Apple AirPods for a record-low $69, plus more early Prime Day steals

0

Fans of fruit-themed tech, gather ’round! This year, Prime Day deals have arrived early — a full week early, in some cases. We’re talking all-time low prices on AirPods and massive discounts on a wide range of Apple devices. If you find that your buds just don’t have the same quality they once did (or you went just a little too far testing their water resistance), then it might be time to pick up a new pair.

The deals don’t just stop at audio, though. MacBooks are marked down by significant margins, too! And if you’re a student, you might be able to save even more through Apple’s Back to School program. Thinking of picking up an iPad for yourself? Apple Arcade has a lot of awesome games and makes for a great way to while away the hours when you’re escaping the summer heat. Why is this important? Easy: Apple rarely sees steep discounts like this, but this sale has some of the lowest prices ever on fan favorites.

Looking for even more deals? We’ve put together a roundup of the best early Prime Day savings across the board from all of your favorite brands, so don’t forget to check that out to find some of the sweetest, most Red Gala-worthy sales this side of Black Friday.

These are the cheapest AirPods you can buy. Not just now — ever! That’s right: these have never dropped this low before, so you can take advantage of all of their great features while paying about half what you normally would.

$69 at Amazon

Amazon

We named the AirPods Pro as the best wireless earbuds overall and for good reason: they combine truly excellent audio quality with impressive noise-canceling. The battery life is a major plus, too. But the biggest selling point? These are at an all-time low price right now — we’ve never seen them drop to this price before.

$169 at Amazon

Amazon

These third-generation buds combine some of the best features of the Pros with the affordability of the base AirPods. You get personalized spatial audio and improved sweat and water resistance (although the battery life is roughly the same), but now you get it for an all-time low price. That’s right: these didn’t even drop this low on Black Friday.

$129 at Amazon

Amazon

The AirPods Max are Apple’s only over-ear headphones, but they pack a whole lot of style into that package. Sure, they cost a pretty penny, but they’re currently marked down to the lowest price they’ve ever been. They have all the features you expect from AirPods, minus the potential discomfort of having a speaker in your ear.

$399 at Amazon

Amazon

When’s the last time you misplaced something? I spent far too long looking for my wallet this morning. AirTags can take away that problem entirely, allowing you to track exactly where your items vanish to. Right now, these are available for their lowest price ever. This deal makes it about $19 per tracker.

$75 at Amazon

Amazon

If you really only need to track a single item (and you don’t see any plans to expand that tracking in the future), then buying a single AirTag — especially when it’s on sale — is the way to go. With its one-tap setup, this little doodad goes to work right away.

$24 at Amazon

Amazon

This laptop is incredibly thin and light, which makes it perfect for anyone on the go. It has a lot of power despite its small size, and the discount is nothing to sneeze at, either — especially for a MacBook.

$999 at Amazon

Amazon

Powered by the M2 chip, this MacBook Air is just as lightweight as its newer cousins but is available at a slightly discounted rate. You might not think that $100 off is much, but we’ve rarely seen this model drop lower than this. Now is a great time to buy — stock is limited, and this deal might end when the stock runs out.

$899 at Amazon

Amazon

This iPad might be a few years old, but it offers one of the best value propositions of any tablet on the market. With this discount (which is only $20 more than the lowest price ever, by the way), you get a tablet that’s ideal for everything from working to playing, and for a bargain compared to the price of comparable tablets.

$247 at Amazon

Amazon

If all-day battery life, compatibility with the Apple Pencil and Magic Keyboard Folio and incredibly fast connection speeds sound good to you, then you’ll want to take a look at this tenth-generation powerhouse of a tablet.

$324 at Amazon

Amazon

If price has held you back from picking up an Apple smartwatch, this discount on the Apple Watch SE might be just the push you need to click that buy button. It tracks everything from heart rate to how well you sleep and even includes crash detection. Cool, huh? This price is only $11 above the lowest we’ve ever seen.

