Cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis in Americans age 55 to 64 have more than doubled over the past decade. Here’s why.

0

There’s no such thing as being too old to get a sexually transmitted infection (STI). Despite that, there’s “a misconception” that older adults are “immune to STIs simply because they’re over the age of 55 and that’s not going to happen to them anymore,” Dr. Ina Park, associate professor of family community medicine at the University of California, San Francisco and author of Strange Bedfellows: Adventures in the Science, History, and Surprising Secrets of STIs, tells Yahoo Life.

Park wants older adults to know that you can get an STI “regardless of your age.” Quoting HIV research scientist Dr. Stephen Karpiak, Park says, “Age is not a condom.”

In fact, according to Park, “you might be surprised to know that STIs are going up for everybody, including for people over the age of 55.”

STIs on the rise

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention tracks STIs, including chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis. Although infections like chlamydia, for example, are highest among adolescents and young adults, a new research review presented at the European Congress of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases points out that STIs — specifically, chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis — in Americans ages 55 to 64 have more than doubled over the past decade. Given that 1 in 6 people globally will be 60 and older by 2030, the review calls on health professionals to take the initiative by bringing up sexual health as a routine part of health care for older adults.

This isn’t the first study to point out the rise in STIs in this age group. A 2020 study found that STIs in general among older adults have “dramatically increased in recent years, especially among those who are widowed and divorced.”

Although new HIV diagnoses are dropping among people 50 and older, about 1 in 6 HIV diagnoses in 2018 were in this older age group, according to the CDC. In addition, Park points out that herpes, which is highly contagious, is “an infection that stays with you forever once you become infected” and that the percentage of people with herpes “goes up with age.”

By the time people are over the age of 50, Park says “about 1 in 5 of us has herpes type 2,” which causes genital herpes. “And then when we talk about herpes type 1, which causes oral herpes or cold sores, it’s over 60 percent of the U.S. population over the age of 50 that has herpes type 1.”

STIs — including the most common sexually transmitted infection, HPV (or human papillomavirus), which can cause health problems such as genital warts and certain cancers in women and men, according to Cleveland Clinic — can also spread in retirement communities where the ratio of men to women is “really skewed,” says Park.

That’s because men typically don’t live as long as women, notes Park, so there tends to be fewer men in those communities. “The ones that are around are getting lots of action, so they’re having multiple partners,” she says. “And if you have multiple concurrent partners, that is the easiest way to spread an STI in a community.”

Why are older adults at risk of STIs?

There are several reasons STIs continue to infect older adults. Park, who also serves as a medical consultant to the CDC Division of STD Prevention, says that some have had “absolutely zero education” when it comes to sexually transmitted infections and how to prevent them, while others were either only taught about unplanned pregnancy or experienced “fear-based education” that focused solely on the “worst-case scenario” pictures of STIs.

For still others, it may have been years since STIs were even on their radar. Park acknowledges that one of the “biggest adjustments” that some newly single older adults face is dating after being in a long-term, stable partnership and “not having had to think about sexual health for decades,” she says, adding: “It’s definitely a brand-new world out there.”

Dr. Justyna Kowalska, author of the new study and professor of medicine at the Medical University of Warsaw in Poland, stated in a press release: “Rising divorce rates, forgoing condoms as there is no risk of pregnancy, the availability of drugs for sexual dysfunction, the large number of older adults living together in retirement communities, and the increased use of dating apps are likely to have contributed to the growing incidence of STIs in the over 50s.”

However, she added that these numbers likely underestimate how many older adults are impacted by STIs, given that “stigma and embarrassment both on the part of older people and health care professionals … is leading to this age group not seeking help for STIs.”

‘We make assumptions that older people are not sexual beings’

Another contributing factor: Some doctors either assume that older adults aren’t having sex, aren’t comfortable bringing up the topic or run out of time to cover it during a checkup.

“I think we, as a society, really stop discussing sexuality or thinking about sexuality past a certain age, because I think we make assumptions that older people are not sexual beings,” says Park. “And I’m here to tell you that’s absolutely not the case. I think we’re really doing a disservice to folks.”

