FDA just greenlighted an at-home flu vaccine. What the approval of a self-administered spray means for you.

0

You can now vaccinate yourself — or your children — against the flu with a nasal spray. On Sept. 20, the Food and Drug Administration approved the first-ever vaccine that adults can give themselves or caregivers can administer to others. The same nasal spray, FluMist, has been approved since 2003 but previously had to be administered by a pharmacist or other health care provider.

Read on for what you need to know about the new nasal spray flu vaccine.

The nasal spray vaccine has been around for two decades and was initially approved for pharmacists or health care providers to give to people ages 5 to 49. In 2007, the approval was expanded to include children as young as 2 years old. FluMist comes in a single-dose sprayer, and half of the dose is sprayed into each nostril.

Aside from being given as a nasal spray rather than as an injection, FluMist also differs from the flu shot in that it contains what’s known as live-attenuated flu virus. That means it contains a version of the virus that has been weakened but not killed. By contrast, flu shots contain an inactivated or dead form of the virus. However, the nasal spray vaccine won’t cause influenza illness. According to the FluMist package insert, the flu spray is about as effective as the shot: 45%, compared to between 40% and 60% for the injection.

A self-administered version of the flu vaccine has been in the works for a long time. But you’ll have to wait a little longer before you can order yours. The FDA says that it should be broadly available for next flu season (beginning in 2025). However, for those who prefer a nasal spray vaccine for themselves or their children, it’s already available at many pharmacies and doctor’s offices; it just can’t be taken at home. Instead, a pharmacist or health care provider will administer the vaccine.

Yahoo Life reached out to FluMist’s manufacturer, AstraZeneca, to ask when the product might be available for at-home use but had not received a response at the time of publication. But the most likely reason FluMist is not yet available is that data on how effectively people are able to vaccinate themselves and their children needs to be collected, Dr. Davey Smith, chief of infectious diseases and global public health at the University of California, San Diego, tells Yahoo Life.

FluMist is approved for anyone between ages 2 and 49. “I’m really hoping that we can get more people vaccinated [with FluMist approved for home use], including children and people who have needle aversions,” says Smith. “There are all sorts of impediments in our health care system anyway, so hopefully this is one less.”

But you’ll need to meet the eligibility requirements. Neither the FDA, FluMist, nor AstraZeneca has said outright what these criteria are. But Smith says the questionnaire will most likely ask people’s ages to make sure they are not under 2 or over 49, or taking any medications that might not mix well with the vaccine. For example, people between ages 2 and 17 who are taking aspirin shouldn’t take FluMist or other live-attenuated vaccines because the combination has been linked to greater risks of a rare but serious condition called Reye’s syndrome. Pregnant women also should not take the nasal vaccine since it may pose risks to the fetus. However, it’s important to note that the injected flu shot is safe and recommended for pregnant women.

The FDA also says that people with weakened immune systems and certain allergies should not take FluMist and other live-attenuated virus vaccines. It’s not approved for use in people age 50 and older either. Smith explains why: An injected flu vaccine activates an immune response throughout the body, but FluMist is more localized. Because the immune system declines with age, FluMist may not trigger an equally strong response to the shot in older people.

Yes, say experts. The weakened but living virus in the nasal spray is “cold-temperature-adapted, so it reproduces itself in the nose, which is cooler than the core body temperature,” Dr. Paul Offit, director of the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia’s Vaccine Education Center, tells Yahoo Life. “But it doesn’t reproduce itself in the lungs,” where it would cause infection.

FluMist’s side effects are similar to those associated with the shot: a runny nose and nasal congestion, fever in kids ages 2 to 6 and sore throat for adults, according to the FDA.

The process is not very different from using the allergy nasal spray Flonase, Smith says, and involves inserting the flu nasal spray into the nostril, pushing the plunger to administer the vaccine and then repeating in the other nostril. Smith says he has no concerns about people being able to give the flu nasal spray to themselves or their children. “People use Flonase and have forever … this is going to be pretty easy, that’s the whole point,” he says. In AstraZeneca’s trial, 100% of adults were able to administer a full dose to themselves.