$189 at Amazon

Amazon

The Apple Watch Series 9 is one of the most advanced smartwatches you can buy today. This thing is loaded with accurate tracking technology — it can even do ECG scans! — among other cool features, like water resistance up to a certain depth. It’s good news for everyone then that it’s marked down so far for Prime Day.

$329 at Amazon

If you have Amazon Prime, you’ll get free shipping, of course. Not yet a member? No problem. You can sign up for your free 30-day trial here. (And by the way, those without Prime still get free shipping on orders of $25 or more.)

The choice of where to raise a family is a big one for millions of Americans — and some cities are better picks than others.

A recent study by WalletHub showed just which U.S. cities are the most family friendly in 2024.

The company compared more than 180 U.S. cities, including the 150 most populated ones, to find the best cities to live in based on various criteria.

SINGLE MOM TRAVELS TO 17 COUNTRIES WITH BABY DURING 3-YEAR PAID MATERNITY LEAVE

The five key dimensions include family fun, health and safety, education and child care, affordability and socio-economics.

Within each of those, other metrics evaluated included the number of playgrounds, skate parks and mini-golf locations per capita.

The study also looked at ideal weather, water quality, access to pediatricians, violent crime rate, high school graduation rate, summer learning opportunities, cost of living and more.

BEST CITIES TO RETIRE IN 2024

In the socioeconomic category, WalletHub analyzed the separation and divorce rate in cities, the unemployment rate, the wealth gap and other metrics.

Here are the top five U.S. cities to raise a family in 2024 according to this report.

1. Fremont, California

WalletHub named the city of Fremont, California, the most family-friendly city in the United States.

That’s due in part to its highest median family income after adjusting for the cost of living, at close to $122,000.

THIS SCENIC SOUTHERN CITY IS THE MOST POPULAR PLACE TO MOVE TO IN 2024

It was also ranked high due to 50.5% of its families having children under age 18, making it one of the highest rates in the country.

The city of Fremont also has a high percentage of public schools and summer camp opportunities.

HERE ARE THE 10 HAPPIEST CITIES IN AMERICA

Wallet Hub also said of Fremont that its “residents are able to stay healthy. Only 1.4% of children lack health insurance, the second-lowest percentage in the country, and only 1.1% of the population lacks access to healthy food. The city also has the fifth-most parkland acres per capita, allowing for good outdoor exercise opportunities.”

KOSÉ, I Peace, and Reju Enter Strategic Partnership to Develop Personalized Beauty Products Based on iPS Cells

0

Demonstration testing of “my own” beauty products

PALO ALTO, Calif., July 9, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — KOSÉ Corporation (Headquarters: Chuo-ku, Tokyo; President: Kazutoshi Kobayashi), I Peace, Inc. (Headquarters: Palo Alto, California, USA; Founder & CEO: Koji Tanabe), and Reju, Inc. (Headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo; CEO: Yurie Kamiya) have agreed to enter a strategic partnership to develop and provide personalized beauty products*1 containing iPSF (iPS cell extract), a unique ingredient derived from each customers’ own iPS cells*2. The personalized beauty products will not only contain iPSF but will be formulated in the optimal dosage form and texture to suit each customer’s preferences and sensibilities. This innovative approach ensures that customers can enjoy the beauty products meticulously tailored to their needs and desires. Before the end of 2024, the partnership plans to commence demonstration testing of the technical and business aspects of these beauty products, collaborating with medical institutions in Japan.

*1 Personalized beauty products resulting from this project will be provided through medical institutions under medical supervision, rather than being provided as cosmetics as defined by the Japanese Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Act.

*2 iPS cells are a type of stem cell that can proliferate almost indefinitely and differentiate into any type of cell in the various tissues and organs, making them promising for regenerative medicine applications.

Background to the strategic partnership

KOSÉ, a leading company in the business of beauty in Japan as a provider of cosmetics and other products, has joined forces with I Peace, a biotech company working in the field of iPS cell technology, and Reju, a supplier of iPSF. This strategic partnership is driven by a shared commitment to delivering personalized beauty solutions that are tailored to the unique individuality of each customer in a society that respects diversity.

