The U.S. Embassy in Guatemala has issued a security alert warning Americans to use “increased caution” when in the Central American country.

“The U.S. Embassy has lifted the shelter-in-place order for their staff,” says the alert, which was issued Sunday. “The situation remains tense with coordinated, armed attacks on police in several zones of Guatemala City.”

The Embassy recommends that Americans monitor local media for updates, avoid crowds and demonstrations, and aim to keep a “low profile.”

Travelers are advised to review personal security plans and minimize unnecessary movements.

The alert comes as gangs have attacked Guatemalan police after seizing control of three prisons in coordinated riots, The Associated Press (AP) reported.

There were “coordinated actions by self-named maras or gangs against state security forces, including armed attacks against civilian authorities,” the declaration noted.

The violence has been linked to major criminal gangs such as Barrio 18 and Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13), both labeled as terrorist organizations by Guatemala and the United States, according to AP.

HOZO Launched NeoSander on Kickstarter, a Palm-Sized Detail Sander with Reciprocating Linear Motor

0

HONG KONG, Jan. 20, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — HOZO has announced the upcoming Kickstarter launch of NeoSander, a next-generation palm-sized detail sanding tool engineered for evolved makers who demand precision, control, and versatility in fine-detail work. The NeoSander Kickstarter campaign is scheduled to go live on January 20, marking the official debut of a new category of compact sanding tools designed specifically for intricate, hands-on creative projects.

A Palm-Sized Detail Sander with Reciprocating Linear Motor
A Palm-Sized Detail Sander with Reciprocating Linear Motor

NeoSander is introduced as the world’s first palm-sized detail sander powered by a high-speed reciprocating linear motor, delivering straight-line sanding motion at up to 13,000 strokes per minute (SPM). Unlike traditional rotary tools, NeoSander is engineered for controlled micro sanding, offering makers a more precise, stable, and surface-friendly approach to detail work.

Designed for Fine Detail Sanding

At the core of NeoSander’s design is its ability to perform micro-precision sanding using stroke lengths ranging from 0.6 to 1.8 mm. This controlled motion allows users to sand delicate surfaces, edges, and tight spaces without gouging or over-removal of material.

With good concentricity below 0.05 mm, NeoSander is engineered to deliver significantly more accurate sanding passes compared to typical reciprocating sanders, which often exceed 0.30 mm in concentricity. The result is tighter control and more consistent results across fine-detail applications.

Why Reciprocating Motion Is Better Than Rotary for Detail Work

NeoSander was developed around the advantages of reciprocating motion over traditional rotary sanding. Rotary tools spin in circles, which can eat into surfaces, struggle in corners, slip easily, and generate excessive vibration and dust.

NeoSander’s straight-line, back-and-forth motion avoids surface gouging, reaches narrow gaps and corners with ease, and operates with lower vibration. This design improves handling and control while helping maintain a cleaner workspace with less airborne dust.

A Patented Linear Motor: First of Its Kind in Sanding Tools

What sets NeoSander apart is its patented reciprocating linear motor, a first-ever innovation in sanding tools. While most reciprocating sanders rely on gears and rods, NeoSander’s motor sends power directly to the sanding head. This direct-drive approach reduces wasted energy and delivers faster, more responsive strokes.

The tool also features stepless speed control, allowing users to fine-tune sanding power for different materials and levels of detail. Its straight-line motion improves sanding coverage while supporting efficient dust management.

Eight Interchangeable Sanding Heads for Tricky Details

NeoSander includes a complete set of eight interchangeable sanding heads, each designed to address different shapes and angles commonly encountered in detailed work. The included head shapes are:

  • Pointed Tip
  • Flat (Slim)
  • Flat (Medium)
  • Flat (Large)
  • Half-Cylinder
  • Arc
  • Acute Angle
  • Right Angle

This variety allows makers to sand edges, curves, recesses, and corners accurately without switching tools.

Streamlined Grit System for Continuous Workflow

NeoSander supports an eight-head, eight-grit system that keeps sanding organized and efficient. Each sanding head remains paired with its grit, allowing users to move seamlessly from coarse to fine sanding by simply swapping heads.

