AFL clears troubled Geelong forward Tyson Stengle to make long-awaited return to play

The AFL has cleared troubled Geelong forward Tyson Stengle to return to play.

Under the AFL’s medical model, Stengle was not allowed to take the field for the Cats at any level as he battled a number of off-field issues.

As recently as April, the 2022 All-Australian’s career hung in the balance after he cut off all ties with his management and had little contact with anyone at Geelong.

To that point, he had spent much of the previous six months in Adelaide with a young daughter and his future was at a crossroads.

He then emerged for the first time in the Geelong rooms after the Cats’ Round 7 loss to Port Adelaide as he continued to work through his complex personal situation.

Since then, the premiership goalkicker has returned to Victoria and resumed training with the Cats, who are now hopeful he can play VFL as early as next week.

“I think the key issue here will be the conditioning of Tyson Stengle; is he fit enough to perform in a VFL match to avoid any soft tissue injuries?” Mitch Cleary said on Wednesday night’s edition of The Agenda Setters.

“Don’t forget, he had an interrupted pre-season, he came back, he went away again. So this has been an interrupted build-up for Tyson. They are going to want to make sure that when he does return, he’s bullet-proof in terms of his body.”

Nick Riewoldt said if ever there was a club who could navigate a complex situation like Stengle’s, it’s Geelong.

“Geelong have been the masters of managing players like this, and you are afforded that luxury when you have the record that Geelong do,” he said.

“You bank wins and there’s an important aspect of getting players cherry-ripe for finals. We’ve seen them do it with Dangerfield.

“So, that is good news. He makes them better. They just want him to come in and then stay in.”

At Collingwood, a similar narrative is unfolding at the time.

The Magpies’ 2023 Norm Smith medallist Bobby Hill, who, like Stengle, has also had significant time away from the club in recent months, is finally eyeing a return to play.

Hill appeared close to a return early last month before taking another period of leave, but re-emerged back at training on Wednesday.

“Great to see him back at training today. He was given a three-week leave of absence after the birth of his third child,” Cleary said.

“Collingwood’s been incredibly accommodating around Bobby Hill, but I understand there were conversations last week held between Bobby and key figures at the Collingwood footy club that Bobby essentially interpreted it as, ‘I need to get back and I’m running out of time’.

“Great to see him back today because if that didn’t occur, I think there would have been conversations to be had in future weeks around his contract.”

Cleary stopped short of calling it “an ultimatum” given to him by Collingwood, “But I think Bobby got the sense that, ‘If I don’t get back in the short-term, I’m running out of time to have an impact in season 2026’,” he said.

Riewoldt added: “He definitely makes them better. They’d be desperate for him to come back into a sputtering forward line.

“He’s banked a lot of credits and he would have with his teammates through his on-field performance.

“Would they be reaching a point now where there’s a level of frustration? There have been a lot of false starts here.”

Tom Morris: “Yeah, for sure. And there has been at Geelong as well with Tyson Stengle, there was last year with Jamara Ugle-Hagan, there was at Melbourne with Clayton Oliver as well.

“There’s no doubt players want Bobby Hill back in the team, but they’ve been frustrated because there’s a belief that he’s been a little bit unreliable across the journey, which I don’t think is too controversial to say.”

Cleary: “You say some players want him back. — there are also some players that want to see a level of trust built up still with Bobby Hill.

“Three weeks away for Bobby Hill from the footy club. He was just building up his fitness before he took this latest leave. So I think that’s going to reset now. He’s going to have to go again for a month in the VFL before he puts his name up for AFL selection.”

Essendon face ‘soft cap’ question as Brad Scott’s payout details emerge

0

Questions are suddenly being asked around Essendon’s “soft cap” management after it has come to light that the embattled club will pay out sacked coach Brad Scott in full this year.

The revelation comes after CEO Tim Roberts confirmed last week that the club could manage the financial impact of Scott’s departure, despite widespread concerns about soft cap pressures at Essendon, and across the competition.

WATCH THE VIDEO ABOVE: Essendon’s Brad Scott payout under scrutiny

Know the news with the 7NEWS app: Download today Arrow

Scott, who was thought to be earning between $800,000 and $1 million annually, will receive the payment for the remainder of this season which, importantly for Essendon’s next coach, means it won’t impact the soft cap in 2027.

“And the AFL have agreed that all that money will go into their soft cap this year,” veteran journalist Caroline Wilson said on Channel 7’s The Agenda Setters.