With a focus on the 3G principals of Global, Gender, and Generation, KOSÉ is working on a mission to deliver the value of beauty to as many people as possible by targeting new customer segments, beyond adult women. KOSÉ is committed to providing a wide range of cosmetic products tailored to meet the unique needs of diverse customers including different functions and usability, by leveraging its extensive expertise and strength in cosmetics development and brand creation. To further expand its value propositions beyond the realm of beauty, KOSÉ has been exploring the technical and business aspects in the areas of health and cure, elevating its value propositions to holistic well-being concept.

I Peace, on the other hand, is engaged in a number of businesses including the supply of clinical-grade iPS cells to pharmaceutical companies and cell and gene therapy developers worldwide. Additionally, I Peace offers iPS cell banking services for individuals, enabling them to store their own iPS cells for personalized disease treatment in the future and other applications. Through the groundbreaking technologies, I Peace has significantly reduced the cost of manufacturing iPS cells, paving the way for a future where individuals will be able to make use of their own iPS cells.

With a separate technical partnership with I Peace, Reju is aiming to apply cutting-edge iPS cell component extraction and refining technologies to the areas of beauty and health. Reju is researching and verifying the potential contributions of iPSF, a unique iPS cell extract produced through these advanced technologies, to cell rejuvenation and longevity. The unique iPSF components are expected to have wide-ranging applications across various beauty and healthcare areas.

Recognizing the potential of delivering truly personalized beauty solutions tailored to each customer by combining their expertise in beauty and iPS cell technology, these three companies have come together to form this new strategic partnership.

Outline of the initiative

This initiative aims to provide customers with a wide range of beauty products uniquely tailored to each individual. The process begins with the iPS cells generation from somatic cells which are collected from the customer’s own blood. In the process, the extracts of their own iPS cells are taken and stored so the customers can enjoy beauty products containing extracts of their own iPS cells. Because iPS cells are rejuvenated in the cell generation process, customers can benefit from the cellular activity levels similar to their younger selves. Moreover, the use of iPSF derived from the customers’ own cells ensures high biocompatibility, minimizing the risk of adverse reactions. In this initiative, I Peace will generate, culture, and manage iPS cells from an individual’s somatic cells using its extensive experience in operating personal iPS cell banking services employing its latest biotechnology and stringent safety protocols to ensure the highest quality. Utilizing its technical partnership with I Peace, Reju will manufacture and supply iPSF for the beauty products.

The beauty products offered through this initiative will be tailored to customers’ preferences not only in components but also in a dosage form. For example, the personalized beauty products will be available in various forms like gels for those who prefer a fresh feeling, or creams for those concerned about dryness. This versatility ensures each customer’s unique desires for usability, feel, and the added value are met, in alignment with the sensibilities they may have. KOSÉ, having developed many different cosmetics in pursuit of ever-better usability, will be in charge of providing the personalized beauty products to customers’ satisfaction.

This initiative will appoint Japanese medical institutions who will take care of collecting somatic cells from customers, preparing iPSF-based formulations, and other relevant work, with the aim to commence demonstrating testing before the end of 2024.

As part of its rejuvenation research, KOSÉ has been analyzing and evaluating dermal fibroblasts collected from a single donor from the ages of 36 to 67, as well as iPS cells generated from these cells, to study skin aging. KOSÉ has reported that initialization of differentiated cells into undifferentiated iPS cells restores the length of telomeres (the terminal portion of chromosomes that shortens with each cell division) in all aged cells. In another approach, KOSÉ has succeeded in inducing dermal fibroblasts to differentiate into new dermal fibroblasts via iPS cells, and has ascertained that the quality of mitochondria was restored in dermal fibroblasts induced from these iPS cells when compared with the original cells.