The ease of giving the nasal spray vaccine is good news for both kids and needle-nervous people, as well as for public health, says Offit. The availability of FluMist for use at home “should make it more likely that people will get the flu vaccine,” he says. “There is no reason one shouldn’t be able to administer this vaccine intranasally without help of a health care person, and I think this will only have the effect of increasing vaccine rates.”

However, Offit says he hopes to see more data on how effectively parents and caregivers administer the spray to their children. Still, “I think this will only have the effect of improving vaccination rates,” which have been declining since the COVID-19 pandemic began, dropping to 50% as of last year.

The unspoken rules of celebrating Oktoberfest in Munich

0

Oktoberfest is a worldwide phenomenon, a Bavarian beer festival celebrated in countries around the globe.

But many say nowhere is it more fun than in its original home of Munich. The festival attracts some six million celebrants every year, according to a festival website operated by Munich’s Department of Labor and Economics.

As a non-Bavarian German, I visit Munich regularly and have learned a few things about attending the festival, known simply as the “Wiesn.” Here’s my advice.

What to wear

The dress code for many is the traditional Bavarian dirndl, for women, and lederhosen, for men. In stark contrast to other parts of the world, you won’t be accused of cultural misappropriation here — in fact, the locals invite international visitors to dress in traditional costumes.

Revelers, dressed in leather lederhosen, celebrate Oktoberfest in Munich on Sept. 21, 2024.

These outfits are available at any budget, from inexpensive wear-once costumes to vintage and bespoke clothing rentals.

A couple of things to bear in mind: Lederhosen is plural, so one pair of leather trousers is simply a lederhose. These are Bavarian-style outfits, not German as many travelers believe. Travel north, and you will not see them — except for Oktoberfest, of course.

From ordering to tipping

Beer is not served in steins, as many believe, but in glasses called a “mass,” which is one liter of beer. The servers carry up to six mass in each hand, weighing roughly 12 kilograms (26 pounds). Servers are paid a percentage of the beer and food they serve, plus tips. So tip well, please.

To get their attention, servers wear a clothespin with their name on it, but they also answer to the relaxed address of ‘du’ —  which means “you” in German.

Revelers hold the mass by the handle so they can easily clink glasses and drink to toasts. When the band calls out: “Ein Prosit, ein Prosit der Gemütlichkeit. Oans, zwoa, driel g’suffa!” — which translates to “A toast, a toast to fun and friendliness. One, two, three, drink up!” — merrymakers are expected to finish their glasses and reorder.

Why is Oktoberfest celebrated in September?

The inaugural Octoberfest was held in October of 1810 in Munich to celebrate the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig to Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen. Through the years, the festival grew into a 16-day celebration which was often affected by rain in October. By 1905, the festival shifted to late September and always ends on the first Sunday in October.

At other times, they practice “Schunkeln,” linking arms and swaying to the music.

Women: if you wear a dirndl, watch where you tie your bow. Ties on the right traditionally mean you are single and open to flirting.

More than beer

Oktoberfest is all about beer, which is specially brewed for the event and quite strong (above 6%). But there is also wine, Apfelschorle (a beverage made of carbonated water and apple juice), alcohol-free beer, soft drinks and water.

Across the Wiesn, there are myriad food stalls, serving gigantic pretzels, called brezen, meats like bratwurst, weisswurst and schnitzel, plus fries, curries and so much more.

Munich must-do’s

Within easy walking distance from the Theresienwiese — which means “”Therese’s meadow,” which is where the festival is held — travelers can visit the Sendlinger Tor, a former city gate, and the Viktualienmarkt, a lovely market.

The historic old town is also nearby, which is home to the former royal palace, Residenz Palace, the world-famous Hofbräuhaus, and the Beer and Oktoberfest Museum.

For a day trip from the city, the jaw-dropping Neuschwanstein Castle is a 90-minute drive from Munich. Salzburg, in Austria, is less than two hours away by train — a gorgeous city, as is the picture-postcard-perfect town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, north of Munich.

After all that beer, a day relaxing among the snowcapped Alps at Lake Starnberg can be considered too.

