The USWNT has made it to the soccer finals of the 2024 Summer Olympics! Alyssa Naeher, Lindsey Horan, Trinity Rodman and the rest of Team USA will play Brazil in the gold medal match this Saturday, kicking off at 11 a.m. ET. The USWNT set out to make a major comeback at this year’s Olympics, and comeback they have, with a winning streak advancing them past the group stage of the tournament, through the knockout stage and quarterfinals, to get another shot at that gold medal. Are you ready to watch? Here’s what you need to know about how to tune into the USWNT vs. Brazil game this Saturday.

Date: Saturday, Aug. 10

Time: 11 a.m. ET

TV channels: NBC, Telemundo

Streaming: Peacock

The USWNT plays Brazil in the final game of the 2024 Olympics at 11 a.m. ET. on Saturday, Aug. 3.

You can watch every Olympic sport and event this summer on Peacock, including the women’s soccer gold medal match. The USA vs. Brazil game will also air live on NBC and live in Spanish on Telemundo.

In addition to streaming on Peacock, the game will be broadcast live on NBC and in Spanish on Telemundo. If you want to see what TV channels will air this game or any other Olympic event, check out the official NBC Olympics schedule and toggle the filter to “TV only.”

(Peacock)

Starting at $8 a month, a Peacock subscription was the easiest way to stream all of the 2024 Olympics, but that’s not all it’s good for! On top of coverage of every Olympic sport in 2024, you can catch NFL games, college football, Premier League, and access thousands of hours of shows and movies, including beloved sitcoms such as Parks and Recreation and The Office. For $14 monthly you can upgrade to an ad-free subscription which includes live access to your local NBC affiliate (not just during designated sports and events) and the ability to download select titles to watch offline.

$8/month at Peacock

Peacock may be the most comprehensive place to watch the Olympics, but it comes with a monthly subscription fee. If you’re interested in watching the Olympics for free, you can stream free sports coverage from around the world with the help of a VPN. Looking to try a VPN for the first time? This guide breaks down the best VPN options for every kind of user.

For example, to watch the USWNT vs. Brazil game without signing up for Peacock, you can tune into Australia’s 9Now for full coverage of the game. Just sign into your VPN, find a server located in Australia, then make a free account on 9now.com to stream all the action.

And if you need help figuring out how to livestream with a VPN on your TV, there’s a guide for that too.

(ExpressVPN)

ExpressVPN offers “internet without borders,” meaning you can tune into Olympic coverage from all over the world rather than just what’s available in the U.S. All you’ll need to do is sign up for ExpressVPN and change your server location.

ExpressVPN’s added protection, speed and range of location options make it an excellent choice for first-time VPN users looking to stretch their streaming abilities, plus, it’s Engadget’s top pick for the best streaming VPN. New users can save 49% when they sign up for ExpressVPN’s 12-month subscription. Plus, the service offers a 30-day money-back guarantee, in case you’re nervous about trying a VPN.

MLB will host its first game at a NASCAR track, aiming to break attendance record

Baseball fans, start your engines.

Major League Baseball announced Friday that NASCAR’s iconic Bristol Motor Speedway will host a regular-season MLB game for the first time next year.

The game is set for Aug. 2, 2025, between the Atlanta Braves and the Cincinnati Reds. It will also be the first in-season MLB game to be held in Tennessee.

“We look forward to celebrating our game with a wide array of fans, both on and off the field throughout the weekend, and highlighting the rich traditions of sports, music and community in Tennessee and across the region,” MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement.

The Bristol Motor Speedway is one of the largest sporting venues in America with a seating capacity of close to 150,000.

The game next August is likely to break the single-game attendance record for a Major League Baseball game. In 2008, the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum hosted an exhibition game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Boston Red Sox in front of a crowd of 115,300, setting a Guinness World Record for the largest attendance ever at a baseball game. In comparison, the average MLB ballpark can seat between 40,000 to 45,000 fans.

This announcement comes as Major League Baseball makes a renewed to expand the game to new venues and fans across the United States and globally. The MLB has hosted games in many nontraditional ballparks, including in 2016 when a game was held on an active military base in Fort Bragg, North Carolina, or in 2021 when the Chicago White Sox played the New York Yankees on the iconic “Field of Dreams” in Dyersville, Iowa. And as recently as June, the league hosted the “MLB at Rickwood Field: A Tribute to the Negro Leagues” in Birmingham, Alabama, two days after the death of Hall of Famer Willie Mays.

The MLB has also outlined a schedule of ambitious international games, including playing in cities such as Tokyo, Mexico City, Paris, and San Juan, Puerto Rico, all in the 2025 season.

Meanwhile, the Bristol Motor Speedway is no stranger to high-profile non-NASCAR events. The track hosted an NFL exhibition game in 1961. In 2016, Tennessee and Virginia Tech played in the “Battle at Bristol” on a purpose-built field in the infield that drew 156,990 fans, the largest crowd ever to watch an NCAA football game.

Atlanta Braves third baseman Austin Riley told The Athletic, which was the first to report this news Tuesday, “You see all this stuff, teams traveling (abroad), change it up a little bit. I think it’ll be kind of cool and unique. It’ll be a fun experience.”

Delta says chaos after CrowdStrike outage cost it $380 million in revenue

Delta Air Lines on Thursday said last month’s CrowdStrike outage and subsequent mass flight cancellations cost it some $550 million and reiterated that it is pursuing damages against the company as well as Microsoft.

