Lyme disease cases have gone up in the U.S. Here’s why — and how to protect yourself.

0

About 63,000 cases of Lyme disease were reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 2022, according to a report released last month. That’s a nearly 70% jump in the number of cases that were reported in 2021. While the number is alarming and appears as though infections are on the rise, the reality is not that simple. Here’s what’s going on: The CDC changed its case definition of Lyme disease in 2021, which resulted in an increase in the number of cases reported through the Nationally Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System (NNDSS), which is its passive reporting system used to collect case data.

However, the CDC notes that, even after that revision, the most recent data likely underrepresents the real number of annual cases because the NNDSS primarily uses positive lab reports to count them, and Lyme disease is often diagnosed and treated without testing. “This is in part due to the need to start treatment right away and not wait for testing, which can be negative early in the disease process,” Dr. Mark Loafman, a family physician with Cook County Health in Illinois, tells Yahoo Life.

A 2021 report that investigated insurance claims from 2010 to 2018 found that an estimated 476,000 patients were diagnosed with and treated for Lyme disease annually — significantly more than the CDC’s previous estimation that around 300,000 Americans get Lyme disease each year. That higher number may be a more accurate national representation, but the CDC says that it’s likely an overestimation because many patients treated for Lyme disease are not actually infected.

Bottom line: There is no way of knowing exactly how many people get Lyme disease each year. But the latest numbers are enough to make anyone worry about contracting it. Here, experts explain what Lyme disease is, which areas are hot spots and what you can do to stay safe.

What is Lyme disease and how is it contracted?

Lyme disease is an infection caused by spiral-shaped bacteria known as spirochete, the most common ones in the U.S. being Borrelia burgdorferi and Borrelia mayonii, Dr. Bobbi Pritt, a Mayo Clinic microbiologist, pathologist and Lyme disease expert, tells Yahoo Life. “Most people get it after being bitten by an infected black-legged tick, also called a deer tick,” Pritt adds. “These ticks become infected with the Lyme bacterium by biting an infected rodent, bird or other animal.”

Symptoms can show up within three to 30 days after a tick bite. Most people develop a target-shaped rash at the site of the tick bite and flu-like symptoms including fever, chills, fatigue, headache, lack of appetite, neck stiffness, swollen lymph nodes and muscle and joint pain, explains Pritt. However, some people don’t get a rash at all, “or fail to notice it if it’s on the back, scalp or other hard-to-see area,” she says.

How is Lyme disease treated?

If left untreated, the infection can spread and symptoms may worsen, resulting in arthritis, bone and joint pain, additional rashes, inflammation of the brain and spinal cord and facial palsy (one-sided facial droop), explains Pritt. “Involvement of the nerves can cause shooting pains or numbness in the hands and feet,” she says. Although not common, “involvement of the heart can lead to inflammation and rarely death.”

Treatment for Lyme disease varies depending on the case and symptoms, but almost always includes a course of oral or intravenous antibiotics, per the CDC. Even with treatment, though, 5% to 10% of infected individuals have persistent symptoms including fatigue, body aches and brain fog, Pritt says. “It can take months for these symptoms to go away,” she says. “Therefore, it is important to take steps to prevent Lyme disease whenever possible.”

What are the hot spots for Lyme disease?

Hot spots for Lyme disease are the Northeast, Upper Midwest and West Coast, as evidenced by the CDC’s Lyme disease map. Not surprisingly, vast areas of brush and trees cover these areas, where hiking and outdoor recreation are popular. “In the past, Lyme disease appeared to be limited to specific regions of the U.S.,” says Loafman. But anywhere with dense forestation presents risk.

Climate change could also be making things worse, adds Loafman, as deer ticks thrive in warm environments. Freezing temperatures typically control their population, according to NASA, but as winter temperatures rise in the northern U.S. and Canada, so does Lyme disease risk.

5 ways to protect yourself from Lyme disease

There are steps you can take to lower your risk of tick bites and Lyme disease, according to Loafman and Pritt.

  • Avoid hot spots. Using the CDC’s map as a guide, it’s wise to avoid Lyme disease hot spots, especially in warmer months. If that’s not possible, and you spend extensive time outside in those regions, Pritt recommends avoiding dense vegetation like tall grasses and leaf litter, environments in which ticks thrive.