Oktoberfest around the world

Those who can’t make it to Munich, worry not. There are fantastic festivals around the world to experience the tradition, fun, and food and drink.

One of the largest celebrations is in Hong Kong. The Marco Polo German Bierfest has all of the festival’s trappings, plus views of Hong Kong Harbour.

In the United States, a large festival occurs in Cincinnati, Ohio, and in South America in Blumenau, Brazil.

Those not keen on crowds can try another annual German celebration — the Spring Festival. It’s held in the same place, Munich’s Theresienwiese, but has fewer tents, and in many ways can be just as much fun.

BRIAN COX WARNS THE WORLD ABOUT WORKPLACE MENTAL HEALTH THREAT IN PSA FOR ASICS

0

Global study shows that our mental state starts to decline after only two hours of continuous desk-based working, but just 15 minutes of exercise can help to reverse the effects

  • ASICS enlists Brian Cox to take on the role of the world’s scariest boss to highlight the real threat to our mental health – the desk we work at every day.
  • A global study shows our mental state starts to decline after only two hours of continuous desk-based working with stress levels rising significantly after four hours. However, ASICS’s Desk Break experiment shows just 15 minutes of exercise can help to reverse the effects.
  • The Public Service Announcement urges office workers to take a Desk Break to move their minds.

LONDON, Sept. 24, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — Ahead of World Mental Health Day on 10 October, ASICS has enlisted actor Brian Cox to deliver a warning to the world to get away from their desks and move for their mental health in a powerful Public Service Announcement (PSA).

ASICS’ global State of Mind study, involving 26,000 participants, revealed a strong connection between sedentary behaviour and mental wellbeing with State of Mind scores declining the longer individuals remain inactive1. Further research into desk-based working found that after just two hours of continuous desk work State of Mind scores begin to drop and stress levels rise2. After four hours of uninterrupted desk time, workers’ stress levels increased significantly by 18%. However, a new Desk Break experiment3 shows that just 15 minutes of movement can help to reverse the effects.

The Desk Break experiment, overseen by Dr Brendon Stubbs from King’s College London, found that when office workers added just 15 minutes of movement into their working day, their mental state improved by 22.5% with participants’ overall State of Mind scores increasing from 62/100 to 76/100. The experiment showed that taking a daily Desk Break for just one week lowered stress levels by 14.7%, boosted productivity by 33.2% and improved focus by 28.6%. Participants reported feeling 33.3% more relaxed and 28.6% more calm and resilient. 79.2% of participants said they would be more loyal to their employers if offered regular movement breaks.

In the PSA, Brian Cox plays the role of the world’s scariest boss to highlight the silent threat to our mental health—the desk we work at every day. The PSA calls on office workers to put their mental health first by taking a Desk Break, a short movement break, during the working day.

Watch the ASICS Desk Break PSA here.

Emmy award winning actor Brian Cox said: “I’ve played some pretty intimidating characters in my time but who would have thought a desk could be scarier? It’s great to see ASICS try and do something about this and encourage people to support their mental health through exercise. As I say in the film, run, jump, roller skate. I don’t care. Just move for your mind.”

Across the world, ASICS is encouraging its office-based employees to move for their mental health by taking regular movement breaks.

On World Mental Health Day, 10 October 2024, ASICS is inviting office workers to join the #DeskBreak movement and feel the mental benefits. Office workers who are able to take a 15-minute Desk Break* are encouraged to share an image of their empty desk, with images shared raising funds for mental health charities around the world.

Dr Brendon Stubbs, a leading researcher in exercise and mental health from King’s College London, said: We have shown previously that just 15 minutes of exercise in leisure time can result in a meaningful improvement in people’s State of Mind scores. But what surprised us with the Desk Break experiment was how powerful the 15 minute movement breaks were in improving wellbeing and reducing stress. It even changed people’s perceptions of their workplace for the better.”

Tomoko Koda, Managing Executive Officer for ASICS comments: “At ASICS, we champion the power of movement, not just on the body, but also on the mind. It’s why we’re called ASICS – an acronym for the Latin ‘Anima Sana in Corpore Sano’ or ‘Sound Mind in a Sound Body’. Our global study revealed that the hours spent at your desk for hours on end are having a real and scary impact on our minds. That’s why we wanted to deliver a powerful message from the world’s scariest boss to inspire people to move their minds.

