You’ll never want your shower to end with these 9 accessories, all under $20

0

One of life’s great pleasures is winding down with a nice shower after a long day. But what if your water pressure is wimpy, shampoo bottles are everywhere and the shower floor is slippery? Yeah, not so relaxing after all. But all of these inconveniences have simple solves, and we’ve rounded ’em up right here.

Take this high-pressure showerhead, for instance. It’ll improve water flow and is a cinch to install. And as far as clutter is concerned? We found a sleek set of adhesive shelves and a clever shower curtain lined with pockets to keep things tidy. Oh, and this nonslip loofah-esque mat will prevent you from sliding around (and feels like a dream against your feet). Keep scrolling to see how else you can give your shower an easy upgrade — nothing on this list tops $20!

Amazon

Swapping a sad trickle of water for a vigorous stream is arguably the best upgrade a shower can get — and this top-selling showerhead makes it easy. It has five different spray modes including rain, massage and mist, so you’ll be able to customize your H2O pressure to your liking. Plus, it doesn’t require any tools and can be installed in a minute, according to the manufacturer.

“My girlfriend and I recently stayed at a luxury hotel we could barely afford and the shower was so amazing there that I had to call the hotel to find out the brand of showerhead,” explained a fan. “Needless to say, it was prohibitively expensive, so I decided to try this one, and it did not disappoint! The pressure, settings and flow are all phenomenal, I can’t recommend this product enough.”

Get ready for a blissful bathing sesh, thanks to this genius scrubber that can be mounted on the wall to scratch your back or placed on the floor to massage your feet. Not only will it feel like heaven, its bristles will also help clean hard-to-reach places, like between your toes, without you needing to bend over.

“This scrubber works great for cleaning my feet,” raved a shopper. “The gazillion little silicone bristles provide a gentle scrub to clean my toes, heels and instep. The suction cups provide a firm grip to the tub so I am safe to stand on the scrubber. I have also placed it on the shower wall to see if it could be used effectively to scrub my back. It can. It seems to be made well. I anticipate getting several years of use from it.”

Loofahs aren’t just for hanging in the shower. Get a load of this cushy mat, which was inspired by those bouncy cleaning accessories. Your feet will be treated to a massage-like sensation while being spared from cold tub or tile floors. It has a nonslip backing, plus all of those little drain holes help water flow through, allowing it to dry more quickly.

“I needed a mat I could trust not to cause me to slip and fall, and this one is the absolute best!” exclaimed an enthusiast. “It stays put, plus you get the soles of your feet massaged. I just roll it up, after use, to dry. No more suction cups to mildew. I will definitely buy again!”

A shower floor that isn’t littered with bottles? Yes, please! Imagine how much more pleasant washing your hair will be when you’re not constantly tripping over toiletries. This wildly popular set claims to hold up to 40 pounds (that’s a lot of conditioner) and comes with five storage racks in different sizes to neatly corral all your bathtime essentials. All you need to do is apply the included adhesives to stick ’em on the wall.

“I hated the containers that hung from your shower head,” said a shopper. “They were often clunky and not very spacious, so I looked into this alternative. So glad I made the purchase. Completely transforms the showering dynamic. Everything is organized and there’s plenty of space to spare. It looks very minimalistic but gives the shower a really nice modern look.”

Want to keep your shower walls clear? This ingenious shower liner has built-in pockets to tidy up your bath products. There are nine mesh cubbies in assorted sizes, and each one can hold about a pound. Yeah, we wish we’d invented it too.

“I live in an apartment with one of those pre-fab showers,” wrote a buyer. “This shower curtain is great because it helps keep the actual shower corners clean and neat. I keep my products on the inside, where I can get what I need when I am in the shower. If it goes bad in a year, I will easily buy another. To me, the pure convenience of its space-saving capabilities is perfect. If you have a tiny apartment bathroom like I do, this will make your shower or bath more luxurious-feeling.”

While this waterproof phone holder probably won’t be great for your water bill, it’ll certainly make your shower experience all the more enjoyable. Now you’ll be able to watch movies and TV shows while shampooing your hair, and because it comes with an adhesive mount, it couldn’t be easier to attach to the wall. It’s even got a touchscreen so you can switch between shows — dangerous, I tell ya!

“Best purchase ever,” wrote a buyer. “I love reading in the shower after work, and this thing has helped me out so much. It is durable, the adhesive is great and the touchscreen works flawlessly. 10/10 recommend.”