If physicians don’t ask their older patients whether they’re sexually active, then they’re “missing out on that opportunity to have that conversation,” not only to “see if they’re actually having pleasure in their sex life” but also to “troubleshoot any issues that might be going on and then give them the opportunity to test for STIs.”

Park says that the reason physicians may not bring up the topic is that “some of us feel uncomfortable with the idea that someone that’s the age of our parents, for example, is still having sex,” she says, “but it’s certainly still happening — not for everybody, but it’s important as providers and clinicians to ask and see what’s going on in people’s sex lives, because it’s something that for some people goes on lifelong.”

There is also the issue of shame when it comes to sex and STIs, making it harder for older adults (and younger people) to bring it up with their doctor. “Shame and stigma are such a huge factor in STIs and why people avoid going in to get tested because they are afraid to know the answer to the test results,” Park says.

But Park wants people of all ages to know that “most STIs can be cured,” and the ones that can’t be cured can “certainly be controlled.”

She says we need to think about sexual health as an important part of our overall health and not something that only younger people need to be conscious of. Along with using condoms, which reduce the risk of STIs when used consistently and correctly, Park recommends that those who are sexually active and aren’t in monogamous relationships get tested for STIs between different sexual partners or at least once a year.

“Just because you happen to be above a certain age, you are not immune to getting an STI if you are still sexually active,” Park says. “So don’t have that illusion that your age is going to protect you. Go out and use protection yourself and get tested.”

Arteastiq the Sanctuary – Award-Winning Singapore Tea Lounge Launches in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam & Offers 1000 Tea Sets for Free

0

SINGAPORE, March 26, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — Established in 2010, the Arteastiq brand is an idea that brings the soul and spirit of Singapore’s food history to life, offering multi-sensory and taste-provoking experiences to diners. To realize the vision of leading the global wave of culinary style innovation, Arteastiq chose Vietnam as its first stop outside Singapore, bringing Arteastiq The Sanctuary to District 2 of Ho Chi Minh City.

With a history of tea cultivation spanning more than 2,000 years, Vietnam offers many opportunities for Arteastiq’s expansion strategy. At the same time, this is also a country with a long tradition of enjoying tea, with the amount of tea and coffee consumed per capita per month up to 0.1kg. Above all, Vietnam’s vibrant cultural and artistic scene in recent years has provided a promising playground for the brand’s creative activities, a perfect canvas between tea and art for Arteastiq.

The great potential for the brand’s success in Vietnam also comes from the fact that the F&B industry is on a strong developmental path, expecting a growth of 8.65% per year from 2021-2026.

Arteastiq The Sanctuary’s menu offers a multi-sensory experience around the world, with unique dishes such as Singaporean Sambal Sauce Barbs served with dried Laksa noodles. This dish promises a flavourful ‘adventure’ with oven-baked bass fillets drenched in ground sambal peppers and dried shrimp, served with vermicelli, deep-fried onions, cucumber and a bit of kumquat squeezed on top like the perfect note. Equally prominent is Truffle Hunters of Italy, a luxurious dish of freshly cooked capellini pasta in truffle sauce, paired with sautéed sliced beef tenderloin with mushrooms and a hint of Yan fruit ponzu sauce, bringing a delicate flavour to the tip of the tongue.

The Dream Afternoon Tea Set and Paradise Afternoon Teasery are unique high tea collections of delicate pastries, sandwiches and small desserts that create a poetic feel, paired with Arteastiq’s finest teas. The Teaserys are like a serene symphony at sunset, bringing feelings of happiness and relaxation.

With the unique combination of art and cuisine at the core of the brand, Arteastiq initiated an Art Jamming Studio on the 2nd floor (also known as their Artistry Alcove) of Arteastiq The Sanctuary. This is where Art Jamming sessions will take place, where diners can express their inner artists and satisfy their creativity on canvases, while enjoying delicious food and Arteastiq’s famous specialty tea.

