Floss before brushing, eat prunes and 7 more tips to upgrade your health this week

0

Hello, Yahoo Life readers! My name is Kaitlin, and I’m delivering the best wellness tips around the internet.

August is on its way out, and fall is right around the corner — if the arrival of Starbucks’ Pumpkin Spice Latte is any indication. (Just remember not to go overboard on the caffeine … it is an espresso-based drink, after all.) If the end of summer means “back to school” for you and your little ones, read up on these expert parenting tips that can help you navigate the start of the academic year.

Take a peek at the weather in your area and, if you’re looking to the stars for guidance, your horoscope. Then check out these tips below for a healthy week ahead.

🦷 Get your dental routine in order

You may be proud to tell your dentist that you’re both flossing and brushing your teeth regularly, are you doing it in the right order? Flossing before brushing helps dislodge gunk from your teeth before you brush it away, reducing bad breath and potential gum disease.

No matter what you do first, dental hygiene is important — and not just to protect your pearly whites. Good oral health is also linked to a reduced risk of heart disease, diabetes and other serious health conditions.

🧦 Pack this for your next flight

You have your eye mask and noise-canceling headphones — but do you really need compression socks for your long flight? It’s a good idea to wear them, according to experts. Dr. Leo Reap, a hematologist at Ascension Michigan, told Health that “blood flow can become sluggish in the veins, pooling in the lower legs” on a flight — particularly those that last more than four hours — which can increase your risk of clots. Compression socks gently squeeze the legs, which helps maintain blood flow and reduces the risk of swelling and clot formation.

Other things you can do to reduce your risk of a blood clot includes getting up and moving on the plane, even if it’s just a quick stretch in the aisle. Staying hydrated can also reduce your risk, so bring a water bottle and sip regularly. (Have to get up and hit the bathroom? Great, you’re moving more already!)

😋 Snack on prunes

Thanks to their high dose of fiber, prunes are ideal for getting things moving in your GI tract, but that’s not the only reason to snack on them. Prunes contain loads of antioxidants, which can lower your risk of chronic issues such as heart disease, and they may actually protect your bone health due to their phenolic compounds, vitamin K and potassium content.

You don’t have to eat them whole to enjoy this fruit: Try chopping them up into your salad or oatmeal, or blend them into your smoothie for a natural dose of sweetness.

🏃 Join a run club — you might find love

Run clubs are all the rage right now, and they’re great for training for marathons or improving your overall fitness level. However, if you’re single, there’s one more reason to get into it: Theresa DiDonato, an associate professor of psychology at Loyola University Maryland, previously told Women’s Health that you’re more likely to find a love connection with people who validate your interests. Maybe that running buddy will become something more?

🦘 Add bursts of energy to your nighttime routine

Winding down is important in the evening, but a new study in BMJ Open Sport & Exercise Medicine has found that doing short bursts of exercise can actually help you sleep better. Researchers had participants break up four hours of sedentary TV-watching with three-minute intervals of body weight exercises every 30 minutes, which resulted in participants sleeping nearly 30 minutes longer that night than those who didn’t get up and move. Though the study was small, the researchers believe that this benefit could be linked to improved blood sugar regulation. Consider sneaking in some squats while you’re glued to those NFL games this season.

🍕 Avoid that leftover pizza (sorry!)

Didn’t clean up after your pizza party and want to grab a slice for breakfast? Don’t, experts warn Yahoo Life — that pizza’s been in the “danger zone” (between 40°F and 140°F, where bacteria can rapidly multiply, increasing the risk of foodborne illness) for too long. In the future, put leftovers away within two hours, and try wrapping your slices individually in plastic wrap or aluminum foil. Doing so will keep your pizza from taking on any tastes from your fridge (gross) and also help you avoid possible food poisoning.

🧘 Focus on flexibility

New research published in the Scandinavian Journal of Medicine & Science in Sports suggests that flexibility may be tied to longevity. If you’re feeling a bit stiff, you can work on your flexibility in a few ways. One easy thing to incorporate into your routine? Foam rolling — it releases tight muscles and fascia, which increases range of motion and reduces stiffness. You can also sign up (or look online for) Pilates or tai chi classes, both of which are practices that help you maintain and improve your flexibility.

If you want something you can do right now, try this doorway stretch: Stand in a doorway with your arms bent at 90 degrees, place your forearms on the doorframe and step forward. Lean in until you feel a stretch in your chest and shoulders, hold for 30 seconds, then step back. Repeat as needed.

