Cruise companies cancel Puerto Vallarta stops after violence in Mexico

American travel companies are scrambling to reroute cruise ships and take care of tourists to Mexico after violence and chaos erupted in several coastal regions in the country following the killing of a cartel leader.

The U.S. State Department broadened its warning to travelers to shelter in place across multiple regions of Mexico, including the popular tourist hot spots of Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Cozumel, Tulum, Tijuana and Puerto Vallarta.

Violence erupted after the Mexican army killed Jalisco New Generation Cartel leader Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes. Known as “El Mencho,” he led one of fastest-growing criminal networks in Mexico, notorious for trafficking fentanyl, methamphetamine and cocaine to the United States and staging brazen attacks against government officials who challenged it, The Associated Press reported.

As roads were blockaded with burning vehicles, airlines canceled flights and cruise lines rerouted ships to avoid ports with potential problems.

Carnival Corp. said Princess Cruises’ Royal Princess and Holland America Line’s Zuiderdam were bypassing their planned stops in Puerto Vallarta on Monday. Norwegian Cruise Line said its ship the Norwegian Bliss has canceled its plans to call on Puerto Vallarta on Wednesday.

MSC Cruises USA said sailings to Cozumel and Costa Maya, Mexico, are currently operating as planned, but that shore excursions may be adjusted or canceled.

Though Royal Caribbean said it doesn’t have ships currently in the affected areas, CNBC has learned some of its excursions in Ensenada, Mexico, were affected.

Airbnb told CNBC it had activated its “major disruptive events policy” in Jalisco state and other affected regions. That policy overrides the host’s individual cancellation policy, allowing travelers and hosts to cancel reservations without consequences.

“We are monitoring this situation carefully and are focused on supporting guests and hosts in impacted areas,” an Airbnb spokesperson said.

In a note to investors, Truist travel and leisure analyst Patrick Scholes wrote that Hyatt has the most exposure of the international brands, with 8.5% of its room total coming from Mexico. Marriott has the second-highest exposure, with 3.3% of its overall rooms coming from Mexico.

Typical travel insurance policies often carry exclusions for terrorism, political violence or civil unrest.

Squaremouth, an online marketplace for travel insurance, warned would-be travelers that “the violence in Mexico is now a foreseeable event, or what the insurance industry calls a known event. So tourists can’t buy coverage now in order to cancel their trip.”

However, a Squaremouth spokesperson told CNBC, “If you are heading to Mexico soon, especially during spring break, buying CFAR [cancel for any reason] or IFAR [interruption for any reason] as add-ons is a smart decision given the uncertainty.”

SEOUL, South Korea, Feb. 24, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Daesang announced on the 23rd that it successfully concluded its first participation in the “Supermarket Trade Show 2026 (SMTS 2026),” Japan’s largest food and retail exhibition, held for three days from February 18 to 20 in Chiba Prefecture, Japan.

Daesang Successfully Concludes First Participation at Japan’s Largest Retail Trade Show, “SMTS 2026,” Showcasing the Excellence of K-Fermented Foods

Hosted by the New Supermarket Association of Japan, SMTS 2026 is the country’s largest specialized exhibition for the food and retail industry, offering a comprehensive view of the latest trends in the Japanese distribution sector. Celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, the exhibition recorded its largest scale ever, with approximately 2,200 companies from 16 countries participating and around 83,000 visitors in attendance.

Marking its first appearance at the event, Daesang highlighted its No.1* kimchi brand “Jongga” and global food brand “O’food,” successfully promoting its differentiated K-food competitiveness rooted in advanced fermentation technology and reinforcing its position as Korea’s leading comprehensive food company.

During the exhibition, Daesang’s booth attracted approximately 10,000 visitors, drawing significant attention. The company held business meetings with representatives from major Japanese retailers and regional supermarket chains, including AEON, Costco, and Ministop. Amid strong interest from global retail buyers, Daesang engaged in detailed discussions toward new supply agreements, achieving tangible business outcomes.

Products showcasing the expertise of one of the world’s leading fermentation specialists garnered particular attention, especially kimchi and traditional Korean sauces. As Japan’s kimchi consumption trend shifts from non-fermented to fermented varieties, distributors expressed strong interest in listing “Ilpum Kimchi,” which delivers the authentic taste of traditional Korean fermented kimchi. In addition, “O’food Gochujang,” crafted using traditional methods inherited from Sunchang—the birthplace of Korean jang (fermented sauces)—also drew keen interest.

