RestoringVision Awarded $4 Million Grant to Restore Sight to 2.5 Million People with Presbyopia in India and Nigeria

SAN FRANCISCO, June 4, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — RestoringVision has been awarded a $4 million grant from Founders Pledge to address presbyopia at scale in India and Nigeria. This investment will enable RestoringVision to implement three large-scale initiatives with its partners to provide reading glasses to 2.5 million people living in poverty with uncorrected presbyopia.

RestoringVision focuses on addressing presbyopia at scale. Presbyopia is a naturally occurring, age-related eye condition that affects billions of people worldwide, including 800 million who have limited access to vision care. The organization aims to increase income potential, alleviate poverty, and foster sustained impact in India and Nigeria – two of the largest countries in the world – by increasing access to vision screening and reading glasses.

The programs include the following:

India: RestoringVision will collaborate with Supreme Task India, an NGO focused on access to affordable healthcare, to provide 500,000 adults aged 35-65 working in visually intensive occupations in Odisha state – one of the poorest states in India – with vision screenings and reading glasses. These include tailors, weavers, mechanics, carpenters, and farmers among others, to enable them to see clearly and continue their work.

Nigeria: Two million people will receive vision screenings and reading glasses in Nigeria through two initiatives to scale access to clear sight. This will be the largest contribution to date to advance the Nigerian Presidential Initiative that aims to reach five million Nigerians with glasses over the next several years.

RestoringVision will work with the Government of Nigeria’s National Eye Health Programme, the Clinton Health Access Initiative, and other partners to supply one million reading glasses for programs reaching people living in poverty with presbyopia and provide technical support to help this initiative succeed.

In addition, RestoringVision will partner with the Christian Health Association of Nigeria (CHAN) to provide vision screenings and reading glasses to one million adults engaged in visually intensive occupations. The program will leverage Nigeria’s faith-based health systems – tapping into CHAN’s nationwide network of faith-based hospitals, clinics, and community outreach organizations, in collaboration with faith leaders from Nigeria’s Christian and Muslim communities.

The far-reaching initiative in Nigeria will support insights into how to address presbyopia at scale in a large country and inform how we can solve the vision crisis globally.

By partnering with national and local organizations and leveraging their existing networks, RestoringVision’s model is consistent with the World Health Organization’s recommendation to address presbyopia at the community and primary level.

‘Everyone is too scared to come’: Taiwan’s earthquake deals a blow to top tourism hotspot

As a bed and breakfast owner in Taiwan’s Hualien County, Chen Rei-jia was used to the minor tremors that sometimes disturbed her work. But this time, something felt different.

“The shaking grew stronger and lasted longer, and as rescue vehicles arrived, I became frightened,” she said. “We heard rocks falling everywhere and saw smoke and dust all around. There were massive landslides in front and behind us.”

Emerging from her house to survey the damage, Chen had just survived the 7.4 magnitude earthquake that struck Taiwan on April 3 — the largest tremblor to rock the island in 25 years.

“I’ve never experienced such a strong earthquake in my life. It was truly terrifying,” the 60-year-old said.

Now, survivors like Chen are facing a new challenge. Tourists have canceled their trips en masse, and tour groups have disappeared.

For many residents of Hualien, which relies on tourism for 70% of its economy, the situation is quickly becoming an existential threat.

“It’s dire; there are no tourists,” said Chen. “Everyone is too scared to come.”

Empty restaurants and cancelled bookings

The brunt of the earthquake’s damage occured in Hualien County, which attracts millions of visitors per year to the towering peaks and waterfalls of its main draw, Taroko Gorge.

But now the previously packed mountain roads and walking paths to the gorge are now blocked with rubble, and vast swaths of Taroko National Park remain closed.

A woman named Lai, who owns a restaurant near the entrance to the gorge, said her once full restaurant now sits empty. 

“We really hope the national park can reopen, but if it doesn’t, there’s nothing we can do,” she said. “It feels like there’s no end in sight.”

Damage to the area also presents a problem for local tour guides like Liang Shiun-chu.

“Our usual tour package focuses on Taroko,” he explained. “Since the earthquake, all our bookings were canceled.”

The number of visits to Hualien’s scenic spots have dropped by 85% since last year, according to local officials. Liang explained that some guides like him now work as taxi drivers and are finding it hard to make ends meet.