  • Wear protective clothing and tick repellent. During outdoor activities, it’s crucial to wear clothing that covers your skin — even when it’s hot. “Tucking your pants into your socks can be an easy and effective way to keep ticks from biting your legs,” Pritt says. She also recommends using tick repellents such as Deet, Picaridin and oil of lemon or eucalyptus. For an added layer of protection, you can treat clothes and gear with the insecticide permethrin.

  • Complete thorough tick checks often. Especially after being outdoors, it’s important to scan the entire body for tick bites. Loafman notes that deer ticks are tiny, “so the skin inspection must be thorough and close,” he says. The insects like to burrow snugly against the skin, he adds, which makes the groin, armpits, inner elbows, waist band and sockline common areas for them to hide.

  • If you find a tick, remove it immediately. “Ticks take their time setting up shop to feed on your blood, so it generally takes 36 to 48 hours to transmit infection,” says Loafman. That means the sooner you remove a tick, the less likely you are to get sick. Still, Loafman advises doing so carefully and with caution — Pritt suggests using tweezers — because crushing or injuring the tick can cause injection of its saliva and make things worse.

  • Save the tick and see your doctor as soon as possible. After tick removal is complete, Loafman recommends putting it in a sealable plastic bag and taking it to your primary care provider, whom you should see as soon as possible. “Depending on the circumstances, they may want to see the tick to help determine the risk,” he says. Most important, if you suspect you were bitten — whether or not you found a tick — it’s important to see a doctor. “Treatment can help even if days or weeks have passed,” Loafman says.

Newborn Town Announces 2023 Annual Results with a YoY Increase of Nearly 300% in Profit Attributable to Owners and Rise in Second-mover Apps

0

HONG KONG, March 22, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — Newborn Town (“Newborn Town”; 9911. HK), one of the frontrunners of the global social networking and entertainment industry, announced its 2023 annual results on March 21st.

The company’s revenue increased solidly in 2023, reaching RMB3,308 million with an 18% YoY increase. The revenue of the social networking business reached RMB2,972 million, while the revenue of the innovative business was RMB336 million.

According to the announcement, Newborn Town’s high-quality growth strategy has continued in 2023. The company’s net profit increased by 165% YoY to RMB761 million. The profit attributable to the owners reached RMB513 million, a 294% YoY growth. The adjusted EBITDA was RMB675 million, representing a rise of 80% compared to the corresponding period in 2022. The gross margin reached 52%, up 14 percentage points.

Since its debut in the global markets in 2013, Newborn Town has grown into a leading tech company in the social entertainment industry. This company has focused on its core business, the ‘pan-audience social networking business’ while eyeing the ‘diverse-audience social networking’ and ‘quality games’ businesses for years.

MICO, YoHo, SUGO and TopTop are four flagship apps under Newborn Town’s ‘pan-audience social networking business’ and have made rapid strides as they’ve evolved into top-notch platforms that aim to meet users’ diversified social demands among emerging markets such as the MENA region and South East Asia.

The past year has witnessed a series of upgrades in this business segment’s social apps. Among the ‘first-mover’ apps, MICO has tailored more services to meet the social needs of MENA users. YoHo, an audio-based social platform, has added more localized features and refined its operations, leading to a continued increase in profit. In 2023, these two apps remained within the top 30 of the list of Chinese non-game publishers in terms of overseas revenue released by data.ai.

TopTop, the game-oriented social platform in Newborn Town’s ‘second-mover’ apps portfolio, has progressed in enhancing its user growth system and fostering a lively atmosphere within the community. These efforts have led to an over 2x YoY increase in revenue and an over 6x YoY rise in profit.

As another ‘second-mover’ app, the companion-based social app SUGO has gained over 3x YoY revenue growth and over 6x YoY rise in profit as it optimized the in-app matchmaking strategy. This app has also been a frequenter in the above-mentioned list from data.ai since 2023 and has seen a continued uplift in ranking.

Notably, Newborn Town is the social entertainment company with the most number of apps on data.ai’s list, which is the result of its endeavors to implement the ‘replication’ strategy for social apps in this business segment and a reward for Newborn Town’s unremitting exploration of the MENA region.

