Here’s what the Boeing strike might mean for flyers

Boeing workers went on strike Friday, the latest disturbance in what has proven a devastating year for the American aircraft manufacturer.

But it is not clear whether the labor stoppage will have an impact for the flying public, although there are concerns about a potential effect on air travel next summer.

U.S. carriers that rely heavily on Boeing planes include Southwest, United and Alaska Airlines.

In a statement, Southwest said its operations were unlikely to be affected in the short-term by any production delays Boeing may end up suffering.

“Earlier this year, Southwest Airlines took steps to address potential delivery disruptions,” the carrier said. “As a result, we currently have the fleet needed to fulfill our upcoming schedules. We remain in close communication with Boeing.”

Southwest exclusively uses Boeing 737s — planes made made in Renton, Washington, one of the sites now on strike by members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers. Southwest had sharply brought down its delivery target for Boeing aircraft earlier this year.

A United spokesperson said the carrier was working with Boeing to understand what the impact to the airline’s delivery schedule might be.

A spokesperson for Alaska Airlines did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Airlines are in charge of maintaining aircraft once they come into possession of them, and crews won’t sign off on allowing a plane to fly if it is deemed not airworthy, said Henry Harteveldt, founder and president of Atmosphere Research Group, an airline industry consultancy.

“There will probably be very little direct impact on consumers as a result of the Boeing strike,” Harteveldt told NBC News.

Estimates of how long the strike could last vary widely. The previous Boeing machinists strike, in 2008, lasted nearly two months; however, in a note to clients, Bank of America analyst Ronald Epstein said the latest one could prove as short as a week.

That’s in part because Boeing is in an especially weak position, he noted: Its standing has been seriously hurt in the wake of the mid-air door-panel blowout in January that prompted a nationwide grounding, federal investigations, and ultimately the ouster of Boeing’s leadership. The FAA continues to have federal monitors of Boeing’s production in place. The company’s stock, which is a component of the blue chip Dow Jones Industrial Average, is down about 40% this year.

Newly installed CEO Kelly Ortberg already took a conciliatory tone with Boeing workers in the run-up to the strike, Epstein said.

“We see it likely Boeing would have to make further concessions and move closer to the IAM’s initial proposal,” Epstein wrote.

In a statement, Boeing acknowledged that members of the International Association of Machinists had deemed its offer “not acceptable.”

“We remain committed to resetting our relationship with our employees and the union, and we are ready to get back to the table to reach a new agreement.”

Company executives have warned that the strike could “jeopardize” its recovery from recent scandals and quality problems.

A White House official said the Biden Administration is in touch with Boeing and the machinists.

“We encourage them to negotiate in good faith — toward an agreement that gives employees the benefits they deserve and makes the company stronger,” the official said.

The strike was largely expected, despite a push by union leaders to broker a last-minute deal. Rank-and-file members of the 33,000-strong workforce that constitute the striking group have said recent layoffs, a decision to shift some production to Boeing’s non-union facility in South Carolina, and a push for even stronger compensation and protections had all pushed workers toward striking. Boeing had promised to build its next commercial airplane in the Seattle area under the tentative agreement.

Boeing appeared to have already made contingency plans in the run-up to the strike vote: Reuters reported on Tuesday that the company told suppliers it was delaying a key production milestone for its 737 MAX by six months.

Should the strike drag on, major carriers may not be able to meet capacity demands for next year’s summer travel season, Harteveldt said.

“If this strike drags out, depending on how many aircraft can [Boeing} can deliver, airlines may find themselves with far fewer new planes by next summer’s season, which is peak season — and that could definitely impact the number of flights and destinations available,” he said.

MediLink presents YL201 (B7H3 ADC) at ESMO 2024, with over 6-months PFS in SCLC, and showing pan-tumor benefits

0
  • The first publication of clinical data for YL201, featured in an oral presentation at ESMO 2024.
  • Encouraging antitumor activity of YL201 in multiple solid tumor types, including SCLC, NPC, and wild-type NSCLC, from Phase I escalation and expansion results.
  • In extensive-stage SCLC patients, ORR was 68.1% and mPFS was 6.2 months.