I Peace was founded in 2015 by Dr. Koji Tanabe, a graduate of Professor Shinya Yamanaka’s laboratory at Kyoto University and the second author of the landmark paper on the world’s first human iPS cell line. Dr. Tanabe has been involved in iPS cell research since it’s early days. By manufacturing and selling cells for clinical and research use, I Peace aims to quickly bring a variety of useful iPS cell technologies to the world. Recognizing the unique advantage of iPS cells—being able to generate them from anyone and use them for personalized treatment—I Peace launched the Personal iPS Cell Banking service with the commitment to making it possible for individuals to obtain and use their own cells for personalized disease treatment. The I Peace cell manufacturing facility has been licensed by Japan’s Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Agency (PMDA) to manufacture specified processed cells and is also registered with the FDA in the United States. I Peace supplies clinical-grade iPS cells to pharmaceutical companies and cell therapy development companies worldwide.

Focusing on the rejuvenating effect of iPS cells, Reju entered a technical partnership with I Peace and conducted research and development with the aim of applying iPS cell technology to rejuvenation, both inside and out, to improve the quality of life in an era of 100-year life spans. Through extensive research and development efforts, Reju has developed iPSF (iPS cell extract), innovative product that encapsulates the rejuvenation properties of iPS cells. Reju values science and evidence-based approach to make a contribution to the next-generation of personal beauty and healthcare, going beyond existing products and services in anti-aging industry.

Barcelona protesters throw items and spray travelers with water while shouting ‘tourists go home’

0

Mass tourism troubles hit fever pitch in Barcelona, Spain, on Saturday as protesters threw items and sprayed travelers with water guns and canned drinks, while shouting “tourists go home.”

The protesters — angry about the city’s long-standing problems with overtourism — used thick police-style tape to block hotel entrances and sidewalk cafes in the small neighborhood of Barceloneta in a symbolic effort to close the establishments.

The crowd, which numbered some 3,000 people, according to local media, also marched holding a large banner demanding that city officials “decrease tourists now.”

Videos and photographs show people attempting to avoid the crowds — some walking away from their tables mid-meal — while others, including restaurant staff, verbally sparred with anti-tourism activists.

Hotel guests and protesters clash in Barcelona as anger over mass tourism grows

The demonstration coincides with Barcelona’s peak summer travel months. In 2023, hotel occupancy rates neared 80% in July and August, as the city of 1.6 million people swelled to accommodate more than 4 million visitors, according to the Barcelona City Council.

Record-breaking arrivals

But the delicate dance between locals and visitors had spiraled long before that.

Hotels in the city quadrupled from 1990 to 2023 to accommodate a rush of travelers, which surged from 1.7 million to 7.8 million during the same period, according to the Barcelona City Council. That doesn’t include the millions who travel to the city’s outskirts, too, it notes.

The city also buckles under the weight of the Barcelona Cruise Port as day-trippers descend on the city by the thousands. The port processed some 2.2 million passengers in 2023, up from 560,000 in 2000, according to its website.

The result is a city in which many locals can no longer afford to live, activists say — most notably because of the housing market, where rents have increased 68% in the past decade, according to Barcelona’s mayor, Jaume Collboni.

Collboni announced in June that Airbnb-style short-term house rentals would be banned in the city by 2028. The move would add some 10,000 apartments back into the long-term rental market.

A report published by Barcelona’s City Council in 2023, titled “Perception of Tourism in Barcelona” shows more residents feel tourism is beneficial, rather than detrimental, to the city. However, the gap between these numbers has closed through the years, it showed.

Half of the 1,860 respondents surveyed said they modify where they go in the city because of tourists. “They avoid a widespread area around the city centre (Plaça Catalunya, La Rambla, Gothic Quarter, Raval, Old Town, Waterfront), as well as the Sagrada Família area. In terms of specific spaces, Park Güell tops the list of those deliberately avoided.”

Even those who recognize the economic contribution of tourism are becoming disillusioned by the sheer number of travelers in the city, according to the report.