🎮 Play video games for your mental health

Is it time to dig out the PlayStation? A Japanese study published in Nature Human Behaviour found that playing video games for a couple of hours a day improved mental health by reducing psychological distress and increasing life satisfaction. However, these positive effects went away when individuals played for more than three hours a day.

Since this study was done during the pandemic, it’s possible that the results would have been different under other circumstances, the researchers noted. But if you’re already a gamer, it’s a great excuse to play — just keep it to under three hours in order to reap the most rewards.

🐟 Have some fish with your veggies

Eating fish and vegetables might be your best option for reducing the risk of death, especially in very old individuals, according to a study from Loma Linda University. The researchers found that participants on a pesco-vegetarian diet had an 18% lower risk of death compared with non-vegetarians. And while there are health benefits to having a strict vegetarian diet in middle age, in old age living off veggies alone is associated with a slightly higher risk of neurological conditions. Adding fish, researchers found, offers “small but significant advantage.”

Want to try a pesco-vegetarian diet out for yourself? You can start simple by adding more tinned fish into your diet in place of other meat. These fish have a lot of nutritional benefits such as calcium, which can help protect your bones, and omega-3s, which are great for your brain. They’re also shelf-stable and less expensive than the fresh versions, making them easy to incorporate into your meals, be it a Caesar salad or pasta dish topped with anchovies.

The IRS has a method of ‘last resort’ to collect overdue taxes: Revoking your passport

0

Travelers, be warned: The federal government may revoke your passport if you ignore a big tax bill.

Such punishments have become more frequent in recent years, experts said.

Federal law requires the IRS and Treasury Department to notify the State Department if an American has a “seriously delinquent tax debt.”

This is a large federal debt — of more than $62,000 in 2024 — that the taxpayer has repeatedly ignored.

The debt threshold includes aggregate total federal tax liabilities, plus penalties and interest, levied against an individual. It’s adjusted annually for inflation.

The State Department generally won’t issue a new passport and may revoke or limit an existing one in cases of serious delinquency, according to the IRS.

IRS has collected more than $1 billion in tax debt from high-income individuals

The government typically uses this enforcement mechanism — which has been in place since 2018 — as a sort of last-ditch effort to collect unpaid tax levies, experts said.

Should those debts remain unpaid, the potential consequences are ample: Travelers might not be able to take trips overseas until they’ve resolved their debt. Expats and those who travel abroad for business may have to return to U.S. soil indefinitely until their tax case concludes, for example, experts said.

Revoking a passport is “a step of last resort,” said Troy Lewis, a certified public accountant based in Draper, Utah, and an accounting and tax professor at Brigham Young University.

“How do you get rich folks’ attention regarding paying their taxes? Just make sure they can’t summer in Europe,” he said.

‘It gets people to call the IRS’

Demand to travel abroad has surged as the Covid-19 pandemic has waned. Americans applied for about 21.6 million U.S. passports in fiscal 2023 — a record number, according to the State Department.

Todd Whalen, a CPA based in Denver, has seen tax enforcement efforts involving passports ramp up over the past three years.

“This is becoming more and more of a big deal,” said Whalen, founder of Advanced Tax Solutions, which helps consumers and businesses resolve tax debts. “We’ve gotten several [cases] this year.”

In one instance, a client only found out his passport had been revoked while at the airport trying to fly to Mexico for a trip to celebrate his son’s high school graduation.

“It works,” Whalen said of the collection effort. “It gets people to call [the IRS].”

A State Department spokesperson declined to provide annual statistics on how many taxpayers had their passports revoked or denied. The IRS didn’t comment by press time.

All other collections must have been ‘exhausted’

J. David Ake | Getty Images News | Getty Images

It can be “quite easy” for overdue tax debts to exceed the $62,000 threshold, according to Virginia La Torre Jeker, an attorney who specializes in U.S. international tax law.

Americans living abroad, for example, may have “significant penalties” for not filing various foreign information returns, she said in an email.

Debts can also include any tax levies owed by individuals, she added. Those may be business taxes for which the taxpayer is personally liable or trust fund recovery penalties, she said. (The latter relate to withheld income and employment taxes like Social Security taxes or railroad retirement taxes.)

How do you get rich folks’ attention regarding paying their taxes? Just make sure they can’t summer in Europe.

Troy Lewis

accounting and tax professor at Brigham Young University

However, revoking a passport isn’t generally the government’s first way to collect such overdue debts, experts said.

