Aussie cricket great Damien Martyn reveals he had a ‘50-50 chance’ of survival during health battle

0

Australian cricket great Damien Martyn has revealed he was given a 50-50 chance of survival when he was placed in an induced coma amid a bout of meningitis.

The former Australian right-hand batter was rushed to hospital in late December before being diagnosed with meningitis, an infection and swelling of fluid and membranes around the brain and spinal cord.

The 54-year-old had been placed in an induced coma and was fighting for life in a Gold Coast intensive care unit, but awoke and was eventually discharged.

His recovery was described as a miracle by friends and family.

But, speaking publicly for the first time since the incident, Martyn has revealed just how serious the situation was.

“On the 27th of December 2025 my life was taken out of my hands…when meningitis took over my brain, & unbeknownst to me I was placed into a paralysed coma for eight days to help me fight this awful disease,” he posted on social media.

“And that I did! Fight that is! After being given a 50-50 chance of surviving, I came out of the induced coma eight days later … not able to walk or talk.

“And yet four days after that, with the doctors in disbelief, I walked, I talked and proved to them all why I should be released from hospital to start my recovery.

“So happy to be home, to be able to put my feet in the sand on the beach and to start thanking all those people that reached out to me and my family in their unwavering support.”

Martyn, who began the message with a massive thank you to his family, friends and others who reached out to him, went on to thank all the medical staff who cared for him.

“This experience has reminded me of how fragile life is, how quickly everything can change & how precious time is,” he said.

“There are so many wonderful people in this world … from paramedics (at Mermaid Waters Ambulance), doctors & nurses (at Gold Coast University Hospital) … to family, friends and people I didn’t even know.

“I feel like I met all these fantastic people in the past three weeks, or they reached out to me through messages of love and support.

“I am so grateful to you all. Thank you! Bring on 2026 …I’m back!”

Darwin-born Martyn earned a Test debut at 21 replacing Dean Jones in the 1992-93 home series against West Indies, and was Western Australia’s captain at 23.

He was player of the series the last time Australia won a series in India, topscoring in four of Australia’s eight innings at the crease in the 2004 battle for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

His Test high score of 165 came against New Zealand in 2005, one of 13 centuries Martyn made in the baggy green. He averaged 46.37.

Martyn was among a handful of star Australian players to retire in the 2006-07 Ashes series, playing his final match at the Adelaide Oval that summer.

He also played 208 ODIs, averaging 40.8 and scoring an unbeaten 88 runs as Australia defeated India in the final of the 2003 World Cup.

Michael Zerafa drops retirement bombshell in backstage interview after controversial Nikita Tszyu bout

0

Michael Zerafa has hinted he may retire from boxing in an expletive-laden rant after his hostile bout against Nikita Tszyu ended in controversy.

Furious fans hurled beer cans and water bottles into the ring after the referee stopped the fight before the start of the third round and declared a “no decision” when Zerafa repeatedly told the ringside doctor “I can’t see”.

Officials announced the reason for the fight being stopped was an “accidental head butt” near the finish of round two following a series of head clashes during a frenetic opening between the fierce rivals.

“I can’t see. I can’t see,” Zerafa told the ringside doctor before changing his story during his post-fight in-the-ring interview.

“I don’t know why everyone’s booing me. I didn’t stop it, the doctor stopped it. It’s not my fault.”

Asked what he told the doctor, Zerafa said: “I said it’s blurry, but all good. Let’s go.”

Grilled again on whether or not he said ‘I can’t see’ – which TV captured – Zerafa insisted, “No, I’m ready to go” before calling for a rematch.

“This is boxing, man. Like, let’s do it again. No disrespect to anybody, I don’t know what everyone’s booing for.

“I want to apologise to everybody but I don’t know why you are booing. I really don’t understand.

“You guys should be getting behind us athletes, whether you love or hate me.

“This is the sport, guys.”

But things took a turn backstage when Zerafa spoke to host Ben Damon.

“The doctor came, asked me, covered my eye and said, ‘Can you see?’ I said it’s blurry. He never gave me the opportunity to continue. Nothing, just waved it off. The referee waved it off,” Zerafa said.

“The doctor asked me questions, I answered the questions. He told me to cover my eye and said, ‘Can you see?’ I said it’s blurry, there’s blood in my eye, it’s a natural cut.

“(There was no) Do you wanna continue? Do you wanna still fight? Nothing … I’m just as confused and angry as everyone else.

“It was a tough fight … I don’t know, I’m over this s**t, man.”

When pressed on how over it he is, Zerafa said he may never return to the ring.

“I don’t know if they are going to see me back in the ring again. I’m f***ing done. I’ve bled for this sport, I’ve done everything for this sport. I never get the credit I deserve. This is f***ing bullshit.