Singing in the shower is better when you have actual music to back you up. This little speaker provides just that, and you don’t have to worry about getting it wet because it’s water-resistant. It works within 33 feet of whatever device it’s paired with, and you’ll get up to 6 hours of playtime via its rechargeable battery. Tell your significant other they’ve been warned — shower karaoke is on

“This thing is awesome!” gushed a fan. “I pair it to my iPhone and it takes one or two seconds to link up … The phone can be 20 feet away in the next room and it’s no problem. … The sound volume is loud and clear, which is needed since the shower is loud. The controls are easy to manage, and you can easily change the volume or skip the song. The suction cup holds very well on the glass shower door. I have had it for five months and have only had to charge it once or twice. I don’t use it every day, and my showers are short, but I am sure that the battery life is good.”

Pair that new shower liner with this waffle-weave beauty to instantly give your shower a more luxe appearance. Its waterproof coating helps repel moisture and the weighted hem keeps it from swishing all around. You might not be able to stay in a hotel every night, but at least your shower will look like it’s from one.

“Beautiful,” swooned a reviewer. “This shower curtain is so pretty and gives the bathroom a spa-like feel. The waffle pattern is very nice and the material is just heavy enough to hang perfectly.”

Bath bombs might be common gifts, but there’s nothing that says you can’t reward yourself with these sensory steamers. This No. 1 bestselling pack is made with natural essential oils to fill your bathroom with the fresh, calming scent of lavender. Just pop one into the tub and it’ll release its aroma while the water melts it away.

“I love that these are individually sealed so they don’t start degrading once the bag is opened,” shared a reviewer. “It smells so good and lasts 20 minutes for me. It makes a normal shower a luxurious, spa-like experience.”

New England packs a lot of U.S.A. in a little corner of America.

Its six states combined would rank only 18th among the 50 states.

Visitors driving north up Interstate 95 can leave New York – not New England – and drive clear across Connecticut and Rhode Island, north through Massachusetts, zip through coastal New Hampshire and arrive in southern Maine in just five hours.

That’s five states, 10% of all of them, in a single afternoon, missing only the sixth New England state — beautiful, rural Vermont.

KANSAS CITY HOME TO AMERICA’S BEST BARBECUE, CHEFS CLAIM ‘OUR VARIETY MAKES US UNIQUE’

There’s plenty to see along the way. Among the options are plenty of coastlines, the sites that gave birth to the United States and spectacular autumn foliage.

Here is one must-see site in these six New England states.

Connecticut – Mystic Seaport

America’s largest maritime museum brings the nation’s sailing heritage to life today with its historic New England oceanfront village, exhibits, period arts and crafts, and vessels such as the Charles W. Morgan, the world’s last remaining wooden whale ship.

The area is still essential to the nation’s maritime heritage today.

The U.S. Navy submarine fleet is headquartered a few miles west in Groton, where visitors can explore the USS Nautilus and Submarine Force Museum.

Maine – Acadia National Park

The majestic park offers the most spectacular example of New England’s famously rugged rocky coast.

The Atlantic Ocean gives way to a granite shoreline, then sprawling pinewood forests and stunning terrain highlighted by Cadillac Mountain, the highest peak on the eastern seaboard.

FALL LEAF-PEEPING NEW ENGLAND TRAVEL HAS AMERICANS EYEING 6 STATES AND DATES

Visitors also experience Maine’s unique downeast culture — complete with its own curious accent.

It offers a postcard landscape of lobster boats anchored in snug coves, quaint coastal villages of artists and boat builders, with havens for rock climbers, snowmobilers and ice fishermen.

Massachusetts – Minute Man National Historical Park

This serpentine park meandering through woodlands and town squares west of Boston tells the heroic tale of April 19, 1775, when 80 armed American civilians stood their ground on Lexington Common as 700 British troops, agents of the most powerful king in the world, pressed down upon them.

The Redcoats were looking to capture local munitions and rebel leaders Sam Adams and John Hancock. “Throw down ye arms,” a British officer commanded.

The outnumbered Americans did not surrender their arms. The “shot heard ‘round the world” rang out — and the American Revolution had begun.

MEET THE AMERICAN WHO LED 77 MINUTEMEN AGAINST 700 REDCOATS AT BATTLE OF LEXINGTON: CAPTAIN JOHN PARKER

The Lexington minutemen were quickly overrun, eight of them killed; but they had bought time as the call to arms spread across the countryside. The growing American force at Concord a few miles west greeted the British and turned them back.

Soon, thousands of colonists chased the Redcoats all the way back to Boston, decimating their ranks along the way. “What a Glorious Morning for America,” the street signs of Lexington still read today.