The IRS must have already “exhausted” all other typical collection activities, said Lewis, owner of Lewis & Associates, CPAs.

Generally, that would mean the taxpayer hasn’t responded to prior IRS notices of a federal tax lien, for example. (A lien is the government’s legal claim to a debtor’s assets like real estate and other personal property. It isn’t a move to collect said property, though.)

Various courts have upheld the federal government’s ability to revoke passports in order to collect tax debts as constitutional, Lewis said.

He pointed to two recent cases as examples: Franklin v. United States in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit and Maehr v. United States Department of State in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 10th Circuit.

In the former, the defendant, James Franklin, owed about $422,000 in taxes for failing to file accurate tax returns and report a foreign trust of which he was the beneficial owner. The IRS ultimately filed a tax lien and levied his Social Security benefits, and the State Department later revoked his passport.

“It seems pretty well established this is something [the government] can do,” Lewis said.

Travelers have remedies available

The State Department doesn’t revoke a passport straight away. When the IRS certifies debt as seriously delinquent and alerts the State Department of that, it will mail the taxpayer a notice — CP508C — outlining the potential implications of that classification.

If an individual then applies for a passport, the State Department would generally deny and close that application if the person doesn’t make efforts to pay their debts. Such efforts might include paying the balance in full, entering into a payment plan or making a compromise agreement with the IRS.

The debtor would still be able to use an active passport, if they have one, unless notified in writing by the State Department that their passport had been revoked or limited, the IRS said.

Travelers are finally cracking under the pressure of high costs

“IRS looks at various factors, including taxpayer noncompliance in the past and taxpayer failure to cooperate with the IRS” when opting to revoke a passport, according to La Torre Jeker.

The State Department can limit the passport’s use only to return travel to the U.S., thereby preventing the person “from being trapped in limbo” if outside the country, she said.

The IRS sends taxpayers Letter 6152 before revocation, asking them to call the IRS within 30 days in order to resolve their account and avoid passport cancellation, she added.

Still, sometimes passport denial catches debtors by surprise when they travel, said Whalen at Advanced Tax Solutions.

For example, the IRS may have the wrong address on file — especially if a taxpayer has moved — and mail notices to the wrong place, Whalen said.

“A lot of times, they don’t know they have a balance due until they … show up at the airport,” he said.

Shoppers in their 60s and 70s say their secret to looking younger is this $7 collagen cream

0

We love anti-aging treatments, but it seems like you have to use multiple products to address different skin issues. Some work to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, while others help smooth and firm sagging skin or keep it hydrated and glowing. Ready to streamline your beauty routine? While you can continue to shell out hundreds of dollars for a slew of serums and creams, thousands of skin-care fans say you need only one: L’Oreal Collagen Moisturizer, on sale for just $7, down from $11 — that’s nearly 40% off.

Amazon

More than 44,000 shoppers say this collagen cream is amazing for reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

$7 at Amazon

Why is it a good deal? 💰

At $7, this super-highly rated collagen moisturizer from L’Oreal is an incredible bargain — this is the lowest price we’ve seen for this fan favorite all year. With this formula, you’re getting an intensive skin treatment to moisturize skin and smooth wrinkles and fine lines.

Why do I need this? 🤔

L’Oreal Collagen Daily Face Moisturizer is packed with powerful ingredients like collagen, shea butter and glycerin, which work together to hydrate, smooth and firm skin. The moisturizer won’t clog pores and is dermatologist-tested and safe to use on sensitive or allergy-prone skin — this version is even fragrance-free, so all you’re getting is the powerful formula and none of the extras.

This hearty face cream helps restore the skin’s “cushion” overnight. In a consumer study, shoppers said their skin looked smoother after just one week. And they felt their fine lines and wrinkles were less noticeable after just four weeks.

What reviewers say 💬

Multitudes of Amazon shoppers are fans of the fast-acting collagen cream, with many of the 45,000-plus five-star reviewers highlighting how it brightens and moisturizes their skin.

Pros 👍

“This moisturizer absorbs well and makes my skin feel young and healthy,” said one nearly 60-year-old shopper.

“Being 70 and a product person, I have tried every moisturizer on my face on the market. … This L’Oreal product has been by far the game-changer,” raved a smitten buyer. “It keeps my face moisturized all day and night, isn’t heavy, not sticky. It is perfect under foundation or alone. I absolutely love it and won’t be wasting money on any others.”