However, questions have been raised about how a struggling Essendon could have such a significant amount available in their soft cap (the money clubs can spend on their football department operations, including coaches, list managers, and fitness staff), when other clubs are reporting severe financial constraints.

AFL great Luke Hodge said it was impossible to fathom how Essendon could have “a spare million dollars” to pay Scott’s salary into this year’s soft cap.

“Did they go with less staff (this year)?” asked Hodge, while Collingwood premiership hero Dale Thomas asked, “Who are they paying there?”

AFL expert Kane Cornes said Essendon needed to explain themselves.

“If they have $800,000 spare at a struggling club, which could be (spent on) two development coaches, it could be a masseuse, it could be another doctor … with their injury list …. what are they doing? How could it not be spent?” Cornes asked.

“Now, I might be overreacting here, but I think at least the Bombers need to explain to their supporters how there could be, when clubs are screaming about how tight this is, how assistant coaches are underpaid, a spare $800,000 to $1 million that they can just hand a cheque to Brad Scott for doing nothing?

“We look forward to the explanation.”

The club has not confirmed whether welfare boss Ben Robbins and assistant coach Ben Jacobs, who both departed following Scott’s sacking, have been paid out for the remainder of the year.

If they resigned of their own volition, they may not be entitled to payouts.

“So there’s a chance that they are not getting paid at all because, of course, they quit,” Wilson said.

“Now, my gut feeling is that Essendon might have looked after them. I’m not 100 per cent sure. I don’t know. But remember, Andrew Dillon has made significant changes to the soft cap in the last two or three years. It has gone up, and it has gone up quite significantly.”

But Cornes said Jacobs would not be “getting paid a lot” and Robbins would not be on big dollars either.

But Wilson said it made sense Essendon had room in the soft cap given they could not lure Ken Hinkley to the club for a director of coaching role, and experienced assistant Daniel Giansiracusa left at the end of the 2025 season and joined Hawthorn.

“They weren’t able to replace him, really, with someone of his senior assistant coaching pedigree, so there are savings right there,” Wilson said.

Stream The Agenda Setters live or watch anytime on-demand at 7plus

“They looked at bringing in another senior football person. That didn’t happen. Has there been a deal done behind the scenes with the AFL? No one is admitting that, and maybe that’s happened, but I’m not sure the AFL would be super keen on that happening, although they clearly want to try and help Essendon get up again.

“All I’m saying is, next year, there is plenty of money to bring in someone like John Longmire, and I believe he is very much on that club’s radar, and the rest is history.”

The arrangement with Scott differs significantly from Sydney’s situation when Longmire resigned at the end of last season.

The Swans were forced to include some of Longmire’s payment in the following year’s soft cap, leaving them with a threadbare assistant coaching group of just three coaches.

NYB.AI Launches Vecura 2.0, Bringing Agentic AI Workflows to Molecular Discovery, with NVIDIA

0

TAIPEI, June 2, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Life science research is entering an AI era, but most discovery teams still cannot use frontier models at scale. Advanced AI models, molecular simulation tools, scientific databases, inference optimization and GPU infrastructure remain fragmented across separate systems. For many pharmaceutical companies, ingredient innovators, biotech teams, and research groups, this makes AI adoption slow, costly, and technically demanding.

Agentic AI for scientific execution. Vecura 2.0 moves beyond simple prompts and responses into autonomous scientific coordination.
Agentic AI for scientific execution. Vecura 2.0 moves beyond simple prompts and responses into autonomous scientific coordination.

NYB.AI, a Singapore Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology startup developing infrastructure for molecular discovery and life science research, aims to address this gap with Vecura, its agentic AI platform that connects scientific models, biological data, molecular analysis tools, and GPU accelerated computing into a unified discovery workflow.

Vecura 2.0 builds on the original Vecura 1.0 platform, which provided access to AI models and scientific tools for molecular discovery. With the new agentic layer, Vecura 2.0 moves beyond tool access toward workflow execution. It is designed to help research teams define scientific objectives, retrieve relevant context, activate suitable models, compare outputs, and generate structured decision support with less manual coordination.

From model access to agentic workflows

Vecura was built around a simple premise: the next barrier in AI for science is not access to more models. It is the ability to make those models work together in discovery settings. The original Vecura platform brought hundreds of AI models, scientific tools, biological data, and molecular analysis capabilities into connected workflows, helping research teams move across compound analysis, target exploration, formulation research, toxicity assessment, and translational R&D without relying on separate systems at every step.