This approach reduces sandpaper waste, eliminates grit confusion, and avoids repeated peel-and-stick changes mid-project. For irregular surfaces, NeoSander also supports foam-layer sandpapers that flex to follow contours precisely.

Beyond Sanding: A Palm-Sized Mini Reciprocating Saw

NeoSander extends beyond sanding with its transformation into a palm-sized mini reciprocating saw. Equipped with curved and jigsaw-style blades, the tool features a patented anti-binding design that supports smoother, jam-free cutting.

A thicker, wave-shaped double-tooth pattern enables faster, more controlled cutting, making NeoSander suitable for detailed sawing tasks where larger tools lack precision.

Lightweight, Steady, and Comfortable

Weighing just 3.13 oz (89 g), NeoSander is lightweight, cordless, and designed for comfortable palm-held use. Stability is enhanced by an internal counterweight system that moves opposite the sanding head, helping reduce handle vibration by up to 85 percent.

The tool’s compact form factor, combined with its ergonomic grip, supports steady control during extended sessions.

Built for Real-World Making

NeoSander features an aluminum alloy shell, fast charging capability, and a compact storage-friendly design. It is splashproof, allowing for wet sanding applications, and fully cordless for portability across workshops, studios, and project sites.

Designed for Detail-Focused Creators

NeoSander is designed for makers who value precision and hands-on creativity, including:

  • 3D printing enthusiasts
  • DIY hobbyists
  • Woodworkers
  • Gundam and scale model builders
  • Car modification enthusiasts
  • Jewelry designers
  • Nail artists

It is an ideal tool for anyone passionate about model making and detailed craftsmanship.

Backed by HOZO‘s Proven Kickstarter Track Record

NeoSander builds on HOZO’s established history of successful maker tools. Across previous Kickstarter campaigns, HOZO products have collectively raised over $2.8 million and earned the support of more than 16,000 backers worldwide.

HOZO’s product lineup includes NeoBlade, NeoRuler, NeoRulerGO, M-Cube, M-Cube 02, MEAZOR, MEAZOR 3D, and ROLLOVA, each designed to empower evolved makers with precision-focused tools.

cpThrive: A first-of-its-kind digital guide to help identify evidence-based cerebral palsy treatments

0

SYDNEY, Jan. 20, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Cerebral Palsy Alliance, The University of Sydney, and CSIRO, Australia’s national science agency, have commissioned Miroma Project Factory to deliver a groundbreaking mobile app that helps people with cerebral palsy (CP), their carers, and clinicians understand and navigate evidence-based treatments with confidence.

Developed by Miroma Project Factory in partnership with leading researchers, cpThrive transforms decades of cerebral palsy evidence into everyday guidance for families and clinicians.
Developed by Miroma Project Factory in partnership with leading researchers, cpThrive transforms decades of cerebral palsy evidence into everyday guidance for families and clinicians.

Developed as part of the national TRANSMIT project (Translation Strategy Improving Function), cpThrive transforms decades of research into an easy-to-use “traffic light” guide, helping people with lived experience of CP to quickly identify therapies tailored to individual priorities and needs. The app could not have been developed without the support of our incredible research partners with lived experience, Children’s Health Queensland, and The Sydney Children’s Hospital Network.

cpThrive is an accessible, personalised, user-friendly tool designed through a thorough co-design process with people living with CP, clinicians, researchers, and policy experts. The app aims to improve functional outcomes and inform access to proven therapies across Australia.

The cpThrive app contains over 130 medical, allied health and other treatments. Short videos, collected from across Australia and internationally, demonstrate real-life therapy examples. The app is based on the globally recognised work of Professor Iona Novak, Dr Michelle Jackman, Dr Dana Bradford, Professor Nadia Badawi, Dr Cathy Morgan, Professor Leanne Sakzewski, Professor Roslyn Boyd, Professor Michael Fahey, and Dr Maria Mc Namara, in collaboration with the research team at Cerebral Palsy Alliance and other partners.

“This app is an important step in bridging the gap between research and real-world care. Evidence doesn’t help if it stays in academic papers. cpThrive ensures that what we know works is actually used by those who need it most,” said Professor Iona Novak.

The app aims to close the gap between the therapies we know that work and what gets implemented. Currently, only 55% of people receive effective therapy, while 43% receive treatments that may be ineffective or even harmful. cpThrive sets out to change that.