“More and more people believe that Barcelona has reached its tourism capacity limit,” it states.

LG ACQUIRES ATHOM TO ADVANCE AI-ENABLED INTELLIGENT SPACE BUSINESS

Company to Gain Deeper Insights Into Customers’ Lifestyle and Usage Patterns and Accelerate LG ThinQ AI Home Business

SEOUL, South Korea, July 9, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — LG Electronics (LG) recently acquired an 80 percent stake in Athom, an industry-leading smart home platform company based in Enschede, Netherlands. The agreement includes plans to acquire the remaining 20 percent within the next three years. This strategic move aims to enhance LG’s connectivity within open smart home ecosystems. By integrating Athom’s capabilities with LG’s Affectionate Intelligence technology, LG aspires to lead the AI-driven home innovation era.

LG Acquires Athom to Advance AI-Enabled Intelligent Space Business
LG Acquires Athom to Advance AI-Enabled Intelligent Space Business

LG plans to integrate Athom’s extensive connectivity – which links thousands of appliances, sensors and lighting devices – with the generative AI-enabled LG ThinQ platform. This integration aims to create an AI home that delivers optimal space solutions by gaining a deeper understanding of the customer. In LG’s AI home, customers will engage with generative AI, which will manage appliances and IoT devices to create a personalized environment tailored to their preferences.

LG envisions expanding the differentiated customer experience of AI homes to various spaces where customers spend their time, such as commercial spaces and mobility environments, ultimately realizing and advancing the concept of ‘Intelligent Space.’

Athom is a technology company that sells the smart home hub ‘Homey,’ which connects with home appliances and IoT devices, and also offers cloud subscription services. Founded in 2014, ‘Homey’ has expanded primarily in Europe over the past decade, gaining a loyal customer base of hundreds of thousands of users. As of 2023, Homey devices are available in Australia, Singapore, the US and Canada, in addition to Europe.

Athom has developed its own hub and OS to create an independent smart home ecosystem. Its flagship product, Homey Pro, can connect to more than 50,000 devices and supports various connection methods, including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Z-Wave, Matter and Thread, making it highly versatile and open.

The Homey App Store, managed by Athom, offers around 1,000 applications for connecting and controlling home devices from brands such as Philips Hue and IKEA. Many of these applications are based on official partnerships, alongside a large number of apps developed by the Homey community. This community of developers actively contributes to Athom’s open platform, continuously expanding the range of brands and devices that can be connected to the hub. Users can easily create a smart home environment by downloading apps from the store and linking their devices.

LG is poised to significantly enhance the scalability required for implementing AI homes, aiming to achieve the highest industry standards. This will be accomplished by integrating its LG ThinQ platform’s smart home technology with Athom’s open ecosystem and IoT device connectivity. The acquisition of Athom is particularly noteworthy, as it will enable LG to incorporate third-party devices and services into its ecosystem. This integration will provide LG with deeper insights into customer usage patterns and expedite the delivery of personalized services.

“The acquisition of Athom is a cornerstone for our AI home business,” said Jung Ki-hyun, executive vice president and head of LG’s Platform Business Center. “By leveraging the synergy between the two companies, we will expand our open ecosystem and external integration services, aiming to provide customers with more diverse and multidimensional space experiences.”

Even after the acquisition, Athom will continue to operate independently, maintaining its business operations and branding. This strategy is designed to maximize Athom’s growth potential and unique strengths while fostering synergies in business, research and development capabilities, and platform utilization.

LG’s introduction of the AI home, which integrates Athom’s open smart home platform with its own AI technology, underscores the company’s commitment to transitioning from a hardware-focused to a software-based platform business. In 2021, LG expanded its TV business from hardware to software by entering the TV platform market with its webOS platform. To support this shift, LG acquired Alphonso, a US-based global technology company specializing in television media, machine learning and big-data analytics. Alphonso now operates as LG Ad Solutions, a core component of the webOS content and service business.