Vecura 2.0 extends this foundation with an agentic AI layer. The upgraded platform is designed to reason across the workflow by understanding research objectives, retrieving relevant scientific context, selecting suitable models, coordinating execution, comparing outputs, and generating structured next step recommendations. This evolves Vecura from a workflow platform into a more intelligent discovery system that can assist scientists at scale, closer to how real research decisions are made.

This agentic approach allows scientists to focus on research direction rather than infrastructure management. It also supports NYB.AI’s broader vision to democratize molecular discovery by making advanced AI models, scientific tools, and GPU intensive workflows more accessible to teams beyond large pharmaceutical organizations and specialized computational labs.

Scaling access through NVIDIA technologies

NYB.AI is strengthening Vecura’s agentic architecture for scientific discovery using NVIDIA technologies. As a member of the NVIDIA Inception program for startups, NYB.AI received access to NVIDIA Hopper GPUs through NVIDIA Innovation Lab, along with engineering guidance to advance Vecura’s ability to plan, execute, and coordinate complex research tasks. This support enables Vecura to move beyond isolated model execution toward connected workflows where scientific context, model selection, inference, comparison, and decision support operate as one system.

Vecura is powered by NVIDIA technologies spanning agentic orchestration, scientific modeling, data and retrieval, and production deployment – all running on NVIDIA accelerated computing.

NYB.AI is also developing a token based access model for Vecura 2.0. Through platform credits, biopharma companies, ingredient companies, and research teams can access AI powered discovery workflows such as compound screening, bioactivity prediction, and molecular docking. This model allows users to run compute intensive scientific tasks through NYB.AI’s platform without needing to build or operate their own infrastructure.

What’s next?

NYB.AI is bringing Vecura 2.0 to the NVIDIA Inception Startup Showcase at the Inception Pavilion during InnoVEX 2026 (June 2–5, 2026, Taipei Nangang Exhibition Center). The showcase will give NYB.AI an opportunity to validate Vecura 2.0 with enterprise leaders, investors, ecosystem partners, and international buyers, and strengthens its visibility within NVIDIA Inception ecosystem — demonstrating how agentic AI can move beyond model experimentation into usable research infrastructure for molecular discovery teams.

At InnoVEX 2026, NYB.AI will demonstrate how Vecura 2.0 can support molecular discovery and life science research across pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, cosmetics, food science, functional ingredients, and consumer health. The platform reflects NYB.AI’s broader mission to make advanced AI discovery infrastructure more usable, scalable, and accessible across the life science ecosystem.

About NYB.AI

NYB.AI is an AI biotechnology company developing infrastructure for molecular discovery and life science research. Its flagship platform, Vecura, is an agentic AI platform that connects AI models, scientific tools, biological data, retrieval systems, accelerated computing, and autonomous workflows to help life science teams shorten discovery cycles and prioritize high-potential candidates.

3billion Launches 3B-NEO, a Genomic Newborn Screening Service Covering 595 Clinically Actionable Genetic Conditions

0
  • Screens 595 carefully selected genes associated with childhood-onset conditions where early intervention may improve outcomes
  • Designed for maternity hospitals, obstetrics practices, newborn care providers, pediatric clinics and families seeking earlier genetic insights from birth
  • Expands 3billion’s precision medicine platform from rare disease diagnosis into proactive newborn health management

SEOUL, South Korea and AUSTIN, Texas, June 1, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — 3billion, a global AI-powered genomic diagnostics company, today announced the launch of 3B-NEO, a premium genomic newborn screening (gNBS) service designed to identify genetic risks before symptoms appear and support earlier medical intervention.

3billion's 3B-NEO — Comprehensive Genetic Screening for Newborns. (Photo: 3billion)
3billion’s 3B-NEO — Comprehensive Genetic Screening for Newborns. (Photo: 3billion)

3B-NEO was developed in response to growing demand from international healthcare providers and global partners as genomic newborn screening gains momentum worldwide. The service is intended for all newborns and clinically actionable genetic insights focused on conditions where early medical intervention, monitoring, or treatment may meaningfully improve outcomes. Rather than expanding the number of genes analyzed, 3B-NEO was designed to prioritize actionable findings that can support real-world clinical decision-making for physicians and families.

