Perth pet owners warned over potentially deadly virus found in Butler dog parks

Perth pet owners have been warned about a potentially deadly virus found at dog parks in the city’s north.

City of Wanneroo confirmed two parks in the suburb of Butler have reported cases of the deadly parvovirus.

The highly contagious virus was detected at Kingsbridge Park and Pembury Park, prompting warnings for dog owners to ensure their pet’s vaccinations are up-to-date.

“The City’s parks maintenance team ensures all parks and open spaces, including our dog parks, are well maintained for the safety of all users,” City of Wanneroo community safety and emergency manager Kirsten Thrush said.

“Unfortunately, due to the highly contagious nature of parvovirus, even when water bowls, play spaces and bins are cleaned regularly there is still a risk to dogs, especially unvaccinated ones.”

The highly contagious virus can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, lethargy and dehydration in dogs, and can potentially be fatal.

Butler residents have warned via social media of a number of local cases of the virus.

“Dogs can pick up parvovirus from any open space, including footpaths, beaches and parks,” Thrush said.

“The best thing any dog owner can do to protect their pet is to make sure they are vaccinated.

“I would urge all dog owners to consult their local vet and check if their dog is up to date with its parvovirus vaccinations.”

$22,000 per week? All-inclusive resorts go big to win over luxury travelers

All-inclusive hotels are making a big play for luxury travelers.

In the wake of the pandemic, demand for all-inclusive resorts skyrocketed, according to a report by JLL Research Hotels & Hospitality. Travelers — suddenly and en masse — wanted vacations that were stress-free and easy to plan, ideally with a wellness component, according to the report.  

It was then that travelers discovered that the all-inclusive resorts of the past — known for bottom-shelf booze and quantity-over-quality dining — had changed.

Much of the sector had gone luxe.

As of 2022, the percentage of “upper upscale” and luxury resorts in the Dominican Republic was 47% of total all-inclusive resort supply — up from 31% in 1990, according to JLL. The numbers are even higher in Mexico, where upper upscale and luxury all-inclusive resorts accounted for more than half (55%) of its all-inclusive resorts in 2022.

Rates at all-inclusive resorts— once known as a relatively inexpensive form of travel — are up too, rapidly surpassing 2019 levels, according to JLL.

Marriott and Hilton have also expanded into the sector, under brands travelers may not normally associate with all-inclusive resorts— from DoubleTree to Westin and The Luxury Collection.

Private beaches and butler services

Resort operators have upgraded the all-inclusive experience with everything from grander suites to special resort privileges.

Guests at the beachfront Lopesan Costa Bávaro Resort Spa & Casino in the Dominican Republic can opt for a “Unique” room at the resort, which comes with an upgraded room, personal butler and access to a private beach. 

“We are seeing more and more guests traveling for a slow, unplugged experience with an upscale twist,” said Karina Arguello, the resort’s commercial director. “In addition to elements that you receive by booking an all-inclusive resort, private and additional amenities help to elevate that experience.”

Club Med introduced “Exclusive Collection Spaces” in select resorts that grant additional guest benefits, such as private transfers, in-suite continental breakfast, Champagne in the evenings and, as the name implies, access to exclusive spaces in resorts. One of these, Club Med Tignes, is a ski resort near the Italian border that opened in 2022.

The brand also has six resorts — in the Maldives, Mauritius, Italy and France — that make up its “Exclusive Collection.” Rates at its Valmorel Chalet-Apartments, a ski destination in France, start at $2,475 per person in June, and climb to $4,250 per person in December, according to its website.

Sandals, an all-inclusive adults-only resort operator in the Caribbean, provides butler service for its highest levels of suites. Butlers will unpack guests’ belongings, make dinner and spa reservations, serve drinks at the beach and expedite room service orders, according to its website.

Travelers with bigger budgets are opting for those services, said Kelly Connor, a New Jersey-based travel advisor with the AAA Club Alliance. But they’re not alone.

“Honeymooners … like the higher levels of luxury” too, she said.

Sandals Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, which opened in March 2024, introduced a new room category for the brand — the 1,248-square-foot Vincy overwater two-story villa. A seven-night stay at the end of June for two adults with butler service is $22,505 —and that’s after a 55% rack rate discount.

Opened in 2024, Sandals Saint Vincent and the Grenadines is the brand’s 18th all-inclusive resort.