At the same time, an all-new edition of Silent Art Jamming Club was introduced to guests for the first time, which is also exclusively for Vietnam. The Silent Art Jamming concept addresses the noise problem commonly found at traditional parties or events by assisting participants to enjoy DJ music through headphones. Participants can still enjoy high-quality audio and interact with each other without making noise, all while painting with luminous paint under UV lights. Therefore, this is a very interesting and relaxing group activity, suitable for gathering friends and family. This program will be held regularly every weekend evening at Arteastiq The Sanctuary.

“When I first came to Arteastiq The Sanctuary, I felt like I was stepping into a work of art where architecture and food dance together. The modern lounge, decorated with designer furniture, creates an atmosphere of elegance and luxury, reflecting the sophistication and creativity in the dishes,” said a diner who participated in the launch.

“This is not just a dining experience but a journey of immersion into the world of art, led by Arteastiq’s exceptional hospitality. I left feeling satisfied, eager to return. Whether it’s with friends or family, Arteastiq will provide an unforgettable moment that you should experience for yourself,” she said.

These comments reinforce Arteastiq The Sanctuary’s unwavering commitment to delivering a world-class customer experience. Every aspect, from the meticulously curated selection of food and tea to the attentiveness of the staff, is designed to ensure diner satisfaction. This commitment to excellence is the standard Arteastiq has pursued and maintained since its inception. It is Arteastiq’s dedication to creating unforgettable moments and delivering exceptional hospitality that has helped Arteastiq Group become a leader in food and lifestyle.

The Arteastiq brand traces its roots to the history of Singapore and the Teo family, descendants of the long-standing Chaozhou district in Guangdong Eastern Province, which is recognized as the “capital” of Gongfu Tea. Ivan Teo, the youngest son in the family, was inspired by a childhood event, when a lychee accidentally fell into the oolong teapot he was brewing. The accidental blend of sweet lychee and wood-scented oolong left a deep impression on him.

As an entrepreneur, Ivan was determined to recreate this unique taste and aroma, which is why Arteastiq was born. His entrepreneurial mindset and passion for tea have been instrumental in shaping Arteastiq’s innovative spirit and global mission. Ivan Teo, CEO of Arteastiq Group affirmed: “I am dedicated to delivering an unparalleled experience where art combined with tea and exceptional hospitality converge to create unforgettable moments for our customers.”

Ivan’s devotion to service excellence, innovation and culinary arts has been noticed. In 2023, Arteastiq received the prestigious Epicurean Star Award for Best Café presented by the Restaurant Association of Singapore, recognised for its outstanding quality, presentation, hospitality and overall experience. That marked the second time the establishment has received the award since 2016.

Arteastiq’s goal of fostering quality customer relationships is further strengthened by the exclusive VVIP Membership Program for diners in Vietnam. Platinum members enjoy unlimited access to tea sets, along with special gifts for two years. At the same time, Platinum members will also receive their own embroidered pillow, all to enhance the tea and art experience for them every time they come to Arteastiq.

For its grand opening, Arteastiq The Sanctuary is giving away 1000 sets of tea sets for 7 days, at the end of which 3 lucky guests will be selected to receive an entire year’s supply of free tea sets. Following the grand opening on 23rd March 2024, the establishment plans to continue imprinting its mark on Vietnam’s culinary scene. As Arteastiq pushes the boundaries of culinary innovation, one thing remains constant: a commitment to crafting moments that linger in the hearts and minds of diners.

Arnold Schwarzenegger just got a pacemaker. Here’s what to know about the heart device that makes him ‘a little bit more of a machine.’

0

Arnold Schwarzenegger has become more like his iconic Terminator character after having surgery last week to receive a pacemaker, the 76-year-old actor and former California governor announced Monday. “I had surgery to become a little bit more of a machine. I got a pacemaker,” he told listeners to his podcast, Arnold’s Pump Club. Schwarzenegger was born with a bicuspid aortic valve, a heart defect that can eventually lead blood to flow the wrong direction and weaken cardiac function. He previously had three open heart surgeries to treat the congenital condition, and said he’s doing great since having the pacemaker placed.

