Whether your activity of choice is hiking, biking, camping or boating, you can find what you’re looking for at one of Vermont’s state parks. 

The state’s Division of Vermont State Parks manages more than 50 state parks, which dot the entire length of the state, from the southern section near the Massachusetts border, to the area around the capital city of Montpelier on I-89, all the way to its north section, especially on the edge of Lake Champlain or on its many islands.

Vermont is also a freshwater fisher’s paradise. Lake Champlain is the perfect destination for fishermen, with popular species including perch, bluegill, smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, rock bass, brown bullhead and northern pike, according to the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department.

Trout fishing is also popular in Vermont’s many rivers and streams. 

The open season for trout begins on the second Saturday of April and runs through Oct. 31. However, you can still catch-and-release outside of the open season (using artificial flies or lures only).

Vermont is well-known for its winter sports, such as skiing, both downhill and cross-country, and snow shoeing. Be sure to dress warmly, as it’s not unheard of for the temperature to drop to single digits in some parts of the state.

Take a drive across Vermont and you’ll notice that the landscape is dotted with small farms selling eggs, produce or maple syrup. 

Restaurants across the state often buy locally sourced food to offer diners farm-to-table meals.

Dairy farming is a major industry in Vermont, dotting the landscape with scenic pastureland. The state’s Agency of Agriculture Food and Markets estimates that there are more than 500 dairy farms in Vermont that produce milk from cattle, sheep and goats. 

Vermont is also famous for its maple syrup industry. Syrup season usually falls between February and April, during which time you might see huge clouds of smoke and steam rising from sugar houses as sugarmakers boil down the sap from maple trees to process into syrup.

The state is also known for its thriving craft beer scene, boasting the most craft beer producers per capita than any other state. 

It’s legal for adults 21 years or older to possess up to an ounce of cannabis, and recreational use of cannabis is legal in Vermont. “It’s very much a part of Vermont’s ‘brand,’” said Lhowe. “Vermont is very earthy, very crunchy, very green.”

Even the state law itself puts a premium on beauty: In 1968, Vermont passed the State Billboard Act, which bans unsightly signs on state and local roads.

“What I tell people to do is to get off the highway, get on back roads, and if you get lost, just keep driving downhill,” said Lhowe. 

Sooner or later, you’ll encounter a town, as development occurred along Vermont’s waterways at lower elevations. “That’s how you discover what Vermont really is like.”

Caliway Announced CBL-514 Phase 2 Study for Cellulite Treatment Met All Primary and Secondary Endpoints

NEW TAIPEI CITY, April 26, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — Caliway Biopharmaceuticals (Caliway) today announced the topline results of the CBL-0201EFP Phase 2 study, which met all the primary and secondary efficacy endpoints in the ITT (Intent-to-treat) and PP (per-protocol) analysis population, demonstrating CBL-514’s statistically and clinically significant efficacy in improving cellulite severity with favorable safety and tolerance profiles.

CBL-514, Caliway’s lead pipeline, is a multi-indication lipolysis injection that can reduce subcutaneous adiposity by inducing adipocyte apoptosis. Among all the current cellulite treatment products, CBL-514 is the first and only product to treat cellulite in the raised areas.

Apart from cellulite treatment, CBL-514 is also under Phase 2 study for subcutaneous fat reduction and Dercum’s disease. Moreover, the U.S. FDA granted CBL-514 Fast Track Designation and Orphan Drug Designation based on the CBL-0201DD Phase 2 study results for Dercum’s disease in February 2024.

CBL-0201EFP Phase 2-stage 1 Topline Results: Significant Reductions in Cellulite Severity Across Three Dosage Groups

CBL-0201EFP Phase 2 study is an open-labeled study to evaluate the safety, tolerability, and efficacy of CBL-514 injection for the treatment of Edematous Fibrosclerotic Panniculopathy (EFP, cellulite). The efficacy was assessed using the modified Hexsel Cellulite Severity Scale (Modified HCSS), with the highest score (9) indicating the most severe cellulite severity and the lowest score (0) indicating no cellulite. The severity level of cellulite will be scored as mild (1-3), moderate (4-6), or severe (7-9), which will be determined by the total scores.

