Airlines cancel slew of Caribbean flights, are ‘closely monitoring’ situation amid Venezuela strikes

U.S. airlines began canceling Caribbean flights early Saturday morning after the “large-scale attack” on Venezuela.

President Donald Trump announced that Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro and his wife were captured and flown out of the country and will stand trial on criminal charges in New York.

Following the successful mission, the FAA issued a slew of notices to airmen (NOTAMs) over Venezuelan and Caribbean airspace, barring any flights without FAA approval.

The NOTAMs are scheduled to last through late Saturday night. As of this writing, it is unclear if they will be extended.

Hawaii’s ‘climate’ cash grab hits wall as court blocks hefty new tourist tax

0

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Hawaii’s “Green Fee” bill was set to raise tourist taxes quite substantially to help fund “climate change” mitigation this year — but now a judge has halted the provision.

The Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), along with a cruise ship supplier, filed a lawsuit in early September challenging state tax and county finance officials in the Aloha State, as Fox News Digital previously reported.

On Dec. 31, the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals issued an injunction pending appeal.

HISTORIC LANDMARK TO BEGIN CHARGING FOREIGN VISITORS AMID OVERCROWDING BATTLES

It temporarily blocks enforcement of the cruise-ship tax while the appeals proceed, The Associated Press (AP) reported.

The Transient Accommodations Tax (TAT) planned to raise the tax on tourists who stay at Hawaii hotels while imposing a new 11% tax on cruises, according to the text of the bill.

Toni Schwartz, spokesperson for the Hawaii attorney general’s office, told AP the office “remain[s] confident that Act 96 is lawful and will be vindicated when the appeal is heard on the merits.”

Fox News Digital reached out to the CLIA for comment.

Portions of the revenue raised would go into the “Climate Mitigation and Resiliency Special Fund.”

The association previously told Fox News Digital it “believe[s] the extension violates both the U.S. Constitution and federal law, while imposing an additional financial burden on passengers already subject to substantial fees and taxes.”

The association also pointed out the benefits that cruise tourism brings as a major economic driver of the state.

“Extending the TAT to cruise passengers threatens to deter visitors whose spending fuels this economic engine, risking job losses and eroding the financial stability of businesses dependent on tourism,” CLIA added.

The lawsuit points out that the state’s counties each add their own 3% surcharge on top of the state’s tax — bringing the total tax to 14%.

Behind the mesh curtain: Why airline class wars will intensify in 2026

0

Spencer Platt | Getty Images News | Getty Images

From Spirit Airlines‘ fight for survival to American Airlines‘ planned glow-up, from new international routes and brand-new airport lounges to stingier frequent flyer policies, class divides in the sky will intensify in 2026.

Airlines went into 2025 upbeat: Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian forecast a record year for the century-old carrier. But concerns about President Donald Trump’s trade war, skittish consumers and an oversupply of domestic seats brought U.S. airfare down and weighed on industry profits.

“It’s the airline version of the K-shaped economy. Monetize the top of the K and minimize the shortfall at the bottom,” said Robert Mann, who has worked at several airlines and is president of aviation consulting firm R.W. Mann & Co.

Now, the leaders of the country’s biggest airlines are putting even more focus on customers who will pay extra for their tickets in exchange for a little more space or other perks like earlier boarding and access to never-sufficient overhead bin space.

The view into American Airlines first-class cabin on a Boeing 737.

Leslie Josephs/CNBC

They still face continued problems, like a shortage of air traffic controllers and aging infrastructure. Despite billions of additional federal spending to fix some of the problems, major improvements will take years.

Mann said airlines need to do more to improve reliability. U.S. carriers had a 77% on-time rate, according to the Department of Transportation, which defines on-time as arrival within 15 minutes of the schedule.

“When the flight is late or canceled, it doesn’t matter if you’re at the top of the K or the bottom of the K,” he said.

Here’s how the next year is shaping up for the airline industry:

Winners take (almost) all

Through the first nine months of the year, Delta and United Airlines accounted for nearly all of U.S. airline profits.