Miroma Project Factory securely designed and developed cpThrive as a Flutter-based mobile app with a solid back end and a user-centred experience. The app forms part of a national five-year research program funded by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC), and supported by the National Disability Insurance Agency, and leading CP researchers from The University of Sydney, CSIRO and The University of Queensland.

cpThrive will launch in Australia shortly and will continue to evolve based on user feedback and ongoing research outcomes.

The app will also help researchers understand how access to reliable, evidence-based information will benefit families.

Key features of the cpThrive app

  • Tailored app experiences for people with CP, and their carers.
  • Save favourite therapies, get real-time feedback, and view treatment options based on personal priorities.
  • Built-in accessibility features such as large text and screen reader compatibility.
  • Simple participation process for the national research study.
  • Easy updating and reporting tools for researchers.
  • Secure data storage that meets national research and privacy standards.

Call for families to sign up!

Six hundred families are needed to download the app, register their details, and start using it, providing feedback through a short survey every three months. Feedback from people with lived experience will be used to capture positive and negative feedback for designers and researchers to review and update the app.

By bringing decades of research into a practical digital tool, the app bridges the gap between science and everyday life, helping families, carers, and clinicians make confident, informed decisions that improve outcomes and quality of life.

Empowering Local Agriculture and Fisheries with Expertise and Technology
Heralding a New Era of Sustainable Development

HONG KONG, Jan. 20, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Uni-China Group (hereafter “the Group”) officially announced the launch of its flagship innovative initiative, the “Hong Kong Farmland” Brand Program. This demonstrates the Group’s full commitment to the future development of Hong Kong’s agriculture and fisheries industries and aligns with the National 15th Five-Year Plan for Economic and Social Development, which emphasizes advancing agricultural and rural modernization, as well as the HKSAR Government’s Blueprint for the Sustainable Development of Agriculture and Fisheries. By leveraging cutting-edge technology, optimizing supply chains, and implementing brand management, Uni-China Group is dedicated to advancing the modernization and sustainable development of the local agriculture and fisheries industries, revitalizing native resources and providing citizens with high-quality, healthy, value-for-money, low-carbon, and environmentally friendly locally produced agricultural and fisheries products, thus opening a new chapter for the agriculture and fisheries industries.

Revolutionizing Traditional Operations and Building a Sustainable Industrial Chain

The “Hong Kong Farmland” Program upholds the principle of balancing development with conservation. It actively employs modern technologies to boost local production capacity, with the goal of establishing a comprehensive industrial value chain, from production and sales to logistics and brand development, thereby significantly enhancing the market competitiveness of local agricultural and fisheries products.

The program aims to establish “Made in Hong Kong” agricultural and fisheries products as symbols of superior quality and trustworthiness. This will inject strong momentum into the local economy while creating a new industry model that delivers both economic benefits and social value.

As a major step toward realizing the Blueprint, Uni-China Group has secured the HKSAR Government’s deep-sea aquaculture project in the Mirs Bay (South) New Fish Culture Zone and has been officially granted an Approval In Principle Letter for Marine Fish Culture License by the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department. Centered on advanced deep-sea aquaculture technology, the project will cultivate high-quality fish species in pristine waters.

With the official launch of the new “Hong Kong Farmland” brand, Uni-China Group is dedicated to providing Hong Kong citizens with premium, healthy, low-carbon, and environmentally friendly local agricultural and fisheries products. The brand seeks to create a clear, easily recognizable identity, enabling consumers to readily identify and trust high-quality local products while accessing fresh, superior-value items through convenient channels. At the same time, it harnesses market forces to revive Hong Kong’s long-declining agriculture and fisheries industries, driving sustainable industry development.

The landmark government-business collaboration in advancing the upgrade and transformation of the agriculture and fisheries industries was witnessed and jointly officiated by Mr. Tse Chin-wan, BBS, JP, Secretary for Environment and Ecology of the Hong Kong SAR Government; Mr. Lai Kin-ming, JP, Director of Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation; Mr. Tommy Cheung Yu-yan, GBM, GBS, JP, Executive Council Member; Mr. Shiu Ka-fai, BBS, JP, Legislative Council Member; Mr. Chan Pok-chi, MH, JP, Legislative Council Member; Mr. Au Yeong Chi, Executive Chairman of the Association of Hong Kong Agricultural Development and Construction; Mr. Cheung Siu-keung, Chairman of Hong Kong Fishermen Consortium; Mr. Jackie Ling, Chairman of Uni-China Group; and Mr. James Ling, MH, Vice Chairman of Uni-China Group.