The financial impact includes a $380 million revenue hit in the current quarter “primarily driven by refunding customers for cancelled flights and providing customer compensation in the form of cash and SkyMiles,” the Atlanta-based airline said in a securities filing.

The incident, in which it canceled some 7,000 flights, also meant a $170 million expense “associated with the technology-driven outage and subsequent operational recovery,” the carrier said, adding that its fuel bill will likely be $50 million lower because of the scrubbed flights.

Delta struggled more than its competitors to recover from the July 19 outage, which took millions of Windows-based machines offline around the world. The disruptions occurred at the height of the summer travel season, stranding thousands of Delta customers, a rare incident for the carrier that markets itself as a premium carrier that gets top marks for reliability.

“An operational disruption of this length and magnitude is unacceptable, and our customers and employees deserve better,” CEO Ed Bastian said in the filing. “Since the incident, our people have returned the operation to an industry-leading position that is consistent with the level of performance our customers expect from Delta.”

Delta’s cancellations in the days after the outage topped its tally for all of 2019. The U.S. Department of Transportation last month said it is investigating Delta’s response to the outage and flight cancellations.

CrowdStrike responded in a statement on Thursday that Delta “continues to push a misleading narrative” and said that the company’s chief security officer was in “direct contact” with Delta’s chief information and security officer “within hours of the incident, providing information and offering support.”

Read more CNBC airline news

In a letter to CrowdStrike’s attorney on Thursday, Delta’s lawyer, David Boies, said 1.3 million customers were affected by the outage and that it shut down 37,000 Delta computers.

CrowdStrike and Microsoft lawyers earlier this week fired back at Delta, saying they reached out to offer Delta help. Microsoft on Wednesday suggested that Delta hasn’t invested enough in its technology compared with rivals.

“If CrowdStrike genuinely seeks to avoid a lawsuit by Delta, then it must accept real responsibility for its actions and compensate Delta for the severe damage it caused to Delta’s business, reputation, and goodwill,” Boies said in the letter to CrowdStrike on Thursday.

About 60% of Delta’s “mission-critical applications” and their data depend on Microsoft and CrowdStrike, he said, adding that the disruption “required significant human intervention by skilled crew specialists to get Delta people and aircraft to the right locations to resume normal, safe operation.”

Lifting weights doesn’t make you bulky and 4 other strength-training myths people need to stop believing

0

Strength training has a ton of health benefits, including reducing your overall mortality risk. But throughout my decade-plus in the fitness world, I’ve heard my fair share of myths about it. With so much conflicting fitness information out there, it’s tough to know what’s true and what’s not, so I’ve made it my life’s work to help people sift through it all.

While there’s no one way to get fit and strong, trading these outdated myths for more flexible, intuitive, science-backed advice can help you gain sustainable results and get closer to your fitness goals. To that end, here are the top five strength-training myths you need to stop believing.

Many clients, especially women, worry about becoming too “bulky” from lifting and shy away from heavy weights. With over 10 years of experience training others and lifting weights, I can assure you that getting bulky cannot happen by accident. For most people, strength training will craft a leaner and more “toned” physique, boost metabolism and improve overall body composition without adding bulk.

The truth is that it requires years of consistent strength training, plus a mix of genetics and a high-calorie diet, to build a considerable amount of muscle mass that people will notice. This kind of training is usually more intense than what most people tend to commit to. Also, women naturally have lower testosterone levels than men, making a bulky look even less likely — and certainly not an outcome that will happen without a lot of intentional effort. So instead of fearing the weights, use them to build strength, confidence and a healthier body.

As you age, keeping your mobility for everyday activities needs to be a top priority if you want to remain active and independent. Muscle strength declines slowly in your 30s until your 50s when the loss speeds up — dropping by 15% in your 60s and up to 30% in your 80s. Losing strength makes it harder to coordinate muscles, stay balanced and walk, increasing your chances of falling and getting hurt. But strength training can help you save and even build muscle, which is crucial to staying strong and stable and serving up pickleballs well into your twilight years.

Studies have repeatedly shown that resistance training in your golden years (60 and over) can increase strength by building muscle mass and improving how well muscles activate and work together. Research has shown that even one year of heavy resistance training can have lasting benefits, helping older adults maintain muscle function and strength for years to come.

Experts, including myself, recommend that older people strength train three to four times a week or even less often if they are just starting out. Plus, side effects are rare, so it’s a safe and effective way to stay strong and independent.

Running, swimming, biking and all other forms of cardio are excellent for your heart and lungs and burn plenty of calories in the process. While cardiovascular exercise does tend to burn more calories than strength training, it’s not necessarily the best choice for fat loss. That’s because strength training will increase your muscle tissue, which helps you burn more calories even when you’re sitting still.

Research shows that resistance training can increase metabolism and help with long-term weight control. Your best bet is to combine strength training and cardio to achieve a healthy weight. Of course, it’s also essential to eat a healthy diet.

A very common concern I hear is that strength training might cause joint problems. While lifting weights with poor form certainly can lead to injuries, strengthening your muscles will help manage and prevent joint pain by boosting joint stability and durability. The more stable your joints are, the less stress they’ll endure, meaning a lower risk of pain and dysfunction over time.

Surprisingly, it’s the opposite. Lifting weights can actually improve joint range of motion and is as effective as stretching for flexibility. This means that lifting weights helps your joints move freely while staying strong and stable, which is vital for living and moving pain free.