Traditional newborn screening programs primarily rely on biochemical markers and typically assess a limited number of conditions. In contrast, 3B-NEO analyzes 595 carefully selected genes associated with serious childhood-onset disorders where treatment, monitoring, or medical management may improve outcomes. By identifying genetic risks before symptoms emerge, the test can support earlier diagnosis, proactive monitoring, and timely intervention.

The 595 genes panel focuses on conditions that are likely to present during childhood and may benefit from early medical action. These include inherited metabolic disorders, immunologic disorders, neuromuscular diseases, cardiovascular conditions, and other clinically significant pediatric genetic disorders. The service was designed to prioritize actionable information over exhaustive genetic findings, enabling healthcare providers to focus on risks that may influence patient management during infancy and early childhood.

3B-NEO is available in two testing options: a Whole Exome Sequencing (WES)-based standard test and a Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS)-based premium test. Results are typically delivered within approximately two weeks after sample receipt.

The service is designed for hospitals, obstetrics practices, pediatric clinics and families seeking earlier genetic insights for newborns. Healthcare providers can offer 3B-NEO without establishing in-house genomic testing infrastructure, while parents may request testing through participating healthcare providers subject to clinical review and approval.

As genomic newborn screening continues to gain clinical validation through large-scale research initiatives and pilot programs in the United States, Europe, and other regions, demand for earlier genetic risk assessment is growing. 3billion plans to collaborate with healthcare providers globally, including markets where access to advanced genetic testing remains limited but the need for early diagnosis and preventive healthcare continues to increase.

“Genomic newborn screening creates the greatest value when it enables action before symptoms appear,” said Changwon Keum, CEO of 3billion. “Advances in genomic medicine are making it increasingly possible to identify health risks early and prepare appropriate medical interventions before irreversible complications develop. Through 3B-NEO, we aim to help healthcare providers and families make earlier, more informed decisions that can improve long-term health outcomes.”

The launch of 3B-NEO represents an important step in expanding 3billion’s precision medicine platform beyond rare disease diagnosis and into proactive genomic healthcare across the life cycle.

Founded in 2016, 3billion provides AI-powered genomic interpretation and rare disease diagnostic services to healthcare professionals in more than 75 countries and over 800 partner institutions worldwide. The company is expanding its global precision medicine platform from diagnosis toward therapeutic discovery and development.

As part of its U.S. growth strategy, 3billion established its U.S. subsidiary in Austin, Texas, and is preparing local laboratory operations to further support healthcare providers and patients across the United States.

About 3billion

3billion is a global precision medicine company specializing in AI-powered genomic interpretation and rare disease diagnostics. Archaeologists uncover ‘mysterious’ ancient tunnel near biblical Kingdom of Judah site in Jerusalem

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Excavators recently uncovered a “mysterious and impressive” ancient tunnel in Jerusalem, not far from archaeological sites tied to the biblical Kingdom of Judah.

The discovery was announced by the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) in a May 14 statement.

The tunnel was found near Kibbutz Ramat Rachel, an archaeological site tied to the biblical-era Kingdom of Judah, according to previous IAA excavations.

TOURISTS WALK PILGRIMAGE ROAD FROM JESUS’ ERA FOR FIRST TIME IN 2,000 YEARS: ‘DEEPLY SIGNIFICANT’

The rock-hewn tunnel is about 164 feet long and was found ahead of construction on a new residential neighborhood north of Ramat Rachel.

The tunnel is around 16 feet tall and roughly 10 feet wide — and officials note that the rock-cutting “was executed meticulously.”

The newly discovered underground passage was found during excavations ahead of construction near Kibbutz Ramat Rachel in Jerusalem. (Israel Antiquities Authority)

“The tunnel itself was discovered filled with layers of soil that had accumulated over hundreds, perhaps even thousands, of years,” the IAA said.

“It is clear that whoever carved this tunnel invested tremendous effort [and] careful planning, and possessed the capabilities and resources necessary to achieve this goal.”

FORBIDDEN PASSAGE? SECRET MEDIEVAL TUNNEL FOUND BENEATH ANCIENT PAGAN GRAVES, ARCHAEOLOGISTS SAY

Excavation directors Sivan Mizrahi and Zinovi Matskevich told the IAA the discovery was unexpected.

“We were excavating in relatively rocky and exposed terrain when suddenly we discovered a natural karstic cavity,” the pair said in a joint statement.