“I feel sorry for Nikita and the fight fans. Myself. Everybody…

“First it was the bulls**t that I didn’t rock up, wave it off, New South Wales doctor. I don’t know. I’m not saying anyone is behind it.”

Zerafa also released a statement on Instagram, saying he wanted to continue the fight.

First U.S. Patient Dosed in BiPASS: Phase 3 Prostate Cancer Diagnosis Study

0

MELBOURNE, Australia and INDIANAPOLIS, Jan. 16, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Telix Pharmaceuticals Limited (ASX: TLX, NASDAQ: TLX, “Telix”) today announces that the first patient in the United States (U.S.) has been dosed in BiPASS™ (Biopsy of the Prostate Avoidance Stratification Study), a Phase 3 trial to  evaluate the use of Telix’s commercial PSMA-PET[1] imaging agents, Illuccix® (kit for the preparation of gallium Ga 68 gozetotide injection) and Gozellix® (kit for the preparation of gallium Ga 68 gozetotide injection) in the initial prostate cancer diagnosis setting. The dose was administered under the supervision of Dr. Brian Mazzarella at Urology Austin and supplied by RLS Radiopharmacies.

BiPASS™ is the first study designed to gain marketing authorization for 68Ga-PSMA-PET[2] imaging in the pre-biopsy setting. The prospective, open-label Phase 3 trial will enroll 250 patients across sites in the U.S. and Australia. The study aims to determine whether combining MRI[3] with Illuccix/Gozellix 68Ga-PSMA-11 PET can improve diagnostic accuracy and reduce unnecessary biopsies compared to current standard practice. Men with elevated PSA[4] often proceed from an inconclusive MRI to template prostate biopsy. This procedure is stressful and unpleasant, can lead to complications[5] and frequently proves to be of no benefit to the patient[6].

In the U.S., more than one million prostate biopsies are performed annually, yet up to 75% are negative[6], and one in four patients declines the physician recommendation of receiving a biopsy[7]. The objective of BiPASS™ is to demonstrate improved lesion detection and patient stratification by integrating non-invasive molecular Illuccix/Gozellix 68Ga-PSMA-11 PET imaging early in the diagnostic pathway, to enable biopsy de-escalation or, alternatively, greater biopsy precision when administered.

If the BiPASS™ study achieves its primary objectives, it could lead to a reduction in unnecessary biopsies, improved patient experience, and a significant expansion of access to precision imaging for patients with suspected prostate cancer, potentially increasing the use of 68Ga-PSMA-11 PET in a large new patient population.

Dr. Mazzarella, Vice President of Research for Urology America, said, “We’re excited to participate in the BiPASS trial at Urology Austin, which brings together promising technologies and emerging trends in patient care.  If BiPASS is successful in meeting its primary endpoint, it could eliminate the need for biopsy—reducing risks, side effects, and costs—and improve decision-making for providers and patients.”

Kevin Richardson, Chief Executive Officer, Telix Precision Medicine, added, “Illuccix and Gozellix are already transforming how clinicians treat and manage prostate cancer. By initiating this trial, we are reinforcing Telix’s commitment to patient centricity, clinical innovation, and industry leadership—with the goal of eliminating invasive biopsy.”

About BiPASS™

BiPASS™ (ClinicalTrials.gov ID: NCT07052214) leverages promising clinical findings from the PRIMARY[8] and PRIMARY2[9] studies, which demonstrated that MRI combined with 68Ga-PSMA-11 PET can better define or rule out prostate cancer and guide active surveillance before invasive biopsy. Professor Louise Emmett, Principal Investigator for PRIMARY, serves on the BiPASS™ Steering Committee and as an Investigator on the study.

About Illuccix® (kit for the preparation of gallium Ga 68 gozetotide injection)

Illuccix, after radiolabeling with 68Ga, is indicated for PET scanning of PSMA positive lesions in men with prostate cancer who have suspected metastasis and are candidates for initial definitive therapy, those with suspected recurrence based on elevated serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) level, and for selection of patients who are indicated for PSMA-directed therapy as described in the prescribing information of the therapeutic products.

About Gozellix® (kit for the preparation of gallium Ga 68 gozetotide injection)

Gozellix, after radiolabeling with 68Ga, is indicated for PET scanning of PSMA positive lesions in men with prostate cancer who have suspected metastasis and are candidates for initial definitive therapy, and those with suspected recurrence based on elevated serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) level.

NUH INAUGURATES NEW CENTRE TO ADVANCE PREDICTIVE AND ACCESSIBLE CARE FOR DIGESTIVE HEALTH

0

The National University Centre for Digestive Health heralds a new era of care through quicker cross-referrals to surgical specialties, strengthened community partnerships and patient-friendly treatment delivery

SINGAPORE, Jan. 16, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Digestive health is central to overall well-being, influencing nutrition, immunity, and quality of life. Yet common conditions, such as ulcers, liver disease, and colorectal disorders, often go undetected until they lead to serious complications. To address this, the National University Hospital (NUH) has officially opened the National University Centre for Digestive Health (NUCD), a facility dedicated to early detection, advanced treatment, and seamless patient care for digestive diseases.