SUZHOU, China, Sept. 14, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — MediLink Therapeutics (MediLink) today presented clinical data for YL201, a novel B7H3-targeting antibody drug conjugate (ADC) developed based on MediLink’s Tumor Microenvironment Activable LINker-payload (TMALIN®) platform, at the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) Congress. This is the first disclosure of clinical data for YL201 featured in an oral presentation.

Presented results are from phase I studies (NCT05434234 & NCT06057922) conducted in China and the US to explore the safety and efficacy of YL201 in patients with advanced solid tumors. As shown in the abstract, by August 9 2024, a total of 312 patients were enrolled in the dose escalation and expansion studies with various tumor types, including small cell lung cancer (SCLC, n=79), nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC, n=75), and non-small cell lung cancer without actionable genomic alterations (NSCLC without AGAs, n=68). All enrolled patients have been treated with prior standard therapy, and 60% had at least 2 prior treatment lines.

During dose escalation stage, dose limiting toxicities were observed at 2.8 mg/kg (n=1) and 3.0 mg/kg (n=2).  For dose expansion, 2.0 mg/kg and 2.4 mg/kg were selected as recommended expansion doses. As of 09 Aug 2024, 276 patients had at least one post-baseline tumor assessment per RECIST V1.1., The overall response rate (ORR) was 44.6%, the disease control rate (DCR) was 83.7%. The median follow-up duration was 5.4 months, and 46% of the patients are still on treatment.

Antitumor activity was observed in multiple solid tumor types. In extensive-stage SCLC patients, among 72 patients who had evaluable tumor assessment, all patients had prior treatment with platinum-based chemotherapy, and 95% had prior treatment with anti-PD-(L)1. The ORR was 68.1% (at dose levels >= 2.0 mg/kg: 70.0%) and the median progress-free survival (mPFS) was 6.2 months (at dose levels >= 2.0 mg/kg: 6.2 months). Also worth mentioning was that in patients with brain metastasis, the ORR was 52.2% and mPFS was 5.3 months, comparable to those of overall population.

In 70 NPC patients with evaluable tumor assessment, the ORR was 48.6% (at dose levels >= 2.0 mg/kg: 48.6%), and mPFS was 7.2 months (at dose levels >= 2.0 mg/kg: 7.2 months). In heavily-treated NPC patients receiving at least 2 prior lines of treatment, the efficacy was also comparable, with ORR of 51.0% and mPFS of 7.0 months.

In NSCLC without AGA, all patients had prior treatment with anti-PD-(L)1 and platinum-based chemotherapy. In the histological subtypes of adenocarcinoma and LELC, ORR were 29.2% and 60.9%, respectively, and mPFS were unmatured and 8.1 months, respectively.

In terms of safety, the grade 3 and higher treatment-related TEAEs (TRAEs) occurred in 51% of the patients, and serious TRAEs occurred in 28%. The most common TRAE were leukopenia (G≥3 29%), anemia (G≥3 22%) and neutropenia (G≥3 30%), while decreased appetite (G≥3 1%) and nausea (G≥3 1%) were the most common non-hematological TRAEs. Only 3 (1%) were reported as treatment related interstitial lung disease.

“We are excited to share the results of YL201 at the ESMO Congress,” said Dr. Steve Chin, Chief Medical Officer of MediLink. “Clinical data accumulated from a sample size of over 300 patients has solidly demonstrated the antitumor activity of YL201 in multiple solid tumor types, especially in SCLC, NPC, and NSCLC without AGA. Significant improvement was shown in these population compared to historical data of existing standard treatment regimens. Also, YL201 is well tolerated with the most common TRAEs being hematological toxicities, which are deemed to be manageable. We were actively preparing Phase 3 studies of YL201 in SCLC, NPC, etc.”

Jon Bon Jovi is praised for talking woman off the ledge of a bridge. Mental health experts say it’s well deserved.

0

Jon Bon Jovi is receiving praise for appearing to talk someone off the ledge of a bridge in Nashville on Tuesday. Mental health experts say that praise is well deserved.

