Finland, foreign visitors made more than 4.8 million trips to the Nordic country in the last 12 months. The number of registered foreign overnights from January to June 2024 was 9% higher year on year, with the largest number of visitors coming from Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Sweden, the United States and the Netherlands, it said.

Book early

Combes had a suggestion for American travelers who are looking for cooler vacations.

“Be open-minded to traveling to places where Americans are not the primary tourists,” she said. “Unlike the Mediterranean, many coolcation spots are not packed with Americans. It creates an interesting atmosphere that allows perhaps a more cultural experience.”

More travelers are searching for flights to Lapland, Finland, where summer temperatures average 50–60°F, according to the travel agency Nordic Visitor.

Combes also suggests booking early. “There are fewer quality hotels in a lot of the cooler, less visited destinations. Growing demand is starting to outpace hotel inventory, so pricing will either be sky-high or there will be no availability if you wait until the last minute.”

Sara Steele-Rogers and her husband, who currently live on the Caribbean island of Anguilla, booked a trip to Estonia in September to beat the heat.

“It’s always hot in the Caribbean, so cooler weather destinations are more appealing than they ever were to get our taste of fall,” says Steele-Rogers. “Little things like being able to walk distances without sweating through my clothes are things you don’t miss until they’re gone.”

This rural destination is paying people $16K to move there, work remotely

0

A rural region in Spain is paying remote workers $16,000 to relocate and conduct business in a rolling green valley, just under three hours from Madrid.

And it’s not the only country offering workers and entrepreneurs money to move — the list of countries seeking “digital nomads” is growing.

Last month, the Regional Government of Extremadura, an autonomous community located in the central-western Iberian Peninsula, announced its new “Live in Ambroz” program, designed to attract remote workers by offering about $16,620 in grants if they commit to living and working there for at least two years.

AMTRAK ANNOUNCES ‘FLORIDIAN’ TRAIN WITH 2-DAY ROUTE, SPARKING REACTIONS ON SOCIAL MEDIA

“This phenomenon is going to change where people live, and it’s going to change the spatial distribution of talent,” Prithwiraj Choudhury, a professor at Harvard Business School in Boston, told Fox News Digital.

Choudhury has studied innovation, remote work and the concept of “work from anywhere” for more than a decade.

“Many economists thought that talent would all flock to the megacities and that megacities were the future of the world,” Choudhury said.

“I think that’s changing to some extent now. So, of course, megacities will remain important, but some people will live in communities outside the cities, especially if they can work remotely. There’ll be a diverse range of places where talent will be found.”

TRAVELERS WILL NEED ‘PERMISSION’ AND A FEE TO VISIT UNITED KINGDOM AS PART OF NEW DIGITIZED SYSTEM

The people with that talent — plus the ability to work remotely and a desire to see the world — are called digital nomads.

Chart created by Prithwiraj Choudhury

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, they’ve formed a sort of symbiotic relationship with countries around the world, trading consumption of goods and services for a lower cost of living in a new and often beautiful environment.

Surrounded by mountains, the Ambroz Valley is made of lush green pasture lands, charming villages with diverse accommodations and local artisan cuisine.

But its largest village, Hervás, has a population of just 3,907, and some municipalities have less than 200 residents.

‘HUSH VACATIONS’ TREND AS REMOTE WORKERS SLIP OFF FOR TRAVEL GETAWAYS WITHOUT TELLING THE BOSS

It’s an issue known as “Empty Spain” which “Live in Ambroz” aims to combat.

The objective of remote workers moving to a rural region in Spain is to prevent any depopulation in those areas that are suffering.

The main objective is to prevent depopulation in rural areas, and the Ambroz Valley is one of the areas that is suffering from a constant loss of population and services, according to a press release from the Regional Government of Extremadura.

“The obvious benefits to the community are that when digital nomads come and spend time in that community, they spend consumption dollars,” Choudhury said.

MAN TRAVELS THE WORLD ON A CRUISE SHIP FOR FREE AFTER QUITTING HIS DAY JOB: ‘HAVE LEARNED SO MUCH’

“They go to restaurants, they stay in hotels or [an] Airbnb. But I think the much bigger benefit could be to facilitate connections between locals and the nomads in a way that the community can then gain knowledge and even entrepreneurship opportunities.”

Digital nomads are gaining financially and in experience. (iStock)

Digital nomads are getting their fair share, whether financial or experiential, Choudhury added.

“Some people are just looking for a place they can relocate to and live, which is cheaper than where they [currently] live,” he said.

“You could move to a cheaper place, and if you’re allowed to work remotely, then you can have the same income but spend much less on housing and other things, and then you have more savings.”

Others are in it to see the world, he said.

“There are many people who like making connections in different communities, gaining experiences, life experiences from different places,” Choudhury said.

“In terms of culture, you can create a portfolio of diverse connections and experiences.”

For Dave Williams, an entrepreneur from Atlanta, it’s a little bit of both, he said.

RARE MOSAIC REVEALING EARLIEST ‘PHYSICAL EVIDENCE’ OF CHRISTIANITY NOW ON DISPLAY AT MUSEUM OF THE BIBLE

“It’s not so far to get here from the U.S., it’s a nice time zone, the weather’s great, and it’s very affordable,” Williams told Fox News Digital of living in Portugal.

Dave Williams and wife from Atlanta, Georgia now live in Portugal

Dave Williams, an entrepreneur from Atlanta, and his wife moved to Portugal in 2017, where they now run a business called NomadX. (Dave Williams)

“But it’s also about this concept of geo arbitrage, the idea being that you can take your wealth or your income and live in a country where it’s a lot less expensive. For example, health insurance policies may only cost like $1,000 a year, whereas in the U.S. it might be $1,000 a month. The cost of living is about half as much or less than half as much as the U.S.”

He and his wife moved to Portugal in 2017 and now run a business called NomadX, which works with local governments to build communities for remote workers while boosting economies.

Choudhury said that before the pandemic, there were just two countries, Estonia and Barbados, offering specific visas for remote workers.

TRAVELERS REFLECT ON VIRAL 9-MONTH-LONG WORLD CRUISE THAT TOOK OVER TIKTOK

Since the pandemic, that number has grown to more than 60, which Choudhury highlighted in an article for Harvard Business Review.

The Ambroz Valley program will award up to 200 digital nomad grants, which can be used for “available housing, arable land, and everything necessary to expedite their arrival,” according to the press release.

Candidates must first obtain Spain’s digital nomad visa and official residency before they can apply to the Live in Ambroz program. Applications will go live this month and can be submitted online through the Extremadura General Electronic Access Point.

A host of other countries, like Italy, Switzerland, Ireland and Chile, offer financial incentives for workers looking to make a global move and even start a company.

“Chile has had a program for more than a decade called Start-Up Chile,” Choudhury said.

Other nomad programs exist in various countries that have created “digital nomad villages.” (iStock)

“It was not announced as a digital nomad program because that is much more recent, but what Chile offered and still offers is a year, year-long visa for foreign entrepreneurs to come and start their companies there. Chile also offers $20,000 equity free capital to each of these foreign entrepreneurs.”

Choudhury noted Williams’ program in Madeira, Portugal, as one of the success stories.

“They’ve even created a digital nomad village,” Choudhury said.

“When we moved here to Portugal — or any time I went through a life transition or a move — it really helped me kind of innovate and break through to the next level,” Williams said.

“I think it’s easy to kind of be comfortable and stay in the same place and live where your work is or live where your family is. While the governments may not always be able to get along, it seems like the people generally are able to get along with each other and are very supportive. It really kind of gives you a lot of faith in humanity,” he added.