The tasting program, designed to reflect local food culture trends, proved to be a major highlight. Under the concept of “Delica” foods—ready-to-eat and ready-to-cook items that are increasingly popular in Japanese supermarkets—Daesang introduced four trendy menu items utilizing kimchi and gochujang: Stir-fried Kimchi Egg Gimbap, Water Parsley Gochujang Shrimp Gangjeong, Kimchi Tuna Mayo Sandwich, and Gochujang Nikujaga. These dishes demonstrated how kimchi and gochujang can easily enhance umami flavors in everyday meals. All 2,400 servings of the four featured tasting menus were completely sold out, along with an additional 2,600 servings of Mat Kimchi and Dubu Kimchi prepared for sampling.

Chiharu Asao, a Japanese food influencer who developed the tasting menu, commented, “We created a fusion dish by adding kimchi to tamagoyaki, a familiar Japanese egg dish, ensuring that the spiciness and umami of Ilpum Kimchi harmonize with the soft texture of the egg. Although some visitors were initially unfamiliar with the idea of kimchi in a sandwich, they were pleasantly surprised by how well the flavors complemented each other after tasting it.”

The booth, designed to embody Daesang’s corporate vision, also drew significant attention. Featuring a distinctive design inspired by tree rings, a large LED screen, and a space replicating a Japanese supermarket display, the booth stood out prominently within the exhibition hall. Brochures and tasting containers incorporating traditional Korean mother-of-pearl craftsmanship further conveyed the company’s dedication and authenticity in fermented foods.

Visitors shared positive feedback, commenting, “The red booth design reminiscent of kimchi was impressive,” “The mother-of-pearl design elegantly captured Korean aesthetics,” and “The harmony with Japanese cuisine exceeded expectations,” adding to the vibrant atmosphere on site.

Lim Jung-bae, CEO of Daesang Corporation, stated, “Our participation in SMTS 2026 served as an important opportunity to reaffirm the status of fermented foods—the core of K-food—in the Japanese market and to expand our local distribution network. Moving forward, we will continue to introduce innovative products tailored to the lifestyles of local consumers, led by Jongga and O’food, to further strengthen our presence in Japan.”

Founded 70 years ago, Daesang has been strengthening its global competitiveness. The company established Daesang Japan Inc. in 1978 to formally enter the Japanese market. Currently, it exports a wide range of products, including kimchi, seasonings, traditional sauces, sauces, and ready-to-eat meals. In 2023, it established Daesang Foods Japan Inc. to secure local production capabilities. In addition, last year the company hosted the “Kimchi Blast Tokyo 2025” pop-up event on Cat Street in Shibuya, Tokyo, blending Korean kimchi culture with Japanese lifestyle trends and expanding consumer engagement in the local market.

Airlines cancel thousands of flights as blizzard cripples East Coast airports

A powerful blizzard ground air travel to a near halt at major airports serving New York City, Boston, Philadelphia and other areas of the eastern U.S. on Monday. Disruptions are set to last through at least Tuesday, again testing carriers on how quickly they can recover at the tail end of winter break.

Much of the East Coast from Maryland to Maine was under a blizzard warning, with heavy snow already totaling nearly 2 feet in parts of New Jersey and on Long Island, New York. High wind gusts are expected to last throughout the day, the National Weather Service said. The weather service warned that travel will be treacherous, with blowing snow causing low visibility.

More than 4,900 U.S. departures Monday, or close to 20% of the total scheduled U.S. departures, were canceled, as of 4:10 p.m. ET, according to aviation data firm Cirium. Daily cancellations usually run around 1% of the day’s schedule. Nearly a quarter of the inbound international flights were also canceled.

More than 1,000 departures and arrivals in and out of New York’s LaGuardia Airport, more than 90% of the day’s schedule, were canceled Monday. More than 90% of the flights at Boston Logan International Airport and more than 80% of the flights at Philadelphia International Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey were also scrubbed.

On Tuesday, 1,576 flights had already been canceled, around 7% of the daily schedule, Cirium said. Around half of the departures at Kennedy Airport, LaGuardia and Boston were canceled for Tuesday.

American Airlines said operations at the those three airports are set to resume on Tuesday, adding that flights have already resumed at Philadelphia and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.

Airlines routinely cancel flights ahead of major storms to avoid having aircraft and crews out of place and to make it easier to restart operations after the storm passes.