Even octogenarians have sung its praises: “I have used this moisturizer for what seems like forever. I’m now in my mid-80s, and people who don’t know me think I’m in my late 60s or early 70s. They always ask me what my secret is, and I tell them about this moisturizer.”

And if these glowing reviews still haven’t convinced you, another shopper says it’s so effective, that they called it their “holy grail.”

Cons 👎

Some shoppers have singled out a particular feature as a drawback. “It is very thick and heavy, so I only use it every other day,” said one. Another user added, “It is exceptionally thick and a bit greasy when first applied, but sinks into the skin nicely.”

Your mileage may vary on how it affects your skin: “I do not see help with fine lines; however, my skin is nice and dewy-moisturized,” said a fair-minded shopper.

“Really good moisturizer if you have dry skin. I have oily skin, so it made me break out,” said a final reviewer.

Amazon

Even shoppers in their 80s say people think they’re way younger than they are, thanks to this cream.

‘Top Thrill 2’ roller coaster at Cedar Point will not reopen this season

0

Top Thrill 2, the long-awaited re-imagining of Cedar Point’s Top Thrill Dragster roller coaster, will not reopen this operating season, the Sandusky, Ohio-based park announced on August 23.

In the statement, Cedar Point said that work was ongoing to modify the ride’s vehicles, and laid most of the blame on the ride’s manufacturer, Zamperla.

Zamperla, an Italian-based manufacturer, was announced as the manufacturer of Top Thrill 2 in 2023. Top Thrill Dragster, the original coaster, was manufactured by Intamin.

‘TOP THRILL 2’ ROLLER COASTER AT CEDAR POINT CLOSES INDEFINITELY JUST DAYS AFTER LONG-AWAITED OPENING

“We sincerely appreciate your patience while Top Thrill 2’s manufacturer, Zamperla, has been working diligently to complete a mechanical modification to the coaster vehicles,” Cedar Point said in a statement posted to its social media platforms and website.

“Unfortunately, the manufacturer will not be able to complete the modifications needed in time to reopen the coaster in 2024,” they said.

Top Thrill 2 will not reopen during the 2024 season, Cedar Point announced on August 23. The ride was open for just days before it was closed for an “extended closure.”  (Artist concept rendering. Courtesy of Cedar Point.)

“We are extremely disappointed that we cannot open the ride this season, but remain committed to delivering a reliable, consistent and unparalleled coaster experience for our guests in 2025,” said Cedar Point, adding a “sincere apology.”

Cedar Point is open daily until Labor Day, and then operates during select weekends until November 2.

Top Thrill 2 opened on May 4, 2024, following several days of previews prior to its official opening. Just over a week later, the park announced that the ride would have an “extended closure” due to an issue with the ride’s vehicles.

Since its closure, the X account @TopThrillStatus has been documenting the work that has been done on the coaster, including the testing of the modified trains.

“If you didn’t catch it, [Top Thrill 2] was testing again last night. This increase in testing is exactly what I’d hope to see, as the more it tests, the closer to an opening we are,” said @TopThrillStatus on August 22.

Top Thrill 2 was described by Cedar Point as “the world’s tallest and fastest triple-launch strata roller coaster.”

A “strata roller coaster” refers to any roller coaster over 400 feet tall. Top Thrill 2’s predecessor, Top Thrill Dragster, was the first-ever “strata” coaster.

Top Thrill Dragster, which previously held the record for tallest roller coaster, closed permanently after a 2021 incident in which a woman was struck by a “small metal object” that had come off the ride. In 2022, Cedar Point announced that the ride would be “re-imagined.”

The park constructed a 420-foot “spike” behind Top Thrill Dragster’s original 420-foot “top hat” feature.

Prior to its sudden closure, Top Thrill 2 received rave reviews from roller coaster enthusiasts.

Taylor Bybee and Sarah Anderson, the two Virginia-based roller coaster enthusiasts behind the popular YouTube channel “Coaster Studios,” were able to ride Top Thrill 2 on its opening day.

In a May email to Fox News Digital, Bybee and Anderson said they had “an amazing experience with Top Thrill 2,” noting that they “at no time felt unsafe.”

Self-described “Coaster enthusiast” Andrew Lineweaver posted on X calling Top Thrill 2’s opening “probably the worst debut season we’ve ever seen from a coaster that’s opened with riders, even worse than the OG Top Thrill Dragster.”

Lineweaver continued, adding “I’m still so thankful to have gotten 2 rides because the ride experience is PHENOMENAL. Excited to get many more rides next year!”