In the CBL-0201EFP Phase 2-stage 1 dose-finding study, a total of 12 participants were enrolled in 3 sequential escalating CBL-514 dose groups, 40mg, 60mg, and 80mg, to receive 1 CBL-514 treatment administered on both sides of the posterolateral thighs.

The statistical analysis revealed significant reductions in cellulite severity across three dosage groups. Follow-up assessments at 2 and 4 weeks post single treatment on both thighs showed statistically significant improvements in cellulite severity for all dosage groups, with the high-dose group of 80 mg showing the most promising efficacy, reducing cellulite severity score (mean±SD) of -2.0±0.9 points (p= 0.00049,95%CI: -2.77, -1.23) and -2.6±1.5 (p= 0.00169,95%CI: -3.88, -1.37) at 2 and 4 weeks after treatment.

CBL-0201EFP Phase 2-stage 2 Topline Results: Over 50% of Participants Demonstrated at least One Level of Improvement Among 4 Cellulite Severity Levels

In the CBL-0201EFP Phase 2-stage 2 study is a single-arm study, a total of 23 participants were enrolled to receive up to 2 CBL-514 treatments based on cellulite severity on the thighs, with a maximum single dose not exceeding 320 mg administered at 4-week intervals.

The baseline of participants’ average cellulite severity score (mean±SD) is 6.5 ± 1.0 points. Four weeks after the final CBL-514 treatment, using Modified HCSS score of 1 ~9 in 4 severity levels, there was a reduction in cellulite severity with a mean change of -1.3 ± 1.3 points (p < 0.00001, 95% CI: -1.70, -0.90), demonstrating CBL-514’s statically significant efficacy in cellulite severity improvement at both 4 weeks (p < 0.00001) and 12 weeks (p < 0.00001) after CBL-514 treatment. Moreover, over 50% of participants experienced at least one level of improvement in cellulite severity at the 12 weeks after the final CBL-514 treatment.

In addition to the primary efficacy endpoint, a secondary efficacy endpoint assessed by the Global Aesthetic Improvement Scale (GAIS) demonstrated notable improvements in cellulite. Following the final treatment, both the Principal Investigator (PI) and participants assessed over 95% of individuals as having improved cellulite appearance at the four-week mark.

The safety and tolerability profiles of CBL-514 demonstrated in both stages of the study were favorable and consistent with previous clinical studies of CBL-514. Most adverse events were mild to moderate injection site reactions, including injection site bruising, pain, swelling, and warmth, and were resolved within 28 days post-treatment.

These findings underscore the potential of CBL-514 as a highly effective treatment option for reducing cellulite severity, offering renewed confidence and satisfaction to those affected by this common cosmetic concern.

Following up, Caliway will further develop the cellulite severity scale for future CBL-514 clinical studies to evaluate cellulite improvement efficacy based on the U.S. FDA’s instruction.

About Cellulite (Edematous Fibrosclerotic Panniculopathy, EFP)

Cellulite is characterized by the nonpathological appearance of the dimpled skin surface (likened to orange peel, cottage cheese, or mattress appearance), which occurs on the thighs and buttocks. The relief alterations of cellulite include depressions and raised areas. The depressions are caused by skin retraction by subcutaneous fibrous septa, while raised areas are projections of fat and subcutaneous structures to the skin surface. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) report, around 80 to 90% of women experience cellulite dimpling.

The current treatment for cellulite includes non-invasive (medical devices and collagenase drug) and invasive options. However, their efficacy remains limited and temporary. Additionally, most products would cause significant side effects after administration, including severe bruising, pain, and hyperpigmentation, making most patients reluctant to receive them. The clinical need for cellulite treatment remains unmet. The global market for cellulite treatment is estimated to expand to $7.37 billion in 2034.

About the CBL-0201EFP Phase 2 Study

CBL-0201EFP Phase 2 study is an open-labeled study assessing the efficacy and safety of CBL-514 in participants with Edematous Fibrosclerotic Panniculopathy (EFP) cellulite. The study has an integrated design consisting of a single ascending dose (SAD) part in Stage 1 followed by a single-arm design in Stage 2.

The Stage 1 study (clinicaltrial.gov ID: NCT05632926) included a total of 12 participants enrolled in 3 sequential escalating CBL-514 dose groups, 40mg, 60mg, and 80mg. Eligible participants will be sequentially assigned to receive 1 course of allocated CBL-514 dose administered by subcutaneous injection on both sides of the posterolateral thighs.