Here’s what you need to know about pacemakers and when someone may need the device.

What is a pacemaker?

A pacemaker is a small, battery-powered device that controls the heartbeat. Our heartbeats are controlled by a highly efficient, biological electrical system that ensures our heart steadily pumps blood to the rest of the body. But sometimes — due to age, illness, chronic health conditions or problems such as heart attacks and heart failure — this electrical system goes haywire. If it goes on for too long, the reduced or irregular blood flow can harm the heart, brain and other organs, according to the National Institutes of Health. “The idea behind the pacemaker is to help stimulate the heart in a more regular rhythm,” Dr. Sadiya Khan, a professor of cardiovascular epidemiology at Northwestern Feinberg School of Medicine, tells Yahoo Life.

The device consists of two primary components: a box containing a battery and a tiny computer that processes information and delivers electrical impulses and wires (called “leads”). The wires are threaded into the veins around the heart. Electrodes at the ends of these wires perform dual functions: They sense your heartbeat, reading when it slows (or, less commonly, speeds up) to an abnormal space, and deliver electrical impulses that prompt the heart to beat, getting its rhythm back on track.

Information from the electrodes is processed by the computer in the pacemaker box, which is surgically implanted on the left side of the chest, just under the collarbone. The computer determines when the heart needs a jolt to get back on rhythm and delivers the electrical impulses back through the wires to the electrode, stimulating the heart muscle to contract.

Pacemakers are also sometimes used temporarily when someone is recovering from a heart attack or heart surgery, but in this case only the wires are inserted into the body; the pacemaker box stays outside the body, and the device is generally only used for a few days.

When does someone need a pacemaker?

The device is most commonly implanted when someone’s heart beats too slowly or is too weak. They’re often used in patients who have an arrhythmia condition called atrial fibrillation, but can also be used in those who have had a heart attack or heart failure or are at risk of going into cardiac arrest.

Pacemakers are also sometimes used to regulate the heartbeats in people with congenital heart disease, a group of conditions that affect about 1% of people born in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Schwarzenegger has one of these conditions, called a bicuspid aortic valve, which can cause blood to flow the wrong direction and overwork the heart by trying to push blood through the narrower passageway.

Schwarzenegger previously had open-heart surgeries to replace a defective aortic valve and another heart valve. Each of those have to be replaced after an average of 12 to 15 years, and he had those valves replaced again in 2018 and 2020. The actor didn’t reveal the precise reason he had a pacemaker placed, but he did mention his heart defect.

What is life with a pacemaker like?

Most people can return to normal activities after recovering from surgery. In fact, the American Heart Association recommends being physically active to maintain health and good blood circulation, as long as patients don’t overdo it. People with pacemakers can travel by plane, car or train, but should tell security checkpoint workers about their pacemakers because they may need to be screened differently. The only major concerns for those with pacemakers are strong magnets and electrical fields, which can disrupt the device.

Otherwise, the device should be basically unnoticeable, says Khan. “You shouldn’t feel anything when the pacemaker is working,” she tells Yahoo Life. She adds that some patients are aware of the pacemaker box and battery, which can sometimes be seen or felt under the skin, but it shouldn’t be evident when the device is delivering electrical impulses or not.

How long do pacemakers last?

A pacemaker’s battery typically lasts between five and seven years before it needs to be changed, according to Johns Hopkins Medicine. Sometimes the entire pacemaker box, including the battery, is replaced. Other times, just the battery is swapped out. The procedure is fairly simple, and can be sometimes done as an outpatient procedure.

How long someone will live after getting a pacemaker “really depends on why they needed the pacemaker,” says Khan. “The pacemaker itself should not influence how somebody feels or how they’re doing; in fact they should feel better, if they were having problems beforehand.” Patients who have fewer or less severe health issues may have a nearly normal life expectancy with a pacemaker, according to the Cleveland Clinic.