The best exercise mat for 2024, tested and approved by a personal trainer

0

Ready to break a sweat? Whether you’re nailing that downward dog or powering through a HIIT session, using an exercise mat can make the difference between a successful workout and one that causes some discomfort. The best exercise mat provides support, stability, slip-resistance and cushioning for your joints while providing a solid foundation for your workout.

  • Best overall exercise mat

  • More exercise mats we like for 2024

  • Factors to consider when buying an exercise mat

  • How we chose

  • FAQs

  • Other exercise mats we tested

  • Meet our experts

With so many options out there, choosing the perfect exercise mat can feel overwhelming. That’s why we’ve done the heavy lifting for you. As a personal trainer with extensive experience using a variety of mats over the course of my career, I personally tested 11 of the newest and most popular models to see how they held up during low-impact cardio and strength-training sessions. I performed exercises, including squats, lunges, planks and sit-ups, on each mat and I used weight equipment and bodyweight exercises (including stretching, yoga and Pilates moves) to see how each mat performed under various conditions.

To ensure a comprehensive review, I also consulted five additional fitness experts, including personal trainers, gym owners and fitness instructors, to get their input on what to look for in a mat and which mats they suggested for testing. Ultimately, each mat on this list was rated for durability, comfort and slip resistance during a range of workouts; then price was factored in to consider the mat’s overall value. Of the nine brands tested, seven made it onto our list of top picks. Here are the results for the best exercise mat.

Lululemon

Dimensions: 26 in. x 71 in. | Materials: Recycled polyvinyl butyral | Thickness: 0.24 in. | Weight: 4.4 lbs. | Special features: Grippy backside

This exercise mat was overwhelmingly rated as the best despite being the most straightforward option among the nine we tested. It’s a prime example of how simplicity can be superior.

Although it’s available only in black and comes at a higher price point, Lululemon has crafted a mat with excellent grip, low maintenance and just the right thickness — thick enough to provide protection on any surface, yet not too bulky. It’s functional for high-intensity plyometric exercises like burpees, but also feels comfortable for floor-based exercises like planks or sit-ups. I even tested it on asphalt and didn’t have to worry about the heat seeping through the mat. It’s also easy to roll up and store in my closet.

Katie Leonard, CPT, a group fitness instructor at Life Time Lakeshore-Irvine, praises this brand as her favorite because it strikes the perfect balance — not too squishy, with just the right amount of cushioning. She specifically looks for mats that provide good tailbone support. “Too much cushioning can hinder your balance and stability, making it harder to perform exercises effectively,” she explains.

You may be hesitant to lay out $100 for an exercise mat, but my assessment is that it’s on par with the quality you’d find at a gym, and its durability is hard to beat.

Pros

  • Good grip for hardwood floors
  • Simple design, no frills
  • Works well with footwear
  • 6 mm thickness offers support without feeling too padded — good for a variety of workouts

Manduka

Dimensions: 71 in. x 26 in. standard, 85 in. x 26 in. long | Materials: OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 polyvinyl chloride | Thickness: 0.24 in. | Weight: 7.5-9.5 lbs., depending on length | Special features: Limited-edition mats are hand processed, and each pattern is unique.

The standout features of the Manduka PRO exercise mat include an extra-grippy top for secure yoga movements, a proprietary dot-patterned bottom that prevents the mat from moving around during your flow and a generous level of cushioning for added comfort.

Sandra Gail Frayna, PT and founder of Hudson Premier Physical Therapy & Sports in New Jersey, says this is her favorite brand. “This mat is a good option as it has deep cushioning, which makes it gentle on your joints. This durable mat is made to last, [and it’s] safe with its slip-free material.”

However, we did notice that the mat can become slightly slippery when wet, making it less ideal for hot-yoga enthusiasts or anyone performing outdoor or sweaty HIIT routines. Also, it’s on the heavier side, so if you need something more portable, a lighter option, like the Lululemon Workout Mat, might better suit your needs.

That said, this mat’s cushioning and comfort are excellent and earned high marks overall. Its grippy texture kept our hands and feet securely in place during lower-intensity workouts and stretching routines, making it a top choice for those seeking support, stability and comfort.