To combat the critique that all-inclusive vacationers don’t see much beyond the resort, the Sandals Royal Curacao and Sandals Royal Bahamian is providing guests who stay a week in a butler-serviced suite with a $250 voucher to dine at restaurants around the island. They’re also provided with a convertible Mini Cooper to get there.

Another option: luxury lodges

Half- and full-board dining options have long been popular in places like the Maldives, whose one-resort-per-island model makes it difficult to eat elsewhere.

But luxury resorts, many located in remote locations, are opting for all-inclusive models as well.

Rosewood Cape Kidnappers, a luxury lodge on New Zealand’s North Island, provides a half-board option for guests, which includes breakfast, dinner and aperitifs, but excludes other alcoholic drinks.

Rates at British Columbia’s Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge include all meal and snacks, plus wine, beer and spirts. A stay in one of the lodge’s 25 tents also comes with guided activities, such as swimming in glacial waters and a half-day wildlife-spotting trip, according to the website.

Rates start at $2,900 per night.

Many seniors, in particular, want a lifeline to loved ones and emergency services, to say nothing of apps for health and safety, social media and more. Such a phone should also be ultra easy to use, with a large, bright screen, a straightforward user experience (meaning a simple interface) and ideally some accessibility features for users with physical challenges (such as eyesight or motor-skill impairments). With those specs in mind, I’ve identified five models that I consider the best phones for seniors in 2024. Android phones and iPhones can be made senior-friendly, but the Smart3 arrives that way: It’s a phone made specifically with seniors in mind. In place of a sea of cryptic icons, it offers a handful of core features (e.g., phone, text messages and email) represented by large, clearly labeled large buttons on a simple menu accessed through a touchscreen. And at the very top: an Urgent Response button for quick access to live human caregivers who can assist with everything from rides to minor health issues to real emergencies. (It can also be set to notify friends and family if that emergency button gets tapped.) The senior cell phone itself is quite affordable, and service plans start at just $20 per month. While this is far from the most capable smartphone out there, it is without question the best phone for seniors and the smartest choice.

Samsung

It may be Samsung’s entry-level Galaxy phone, but the A23 5G offers plenty of power, including the aforementioned Easy Mode, which helps simplify an interface some might find intimidating. Stocked with four camera lenses, the A23 is also great for photography. In fact, if you think you’ll be shooting lots of photos and videos, you’ll appreciate the expandable storage (up to 1 TB via microSD cards), a feature not found on any iPhone. The 6.6-inch large screen is also downright huge, great for seniors who have vision issues. And because this phone is unlocked for use with all phone carriers, it’s easy to take it somewhere offering dirt-cheap monthly service.

Apple

An affordable iPhone? Sounds unlikely, but you can pay just $12 per month (for 36 months at 0% interest) to get Apple’s baseline model, which packs plenty of power, a bright display and has excellent cameras. It also has a physical Home button, something tech-challenged seniors might appreciate. Take note, however, that the screen size is on the smaller side, at 4.7 inches. Some actually prefer that because the phone fits more easily in a pocket, but it can be harder on the eyes. In any case, you’ll need a Verizon network service plan as well (starting at $30/month), though Walmart also offers the iPhone SE through another provider: AT&T.

Apple

This is Apple’s flagship iPhone, and it’s here for one main reason: the super-spacious 6.7-inch screen. That’s a full 2 inches larger than the iPhone SE’s screen, and trust me when I say bigger is better. Icons are easier to identify, text is easier to read and YouTube videos are just, well, bigger. The 14 Pro Max is a high-end phone that takes dazzling telephoto and close-up photos as well, great for birders and grandchildren-watchers. You can finance this phone for around $29 per month (for 36 months) with no interest, though remember that you’ll need a service plan as well. (This link will lead you to Verizon, but Walmart offers the same model, with the same pricing, on AT&T.)

GrandPad

It may seem odd to include a tablet in this roundup, but the GrandPad is part phone: It includes 4G LTE service with its monthly subscription plan ($59). That means it can be used for email, phone calls and Zoom video calls. It also means it’s not limited to home use; it works out and about as well, just like a phone (though not one you’d want to hold up to your head). In addition, there’s baked-in live customer support that’s available 24/7, which helps justify the somewhat pricey service plan. Price: As with any basic phone you buy, there’s the cost of the phone itself and the cost of service. Thankfully, while the hardware can range from a few hundred dollars to nearly $1,000 (or more!), you can often take advantage of zero-interest financing to make them more affordable. The iPhone SE, for example, can be paid off over three years for just $5 per month. The Samsung A23 runs about $8.33 per month when financed through Samsung.