“Business is down to 30%-50% of what it used to be,” he said. “Many friends have left Hualien to work elsewhere because it’s very tough for our industry here. I’ve considered moving to another county too.”

These trends are reflected across different tourism sectors, with the Hualien Hotel Association reporting that post-quake occupancy levels fell to just 5% — an observation echoed by Howard Yeh, the manager of a local hostel.

“Around 90% of foreign visitors to Hualien come specifically for Taroko Gorge. With this key attraction temporarily closed, Hualien loses much of its appeal for tourists,” he said. “We just have to hold on and keep waiting.”

Despite the hopes of Hualien’s residents, local officials estimate that a return to pre-quake tourism levels could take years.

“It might take five to 10 years for full recovery,” Chang Chih-hsiang, director general of Hualien’s tourism department, told CNBC Travel.

Difficulty getting in

To speed up the recovery process, Taiwan’s local and national governments have introduced programs to support local businesses and encourage visitors to return. The government is guaranteeing loans and subsidizing interest rates for local businesses who need loans.  

From July, visitors to Hualien County will also be eligible to receive up to $1,000 New Taiwan dollars ($31) in accommodation subsidies, with tour agencies receiving up to NT$20,000 ($618).

Chang Chih-hsiang, head of Hualien’s tourism office, estimates the area’s tourism industry could take five to 10 years to fully recover.

Despite this, locals worry these measures may not be enough. Stephanie Zhang, the head of the Hualien Hotel Association, said her organization predicts, in a best-case scenario, that hotel occupancy levels will return to 40-50% this summer.

Continuing news coverage about the quake, social media clips of collapsed buildings and the some 1,500 aftershocks that have hit Taiwan since the initial quake haven’t helped restore traveler confidence.

Even if visitors wanted to visit Hualien, accessing the county is more difficult than before. Some 70% of tourists reach Hualien from northern Taiwan, explained Chang but the quake damaged the road that connects the city to Taipei.

The road still functions at specific times of day, and the county is still accessible via train and plane, but the damage has taken a toll.

Hualien’s tourism office is working to restore the city and promote Hualien as a safe tourist destination, said Chen.

“If we do not reverse this trend and rebuild tourists’ confidence in Hualien, the loss is estimated to be around NT$15 billion by the end of the year,” he said.

Wide repercussions

The effects of the earthquake have reverberated far beyond Hualien’s tourism sector. “Tourism is the lifeblood of Hualien,” explained Chang.

When the tourism industry suffers, so does the rest of the region.

Markets, which usually serve locals, are suffering because locals aren’t making money, explained a market vendor Cheng Wen-zhong. “If tourists don’t come, our business suffers significantly.” Lin Ya-mi, a fish vendor at the town’s wet market, said business had dropped by two-thirds.

Despite that, Hualien’s residents hope that tourists will soon come back, so that life can return to normal.

Standing in her empty restaurant at the entrance to Taroko Gorge, Lai Sui-er explained that she still has faith in the future.

“If things don’t work out here, we’ll look elsewhere. And if that still doesn’t work, we’ll find jobs. No matter how much we earn, as long as we can make a living, we can manage by being frugal,” she said, wiping tears from her eyes.

“There is hope,” she said. “We will find a way.”

The top vacation destinations in Europe for those looking to exercise while on holiday were announced — and some spots are surprising. 

Global Running Day is June 5, 2024 — and Hoka, the running shoe brand known for comfort and support, enlisted researchers to discover which European vacation spots would be the best choice for avid runners to hit this summer. 

The analysis followed eight key metrics: annual Google search volume, Instagram hashtags, number of spas, pollution levels, average daylight hours, average temperature, Strava downloads (a workout tracking app), and the number of national parks.

Whether you’re wearing it to run errands or run a marathon, you want to find a sports bra that is both comfortable and supportive. To find the option that best suits your needs, there are a number of factors to consider:

  • Size: Your size may vary, depending on the brand (and sometimes the product), so be sure to check the size chart before adding it to the cart. Since sports bras are more compressive, don’t be surprised if your size is different from your normal bra size. Your cup size will affect the type of support you should be shopping for. “You need to understand the support you need for your breast size and for the activity,” said Julie Lohre, women’s fitness expert, IFBB Fitness Pro athlete and certified personal trainer. “A high level of support will be critical for a woman with a C and above cup who wants to include running or bounding plyometric exercises in their exercise routine.”