American, Delta Air Lines, JetBlue Airways, Spirit Airlines and United Airlines waived fees and fare differences for passengers if they can travel later this week, though some flexible rebooking policies are in place until March 4. Southwest Airlines said customers are eligible for a change without paying a difference in fare if they can rebook to fly or fly standby within two weeks.

The winter storm that hit much of the East Coast in January and was followed by bitter cold caused mass travel disruptions across a large swath of the U.S.

American had struggled to recover, drawing harsh criticism from flight crews, some of whom were stranded and had to sleep at airports, heightening tension between front-line employees and the company’s CEO, Robert Isom.

The storm cost American between $150 million and $200 million in revenue, the carrier said last month on an earnings call.

Uber acquiring parking app SpotHero as it moves beyond ride-hailing and food delivery

Uber said it’s acquiring SpotHero, a company that provides a parking reservation app for crowded downtowns, sporting events and concerts.

Terms weren’t disclosed, but Uber said on Monday that it plans to offer a “parking reservation experience, powered by SpotHero” within its own app to help users find parking for events, venues and airports.

“For the moments when people do choose to drive, SpotHero on the Uber app will make the experience easier than ever, and bring more people into the Uber ecosystem,” Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said in a statement.

Earlier this month, Uber reported better-than-expected revenue for the fourth-quarter but issued soft profit guidance for the current period, sending the stock down. The company’s strongest revenue growth for the quarter was in its delivery business, which started with restaurants and now includes groceries and retail.

Uber’s expansion into new markets and geographies has turned into the dominant U.S. ride-hailing company. Its market cap currently sits at $146 billion, while Lyft is valued at just over $5 billion. Within food delivery, Uber faces stout competition from companies including DoorDash, which has a market cap of over $71 billion.

SpotHero last announced outside funding in 2019, when it raised $50 million in a round led by Macquarie Capital. The Chicago-based company launched in 2011, and now says it offers parking at more than 13,000 garages, lots and valets in over 400 cities in the U.S. and Canada.

“Joining forces with Uber will allow us to bring that experience to millions more drivers and make parking a natural part of the Uber platform,” SpotHero CEO Mark Lawrence said in a statement.

Uber said the acquisition is subject to regulatory approval and is expected to close in the first half of this year.

Mexico beach recently crowned best in world as cartels now torch businesses, terrorize tourist areas

Following an operation that killed the leader of the Jalisco New Generation cartel, Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, “El Mencho,” a revolt broke out in Mexico by cartel members — causing chaos across popular tourist areas in the country Sunday.

The U.S. State Department has issued shelter in place orders while airlines have canceled flights due to ongoing unrest.

As the violence plays out, Tripadvisor recently announced the “2026 Travelers’ Choice Awards: Best of the Best Beaches” — naming the top beach in Mexico.

Isla Pasion beach in Cozumel, Mexico, took the No. 1 spot after the firm analyzed millions of traveler reviews from last year. It released the news about the beach Feb. 17.

The beach was touted for being a private island oasis and offering crystal-clear waters, marine life encounters and snorkeling opportunities.

The travel guidance platform noted the best time to visit the island is between November and April.

Isla Pasion has unique features such as protected coral reefs and sea turtle nesting sites — and is an exclusive day-trip destination.

“U.S. citizens in a number of locations in Mexico are urged to shelter in place.”

Other beaches named in the top five were Elafonissi Beach in Crete, Greece; Balos Lagoon in Kissamos, Greece; Eagle Beach in Eagle Beach, Aruba; and Praia da Falésia in Algarve, Portugal.

Isla Pasion is located in the state of Quintana Roo — listed in a slew of travel alerts issued by the U.S. State Department on Sunday, which cited “ongoing security operations.”

“U.S. citizens in a number of locations in Mexico are urged to shelter in place,” the latest alert read.

Cartel members are terrorizing many regions by setting fire to businesses and with gunfire in public areas.

The latest travel advisories in Mexico marked the country as a “Level 2 – Exercise increased caution” — with other areas marked as a “Level 3 – Reconsider travel” and “Level 4 – Do not travel” on Aug. 12, 2025.

The advisory levels remain unchanged.

“Exercise increased caution in Mexico due to terrorism, crime and kidnapping,” the advisory says.

Crimes listed in Mexico include homicide, kidnapping, carjacking, robbery and terrorist violence.

“There is a risk of violence in the state from terrorist groups, cartels, gangs and criminal organizations. Shootings between rival gangs have injured and killed innocent bystanders,” reads the advisory.

