Southwest Airlines to cut service and staffing in Atlanta to slash costs

Southwest Airlines is planning to reduce service to and from Atlanta next year, cutting more than 300 pilot and flight attendant positions, according to a company memo seen by CNBC.

The changes come a day before Southwest’s investor day, when executives will map out the company’s plan to cut costs and grow revenue as pressure mounts from activist investor Elliott Investment Management.

Southwest told staff it isn’t closing its crew base in Atlanta. Instead, it will reduce staffing by as many as 200 flight attendants and as many as 140 pilots, for the April 2025 bid month.

The airline also isn’t laying the crews off, but they will likely have to bid to work from other cities.

Southwest will reduce its Atlanta presence to 11 gates next year from 18, according to a separate memo from the pilots’ union.

It will service 21 cities from Atlanta starting next April, down from 37 in March, the carrier said.

“Although we try everything we can before making difficult decisions like this one, we simply cannot afford continued losses and must make this change to help restore our profitability,” Southwest said in its memo. “This decision in no way reflects our Employees’ performance, and we’re proud of the Hospitality and the efforts they have made and will continue to make with our Customers in ATL.”

The unions that represent Southwest’s pilot and flight attendants railed against the airline for the staffing and service cuts.

“Southwest Airlines management is failing Employees while impacting Customers. Management continues to make decisions that lack full transparency, sufficient communication with Union leadership, and most alarmingly, a lack of focus on what has made the airline great, the Employees,” said Bill Bernal, the flight attendants’ union president.

A Southwest spokesman confirmed the changes and said the carrier will “continue to optimize our network to meet customer demand, best utilize our fleet, and maximize revenue opportunities.”

The airline had already pulled out of certain airports, some of which it experimented with during the pandemic to focus on more profitable service.

Southwest is not only facing changing booking patterns and oversupplied parts of the U.S. market but aircraft delays from Boeing, whose yet-to-be-certified 737 Max 7 airplanes are years behind schedule

The airline’s COO, Andrew Watterson, told staff last week that it will have to make “difficult decisions” to boost profits.

The reduction in Atlanta, the world’s busiest airport and Delta Air Lines home hub, is the latest development for the airline. In July, Southwest announced it plans to get rid of open seating and offer extra legroom on its airplanes, the biggest changes in its more than half-century of flying.

Also on Wednesday, Southwest released an expanded schedule, selling tickets through June 4. In addition to the planned cuts in Atlanta, the carrier said it will boost service to and from Nashville, Tennessee. It will also start offering overnight flights from Hawaii, beginning April 8. Those include service from Honolulu to Las Vegas and Phoenix; Kona, Hawaii, to Las Vegas; and Maui, Hawaii, to Las Vegas and Phoenix.

Bottled water contains harmful contaminants, experts warn. Here are safer ways to hydrate.

0

One in 20 Americans gets most of their hydration from bottled water, and only 10% drink exclusively tap water — but experts are warning that it’s time to rethink our drinking habits. It’s for the good of our individual and planetary health, say the authors of a new commentary published in the journal BMJ Global Health on Tuesday. While bottled water is lifesaving in countries without access to clean well or municipal water, the authors say that the rest of us are unnecessarily exposing ourselves to toxins, using excess plastic and choosing a relatively unregulated source of water over highly tested tap water.

So what’s really in your bottled water? Here’s what to know.

High rates of contamination have been found in bottled water, according to the commentary written by Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar researchers. Just how common that is varies widely: Anywhere from 10% to 78% of samples of bottled water have been found to contain contaminants that may be harmful to human health. They include:

  • Microplastics: Popular brands of bottled water contain up to 100 times more nanoplastics — even tinier flecks of the material than microplastics — than previously thought, a monumental study found earlier this year. We now know that these plastic bits have made their way into many parts of our bodies, where they may trigger inflammation, metabolic changes, reproductive issues and Parkinson’s disease-related brain changes. And it’s not just drinking bottled water that exposes us to microplastics. “Nine out of 10 plastic bottles end up in the environment where they disintegrate into microplastics and nanoplastics that cause global pollution and adverse health effects on living organisms including humans,” Rolf Halden, director of Arizona State University’s Biodesign Center for Environmental Health Engineering, tells Yahoo Life.

  • Phthalates: These chemicals are used to make plastics more flexible and durable. They can be found in everything from cosmetic products to food, flooring and bottled water. Phthalates are known as “endocrine disruptors” because they interfere with the endocrine system, which regulates hormones. The chemicals have been linked to reproductive health issues, low IQ in children and metabolic changes.

  • PFAS: Best known as forever chemicals, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances are synthetics used to treat products including carpets and nonstick pans to make them heat-resistant. It can take hundreds or thousands of years for PFAS to break down in the environment and up to a decade for them to leave the human body. And while they’re already in our bodies, high levels of PFAS may contribute to higher cholesterol levels, liver enzyme changes, preeclampsia during pregnancy, low birth weights and greater testicular and kidney cancer risks. They may also contribute to obesity and metabolic issues.

