Lifting weights doesn’t make you bulky and 4 other strength-training myths people need to stop believing

0

Strength training has a ton of health benefits, including reducing your overall mortality risk. But throughout my decade-plus in the fitness world, I’ve heard my fair share of myths about it. With so much conflicting fitness information out there, it’s tough to know what’s true and what’s not, so I’ve made it my life’s work to help people sift through it all.

While there’s no one way to get fit and strong, trading these outdated myths for more flexible, intuitive, science-backed advice can help you gain sustainable results and get closer to your fitness goals. To that end, here are the top five strength-training myths you need to stop believing.

Many clients, especially women, worry about becoming too “bulky” from lifting and shy away from heavy weights. With over 10 years of experience training others and lifting weights, I can assure you that getting bulky cannot happen by accident. For most people, strength training will craft a leaner and more “toned” physique, boost metabolism and improve overall body composition without adding bulk.

The truth is that it requires years of consistent strength training, plus a mix of genetics and a high-calorie diet, to build a considerable amount of muscle mass that people will notice. This kind of training is usually more intense than what most people tend to commit to. Also, women naturally have lower testosterone levels than men, making a bulky look even less likely — and certainly not an outcome that will happen without a lot of intentional effort. So instead of fearing the weights, use them to build strength, confidence and a healthier body.

As you age, keeping your mobility for everyday activities needs to be a top priority if you want to remain active and independent. Muscle strength declines slowly in your 30s until your 50s when the loss speeds up — dropping by 15% in your 60s and up to 30% in your 80s. Losing strength makes it harder to coordinate muscles, stay balanced and walk, increasing your chances of falling and getting hurt. But strength training can help you save and even build muscle, which is crucial to staying strong and stable and serving up pickleballs well into your twilight years.

Studies have repeatedly shown that resistance training in your golden years (60 and over) can increase strength by building muscle mass and improving how well muscles activate and work together. Research has shown that even one year of heavy resistance training can have lasting benefits, helping older adults maintain muscle function and strength for years to come.

Experts, including myself, recommend that older people strength train three to four times a week or even less often if they are just starting out. Plus, side effects are rare, so it’s a safe and effective way to stay strong and independent.

Running, swimming, biking and all other forms of cardio are excellent for your heart and lungs and burn plenty of calories in the process. While cardiovascular exercise does tend to burn more calories than strength training, it’s not necessarily the best choice for fat loss. That’s because strength training will increase your muscle tissue, which helps you burn more calories even when you’re sitting still.

Research shows that resistance training can increase metabolism and help with long-term weight control. Your best bet is to combine strength training and cardio to achieve a healthy weight. Of course, it’s also essential to eat a healthy diet.

A very common concern I hear is that strength training might cause joint problems. While lifting weights with poor form certainly can lead to injuries, strengthening your muscles will help manage and prevent joint pain by boosting joint stability and durability. The more stable your joints are, the less stress they’ll endure, meaning a lower risk of pain and dysfunction over time.

Surprisingly, it’s the opposite. Lifting weights can actually improve joint range of motion and is as effective as stretching for flexibility. This means that lifting weights helps your joints move freely while staying strong and stable, which is vital for living and moving pain free.

U.S. track star Noah Lyles takes bronze in 200-meter, says he tested positive for Covid

0

Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo, US’ Kenneth Bednarek and US’ Noah Lyles cross the finish line to finish first, second and third respectively in the men’s 200m final of the athletics event at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games at Stade de France in Saint-Denis, north of Paris, on August 8, 2024.

PARIS — Two days after Noah Lyles said he tested positive for Covid, the American sprinter finished third in the 200-meter final at the Paris Olympics, unable to chase down gold medalist Letsile Tebogo of Botswana.

Lyles ran 19.70 for bronze, behind Tebogo’s 19.46, which earned the first gold medal in Botswana’s history. American Kenny Bednarek earned silver in 19.62.

Following his positive test, Lyles said he moved into a hotel away from the Olympic Village to quarantine himself and arrived for warmups before Wednesday’s semifinal with a mask on. He said he never considered not competing in Thursday’s final and intentionally did not disclose information about his diagnosis.