Travelmation travel advisor Brady Alumbaugh told Fox News Digital that tourists taking trips to Mexico should “be aware of [their] surroundings and trust [their] instincts.”

He added, “If you’re getting a strange gut feeling, pay attention to that and react accordingly.”

Alumbaugh also suggested traveling in groups of two or more. “The more people, the better,” he said.

“Would You Clone Yourself for a Cure?” Clonell Unveils White Paper on Fundamental Cures for 34 Incurable Diseases Using ‘Human Cloning’ Technology

0

Harnessing the vitality of a clone while neutralizing ethical controversies through a breakthrough ‘Therapeutic Cloning’ protocol—ushering in a new era of regenerative medicine to conquer cancer, Alzheimer’s, and aging.

YONGIN, South Korea, Feb. 23, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Human cloning has long been a subject of dystopian science fiction and a stringent ethical taboo. However, Clonell Therapeutics, Inc., a cutting-edge biotechnology company, is actively shaking the landscape of regenerative medicine by bringing this powerful, historically controversial technology into the clinical setting in an entirely ethical and legal form.

Pioneering the clinical application of human cloning technology, Clonell today officially released a comprehensive therapeutic white paper on its global website (https://www.clonell.com). The white paper details ultimate treatment protocols for 34 conditions currently classified as incurable diseases. The medical community’s attention is highly focused, as the target diseases encompass not only Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and myocardial infarction, but also cancer and even aging itself.

How can a single technology target such a broad spectrum of diseases simultaneously? According to Clonell’s white paper, the answer lies in precisely targeting ‘Cellular Senescence’—the common underlying culprit behind modern diseases. Moving beyond the limitations of conventional medicine, which has primarily focused on symptom management and suppressing disease progression, Clonell’s approach envisions completely replacing the old, diseased cells that comprise failing organs with young, healthy cells from the patients themselves.

The crucial challenge has always been how to generate these miraculous cells. Here, Clonell has played its most unconventional and transformative card: ‘Human Cloning.’ Cells generated through human cloning technology are a 100% genetic match to the patient, resulting in zero immune rejection. Simultaneously, their biological age is reset to ‘zero,’ granting them the explosive regenerative power observed only in the earliest stages of life. A therapeutic agent satisfying both of these critical conditions has never existed in the history of regenerative medicine.

Dr. Hyo-Sang Lee, currently the Chief Scientific Officer at Clonell and a key protagonist of the Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) research team that successfully established the world’s first SCNT-hESCs (Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer-derived Human Embryonic Stem Cells, the original paper) from a cloned human embryo in 2013, stated:

“To fundamentally cure diseased organs, we require cells that our body’s immune system will not reject, while also possessing a youthful vigor strong enough to rebuild the damaged organ. However, apart from human cloning technology, no existing treatment has been able to satisfy both conditions simultaneously. Until now, medicine has always been forced to choose one or the other. The reason degenerative diseases, including aging, have remained unconquered is simply that the cells capable of solving this core dilemma did not exist.”

Does this mean Clonell is creating human clones? Not at all. Clonell’s cloned cells begin with SCNT, the core technology of human cloning, where a patient’s somatic cell is fused with an enucleated oocyte to create a cloned embryo. However, instead of transferring this cloned embryo into a surrogate to create a fully formed human clone—a method known as ‘Reproductive Cloning’—Clonell utilizes a ‘Therapeutic Cloning’ approach. The company extracts cells from the blastocyst after culturing it in a laboratory for seven days. Ultimately, this is a highly intelligent strategy: safely capturing the perfect biocompatibility and biological age-zero vitality of a clone, without ever creating a living, breathing human organism.

Dr. Lee further emphasized, “We have finally found the master key to harness the explosive vitality equivalent to that of a human clone for patient treatment, while strictly adhering to all bioethical standards. Human cloning technology is no longer science fiction or an ethical taboo. It is a highly effective, practical medical tool for fighting incurable diseases and represents the most perfect biological cure humanity has ever dreamed of.”

Detailed disease-specific treatment protocols and mechanisms for the 34 incurable diseases proposed by Clonell are now available to the public and scientific community on the official website (https://www.clonell.com).

DHS abruptly reverses suspension of TSA PreCheck

0

The Transportation Security Administration said on Sunday that its PreCheck airport screening lanes are operational, an about-face hours after the Department of Homeland Security said the faster security checkpoints were paused amid the partial government shutdown.