A video shared by the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department shows the 62-year-old rock star approaching a woman in distress while standing on the outside of the guardrail of the John Seigenthaler Pedestrian Bridge where he was filming a music video. He went over to the woman with a member of his team and engaged in conversation. Less than a minute later, he helped to bring her back to safety on the other side of the railing.

Nashville Police Chief John Drake expressed his gratitude, writing in the post, “It takes all of us to help keep each other safe.” Mental health experts are endorsing that sentiment.

“It is everybody’s job to save a life,” Julie Goldstein Grumet, director of Zero Suicide Institution, tells Yahoo Life of Bon Jovi’s actions. She says the bigger lesson is that “you don’t have to be a rock star and you don’t have to be an expert in suicide prevention or mental health” to help. “Anybody, anywhere, anytime can be empathic, can say to somebody, ‘Your life matters. I’m listening. I’m here.’”

The message is particularly poignant during September, which is Suicide Prevention Month, and amid a mental health crisis that people everywhere are struggling to navigate.

“This is an opportunity to cover the public health issue of mental health struggles and suicide, which is a leading cause of death, but a potentially preventable and addressable type of struggle,” Dr. Christine Yu Moutier, chief medical officer at American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), tells Yahoo Life. She says supportive conversations and check-ins should be happening on a more regular basis at home, at school and in the workplace when a person might be struggling and having thoughts of taking their life, but before they take action to do so.

“We are in a position to notice if somebody’s struggling in any way,” says Moutier. “And we have guides for people about how to pick up on those warning signs and how to approach them.”

Most important, this particular story is one of hope, says Grumet, as Bon Jovi helped to get the woman to safety. “It’s a really good message that we can intervene along that continuum of somebody’s thoughts to their actual attempt, right up until the last minute,” she says. “The big picture is that all human beings struggle. And so covering a story where an individual is clearly struggling and where someone else takes action to help, that’s a very positive message.”

And while the details of what exactly the singer said during his intervention are unknown, Grumet says, “It looked to me like really he did everything right.” Now other people can learn from it.

If you find yourself a bystander to an individual in crisis, the first thing you can do is call for help. Reaching out to 911 is always a good option, although experts recommend dialing 988 for the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.

“In many communities, they would send a mobile crisis team with clinicians who are skilled and would see this as something they’re willing to do and they’ve had training to engage people,” Dr. Ken Duckworth, chief medical officer at National Alliance on Mental Illness, tells Yahoo Life.

A trained professional from the lifeline will remain on the phone to provide additional support and help figure out next steps, including how to approach the person in distress or what to say. But you don’t have to be a professional to intervene more directly.

“Everyone can and should play a role in preventing suicide,” says Moutier, explaining that interpersonal connectedness is known to reduce suicide risk. “Speaking and words can absolutely make a difference.” It’s crucial to remain calm and compassionate throughout the process, as Bon Jovi appeared to be.

The AFSP has “Real Convos” guides that provide tips and specific talking points for somebody in this situation. Demonstrating that you’re listening, affirming their feelings and following their lead are important.

“People have that skill, they just don’t know it and they haven’t always put it to the test in something as drastic as this,” says Grumet. “But just connecting and saying to somebody, ‘I’m here, I’m with you, you’re not alone, your life matters,’ those are very salient things that a person in that level of crisis just needs to hear.”

Duckworth, however, says it’s also important to consider your own mental capacity. “I just want to give permission for the average person not to feel that they have to run towards this,” he says, noting that it could be more triggering or traumatizing for a specific individual and that a life can be saved by calling emergency services and staying nearby for additional support.

It’s also possible to experience secondary trauma after the event. “It can certainly be an intense experience,” says Moutier. “It’s a moment to take care of your mental health in whatever way that person knows how to do.”

Duckworth recommends contacting the AFSP, the NAMI or a personal physician for additional support.

If you are in crisis, please call, text or chat with the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 988, or contact the Crisis Text Line by texting TALK to 741741.

Travel experts reveal best time to fly before a cruise and why

0

Experienced cruisers likely know how to snag deals, pack with ease and make the most of their time in ports of call.

If you’re new to booking a cruise vacation, it’s worth noting that it could be risky to fly the same day as your cruise departs.

Here’s what travel experts have to say about when you should fly before a cruise and why.