“You never want to tell your competitors you’re sick,” he said. “Why would you give them an edge over you?”

Lyles, 27, appeared his usual energetic self when he was introduced before the final, jumping and sprinting down the track before getting into his blocks as a sold-out crowd inside Stade de France grew silent. Lyles was running from behind right from the start, looking little like the sprinter who had won 26 consecutive races dating to 2021 until he finished second in Wednesday’s semifinal — also to Tebogo — and had been 38-5 all-time against the seven other sprinters in Thursday’s final.

At the finish line Lyles collapsed, then gingerly stood while asking for water and sitting back down on the track. He was put into a wheelchair and carted off underneath the stadium. It was a stark contrast to Sunday night, when Lyles won the first Olympic gold medal of his career by winning the 100-meters by five-thousandths of a second and afterward guaranteed that he would win the 200 meters, as well.

Testing positive for COVID “definitely affected my performance,” Lyles said. “But I mean, to be honest, I’m more proud of myself than anything coming out and get the bronze medal with COVID in three days. It’s been a wild Olympics.”

In a statement, USA Track & Field said that it and the U.S. Olympic committee had adhered to guidelines set by the Centers for Disease Control and the International Olympic Committee to “prioritize his health, the wellbeing of our team, and the safety of fellow competitors.”

“Our primary commitment is to ensure the safety of Team USA athletes while upholding their right to compete. After a thorough medical evaluation, Noah chose to compete tonight. We respect his decision and will continue to monitor his condition closely.”

Lyles was attempting to become the first man to sweep both sprints at an Olympics since Jamaica’s Usain Bolt in 2016, and the first from the U.S. since Carl Lewis 40 years ago. Earning bronze also ends Lyles’s much-discussed ambition of becoming the first track athlete to win four gold medals at a single Olympics since 1984.

He said he would let USA Track & Field decide whether he should run on the U.S. 4×100-meter relay team that qualified for Friday’s final with the fastest time in preliminaries.

Boeing’s new outsider CEO Ortberg takes the helm, this time from the factory floor

Aerospace veteran Robert “Kelly” Ortberg becomes Boeing‘s new CEO on Thursday with a singular mission: restoring the reputation of a U.S. manufacturing icon.

That enormous goal will involve thousands of daily decisions that will determine whether Boeing can earn back the trust of regulators, airlines and the public; end persistent production defects; deliver aircraft on time and consistently to customers large and small; and stop burning cash.

That cash burn is running about $8 billion so far this year and counting. Meanwhile, Boeing shares are down some 37% so far in 2024, as of Wednesday.

Ortberg’s Day 1 activity is walking the floor of Boeing’s factory in Renton, Washington, where it builds its bestselling but problematic 737 Max. He plans to talk with employees and review safety and quality plans, with similar visits ahead at other Boeing plants.

“I can’t tell you how proud and excited I am to be a member of the Boeing team,” he said in a note to staff on Thursday. “While we clearly have a lot of work to do in restoring trust, I’m confident that working together, we will return the company to be the industry leader we all expect.”

Analysts and industry insiders are cautiously upbeat, painting the 64-year-old Ortberg — a more than three-decade veteran of the industry who spent years atop commercial and defense supplier Rockwell Collins after working up the ranks there — as a good listener with an engineering background (he has a mechanical engineering degree). Perhaps most importantly, he is a Boeing outsider.

“This guy has a fantastic reputation and level of experience in the industry,” said Richard Aboulafia, managing director at AeroDynamic Advisory. “He has a reputation for listening and for letting people push back.”

Trouble across businesses

Those skills will be key as Boeing tries to stabilize its production and eliminate manufacturing flaws.

Boeing’s top safety executive for commercial aerospace told a National Transportation Safety Board hearing earlier this week that the company is working on a design fix so the near-catastrophic door plug blowout it faced at the beginning of the year never happens again.