Travel industry leaders said they received little, if any, warning of the changes to PreCheck, a program that allows its 20 million pre-screened members to pass through airport security faster than at standard lanes. Industry members spoke with DHS officials in the past few hours and expressed alarm about the sudden decision, people familiar with the matter said.

“At this time, TSA PreCheck remains operational with no change for the traveling public,” TSA officials said in a statement. “As staffing constraints arise, TSA will evaluate on a case by case basis and adjust operations accordingly. Courtesy escorts, such as those for Members of Congress, have been suspended to allow officers to focus on the mission of securing America’s skies.”

The agency said that “until funding is restored, all travelers should expect a process that does not sacrifice security. ”

DHS early Sunday said that PreCheck and Global Entry and other program suspensions were scheduled to take effect at 6 a.m. ET on Sunday. As of 12:40 p.m. ET, its updated statement still included a suspension of Global Entry but it had removed its mention of PreCheck.

“We are glad that DHS has decided to keep PreCheck operational and avoid a crisis of its own making,” Geoff Freeman, chief executive of U.S. Travel, an industry group whose members include major airlines, hotel chains like Hyatt and Marriott International and tourism boards around the country.

The move comes as a partial U.S. government shutdown that has left thousands of DHS workers, including TSA airport screeners, working without pay since it started on Feb. 14.

“TSA and CBP are prioritizing the general traveling population at our airports and ports of entry and suspending courtesy and special privilege escorts,” DHS Secretary Kristi Noem said in a statement.

Noem blamed Democrats for the shutdown. Democrats and Republicans remain at an impasse over immigration policy.

“Shutdowns have real world consequences, not just for the men and women of DHS and their families who go without a paycheck, but it endangers our national security,” she said. “The American people depend on this department every day, and we are making tough but necessary workforce and resource decisions to mitigate the damage inflicted by these politicians.”

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, (D-N.Y.), pushed back, saying the Trump administration is “choosing to inflict pain on the public instead of adopting common sense” reforms of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE.

DHS did not say whether it expected to reverse its suspension of Global Entry or what prompted the change. The White House referred an inquiry from CNBC to DHS.

Travel industry experts sharply criticized the move before it was reversed, which comes just months after last year’s record federal government shutdown cost airlines millions of dollars and hurt bookings, according to executives.

The sector’s leaders have consistently complained about how air travel has ended up at the center of repeated shutdowns and have pushed lawmakers to ensure that essential government workers are paid during funding lapses.

A government shutdown in 2019 ended shortly after a shortfall of air traffic controllers disrupted flights. Air traffic controller shortages, already problematic, also spiked during the 2025 government closure, snarling air travel shortly before it ended in November.

The government shutdown in the fall, the longest ever, cost the travel industry and other sectors $6.1 billion, the group said. Those disruptions affected about 6 million travelers.

“A4A is deeply concerned that TSA PreCheck and Global Entry programs are being suspended and that the traveling public will be, once again, used as a political football amid another government shutdown,” said Airlines for America CEO Chris Sununu. The group represents American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Southwest Airlines, United Airlines and other major carriers.

“The announcement was issued with extremely short notice to travelers, giving them little time to plan accordingly, which is especially troubling at this time of record air travel,” he added.

Three of the country’s busiest national parks will no longer require advance reservations during peak seasons this year.

The National Park Service announced this month that Arches, Glacier and Yosemite national parks are removing timed-entry systems that had been used in recent summers to manage heavy crowds.

Yosemite also will not require reservations for its popular “firefall” viewing period this season.

Timed-entry systems were introduced in recent years to limit the number of visitors entering parks at one time, particularly during busy summer months, the park service noted.

“Our national parks belong to the American people, and our priority is keeping them open and accessible,” said Kevin Lilly, acting assistant secretary for Fish, Wildlife and Parks, in a news release.

Lilly said the agency is expanding access where conditions allow while continuing to use targeted tools to protect visitor safety and park resources.

At Arches National Park, officials confirmed that a timed-entry reservation system will not be used in 2026.

Visitors are encouraged to arrive early, stay flexible and explore less-crowded areas if popular sites fill up. Arches is also an international dark sky park, and after-hours visits are encouraged.

Glacier National Park will also eliminate its park-wide vehicle reservation requirement this summer.

However, the park will continue managing congestion in high-demand areas such as Going-to-the-Sun Road and Logan Pass.

Instead, the park will rely on real-time traffic controls, seasonal staffing increases and temporary parking management if lots reach capacity.

“The tailored approaches reflect each park’s unique infrastructure, visitation demand and coordination with state and local partners,” the agency said.