It’s an industry divide that’s been brewing for years, further fueled by a surge in costs and shifting consumer tastes as wealthier travelers have increased their share of overall spending.

While the economy has been resilient for the most part, any weakening in 2026 could have an outsize effect on more price-sensitive consumers and, therefore, airlines that are more exposed to coach-class domestic travel, like lower-cost carriers.

Those airlines have been making moves of their own. JetBlue Airways, for example, has been shifting its focus to more profitable routes and premium seats. It plans to debut a domestic business class in mid-2026 with seats up at the front of the cabin that are roomier but not quite as elaborate as its top-tier lie-flat Mint suites.

Stable fares

Airfare will likely remain steady next year over 2025, according to an American Express Global Business Travel forecast in mid-November.

Demand has rebounded after dropping during a record-long government shutdown, but it’s not clear whether 2026 will be a blockbuster.

Southwest Airlines CEO Bob Jordan told CNBC in December that the “first quarter looks strong” but that “it’s hard to say,” whether it will be better than a year ago.

Read more CNBC airline news

Whither Spirit

Struggling budget travel icon Spirit Airlines is in its second bankruptcy in less than a year after a court-blocked acquisition by JetBlue, an engine grounding, a surge in costs and other problems, raising questions about its ability to survive.

Industry insiders and airline analysts have said the yellow-plane airline will have to make much bigger moves with this bankruptcy.

“We do not expect it to remain a standalone company this time next year, with a merger or Chapter 7 outcome likely to drive upside to our earnings forecast,” said a Raymond James note on Dec. 19.

Why Spirit Airlines is struggling

Analysts expect that merger partner would be Frontier Airlines, the fellow budget airline that has attempted to combine with Spirit repeatedly since 2022, but it’s not clear whether the two sides will reach a deal. Spirit said earlier this month that it’s in “active negotiations” for a stand-alone reorganization or a transaction. Frontier and Spirit declined to comment further.

Southwest transformed

Southwest’s preparing for a major change in 2026. The airline’s decades-long cattle call will end on Jan. 27 when assigned seating begins.

It’s coming off a slew of changes it already put into place last year. It debuted extra legroom seats that command higher prices and started charging many customers to check bags for the first time, a service that brought in more than $7 billion for its U.S. rivals in 2024, the last full year of available data, according to the Transportation Department.

The carrier’s stock is the top gainer of U.S. passenger airlines. Southwest shares rose nearly 23% in 2025 compared with the NYSE Arca Airline Index’s 5% advance, and beat out profit leaders Delta and United as well as the broader market.

Investors have been bullish on the company’s transformation to a more traditional, segmented airline, which has been sped along by a stake from activist investor Elliott Investment Management.

American makeover

American is expanding its lounges and launching a fleet of Airbus 321XLR planes in 2026 as it aims to catch up in the luxury travel boom. Free inflight Wi-Fi is also coming for loyalty program members starting in January, American said last spring.

The airline already made more minor changes, like adding Lavazza coffee for all its passengers and Champagne Bollinger for its top-tier lounges and cabins, to uplift its brand as well, but it has a long path to reach Delta’s and United’s profitability.

American Airlines and Delta planes on the tarmac at LaGuardia Airport (LGA) in the Queens borough of New York, US, on Friday, Nov. 7, 2025.

Just before Christmas, American also announced that it will no longer award customers on its no-frills basic economy tickets with frequent flyer miles, following a similar move by Delta several years ago.

American hasn’t yet announced changes to its elite status requirements for 2027, but the carrier is under pressure because Delta and United have said they will hold status thresholds steady.

The airline is also making some changes that aim to improve reliability, recently announcing it will increase so-called banks, or clusters of flights at its largest hub, Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, from nine to 13.

American also said it is testing out two electronic gates there, where passengers on narrow-body domestic flights scan their own boarding passes, in hopes of getting travelers on planes faster, and in September, it said it will remove bag sizers from gates.

Croc caught in a trap at popular Darwin swimming creek on New Year’s Day

0

Wildlife rangers in the Top End have caught their first crocodile of the year in a creek where children were swimming the day before.