Government and Business Join Forces to Drive Transformation and Upgrade

Through the “Hong Kong Farmland” Program, Uni-China Group is committed to achieving the sustainable development goals for Hong Kong’s agriculture and fisheries industries, while enhancing the self-sufficiency rate of local products. This not only ensures citizens enjoy fresh, safe local produce and helps position Hong Kong as a hub for high-quality food supply, but it also creates employment and innovation opportunities for the younger generation, supporting Hong Kong’s economic diversification.

Mr. Jackie Ling, Chairman of Uni-China Group, stated, “Rooted in Hong Kong for 25 years, Uni-China Group has remained dedicated to fresh food retail and industry revitalization. The launch of the “Hong Kong Farmland” Brand Program represents a major step in giving back to society and promoting local agriculture and fisheries. The Nation’s 15th Five-Year Plan clearly emphasizes advancing agricultural and rural modernization, transforming agriculture into a modern large-scale industry. Uni-China Group will fully align with the development strategies of the Nation and the HKSAR Government by introducing expertise and advanced technologies, and leveraging our robust retail network to build a complete value chain from production and cold-chain logistics to retail and brand development, delivering premium local agricultural and fisheries products to Hong Kong citizens. Moving forward, we will continue to collaborate closely with the Government and industry partners to promote sustainable development in Hong Kong’s agriculture and fisheries industries, creating broader prospects for all stakeholders.”

Vast Market Potential Awaits Exploration

According to 2024 data from the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department , local capture fisheries production reached approximately 92,000 tonnes (valued at HK$2.4 billion), while marine fish culture production stood at only 626 tonnes (valued at HK$66 million). Combined local output accounted for about 20% of Hong Kong’s total seafood consumption. Yet demand remains exceptionally high, with annual imports averaging over 350,000 tonnes, highlighting enormous untapped potential in the local market.

The “Hong Kong Farmland” Program is poised to fill this gap, aiming to significantly increase local production value and inject billions of dollars into the sector, boosting new economic vitality.

At least 21 people were killed and dozens more were injured after a high-speed train derailed and struck another train in southern Spain on Sunday evening, according to reports.

The crash happened at around 6:40 p.m. local time near the town of Adamuz in Córdoba province, when the initial derailment forced a second train off the tracks. Roughly 100 people were injured, including 25 with serious injuries, Reuters reported, citing police sources and local media.

One of the train drivers was among those killed, according to Reuters.

Spain’s rail infrastructure operator, Adif, said the Iryo 6189 Malaga-to-Madrid train derailed and crashed onto an adjacent track, causing a second train traveling from Madrid to Huelva to also derail.

The crash happened about 10 minutes after the Iryo train departed Córdoba.

The Iryo train was identified as a Freccia 1000 train carrying more than 300 passengers, while the other train was operated by Renfe and had approximately 100 people on board, Reuters reported.

One woman, who said she was a passenger on the Iryo train, described chaotic scenes during the derailment.

Quick-thinking tennis star Zeynep Sonmez offers to meet up with ill Australian Open ball girl

0

The Turkish tennis player who helped a stricken Australian Open ball girl says she would “love” to meet up with the youngster following the scary incident on Sunday.

World No.11 Ekaterina Alexandrova was serving late in the second set when Zeynep Sonmez noticed the girl was not well.

The girl crashed to the floor before quickly standing up again as the world No.112 instantly rushed to help carry her off the court and into the shade.

But concerns mounted as the youngster fainted in the arms of Sonmez, who luckily saved her from falling for a second time.

The girl was able to regain her composure after receiving treatment and walked herself off the court alongside medical staff.

Sonmez put the situation to one side when the match resumed, though for a time it looked like she would be on her way out of the tournament.

Then everything changed as the 23-year-old pulled off a stunning comeback — even after dropping serve herself in the third set — to win 7-5 4-6 6-4.