The hearing was part of the NTSB’s probe of the midair blowout of a door plug from a packed, monthsold Boeing 737 Max 9 as it climbed out of Portland, Oregon. While no one was seriously injured in the accident, it put Boeing back into crisis mode just as it was trying to move on from two fatal crashes of its bestselling 737 Max planes in 2018 and 2019.

Worker testimony at the NTSB hearing also showed manufacturing pressure and frequent fixes on planes, putting a spotlight on Boeing’s factories.

“I will be transparent with you every step of the way, sharing news on progress as well as where we must do things better,” Ortberg said in the memo. He vowed to share reports to staff, “giving you timely updates of what I’m seeing and hearing on the ground from our teammates and our stakeholders.”

Boeing last month agreed to plead guilty to defrauding the U.S. government during the Max certification, a deal that will require an independent corporate monitor at the company for three years.

But Ortberg will have to address issues not only in the commercial jet business, including the delayed certification of new 737 and 777 models, but also in its defense unit.

That segment of the business is facing issues with two 747s that will serve as the next Air Force One aircraft but are years behind schedule. Meanwhile, Boeing’s misfiring Starliner capsule, which launched in early June, has NASA debating whether to use SpaceX instead to bring astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams back from the International Space Station.

And on Thursday, NASA’s Inspector General released an audit of the agency’s Space Launch System rocket program, which is being built for moon missions and counts Boeing as a leading contractor. The NASA watchdog slammed Boeing for its “ineffective quality management and inexperienced workforce, continued cost increases and schedule delays, and the delayed establishment of a cost and schedule baseline.”

A decision is also looming over whether to launch a new aircraft as Boeing loses ground to rival Airbus.

The first 100 days of Ortberg’s time as CEO will be crucial, said Bank of America aerospace analyst Ron Epstein.

“The decisions made early in his tenure will have generational impacts on the company,” he said in a note Monday.

Ortberg and his team will need to ensure Boeing’s workforce is trained, with thousands of new workers in factories after more experienced staff members took buyouts or were laid off in the pandemic. A union representing some 30,000 Boeing factory workers in Washington state and Oregon is seeking more than 40% raises and, last month, members authorized a strike if a deal isn’t reached this September.

“The principles of safety and quality should be equally important as the manufacturing rates,” Jon Holden, local president of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, said in a statement last week. “This potential collaboration with the new CEO could be a prime opportunity for Boeing to prove its dedication to its workforce and acknowledge the exceptional manufacturing capability and capacity of skilled IAM Members on the shop floor.”

Why Boeing wants to buy back Spirit AeroSystems

Last week, alongside another quarterly loss, Boeing announced Ortberg would succeed Dave Calhoun, who had said in March he would step down by year’s end.

That was part of a larger executive shake-up after the door plug blowout. Calhoun himself took over a Boeing in crisis in early 2020, replacing Dennis Muilenburg, who was ousted for his handling of the two Max crashes.

While Boeing is still based in Arlington, Virginia — where it announced it would move its headquarters in 2022 from Chicago — Ortberg will be based in the Seattle area, giving him a close eye on where the majority of Boeing’s commercial jetliner production is based.

“In speaking with our customers and industry partners leading up to today, I can tell you that without exception, everyone wants us to succeed,” Otberg said in his Day 1 note to employees. “In many cases, they NEED us to succeed. This is a great foundation for us to build upon.”

Read more CNBC airline news

Getting off on the right foot with customers and the hundreds of suppliers that are struggling from pandemic-demand whiplash is important for Ortberg and the company. Boeing’s relationships with its bread-and-butter customers has suffered recently, and its leadership shake-up came after airline CEOs sought a meeting with the company’s board as delays of aircraft piled up in the wake of the door plug blowout.

Southwest Airlines is among Boeing’s biggest customers and, like other carriers, has scaled back its growth plans, citing delivery delays of new, more fuel-efficient jets from Boeing. The airline’s CEO hinted at the big feat Ortberg has ahead of him.

“We look forward to working with Kelly Ortberg in his efforts to return Boeing to its place as the leading American aerospace company,” CEO Bob Jordan said in a written statement. “A strong Boeing is great for Southwest Airlines and it’s great for our industry.”