New Hampshire – Mount Washington

Mount Washington, New Hampshire

The centerpiece of the Presidential Range of the White Mountains is nothing less than the tallest peak in the northeast (6,288 feet). More famously, Mount Washington habitually witnesses the globe’s most severe weather — due to its elevation and its location at the convergence of several major storm patterns.

Mount Washington’s brutal wind and cold is proclaimed locally as a testament to the hearty nature of “Live Free or Die” state residents. The summit held the record for highest wind speed ever recorded (231 mph) for several decades and reached a record low temperate of -50 degrees Fahrenheit in January 1885.

The Mount Washington Observatory recorded a wind chill of -103 degrees as recently as 2004.

The mountain today is a popular attraction for tourists, who ascend the top via hiking trail, precarious auto road or popular cog railway.

Rhode Island – Newport Mansions

The wealth of the Gilded Age springs to life in Newport, where the nation’s titans of 19th-century industry built ostentatious summer homes on the cliffs where scenic Narragansett Bay meets the Atlantic Ocean.

The Breakers, owned by railroad tycoon Cornelius Vanderbilt II, is probably the most spectacular, built of limestone in the ornate style of an Italian palazzo. Newport’s legacy as a playground of wealthy lives on today around its charming and busy New England downtown waterfront.

The city is home to the International Tennis Hall of Fame and hosted the America’s Cup, the world’s premier sailing race, for decades.

Vermont – Lake Champlain

It has loomed large in both Native and European American history.

Lake Champlain divided the Mohawks to the west and Abenaki to the east, while British and continental forces fought for control of the 107 mile-long lake throughout the American Revolution.

Lake Champlain today is a perfect place to enjoy the pristine wilderness and especially the autumn foliage of northern New England — or to search for Champy.

Rome could charge entry to historic landmark in latest attempt to tackle overtourism

Visiting an 18th-century fountain in Rome could start costing you more than the coin you toss in the water.

Italian officials are considering allocating time slots to visit the historic Trevi Fountain to help curb tourists overcrowding the area.

Drafted plans reveal the fountain would require timed reservations to be made in advance, limiting the number of people allowed to access the steps, Reuters reported.

In 2022, there was 1.4 million euros ($1.52 million) collected in coins that were thrown into the Trevi Fountain.

The measure would include officials asking non-residents to make a “symbolic” contribution of around $1 or $2 while residents would be able to access the fountain for free.

The Trevi Fountain’s name derives from a toponym in use in the area since the mid-20th century, according to city of Rome’s government tourist site.

Approximately six million Americans traveled to Italy in 2023, according to the State Department.

U.S. airlines cool hiring after adding 194,000 employees in post-Covid spree

Leslie Josephs/CNBC

U.S. passenger airlines have added nearly 194,000 jobs since 2021 as companies went on a hiring spree after spending months in a pandemic slump, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation. Now the industry is cooling its hiring.

Airlines are close to their staffing needs but the slowdown is also coming in part because they’re facing a slew of challenges.

A glut of flights in the U.S. has pushed down fares and eaten into airlines’ profits. Demand growth has moderated. Airplanes are arriving late from Boeing and Airbus, prompting airlines to rethink their expansions. Engines are in short supply. Some carriers are deferring airplane deliveries altogether. And labor costs have climbed after groups like pilots and mechanics signed new contracts with big raises, their first in years.

Annual pay for a three-year first officer on midsized equipment at U.S. airlines averaged $170,586 in March, up from $135,896 in 2019, according to Kit Darby, an aviation consultant who specializes in pilot pay.

Since 2019, costs at U.S. carriers have climbed by double-digit percentages. Stripping out fuel and net interest expenses, they’ll be up about 20% at American Airlines this year and around 28% higher at both United Airlines and Delta Air Lines from 2019, according to Raymond James airline analyst Savanthi Syth.

It is more pronounced at low-cost airlines. Southwest Airlines‘ costs will likely be up 32%, JetBlue Airways‘ up nearly 35% and Spirit Airlines will see a rise of almost 39% over the same period, estimated Syth, whose data is adjusted for flight length.

Easing hiring

Friday’s U.S. jobs report showed air transportation employment in August roughly in line with July’s.

But there have been pullbacks. In the most severe case, Spirit Airlines furloughed 186 pilots this month, their union said Sunday, as the carrier’s losses have grown in the wake of a failed acquisition by JetBlue Airways, a Pratt & Whitney engine recall and an oversupplied U.S. market. Last year, even before the merger fell apart, it offered staff buyouts.

Other airlines are easing hiring or finding other ways to cut costs.