Pros

  • Latex free
  • Grippy top and bottom
  • Ultra-dense cushion
Cons

  • Expensive
  • Becomes slippery with sweat
  • Heavy

ProsourceFit

Dimensions: 71 in. x 24 in. | Materials: High-density foam | Thickness: 0.5 in. | Weight: 2.55 lbs. | Special features: Includes sling for portability

Crafted with high-density foam, this thick exercise mat from ProsourceFit proved versatile during our yoga and Pilates tests. Its extra thickness provides superior cushioning, which can be a significant advantage, especially for those with back injuries or wrist or shoulder pain, as it offers excellent protection from hard flooring. However, this level of cushioning might not be ideal for everyone, and is harder to use when performing higher-intensity exercises like burpees.

Despite the mat’s thickness, we had no trouble transitioning between lower-intensity yoga poses or Pilates moves, and we appreciated the durable, high-quality material that promises long-lasting use. Plus, it comes with a free yoga mat sling, making it easy to transport to your next class.

Erica Walters, a fitness and Pilates expert and owner of Pilates Fit Studio, praises the mat for supporting her back and hips, “making it perfect for yoga and Pilates.” She also likes how easily the mat rolls up for convenient storage.

That said, the mat’s grip isn’t the best, likely due to its thickness, and it was more inclined to move around on the floor. It sometimes felt more like a pool floaty than a steady exercise mat.

Pros

  • Low maintenance
  • Sling for portability
  • Budget friendly
Cons

  • Might be too thick for some people
  • Feels like a pool floaty

Gratz

Dimensions: 80 in. x 24 in. | Materials: Not provided | Thickness: 2 in. | Weight: 65 lbs. | Special features: Wooden dowel handles and optional foot boxes

The Gratz Folding Mat is undeniably an investment with a price tag that reflects its premium quality. However, this well-crafted mat stands out as an alternative to more expensive Pilates equipment (which can run thousands of dollars) and is customizable with 85 different upholstery color options, making it a stylish addition to the home.

With its superior finishes and exceptional durability, you can expect it to last a lifetime. I found it remarkably sturdy, even after dragging it across the floor. I had no concerns about the fabric or handles tearing or coming loose.

While it takes up more space than a traditional mat, the Folding Mat offers more convenient storage, making it suitable even for those with limited room.

Walters is a fan, saying it’s the “holy grail” of exercise mats for Pilates lovers — the included dowel handles and fabric loops make it easy to perform Pilates-specific movements with focus. “This mat has it all. It combines comfort and support. [It] ensures improved flexibility, increased muscle tone and focused exercise,” she says.

A bonus is the option to purchase foot boxes, allowing you to get even more out of your Pilates workouts.

The primary downside is its high price — it’s certainly an investment piece — and because each product is made to order, the lead time for delivery can take months.

It’s also important to note that aside from other stretching or yoga workouts, the Folding Mat isn’t intended for other routines. This isn’t one you want to use if your primary form of exercise is strength training or HIIT.

Pros

  • 85 colors available
  • Sturdy
  • Allows for rolling movements
  • Ideal for individuals serious about home-based Pilates
Cons

  • Expensive
  • Delivery takes a while
  • Specific for Pilates or stretching workouts, not general use

ProsourceFit

Dimensions: 72 in. x 24 in. | Materials: Polyethylene foam | Thickness: 1.5 in. | Weight: 4.65 lbs. | Special features: Folding

Unlike other exercise mats that roll up, this ProsourceFit mat folds in half for easy storage and features a side handle for portability. I found it convenient to slip into my car and take it to the park for outdoor workouts. And to that end, its extra thickness made it more comfortable to use on uneven surfaces like grass and gravel (you don’t have to worry about a stray pebble poking you in the back like you might with a thinner mat).

At 1.5-in. thick, it offers ample cushioning, making it ideal for exercises that require jumping and landing, like jump squats. And for those who practice handstands in yoga, the mat’s sturdiness and cushioning provide an extra level of support, although some people may not like the feel of the added padding.

Jason Kozma, CPT and former Mr. America bodybuilder, says this is his favorite stretching mat for hard floors. “It’s just large enough for most stretch positions,” he says. And it’s high quality. “It’s the same kind of portable mat we have at my gym.”

While this mat doesn’t have as much grippiness as some of the other mats on this list, at 4.65 lbs., it does a good job of staying put through most movements.

Pros

  • Budget friendly
  • Thick
  • Easy to fold and fit in the car
Cons

  • Takes up significant storage space
  • Only three colors available

primasole

Dimensions: 68 in. x 24 in. | Materials: Polyvinyl chloride | Thickness: 0.16 in. | Weight: 840 g. | Special features: Folds up like a towel

You may hesitate to pack your exercise mat the next time you take a flight if you think you have to make space for a more traditional mat. But the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warns that travel often involves extended periods of sitting, which can increase your risk of developing deep vein thrombosis. A quick stretching session between flights or after you land can help get your blood flowing and potentially prevent serious health issues.