LG aims to establish continuous relationships with customers through numerous devices connected to the AI home, ultimately transforming into a ‘Smart Life Solution Company’ that provides differentiated value.

According to market research firm TechNavio, the global smart home market is projected to grow from USD 81.2 billion in 2023 to USD 260.24 billion by 2028, with an average annual growth rate of 26.23 percent.

“LG is evolving into an intelligent space solutions company that connects and expands experiences in various living spaces. We will continue to make strategic investments to shift our business paradigm, as evidenced by our successive entries into platform-based appliance services and solutions such as the webOS advertising platform and AI home,” said William Cho, CEO of LG Electronics.

A single mother is living her best life after deciding to travel the world with her toddler while on a three-year paid maternity leave.

Sarah Noack, 26, of Frankfurt, Germany, just recently ended her maternity leave and quit her job.

The flight attendant became pregnant with her first child, Luana Noack, in 2021 and was told she could not work for the airline while pregnant.

That meant that Sarah Noack would be placed on maternity leave from then on.

She told SWNS, however, that her company would also allow mothers to continue on maternity leave during their breastfeeding journey — which for this mom would be for roughly two more years.

“Flight attendants aren’t allowed to work when they are pregnant at the airline I was with, so I was still having a full salary but not working,” she said.

“I have been on parental leave since my daughter was born,” she added, as “we have a breastfeeding policy where you get your whole salary while breastfeeding.”

Sarah Noack decided to take the time off as an opportunity to travel the world with her newborn daughter.

“I wanted to have an adventurous life and have a child,” she told SWNS.

From there, baby Luana Noack took her first steps on a beach in Bali and spoke her first words in Indonesia — something her mother said was a memorable experience.

Although traveling full-time with a newborn baby likely sounds difficult in theory to many, Sarah Noack said she actually found it to be easier than “having a normal routine in Germany.”

In April 2024, a marine ecological survey team composed of Chinese scientists launched a two-month investigation on the Ren ‘ai Jiao of China’s Nansha Islands. On July 8, based on the survey, the South China Sea Ecology Center and the South China Sea Development Research Institute under the Ministry of Natural Resources released a report on the damage to the coral reef ecosystem of Ren ‘ai Jiao. The report shows that the decaying grounded vessel and associated human activities have caused sustained and cumulative damage to the reef ecosystem on Ren ‘ai Jiao.

The documentary “Ren’ai Jiao: Teardrop of the Nansha Islands” features many interviews of scientists and team members who participated in the remote sensing image collection and on-site investigation. The deadly damage of the decaying grounded vessel on the Ren ‘ai Jiao coral reef ecosystem was restored in the form of HD real image and 3D animation. It analyzed the main reasons for the degradation of the coral reef ecosystem of Ren ‘ai Jiao.

Audiences can learn from the documentary that the population structure of macrobenthic invertebrates in the reef area is unbalanced, with heavy metals, oils and active phosphates in the seawater in the reef area significantly higher than historical records.

Air travel demand is breaking records. Airline profits are not

Record summer air travel demand isn’t translating to record U.S. airline profits. Carriers will have to answer for that disconnect when they report quarterly results this month.

Some airlines have forecast record demand, and in some cases, revenue. On Sunday, the Transportation Security Administration screened more than 3 million people, a one-day record.

But higher labor and other costs have eaten into airlines’ bottom lines. To adapt to slower demand growth and other challenges, some carriers have slowed if not halted hiring compared with hiring sprees when they rebuilt after the pandemic.

And some airlines are facing delays of new, more fuel-efficient aircraft from Airbus and Boeing at the same time that a Pratt & Whitney engine recall has grounded dozens of jets.

Yet U.S. airlines have increased capacity, flying about 6% more seats in July than they did in July 2023, according to aviation data firm OAG. The expansion is keeping airfare in check, and stocks in the sector have fallen behind the broader market.

The NYSE Arca Airline Index, which tracks 16 mostly U.S. airlines, is down almost 19% this year, while the S&P 500 has advanced more than 16%.