At the official opening of the National University Centre for Digestive Health, officiated by Professor Kenneth Mak, Director-General of Health, Ministry of Health (third from left).
At the official opening of the National University Centre for Digestive Health, officiated by Professor Kenneth Mak, Director-General of Health, Ministry of Health (third from left).

Since its concept launch in 2024, NUCD has focused on consolidating NUH’s digestive health services under one roof to provide greater convenience for patients. Its reach extends beyond NUH, serving as a referral hub for complex cases from other hospitals within the National University Health System, including Ng Teng Fong General Hospital and Alexandra Hospital, ensuring patients receive specialised care when needed.

With its official opening, the Centre is strengthening the entire care pathway by accelerating access from initial digestive consultation to surgical expertise in Upper Gastrointestinal, Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic, and Colorectal, so patients can see the right specialists on the same day. This streamlined approach reduces waiting times, minimises repeated visits, and enables faster treatment decisions for better outcomes.

Strengthening prevention: From community collaborations to clinical excellence

NUCD has contributed significantly to the clinical validation and implementation of the Fibrosis-4 (FIB-4) score and fibroscan to screen for liver fibrosis, or scarring of the liver, in high-risk patients with fatty liver and other chronic liver diseases[1]. Since September 2022, a chronic liver disease screening programme for high-risk individuals has been launched in partnership with National University Polyclinics and General Practitioners (GP) clinics. Through consultations and routine health assessments done at these clinics, asymptomatic individuals identified as potentially high-risk are referred to NUCD for comprehensive screening. To date, the Centre has screened more than 12,000 high-risk patients, facilitating earlier detection and interventions. With continuing medical education and engagement, NUCD continues to expand this network to enhance preventive care for liver health.

Another key focus of the Centre is improving the detection of colorectal cancer, often called a ‘silent killer’ because symptoms usually appear only in later stages. According to the Singapore Cancer Registry Annual Report 2022[2], colorectal cancer is the second most common cancer and the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths locally. To tackle this, the Centre is improving colonoscopy quality by increasing the Adenoma Detection Rate (ADR), a measure of how often doctors detect and remove precancerous polyps during the procedure.

Studies[3] show that every 1 per cent increase in ADR lowers colorectal cancer risk by 3 per cent, making these improvements a vital step in prevention. Put simply, a higher ADR means that more polyps are removed early, reducing cancer risk. New initiatives such as AI-enabled and image-enhanced colonoscopy, an automated ADR calculation system, and a dashboard displaying critical quality indicators for endoscopists have helped boost ADR at NUCD from 33.5 per cent in 2022 to 42.4 per cent in 2025, well above the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy guideline of at least 25 per cent[4].

Making IBD care more convenient and precise

Established in 2016, the Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Centre of Excellence is now a cornerstone of NUCD, delivering advanced care across all ages – from paediatric to adult patients. Among its key innovations is the home administration of intravenous biologics, reducing the need for frequent hospital visits and improving convenience.

Others include point-of-care intestinal ultrasound, which enables real-time, non-invasive assessment during clinic consultations, and a translational precision medicine programme that personalises treatment and provides access to clinical trials and novel therapies, such as faecal microbiota transplantation. The IBD Centre of Excellence also aims to play a leading role in regional education, having hosted IBD training programmes for over 100 healthcare professionals from ASEAN countries in the past five years.

“The launch of NUCD marks a significant step forward in how we care for patients with digestive conditions,” said Adj A/Prof Lee Guan Huei, Centre Director, National University Centre for Digestive Health. “By bringing together advanced diagnostics, specialist expertise, and cutting-edge technology, we aim to deliver care that is faster, more precise, and patient-focused. At the same time, we are driving research into new detection methods and innovative therapies, such as blood-based diagnostic tools that reduce the need for invasive procedures while maintaining accuracy. Our goal is simple – to detect problems early, treat them well, and help our patients live healthier lives.” Adj A/Prof Lee is also Head and Senior Consultant, Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Department of Medicine, NUH.

Sunmi Cuts Clutter and Boosts Speed with New All-in-One Mobile Terminal & Scanner-Printer

0

SINGAPORE, Jan. 16, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Business Challenge: Stores today face dual pressures: the need for faster, more flexible customer service beyond fixed counters, and the demand for simpler, more reliable back-end operations. Cluttered workstations with multiple devices hinder efficiency and agility.

Sunmi’s Solution: Sunmi addresses these core challenges with two purpose-built hardware products designed for resilience and workflow integration.