Cellphone plan: As for service, consider whether you really need an unlimited data plan. If you spend much of your time at home, connected to Wi-Fi, then you probably don’t. By choosing an unlocked phone, you can get service from whichever carrier offers the best plan to meet your connectivity needs and budget. Consumer Cellular, for example, is widely regarded as the “senior-friendly” carrier, with excellent customer service and plans starting at $20 per month. Mint Mobile is another popular option, with plans as low as $15 (amortized) with a prepaid option for a year at a time. Phone cases: Whatever phone and carrier you end up with, I strongly recommend buying a high-quality case as well. Although every day phone durability has improved over the years, with screens that promise to withstand minor bumps and scratches, gravity is not your friend — and a cracked screen is no fun.

Phone accessories: Speaking of accessories, consider keeping a mobile charger close at hand. Depending on how you use it, your phone’s long battery life might last a couple of days on a charge or it might expire by dinnertime. If you’re near an outlet you can always plug it in, but a power bank like this one from Anker can help when you’re out and about.

In our list above, you’ll find two iPhones, two specialized phones, one Android phone and one tablet. Although the Android-versus-iPhone debate has been raging for years, the truth is that neither operating system is especially senior-friendly. One exception: Samsung’s Galaxy A23 offers something called Easy Mode. When activated, the functionality makes the user interface (text, icons, onscreen keyboard, etc.) larger and simplifies the home screen. When you swipe to the left-most screen, for example, you’ll see it’s now populated with one-tap icons to call “favorited” contacts.

That’s a great option, one that’s available on all Samsung Galaxy phones (not just the A23). However, the Android operating system on the whole — navigation, settings, etc. — can be a little complicated. Overall, I find iPhones a bit easier to learn and use, and they offer an unrivaled selection of accessibility features and assistive technology. For example, users who suffer from low vision can enable “Speak Screen,” which verbalizes the contents of whatever’s currently showing. Those with hearing impairments can toggle the rear LED (normally used by the camera) to flash repeatedly when a call, text or other alert comes in. A triple-click of the side button can activate a camera-powered magnifier, and so on.

Newer iPhones also offer medical-alert-style safety features like crash detection and, when paired with a newer Apple Watch, fall detection. In the unfortunate event of a driving incident or a tumble, these helpers can notify family members and even contact on-call emergency services like other medical alert devices. (Worth noting: Google Pixel phones offer crash detection as well, and fall detection is coming to Google’s Pixel Watch.)

There’s no exact science to this one, but over time you will notice that performance may degrade and the battery won’t quite hold a charge as long as it used to. According to the FTC, most people keep their phone for two to three years, but it’s definitely possible that phones can last longer than this based on your personal usage habits.

For many people, their cell phone is the main way they keep in touch with friends, family, and in case of an emergency it’s how they can get help. It’s worth keeping an eye on how it performs over time and when you start to see signs of it not working the same you get a replacement.

Medicare does pay for cell phones, but not for everyone. To qualify for a free phone, you must also be enrolled in a qualified government assistance program or be under the income limits. These conditions do vary, so it’s recommended to contact Medicare to discuss your exact situation and see if you qualify for the free phone from Medicaid.

It was in Reims that Gen. Dwight Eisenhower oversaw the final Allied advance into the heart of Germany in 1945. 

And it’s where he accepted the surrender of the German High Command in the wee hours of a Wednesday morning in May. 

Gen. Alfred Jodl signed on behalf of Germany. 

He was executed for war crimes in 1946. Just a week earlier, Adolf Hitler died like a coward by suicide in his Berlin bunker.

Ike was in the perfect place to celebrate the dawn of a new day. 

Reims is the largest city in France’s world-famous wine-making region of Champagne.

Beneath its streets lies an immense treasure of sparkling wine. Billions worth of bubbly is aging in Reims right now in chalk and limestone caves, as it has been for centuries.

The underground climate provides the constant cool temperature and humidity to inspire perfectly effervescent wine.  

The champagne appears to rest silently. Inside each bottle, however, is a frenzy of life and activity. 

Yeasts consume sugar and convert it into alcohol — and into tiny bubbles.

The world’s most famous champagne houses offer guided tours of their subterranean citadels of sparklers: G.H. Mumm, Taittinger and Veuve Clicquot among them. 

“Reims is intoxicating.”

Tours are followed by tastings in lux lounges where champagne novices and enthusiasts alike clink and mingle.

Champagne owes much of its royal reputation to a monumental event in the history of European Christianity and French identity. 