Since 2017, Newborn Town has taken steps to explore the MENA region, which is considered as a promising market for the social networking and entertainment industry.

By diving deep into Muslim users’ social needs and carving out multiple social scenes with localized quality content, Newborn Town has achieved a 30% YoY increase in revenue from its core apps in the MENA region; from 2020 to 2023, the growth CAGR was ~32%.

Plus, Newborn Town has also focused on the social needs of the LGBTQ+ community. In 2023, Newborn Town officially consolidated the ‘diverse-audience social networking business’ to start a new chapter exploring this realm.

The ‘diverse-audience social networking business’ mainly targets global markets. Based on a comprehensive observation of social trends among LGBTQ+ people, Newborn Town launched the social app HeeSay, which aims to encourage LGBTQ+ people to share, express, and connect.

This platform leverages the user base and brand influence that the international version of Blued has accumulated in different markets. It completed the ‘dating app to community app’ upgrade and officially debuted in over 70 countries and regions on January 1st, 2024.

As the annual result revealed, the ‘diverse-audience social networking business’ contributed to revenue of RMB353 million and profit of RMB102 million. HeeSay was expected to accelerate its global exploration due to Newborn Town’s deep localized operations capabilities.

Newborn Town’s innovative business also achieved remarkable breakthroughs during 2023 as its flagship game, Alice’s Dream: Merge Island, witnessed a continued rise in monthly revenue.

In the fourth quarter of 2023, Alice’s Dream reached an average monthly revenue of over 8 million US dollars and has frequently been at the forefront of Sensor Tower’s lists regarding overseas revenue and downloads.

Based on that success, Newborn Town rolled out new apps like Taylor’s Secret, Merge Cove and Sudoku. And Sudoku ranked third on the US mid-core casual games list for June 2023, as released by data.ai.

The global casual games market is estimated to reach approximately 25 billion US dollars in 2027. Based on the forecast, Newborn Town will further upgrade flagship apps’ monetization capabilities and profitability. Furthermore, the company will create more quality games with high lifetime value while steadily incubating new products.

“The company will stick to its high-quality growth strategy and continue its commitment to the ‘pan-audience social networking business’ in the MENA region. Besides, we won’t stop tapping into the LGBTQ+ social networking and quality games industries to discover more possibilities and engage more global users, thus gaining diversified and sustainable growth,” Li Ping, CEO of Newborn Town said.

Why is this a good deal?

Full-sized projectors can cost a pretty penny. A quick look on Amazon shows that competitors cost as much (if not significantly more) than the Yowhick. This is a tough little projector designed for use outside and can greatly enhance your spring nights — and it’s well under $100.

Why do I need this?

The indoor/outdoor Yowhick Projector with 5G Wi-Fi Bluetooth easily connects with your smartphone, so you can stream Netflix, Hulu and any other viewing service you subscribe to: The only thing you need is a wall to project on. Kick back and enjoy up to 300 square inches of projection with this handy device. This projector easily syncs up to your phone, computer or gaming device, basically anything that’s got a screen. What reviewers say

Shoppers rave about the quality of this little projector. “First things first: This little projector is bright, I did not even have to darken the room (regular blinds are fine even on a sunny day),” said one shopper.

“It is every bit as good as my year-and-a-half-old full-size HD projector I paid over $1K for,” said a fellow fan. “The image may even be better. To top it off, this has all the new features that my $1,500 one didn’t have, including WiFi and Bluetooth speaker connectivity.”

Another happy customer shared this glowing testimonial: “I just bought this projector on Amazon and I am really impressed with it. The unit itself is compact, but the lens is big and the picture is bright. The light source is LED so it turns on in seconds and should last a long time. There are multiple types of inputs. First I tried using it with a HDMI cable from my laptop. I just plugged it in and started projecting. When I put in a USB drive, I was able to go through the folders and look at pictures and watch movies.”

“Packs a punch in a small form factor,” raved a reviewer. “I was surprised by the power and brightness of this machine. We have it set up in my son’s room next to his bed. The ability to mirror his iPhone games on to the wall has been a real asset. Movies look crisp and the audio out allowed us to hook up speakers. Great brightness and colors, ability to keystone the image to get it just right.”