LILIN V1W Dual-LED Camera – AI Technology Enhancing Intelligent Surveillance

0

TAIPEI, Aug. 8, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — How can full-color surveillance images be achieved at night?

Smartly switch color modes based on scene requirements.
Smartly switch color modes based on scene requirements.

LILIN, a leading provider of AI surveillance solutions, has developed a dual-LED night vision camera, combining advanced AI technology with a dual LED system to deliver ideal night-time image quality for surveillance sites.

This revolutionary camera employs a smart approach to present bright, noise-free color images in the dark. Under normal conditions, the camera activates infrared (IR) LEDs to record black-and-white images, conserving power and bandwidth. However, when certain conditions are met, the camera automatically switches to white light LEDs (Warm Light) to capture more detailed color images.

For instance, the camera can be set to display black-and-white images when there are no anomalies in the frame, and switch to color images when motion is detected. The illuminated white LEDs not only provide additional lighting for personnel but also act as a deterrent, signaling “area under surveillance” to passersby and discouraging misconduct.

Core Technology: Dual-Light Source System

One of the core technologies of this camera is the dual-LED system. The IR light provides black-and-white images suitable for energy-saving needs, while the white light presents color images with more detail and higher quality. This design ensures optimal image quality in any environment, significantly saving resources and enhancing surveillance efficiency. This means that whether in large enterprises or private homes, an economical and efficient surveillance solution can be achieved without sacrificing image quality.

AI-Driven Features

The camera’s built-in AI capabilities support behavior and object recognition, automatically triggering and recording events. Users can freely switch LED operation modes via the web interface or allow the camera to make automatic judgments, achieving more flexible image recording.

The LILIN V1W dual-LED camera is particularly suitable for night-time or low-light scenarios, including warehouses and storage rooms, residential or office environments, and outdoor areas.

Warehouses and Storage Rooms:

These places are usually not suitable for prolonged lighting, both for energy conservation and to prevent item deterioration.

Residential or Office Environments:

Why leave the lights on when no one is home or the office is closed? Yet, surveillance protection should not be compromised.

Outdoor Areas:

With weaker outdoor night lighting, the robust design of the dual-light source camera can withstand sun and rain, ensuring 24/7 surveillance.

Various Models to Meet Different Surveillance Needs

To meet diverse surveillance needs, LILIN offers multiple camera models. The bullet camera V1W9552X3 with a 3x optical zoom lens is suitable for deeper spaces, while the dome camera V1W4452E2 with a fixed-focus lens is ideal for smaller indoor areas, providing excellent image quality. Additionally, the video management software NAV5.0 utilizes AI technology to analyze images and manage related events in the central control center. Through intelligent search methods, administrators can easily browse images and quickly find key footage.

The LILIN V1W dual-light source color night vision camera is one of the latest in LILIN’s AI product line. For more exciting applications, please refer to: https://lilin.vip/v1wen

This $9 foot cream with 62,000+ five-star fans revitalizes cracked heels

0

Dry skin has always been a problem for me, and after years of dealing with parched patches that could seemingly never be quenched, I now have an encyclopedic knowledge of which moisturizers actually work. And as the self-dubbed “Moisturization Queen,” I’m here to tell you why you absolutely need O’Keeffe’s Healthy Feet Foot Cream, which is now on sale at Amazon for a mere $9 a jar.

Amazon

This foot cream heals, relieves and repairs, bringing your tootsies back to summer-smooth with every use.

$9 at Amazon

Why is it a good deal? 💰

I have spent loads of money trying moisturizers, heel balms, pumice stones and even special pedicure treatments to keep my dry feet soft and smooth, but none actually helped until I found O’Keeffe’s Healthy Feet Foot Cream, currently on sale at Amazon for $9. Considering the cost of a quality callus-busting pedicure can reach upwards of $50 nowadays, less than $10 is a total steal.