The 2.7-metre female saltwater reptile was caught in a trap in a Darwin rural area on New Year’s Day by the Northern Territory Parks and Wildlife croc unit.

Veteran ranger Tom Nichols said on Friday “kids swim in that area”. Children were reportedly in the creek on New Year’s Eve.

A member of the public alerted Parks and Wildlife on Thursday of a croc in a trap that had been set with pig bait on the creek, Nichols said.

He and another ranger followed normal procedure, putting a snout rope over the croc’s top jaw, then a zip tie before pulling the reptile from the trap and tying it up with duct tape.

“We never release saltwater crocs, they go to a croc farm,” he said.

In response to a Parks and Wildlife Facebook post on the croc capture, one user posted: “Tommy still catching the handbags”.

Being the wet season in the Top End, with water spreading everywhere, crocodiles were more active and could be present in any waterway, said Nichols, who has been with Parks and Wildlife for more than 45 years.

In 2025, the croc unit captured 202 reptiles that may have posed a threat to people.

Parks and Wildlife is urging residents and visitors in the Top End to “be crocwise” and parents to talk with their children about the risks around water of the ambush predators.

“With the hot weather and plenty of water around, it’s understandable that swimming or fishing near the water’s edge can be tempting,” the service said on its Facebook page.

It advises people to stay five metres away from the water at all times.

The all-natural hair routine Aussies are switching to for thicker, shinier hair in 2026

0

January has a funny way of making us reflective.

Suddenly, the rushed routines of last year feel tired, and the promise of doing things better creeps in.

Fewer shortcuts, more intention, better habits that actually stick. For many Australians, that mindset is now extending well beyond fitness goals and into something far more personal: hair health.

Know the news with the 7NEWS app: Download today Arrow

Hair is often the silent victim of stress, hormones, aggressive styling and products that promise miracles but quietly do the opposite.

By the time most people notice breakage, thinning or chronic scalp irritation, the damage has already been building for years.

The good news is that a genuine hair reset does not need salon-level treatments or harsh actives. It needs consistency, smart formulation and a focus on the scalp, not just the strands.

That is where Sozo Australia comes in.

Australian-developed and manufactured on the Gold Coast, Sozo Australia has built a cult following by doing something surprisingly rare in the beauty space: creating all-natural haircare that actually performs.

Their philosophy is simple but powerful.

Healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp, and natural products should never mean compromised results.

For anyone making 2026 the year of better hair, Sozo’s Complete Scalp & Haircare Bundle offers a streamlined, science-backed routine designed to support hydration, strength, shine and growth without sulphates, silicones or hidden nasties.

Why natural haircare has finally had its glow-up

Natural haircare has long had a reputation problem.

Safer, yes. Effective, not always. Many consumers have been burnt by formulas that sounded impressive but left hair limp, greasy or still irritated.

Weekly hair mask nourishment without heaviness or residue.

Sozo was created in direct response to that frustration.

Every product in the Hair Health range is formulated with scientifically proven natural ingredients, with aloe vera used as the first ingredient instead of water.

That choice alone elevates performance, delivering hydration and scalp support from the very first wash.

The brand removes sulphates, silicones, parabens, PEGs, phthalates and chemical-based fragrances entirely, while carefully selecting oils, extracts and actives that deliver visible results over time.

The outcome? Thousands of Australians with all hair types, including those with sensitive scalps, illness-related hair changes and chronic irritation, reporting thicker, shinier and healthier hair.

Sue, a Sozo customer, summed it up simply:

“I’m confident with my hair again. My hairdresser even noticed the change in thickness and growth between appointments.”

Inside the Complete Scalp & Haircare Bundle

The Sozo Complete Scalp & Haircare Bundle is the brand’s best-selling set, designed for anyone ready to commit to a proper routine without guesswork. It covers prewash, wash and post-wash care in one cohesive system.

Prewash: Scalp & Hair Health Serum

This ultra-lightweight oil works overtime as both a treatment and styling essential.