The Stage 2 study (clinicaltrial.gov ID: NCT05836779) included a total of 23 participants enrolled in 1 selected CBL-514 dose. Eligible participants will be sequentially assigned to receive up to 2 courses of allocated CBL-514 dose administered by subcutaneous injection on both sides of the posterolateral thighs.

Open seating no more? Southwest CEO says airline is weighing cabin changes

Southwest Airlines is weighing changes to its cabin that could involve abandoning its single-class, open-seating system to drive up revenue, CEO Bob Jordan told CNBC on Thursday.

The changes would mark a massive shift for the carrier that has stood apart from rivals for decades with its simpler business model.

“We’re looking into new initiatives, things like the way we seat and board our aircraft,” Jordan said in an interview after the carrier’s disappointing first-quarter report.

Southwest’s all-Boeing 737 fleet has a single economy class cabin and no seating assignments, though it does offer earlier boarding to customers for a fee so they can snag their preferred seats. The airline has focused on keeping its product simple and user-friendly for years, aiming to keep its own costs and complexity to a minimum.

Meanwhile, rivals including Delta and United have touted high revenue growth for premium seating such as business class and strong upsell rates.

Jordan said no decisions have been made on what kind of changes Southwest will ultimately make, but he said studies have yielded “interesting” results.

“Customer preferences do change over time,” Jordan said.

More people prefer cow’s milk over plant-based milks, new Yahoo/YouGov poll finds. Here’s what nutritionists think about that.

With the never-ending debate over whether adults should be consuming milk at all, the question remains: How many grownups are still drinking it? And with the explosion of popular plant-based milks in recent years, are adults shifting their drinking habits or sticking with traditional milk? According to a new Yahoo News/YouGov poll of 1,746 U.S. adults conducted between April 11 and 15, 52% of respondents say they still drink some type of milk at least occasionally. Yet, 31% rarely or never drink any type of milk. Interestingly, whole milk and 2% cow’s milk emerged as the top choices of milk, preferred by 32% and 22% of respondents, respectively. On the other end of the spectrum, only 9% of respondents opt for plant-based milk, with 54% favoring almond milk, followed by 24% choosing oat milk.

Yahoo Life asked dietitians what they think about these results. Here’s what they had to say.

While dietitians say it’s not unexpected that more than half of adults still drink some type of milk, they were surprised that cow’s milk is much more popular than plant-based milk. As for whole milk and 2% milk being the most common milks consumed, Patricia Kolesa, dietitian and owner of Dietitian Dish LLC, tells Yahoo Life, “It is somewhat surprising with the rising popularity in plant-based milks that adults still drink [cow’s] milk.” However, she notes that this trend is understandable given regular milk remains the more affordable, accessible and convenient option in comparison.

What stands out to dietitian Megan Byrd is that 13% of people say they never drink milk. “Drinking milk to me would entail adding it to coffee and smoothies, so if asked that question, I would likely say I drink milk, but I never actually drink plain glasses of milk,” Byrd tells Yahoo Life. She notes this number might be higher if drinking milk meant consuming it by itself.

Kolesa describes milk as a “nutritional powerhouse,” which may be why more than 65% of respondents indicate they primarily drink a version of cow’s milk. Just one 8 ounce serving contains 13 essential nutrients, including 8 grams of protein, and calcium and vitamin D, which are key nutrients often low in the average American diet.

Moderate amounts of dairy overall have been shown to support bone health, reduce the risk for cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes, and contribute to improved sleep and hydration needs. And despite a common misconception that dairy causes inflammation, it actually contains many ingredients known to have anti-inflammatory properties, such as whey protein, antioxidants, probiotics and omega-3 fatty acids.

As far as cow’s milk, the only difference is “the fat content, and therefore the calories,” dietitian Heidi McIndoo tells Yahoo Life. A cup of whole milk contains 150 calories and 4.5 grams of saturated fat, while skim or nonfat milk contains only 84 calories and 0 grams of saturated fat. Opting for a lower fat option may be preferable for those trying to cut down on saturated fat or overall calories.