Why do I need this? 🤔

My feet are dry year-round, to the point that my heels are cracked enough to snag at my bed sheets — a pretty gross issue lots of people deal with, and often a major struggle to reverse. But O’Keeffe’s Healthy Feet Foot Cream, much like its hand cream, is a game-changer. Our senior beauty editor agrees: “This brand’s formula is somewhat legendary for its heavy-duty hydration of even the driest feet,” she wrote in a roundup of the best foot care products in the game.

The main difference between O’Keeffe’s and other foot moisturizers is its increased concentration of allantoin, an ingredient that’s particularly effective at penetrating the thicker skin of your feet to lock in moisture. This, combined with glycerin, allows the cream to create a protective layer around your dogs, boosting moisture and helping to retain that moisture.

To test it, I applied the foot cream to my heels and the balls of my feet before bed, then put on a pair of socks to help keep the cream from rubbing off while I slept. (O’Keeffe’s recommends exfoliating your skin before applying the cream, but I skipped that step and still found it worked.) After a few nights, the cracks on my feet had visibly diminished, and the dryness was all but gone. As I continued to use it, the cracks disappeared too.

I’ve tried heel balms, pumice stones and special pedicures, but nothing works as well as this $9 cream. (Amazon)

What reviewers say 💬

I’m not the only one who raves about O’Keeffe’s — more than 62,000(!) five-star reviewers at Amazon know this cream to be the miracle-in-a-jar that it is.

Pros 👍

“OK, y’all, this stuff is amazing,” one reviewer said. “My daughter hates wearing anything on her feet … her little feet were all red and cracked. This stuff is mind-blowing. Two, just two, applications was all it took to get my little one’s feet looking healthy again!”

Another user gushed, “I wish with all my heart I had taken a before and after photo of my feet!! One foot (not so much the other) was horrific. I’d get the worst itching, making me miserable for days on end. The foot was hideous, with peeling, raw, red skin in every spot that wasn’t callused and hard. … I tried this on a whim and it’s changed my life! I can wear sandals now without being embarrassed… After two days, the itching was lessened. After a week, my feet visibly started to heal. … They are actually soft and pretty again!!”

One five-star fan admitted, “I really didn’t have my hopes up too high for this cream, so I didn’t think about taking a picture. Too bad, because my feet are night and day. … I had this callus spot where the back of my foot rubs against my shoes, and it’s practically gone now. You don’t even see it anymore. I’m really impressed, like wow impressed.”

“My feet have always had disgusting dry and cracked heels,” confessed another customer. “I’ve tried wearing socks with lotion before and had zero results. I read about this stuff and was skeptical, but thought I would try it. Oh my. Just a miracle! I rub my heel in the jar and just add a thin coat of this stuff every night and it’s like I had a fresh pedicure. Better, really, because this doesn’t end! I don’t know what witchcraft this is, but WOW!”

Cons 👎

Some reviewers cautioned that the cream must be used routinely to achieve the best results: “This is a great product if you use it consistently. Otherwise, it’s just like anything else — it’s going to moisturize, but it’s not going to [heal] your skin,” noted a user.

Another reviewer critiqued, “Leaves a very greasy feeling to feet. I apply at night when going to bed, otherwise it feels nasty in my socks,” adding, however, “Does seem to be helping with dry feet, though.”

The cream creates a protective layer on the skin’s surface to help boost moisture levels and prevent further moisture loss.

$9 at Amazon

And if you want to feel good from your hands to your feet, O’Keeffe’s hand cream is currently only $8.

The concentrated cream doesn’t only help parched and cracked skin; it heals and repairs extreme dryness that comes with various conditions or manual jobs at any time of the year.

“I love this stuff! I am a fireman and constantly wash my hands,” raved a reviewer. “Especially in the winter the skin around my nail beds and fingertips will crack and bleed. It is really painful and gross! This stuff is a miracle worker. It feels waxy like it’s locking in the moisture. I put it on at night and can still tell it’s on in the morning. I am a regular buyer/user of this now, and couldn’t be happier!”

If you have Amazon Prime, you’ll get free shipping, of course. Not yet a member? No problem. You can sign up for your free 30-day trial here. (And by the way, those without Prime still get free shipping on orders of $35 or more.)