  • Support range: Many people wear the wrong sports bra for the activity they’re engaging in; if you like to partake in a range of fitness activities, it’s smart to have a range of sports bras, said Laura Martin, renowned mountain biker based in the Scottish Highlands. “High-impact sports bras should be worn for high-impact sports like jumping or running. These bras tend to be more restrictive, due to compression-style support which basically eliminates bounce. They tend to have more coverage and wider straps to help with the even distribution of the weight of the breasts. Low-impact sports bras are better suited to sports like yoga or walking. They have lighter support and are more comfortable. They tend to be a more relaxed fit and are made of lighter material.”

  • Compression vs. encapsulation: Another big decision is choosing between a compression bra and an encapsulation bra. Heather Wilson-Phillips, fitness expert, nutritionist and owner of Fitness Empire, explained the difference: “Encapsulation sports bras are usually marketed toward women who have larger breasts. They usually feature a separate cup for each breast, and give a more natural look.” Martin agreed, adding “These ‘encapsulate’ each breast to try to eliminate the bounce individually, instead of compressing the breasts against your body.” Compression sports bras are more typically what we think of when we think “sports bra.” Said Martin, “These will have a snug fit and look more like a band than two cups. They tend to be more compressing on the body. This pressure on the breasts helps eliminate the bounce and makes you feel more secure.”

  • Material: The fabric of a sports bra factors heavily into its comfort. Holbrook recommended “seeking out breathable polyester and nylon materials, as they effectively wick sweat away from the body.” While you may think cotton would be a preferable material since it’s soft and durable, that’s not the best choice. Said Lohre, “I avoid cotton because it tends to hold moisture against the body. When you are pushing hard in a workout, the last thing you want is your bra feeling waterlogged and heavy.”

To figure out which sports bras were the best of the best, we consulted a mix of fitness experts, trainers and our own shopping editors. They weighed in on what to look for when picking the right sports bra for different needs. We also polled this crew to find out which sports bras are their favorites — because there’s nothing like a firsthand recommendation! After reviewing hundreds of sports bras, top brands and product descriptions, we came down to 17 final candidates.

A sports bra should fit snugly but not so tightly that it digs into the skin or restricts breathing: “The cups of a sports bra should fit securely, without being too tight that your breasts begin to come out the top or sides,” said Wilson-Phillips.

“Chafing is a workout mood killer. Who wants to break a sweat while wrecking your skin?” said Kim Turner, of the sock brand Fitness Snob. To avoid this, you first want to check the fit. “Too loose or too snug, and you’re in for trouble. Second, cleanliness is next to, well … no chafing. Get out of that bra promptly post-workout and keep it fresh by washing regularly to avoid lingering sweat or dirt residue. Third, start at the source: Be mindful when shopping for sports bras. And of course, moisture-wicking fabric and seamless designs are lifesavers too.”

If you’re wearing a sports bra leisurely and don’t plan to break a sweat, it’s overall fine to wear it all day. However, as Turner mentioned above, you’ll want to change out of a sports bra immediately after a workout, since it has collected sweat or dirt residue.

Our experts stress that your bra should always feel comfortable and supportive, so when that’s no longer the case, you should replace it. The general recommendation is to replace your sports bra every six to 12 months.

The JSAUX FlipGo Dual Stacked Portable Monitor has been designed for digital nomads, remote workers and creatives featuring portability (it weighs between 1.1kg and 1.9kg), convenience (only needs one USB-C cable to power up) and efficiency. First Park Hyatt hotel in central China opens in the vibrant city of Changsha

CHANGSHA, China, June 3, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — Park Hyatt Changsha opens today, marking the debut of the Park Hyatt brand in the heart of central China’s Hunan capital. 

A part of Changsha’s prestigious International Finance Square (IFS), the hotel occupies the uppermost floors of the 1000-foot-tall Tower Two skyscraper, the capital’s tallest building. IFS is also the city’s most prestigious commercial complex, and Park Hyatt Changsha guests will have easy access to one of China’s largest luxury malls, perfect for shopping the latest high-end styles and fashion.