“To our amazement, as the excavation progressed, this cavity developed into a long tunnel. Parts of it are still collapsed, so the tunnel has not yet revealed all of its secrets.”

“Usually we have explanations for the discoveries we uncover, but sometimes, as in this case, we stand astonished and amazed.”

In 2020, IAA excavations near Ramat Rachel revealed seal impressions and structures tied to the Kingdom of Judah, indicating that “governmental activity took place in the area,” the organization said at the time.

No evidence that’s been uncovered so far, however, directly connects the newly discovered tunnel to the Kingdom of Judah or the biblical era — and the age of the tunnel is unknown.

“The tunnel lies only a few hundred meters, as the crow flies, from two significant ancient sites — a public building from the Iron Age (First Temple period) in the Arnona neighborhood, and Tel Ramat Rachel, where settlement remains dating from the Iron Age through the Islamic period have been documented,” Mizrahi and Matskevich said.

Evidence found inside the tunnel points to extensive planning and significant labor investment, said the Israel Antiquities Authority.  (Israel Antiquities Authority)

Though the purpose of the tunnel remains unclear, researchers theorize it may have been carved to reach a chalk layer used for quarrying building stones or producing lime.

“Possible evidence supporting this interpretation includes a shaft carved into the tunnel’s ceiling, which may have been used for ventilation, as well as quarrying debris discovered on the tunnel floor — although this interpretation, too, remains uncertain,” the IAA said.

Experts have ruled out the possibility that the tunnel was part of an ancient water system, and some posit the site may have been abandoned before construction was completed.

“Alternatively, the findings may indicate that the quarrying and construction of the tunnel were never completed, and therefore its intended purpose and nature remain unknown,” the IAA says.

Amit Re’em, a Jerusalem district archaeologist at the IAA, said the find “joins many others being uncovered every day, hour by hour, throughout the city.”

“The archaeologists and researchers of the Israel Antiquities Authority are constantly at work, because this city never ceases to surprise,” said Re’em.

Fremantle star Caleb Serong called out for ‘bizarre’ decision to travel to Brisbane while injured

Channel 7 commentator Kane Cornes has taken aim at Fremantle star Caleb Serong for a “bizarre” decision to travel with the team to Brisbane over the weekend.

Serong is nursing a calf injury and din’t play in the club’s 11th-straight win, but was an interested onlooker in the stands at the Gabba.

The Dockers are flying at the top of the ladder with their only loss coming way back in Round 1 against Geelong.

Serong has been enjoying another brilliant season until a calf injury sidelined him on the eve of the Round 11 clash against St Kilda.

The star midfielder is hoping to return for this week’s clash against North Melbourne.

But Cornes couldn’t understand why he would go with his teammates on a nine-hour round trip.

“What’s he doing? I like the fact that he’s invested in the group. Great leader. Can’t fault him. But let’s be smart about this,” Cornes said on The Agenda Setters.

“You’ve got a premiership to win. Why are you on a plane for nine hours return, 7,000km over, and going to watch in the stands, Frio beat up on Brisbane? What was the use of that?

“Now, they complain about travel all the time, ‘we travel so much, this is unfair’. They’ve tried to argue to sell some home games so they can have more games at home. And he’s travelling with a calf injury.

“Is that your best preparation?”

Fellow commentator Nick Riewoldt suggested there must have been a reason for it.

“Unless there was a specialist or someone that he saw in Brisbane or that all the fitness staff were leaving,” he said.

“People go to Germany for that sort of stuff all the time.”

But Cornes wasn’t having it, summing up the situation with one word: “Bizarre.”

The Dockers couldn’t be better placed to breakthrough for their maiden premiership at the halfway point of the season.

They are sitting a game clear on top of the ladder with a 11-1 record and could get even better, according to coach Justin Longmuir.

“They haven’t been playing as well as they could, so we knew there was a few chinks in the armour,” Longmuir said after Saturday’s victory.

“The players were able to execute, not for 120 minutes, because it got a bit dicey there in the last quarter when they got on top and threw caution to the wind, but like we do every week, we prepare for the opposition strengths and lay out some opportunities for our boys, and I thought we executed both pretty well.

“I’m really proud of the group, and really proud of where we sit, obviously in the season, and then the type of footy we’re playing.

“I would feel like we’ve got more in us.”

As well as Serong, the Dockers will be hoping to welcome back star midfielder Hayden Young, who has missed the past two matches with concussion.