Used as a prewash oil at least once a week, it helps soothe inflammation, stimulate circulation and strengthen the hair follicle.

Ingredients like rosemary leaf oil, argan oil, aloe vera, jojoba esters and macadamia seed oil nourish without heaviness.

Customers with frizz, curls and dryness consistently rave about its versatility, with one calling it “the best hair serum I have ever used”.

Wash: Hair Health Shampoo

Natural shampoos are notorious for weak lather and ineffective cleansing.

This one breaks the stereotype. Using sulphate-free, naturally derived surfactants, it delivers a rich foam that removes build-up while keeping the scalp calm and hydrated.

Double shampooing is encouraged for optimal scalp health, especially if you use styling products or live an active lifestyle.

Condition: Hair Health Conditioner

Lightweight but deeply nourishing, this silicone-free conditioner can be applied to both scalp and hair.

It smooths, hydrates and adds shine without flattening volume, making it ideal for fine hair and sensitive scalps alike.

Weekly treatment: Hair Health Mask

This is where repair meets comfort. Formulated with manuka honey, the mask deeply nourishes damaged hair while soothing the scalp.

Unlike heavy treatments that leave residue, this mask rinses clean and can be used weekly or more often depending on need. It can even replace conditioner on treatment days.

Post-wash protection: Bamboo Microfibre Hair Towel

Hair is most fragile when wet. Swapping a standard cotton towel for bamboo microfibre reduces friction, speeds up drying time and helps prevent frizz and breakage.

Lightweight, soft and surprisingly luxurious, it is a small switch with a big impact.

Gentle detangling: Detangling Hairbrush

Designed to glide through knots without pulling, this brush minimises breakage and makes post-wash care far less traumatic, especially for long, thick or textured hair.

Finish and style: Scalp & Hair Health Serum

Used again post-wash, the serum protects against heat, boosts shine and hydrates dry ends without weighing hair down. A few drops go a long way, making it suitable for daily styling or between wash days.

The habits that make it work

Products matter, but habits seal the deal. Sozo encourages regular washing based on scalp needs, limiting heat where possible, drying hair before bed and protecting strands from UV damage.

Small shifts like switching to soft scrunchies and brushing ends first can dramatically reduce breakage over time.

Hair health is not about chasing quick fixes. It is about consistency, patience and using products that work with your body, not against it.

For anyone stepping into 2026 ready to stop fighting their hair and start supporting it properly, Sozo Australia offers a refreshingly grounded solution.

No gimmicks, no harsh chemicals, just thoughtful, natural haircare that delivers the kind of results people notice.

The queen of country music is bringing her brand of Southern hospitality to Tennessee highways — making the trip to Nashville feel as memorable and fun as the destination itself.

Dolly Parton recently announced the roll-out of Dolly’s Tennessean Travel Stops. The rest-stop areas will feature new and reimagined entertainment elements.

“I have spent the bulk of my life on the road, and more specifically on a bus,” said Parton in a release.

Parton has partnered with the Tennessean Travel Stop brand to relaunch their flagship stop in Cornersville, Tennessee, with additional locations to be announced in 2026.

George D. Hay is credited with founding the musical treasure, having started radio station WSM — which went live for the first time in October 1925. The program, originally called “WSM’s Barn Dance,” also launched at that time.

The prominent announcer and program director launched the show with Uncle Jimmy Thompson, a 77-year-old fiddle player.

The name of the now-iconic brand — which includes a program, a live performance and a location — came from Hay in a burst of inspiration.

The Opry grew so popular that the broadcast was moved to the Ryman Auditorium in downtown Nashville in 1943.

The Opry then built its own theater and country-music campus, Opryland, in 1974, about 10 miles east of the city center.

Parton told Airmail she was on stage at the Ryman Auditorium in 1969 when she was inducted into the Opry.

“When I moved to Nashville, it was known that if you couldn’t find someone backstage, there was a good chance they were at the bar at Tootsie’s,” said Parton.

“Years back, many of the great Opry performers and I filmed a segment there for my variety series, ‘Dolly.’”