“We hope to encourage office workers around the world to move and feel the mental benefits. We look forward to seeing the empty desk images on World Mental Health Day.”

NOTES TO EDITORS

1 The 2024 State of Mind Study was conducted between 17 November – 21 December 2023 and explored the relationship between exercise and State of Mind across the world. Over 26,000 people were surveyed across 22 markets including Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Colombia, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Thailand, UAE, the UK and the US. Each market sample was nationally representative of age and gender.

2 Global research was conducted in September 2024 to further explore the impact of daily and continuous desk work on our State of Mind. Over 7,000 desk-based workers were surveyed across US, UK, Australia, Japan, the Netherlands, Germany and Brazil. Each market sample was nationally representative of age and gender.

3The ASICS Desk Break Experiment ran from 15th to 26th July 2024, led by Dr Brendon Stubbs of King’s College London & University of Vienna. The experiment studied 80 desk-based office workers from Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Thailand, United Kingdom, USA and the UAE. All passed health screening questionnaires and completed consent forms before taking part.

About ASICS

At ASICS, our five letters have meaning. ASICS is an acronym for the Latin Anima Sana In Corpore Sano or a Sound Mind in a Sound Body. And since our founding in 1949, our purpose has been to help people achieve a Sound Mind in a Sound Body.

Right from the very start, our founder, Kihachiro Onitsuka, saw that sport and movement had the power to lift spirits, project positivity, and propel people and whole communities forward. We still believe this.

And we believe our purpose is more relevant today than ever before. Stress and anxiety are at record levels, yet we know sport and movement can have a positive impact. Which is why we remain focused on supporting more people to move for positive mental health.

Professor Luo Min Appointed as Chairman of Spine Neurocardiology Interdisciplinary Professional Committee in China to Promote Development of Innovative Heart Disease Treatments

0

BEIJING, Sept. 23, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — Professor Luo Min, Doctor of Medicine (MD), from Beijing Yuhe Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine Rehabilitation Hospital, was recently appointed as the Chairman of the National Association of Health Industry and Enterprise Management (NAHIEM) Spine Neurocardiology Interdisciplinary Professional Committee and the Head of the Preparatory Group, in recognition of his contributions to the field of spinal nerve and heart disease treatment.

Professor Luo Min
Professor Luo Min

As the head of the NAHIEM Spine Neurocardiology Interdisciplinary Professional Committee’s Preparatory Group, Professor Luo will be responsible for leading the organization and preparing the committee to solidify its commitment to the promotion of interdisciplinary research and cooperation, a field in which he excels. The committee will advance the development and application of innovative therapies by supporting research on spinal nerves and heart diseases, which have the potential to benefit more heart disease patients in China and around the world.

Professor Luo commented, “I am deeply honored to be appointed to this important role. The integration of interdisciplinary research has the potential to bring new hope to more heart disease patients in China and globally. Interdisciplinary research is the future of heart disease treatment and I believe that neuromodulation can bring safer and more effective treatment options to patients. I look forward to promoting technical exchanges and cooperation around the world through the work of the committee.”

Professor Luo is a senior expert in the field of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases with more than 30 years of experience in clinical diagnosis and multidisciplinary research. He graduated from Bethune Medical University and has since studied in multiple disciplines including orthopedics, neurology, general surgery, anesthesiology, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular medicine, and critical care medicine. His primary focus in recent years has been on the neuromodulation treatment of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, and he has been credited with developing Luo’s Theory, which has the potential to bring revolutionary breakthroughs in clinical treatment.

Professor Luo discovered that spinal nerve abnormalities can cause spasms, contractions, and stenosis of the coronary arteries of the heart, thereby causing myocardial ischemia. Abnormal thoracic sympathetic nerve function is an important and long-ignored cause of coronary heart disease and, as the heart’s coronary vascular system is controlled by thoracic sympathetic nerves, Professor Luo found that abnormal excitation of the sympathetic nerves can trigger coronary artery contractions. Therefore, theoretically, coronary vascular spasms and stenosis through the regulation of the nervous system can be relieved, and cardiac ischemia, especially coronary heart disease and heart failure, can potentially be effectively treated, greatly improving the patient’s prognosis.