Frontier Airlines is still hiring pilots but said it will offer voluntary leaves of absence in September and October, when demand generally dips after the summer holidays but before Thanksgiving and winter breaks. A spokeswoman for the carrier said it offers those leaves “periodically” for “when our staffing levels exceed our planned flight schedules.”

Southwest Airlines expects to end the year with 2,000 fewer employees compared with 2023 and earlier this year said it would halt hiring classes for work groups including pilots and flight attendants. CFO Tammy Romo said on an earnings call in July that the company’s headcount would likely be down again in 2025 as attrition levels exceed the Dallas-based carrier’s “controlled hiring levels.”

United Airlines, which paused pilot hiring in May and June, citing late-arriving planes from Boeing, said it plans to add 10,000 people this year, down from 15,000 in both 2022 and 2023. It plans to hire 1,600 pilots, down from more than 2,300 last year.

It’s a departure from the previous years when airlines couldn’t hire employees fast enough. U.S. airlines are usually adding pilots constantly since they are required to retire at age 65 by federal law.

Airlines shed tens of thousands of employees in 2020 to try to stem record losses. Packages of more than $50 billion in taxpayer aid that were passed to get the industry through its worst-ever crisis prohibited layoffs, but many employees took carriers up on their repeated offers of buyouts and voluntary leaves.

Then, travel demand snapped back faster than expected, climbing in earnest in 2022 and leaving airlines without experienced employees like customer service agents. It also led to the worst pilot shortage in recent memory.

In response, companies — especially regional carriers — offered big bonuses to attract pilots.

But times have changed. Even air freight giants were competing for pilots in recent years but demand has waned as FedEx and UPS look to cut costs.

American Airlines CEO Robert Isom said in an investor presentation in March that the carrier added about 2,300 pilots last year and that it expects to hire about 1,300 this year.

“We will be hiring for the foreseeable future at levels like that,” he said at the time.

Despite the lower targets, students continue to fill classrooms and cockpits to train and build up hours to become pilots, said Ken Byrnes, chairman of the flight department at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

“Demand for travel is still there,” he said. “I don’t see a long-term slowdown.”

Yiwugo: Pearls and Silver Jewelry Take the Global Accessories Market by Storm

0

YIWU, China, Sept. 6, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — Yiwugo.com, the official website of the Yiwu Commodity Market, is the largest commodity wholesale market in the world. As a long-standing popular export category from Yiwu to overseas markets, accessories have performed exceptionally well this year. According to Yiwugo’s big data analysis, keywords like “bracelets” have topped the platform’s hot search terms over the past two months, with silver jewelry and pearl accessories garnering the most attention.

Ms. Xu Yuanyuan, who has been in the silver jewelry export business for over ten years, has seen great success both online and offline internationally. Her company’s design team is highly creative, frequently launching bestsellers. In response to domestic demand, Xu opened a new store in March this year, named Apotie Jewelry, specializing in original pure silver pieces.

Back in 2021, the company designed a Heart Gesture Ring, showcasing their unique ability to merge fashion and sentiment in jewelry design. Within just one month of its launch, a single store sold over 10,000 pieces. The design was so popular that it sparked imitations in various materials, and to this day, the ring maintains high sales figures.

Xu explains that the chief design team plans its new product development for the entire year at the beginning of each year. Each month, they release about 100 to 200 new designs. Apotie Jewelry entered its product planning phase since December 2023 and by the time it opened in March 2024, there were over 1,000 pieces on display and has since maintained a monthly release of over 100 new items. Within just over three months of operation, the sales exceeded 500,000 yuan, with a high customer acquisition rate driven by the Yiwugo platform. The repeat purchase rate surpassed 47%, quickly propelling the company to success.

Ms. Wu Yunfang, who has been in the pearl jewelry industry for 14 years, runs the Fang’s Jewelry, which has been a gold member of Yiwugo for 12 years. In recent years, Wu has noticed a sharp rise in the popularity of pearl jewelry in both domestic and international markets. Not only do middle-aged women love pearls, but younger women have also started embracing pearl accessories.

Pearls, as a natural form of jewelry, often require manual assembly, including stringing and knotting. Foreign buyers frequently comment, “When we see handmade pearl jewelry, we think of Fang’s craftsmanship.” With over a decade of experience in training artisans, Fang’s Jewelry is known for its intricate yet soft craftsmanship, providing both elegance and comfort for customers. This attention to detail is one of the reasons for their high customer retention.

Fang’s Jewelry has a stable supply base for shell pearls, ensuring consistent quality and high luster. Wu’s years of industry experience have honed her excellent color-matching skills, particularly with uniquely shaped nucleated pearls, often leading to striking designs.