  • BPA: Bisphenol A, or BPA, is a chemical used to make food packaging stronger and less vulnerable to corrosion or breaking down. But like phthalates, it disrupts hormones and has been linked to higher risks of infertility, PCOS, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and breast and prostate cancer. However, the Food and Drug Administration considers BPA levels in food packaging safe, and stated after a four-year review that safety standards don’t need to be changed.

Much of the concern over chemicals found in water bottles and food packaging is based on animal studies because it’s difficult to study in humans. “We do not know all the ramifications of chronic exposure to some of these chemicals, but certainly they are concerning,” Dr. Jamie Alan, associate professor of pharmacology and toxicology at Michigan State University, tells Yahoo Life.

She adds that we may begin to see the health effects in humans in the coming decade. “The degree of that harm or toxicity is yet to be determined,” Andrea De Vizcaya Ruiz, a professor of environmental and occupational health at the University of California, Irvine, tells Yahoo Life. “Whether it’s toxic or not toxic, we should not have [these chemicals in our bodies] because when we have something foreign to our bodies, that will constitute a health issue for sure.”

In much of the U.S. — and other wealthy nations — tap water is tightly regulated, frequently tested and “often exceeds [bottled water] in safety,” according to the authors of the new commentary. Yet they blame marketing for the fact that many people prefer bottled water and buy into its health halo. Alan agrees, saying: “Just look at the names of some of these brands of water. It’s a classic marketing strategy in my opinion.”

Halden says the notion that bottled water is better for you is “probably due to the misguided belief that ‘virgin water’ exists and can be found in plastic bottles,” he says. “There is no such thing as virgin water — all water on this planet constantly cycles between becoming contaminated and being purified.”

On the national level, the U.S. has among the cleanest, safest water supplies in the world, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But that isn’t perfectly consistent. De Vizcaya Ruiz notes that it’s not only reasonable but also safer to drink bottled water in parts of the country that have long been home to major industrial plants and may not have clean water. Case in point: The crisis in Flint, Mich., over high levels of lead in its water supply. (You can find out how safe your tap water is here.)

The commentary authors also pointed out that some bottled water brands enhance their products with flavors or carbonation, making them more appealing as a matter of taste. If that’s a reason why some people prefer bottled to tap water, “then the article’s assertion that many bottlers add flavoring seems to place these bottles in the same category as juice and soda” in some cases, James Salzman, a professor of environmental law at the University of California, Los Angeles and author of the book Drinking Water: A History, tells Yahoo Life. Salzman also wonders why the same plastic-related scrutiny isn’t applied to these other bottled beverages.

If you’re concerned about the possible health effects of bottled water, there’s good news: There are steps you can take to reduce your risks, even if you can’t or don’t want to give up bottled water altogether, says De Vizcaya Ruiz, whose research found microplastics from water bottles in human lungs and bloodstreams. Ranked from best to worst, her top choices for drinking water are:

  1. Tap water in a reusable glass or stainless steel bottle. As long as you live somewhere with safe drinking water, using these nonplastic containers will sidestep the risk of chemicals leaching from your bottle into your water (though, of course, that doesn’t mean there is zero in your drinking water). However, if you’re using a metal bottle, look for stainless steel (De Vizcaya Ruiz says Thermos brand is trustworthy) and avoid any that have been found to contain lead, including Stanley.

  2. Thicker plastic single-use water bottles. Have you ever noticed that little triangle with a number in the middle on your plastic water bottle? It’s not just for recycling; it also indicates the quality of the plastic. The lower the number, the better the plastic, and the fewer health effects it’s been linked to (and, bonus: the more easily it can be recycled).

  3. Clear plastic disposable bottles and jugs. In some cases, it’s unavoidable to use these poorer-quality plastics. De Vizcaya Ruiz says that using them occasionally isn’t likely to cause you much harm. Just make sure you only use them once because they degrade over time and get contaminated by germs with reuse, she says. And never put hot liquid in them or let them sit somewhere warm, like a hot car; heat damages the plastic, leading to more chemical leaching. And especially when it comes to emergency water bottles or jugs, remember that they have an expiration date because the plastic becomes less safe, so make sure to replace them every few months.

Trip.com Group Highlights Golden Week 2024 Travel Shifts: Chinese Tourists Explore Beyond Capitals and Lesser-Known Options

0
  • Mid to high-star hotels drive consumption
  • Chinese travellers are seeking destinations beyond key capitals with a focus on lesser-known destinations
  • Top outbound destinations are in APAC: Japan, Thailand, South Korea
  • European long-haul travel is up almost 30%, with multi-destination trips above the global average length of stay.