Professor Luo has extensive international exchange experience, including his participation in the World Congress of Cardiology in 2019 in Paris, where he was invited to present a report on the role of sympathetic nerves in heart failure, along with a clinical treatment model. He also participated in the 23rd World Congress of International Society for Heart Research (ISHR) in Beijing, and in academic exchanges in Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard University in 2016.

About Professor Luo Min

Professor Luo Min has over 30 years of multidisciplinary clinical consultation experience, and has studied orthopedics, neurology, general surgery, anesthesiology, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular medicine, and critical care medicine. He created the first interdisciplinary physician alliance in China, integrating advanced technologies from multiple disciplines and creating a unique new concept of modern diagnosis and treatment. Professor Luo has independently developed 19 national-level minimally invasive technologies and 12 provincial-level minimally invasive innovations.

Telix to Acquire RLS to Expand North American Manufacturing and Distribution Platform

0

MELBOURNE, Australia, INDIANAPOLIS and LAKE MARY, Fla., Sept. 23, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — Telix Pharmaceuticals Limited (ASX: TLX, Telix, the Company) and RLS (USA) Inc. (RLS, RLS Radiopharmacies), America’s only Joint Commission-accredited radiopharmacy network distributing PET[1], SPECT[2] and therapeutic radiopharmaceuticals, today announced an agreement by the Company to acquire RLS from its parent company, RLS Group Ltd. The acquisition significantly expands Telix’s North American manufacturing footprint and establishes the basis of a next generation radiometal production network to benefit Telix and select strategic commercial partners.

Strategic Rationale

The acquisition of RLS is aligned to Telix’s investment strategy around vertically integrated supply chain, manufacturing, and distribution, further enabling the delivery of future clinical and commercial radiopharmaceutical products. The Company views this as a necessary measure to ensure product integrity and delivery, and to strengthen and complement existing commercial partnerships.

Telix will leverage RLS’ 31 licensed radiopharmacies located in major metropolitan areas across the U.S. to build a radiometal production and distribution network for key therapeutic and diagnostic isotopes alongside last-mile delivery of finished unit doses in relevant markets. The RLS footprint includes over 100,000 square ft of appropriately licensed expansion space that can be utilised to meet rapidly growing production demand. The acquisition also provides a clear pathway to extensively deploy Telix’s ARTMS QUANTM Irradiation System™ (QIS™) cyclotron technology, enabling standardised, high-efficiency and cost-effective production of radiometals.

By augmenting its existing distribution network, Telix aims to provide additional supply chain backup and improve capacity to meet future demand, while broadening access for patients across the entire U.S. market, including under-served populations. The acquisition aligns Telix’s pharmaceutical development workforce with RLS’ highly skilled and multi-disciplinary radiopharmaceutical manufacturing, supply chain and operational expertise.

RLS will continue to service its existing customers and operate as an independent business unit under Telix Manufacturing Solutions (TMS), which includes other key Telix brands with multi-vendor and third-party relationships such as ARTMS, IsoTherapeutics and Optimal Tracers. As part of the TMS business vertical, RLS will become a key node in Telix’s network of U.S. manufacturing and distribution partnerships and is geographically complementary to TMS’ state-of-the-art GMP[3] production facility located in Belgium.

RLS’ revenue for FY23[4] was US$158 million, and the transaction is expected to be cost-neutral to Telix from an operating cash flow perspective. RLS is currently a distributor of Illuccix® and, as such, the acquisition is expected to be accretive to Telix, following completion.

Dr. Christian Behrenbruch, Telix Managing Director and Group Chief Executive Officer, said the acquisition is part of the Company’s ongoing investment focus around vertical integration and building integrated supply chains.