A short stroll away from the lively Wuyi Square, visitors will be able to easily access both ancient Tianxin Pavilion and Du Fu River Pavilion. The hotel is also a quick drive to Changsha’s leading attractions, including Orange Isle Park, Hunan Museum, Hunan Art Museum, and Yuelu Mountain.

Art and design
The interiors of Park Hyatt Changsha were created by the architectural and interiors practice Conran and Partners, founded by the late Sir Terence Conran. Creative Partner Tina Norden and her team drew inspiration from the natural colors and materials of Hunan province—famed for its caves, waterfalls, and soaring quartzite sandstone columns—as well as the contemporary spirit and dynamism of Changsha as a commercial, manufacturing, and transportation hub.

True to the Park Hyatt brand’s renowned connection to the arts, Park Hyatt Changsha is filled with original paintings and sculptures rooted in the context of their location. Whether attending an intimate event, dining at Lilan, or resting in spacious private quarters, guests will feel as if they are being entertained at an exceptional Changsha abode.

Arrival
With its elegant interiors, exquisitely landscaped gardens, charming floral arrangements, and inspirational contemporary art, the hotel aims to offer unparalleled comfort and exceptionally attentive service to its worldly guests seeking reprieve from their extensive travels.

Guests arrive on Level 4, passing a monumental maple tree, and enter through brass doors into an arrival lobby dominated by elevated artwork interlaced with copper thread and inspired by Hunan embroidery (on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list). Orange reflects the lively spirit of Changsha and the fiery personality of its locals, while the blue symbolizes the waterways throughout the city.

Upon being whisked up to Level 62 in a shuttle lift, guests will emerge into a striking vestibule lined in juniper-colored leather. The antechamber is dominated by a pair of giant bamboo spheres, reminiscent of Ts’u-chü balls, used in the ancient Chinese ball game dating back to the Han dynasty (221–207 BC).

They then emerge into the sky lobby lined floor-to-ceiling in light oak panelling with a curved sixteen-foot-high metallic silk screen adorned with bold gold resin Chinese-style brush strokes. Above the space hangs a dramatic nearly ten-foot-wide hand-made chandelier inspired by chrysanthemum stone by Czech glass and lighting specialist Lasvit.

Drinking and dining—Lilan on Level 62
Spanning the hotel’s entire 62nd floor, Lilan is the dining and drinking destination, which lays claim to five unique venues — a tea room, sun room, dining room, library and bar, all with spectacular views out over Changsha. Led by Executive Chef Zhang Wenwen, the culinary team at Park Hyatt Changsha will showcase authentic local and global comfort food utilizing the finest and freshest seasonal ingredients—organic, sustainable, and locally sourced where possible.

Come evening, and the bar will be an inevitable pre- or post-prandial draw for creative cocktails and mocktails infused with local ingredients and bites with regional touches.

Event spaces—Level 63 and Level 4
With a prized location in the heart of the city, evocative interiors and excellent culinary offerings, Park Hyatt Changsha is well-positioned to stage spectacular events, and has its sights set on being the city’s preeminent location for successful gatherings, big or small.

The hotel offers distinctive, flexible, well-equipped event venues spread nearly 19,375 square feet, suitable for gatherings of 36 to 900 attendees. These venues include the garden pavilion looking out into the lawn as the largest spaces suitable for over 500 banqueting guests combined, as well as the pantry and salons I, II and III which are perfect for hosting smaller groups under 200.

Wellness facilities—Level 48
Guests looking to exercise can swim laps in the 82-foot heated pool fashioned from 250-million-year-old Valser quartzite from the Swiss Alps or kick back on the cabana-style loungers. Alternatively, they can choose to work out in the 24-hour fitness center fitted with the latest cardio and strength equipment by US-based Life Fitness.

Within the changing rooms, guests will find two facilities that are a first for the region. In the laconium, the walls, floor, and loungers are heated, and Himalayan brine salt is diffused into the air for respiratory and dermal health. In the herbal sauna, meanwhile, eucalyptus and ylang-ylang leaves are suspended over a stone heater to provide aromatherapy.

Elsewhere, guests will discover heated loungers overlooking the cityscape; a vitality pool with submerged air-bubble seats, hydro jets and swan neck massagers for muscle stimulation – and experience showers featuring strategically positioned body jets for hydro massage and an option for scented cold mist to leave guests refreshed and invigorated.