That said, packing a large rolling mat or a heavier option may not be feasible. With this mat, there’s little need to worry about its size or weight — it folds up like a towel and weighs less than 2 lbs. You can easily tuck it among your shirts and pants without taking up much space.

Of course, this level of portability often comes at the expense of functionality. That said, I was impressed by how well the mat maintained its grip and shape even after being folded for hours. I took it on a trip to the Paris 2024 Olympics, and after over 17 hours in my luggage, it held up beautifully. I even rinsed it off under the faucet in my hotel room without any issues.

I also appreciate the range of pretty colors it comes in, making matching the mat to my luggage easy.

On the downside, the mat is relatively thin and doesn’t provide much cushioning, so I wouldn’t recommend it as your go-to yoga mat for everyday use. However, keeping it tucked away in your luggage can be a great way to stay active while on vacation. Plus, if you leave it in your suitcase between trips, you’ll never forget to pack it!

Pros

  • Folds like a towel and fits into any suitcase
  • Gorgeous colors
  • Very affordable
Cons

  • Unconventional
  • Thin
  • Not ideal for agility or HIIT exercises as it moves around

Stakt

Dimensions: 69 x 24 in. flat, 24 x 3 x 12 in. folded | Materials: Not provided | Thickness: 12 mm. | Weight: 3 lbs. | Special features: Unique folding design allows it to fold in sections

Sometimes you need an exercise mat that offers more cushion for your hands, elbows or knees. Sometimes you need an exercise mat that’s less cushioned and more dense for active movements or those that require greater stability. It can be a balance to find a mat that does a little bit of everything (which could explain why a corner of my house is filled with five different mats, all of which I use for different activities).

The Stakt mat offers a high level of versatility due to its unique folding design. When unfolded, it functions much like a traditional yoga mat, but with a more cushiony, 12-mm base (most yoga mats range from 5-8 mm thick).

When you’re craving a little more cushioning, the mat’s design enables you to fold individual sections, “stacking” them on top of each other. This gives you the freedom to create more padding where you need it. For instance, if you want more cushion under your knees when performing a kneeling hip flexor stretch or under your hands when performing push-ups, you can fold one or two segments to enjoy additional support. You can also fold it all the way up for easy storage or to use it as a low platform for performing additional exercises, like triceps dips.

I really like the design, comfort and feel, and the mat is lightweight, making it easy to transport and store. That said, it’s not as grippy as some mats, and its lighter weight means it’s more likely to move around when doing more active exercises, like lateral slides.

Pros

  • Foldable design allows for personalized cushioning
  • Lightweight and easy to store
  • Comfortable for floor exercises
Cons

  • Not as grippy as some mats — more inclined to move around

Walters says there are four important factors to consider when purchasing an exercise mat:

  • Thickness: The thickness of the mat helps protect your spine during exercises on your back or side. Some mats are thinner, lighter and more portable, while others are thicker and firmer for added support.

  • Density: Often confused with thickness, density refers to the mat’s ability to withstand pressure over time. A denser mat is typically more durable and less likely to develop indentations, even with prolonged use. It’s possible for a mat to be thin, but dense, or thick but not dense. A thicker, less dense mat often provides softer cushioning for stretching or ab moves. But a denser (often heavier) mat provides more stability, making it appropriate for balance poses or higher-intensity exercises.

  • Portability: If you’re planning to take your mat on the go, like to a yoga class, it’s important to choose one that rolls up or comes with a handle for simple transport. For convenient storage at home, look for a mat that is designed to fold.

  • Nonslip materials: These are crucial for ensuring safety and minimizing the risk of injuries during workouts. Opt for mats made from high-grip materials like natural rubber, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), or thermoplastic elastomer (TPE), which provide excellent traction and durability. Additionally, mats with textured surfaces offer enhanced grip, preventing slips during a range of exercises.

As a personal trainer, I have extensive experience in using a variety of mats for personal and professional use. This gave me a solid background to research and select the mats to test for this piece. I also consulted five additional fitness and physical therapy experts and trainers to get their input on their favorite mats and the features they suggest to their clients. Based on my own expertise and the other experts’ input, I researched and selected 11 of the newest and most popular models to see how they held up. I used each mat during a range of cardio, strength-training and stretching sessions (including yoga and Pilates), performing exercises like squats, lunges, planks and sit-ups on each mat.