Clovis, the first king of the Franks, was baptized a Catholic in Reims in 496.

Clovis inspired a later trend: Twenty-five kings of France were crowned in Reims Cathedral from the 13th to 19th centuries.

“Wine was said to flow freely at the coronation banquets,” reports the website of Comite Champagne, an industry trade group.

“This is how the region’s wine, initially still but which then became sparkling, came to be known as … the ‘wine of kings and the king of wines.’” 

Champagne was uncorked as the wine of generals and victors on May 8, 1945.

Ginther says there’s no proof that Ike drank champagne that day in Reims to celebrate the Allied victory.

But at least one photo shows Eisenhower beaming at a celebratory table, bottles of bubbly in front of him.

World War II was not over. The fight to defeat Japan in the Pacific took three more months of horrific losses.

Ike had a lot on his mind.

NSW Liberal MP Matt Cross reveals bowel cancer diagnosis after blood donation

NSW Liberal MP Matt Cross has been diagnosed with bowel cancer and has taken immediate leave to focus on his recovery.

The 39-year-old Member for Davidson, on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, revealed his diagnosis in parliament on Tuesday, saying unusual blood levels recorded during a donation prompted him to visit his GP.

“Recently, I became one of over 150,000 Australians who are diagnosed with cancer in a typical year, or one of the 300 Australians who are diagnosed with bowel cancer during an average week,” Cross said.

“Nothing about this has felt typical or average to me.”

The politician said he had since experienced “feelings of shock, fear and denial” but remains “grateful” for an early diagnosis.

“When I wake up every single morning, my first thoughts are: ‘Did I just have a bad dream?’” Cross said.

“My second thought is one of comfort — that action is being taken.”

Cross was alerted to the life-changing diagnosis during a routine blood donation in 2023 with the Australian Red Cross’ Lifeblood, through which he has been donating since his late teens.

His haemoglobin levels were flagged as being too low to donate, and it was recommended he see a GP.

He thought some iron supplements and iron-rich foods would be the end of it — but the doctor suggested he have a colonoscopy.

“Still stubborn, I thank my wife, Gessika, for encouraging me to make sure that I had a colonoscopy in a timely manner, and it was there that I discovered my cancer diagnosis,” Cross said.

“Donating blood gave my blood a voice. It alerted me to danger.

“Consider becoming a blood donor. Each donation can save up to three lives, but it might just help you too.”

He also recommended regular visits to a GP and a good understanding of one’s family medical history.

Stepping back from politics

Cross revealed that four family members on his maternal side had suffered bowel cancer, three of whom died with the disease.

“Although I knew there was a risk that I could one day get bowel cancer, I never believed it could happen to be at age 39,” he said.

The MP said he had been experiencing fatigue before his diagnosis, but had chalked it up to long hours on the job.

“As everyone in this place knows, we can work long hours, so I simply put my fatigue down to my work,” he said in parliament on Tuesday.

He announced he would be stepping back from politics immediately, and undergoing surgery in the coming days.

“Recovery will require my full focus,” he said.

He assured constituents his office would continue to operate without him.

“My office will continue to provide the highest standards of constituent service,” he said.

“I’ll be back.”

Seragon Completes Pre-Clinical Study of Aging Intervention Candidate SRN-901

IRVINE, Calif., May 7, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — Seragon Biosciences, Inc. today announced the completion of a pre-clinical study on its novel anti-aging candidate, SRN-901. This pivotal study, conducted in mice, was undertaken to evaluate the impact of SRN-901 on aging as well as various health markers.

Results from the study show that SRN-901 achieved one of the largest extensions of lifespan and healthspan to date in the treated population. Whole-genome transcriptome sequencing was performed on over 300 mice to assess the effects of SRN-901 at a molecular level. The results highlighted a significant increase in the expression of many genes associated with longevity and a notable reduction in the expression of genes linked to aging. Additionally, a metabolic panel revealed beneficial changes in several biomarkers associated with younger biological age.

Other tests were conducted to evaluate the effect of SRN-901 on healthspan, a measure of how long health is maintained over the course of one’s life. The study also evaluated physical and cognitive function. Treadmill tests showed significantly enhanced endurance in elderly mice. Frailty scores showed marked improvement in the elderly mice receiving SRN-901, and there was a significant reduction in tumor occurrence in the treated group.

The research team at Seragon Biosciences is encouraged by the study’s results and will conduct further analysis to uncover additional findings. These results will be published once the supplementary analysis is complete.