“Our vision is to build a radiometal production and distribution network fit for the future. By combining the ARTMS platform and the RLS network, we can scale up the production of key isotopes and build a stable and consistent supply of PET and SPECT diagnostic tracers, along with therapeutic radiopharmaceuticals across the U.S. for the benefit of Telix, our partners and the patients we serve. Telix is a trusted brand, recognised for our technical expertise, product quality, scheduling flexibility and delivery reliability. As we grow and commercialise new products, this investment ensures we can continue to deliver to this standard, alongside our key trusted distribution partners.”

Mr. Stephen Belcher, Chief Executive Officer, RLS, added, “We look forward to becoming part of the Telix Group ecosystem. The RLS management team has emphasised quality, reliability and flexibility, and by leveraging Telix’s support, we will be able to expand our capabilities further and, together, build the radiopharmaceutical company of the future. We see this as a very positive step for the company, our people and our customer base.”

Deal Terms and Conditions

The purchase price comprises upfront cash consideration of US$230 million before adjustments for cash and cash equivalents (net of restricted cash); debt and debt equivalents; transaction expenses; and working capital, and deferred cash consideration up to a maximum of US$20 million, contingent on achievement of certain milestones related to demonstration of accretive financial and operational performance during the four-quarters following closing. The acquisition and related transaction costs are expected to be funded from existing cash reserves.

Closing of the transaction is subject to customary conditions, including regulatory approvals, RLS shareholder approval, licence transfers and certain third-party consents. The acquisition is expected to close early in the first quarter of 2025.

Over 600 guests discuss international cooperation in digital publishing in Hainan

0

HAIKOU, China, Sept. 22, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — A report from Hainan International Media Center (HIMC):

On September 21, the 14th China International Digital Publishing Expo opened in Haikou, capital city of south China’s Hainan Province. This year’s Expo focuses on topics such as developing new quality productive forces in the publishing industry, creating high-quality digital publishing content, and promoting international cooperation in digital publishing.

Including representatives from international professional organizations such as the Japan Book Publishers Association, Korea Creative Content Agency, and the French Syndicat national de l’édition, over 600 domestic and foreign guests met to share insights and discuss cooperation in digital publishing at the main forum.

In France, digitalization has breathed new life into old books. At the main forum, Virginie Clayssen, chair of Syndicat national de l’édition Digital Commission, introduced their “Relier” project to digitize early 20th century French books with the goal of reviving over 96,000 out-of-print titles through technological means.

Arnout Jacobs, president of Springer Nature Greater China, believes that even with AI’s rapid development, human participation will continue to play an important role in the publishing industry. “AI will not replace humans, but will only become a powerful assistant to humans, helping us to develop more efficiently and faster. In the process of digitalization of the publishing industry, we need to decide which technologies can be used and which should be abandoned, and select those technologies that can help us develop and benefit mankind.”

As it is driven by waves of globalization, the development of digital publishing is bound to move in that direction. Seiichi Higuchi, general legal representative and executive director of the Japan Book Publishers Association, holds the view that the development of digitalization and the technological upgrading of distribution channels are not something that can be solved by a single country on its own. “We must have a clear understanding of the international situation, strengthen international cooperation on the basis of maintaining technical standards and legal coordination, and jointly explore our future direction.”

In building an open digital economy innovation highland, Hainan has become a fertile ground for the digital publishing boom. “Hainan Publishing and Distribution Group is building a digital publishing and copyright trade incubation base that leverages the policy advantages of the safe and orderly flow of data in the free trade port to develop foreign digital cultural trade and promote cultural exports,” said Wu Bin, chairman of Hainan Publishing and Distribution Group.

Over the three days of the Expo, its 30,000m² exhibition area will welcome over 500 publishing companies and cultural and technological enterprises with their new products and projects. It will also showcase new achievements and breakthroughs in international cooperation in digital publishing.

A report released by the China Academy of Press and Publication at the exhibition shows the overall scale of China’s digital publishing industry reached over 1.6 trillion yuan ($0.23 trillion) in 2023, a year-on-year increase of 19.08%.

Travel in time to 5 destinations that salute battles and war heroes right here at home

0

Thoughts of American battlefield heroes might conjure up images of overseas valor in service of oppressed and conquered people around the world.