The V3 PLUS All-in-One Mobile Terminal represents a significant evolution in Sunmi’s handheld series. It now features an industrial-grade scan engine for superior performance on damaged, low-quality, or distant barcodes, making it reliable in demanding environments such as retail stockrooms or outdoor settings. Its refined ergonomic design ensures comfort during extended mobile use. By integrating robust scanning, payment processing, and a high-speed printer into one rugged device, the V3 PLUS enables staff to complete the entire transaction loop anywhere—transforming any employee into a fully capable, mobile service point.

For fixed, high-volume stations, Sunmi introduces the 80MM Label Printer. Its key innovation is the merging of a scanner and a thermal printer into a single, compact unit. This eliminates the need for separate devices and associated cable clutter, requiring only a single USB cable for both power and data. This streamlined design ensures consistent, fast processing for critical tasks at main checkouts or kitchen expo areas.

Strategic Value: Together, these tools create a more adaptive and robust operation. The V3 PLUS handles agile, in-the-moment engagements and complex scanning tasks, while the 80MM Label Printer anchors high-volume hub operations. Both connect to Sunmi’s Device Management Platform for centralized monitoring and control. This combined approach empowers businesses to build operations that are not only more efficient but also more resilient to varying demands, ultimately enhancing the experience for both customers and employees.

Kerry Launches 2026 Supplements Taste Charts: Defining the Next Era of Flavour in Supplements and Sports Nutrition

0

SINGAPORE, Jan. 16, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Kerry, a global leader in taste and nutrition, has released its 2026 Supplements Taste Charts for Asia Pacific and the Middle East, highlighting the region’s evolving taste preferences and the rise of flavour‑forward, lifestyle‑led supplements and sports nutrition.

Consumers are moving away from traditional pills toward more flavour-forward formats such as gummies.
Consumers are moving away from traditional pills toward more flavour-forward formats such as gummies.

Across Asia Pacific, Middle East & Africa (APMEA), supplements are increasingly viewed as part of daily wellbeing rather than an occasional health support. Consumers are focused on benefits such as sleep, immunity, digestion, stress management, energy and emotional balance, with taste and texture now strongly influencing continued purchase and long term use.

The global supplements market is projected to reach US$107 billion by 2029 with APMEA continuing to show strong momentum. China, India, Southeast Asia and the Middle East are driving adoption, supported by rising health awareness, busier lifestyles and growing interest in personalised nutrition.

Flavour‑Forward Trends Redefining Supplements

Consumers are moving away from traditional pills toward more flavour-forward formats such as gummies, chews, drink mixes, dissolving strips and powder blends. Here, flavour plays a critical role in masking functional bitterness, reinforcing emotional cues and signalling naturality or efficacy. Three major flavour movements stand out across Asia Pacific and the Middle East:

Simplicity Amplified

Consumers are gravitating toward transparency and ingredient authenticity. Flavours inspired by whole foods, botanicals, fermented notes, and lightly‑sweet or sour profiles signal purity and nutrient‑dense simplicity. Popular flavours include citrus, yuzu, ginger, turmeric, matcha, elderflower, cultured dairy, and yogurt. These pair naturally with today’s lifestyle-friendly formats where the flavours enhance a product’s perceived health benefits.

Category Crashers

As mealtimes blur and routines shift, consumers aren’t sticking to traditional food, beverage, or supplement boundaries. Category Crashers spotlights the emergence of hybrid products that break the mould: savoury energy bars, confectionery-inspired supplement formats, coffee‑infused condiments and more. These hybrids are about creative formats and unexpected pairings that reflect how people eat today.

Maximalist Flavour

Maximalism takes centre stage in 2026, spurred by younger consumers who want bold, layered flavours that deliver high sensory impact. Dessert‑style profiles, sour intensities, spicy‑accented formats, and flavour stacks such as tiramisu passionfruit or brownie chocolate create memorable, intense taste experiences. This trend reinforces supplements as lifestyle treats rather than functional obligations.

Within these trends, sports nutrition continues to broaden beyond athletes to active consumers who expect flavour to match function. Simplicity Amplified is seen in refreshing citrus hydration blends, botanically‑infused recovery options, and natural dairy flavours in high‑protein systems; Category Crashers bring café‑style profiles, soda‑inspired electrolytes and fruity energy shots; and Maximalist Flavour is evident in extreme sour or spicy pre‑workouts, and multi‑layered profiles in protein shakes.

“Consumers across APMEA are demanding more from their proactive health products, not only clinically supported benefits, but also flavours that excite,” said Olivier De Salmiech, Vice President, Health & Therapies, Kerry Asia Pacific, Middle East & Africa. “When products taste great, has science-backed benefits, and integrate naturally into everyday life, they become wellness rituals consumers look forward to.”