Sonmez was handed a Turkish flag from the stands as she celebrated the emotional win, but her thoughts remained with the ball girl.

“She was really struggling. She said she was fine but it was really obvious she was not fine,” Sonmez told the BBC.

“So I went to grab her and said ‘sit down and drink something, you’re not fine’.

“As we were walking she fainted so luckily I grabbed her. She was really shaking.”

Sonmez played down her swift actions as nothing out of the ordinary.

“I always say it is more important to be a good human being than a good tennis player,” she said.

“It was just my instinct to help her and I think everyone would do the same. I’m happy I got to help.”

It is unclear if or when the girl will return to her role but Sonmez, guaranteed to be hanging around for at least a few more days after her career-best win, is hopeful of a catch-up.

“If I see the ball girl tomorrow or later in the tournament I’d love to speak to her,” she said.

Sonmez will face American wildcard Elizabeth Mandlik or Hungary’s Anna Bondar in the second round.

A surprise run to the fourth round is on offer in that section of the draw, after Alexandrova’s shock defeat came as 20th seed Marta Kostyuk was knocked out by an ankle injury and France’s Elsa Jacquemot.

Kostyuk, a quarter-finalist in 2024, rolled her ankle late in the third set and remarkably played through what was later revealed to be a torn ligament.

“I won’t be able to continue at the Australian Open in doubles with my amazing partner Gabriela Ruse,” Kostyuk announced overnight.

“The Australian Open has always been one of my favorite tournaments, so this isn’t how I imagined my run ending. But that’s part of the sport.

“Despite the setback, Brisbane was a great way to start the year, and I’m thankful for that momentum.

“Now it’s time to focus on recovery, and I’m excited to be back on court as soon as possible.

“Wishing everyone a great Australian Open!”

Jacquemot will face former top-20 star Yulia Putintseva, with the winner of that match to face Sonmez, Bondar or Mandlik in the third round.

But No.7 seed Jasmine Paolini looms large as a possible fourth-round opponent, after last year’s French Open champion cruised in a 6-1 6-2 first-round win over Aliaksandra Sasnovich.

Surfer says shark attack felt ‘like being hit by a car’ as board bitten in half: reports

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

A surfer was bitten by a shark that broke his board in Northern California this week, in the state’s first shark incident of the year.

“It was like being hit by a car,” Tommy Civik told Bay City News, according to SFGate of the incident in Mendocino County, north of San Francisco. “All of a sudden, I was shot out of the water.”

South Coast Fire Protection District Chief Jason Warner told SFGate that his team responded to a beach in Gualala, California, before 9 a.m. on Tuesday, and bystanders told him that a “big” shark “hit the surfer and the surfboard, threw the surfer up in the air a bit, and broke the board in half.”

He said it “latched on to half of the board and [was] kind of thrashing it around.”

Civik told the Los Angeles Times that he never saw the shark.

“My board snapped in half on impact,” he said. “My friend watching said that I flew in the air. I’m still piecing together what happened. …The whole thing was so jarring, I was just trying to get away.”

Peter Tira with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife told SFGate that Civik needed stitches and DNA from his wound will be used to identify what type of shark attacked him.

“I was unbelievably lucky,” Civik told The Times. “My board took all the impact, and the teeth just grazed me,” Civik said. “I had quite a bit of adrenaline, and since I could walk, I drove myself to the hospital.”

His friend Marco Guerrero told the Times he saw the shark attacking what he at first thought was a seal.

“I just remember Tommy saying, ‘I’ll meet you out there,’ and suiting up. I was looking out at the waves when I saw the thrashing,” he explained. “I said, ‘Oh that’s a shark attack,’ thinking it was attacking a seal. I didn’t realize it was Tommy.”

After the attack, Civik said he “just put [his] head down and swam, fast.”

“I didn’t know where the shark was, so I just focused on getting away,” he told The Times. “After a minute, I realized that if the shark [had] wanted to bite me again, it would’ve. It all happened so fast.”

Civik’s attack comes less than a month after an open ocean swimmer was killed by a shark in Santa Cruz County, and following a record year for shark incidents in 2025.

“However, there were only 3 incidents with injuries last year, far below the highest year, which was 1974 with 7 injuries confirmed,” Tira told SFGate.