‘Clear as mud’

What the third quarter will look like for airlines is “clear as mud,” Raymond James analyst Savanthi Syth said in a note Friday, citing headwinds such as potentially weaker spending from coach-class clientele, the Paris Olympics’ impact on some Europe bookings, and possible changes in corporate travel demand.

Also, some travelers have been opting for trips in late spring and early summer, raising questions about late-summer demand.

Investors will get more insight into the traditionally slower tail end of summer and the rest of the year when airlines report quarterly results, starting with Delta Air Lines on Thursday.

Analysts consider Delta the best of the bunch, thanks in large part to the airline’s success in marketing more expensive, premium seats and its lucrative deal with American Express.

In April, Delta, the most profitable U.S. airline, forecast quarterly adjusted earnings of $2.20 to $2.50 a share for the second quarter, which would be down from the adjusted $2.68 a share it brought in a year earlier.

Delta, its rival United Airlines, which reports the following week, and Alaska Airlines are top picks for Wolfe Research airline analyst Scott Group, who said in a June 28 research note that the three have less earnings risk and better free cash flow than other carriers.

Shares of Delta and United are each up about 14% this year through July 5, the standouts in a sector that is mostly down this year. Alaska shares are down about 2%.

Why airlines are investing millions on bigger and fancier seats

Cheaper fares

Airports are bustling this summer. But airlines have been expanding their schedules, both domestically and internationally, pushing down fares. U.S.-Europe capacity for July is up nearly 8% from a year ago, according to consulting firm Airline/Aircraft Projects, with new routes largely targeting leisure travelers.

Fare-tracking company Hopper reported in June that summer flights between the U.S. and Europe in coach were going for $892 on average, compared with $1,065 for summer 2023.

Airfare was down nearly 6% in May from a year earlier, according to the latest U.S. inflation data.

Lowered forecasts

Despite higher numbers of passengers, some carriers have admitted weaker sales than expected because of the increased flights. American Airlines on May 28 cut its second-quarter revenue and profit forecasts and announced its chief commercial officer was leaving after a sales strategy backfired.

“The domestic supply and demand imbalance has led to a weaker domestic pricing environment than we had forecast,” American Airlines CEO Robert Isom said at a Bernstein industry conference the next day. “There’s more discounting activity than we saw a year ago. Now, industry capacity is expected to come down in the second half of the year, and that should help.”

Southwest Airlines cut its second-quarter forecast in late June, citing shifting demand patterns. The Dallas-based airline is under pressure to quickly change its long-profitable business model — which has no seat assignments and one class of service — as big rivals such as United and Delta tout strong growth from premium cabins.

The airline is trying to fend off activist investor Elliott Investment Management, which disclosed a nearly $2 billion stake in the carrier in June and called for a leadership change.

“We will adapt as our customers’ needs adapt,” Southwest CEO Bob Jordan said at an industry event hosted by Politico on June 12, discussing potential new revenue initiatives.

Both American and Southwest report second-quarter results toward the end of July.

Making changes

Some money-losing carriers, such as JetBlue Airways and Frontier Airlines, are already making changes.

JetBlue has been cutting unprofitable flights this year and making sure that planes outfitted with its high-end Mint business cabin, where tickets can go for more than four times a coach fare, is on the right routes.

Meanwhile Frontier Airlines and fellow discounter Spirit Airlines have done away with change fees for standard coach tickets and above, following larger, legacy carriers’ move during the pandemic. Both budget airlines announced in May that they will start offering bundled fares to include seat assignments and other add-ons that they used to charge for.

Spirit, which is struggling with the fallout from a judge’s ruling that blocked JetBlue from buying the airline, and is the most affected by the Pratt engine grounding, last week warned some 200 pilots they could be furloughed this year, according to the pilots union.

At Spirit’s annual shareholder meeting in June, CEO Ted Christie brushed off suggestions that Spirit is considering filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, with a more than $1 billion debt payment due in September 2025.