As for Schwarzenegger, he’s barely missed a beat. “I had my surgery on Monday, and by Friday, I was already at a big environmental event with my friend and fellow fitness crusader Jane Fonda,” he said on his podcast.

Worried about muscle loss? Here are 4 simple ways to offset it.

0

If you notice that your handshake is getting weaker, a walk to the car with groceries is becoming more difficult or lifting yourself out of a chair is sometimes a struggle, you may be experiencing muscle loss. It’s something that comes with aging, inactivity, malnutrition or certain health conditions, but it’s also a result of rapid weight loss and a growing concern for people taking weight loss medications.

“Because of the substantial weight loss that occurs very rapidly with the new obesity medications, consequently, people are losing a lot of muscle. So now, people are starting to talk about maybe having an epidemic of people with low muscle mass in the future,” Carla Prado, a registered dietitian and director of the Human Nutrition Research Unit at the University of Alberta in Canada, tells Yahoo Life.

“By any means that you achieve weight loss, there’s still a risk that anywhere from 11 to 50% of that weight can come from muscle,” adds Dr. Dominique Williams, medical director of the weight management program at Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters in Norfolk, Va. “When you don’t get enough calories from food, your body’s going to pull from its energy reserve to figure out where to get that next level of energy — and it will start to pull from muscle.”

According to Suzette Pereira, muscle health research scientist for the health care company Abbott, muscle “plays a huge role” in terms of a person’s motility, or ability to move, and energy levels; research has also linked it to supporting the immune system. “So it’s really, really important to maintain muscle and preserve muscle over time,” she tells Yahoo Life.

One way to do that is by engaging in movement and exercise, as Pereira says there’s a “use it or lose it” mindset when it comes to muscle mass. But that’s only one piece of the puzzle.

“Most people only think about exercise, but nutrition is essential,” says Prado. “All interventions may likely fail if we don’t fuel the muscles properly with nutrition.”

Ready to get started? Ahead, experts share simple tips to offset muscle loss.

Hit your weekly exercise goals

Prado says that physical activity is a way to slow down all the major hallmarks of aging, including muscle loss. In the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes, the current recommendation for adults is 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity and two days of muscle strengthening activity per week. The more intense a workout is, the less time needed to hit that weekly target; jogging, or taking part in another vigorous activity, for 75 minutes each week is the equivalent of 150 minutes of brisk walking, for example.

Up your protein

Williams recommends getting 25 to 30 grams of protein with each meal. As an obesity specialist working with Abbott, she points to protein shakes as an efficient way to increase protein intake and offset muscle loss.

Protein powders are even more versatile, according to registered dietitian Avery Zenker. She tells Yahoo Life that they can be added to “oatmeal, pancakes, yogurt or baking recipes to boost protein content.”

Zenker also recommends food swaps, like replacing regular pasta with chickpea pasta as a convenient way to make meals more nutrient-dense. “Chickpea pasta is rich in protein and fiber, which helps in muscle synthesis and repair,” she says. “It can even work in salads and pasta salads.”

Try rucking

Eric Cohen, a CrossFit trainer and the co-founder of 99 Walks, recommends rucking, which is walking with a weighted pack on your back. While there are specialty weighted rucking packs available, filling a backpack with some water bottles or books also does the trick. “The weighted pack engages muscles in your back, shoulders and core to support the additional load,” Cohen tells Yahoo Life. “Plus the load adds force to each step, creating a stimulus for leg and lower body muscle to compensate and maintain or build strength.”

According to Cohen, rucking “has double value as it also builds cardiovascular fitness at the same time.” It’s accessible and allows for building up weight and duration over time, he adds.

Do squats

Squats are perfect for stimulating muscles, according to certified personal trainer and strength and conditioning coach Natalie Kollars. For an extra challenge, hold a barbell while you lower and lift.

Kollars recommends pushing the heels through the ground on the way back up, and pulling the belly button in toward the spine “to keep the abs tight” during the move. (And for more pointers, refer to this handy tutorial.)

“Although primarily a lower body exercise, the entire core and some of the upper body are working too,” Kollars says.