Capt. John Paul Jones became a legend for the U.S. Navy by leading the Bonhomme Richard to an improbable victory over HMS Serapis off the coast of England during the American Revolution.

The American Expeditionary forged an end to World War I fighting in Western Europe.

The Marines gave America its most heroically memorable image hoisting Old Glory over Iwo Jima in the far reaches of the Pacfiic Ocean in the last months of World War II.

But you don’t need to travel overseas to walk in the footsteps of America’s battlefield heroes or ponder the sacrifice of those who gave their lives here in the United States.

Here’s a look at five U.S. travel destinations that help tell the story of the cost of freedom.

Hawaii — Pearl Harbor

World War II history lives in infamy in the heart of Honolulu, where Pearl Harbor remains a powerful testament to American tragedy and resolve.

USS Arizona Memorial

Visits are highlighted by the haunting memorial to the USS Arizona, which exploded catastrophically Dec. 7, 1941, and which serves as a tomb for 1,102 sailors killed in the Sunday morning attack.

HAWAII’S HIDDEN TREASURES INCLUDE THESE HISTORIC WAR MONUMENTS IN OAHU

Oil still leaks from the ship today, as if the Arizona is still shedding tears, observers have noted. Other attractions include Hickam Field, where U.S. aircraft were destroyed on the ground before they had a chance to fight back, and the USS Missouri.

The mighty battleship was not at Pearl Harbor during the attack, but it floats as a testament to American resolve and triumph.

Japan signed the documents of surrender ending World War II aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay on Sept. 2, 1945, less than four years after the Pearl Harbor attack.

Louisiana — Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve

A sprawling landscape celebrates one of the planet’s unique ecologies and cultures, along with dramatic American history.

The park is located in the heart of bayou country near the mouth of the Mississippi River. Highlights include Chalmette Battlefield, where Andrew Jackson led a highly diverse Army of American people to victory over the British at the end of the War of 1812; and the Chalmette National Cemetery, housing the remains of veterans of that battle, the Civil War and other conflicts.

FROM ALABAMA TO TEXAS, US TRAVEL SPOTS TO SOAK UP AMERICAN SCIENCE AND INNOVATION

Barataria Preserve, a haunting 26,000-acre wilderness of hardwood forests and bayous, offers a chance to observe alligators and other swamp creatures in their natural habitat.

Maryland — Annapolis

Navy graduation

There may be no better place to celebrate the nation’s ties to the seas than in Maryland’s capital, also briefly the nation’s capital in 1783, when the Treaty of Paris was signed, ending the American Revolution.

Annapolis is home to the U.S. Naval Academy and known as the “Sailing Capital of the United States.” Its Colonial-era downtown is a great place to explore and enjoy Maryland’s signature oysters and crabs at local hot spots such as Middleton’s or Cantler’s.

Mississippi — Vicksburg National Military Park

Vicksburg

The Civil War Siege of Vicksburg ended after six weeks with a victory by Ulysses S. Grant’s Union troops July 4, 1863, the day after federal forces repelled Pickett’s Charge to claim victory 1,000 miles to the northeast in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.

Vicksburg’s haunting park today is highlighted by some 1,400 memorials and markers, representing all 32 states that sent men to fight there, and two major cemeteries of both Confederate and Union war dead.

The national park’s attractions also include the USS Cairo Gunboat and Museum, featuring the ironclad Union vessel that patrolled the Mississippi River. Success at Vicksburg helped catapult Grant to the head of the Union army the following year and, eventually, the presidency.

But his ruthless siege nearly starved the people of Vicksburg. The city would not celebrate the Fourth of July again until 1947 during a visit and speech by World War II hero Gen. Dwight Eisenhower.

Pennsylvania — Gettysburg National Military Park

Gettysburg, Pennsylvania

The stunning human cost of preserving the nation is seen in this sprawling battlefield in rural south-central Pennsylvania.

Gettysburg pitted about 160,000 men in a pitched three-day battle that turned the tide of the Civil War in favor of the Union. Some 50,000 soldiers of both sides were killed or wounded. It remains the largest battle in North American history.