SHANGHAI, Sept. 25, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — As millions of Chinese travellers prepare for the upcoming Golden Week holiday in October, Trip.com Group’s latest data reveals notable travel flows for their last major travel period of 2024. Already, the Group is witnessing hotel bookings peak in arrivals on October 1st – the day the holiday commences – with the average length of stays over seven days, as workers can enjoy a 10-day break by taking just two days off. Total booking growth for stays has also grown year-on-year.

High-Quality, Mid-Tier Stays Thrive

When it comes to travel costs, the top outbound destinations (Japan, Thailand, South Korea, Malaysia, Vietnam, Singapore, the Philippines, Australia, the UK, and the USA) have all seen a significant drop in average air ticket prices (including taxes). Travellers increasingly seek high-quality, mid-tier accommodation types. However, in Europe, year-on-year growth of 5-star hotel bookings was almost three times higher than in Asia-Pacific.

Long-Haul Destinations on the Rise, Visa Applications Surge

A significant shift towards long-haul destinations can be seen this year, with Australia, the United States, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, France, and Spain topping the list of most sought-after long-haul destinations by Chinese travellers. Long-haul flights have seen an increase compared to pre-pandemic levels in 2019.

European destinations like the United Kingdom, Spain, Germany, and Italy are seeing significantly longer stays, surpassing 10 to 14 days.

Interestingly, in Europe, more than 30% choose multi-destination itineraries, reflecting a growing trend to maximise long-haul travel. Meanwhile, in Asia Pacific, nearly 80% of Chinese travellers opt for single-destination trips.

Additionally, travellers plan further in advance, with visa applications submitted an average of 68 days before the holiday—29 days earlier than last year. The top countries for National Day visa applications include Japan, South Korea, Australia, the United States, Vietnam, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, France, and Spain.

Lesser Known Destinations Spark Travel Flows in Europe and Asia

With overtourism as one of the challenges for key destinations around the world, Chinese travellers have increasingly been drawn to quieter, off-the-beaten-path locations this Golden Week. This is so particularly in the Asia-Pacific and Europe regions.

Japanese cities off the main circuit of TokyoOsakaKyoto, like Yokohama, Takayama and Ito, showed three-digit booking growth, underscoring this trend. Additionally, nature and wellness tourism saw a rise, with Phu Quoc Islands in Vietnam and the hot spring town of Higashiizu in Japan becoming popular for their scenic landscapes and wellness experiences.

European destinations such as Granada and Seville also captured significant attention, with a 260% and 144% rise in bookings, respectively, reflecting a desire for greater cultural and historical immersion beyond key capitals.

Concerts and Live Entertainment Fuel Tourism Charge

Live entertainment is playing a pivotal role in travel trends this season, with key concerts and events in the Asia-Pacific region happening during the October holiday. Moreover, over 75% of tourists visiting the APAC region are millennials, who have shown strong interest in events and concerts.

Around the holiday period, popular K-pop artists such as Taemin and Taeyang will captivate audiences in Hong Kong, alongside international acts such as John Legend and Ne-Yo. In Bangkok, girl group Aespa is a draw, while in South Korea, Busan’s Festival Shiwol blends entertainment, culture, and business in a massive event expected to draw 450,000 visitors.

In Singapore, hotels within 3km of concert venues have experienced a 214% increase in unique views compared to those farther away, as tourists seek proximity to venues such as Singapore Indoor Stadium, Gateway Theatre, and Capitol Theatre, where major concerts are scheduled.

Cross-border Surge in Inbound Tourism

The growth rate of inbound tourism has also been encouraging, with an increase in bookings. 9 out of 10 of the top outbound destinations were also the top inbound source markets, highlighting the two-way nature between outbound and inbound tourism for China.

This year, Thailand and Singapore, both offering mutual visa exemptions with China, ranked third and fifth respectively in inbound tourism.

Overlapping in part with Golden Week, Trip.com has also launched two tour routes for its Shanghai Express free layover tours initiative, enriching the travel experience for international passengers with transits of over 8 hours in Shanghai. It has launched a limited-time “Art & Culture Immersion Tour” from September 23 to October 6, an engaging journey through Shanghai’s cultural landmarks, including the Shanghai World Expo Museum, the Dunhuang exhibition in the China Art Museum and “Old Shanghai” Alley 1192. It has also upgraded the “Local Lifestyle City Walk Tour” with stops such as Wukang Road and Wuzhong Market. Since its launch earlier this year, the initiative has successfully served over 3,000 tourists. Find out more about Shanghai Express tours.

Arizona woman shares ‘unpopular airport opinions’ on TikTok: ‘Clearly triggered from flying today’

0

A woman recently took to TikTok to reveal what she called some “unpopular opinions” that are sometimes argued by travelers.