Based on my tests, each mat was rated for durability, comfort and slip resistance before factoring in the price to assess the mat’s overall value.

To clean your exercise mat, you can prepare a simple cleaning solution. Walters suggests mixing four drops of free and clear dish soap with water in a small spray bottle. Spray the solution onto your mat, then wipe it down with a clean cloth. Be sure to let the mat air dry before storing it.

According to Walters, you should wipe down your mat after every workout. “Cleaning your mat after each use helps prevent the buildup of bacteria and lingering odors, keeping it clean and fresh for your next session.”

You might prefer a separate mat if you travel often. Renel Scarlett, coach and co-owner of the Works Health Club, suggests choosing “a mat that is easy to roll up and store, perhaps in a corner of your house or under the bed.”

Three brands of exercise mats didn’t make it to the final list:

ProsourceFit Puzzle Exercise Mat
This ProsourceFit exercise mat is exactly like the name says: It’s a puzzle. Like a child’s playroom floor, the mat fits together with pieces that connect like a puzzle. The mat was comfortable and easy to put together, but we didn’t include this in our list because of the unconventional shape. This is better suited as a mat to place under larger pieces of fitness equipment or to use to cover the entire floor in a home gym.

Gorilla Mat Premium Large Yoga Mat
The Gorilla Mat brand is known for its premium materials and elite-level cushioning, earning a top-notch reputation in the exercise industry. The yoga mat we tested is priced just under $150, and we found the investment worthwhile, especially since it comes with a lifetime warranty. The larger 6-x4-foot size is also ideal for agility exercises and strength-training moves. However, we ultimately didn’t include it on our list due to its strong rubber smell. While the odor will likely dissipate over time, our testing period wasn’t long enough to confirm this.

Microdry Deluxe Fitness Exercise Yoga Mat
The Microdry yoga mat is well-known for its three layers of cushioning, including charcoal-infused memory foam. This mat offers excellent comfort, making it a great option for stretching, especially if you have back pain. However, the top surface isn’t as grippy as some of the other mats we included on this list, making it less appropriate for exercises that require agile movements. This mat is likely best suited for yoga flow sessions or stretching exercises that involve lying down.

Gaiam Longer/Wider Dry-Grip Yoga Mat

This yoga mat from Gaiam is just what it suggests — it’s longer and wider than the standard mat, making it more appropriate for taller or larger individuals. At 5 mm thick, it isn’t as cushioned as most of the other mats on our list, and while we found it comfortable, the mat just didn’t feel as durable or as well-made as some. That said, it offers high-quality grip, making it a good choice for sweaty workouts.

Delta Air Lines‘ chief operating officer is leaving at the end of the month, the company said in a securities filing Friday.

CEO Ed Bastian said in an employee memo that Chief Operating Officer Mike Spanos is taking a job at another company.

His departure, after just over a year on the job, comes weeks after Delta suffered a meltdown in the wake of the massive CrowdStrike outage in July. Delta estimates those disruptions cost the airline some $500 million and said it will seek compensation from CrowdStrike and Microsoft.

However, Bastian said in the memo Friday that Spanos told him earlier in the summer that he was “considering opportunities outside of Delta.”

Delta doesn’t plan to replace Spanos, Bastian said. Instead, John Laughter, chief of operations and president of Delta’s TechOps maintenance and overhaul unit, and Allison Ausband, chief customer experience officer, will report to Bastian.

Spanos joined Delta in May 2023 and previously held the role of CEO at Six Flags Entertainment and executive positions at PepsiCo.

A 24-year-old woman is on a mission to see the world after coming up with creative ways to travel in her free time.

Ella Brown works in luxury lifestyle public relations in London while also running a travel social media account called @thatgingerabroad filled with travel tips and tricks.

The part-time content creator told Fox News Digital that although she gets only 25 days a year of paid time off from her full-time job — she’ll find ways to stretch it.

“I am strategic with booking my annual leave and often attach days off to bank holidays and weekends,” she said.

Brown first caught the travel bug in 2021, she said, when she traveled to the United States with two of her friends for three months.

Brown often goes on short, 48-hour trips to cities where she only needs to spend one night — that way, no time off is required, and she can ensure the budget is kept on track.

For example, Brown said she recently traveled to Nantes, France, for the weekend, which cost her less than $200 total for flights, hotel, food and drink, and spending money.