FLORIDA WOMAN HAS TRAVELED TO 55 COUNTRIES, SAYS CRUISE SHIP VACATIONS ARE THE WAY TO GO

Canceled or delayed flights could cause you to miss a cruise departure

flights cancelled

One easy way to make sure you arrive on time at your planned destination is to actually fly early in hopes of avoiding any flight cancelations that are close to your take-off from your port city. (iStock)

If you are taking an early flight to Miami hoping to board a cruise that day, in many cases it could go smoothly, but be aware that things could go awry without much notice.

Weather, computer glitches, aircraft maintenance issues and even crew matters could all contribute to delayed and canceled flights.

Experts say it’s a better plan to fly the night before a cruise at the very least, but one to two days is ideal to avoid possible travel woes.

MAN TRAVELS THE WORLD ON A CRUISE SHIP FOR FREE AFTER QUITTING HIS DAY JOB: ‘HAVE LEARNED SO MUCH’

“We always, always recommend flying in at least one day early for a cruise – two, if flying internationally,” Chris Gray Faust, a spokesperson with Cruise Critic, who is based in Yardley, Pennsylvania, told Fox News Digital.

passenger misses flight upset

You want to leave yourself plenty of time to grab your luggage and a ride before arriving at your cruise’s port location. (iStock)

“The most obvious reason to fly in early is simply to avoid the possibility of not making it to your ship on time, due to airline delays or cancellations, which happen all the time.”

In addition, same-day flights could also cause luggage headaches.

If your luggage goes missing, you’ll be in trouble if your ship is leaving within a few hours.

You’re in a vacation state of mind

For same-day travelers, worrying about delayed or canceled flights can put a damper on your vacation mindset, Gray Faust said.

“Aside from protecting the logistics of arriving to your cruise, coming in early brings you more peace of mind while you’re traveling,” she added.

WARM WEATHER WEAR YOU SHOULD HAVE ON YOUR NEXT CRUISE

“Airline issues are never fun, but everything becomes more frantic when you have a ship departure to make.”

You can explore your cruise’s embarkation port city

Cruise travelers might decide against exploring the city where they board a ship.

This could create a missed opportunity.

“A benefit of going into a port city one or two days early is the opportunity to explore or get to know the port city better,” Kelly Connor, a travel adviser with AAA Club Alliance in Marlton, New Jersey, told Fox News Digital.

AMID SURGING CRUISE SHIP ILLNESSES, EXPERTS SHARE WAYS TO STAY SAFE ON THE HIGH SEAS

There are many domestic ports that definitely warrant at least two pre-nights before a cruise, she said.

visiting the city of New Orleans

New Orleans is a city you will want to explore while you wait for your cruise ship to leave the city’s port. (iStock)

For instance, New Orleans is a popular bucket-list city to visit, and many cruise lines sail out of that port city.

“The city offers fabulous food, wonderful beignets, great music and, of course, the fabulous partying and people-watching along Bourbon Street. It has a southern flavor all its own,” Connor said.

There are also several interesting West Coast cruise ports in California that definitely offer great pre-cruise experiences, including San Diego, San Francisco and Los Angeles.

“Cruise lines departing from these ports include Holland America, Disney, Celebrity and Norwegian, among others,” Connor added.

15 TRAVEL ESSENTIALS YOU NEED FOR YOUR FIRST CRUISE

“Rather than hurrying through the airport, rushing to secure transportation, or zipping to the cruise port right off the plane, arriving early allows you the chance to have a more leisurely experience so the day of boarding is more relaxed and enjoyable,” Gray Faust said.

You can prevent jet lag

If you’re traveling internationally, arriving at least a day or two before your cruise also helps to combat jet lag, Connor said.

“By having a slow day or two before you board, you’ll be able to do so much more on your cruise, since your body has more of a chance to adjust to any time differences,” she added.

While taking a recent cruise from Budapest, Hungary, Gray Faust flew in early and booked a day at a local thermal bath in the city, she said.

“Beyond being an incredible experience, it’s also known to be a fantastic remedy for jet lag,” she continued.

“It was the perfect adjustment ahead of my sailing and meant that I was able to enjoy my first ship excursion rather than yawning the whole time.”