Keegan Acton, of Scottsdale, Arizona, shared the video message with her 65,000-plus followers — saying “going to the airport fills me with a type of rage.”

Her most unpopular opinion was that she doesn’t mind a crowded plane aisle after the aircraft lands.

“I always see TikToks of people being like, ‘My God, I can’t stand when people immediately stand up once the plane lands,’ [but] I think there’s nothing wrong with that,” she said in the video, which she captioned, “clearly triggered from flying today.”

She continued, “I don’t think there’s anything wrong with wanting to stand and stretch your legs. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with getting your stuff in the overhead bin and having it ready for when it’s like your turn to exit the plane.”

The content creator also said she believes travelers have more space in the window seat rather than the aisle seat.

“When I have a window seat, I feel like I can…  lean against the wall. There’s like a little gap there for me,” she explained, adding, “I just feel like I’m more space on the window side and I like a cool view and some entertainment watching the clouds.”

For travelers who enjoy sitting next to their significant other on a flight, Acton said she doesn’t think that’s necessary.

“I do not think that you need to sit next to your significant other on a plane. I feel like what I always see happens is… the husband has the aisle seat, and the wife has to sit in the middle,” she said.

She added, “I don’t think the wife needs to be uncomfortable on the flight [and] sit in the middle just to sit next to her husband.”

Acton also addressed how she felt about TSA rules and “rude” agents.

TSA line

Acton alleged that TSA agents have “yelled” when passengers weren’t following rules in security lines. (iStock)

“I didn’t know the rules. It’s different everywhere. Like, please don’t yell at me. I’m sensitive. I’m just a girl,” she said, adding that she has been yelled at while going through security.

Additionally, Acton blasted passengers who don’t put their carry-on luggage in the overhead bin correctly.

“You are an idiot if you cannot put your suitcase in the overhead bin the correct way,” she said.

Carry on luggage

Acton said she gets annoyed when people don’t properly put their carry-on luggage in the overhead bin. (iStock)

She added, “You’re supposed to put [it] on your side so it can make room for more people. It’s so inconsiderate.”

Acton even called out passengers who recline their seats once in the air.

“I think the people who lean their seat backs are a——-. I know that you have every single right to do that. I know your legs are probably long. It’s probably more comfortable,” she explained.

She continued, “It’s just kind of, like, inconsiderate to the person behind you.”

Deplaning an airplane

When it comes to deplaning, Acton said she doesn’t mind when passengers crowd the aisle, even though other travelers sometimes say they are bothered by this move.  (iStock)

Acton also said she gets frustrated with inconsistent security line timing, “anxiety inducing” boarding processes, space between gates and people who crowd the baggage claim area.

Rosalinda Randall, a California-based etiquette expert and trainer, told Fox News Digital via email that individuals refuse to “adhere to social norms” often.

Randall said that when it comes to the proper way to exit an airplane, passengers should wait to deplane until it’s their turn unless communicated otherwise to a flight attendant in advance.

“Unless you have a connecting flight, the job interview of a lifetime or are going to be late for your wedding, wait your turn,” she said.

The woman’s TikTok video shed light on “unpopular airport opinions.” A California-based etiquette expert weighed in on some of the strong thoughts.  (iStock)

If you are in a hurry, Tandall said, alert a flight attendant prior to landing of your urgency, politely explaining to others around you that you need to get up first and expect uncooperative passengers in the midst.

Randall also commented on whether it’s proper to recline the airplane seat while on a flight.

She said, “As paying passengers, we should be able to recline whenever we want. However, it becomes an issue when we enter someone else’s space.”

She recommended considering a few factors before pressing the recline button on your next flight.

Randall suggested people avoid reclining during meal times, reclining only half-way if the person behind you is working on a laptop or holding a child and seeking assistance if there becomes an issue with space among passengers.

What is a DAVI Can Opener?

The DAVI Can Opener is a can opener that uses a unique (patented) mechanism to fully open the lid of beverage cans with ease, allowing you to drink the beverage like from a glass. By using this product, users can directly taste the original rich aroma of the drink and the sharpness of the carbonation of the beverage, making it more enjoyable to drink.

Can openers for canned beverages have existed but have not been widely used due to issues with cut edges dangerous for the lips and lids falling into the drink. DAVI solves these problems with four unique strengths that existing products don’t have.

Unique Strengths of the DAVI Can Opener

Feature 1:Easy to use
Just place the Can Opener on the can and rotate it. It’s as simple as that.

Feature 2:Smooth and safe cutting
The special cutting method makes the cut surface safe and smooth.

Feature 3:Hygienic as the lid does not fall inside
The cut lid is hygienic and doesn’t fall into the drink.
(With other companies’ products, the lids often fall into the can and need to be fished out of the drink.)

Feature 4:Sophisticated Design
The luxurious and sophisticated design makes it an ideal gift for family, friends and loved ones.