Dietitian Nicole Ibarra tells Yahoo Life she’s pleasantly surprised to see that 32% of respondents favor whole milk. Despite the American Heart Association recommending keeping overall intake of saturated fat to no more than 5 to 6% of daily calories, some research suggests benefits from consuming full fat dairy. One study shows that compared to low fat dairy, consuming whole fat dairy is associated with a lower incidence of high blood pressure and diabetes, as well as a reduced risk of metabolic syndrome, a group of conditions that increases your risk for heart disease and diabetes.

“Like skim milk, almond and oat milk are low in calories and saturated fats and can be great alternatives for those looking to follow a more plant-based diet,” says Kolesa. “Nutritionally, almond milk and oat milk can provide just as much calcium and vitamin D in comparison to regular milk, when fortified,” she adds.

While plant-based milks can be a great alternative for someone who cannot tolerate or dislikes dairy, they cannot be considered equal substitutes due to differences in protein content. “For those plant-milk drinkers, I’d recommend soy milk over the others,” says McIndoo. “Its nutrient profile most closely matches dairy milk, especially when compared to oat and almond milk, which are very low in protein,” she notes. However, only 12% of respondents to the poll said they prefer soy.

Although milk offers nutritional and health benefits, there are a variety of reasons why some adults don’t drink any type of milk. Of the 13% of respondents who do not drink milk, 30% express they don’t like the taste of milk, and 19% have allergy or digestive issues, such as lactose intolerance, when consuming milk. Given that as most people age they have a harder time digesting dairy products, this number appears lower than expected. In fact, about 36% of Americans and 68% of people in the world experience lactose intolerance.

As for the taste of regular milk, McIndoo tells Yahoo Life, “even though the flavor is very mild, some people might find it unappealing.” She suspects this dislike is related to the consistency, which is generally creamier than other beverages like water, tea or coffee. Additionally, the smell of milk or the fact that it’s an animal product may be a turnoff for some. Just like regular milk, flavor and consistency may also play a part in the dislike of plant-based milks, too.

If adults aren’t getting any other sources of calcium (found in foods such as yogurt and kefir) and vitamin D (found in trout, salmon and fortified orange juice), “it’s definitely a positive thing” if they’re drinking milk, Byrd says. However, she points out that if individuals are consuming other sources of vitamin D and calcium, drinking milk isn’t necessary for good health.

So while milk isn’t considered essential for a well-balanced diet, Ibarra notes that all milk variations offer valuable nutrients and can be helpful for different purposes. For example, “someone who is struggling with weight gain or is an older adult who is not very hungry may benefit by adding whole milk because it is higher in calories and can help them meet their nutritional needs,” she points out. McIndoo adds: “In addition to the refreshment and enjoyment you can get from a cold glass of milk, it is an excellent source of a variety of essential nutrients.”

Texas flight attendant reveals best travel tips for stress-free summer flights

A flight attendant based in Dallas, Texas, is revealing her favorite travel hacks as summer trips near for Americans all over the country. 

Bernice Padilla, 29, has been in the industry for six years and traveled to 44 different countries, she said. 

Over the years, she’s collected and created her own travel insights to make getting to and from vacation much easier.

“May and September are great months to travel as they’re before and after peak summer here in the U.S.,” she noted, as SWNS reported. 

The world traveler, who also runs a bucket list travel social media account, said she highly recommends booking travel in the “shoulder” seasons, such as May or September, due to low travel demands before and after the peak summer months.

There tend to be fewer crowds and “more affordable prices” while the weather stays consistent. 

“Every country has its specific shoulder season,” she said, “so I recommend doing some research before booking.”

To best avoid delays, Padilla said she recommends booking the first flight of the day to get the best chance for an on-time departure, as SWNS noted in its report.

Although that trickle-down effect can have a negative impact on afternoon or evening flights, Padilla said early-morning travel times tend not to be delayed for that reason. 

If travelers are looking to go to Europe and beyond, Padilla recommended trying to find locations abroad that aren’t the most popular.

As for packing tips, Padilla recommended using packing cubes if there’s an overpacking issue in a household. 

“I still have a problem with overpacking, but I try not to overpack as much,” she said.

The flight attendant also recommended packing only a carry-on during the summer for ease of travel. 

Padilla said she always brings along some key basics that seem obvious but are wise to remember nevertheless: a reusable water bottle, a sweater or blanket, a pen to fill out any forms needed, noise-canceling headphones and a portable charger.

The landscape of the Grand Canyon is breathtaking any time of day, but sticking around until sunset will be worth the wait.