There was once a European client who struggled to find a necklace to match his desired look because of the asymmetrical shape of the nucleated pearls he wanted — one end sharp and the other round. After visiting multiple shops without success, he found Wu, who quickly crafted a sample necklace, which led to an immediate order and a lasting partnership.

European customers are known to favor sophisticated shades of gray, and in 2018, amid a market dominated by black and white pearls, Wu captured the hearts of many foreign buyers by introducing pearls in varying shades of gray. It’s common for individual customers to purchase over 200,000 pieces of a single design in a month.

While European markets have traditionally favored gray tones, Wu Yunfang and her team have also broken into this aesthetic with bold combinations like “purple light + white” and “blue + orange”, demonstrating their design prowess. Monthly sales for these standout pieces often reach hundreds of thousands.

Thanks to Yiwugo’s global promotion, many new customers have discovered Fang’s Jewelry through the platform. Most first-time buyers become repeat customers after their initial trial orders. Currently, Wu’s daughter has also begun assisting her in managing the business, and with the new generation’s involvement, the company is poised for a bright future.

Preserving cultural heritage essential for shared future

0

PETALING JAYA, Malaysia, Sept. 6, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — A news report from www.chinadailyasia.com:

Asian media members are an important force for promoting the progress of civilization in the region and serve as a crucial bridge in cultural exchanges, said China Daily’s publisher and editor-in-chief.

Qu Yingpu made the remarks at the Forum on Cultural Heritage Conservation in Malaysia on Thursday.

Qu called on the industry to take responsibility for protecting cultural heritages and to collaborate in bringing down barriers for better collective progress.

Themed “Shared Heritage, Shared Future”, the forum was held by China Daily, and newspaper alliance Asia News Network, with the think tank KSI Strategic Institute for Asia Pacific as a co-organizer.

“We should encourage more people to become involved in the protection of our cultural heritage. We should make our own contribution to the brilliance of Asian civilization in a new era,” Qu said.

Qu highlighted the importance of appreciating and preserving the cultural and natural treasures in Asia, a cradle of human civilization that is home to three ancient civilizations — Mesopotamia, the Indus Valley, and China – and has cultivated numerous vital achievements in human history.

“We have to work together to promote the exchange and mutual learning of Asian cultural heritage,” said Christina Yeo Ken Yin, undersecretary of the International Relations Division in Culture at Malaysia’s Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture.

In addition to cooperation programs in cultural heritage with countries such as China, Thailand, Brunei, Singapore and Indonesia, Yeo said Malaysia is preparing to join the Alliance for Cultural Heritage in Asia — an intergovernmental platform initiated by China to promote regional cooperation in preserving regional cultural heritage.

“Civilization exchanges and mutual learning form an important drive for human progress and global peace and development,” said Chang Shan, counselor of the Chinese embassy in Malaysia.

With Asia being an important cradle of human civilization, China and countries in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations are linked by mountains and rivers and share historical bonds, which have led to close people-to-people exchanges, said Chang.

Noting that this year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Malaysia, Chang said the two countries’ cooperation in cultural heritage protection will continue to play an important role in bilateral exchanges.

Mahfuz Anam, chairman of Asia News Network and editor and publisher of Bangladesh’s The Daily Star, said cultures speak louder than languages and act as effective communicators among different people.

He urged people, particularly journalists, to devote more energy to learning and comprehending different cultural heritages to reduce misunderstandings in a world with more conflicts and uncertainties.

Ronald Gan, president of Persatuan Peranakan Baba Nyonya Malaysia, said the Baba and Nyonya community is a typical example of cultural exchanges between China and Malaysia, with blended elements in cuisine, attire and architecture.

“We are, after all, the descendants of the wise Chinese who migrated to Nanyang with the values of inclusiveness and mutual benefit,” said Gan, who has been organizing a Wangchuan ceremony in Melaka.

The ceremony, jointly nominated by China and Malaysia, was added to the UNESCO intangible cultural heritage list in 2020.

As climate change can affect cultural heritage sites, Michael Yeoh, president of KSI Strategic Institute for Asia Pacific, said countries in the region should enhance public, private and people partnerships to protect the environment.

Upholding the 5Ps — planet, people, prosperity, partnership and peace — will ensure a more sustainable future, said Yeoh.

A panel discussion on “Transnational Cooperation for the Conservation of Shared Cultural Landscapes in Asia” was also held during the forum, with experts from across the region exchanging views on future strategies for preserving cultural heritage and landscapes.