“Small but mighty,” one user said. “I couldn’t ask for a better unit for the price. The picture quality is well above my expectations and colors are vivid … The only thing I would say that could be considered a downside is that the power cord is a little short, but it’s not that it is that big of a deal as I always have a long-corded power bar in my bag.

South Atlantic island known for Napoleon’s exile hopes to breathe new life into tourism industry

St. Helena, a small, craggy island in the South Atlantic Ocean, hasn’t seen many tourists in the past for good reason: It’s one of the most remote inhabited places in the world.

Until 2017, it took five nights by boat to reach the British overseas territory, which is nearly halfway between southern Africa and Brazil. Today, with weekly commercial flights and the recent arrival of high-speed internet, the government is hoping to breathe new life into a fledgling tourism industry that welcomed about 2,100 leisure travelers in 2023.

The island has just a little more than 4,000 residents, or Saints as they call themselves, and is likely to attract a certain kind of visitor.

WORLD’S MOST REMOTE ISLAND NOW WELCOMING TOURISTS

“It’s people with a real desire to travel and learn rather than, ‘let’s go somewhere to have a bit of sunshine and some nice food,’” says Emma Phillips, whose husband, Nigel, is St. Helena’s governor.

After all, weather can be unpredictable and supplies occasionally run low when you’re 1,200 miles from the nearest continent.

“You’ve got to be prepared to embrace all of that,” Phillips says, while extolling the island’s welcoming locals, rich history and natural wonders. “Come with an open mind.”

HISTORY: NAPOLEON, GEORGIAN ARCHITECTURE

Perhaps best known as the site of Napoleon Bonaparte’s exile from 1815 until his death in 1821, St. Helena features multiple heritage sites honoring the deposed French emperor. Visitors can tour his homes and his original burial grounds. His remains were returned to France in 1840.

The capital city, Jamestown, is an eclectic mix of new and old. British Georgian-era colonial buildings house small retail and grocery stores. There are a couple DVD rental shops — remnants of the island’s pre-high-speed internet days.

For a workout with a view, climb the 699 steps of Jacob’s Ladder on the edge of town. The 600-foot-high outdoor staircase was originally a donkey-powered cart track used to transport goods between the city and fortifications on the cliffs above.

Plantation House, 2 miles south of the capital, is a grand Georgian mansion built in 1792 by the British East India Company, which administered St. Helena until 1834. Now the official governor’s residence, the house features a collection of royal portraits and original furnishings, including antique china and a chandelier from Bonaparte’s final home.

NATURE: WHALE SHARKS, A LEGENDARY TORTOISE

Plantation House’s well-manicured yard is home to one of the island’s most famous residents, a venerable tortoise named Jonathan. At the approximate age of 192, Jonathan holds the Guinness World Record for the oldest living land animal. He has met several royals, including Queen Elizabeth II, who visited St. Helena in 1947, and Prince Edward, who made the trip in January.

“Jonathan is an enigmatic tortoise,” says Teeny Lucy, one of his caretakers for over a decade. “If you come to St. Helena, people usually know two things: Jonathan the tortoise and Napoleon Bonaparte.” She’s not sure who is the bigger celebrity.

Jonathan has lost his sight and sense of smell, but remains a major draw for tourists like Gilly Hill, who traveled from the U.K. to snap selfies with him.

“I just think he’s the most amazing creature,” she said.

Other bucket-list activities include swimming with Chilean devil rays or whale sharks, which are often spotted December through March. There’s also humpback whale watching from June to December. Come in January to catch peak nesting season for the wirebird, also known as the St. Helena plover, which can only be found on St. Helena.

FOR OUTDOORS LOVERS: BIODIVERSITY, SCENERY

Roughly one-third of all endemic biodiversity in U.K. territories can be found within the 47-square-mile island. More than 500 species are not seen anywhere else on earth, including 45 flowering plants and ferns.

Microclimates that range from cool tropical forests to sunny rolling grasslands and windswept volcanic cliffs can all be experienced within an hour’s drive.

With two dozen scenic trails, St. Helena can satisfy even the most avid hiker’s wanderlust. Serious trekkers might opt for the highest point, Diana’s Peak. The 2.3-mile hike takes you 2,690 feet above sea level and into Britain’s last remaining natural cloud forest.

Casual hikers can stroll along Blue Point Trail for spectacular views of Sandy Bay, Sperry Island and Castle Rock. For a moderate challenge, try the shaded hike to St. Helena’s famed Heart Shaped Waterfall, which only flows in winter and early spring. Be sure to catch the best views of the falls from the main road out of Jamestown.

FOR FOODIES: RARE COFFEE, COLORFUL CAKES

Perched at 1,700 feet on one of the lushest and most remote parts of the island lies a historic estate with sweeping cloud-forest views and a really good cup of joe.

Wranghams is a small coffee farm with tours and home stays, run by Neil and Debbie Fantom.

Coffee connoisseurs seek out St. Helena’s beans, often touted as one of the rarest and most expensive varieties in the world due to their export costs and single-origin status. It sells online for $150 per half pound. Extreme isolation has ensured that the coffee plants, which were imported from Yemen in the 18th century, have never been cross-fertilized.

“Is it the best in the world? I couldn’t tell you. Is it coffee that we enjoy producing and drinking? One hundred percent,” Neil says. “We’ve got the perfect climate for it, and we do it ourselves.”

“With love,” adds Debbie.

Other local culinary delights include plo, a cross between curry and Spanish paella, fresh fishcakes, and sponge cakes with bright pink icing known as coconut fingers.

WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

Money: St. Helena has no ATMs, credit cards are not widely accepted, and the local bank has limited hours. Be sure to bring British pounds (GBP) to cover your stay and the 20 pounds entry fee (about $25). Another option is St. Helena Bank’s prepaid Tourist Card app, which can be loaded with debit cards online and is accepted throughout the island.

Connectivity: Download essentials like the Tourist Card app and offline Google maps before you arrive, as Wi-Fi and mobile data is limited and expensive.

Getting There: Airlink flies once weekly from Johannesburg. A mid-week flight is often added during the busier summer season, December to March. You’ll need proof of medical insurance covering at least 175,000 pounds (about $223,000) to board the plane.

Where to Stay: Accommodations range from simple home stays to boutique hotels. The higher-end Mantis St. Helena has 30 rooms and complimentary, reliable internet.

Getting Around: St. Helena’s narrow roads and blind curves are not for the faint of heart. If you’re comfortable driving stick shift on the left side of the road, rental cars are available. Otherwise, taxis are your best option for island adventuring.

Oral health is closely related to our well-being

Experts call for ” A HAPPY MOUTH IS…A HAPPY BODY”

HONG KONG, March 20, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — According to the latest Global Oral Health Status Report published by the World Health Organization in November 2022, the prevalence of oral diseases is ranked first among more than 300 common diseases, and currently about 3.5 billion people worldwide suffer from oral diseases1.  The report also clearly points out that oral diseases bring about physical, mental and social impacts to individuals on more than 10 levels, which affect, around the clock, the daily life of individuals2.

See the release graphic here

Dr. Chu Chun Hung, Immediate Past President of the Society of Preventive Dentistry of Hong Kong and the Asian Academy of Preventive Dentistry, explains that over the years, academic research has confirmed that “Oral health impacts the quality of life (Oral Health Related Quality of Life, OHRQoL)”3.  Oral diseases impact not only the mouth, but also cause pain and discomfort, affect oral function, mood, job and school, and treatment expectations.  These five major oral health conditions can all affect a person’s physical and mental health and well-being.

A healthy mouth is the prerequisite to ensuring physical and mental health, and to enhance the sense of well-being in life. The theme of this year’s World Oral Health Day is “A HAPPY MOUTH IS…A HAPPY BODY”. The Society of Preventive Dentistry of Hong Kong urges the people of Hong Kong to maintain good oral hygiene habits. In addition to regular dental checkups, people need to brush their teeth every morning and evening with toothpaste containing fluoride, floss or use an interdental brush to clean the areas between the teeth, and avoid or reduce the consumption of sweets. Adults and children aged 4 years or older can chew sugar-free gum. Chewing sugar-free gum stimulates saliva production and neutralizes acidity in the mouth, effectively preventing tooth decay4. The effectiveness of sugar-free gum in preventing tooth decay has been recognized by the World Dental Federation (FDI).
